Police Obstruction Control Have you ever felt unsafe at your school?

By Maylan Diaz School security is a big issue in today’s world. Did you know that kids feel unsafe and with fear of getting hurt at their own schools?

Most schools don’t have the amount of security they need. Students seem to be very worried about this situation.

“I have felt unsafe in my schools environment many times”, sophomore Gerlad Dencklau said.

Students claim that over time school issues such as drugs, bad behavior, violence have gotten worse.

“I’ve seen police dogs and policemen all around school,” freshman Mailyn Martinez said. Students has felt unsafe and worried about what could be happening on campus.

There are solutions to some of the

problems that might be happening at your school. Schools could provide more rules and restrictions to prevent things from happening. Such as having monitors in front of schools. This would be to make sure no one is carrying any weapons or harmful arms.

“I have gotten my backpack checked at school for no reason and i felt like it was a big invasion of my privacy,” fresman Cearser Garsia said.

Sometimes schools do random backpacks checks around campus and some students think it is a good idea. “I believe it is a great idea to check students backpacks once in a while,” Martinez said.

Others think it is invasion of privacy and that it is disrespectful,”I felt very disrespected and uncomfortable,” Garsias said.

Students could feel uncomfortable in this type of situation but it is something

that has to be done. This will decrease the amount of tragedies that happen day to day on schools campus.

Seeing a police dog while walking to class could be a scary thing. Sometimes we might not even release it but something could be happening around you and you might not even know it.

That’s why schools tend to immediately bring dogs on to the campus of a small situation had occurred.In order for the situation to not become a bigger problem.

“Once I saw a police dog and a police officer walking around school and instead of feeling fear I felt that I was safe,” Dencklau said.

For some this upped police presence is fearful, but for others it is a sign of safety.

School safety is something that will continue to progress if situations continue as they have in the past year.

Cultural competency take’s off

Teachers train to better understand of their students By: Jonas Castaneda Camiro Bonanza High School students are diverse, and the faculty and staff want to improve communications.

Cultural competency is a new program introduced to Bonanza High School teachers in order to create a better environment at the school and a better understandment between students and staff.

According to instructional strategist Mrs. Doreen Farmer, “Some people are very open to it and some people don’t understand it. Cultural Competency is not racism.”

Catching wind of the progression, students are here for it. “It would affect the environment in a positive manner because teachers would be able to comprehend students background, culture and what they’ve been through,” sophomore Ricardo Aldana said.

teachers know how to treat students based on their background, since not all students are the same. The idea is that this program will promote compassion, empathy and a sense of belowing.

Thus, introducing the idea of personal thoughts being exchanged and a more comfortable classroom environment.

In order to find these inconveniences that students and teachers may have, an annual technique of surveys has been used.

These surveys provide information that the administration can use to better the relationship between teachers and students.

“Teachers took surveys and know students well, while students don’t know teachers very well,” Mrs. Analiese Camacho said.

The statistics show how Cultural Competency is a much needed program especially for the students.

If a student learns more about the per-

son whose teaching them, productivity in the classroom will increase.

Many students from all over the world have found themselves becoming a student at Bonanza.

By being prepared with different cultures and having an open mind about theses cultures the process of easing a student into a new classroom environment becomes easier.

For example, if a foreign exchange student comes to Bonanza and doesn’t speak English well, then no assumptions have to be made. Since teachers know the student’s background, they can figure out who speaks the language of the foreign exchange student and move on from there.

Cultural Competency isn’t just a random program that has been implemented and later taken away, but a program that will grow and improve Bonanza High School.

Seven periods could take over CCSD By: Jonas Castaneda Camiro How does having more opportunities, more electives and a better chance at acquiring all your credits sound? Is it too good to be true?

Bonanza High School has changed its schedule from the traditional six period schedule to a seven period schedule.

This change has brought many benefits to the school.

In fact, as a result of this change graduation went up tremendously, “graduation has increased from 74 percent to 92 percent results have gone up so much.” principal Mr. Joe Petrie said.

The opportunity given to students is the high availability of classes that there is to choose from.

This gives the student the chance of picking a class that he or she enjoys.

With students required to earn 22 credits, maximum 24, the opportunity’s students get is to have more electives which goes a long way towards achieving graduation.

“Having more electives helps the students because it will give them choices to subjects they might be interested in as well as the chance to make up credits if need be,” sophomore Israel Barrios said.

Bonanza began a seven period system two years ago.

“I’ve been here at Bonanza when it had six periods,” junior Fabian Espino said.

“So going into a school year with seven periods has been an unusual change. The changing of 51minutes to 47 minutes has

been one that I have gotten accustomed to and it’s worth the benefits given from having seven periods.”

Something to consider with this whole schedule change is classes have become shorter in time, giving students less time to learn, thus making time in class more valuable.

Bonanza isn’t the only school with seven periods, however most CCSD schools have a six period schedule still in place; leaving CCSD schools the option to switch over from six to seven periods, which is something that is being debated

by CCSD officials.

With the astonishing results that seven periods bring to Bonanza, who knows, a new trend may be on the horizon for district high schools.

2019 The beginning of a new era Seniors say goodbye to high school, hello to the real world

By Kimberly Hernandez-Martinez Growth and change happens all the time, everywhere around one’s self. One can see another person grow and change from the sidelines, or experience the changes themselves.

In high school, the biggest changes are from one’s freshman year to one’s own senior year, even to the life you live after graduation.

“I have definitely matured since freshman year and my mindset toward certain things have changed,” senior Briceli Conception said.

As a person’s four years of high school progress, so does one’s mindset, maturity, and goals. Senior year is one of the easiest years if one passes one’s freshman to junior year classes.

Some seniors have only five classes, which sadly is a privilege that will be leaving for the 2019-2020 school year, and the years beyond that. Having a changed outlook on school can greatly affect the way that one works in classes or react to social events. Having a differentiated mindset in the beginning of ones high school career to the end is an obvious sign of growth, a sign of change.

“I’m excited to graduate but I’m also scared of going out into the real world and having to do many things on my own,”

-Gaby Vazquez, senior Conception said. When graduating from high school, many students will begin to live a life without the help of their parents.

Many will go off to school to an out-ofstate college while some will stay in state.

But once becoming an adult, i.e. graduating from high school or moving out of home, there’s a whole lot more responsibility that is brought on.

For many students, graduating high school is just one mile stone out of dozens of milestones they have yet to reach, while for others, graduating is nothing but a simple pebble in the way to their future and their goals.

“I wish someone would have told me to focus less on the little things and more on the big things like school,” senior Gaby Vazquez said.

Stressing oneself out in the beginning of your high school career is a very common occurrence within all students. Worrying about small things, such as miniscule problems outside of school or shifting one’s focus from school to something else and stressing yourself out with that happens to many.

Many students feel as though stressing about other things rather than school is much easier, which is not it in most cases.

Nowadays, many seniors have the mindset of the ”next step.” What their life after high school will be, their goals and what they wish to achieve in life.

“I want to tell the incoming freshman to not worry too much about these next few years,” Vazquez said. “Just focus on school and your passions, the rest will fall into place.”

Many freshmen begin stressing out about the upcoming years, which is common with having the anxiety of growing up and becoming an adult. For many seniors, the change from freshman year to senior years is drastic.

Many have matured and realized that school is something that should be enjoyed while some seniors view school as a nuisance. For many students like Vazquez, school is just one step of the way to getting to the big picture.

“I wish someone would have told me I would get senioritis this bad,” senior

Ashley Droemer said. “I thought this year would blow by like a breeze but once the senioritis hit, I was done.”

Many seniors begin feeling what we call senioritis, which is somewhat a lack of motivation of going to class and getting your work done.

Basically just waiting for graduation to blow on by, getting a diploma, and brushing one’s hands off of high school.

For many students, high school helps develop themselves and evolve and become who they truly mean to be, while others tend to use high school as a means to an end.

The end of an era after 12 long years of studying. High school is the last step to truly becoming the adult that one has always wanted to become.

Some students yearn to leave the desert, while others plan on joining the workforce that helps keep Nevada tourism alive. “I plan to become a stage manager at the casinos,” Droemer said. “I have a passion for stage work, I know it’s what I want to do.”

“Live your high school career, do what makes you happy, not what makes others happy.

Many students who are even now so close to graduating, still have not yet figured out what they want to do, which can be tough and stressful. Enrolling to colleges require selecting majors and for many students, selecting majors is such

a difficult task because of the confusion of what they want to do and what their goals are.

For students like Droemer, who have a goal set for their future, there is one less thing to worry about.

Once figuring out what someone wants to do for their career, high school can be such a breeze afterward.

In many colleges, there are students who continue to change their majors from time to time simply because they haven’t found what calls to them.

As the seniors begin to say goodbye to their past, the new era begins for them to live.

Many of the seniors have no idea what to do after high school and many of them do. But, one thing most of them know is that this chapter of their lives has finally come to a close.

“I think high school is just one of those things you live through, survive and live to tell tales abou tin the future,” Droemer said.

There is beauty in diversity By: Alma Sierra Lozano We value your values.

It’s not easy to find yourself in a school full of diverse students. Each student has their own culture, each culture distinct from the others. This is why people always try to search for those who they can relate to. But what if the school has clubs in which people could find what they were looking for?

We have the Multicultural club in which they acknowledge, celebrate and highlight the cultures, traditions and customs that are within the school’s student body. “Our uniqueness is that we look for each other’s cultural values,” adviser Mr.Devezin said. You feel appreciated in this club, therefore it will always make sure you feel at home.

The multicultural club can give you more awareness of how other people live and how other people celebrate certain holidays and traditions.

“This club really taught me to appreciate my friends more since they are all from different culture,” senior Malik Moses said. It helps you understand and accept that there is more to people than you can visually see. They always try to motivate students to be happy for who they are and have pride for the origin of their ethnicity.

Another club is the Black Student Union club. The club learns about the

- Mr.Devezin, adviser African-American history. It helps you find who you are and where you come from. It also teaches you why the history is important. Although it is for the African-American students, they allow other students from different ethnicities to come and enjoy the club as well. They educate and provide support in making sure you graduate and get scholarships.

The students, individually, makes the club unique.

“It allows us all to understand and have compassion for one another,” adviser Ms.Richardson said. The reaction towards the club has been very positive. The members make sure to have the newcomers feel at home, which creates a peaceful environment. That also helps them make sure the new ones come back as well.

A club that took birth this year was the Asian Pacific Islanders’ club. This club is about the students being able to come together to share and connect through their Asian or pacific island culture. This club is unique by it’s diversity.

“The API club benefits the students by providing a place to make new friends who share a connection,” senior and presi-

dent of the club Mikayla Wilkie said. The students have been able to find friends in an unexpected place, which is amazing and beautiful to see.

This club helps embrace who you are because you’re able to relate with people.

You also get to share similarities and differences with one another.

“When entering the club you can expect a welcoming environment and friendly people,” Wilkie said.

“I have not only gained friends but a family that I can go to after school every Tuesday, ” senior Anna Lao said. This student tells how she has found comfort with people who are totally different from her.

All these clubs sponsor themselves by posters and the travel of good word. They always encourage students to join their club and assure that they will love the club. All they ask for is to come as you are and be open-minded. These clubs have so much to prove and will happily show their pride. But they will not always be the ones trying to put effort into the club. The students themselves have to prove that the club is where they want to be. Now, which one will you choose?

Out with the old, in with the new

By; Angelica Velazquez High school, the best and worst four years of our lives. As a teenager, we think that these years will make or break our future, but will they?

Going into freshman year just a kid was one of the scariest moments of our teenage lives. We were surrounded by hundreds of teenagers.

As the movies show, bullying and stealing kids lunch money was a true story and that made the anxiety of coming into a school two or three times bigger than your middle school. Triple the kids, triple the drama, and triple the depression.

In high school you begin experiencing and feeling all these new emotions such as sadness, anger, anxiety, etc. and most of the times we wouldn’t know how to handle it.

We were just young kids entering high school and each and every one of us has

grown so much since then. It’s senior year for a lot of us and looking back at those moments filled with anxiety and pressure have slowly dissolved over the years.

Thinking we wouldn’t be able to get through it freshman year was so easy to think, but look at us now. Seniors are one month away from graduation and eagerly waiting to leave.

As a freshman, we thought that school was just a waste of time and figured that we didn’t need school in our lives but as we grew older and started maturing we realized that college after high school would really help us out as adults.

Learning has become so difficult but we’ve started to push ourselves because getting good grades has gotten very important at this point.

As a teenager you learn so much, you go through many experiences that can change your way of thinking for the rest of your life. It is also scary at the same time, we don’t know what we

should expect after high school but we would know that maybe, just maybe we can get through it because we have grown so much as a person already. We have become a lot stronger than we were as f ”resh meat”.

Relationships, friendships and breakups are a big part of being a teen because we simply just want to experience as much as we can.

We learn new things and the mistakes you’ve been through these four years help you realize that adult life is coming and sooner than you think.

Each generation is different than the other. But in the end, they’re all students at the same high school. We have to remember that we’re all in this together.

Growing up was the inevitable but realizing that the end of our teenage years is sudden. We have changed so much since the beginning of high school and we are excited to see what the future has in store for us.

From fresh meat to old -timers By: Lilly Gonzalez I went from the student that never shows up to class, to graduating with a 3.5 GPA. From not knowing what I was going to do with my life, to actually doing something that I never imagined.

Freshman year, the year when you feel it doesn’t matter, it does matter. Thinking I was cool for skipping class to hangout with my friends. They weren’t smart friends, they encouraged me to ditch more than actually go to class. I would only to go to class for Dance, thinking I could graduate if I only did dance class. I pretend I was dumb so I could fit in with a group of friends and actually feel apart of something. I got straight C’s and D’s; I didn’t want to try in any of my classes. I had teachers talk to me, trying to make me actually open my eyes. They were trying to tell me the right thing but it’s like I was just listening and not actually taking in what they were telling me. Maybe if I had actually thought about myself first, instead of ditching in my head I could have actually had honors classes.

Sophomore year, the year that I thought the staff and teachers didn’t care about me. They’re more focused on the upcoming freshman and seniors. I thought school was just a big waste of time, since the teachers and staff didn’t really pay attention to me. I only liked coming to school to workout with my physical training team.

vates me to be better.

Junior year, I regretted everything I did freshman and sophomore year. I noticed how much both of those years actually mattered.

Now I had to get better grades to get the credits I was missing.

I felt like a dumb teenager thinking that ditching was more important than school. I regretted everything I did, all the absences I had, and the 1.5 GPA I had. I wanted to have a future and be better than my parents. I didn’t want to live with my parents, so for me it was like I didn’t want that life. I wanted an actual career that would get me somewhere in life. Junior year was the year I cared more about my grades, GPA and attendance than anything else.

Senior year, I couldn’t believe I was a senior! Where did the time go by? I remember steeping foot in this school

thinking I was never going to graduate.

Now I’m in Pre-calc honors thinking, who would have known I’m actually really smart. If you just try and do what you got to do, you can do anything. If you just push yourself, then you could do whatever you put your mind to.

I’m proud to say I have a 3.5 GPA and got to prove everyone wrong that said I

couldn’t do it.

Don’t ever give up on yourself because you can do anything you put yourself to. Don’t act dumb and be part of a group of friends that doesn’t care about your education.

Go to your classes, it’s not hard, I promise you. Learning is one of the most beautiful things you could do. In freshman year, I would never have thought I would be graduating. So overall, from freshman year to senior I would say I have had a huge change.

Free yourself from the chains

By: Alma Sierra Lozano Being who you are is a challenge.

Have you ever felt yourself grow within a small amount of time? Whether it’s a slow or fast process. We have all grown and blossomed to who we are now.

I know I have. Becoming who I am now has been really difficult. I had to overcome so many obstacles. I am learning to not always try to find the answers but to live day by day. It is not always easy but it sure helps to take a look back on the person one use to be and see all the difficulties that have passed.

My sophomore year is coming to an end and I’ve learned so much about myself. The beginning of this year I found myself very isolated to people. It has been hard to trust and open up to those who, genuinely, want to find a friendship with me. Although, I admit that it has been a rough ride for me but with those came with the best life lessons anyone could have taught me.

One obstacle I have over-came is how straightforward I am. I have always had a way with words that hurt people. I didn’t care because I was being me. But then someone got sick of how I would talk

to people and they told me all my truths about how I am. I didn’t like it one bit.

Especially on how blunt she was. She gave me the taste of my own medicine and told me to be humble and accept the advice she was giving me. Now I know that I havr to be careful on how they talk to people.

Everyone reacts differently and you can never know what will happen.

Another obstacle I had to deal with was being more attentive in school. I didn’t care about school. I thought that just by having friends I was already cool enough.

Also, when I disrespected the teachers and everyone laughed, I found myself doing it more often just so people can like me. I got in trouble one time and had to have a parent-teacher conference. It was humiliating because I didn’t want my parents to see just how bad I was doing. They were oblivious of my attitude in school. After that, I realized how trying to fit in a crowd of disrespectful people will never take you to good places.

The last difficulty I came across was when I always tried to defend my friends.

I admit, defending the people you love makes the bond stronger. But, you should never defend someone if your safety is

on the line. I tried to defend friends who were being disrespected and I didn’t just want to stand and watch. So I stood up for them. After the whole problem was solved not once did they show gratitude. Within a few weeks they just stopped talking to me. Now, the fact that I was willing to put them first over me sounds absurd. You can love and protect whom you love. Just not to the point where you can possibly get hurt.

Becoming who I am now has been hard. These situations have all been about who I am as a person. Changing who you are is not easy but if you have a desire to become a better person, you will do anything to achieve it. And having someone cheer you on in the progress, can go a long way. You should always try to have people around them that will help them grow especially when you can’t deal with it alone. I hope you are able to find who you truly are and not be bombarded by all the madness that’s in school. The chains from society can really tie you down and it will be harder to free yourself. I never want to please those who will always find a way to tie me down. I will make sure of that.

Child to young adult in an instant Each time I moved I would leave friends behind. It affected me because it allowed me to not have that many friends because I was afraid to move again and lose great friends.

By:Gracia Vargas Transitioning from grade to grade is hard enough with obstacles that come along the way and added responsibility you get each time you go to a different grade.

As you grow up, you get more and more work piled in to your life. It’s hard growing up because more work stresses you out. Stress can be a harmful or beneficial thing in your life because it can help you overcome fears but it can also be a bad thing.

My life changed as I became a young adult. Through my elementary years I had moved from school to school because my mother moved me around a lot. New schools gave me new opportunities to start over with making friends and academically.

It was also bad because I was very shy. Each time I moved I would leave friends behind. It affected me because it allowed me to not have that many friends because I was afraid to move again and lose great friends.

Moving schools was difficult because there were different curriculums so it was

hard for me to learn, seeing as mathematics isn’t my strong suit.

I eventually got used to all those things like learning new academics and making new friends.

At first though, I had very little friends and I got bullied, but I eventually fixed that problem, even though that period of time I was super sad.

I moved to the North side where I started going to Leavitt Middle school.

I was an nice and innocent kid and had very little friends. I always did well in school, with achieving straight A’s which my parents were very proud of.

I had friends who always included me and helped me with whatever I needed. I still remember all their names and have their numbers now.

I lived a great life with divorced parents that I would switch off going to every week. I had three siblings at the time that I would always take care of.

I was only at that school for two years and then I moved on to the eighth grade as I moved. I moved to the Summerlin side of Vegas and ended up going to Johnson Junior High. I was nervous to be starting a new school in my last year of middle school but eventually I got com-

fortable. I was still innocent at the time.

The friends I had made ended up spreading rumors about me. They were bad; they smoked, drank, and who knows what else. I didn’t want to surround myself with that type of behavior so I stopped being their friend. My mom kicked me out of my home so I moved in with my dad.

I became sad, depressed, even with suicidal thoughts. I wanted help for those things so I reached out to my councelor and told her everything. She called my dad, and I got a therapist to help control my feelings, which worked. I’ve been better since that time in my life.

I started school at Veterans Tribute Career and Technical Academy to become a lawyer, that school has five programs for people to go in to help people. At first I wanted to be a lawyer but now I realize that want to be a nurse.

The school was very difficult, so I decided to leave and come to Bonanza High School this year. Bonanza has been great but it’s not a good fit for me in academics and friendships, so I am going to Nevada State High School for my junior year. I want to graduate early so it’s a better fit for my academics.

Game rates writer By: Melissa Een Created by University Games 15 years ago, Man Bites Dog is an unusual game.

The name comes from the journalistic aphorism “man bites dog”, which represents the fact that something infrequent or unique will attract more attention than something that happens often.

The saying originated in the early 1800s, although it is unclear who coined the phrase originally.

The game itself is similar in many ways to Scrabble. Each player is given five cards, each card containing a word and a point value.

The player can discard and replace up to two cards and then must use the

remaining cards to create a headline.

Once all of the players have prepared their headline, they show their headline to the rest of the players. If the headline is grammatically correct, the point values of each card used are added together.

If a player has an Exclusive card, the point value doubles. This continues until a player reaches 500 points.

Man Bites Dog is a game that is quite obviously targeting a specific audience, that audience being journalists.

While that fact makes it very enjoyable to play in Journalism class, it also makes it less fun in other settings, seeing as most people don’t find it fun to come up with ridiculous headlines.

Writing headlines requires a certain

touch for the dramatic, and writing headlines that make sense using five random words requires a lot of creativity.

Sometimes it is impossible to create a headline that makes sense. There is only so much you can do when you have five nouns, which may seem unlikely but is not.

These issues are, however, unavoidable unless the company were to color code the cards by the part of speech they are, which would also limit the player’s options when faced with a word that could belong to multiple parts of speech.

Overall, the game is very fun if you have the right temperament for it.

If journalism isn’t your thing, you might find it difficult to appreciate.

Eating food is the best way to connect to diverse cultures By: Haylea Kenitzer Food is the best ways to understand a culture. It is a part of a regions national identity and heritage. Numerous people can make automatic connections within the first taste of the food. Many relish the flavor of food from other cultures and countries. Each meal has a unique taste that makes you ravenous. Each family takes a tradition or simple recipe from their home to make a gracious and enjoyable meal. There are many regions that have numerous feasts with the history.

Hispanic locations such as Mexico and Cuba are associated with spicy and hot meals, but there are actually some very sweet treats. A popular dish from Mexico is Flan. Flan actually originated within the Ancient Romans but soon spread to Latin and French areas when the Roman Emperor died. There are over 500 sweet pastries. One of them is from Mexico, the concha bread, though the concha bread was made in the Americas, who tried to mimic the famous pan dulces. Pan dulces

were invented when Mexico was first introduced to wheat. The sweet pastries, pan dulces, of Mexico set the idea of sweet breaded pastries.

The Asian community is known for their zangy, sour banquets. A very delicious cuisine from China is chow mein.

Chow mein originated from northern China and was stir fried noodles until they decided to change the cooking for a western taste where now, chow mein is stir fried veggies and boiled noodles. It was based from a Chinese authentic dish.

Lumpia is a spring roll with veggies and minced meat and can be found within the Filipinas and Indonesia. Through the Philippines, lumpia traveled with ninthcentury Chinese traders. It is a tradition within Filipino families to serve lumpia on special occasions.

Numerous islands have many mouth watering, flavorful food. One of which is Hawaiian who makes many plausible courses using many tropical fruits and meats. One fare from the is-

land is spam musubi. Spam musubi came from Barbara Funamura who was in the war. Spam was used majority of the times for meals which resulted in spam musubi within the troops. The large military presence started spam’s widespread local adoption. It is the perfect balance of sweet and salty, having spam with rice in the middle. Then wrapped with nori or seaweed.

According to scientists who conducted experiments comparing the style of cooking, when you put love into the meal, the food will taste much better.

Most meals are very traditional based on the history as a way of expressing gratitude. Many amazing foods come from around the world. All of the food you eat has a history. Acknowledging and appreciating the history of meals you have is good to know for yourself, teaching you the wonders of everything you put into your body.

There is no better way to bring people and history together than by food.

As an American, you are used to listening to different type of genres. You always try to make sure that the music you listen to has a meaning you can relate to. But what happens when a different language is involved? Would you still decide to listen to it even if it doesn’t include your native language?

You might have heard of K-pop.

This genre is originated from South Korea, and has been going on since 1885.

But it is well known nowadays, in the 2000s. This genre is known for it’s catchy tunes and the mix of different styles.

It’s amazing to see how people in the West have openly welcomed the Korean culture.

K-pop is unique in it’s own way.

These artists have dedicated themselves to not only make music that comes from their heart, but that also involves their culture. They also have taken time out of their busy schedules to be able to involve their international fans not wanting to make them feel left out. They do concerts, meet-and-greets and even subtitle their music.

The biggest companies at the moment are S.M Entertainment, YG Entertainment and JYP Entertainment.

The record labels are also formed as agencies for their artists. Besides PSY and his Gangnam Style song, they really weren’t

able to break their way into the western area even if some have been in the Top 200 Billboards. So, who has been able to break it officially?

2018 was the year that made K-pop enter America and many other countries with foreign languages. It is all thanks to the megastar group, BTS. They are a Korean boy band that was established back in June 2013 after training for three years. They struggled in their early days, as many did. Within the span of just six years they have been able to make themselves known. But their biggest break was in 2017, in which their song DNA reached the Top 100 chart in Billboard.

Although this is K-pop, it is hard to categorize them into one specific genre.

BTS give off strong and relatable messages and they have different concepts.

In their latest concept, Love Yourself, they dedicated their time to talk about mental health issues and how above all to love yourself and where you came from. The biggest movement they have made has been to cooperate with the campaign run by UNICEF and BTS to end violence. Their fan base, Army, raised over $1 million. It’s amazing to see a group like them really put themselves in a position to help those in need and to be the voice of those who are afraid to speak.

Following BTS, is EXO, and NCT. These bands have all risen to fame with their unique way of viewing life in

diverse forms. The costumes and colors have been a huge role within the music industry in South Korea. Their personalities are very unique and extravagant.

Korean fashion is very different.

They don’t shy away from their culture as you can see in the music video Shangria-la

by Vixx. You can also see BTS in a hanbok in their 2018 Asian Music Awards performance. Hanbok is traditional Korean clothing which is used for traditional or special occasions.

The choreography within the music is perfectly put together. They perform complicated routines that are very hard to follow. It takes dedication to do it, from practicing up to twelve hours a day to being on a strict diet.

Being a Korean artist is not easy. They have had their downs. When you don’t succeed in the music industry, they usually boot them out or they disband a band. Korean beauty is also something they have to have in consideration.

Men wear makeup too. They have had their share of criticism. Their image and reputation is what makes or breaks their career.

Although K-pop is still making its way to the top, success comes in many forms. This February, we saw BTS at the Grammys, being the first Korean artist to present an award. That is a huge deal to this industry. This genre will continue to grow. It’s amazing to see how not only Koreans but the Asian community in general is rising internationally.

Avengers assemble (one last time)

Marvel releases highest grossing movie of all time By: Kimberly Hernandez The Marvel Cinematic Universe has come to a sad end.

Marvel released Avengers: Endgame, which is the 21st and second to last final movie of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Phase Three. There has been much anticipation over the past year since Avengers: Infinity War was released back in 2018.

Since then, fans and critics alike have speculated and theorized and suggested many different outcomes for Endgame. The directors of the movies of the Infinity Saga, Anthony and Joe Russo, have kept the whole movie under wraps for pretty much the whole year.

The cast themselves have had many press conferences and many meetings for Endgame, but they never were never allowed to release more than what they were told to. There were some slip ups from certain celebrities such as Mark Ruffalo and Tom Holland.

The movie itself was truly a work of art. It was a very fulfilling but sad way to end the Infinity Saga and it’s definitely something that will be remembered in history as truly epic.

The movie itself broke Box Office Records after it grossed a total of $728.5 billion worldwide after just 18 days of domestic release. It is the second highest grossing film having surpassed Jurassic Park, Avengers: Infinity War, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and Titanic, with Avatar still leading in highest at $760 million domestic gross. The movie begins exactly where we left off the heroes in Infinity War, scattered & confused. As the movie progresses, we see the heroes eventually

unite again, clash, have some cute fluff moments & all around give the audience a heart warming feel. The movie quickly moves in on the antagonist, the mighty Thanos, and how the remaining heroes deal with him. Surprisingly, as well as theorized, the heroes use time travel to go back and undo what Thanos’ snap has done.

The heroes go back in time to different time periods in which they know that the stones are located. Some heroes are lost in the quest to retrieve the stones, such as one of the original Avengers, Scarlett Johansson’s Natasha Romanoff.

We see her sacrifice herself after having a grudge match on who would be sacrificed with fellow hero, Jeremy Renner’s Clint Barton.

Natasha willingly sacrifices herself for the Soul Stone, which makes the movie even more intense, and the ending even more needed by the audiences. As the movie comes to an epic end, all of

our heroes returning to the land of the living as well as a giant stand-together of all of the heroes shown in the Infinity Saga, a war between our heroes & Thanos. As the fighting ensues & tensions rise high, Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark makes the ultimate sacrifice to save everyone from the snap - he himself snaps Thanos and his army out of existence, which takes a massive toll on his body; his wounds leading to his devastating death.

His death was something that not many fans expected, and RDJ sure did a hell of a job of playing the part well.

As Spiderman: Far From Home closes the Infinity Saga, fans are left to wonder; what else do the Russo brothers have up their sleeves, and what exactly can we expect in Phase Four? We won’t truly know what to expect until we see it, but we can only hope for the best.

Seeking refuge The powerful stories of female immigrants

By: Melissa Een Consider, for a moment, losing everything. Possessions left behind, friends dead or scattered across the continents. Everything you knew or cared about, gone.

The book We are Displaced

by Malala Yousafzai shows several girls and their experiences being displaced.

The book We are Displaced is not a wonder of prose. There is no vivid imagery or flowery language.

This novel uses simple language that was written by girls all over the world.

English is often not their first language and most have never been to the Americas.

However, even with the book’s relatively elementary writing, it is one of the most powerful pieces of writing you will ever read. The sentences and paragraphs are plain, but the story and emotion conveyed through them is anything but.

Each person’s story is unique, some resolved and content, most not. “Many people think refugees should feel only two things: gratitude toward the countries that granted them asylum and relief

to be safe.” Malala Yousafzai said “I don’t think most people understand the tangle of emotions that comes with leaving behind everything you know.”

Many of these girls have moved on with their lives, have made big differences in the experiences of other refugees.

One has settled down and begun a family; one graduated from high school and began attending college. Another is still stuck at a refugee camp and makes stoves for other displaced families to cook with.

Each story is chilling and full of danger and heartbreak. There is no sugarcoating these kinds of stories.

Even so, the tales leave you with a hope for the future. A hope that you can help, that you can ease the pains of someone who is going through a horrible situation.

The book We are Displaced isn’t poetic. It’s not a complicated rhetoric. There aren’t long paragraphs of literary devices and confounding riddles.

The authors call it as they see it, making the text simple enough for young minds and piercing enough for the most prestigious of professors.

You read this book and feel the need to make changes in both your outlook on immigration and your actions towards it. There is no way that your life will ever be the same after you read this.

Bonanza’s A recap of the cheer

By: Daniel Leonard What do sports mean to you? Some people see it as a small activity to do with friends, but others see sports as their life.

Sports at Bonanza this year have had amazing victories and painful downfalls.

Some sports this year, such as flag football, competed and fought their way to the state championship game. While coming up just short for the title due to an incomplete pass in the end zone in the final seconds of the game, their dedication and persistence is what took them to the championship game.

“It was a harsh ending for them, even though they did their best, they still need to practice harder so no mistakes are made,” sophomore Gabriel Garcia said.

Most sports this year competed hard enough to qualify for regional competition. Sports such as soccer made it to regionals, but failed to make it any further.

During the boy’s soccer season, the season started with winning games, with scores only being dreamed of such as 8-1 or 6-0, they slowly declined throughout the season, dropping

Their season came to an end when they were beat out in a penalty shootout, losing by one goal.

Senior Jordan Danskin played for the Bonanza girl’s volleyball team. While balancing school, friends and sports, she had overcame many things through her high school career as an athlete.

“One main thing I overcame during my four years of high school was being unmotivated,” Danskin said. “Just get out there, don’t be lazy.”

Some sports had a pretty rough track this year. Sports like basketball and football didn’t even qualify for regional competition.

This was the last year for a lot of the football coaches. With the new season coming in, the football team has hired new coordinators for the team.

Besides saying goodbye to coaches, some of the hardest goodbyes in sports are to your teammates. Specifically, saying goodbye to seniors who have played their sport for all four years.

“Most seniors are the best athletes in their sports, and it’s sad to see them go,” Garcia said. “They are an inspiration to upcoming athletes, especially the juniors that will be taking their place.”

Track and cross-country are two sports that not many people would like to join, let alone handle. Both sports are mainly endurance based, making you push yourself to run faster and further in the shortest time possible.

Senior Salvador Vazquez has been a runner here at Bonanza High School for his entire high school career, competing in cross-country for two years and running track all four. It takes a lot of

track and field motivation and drive for someone to push themselves every year.

“The thing that motivates me, is just pushing my body to its limits and more.

Also, liking running in general helps,” senior Salvador Vazquez said. Throughout his years here at Bonanza, he has earned the title of distance captain for track in the 2019 season.

His dedication to his sport and training has gained him so many new experiences and memories.

“Running has given me experi-

ences that I will always cherish, whether it’s new PR’s,(Personal Records) or memories that will never be replaced,” Vasquez said.

Overall in this year alone, there have been a lot of many accomplishments in sports. Teams have made it regionals and some have even made it to states.

While others struggled throughout the year, some teams didn’t qualify to make it to regionals. Some reasons that teams didn’t make it to regionals or states have to do with injuries. Sports like track,

soccer and football are some of the sports where athletes are most prone to injuries. Small but painful injuries such as shin splints, twisted ankles and bruised muscles can be the downfall in any athlete, even the best ones.

We can only hope and watch as athletes practice and play their hardest, training for the next years to come.

“Every sport should qualify for regionals, maybe even state next year,” Garcia said. “They just need to train hard enough.”

School players grow and change throughout the year

Athlete growth challenges students mentally and physically.

By: Haylea Kenitzer Everyone will change and grow throughout their lives. Growth is something that occurs naturally and affects who we are.

Change happens to people physically as well as mentally. Growth and change go hand in hand when we evolve as our own person and find out who we really are.

Everything we do helps us flourish whether it is taking excelled classes, learning to cook or playing sports.

Sports can really help students grow to help them understand what they like and don’t like.

Knowing what you need to change really helps push through obstacles and reach your student goals. “Some changes were, I had to lose weight and get stronger physically and mentally,” freshman Edward Jackson said. “I had to change my attitude towards school because to excel in football you need to excel in school.”

As a freshman on the football team, Jackson has made many goals for his upcoming years and his driving motivation is what is making him not give up.

“I don’t know how to explain but I didn’t give up everything about football, its mental,” Jackson said. “If you’re not mentally strong then football isn’t for you.” Jackson knows for himself the goals he wants to accomplish and he knows the will power he needs to been able to achieve them.

Volleyball is a competitive sport where you need to know what’s going on at all times. Balancing school and sports can be hard for some. Even if you are mentally prepared, balancing physical health and good communication are keys to growth not only within oneself, but as a team. “I knew I wasn’t going to be the best on the team but I worked harder to be better,” freshman Claire Butts said.

“My friends on the team pushed me to do better.” Butts said. Butts decided to change her diet and communicate with her teammates on freshman volleyball.

“By the end of the season I got better and I could control the ball,” Butts said. “I became more self confident with my body.

I was having more of a positive outlook on life.” Being positive helps mentally prepare

students for playing sports.

There are some changes we will make due to personal choice such as eating healthy and extra practice. There are also some changes your body will put you through when you use repetitive muscles and memory to play the game.

“Naturally when you run long distance, you burn unnecessary muscles,” senior Salvador Vazquez of the track team said, “Since I was already skinny, I gained a good amount on my legs and thighs.”

Over the season, many students have made much growth and change. “The feeling I had at the beginning of season is energized, feeling I could qualify, I had a lot of hype,” Vazquez said. “But at the end of the season, I felt tired and in pain.

I wanted to be done with the season, and now I don’t want to let go of all of my friends in track, especially the ones who are distant.”

Sports are a priority in many students life. As a student going through pressure in high school, sports or clubs can help achieve great growth. No matter what age they are, they are always changing.
