What not to get your Valentine By Kiana Silva-Hall From a bad gifts to good gifts. Valentines day is a day filled with love. People show their affections in many different ways. One of the main ways is with a gift. People are really happy when receiving one but sometimes people are disappointed. “I once got candy inside of a sock. It was terrible because I hate feet,” junior Cattrinna Whinston said. Her reaction caused her to have a gross look on her face and she didn’t even take the gift. Whinston thinks that a bad gift would be getting someone a huge box or bag with nothing in it or with something really small. It gets their hopes up then disappoints them. “If you can’t think of something then just get them candies and a bear,” Whinston said. “You should never give them something they hate, even as a joke,” Whinston said. You wouldn’t want them to be mad at you on Valentines Day so try and give them something they’d want. The sweetest gift Whinston has gotten was a gigantic teddy bear and a huge box of chocolates. She was so excited that she ran and jumped on the bear. “I was so happy and I blushed a lot,” Whinston sad. Even though Whinston has gotten great gifts she lacked giving a good gift once. She gave a card box with a puppet that pops out

screaming. “I thought it was really cute but he disagree,” Whinston said. When it comes to giving gifts Whinston likes to give, “I like the idea and I prefer to give over receiving,” Whinston said. She thinks it doesn’t always need to be an item. There are other types of gifts such as hugs or a simple kiss. A gift is not at all necessary but doesn’t give an enlighten feeling to someone. Sophomore Aldo Toribio Quiterio agrees that when it comes to giving a gift that it depends on the attitude and is seen more as a generous thing. “Not getting anything at is a bad gift itself, something good would be something adorable,” Toribio Quiterio said. Try to not give some-

thing your other wouldn’t want. As Whinston said a gift doesn’t have to be an item. Toribio Quiterio’s sweetest gift was spending time with a loved one. “I was thankful for them being there,” Toribio Quiterio said. He doesn’t think he’s ever given a bad gift before or at least hopes not. “I wouldn’t call it a terrible gift but all I got once was just a kiss over facetime, it was pretty tacky,” Toribio Quiterio said. His reaction to the gift was a simple thanks. “Something bad would not getting anything even when they promised something,” sophomore Alyssia Acres said. It’s always good when they get you something because they gave effort into giving you something.

“I got a really worn out teddy bear and one of the eyes were missing but I still kept it because I felt bad,” Acres said. She appreciated the fact that someone got her something and felt love and wanted. She’d rather not want a gift because she feels bad when she doesn’t have on e a gift in return. Try to make sure that when giving a gift it’s something the person would want. If you really want it to make an impact then put time into searching for one. e a gift in return. How to make your relationship last By Kiana Silva-Hall “Learn to love yourself before getting into a relationship,” Maysan Raleigh said. Sophomore Maysan Raleigh’s idea of a healthy relationship is people who don’t argue and get along with each other. “I imagine having no problems and having fun together,” Raleigh said. Raleigh’s purpose of a relationship is to be together through marriage, have children and grow old together. She thinks you should treat your other with respect; love and you should be there for them through the good and the bad. “Buy each other food and gifts,” Raleigh said, “It will definitely make you happy.” When asked how you should help your loved one when they’re feeling down Raleigh said to show them love. Hug them, feed them. “They won’t feel alone and that’s a comforting feeling,” Raleigh said. Being in a relationship, Raleigh says its good because you have someone to provide for you and you’re not alone. “The bad thing about relationships is that you can get cheated on,” Raleigh said. “They can leave you and break your heart.” When it comes to arguments you shouldn’t be distant. You should talk it out and see their point of view. “Instead there is yelling, crying and the couple leaves each other alone then the problem doesn’t get solved,” Raleigh said.

6

Kiana Silva-Hall, EOTT

A couple celebrates a win together.

Arguments are pretty common but you shouldn’t cause them even if you’re bored. “If we had something planned and he cancelled it I would be sad but would understand if it reasonable,” Raleigh said. Sometimes your significant other can’t always spend time with you and that’s okay. Don’t automatically assume that he doesn’t want to hang out with you he gets busy sometimes. For the people who want to be in a relationship Raleigh’s advice is “learn how to love yourself before you get into a relationship,” Raleigh said. “If you don’t it’s going to be hard if you guys break up because you’ll be used to depending on someone else.” That’s Raleigh advice for people who want to be in a relationship.

Eye of the Tiger

Raleigh believes that you have the right one when you have trust; faith and you guys are safe and happy. You still have butterflies and he looks at you like he’s still trying to win your love. “Spending quality time together and going out on a Friday night with the one you love. That’s what comes to mind when I think of relationships,” sophomore Emely Santoyo said. You should always try to be there for them through the good and the bad. Santoyo believes that the purpose of a relationship is to find someone who is more enjoyable than the rest. It’s someone to be comfortable with and do silly things together. Her idea of a healthy relationship is being loyal to each other and having good

communication. “If you’re constantly arguing and having not trying to understand each other than you shouldn’t be together. That’s unhealthy,” Santoyo said. When in a relationship you should always treat your other with respect. Santoyo agrees. She thinks you should be able to have fun and be immature with each other yet be when mature when needed. “If your significant other is feeling down be there for them,” Santoyo said, “Talk about what going on and comfort them. If you can, try and take their mind off of it.” When asked for the pros of a relationship Santoyo said that being best friends and lovers at the same time is best. “Having someone to go to and talk all your problems to is a good feeling, especially if that person is your other half. You know you can trust

them,” Santoyo said. Some cons of being in a relationship would be the fighing. No one likes to argue yet it’s almost always common in relationships. She said, “Sometimes you’ll never know when it’s going to be over.” When you get into an argument there’s always things you should do versus what actually happens. “When arguing you guys should both be voicing your opinions. While you’re doing that the other should be listening,” Santoyo said. What actually happens is that couples argue and yell at each other. “They lack communication when they should pay attention to what they’re know their place,” Santoyo said.” Unfortunately sometimes it gets physical. For people who want to be in a relationship Santoyo’s advice would be “You have to have patience, respect and the key is to trust each other.” Don’t jump to conclusions and take it slow. “Don’t pay so much attention to how long you guys have been together, it can affect your mind.” “You can’t date someone for a few months and treat it like a five year relationship,” Santoyo said, “It won’t work, you have to treat it one day at a time.” You know you’ve found the right one because every time you’re with each other you still value each other’s time every single day. As if they’re with you for the first time. “You know because they have trust and faith in you. If you’re going out they’re

worried about your well being not concerned and doubting who you’ll be with and what you’re doing.” She also said, When you guys argue, he or she tries to understand you’re point of view and respects your decisions. When sophomore Selena Castano thinks relationships she believes that it’s good for you. “You love each other and with love everyone is real with each other and everyone is kind,” Castano said. A healthy relationship in Castano’s mind is to be honest, loyal and to see each other frequently. You have to care for each other and do little things for each other. “Treat your other with respect, kindness and it’s always good to make them laugh,” Castano said. If your partner is feeling down you want to do your best to be there for them. Castano thinks you should try and make them laugh and give them food. “I’d try to fix the problem and understand it,” Castano said. “After that I’d ask how I could help.” Everyone knows a relationship can be hassle but there is always those very good things too. You feel loved and “everyone wants to be loved,” Castano said. You have someone to always care for you, someone who would do anything to make you happy. You have the opportunity to make good memories and discover things with that one special person and you’ll also have someone to tell

“Everyone wants to be loved.” -Selena Castano

your problems to; someone who wants to listen. Some things that can have a negative outlook on a relationship are lack of time or your family doesn’t approve of them. Sometimes it can be a little more hurtful like when you love someone but they don’t treat you right. In any relationship you should always focus on the positive and let it outlook the negative. Arguments can end two ways, a make up or a break up. No one wants to break up over an argument because they can easily be fixed. “During an argument you should fix the problem and not avoid the situation,” Castano said. Sometimes that doesn’t always happen. What usually happens is arguing and screaming names at each other. “People tend to ignore each other and that causes the problem to get worst,” Castano said. Try not

to let your personal opinion get in the way and always try to think of how your other feels. If your significant other can’t spend time with you Castano said “ I wouldn’t be ad if it was for a good reason, stuff happens.” Castano’s advice for future relationships is “Give a 100% commitment.” If you don’t really care for that person then don’t be with; you’ll only hurt them. Be faithful and honest if you do then you’ll be happy. The goal of a relationship is to find the right one. Castano knows you’ve found the right one by how they look at you, the way he treats you, respects/ cares for you and what he does for you. “You’ll know by the little things and the small details,” Castano said. “If you have problems, you know because of the way they handle the situation.”

Adventure is just around the corner

Omar Perez talks about the power of Congress in government class.

By: Jessica Ross Weight lifting. Full-time student. Navy. College. A medical degree. These are the future plans for Omar Perez. Perez is a normal high school student, and he’s trying to get by unnoticed and graduate this June. With an alright start to high school during freshman year, he has learned from his mistakes and become an achieving student. As everyone says, freshman year is a trial run. Obviously, it is better to not mess up your freshman year, but remember to do better in the later years. Like everyone else, freshman year for Perez was his trial run. He didn’t have the great-

join the marines. “Serving the military seems like an interesting experience,” Perez said. “It’s something I want to do.” He is also interested in serving

through the frontlines. The main reason Perez wants to join the military is to pay for college. He is interested in becoming an EMT or working in emergency medical services. He’s also interested in learning mercy medical, because he finds it very useful and engrossing. If he ever finds himself without a job, an education in mercy medical would benefit him in looking for employment. Every medical field typically can put a mercy medical degree into work. Saving and helping people that need urgent care is something he wants to do. One of Perez’s friends, Arik Slimp, truly believes Perez will do wonderfully in the future. “I see Omar being

his senior year, he has many goals he looks forward to accomplishing before the school year is over and a few of these goals have been accomplished. So far, Perez has talked to a military recruiter about the navy, the process of it and so on. He has also been reaching amazing amounts of weights in weight lifting. What Perez hopes to accomplish before this school year ends is taking the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery, also known as the ASVAB, and earning a score of 80 on the tactical section of

the test. Getting accepted into the Light Armored Reconnaissance is also on his list. During the rest of the school year, Perez hopes to be able to squat 405 pounds and bench 225 pounds in weightlifting. He can now squat 100 pounds daily and he looks forward to gaining more each day. Keeping his grades up and graduating is always a factor in his daily life as well. Perez plans on learning how to swim, joining the swim team and making memories there. “Senior year is just another school year,” Perez said. At graduation, Perez feels

like he will be nervous, but happy. It will be a once in a lifetime experience, graduating from high school. He doesn’t think he’ll cry during the event, but he does know he’ll miss seeing his friends all the time. One of his biggest inspirations and role model is his brother, Eric Perez. He wants to make his brother proud, as well as the rest of his family. Ariana Monclova is another inspiration to him, in his normal high school day. Monclova and Perez have been friends since they went to Johnson Junior High. “Ariana is pretty lame,” Perez

joked. “But she is cool.” They both encourage each other to do better and get along with each other very well. “Ariana and Omar always hang out with each other,” Jonathan Marin said. “Nothing could separate their friendship.” Perez is living a normal high school student life, simply trying to get by and graduate. His goals are his own and wants to encourage others to do what they want to do. Perez wants to set an example for other students. His life is his own, living it as he wants to.

Taxes for dummies By: Kiana Silva-Hall

Taxes are something that everyone will have as a part of in their life. If someone doesn’t pay their taxes, then they can go to jail, but a good thing that can reflect off of taxes is the tax returns. It depends on how much a person makes in a year to how much money a person can get in return. It’s stressful and it’s kind of messed up. Sophomore, Beverlin Giron has learned her “tax skills” from her parents, she was taught her freshmen year. “I learned that when you file your taxes, then if you’re under the age of 18 then you are still dependent on your parents taxes,” Giron said. She has found doing it online helps her. When asked if getting a job and starting taxes was worth it, Giron said she didn’t regret it and she doesn’t always think about taxes. Luckily, it hasn’t made a big deal in her life. “It was a little hard to keep up with at first, but now I have the hang of it,” Giron said “I wouldn’t say I was scared but I was concerned.” Taxes

aren’t something that’s easy, in fact most adults struggle with it today. Giron agrees that taxes are unnecessary at times. She’s still confused by some things but she’s used to it by now. Senior Ben Martinez has also shared experiences with Giron. Martinez had his parents and some other coworkers teach him at the early age of 17. He found it hard to keep up with at first, but now

he’s used to it. Usually when someone does their taxes they can go to others to do it for them. When Martinez started he was uncertain and unready. Martinez doesn’t regret getting a job as he finds that taxes is a small portion and doesn’t feel like anything is getting taken away. Martinez sees taxes as a hassle, but the good out of it are lower taxes equals’ lower income. He has come to realize that it’s something everyone has to do at the end of the day.Mathematics teacher Victoria Calabrese isn’t very fond of taxes. “If there weren’t taxes, you’d be getting more money, “ Calabrese said. Someone

pays for taxes pretty much whenever they go to work. It gets taken out of their work check. “Taxes are mentally defeating,” Calabrese said . “You work really hard and you get very little.” Taxes are expensive because of inflation, which means the cost of things going up. The government also has a big part of it. Based on how long it takes to do taxes depends. Someone pays all the time when they work, “When filing taxes sometimes you owe and sometimes you get back,” Calabrese said. “You should try to learn as much as you can about it and stay on top of it,” Calabrese said.

Teens work hard to balance work, school, life By: Presley Cole Trying to balance lifes everyday obligations can be difficult. Things such as work, school, activities or clubs, all while trying to manage a social life can be stressful. This may lead to some to wonder how can it be easy for teens to balance everything. When asked how stressed she is on a scale of 1 to 10, Bonanza junior Sarah Stephenson rated a 9 on the daily. Her everyday responsibilities include, but are not limited to dance, school and work. Although she has dance everyday after

school, homework, and has a job 4 days a week, Stephenson manages to still keep her social life, “I’m just a social person”, she simply states.“ It’s not that hard when you put your mind to it,” she later adds. Though she has a passion for dance, when asked what responsibility she would choose over the others,“ School, because I need to stay focused on my GPA for college,” she expresses. If she could give any advice to other students trying to balance everything, “Just try your hardest and you’ll be okay,” Stephenson said. Also a junior, Dominque

Gilbert considers her self very mature for putting in an effort to manage everything. “Sometimes I get everything done, but it gets hard.” She said, “ Sometimes I’m really responsible, but other times it takes me like 4 hours to write my name on a paper.” She would rather choose work over school, but ultimately chooses school. “Manage your time better, and don’t put things off,” Gilbert said. Tyler Bridgeman, a senior, has always done track & field, worked a job and also is involved in other activities. When asked how

praised he is for managing everything, he says never really been praised for his management skills throughout high school. He would rather choose work over school as well and says he will continue to do that. “Have a regulated sleep schedule and take time to balance everything.” All and all, no matter what responsibilities control the everyday life of some teens whether it bea a job or extra activities, with the right mindset, it will get easier. Just stay focused on your goals and you’ll get to your future in no time.

The adult life and how to manage it

By: Rhea Colli Life. Freedom. Responsibilities. Growing up can be wonderful, but as time progresses life may not be what it seems. Maturing into an adult requires certain qualities, such as having a common sense and the ability to handle things in a proper and orderly fashion. In life, not everything will be handed down easily. There is going to be realizations that stress, financial problems and miscellaneous troubles will be involved in a daily adult life. That’s just how the cookie crumbles. Part of accepting this part of life, is also accepting the responsibilities and mistakes that one may make as an adult. “I feel like being an adult takes a lot of courage,” Jackie Lapus said, “there are two important traits to survive adulthood; it’s competence and being responsible.” Soon getting a stable job becomes a priority and that really plays a role in the

12

stabilizing of life. Bills and mortgage payments will begin to pile up, if there are insufficient funds to pay for them. It’s important to stay prepared and be ready for any emergency that life may throw. It’s impossible to foresee the future ahead, but heading down the right path reveals the light of guidance that will lead the way. Entering the realm of the ral and cruel world, may change the whole perspective of everything that one may have perceived. Anything can happen and it was just made that way. “Once you have a family, your life completely changes,” Roberto Colli said, “you have to be stable and financially set because kids take over everything; it’s not about you anymore.” Growing up has its benefits and cons; there are opportunities to anything and everyone has the choice to choose what kind of life they want to live. Everyone’s life differs; it’s based on preferences and what people desire.

“There are two important traits to survive adulthood; it’s competence and being responsible.” -Jackie Lapus At the end of the day, life is an ongoing thing and instead of wanting to fast forward, the objective is to slow down and to enjoy everyday, anticipating the journey. Being an adult doesn’t mean giving up all the good times,

or making new memories. It means with all that maturity that was gained, the better choices can be made and the life that is desired will be pursued.

New trends and past trends

By: Fatima Gutierrez The current trends individuals see these days are highly influenced by young people and their innovating ideas. These days, there are a variety of trends being seen on social media, TV and at school. With new trends quickly rising making businesses go up in the market the old trends are still present. “You see many young girls wearing immodest clothing,” freshmen Cortlin Talbot, expressed what new trends people have seen around lately. Twelve, thirteen and fourteen year olds are being exposed to new trends which cause them to think it’s alright for their age to be wearing such exposing clothing. In society today there are many young girls wearing the brand name, Pink. These girls are wearing Pink sweaters,

jackets, shirts, leggings, even buying Pink water holders and blankets. Pink is a very popular brand used all around the nation by young ladies that love the comfortness they receive by wearing this clothing line. As for guys, they can be seen wearing a popular hairstyle called the man bun. All they do is style their hair back and tie it in a bun. In addition the community can also see the new trend of guys wearing khaki or black joggers, which they like to style with athletic wear brands such as Nike, Adidas or et cetera. “In middle school I remember wearing really, really ugly dress code, like we had to wear blue collar shirts with nasty khaki pants and so I always tried to make my outfit fashionable with chokers or even suspenders,” freshmen Kalynne Hammond said.

The old trends consisted of high waisted jeans or shorts, tight rolling and sagging jeans. These days there aren’t many guys sagging because they’ve left it behind in the past years. There are rarely girls wearing high waisted jeans instead they are doing tight rolling. Tight rolling consists of rolling your jeans up, folding them and customizing them with high heels or any other shoe. Tight rolling used to be a past trend, but came back just recently Freshmen, Araceli Barraza thinks these new trend are positive because change is good. “The negative thing about

these new trends is that everyone is wearing the same thing and the positive is that change is good, trends are modified all the time,” Barraza said. “It’s good to see change when people wear unique things and distinguish themselves from other people.” People don’t want to be stuck with the same trends for years. They want designers and social media to share different ideas on what new fashion style people can try and help globalize these new innovations. People get bored of the current trends and want something advanced and exciting to show off.

Dating and school Melissa Diaz, EOTT

Pros, cons on relationships vs. education By: Melissa I. Diaz Mixed feelings, break ups, emotions, and stressors. Dating can be difficult especially when it comes to school. Dating could be great, and could make memories and could create happiness. On the other hand, dating could be bad in so many ways. What if when you break up, it could break your heart? It could also get you distracted from your friends and family, but most importantly from school. Here is some pros and cons on dating and school. Someone could be thinking about their other too much. “Personally, I get distracted easily when it comes to school,” freshman Kimberly Ramirez said. When dating, all your attention to your partner to give them that satisfaction. When dating, stay focus on school. “School comes first before anything,” Ramirez said. Dating could also have consequences such as break ups, if you guys break up, you’re going to be thinking about your ex during school.

14

Eye of the Tiger

“Guys are just for the moment and aren’t worth all your time away from school.” -Frannie Zelaya, freshman People have mixed feelings and guys just aren’t worth all that. Dating can also make someone feel good. Sophomore Jenny Galeana has been in a relationship for 1 year and 7 months. She plays flag football and she has good grades. “I enjoy it, I really do love it,” Galeana said. Galeana has a healthy relationship with her boyfriend. He supports her in all her choice of time whether it’s with him or not. “Sometimes we fight but its point-

less arguments,” Galeana said. Galeana and her boyfriend fight as well so there’s no such thing as perfect in the world. “You just have to know who you’re going out with and that’s it,” Galeana said. Jenny keeps her relationship fun and serious. Be smart about who you choose. Dating can also benefit people. ”Sometimes dating can encourage you to do better things in life,” sophomore Narda Banuelos said. Dating can also make someone like school; it’s also something to look good for. Banuelos also says that dating can be stressful. “You have to put things aside for that person and it’s like what for, were just hurting ourselves,” Banuelos said. Dating could also have consequences, “what if you get pregnant or end up leaving your friends just because he is more important than your friends who are always there for you,” Banuelos said. “It’s a nice experience to make memories,” Banuelos said. Things happen for a reason and better things are out there for you.

All work and no play: Can we survive? Next day off won’t be until April 10 By: Iris Thaoxaochay January. February. March. Three months with a total of only three days off. For most students, school has been manageable so far because of the lengthy breaks we’ve had. However, these next three months are probably going to be the toughest time of the year for students. With only the weekends for a break, things might get tough, but there are ways to still be on track, keep grades high and still keep your stress level to a minimum. For students who have been successful in their classwork so far, it’s important to keep up your hard work and focus. Even though long breaks help, it’s not impossible to have fun and maintain our work. Remember the bigger picture; stay focused on your goal and just do your work. It’s important to plan things out logically. Don’t try to cram all your homework in one day, intead space everything out. If you rush through everything and focus on quantity then the quality of the work will be worse. If you’re a senior, think

about that diploma, that graduation night and how all your hard work will pay off in the end. Even if your grades haven’t been too great this past semester, it’s not too late to improve. In fact this long stretch of school might even help you stay focused on school. We’re required to be here anyway, so why not do your work and make something out of the required time you have in school. This amount of school and work that might come flooding our way can obscure our focus of basic needs. If we neglect things like sleep and food, our state of mind is not going to be what it would be if we were well rested. Getting the right amount

of sleep and food is very important. Try not to stay up all night doing your homework, instead start a few hours earlier than you usually do instead of taking a few hours of your sleeping time. All work and no play is a very dangerous combination. Don’t forget to reward yourself, make time for yourself and enjoy the free time that may rarely come. It’s important to take a break once and awhile. While maybe going out every night isn’t a good idea, set aside a time on the weekends to hang out with your friends or stay at home and relax. The most important thing to keep in mind is to maintain a schedule. Having a schedule will help you organize your priorities and

encourage you to stick to this schedule. For some writing things out and planning with a notebook and a pen helps. Planning ahead helps you see what your week or month or even day is going to be like. Know your work ethic and how much work you can do a day. Try not to cram all your work in one day if you know you can’t handle it, instead spread it out while still allowing safety time in case you fall behind These next three months are going to be tough whether you have AP classes, honor classes or regular classes. It won’t be impossible if you stay focused, do your work, sleep, eat, make free time and set a schedule.

Female perspective: Healing from a breakup There are six stages to getting over love By: Katherine Teran When it comes to heartbreak you go through many emotions. Sadness, anger, denial, loneliness, acceptance and finally happiness. Breaking up is not the end of the world, but it still hurts. We all go through it at one point of our life, but it happens and there is no way to stop it. There is a way to ease the pain. Stopping the pain takes time but it will stops and you will heal. It is not the end of the world if your so-called soul mate leaves you. Like the saying goes, you’re one heartbreak closer to finding your one true love. Sadness. The first emotion you feel during a breakup is, sadness. You feel sad, because you really thought they were the one but they were not, they were a waste of your time. To get over the sadness all you can do is cry it out. Get your favorite chick flick, snacks and start crying. Anger. The second emotion will be anger because you’re angry with your exlover because they played you and broke your heart. There is no real cure for anger but what you could do is get a picture of them, glue it to a dartboard and start throwing darts at them. Every time you hit an eye it’s a bull’s-eye. Denial. The third emotion is denial. You can’t accept that they left you and broke your heart. Every second of the day you’re waiting for them to text you, asking

for forgiveness but it never comes. The one thing to do is to realize they are never coming back and if they try to come back, you have to stay strong and say no to them. Loneliness. The fourth emotion is loneliness. You feel alone. You feel like no one is by your side and you’re feeling like you will never ever find love again. Trust me you’re not alone, you have your friends and your family. Get your best friend or one of your family members and talk it out. Say what you feel, get everything

Eye of the Tiger

“Laugh as much as you breathe and love as much as you live.” -Johnny Depp off your chest. Once you talked it out you will feel much better then you did before. Acceptance. The fifth emotion is acceptance. You have finally accepted that they left you and they are never coming back. You do not need them never did, never will. Now that you have accepted the fact you could move on and find someone new. Get out there find a new lover.

Happiness. The last emotion is happiness. Know that you have completely forgotten them you can live happy. Now that you’re happy, if they ever try to come back you can be like Beyoncé and tell them “I’m just too much for you.” Going through a breakup is not the end of the world. It’s just a bump in the road to finding your one true love. Breakups may hurt, but healing takes time. When the time comes you will go looking again, but now you will be careful and find a keeper. A relationship is a two-way job and if only one person is working, the job will never get done. There are many parts of a relationship trust is a big part of it. If there is no trust then there is no relationship, like the saying goes trust is like glass, once you break it, you can’t fix it, and even if you do there will always be cracks in it.

By: Michael Flynn Breakups are a horrible part of dating. Even the mutual breakup is a little tough to get past, and it can sometimes seem like your world is crashing right before your eyes. There are many steps to getting past a breakup, and many ways to get past the challenges brought up by a recent breakup. These challenges can range from trying to remain friends all the way to trying to get passed the hurt from the past breakup. When a breakup got me down, I like to have time alone. Maybe listen some music, watch your favorite movie or even go sleep. This will help you sort out the breakup, as well as the events leading up to the breakup. Sometimes the reasons become more obvious when you can go over them. Keep in mind, the most loving thing you can do is let them go, even when you want them to stay. If you really

care about them, you should be able to let them go. Find your own reasons why this will make it better for the two of you. After a little while though, I find talking to someone is helpful. Let out how you feel to a close friend or family member. Even if it feels weird, you should tell someone how you are feeling. Don’t beat yourself up for it either, after all, maybe they weren’t the one. Talking about issues will seem tough, but support is the best coping mechanism you can gain. A group of your friends will be helpful for pushing past the breakup, and they might even

get you ready for a new guy or girl. As time passes, you should begin accepting life without them. Try to remember the good things. Even if it seems hard towards the beginning, it is helpful to not hate them for ending the relationship, even if the reasons don’t seem great. Do yourself a favor and don’t lash out at them. All it does is makes you look like an idiot. If you can, try to be friends with them and even if you can’t you should still be nice to them. Your ex could be taking just as bad as you are, and they don’t want you to be the ex from hell, even if others think you should be. After time, everything will settle down. At this point, you should have accepted that your relationship is over, and there is no changing it. The past is the past, and the future is right around the corner. You should start living life

normally, and maybe even be ready to be ready to start crushing on a new girl or girl. Towards toward the end of the road, you will think about the old relationship and laugh at the good times, smirk at the embarrassing moments, and maybe even smile at the thought of them. Despite what you think, a small piece of them has rubbed off on you, and you can be proud of it. No matter what they become, you loved them for who they were. Before this breakup, you loved each other, laughed at each other’s jokes, and cried at each other’s defeats. You should be happy about the time you had with them. You shouldn’t be sad about the relationship ending, but instead be happy about the good times ahead. Head up, smile bright and remember this isn’t the end of the story, but the beginning of a new chapter. It is all going to be better from here on out and who knows, maybe the next person will be the right one.

The art form of rejecting poiltely

By: Presley Rae Cole February, the month of chocolate covered strawberries, cheesy dates and especially, rejection. Have you ever been rejected? Well, I have and rejection is rough. Though, I also have experience in being the rejecter, which honestly is worse. I find myself too often avoiding the role as rejecter and sparing the feelings of others. Though, sometimes you just have to do it. There are ways to reject, hopefully without all the tears and awkward backlash. Prepare yourself for what you’re about to do. You need to take into consideration that you’re not just simply telling a person “no”. You have to take the other person’s feeling into consideration, whether you want to or not. I usually avoid rejecting because I can’t come to terms with the fact I might hurt someone. This is typically the step I skip and ultimately mess everything up, so learn from my mistakes. Don’t sugar coat any-

18

thing, and be upfront as soon as possible. Leading them on could turn into a lot more of a problem than the actual rejection, because at least rejecting is being honest with the person. This may seem hard, because some people are fragile, but it’s the right way. Be sure to give some type of hints that rejection is coming their way. Things like just being friendly, no flirting of any sort might help get it across. Continuing to lead them on could have a more drastic impact on the person. Pick an appropriate time and place. With that being said, do it in person someplace neutral, you wouldn’t want to be rejected in front of a crowd. Also, do not reject someone over text; it

“Be honest about your feelings, leaving anything out might cause more confusion of both people.” makes room for an opportunity of awkward stares and uncomfortable situations later due to the fact you didn’t meet face to face in the first place. Be honest about your feelings, leaving anything out might cause more confusion of both people. Saying everything upfront will clear the air and just help settle things smoothly. Leaving things at a mu-

tual agreement will help you know where you both stand emotionally and give the other person time to adjust. Don’t beat yourself up over how the person reacts. If you honestly did the best you could, then that’s all you could have done. Whatever they decide to do next is all on them. Hopefully this helps you reject anybody this February in the nicest way possible.

Spare Nell your sympathy

Sarah Maria Griffin

By: Manon Ladeyn “This was why she had to build a companion, build a boy with an electric voice, so she’d have someone to confide in when the people around her were too much for her to handle. Too flawed. Too human.” This passage came from the novel Spare and Found Parts by Sara Maria Griffin, which really provides an image of the kind of person that Nell Crane, the main character, is. A city where survivors are all lacking a certain body part, Nell’s father, a well-known scientist created the biomechanical limbs. Out of all the survivors Nell is the only one with a mechanical heart. As the people around her contribute to the society Nell is conflicted on her future to the people. But being the child of a well-known

“This novel’s pace was too slow.” scientist the task has become harder then she thought, how will she attempt to outshine her father? Science fiction, horror and suspense are all present in this novel. It was originally published on Oct. 4, 2016, by Green Willow Books. Griffin is 28 years old and lives in Dublin, Ireland, in a small red brick house by the sea with her husband. She writes about monsters, growing up and everything those two things have in common. As you read this book, which is her first published novel, you can see how she re-creates monsters and growing up into Nell’s

life.

This novel has great suspense in it, but the pace was too slow. It took a while for the main character to have the idea to build a robotic man and to put it in action. It felt like most of the story was wasted just waiting for her to do something. It takes a while to see the story evolve. It just starts off with her story, but it just needs to be summarized so that the reader doesn’t get bored. Even though it is slow in

pace, if the reader continues reading it comes to a point where Nell’s story is really captivating. The way she has to live and accept the way she is built, really contributes to today and future’s society as a whole it is how to accept who you are and showing others what you are capable of. A story of hope, challenging ideas, family, expectations and the human relationships with technology. Rating: 4/5

Is there life on Mars?

By: Jayla Griffith Filled with impact and emotion, The Space Between Us was a major hit to the theaters. The movie was just all around incredible. Peter Chelsom did an absolutely outstanding job of directing this film and putting it all together in a way the audience can almost relate to. Asa Butterfield was an incredible actor. He really made the Gardner, the main character, look and really had a legit dedication throughout the movie and Butterfield made it look so real. Butterfield gave his character meaning and feeling to a great extent. I think Butterfield made an incredible actor

20

for this film and I truly believe he will be a sensational actor in future movies. He was also the main character in The Boy in the Striped Pajamas and other top-rated movies. Britt Robertson, “Tulsa” played the role of Gardner’s girl friend type character that lives on Earth. They plan to meet and do anything to see each other, but throughout the movie he discovers that his organs can’t take the gravity on Earth since his body is so immune to space and how it works and functions up there rather than down on Earth. Gardner and Tulsa want to discover more about Earth before his time runs out, so they do some crazy things all through the film. The plot over everything is just incredible.

Eye of the Tiger

It’s a romantic kind of movie, including a little heartbreak but a ton of adventurous action. It is truly an emotional rollercoaster of a movie with all of the small parts and stories that combine together creating such an amazing film, that people can now call their new favorite movie. The beginning when everything was introduced and basically a quick run down of why his life is the way it is and how he got there and everything was really great. It was super cool the way they incorporated his mom, but it was of course very sad what tragically happened to her. The way he met the girl and how they socialize on the daily and also know so much yet so little about each

other was nicely written. It was super intriguing how they made each character, mostly Tulsa and Gardner, so specific to their personality because it made so much sense and pieced a ton of puzzle pieces together. There was honestly no part of the movie that was not enjoyable or boring. It was very well put together and a great movie to recommend to somebody else. This movie is a must see and should become well known and get the credit it deserves. Overall, The Space Between Us was a great movie, with no perks to several people. It is such a good happy-feel movie that’s recommended by viewers. Rating: 5/5

A fire inside your heart By: Alondrah S. Ramirez

It started off with just a drum kit. The punk rock band, AFI are now 10 albums into their career. AFI, A Fire Inside, released their new album The Blood album. Starting off with 60 tracks in the studio and slimming it down to 14 must’ve been a dilemma for the band. “Deciding what songs go on the record were much harder then than it is now,” lead singer Davey Havok said. “ Back then if you didn’t put the track on the album it would never be heard from.” Compared to their past albums, they’ve experimented with many different sounds and now seemingly finding the perfect balance of hard rock and 80’s melodies to create a really unique sound. They’re similar to well known bands like My Chemical Romance, Sleeping With Sirens and Rise Against. They are inspired by bands like Green Day, 7 Seconds and The Cure. AFI was formed in Ukiah, California 1991 while they were still in high school. They broke up in high school, but got back together during their holiday in Christmas break. The band members behind these lyrics and melodies are lead singer Davey Havok, guitarist Jade Puget, drummer Adam Carson and bassist Hunter Bergan. Making music comes from the soul, it’s hard to just love one track. “I can’t pick favorite songs,” Havok said. “ We’re

just too close to it.” Around this time, bands usually begin to lose their touch and the music begins downfalls. That’s not a problem for A Fire Inside. They come back on fire with catchy new tones. Although many may be repetitive, they’re left stuck in your head and will have you singing it all day. Starting off with a nice and catchy beginning named “Dark Snow” had a big touch of electronic and a hint of guitar blending in together beautifully. The melody and harmony brings back a hint of their past music and adds on

what will be in for AFI. “So Beneath You” has a hard guitar intro with drums and bass in the background. Bringing back the rock sensation he’s talking to a girl saying how much he would love to get to know her and will not stop trying. “You’ve built your wall so high that no one could climb it, but I’m gonna try,” saying that he wont stop until he gets a chance. Ending their record with a bang, “The Wind That Carries Me Away” starts with drums that causes the listener to feel the music. Separation between one another is some-

thing everyone can relate to Their album can be found on Spotify and Youtube, or bought in stores such as Walmart and Target. It’s definitely a little different than when AFI started in 1991, but they do keep many of the rhythms that AFI is known for. Music isn’t meant to be the same, but meant to come from the heart and soul, and from blood, sweat and tears. Their fans can’t wait seeing what else they come up because it with will certainly be captivating. Rating: 4/5

In Vegas, chicken is king

Ben Martinez, EOTT

By: Ben Martinez Is Chick-Fil-A worth the hype? On the corner of Eastern and Ione is where many will find the answers to their prayers. Finally, a Chick-Fil-A opened up in the Las Vegas/Henderson area. The chain restaurant offers a wide variety of dishes oriented around chicken as the main ingredient. Nuggets, tenders, salads, sandwiches and even breakfast are some of the many options. During the initial visit on opening day, customers were welcomed by vivid and friendly staff members. Excitement grew and joy was sensed from the front to the very end of the line. Prepared for the busy and hectic day, the Chick-Fil-A team ensured no customer left unsatisfied and created many return customers with their efficient and memorable customer service. Although the line was out the door and the drive through looped around the shopping center, wait times didn’t exceed 15 minutes from the time in line to getting the food itself. There were

dedicated members in the roles of passing out menus, taking orders with tablets, cashiers and servers. One of the first things anybody notices when they go out for food is service. From someone who understands the customer service industry, Chick-Fil-A offers an unbeatable service team. With high attentiveness, positive attitudes and efficient procedures it left no room for unhappy customers. Customer service was above and beyond perfection. After receiving the menu for the first time with no prior recommendations, it was difficult to go and just order a single item. The final decision made was to order the Chick-Fil-A sandwich meal (upgraded to large for the increased fry quantity and drink size) and the spicy deluxe chicken sandwich entree. It was surprising that the price came to a total of $12.20 (after tax). Like any addiction, all it takes is one time to get hooked. A day went by and a craving began. Second day went by, the craving continued. On the third day, it

appeared that the craving needed to be extinguished. On the second visit, an urge to try different items on the menu arose. Determined to try new things, the tenders and nuggets were the ones to catch the eye. Throwing out all New Year’s resolutions to be healthy, an order of the Spicy Chicken Deluxe sandwich was ordered to become the “cherry on top”. The most popular item by observation seemed to be the Chick-Fil-A sandwich. In between two buns lied a handbreaded chicken breast and dill pickles. Simple but it works, and it works very well. Of all the items that were ordered within the two visits, the one that stood out the most was the spicy chicken deluxe, highly recommended. Overall food quality, taste and freshness gets a Is it worth the hype? Yes. Is it worth the drive? Really depends if you’re willing to drive 30-50 minutes depending on traffic. Is it worth the price? It’s a steal. Rating: 5/5

Cheap date ideas can still bring happiness By: Kady Mckenzie Going on dates can be a very hard thing to do with no money but there are ways to have fun on a budget. 1. Picnics in the park. It takes little to no money to scrounge up some food and walk down to your nearest park and just hangout. Sandwiches, fruit, chips, popcorn and dollar iced teas aren’t expensive and they always taste good. Parks are always a nice place to relax for free. Combine all of that with a special someone and it’ll make for a nice date. 2. Movie night at home. Already owning a good movie and just inviting someone over would be pretty nice date. Buying cheap dollar store candy and watching a

Dollar movie theater. A movie date is a classic and Tropicana Cinema theater has movies for only a dollar on Tuesdays, which would be a steal. If concession prices are too much, sneaking in dollar store candy

is always an easy option. 4. Hiking. If the outdoors are appealing, hiking would be a good option. It’s free and can be fun to get outside of the house. Bringing food like granola bars and sandwiches and water, you could also have a little picnic while there. 5. Dinner at home. Making, or attempting to make dinner, can be a very

nice thought. A homemade dinner, even if it’s not that good, can make someone’s day. Another fun thing to do would be to make it together. All the expense would be is buying the food to make it. There’s plenty of cheap dinner options, spaghtti, sandwiches and really anything is cheap if it’s for just two people. 6. Bowling. Most bowling alleys are fairly cheap and it could be fun night just hanging out. Making it a group or double date would also be fun. Dates don’t always have to be expensive restaurants or a fancy place. If it’s a date with the right person, it can anywhere and it’ll still be fun. Cheap places and ideas don’t automatically mean bad.

A mix of new and classics: Bonanza’s mens volleyball team The upcoming season is filled with experience, newcomers By: Iris Thaoxaochay New year. New season. New team. The volleyball team welcomed many newcomers and are focusing on training them to be the greatest players they can be. The volleyball team is full of fresh faces this year. Much of the team consisted of seniors last year, but this returning year is full of new freshman and sophomore Bengals. “This years volleyball team is young and right now we’re focusing on small goals for them to achieve,” senior Paolo Luchs said. The coaches themselves are paying close attention to this new team. “We lost a lot of seniors last year, so the coaches are kind of restarting and building up,” junior James Mead said. Other members of the team agree that the most important thing to do is make sure the new members understand what they are

24

doing. “The coaches are working back on the basics, trying to teach everything to everyone again, and just making sure everyone gets their job and what they need to do,” Luchs said. While a new team might sound like a recipe for disaster, the coaches preparations and careful attention can make sure the team is ready for the season. The returning athletes are excited to get back and play with the new team. “I’m excited to start fresh

and start with a new team,” Mead said. Many of the returners from last year are ready to take up the challenge and help lead the team, as well as making sure they are prepared for their position. The team is doing great when it comes to preparing the newcomers, but also making sure they are the best they can be. Along with helping the newcomers, the returners are focusing on their own goals. “I want to do better and get better at my diving,” sophomore Brady Keeran said. Like Keeran, Mead also strives to excel in his position.

With the returners excited to help the newcomers, the coaches bent on retraining the new team and everyone eager to play their part on the team.

“My personal goal is to be a good setter to get points for the team,” Mead said. “[I’m excited to] just basically play and get hyped up like I did last year,” Keeran said. Everyone is excited to get back into the sport and play, even if it is a new team. “[I’m excited to] just be with the team again and being able to play with them because last year was really fun,” Luchs said. With the returners excited to help the newcomers, the coaches bent on retraining the new team and everyone eager to play their part on the team, it looks like it could be a great year for the Bonanza Bengals volleyball team. This could be an exciting year for the team, so come out to watch them. “I just encourage them to come out and it’s super fun to watch,” Mead said.

The thrill of competition A view into what it means to do track and field Photo courtesy of Vimeo

By: Cameron Gaddi The Bonanza track team, holder of various first place awards and legions of star athletes. The Bonanza track team is led by multiple coaches of the various track and field events that take place. Coach Chad Robertus is in charge of the Jumpers, Coach Bruce Eubank is in charge of the distance runners, Coach Doreen Farmer for hurdles, Coach Chelsea Nuttal for sprints, Coach Tim Leighton for Pole vaults, and Coach Elizabeth Rice for throwers. The team is currently undergoing Intramurals which according to Coach Robertus is “a way to warm up for track season.” The “warm ups” are pre practice work outs done by the athletes to loosen muscles and get ready for the actual practice that commence after the warm up. These workouts consist of various exercises such as various skips listed in letters such as “A,” “B.” The team also do daily eight hundred meter runs

along with various stretches like “arm circles,” “hurdlers,” “toe touches,” and various others. The team also uses these workouts as what they call a “cooldown.” An after track practice workout. The Daily routine of students attending the intramurals consist of a weekly schedule of distance runs, Sprints, and plyometrics which is a type of exercise which runners use maximum muscle force in short periods of time. Allan Epperson a member of the distance team, agreed to do an interview on his opinions and goals on the team. The events Epperson participates in include: the mile run, the two mile run, and the four by eight relay. Epperson is a veteran at Track and field, with multiple years under his belt. The difficulty in persevering every day in this strenuous activity must be very difficult, Epperson says his secret is constant persistence every day with plenty of stretching and the mindset to never give up

no matter how painful it is. Epperson claims the biggest obstacle he has to face is soreness, particularly in the leg region. Epperson says his main goal is to beat his previous personal best and get a time of five minutes and twenty five seconds on the mile or a thousand six hundred meters. Epperson, like all track and field members has a lot of pressure on his shoulders and says that he motivates himself by thinking competively and getting pumped. Zenaya Webb, a member of the sprinters and rising star on the Bonanza team, gave insight on what she does for track. Webb says that her overall goal for the season is to “get faster and be able to run for an extended period of time through endurance training, “says Webb. Webb warms with “ a two lap jog then straight to sprint drills, which break down the basic form of sprinting.” Being a star player Webb does four events: the one hundred meter, two hundred meter dash-

es, and four by one and two hundred relays. Competing at a high level is nervewracking so Webb focuses on the rhythm of the run which allows her to achieve her goal. Webb claims her greatest achievement is when she gave confidence to others to try their absolute hardest even if they are fast or slow. Webb also is hindered by only one true obstacle, the pressure. Webb claims that she feels an extreme amount of pressure, and the way she gets over it and perseveres is to keep a positive stance on everything. The Bonanza track team is full of wonderful and exiting personalities all striving for the best. No matter what obstacles come their way they always persevere like they were taught to and face competition with confidence. Any challenge the team undertakes will be completed with extreme determination and ruthless efficiency. By the time the season ends every team will hear the Bengal roar.

New coach, fresh start for softball By: Angelica Velazquez and Deja Calicuitt Strike one. Strike two. Strike three. Out. That’s what softball is all about. Some girls play softball just to get out of P.E their second year, but these girls play because they love the sport. “I love softball, I’ve been playing it since I was little,” sophomore, Jennette Storms said. With the new softball coach, Toni Del Toro, they are hoping they do better this year. Del Toro helps players by making them work hard to get them ready for tryouts. Hopefully they have gotten better with practice and new players come in to help them win more often this year. Storms has been a part of the team since last year when she was a freshman. She plays right outfield because she works best at that position and also because last year’s coach assigned her to that position. She was captain on the JV team last year, because she worked her very best to meet the team’s expectations. The game was something fun for the team, a stress reliever, and once they are on the field all of the problems go away. Some ways for new players to get better at softball is to practice and to go to batting cages. Storms helps out the team by using her skills, such as being able to catch a lot of pop flies and staying focused to keep the team going. Storms wanted this to be her sport for the rest of her high school years, but she isn’t interested in playing softball

Returning players and new girls practice together at intermurals.

“If the girls on the team can support each other and stay positive throughout the season, they will be successful.” - Toni Del Toro, coach in college because she is looking into fire science. Leilani Rios was great help last year because of her strong arm. She is also very consistent in running. Rios always had an interest in softball. She used to play with

her brother all the time when she was a kid. “It feels good being active, it’s also something to do after school,” Rios said. Rios has hope they will win more than one game this year because they have practiced more and there is new girls coming in to try out. The one thing to do to become a better softball player is practice. “You really have to put your mind into it,” Rios said. Rios also thinks they will do better this year because the new coach makes them work together most of the time and teamwork is key. It’s also good that the team gets along pretty well for the most part. “Team turns into family,” Rios said. Rios played third base last year. She is hoping to play outfield this year. She is planning on going to college and hopefully to get a scholarship for softball. The team really likes this

year’s new coach. Del Toro has been coaching for the last 11 years. She spent nine years at Durango High School and coached last year at College of Southern Nevada. She has always believed that teamwork is the key to success. “If the girls on the team can support each other and stay positive throughout the season, they will be successful,” Del Toro said. When the season starts Del Toro and the staff will be figuring out what skills they need to improve on and what plays they need to execute in order to become better. Bonanza High school is excited to see the new upcoming softball team. These girls have been putting in better effort, thanks to their new coach for helping them find their drive.

Take a dive with the swim team Swimmers are preparing for what may be their best season yet

By: Iris Thaoxaochay Ready? Get set. Go. The swim season approaches and the team is already busy preparing for what’s going to be a phenomenal season. 2017 might just be the best year yet for the swim team with all their preparations and focused attitudes. “They’re very enthusiastic and we’re already in intramurals. We’re working out hard doing dry land exercises and we’ll be ready to get in the water,” coach Michael Harrison said. The swimmers are excited to jump in the water and get the season going as well. Intramurals started November this year and it looks like it’s really helping the Bonanza swim team. “We started practices earlier, so we started working on our cardio and muscles that we’ll use during the season,” sopho-

2017 might just be the best year yet for the swim team with all their preparations and focused attitudes. more Rachel Perez Soto said. By popular request of last year’s swim team, intramurals started earlier so the athletes can really build up their cardio, and it seems as if it is helping. Coaches and athletes individually are focusing on their own goals. Of course they all want to succeed as a team, but their personal goals will drive them that much further. “Last year we had nine students go to regionals,” Harrison said. “We might get maybe fourteen or fifteen to regionals and I want at least two or three of them to place at regionals and maybe go to state.”

Eye of the Tiger

The swimmers themselves have also made it a personal goal to make it to regionals and beat their record times. “I want to go to regionals, although I did that last year, so I mean hopefully I can go again and do it individually,” senior Caleb Ghrist said. Both experienced and new coaches are involved in this years season and this brings a lot of good things to the table. “Harrison is from last year, so I know that he has good experience and he’s going to do a lot of good with the team,” Ghrist said. “Patske, she’s new but I think she knows what she’s

doing in terms of like conditioning and working out.” With all this work and preparation the swim team is putting in it would be foolish to not go to their meets and support them. “You know what? If you’ve never been to a swim meet, it’s exciting,” Coach Harrison said. “There’s races constantly and I mean there’s somebody to root for all the time.” It’s a way to connect with your school and be more involved. If the meets are too far or maybe too long, come to just a few and support fellow Bonanza students, even if that means staying for only a few races. With their eyes on the goal and their plan to work toward that success the team will have a stellar season, so go watch and support the Bonanza swim team.
