The Department of Ophthalmology continues to grow its reputation. Our unique programs, recruitment of top talent, collaboration, innovation, and commitment to care for all are pillars of our success. 2025 was a remarkable year of growth, innovation, and commitment to the science and community of vision care. $2.1M Grant to Support Vision Restoration Initiative

The University of Pittsburgh and the Eye & Ear Foundation of Pittsburgh have received a $2,182,900 multiyear grant from the Gilbert Family Foundation to support the organization’s Vision Restoration Initiative (VRI), which aims to prevent blindness caused by mutations in the neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) gene. The award is part of a broader, multidisciplinary initiative by the Gilbert Family Foundation to advance transformative vision research and foster collaboration among 15 leading research centers.

We seek nominations for individuals who have made extraordinary contributions to the field of Ophthalmology. Established in 2001, the Albert C. Muse Prize recognizes the world’s leaders in the fields of Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology. Alternating between these two fields each year, this prestigious honor celebrates individuals who have made significant advancements in research and patient care within these two specialties.

The Eye & Ear Foundation of Pittsburgh, an independent 501(c)(3) organization, was founded in 1985 to foster philanthropic support for the Departments of Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh. The goal is to keep moving forward, expanding EEF’s support network, and helping the Departments achieve unparalleled distinction in research, education, outreach, and patient care.
