MESSAGE FROM THE CEO Dear Friends and Supporters, As we close Fiscal Year 2026, I am filled with gratitude for all that we have accomplished together. This has been a year of scientific progress, compassionate care, and meaningful advancement across vision, hearing, communication health, and head and neck surgery—reflecting our renewed commitment to making world-class care and discovery available to more people here in Pittsburgh and far beyond. Across the Department of Ophthalmology and the UPMC Vision Institute, our partners continued to advance work that is changing what is possible for patients with blinding diseases. From the promise of the PRIMA retinal implant for people with advanced age-related macular degeneration, to the continued momentum of optic nerve regeneration research at the Louis J. Fox Center for Vision Restoration, to new models of care for patients who face barriers to access, the past year demonstrated the power of bringing discovery, clinical excellence, and philanthropy together. In the Department of Otolaryngology–Head & Neck Surgery, we saw the same spirit of innovation and service. The Pittsburgh Hearing Institute continued to build momentum as a transformative center for hearing and balance care, while the Communication Van expanded access to hearing, speech, language, and voice services in neighborhoods throughout the region. Researchers and clinicians also pressed forward in areas ranging from auditory perception and learning to gene therapy, cochlear implantation, cranial base surgery, and head and neck cancer care. One of the defining stories of FY26 was the way our community responded when critical research support was threatened. The creation of the Al Muse Recovery Fund honored the legacy of one of the Eye & Ear Foundation’s founding leaders while helping sustain promising work in both Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery. At a moment when federal funding uncertainty placed important projects at risk, our Board and donors stepped forward to protect discovery and preserve hope for patients and families. We also deepened our commitment to access and outreach. Community Vision Day, support kit initiatives for unhoused patients, mobile hearing care, patient navigation, and practical tools such as clEARdashboard all reflect a simple but powerful belief: world-class care should reach people where they are. These efforts remind us that innovation is not only measured in laboratories or operating rooms, but also in the lives touched when care becomes easier to find, understand, and receive. Throughout the year, we shared these stories through Sight + Sound, The Scoop, Our Vision for the Future, OTOVATION, and our digital channels. Month after month, those stories highlighted remarkable faculty, trainees, staff, patients, donors, and partners whose work is moving Pitt Ophthalmology and Pitt Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery forward. They also made clear that the Eye & Ear Foundation’s role is both enduring and essential: to connect generosity with the people and ideas that can change lives. As we look ahead, I do so with great confidence—not because the challenges before us are small, but because the commitment of this community is so strong. Your support accelerates discovery, strengthens care, trains the next generation of clinicians and scientists, and extends help to patients who might otherwise be left behind. With heartfelt thanks, Lawton Snyder Chief Executive Officer, The Eye & Ear Foundation 3

T H E D E PA R T M E N T O F O T O L A R Y N G O LO G Y HEAD & NECK SURGERY

GROWTH, DISCOVERY, AND PARTNERSHIP Dear Friends and Supporters, Fiscal Year 2026 was a defining year for the Department of Otolaryngology–Head & Neck Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh. With 60 full-time faculty, 40 clinicians, 20 researchers, 25 residents, and seven fellows across seven clinical divisions and multiple sites, we grew clinical volume, deepened research impact, and advanced two signature institutes that will shape our next decade. That progress rests on partnerships with UPMC, Hillman Cancer Center, and the Eye & Ear Foundation, as well as on the generosity of donors.

Clinical Growth and Institute Momentum

Clinical volume has risen significantly over the last four years, while we have maintained strong outcomes and improved efficiency across all of our clinical divisions. New and expanded sites in Washington County, Jamestown, Sewickley, and Wexford bring subspecialty care closer to patients across western Pennsylvania, with further reach into central Pennsylvania on the horizon. Two flagship efforts define our institutional vision. The Institute for Head and Neck Surgery is consolidating high-volume oncology care, survivorship, and surgeon-led trials into a premier destination in partnership with Hillman and EEF. The Pittsburgh Hearing Institute regained major momentum with a $20 million commitment from the dean of the School of Medicine, contingent on a foundation match, to build research infrastructure and clinical capacity that colocate scientists and clinicians. Advancing both institutes remains our highest priority for the year ahead. 4

Research, Innovation, and Education

We remain among the nation’s top NIH-funded otolaryngology programs, ranking second nationally in the 2024 Blue Ridge standings, with new R01s, VA career development awards, and a U01 added to the portfolio, even as the federal environment has tightened. Foundation and alumni support helped keep discovery moving when federal dollars alone were not enough. In head and neck oncology, our team advanced liquid biopsy science, including the use of surgical drain fluid as a proximal bioanalyte for molecular residual disease in HPV-positive and HPV-negative disease—work that has drawn multicenter interest and new NIH support for preanalytical development. Hearing science progressed toward therapy: Christopher Cunningham, PhD, and colleagues advanced cell type–specific gene therapy for TOMT-linked hearing loss; with Thanos Tzounopoulos, PhD, and me, that platform helped launch Echogenesis Therapeutics. CREATES continues to grow inventorfounders through sponsorship of an innovation fellowship now available to the entire School of Medicine. Mixed-reality tools moved closer to routine surgical use, and the Center for Balance Disorders continued its national leadership in vestibular diagnostics and DoD-linked rehabilitation research. We recruited surgeon-scientists and fellowship-trained surgeons who lead programs across the United States, including Steve Chinn, MD; Lauren Gardner, MD; and Gabriella Heslop, MD. We have also pioneered new residency academic tracks, from surgeon-scientist and entrepreneurship to community outreach and quality, giving our residents opportunities to develop their academic portfolios alongside their clinical and surgical skills. Additionally, our courses in microvascular reconstruction, facial nerve surgery, skull base surgery, and head and neck cancer survivorship have attracted national and international audiences, further elevating our Department’s standing as a leader in otolaryngology–head and neck surgery.

Gratitude to Our Donors

None of this is possible without the Eye & Ear Foundation, our alumni base, and every donor who chooses hearing, head and neck cancer, balance, and surgical innovation as philanthropic priorities. Your gifts seed laboratories, match public investment in the Hearing Institute, strengthen head and neck and survivorship programs, train residents and fellows, and help us recruit faculty who could practice anywhere. On behalf of our entire faculty, thank you.

T H E D E PA R T M E N T O F O P H T H A L M O LO G Y

A YEAR OF PROGRESS IN VISION SCIENCE AND CARE Dear Friends and Supporters, Over the past year, the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Pittsburgh and the UPMC Vision Institute advanced our core mission: preserving and restoring sight, training clinicians and scientists, and expanding access to high-quality eye care. Landmark trial results, first-in-region procedures, international honors, strong research funding, and growing community programs reflect the work of our faculty, trainees, staff, and partners, as well as the sustained generosity of Eye & Ear Foundation donors.

Research and Clinical Advances

In October 2025, the international trial of the PRIMA wireless subretinal implant was published in the New England Journal of Medicine. Co-led by Daniel Palanker, PhD (Stanford), Frank Holz, MD (University of Bonn) and myself, the study showed restoration of central vision in patients with geographic atrophy due to agerelated macular degeneration. Among those who completed 12 months of follow-up, 81 percent achieved clinically meaningful gains in visual acuity; on average, participants improved about five lines on a standard eye chart when using the device. UPMC was the first U.S. center to implant PRIMA, led by Joseph Martel, MD. The device has now been granted the CE mark and will be marketed in Europe first. At the Vision Institute, Ian Conner, MD, PhD, performed Western Pennsylvania’s first artificial iris implantation, with Boris Rosin, MD, PhD, and colleagues restoring useful vision after severe ocular trauma. 6

In March 2026, Anthony St. Leger, PhD, and colleagues reported in Cell Reports a proof-of-concept “living eye drop,” an ocular surface microbe engineered to deliver an anti-inflammatory therapeutic to speed corneal healing, work supported in part by the Foundation. In September 2025, Netramind Innovations, a Department spinout founded by Jay Chhablani, MD; Kiran Kumar Vupparaboina, PhD; Sandeep Bollepalli, PhD; and me, received a Bruce and Barbara Wiegand Entrepreneurial Research Award for AI-powered imaging tools aimed at AMD and diabetic retinopathy. The company has validated reliable predictive models of disease to inform clinical decisions. Blue Ridge rankings continue to place our Department among the top NIH-funded ophthalmology programs nationally; fiscal year 2025 NIH support exceeded $15.7 million. We have further diversified our funding sources with the help of the EEF.

Education, Outreach, and Honors

Residents, fellows, and students train in a high-volume academic setting where teaching and discovery reinforce each other. Community Ophthalmology & Remote Access Programs expanded Eyes on Wheels (formerly Guerilla Eye Service) across the region. In December 2025, our inaugural Community Vision Day at the Vision Institute served 135 patients with about 80 volunteers; nearly half were uninsured and most were new to our system. This event is now occurring quarterly, thanks to the support of our donors and the leadership of UPMC. Along with Mission of Mercy partnerships and patient navigation, we are committed to ensuring that financial barriers do not preclude vision care. Deep Dhaliwal, MD, LAc, is now the President of the international Cornea Society. Vishal Jhanji, MD, FRCS (Glasgow), FRCOphth, FARVO, has been appointed Editor-in-Chief of Cornea, the leading specialty journal, and Jay Chhablani, MD, has been inducted into the Retina Hall of Fame. I was honored to receive the 2026 ARVO Proctor Medal and deliver the Proctor Lecture in Denver during the annual meeting of ARVO, the leading Vision Research Organization, and to receive the Distinguished Innovation Award from Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts Eye and Ear in June 2026. Recognition by the Wolf Prize in Medicine, shared with Botond Roska, MD, PhD, for optogenetic vision restoration, further underscored Pittsburgh’s global role.

A major milestone occurred in the recognition of our growth (over 300%) and innovative care. U.S. News & World Report placed our program at No. 12 in its global rankings and rated it as Excellent. Gratitude to Our Donors

These advances rest on partnership among the University of Pittsburgh, UPMC, and the Eye & Ear Foundation. Donor support seeds laboratories before federal awards arrive, equips cores, funds pilots and translation, staffs community programs, and helps us recruit investigators who could work anywhere. We need to extend and amplify our efforts as the needs and the opportunities are unprecedented. On behalf of our faculty, I thank our Institutions, the Foundation Board, the Science & Solutions Society (planned gifts), foundations and community supporters, and every annual donor who invests in vision research, education, and outreach. Your generosity conditions the initial successes that multiply institutional and federal investment; it paves the way towards breakthroughs and extends care into communities too often left out.

BROTHER’S BROTHER VOLUNTEER DAY The EEF team spent time volunteering at Brother’s Brother Foundation assembling hygiene kits that will support individuals and families affected by crises around the world and in our local communities. It was a meaningful opportunity to come together, give back, and help provide essential supplies to those in need, especially with an organization so instrumental to our own. Brother’s Brother partners with EEF for the ACT program (Advancing Care Together), which secures ongoing funding for community care in ophthalmology and otolaryngology. Brother’s Brother has donated vans for ophthalmology (eyeVan) and otolaryngology outreach (Communication Van), and is sending supplies to Gorongosa, where the Department of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery is helping improve awareness of otitis media and addressing unmet needs. We are grateful to the Brother’s Brother Foundation for the important work they do and for allowing us to be part of their mission to improve lives through humanitarian aid.
