Dear Friends and Supporters,
As we conclude another successful fiscal year, I am thrilled to share some exciting updates and express our deepest gratitude for your unwavering support.
First and foremost, I am delighted to report that the New Horizons for Care Campaign, launched by the Eye & Ear Foundation in 2016 with a goal of reaching $80 million by the end of 2023, has been a tremendous success. Thanks to your generosity, we have surpassed this ambitious goal in just seven short years. Your contributions have made a significant impact on how we hear, see, and live.
Looking ahead, the Departments of Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology at the University of Pittsburgh have set clear priorities. The Department of Ophthalmology is focused on expanding its faculty to establish the most productive program in research and development for new therapeutic and technological advancements in vision care. Similarly, the Department of Otolaryngology aims to achieve excellence in hearing care with plans to create a new Hearing Institute, which will be housed alongside the Vision Institute in the Mercy Pavilion. Additionally, the Head and Neck Cancer Division is collaborating with the Hillman Cancer Institute to develop a leading program for advancing treatment and care.
Our promise is to continue working to improve care for the future and to keep you informed of our progress through the Sight + Sound newsletter, (our digital newsletters): the Scoop on Sight + Sound and the Sights + Sounds of Our Community, webinars, and blogs. There is no better way to demonstrate our appreciation for your support than by providing you with these updates. Thank you so very much for supporting the Eye & Ear Foundation.

It is a tremendous privilege to share the work of the Department of Otolaryngology over the last year, and to highlight the remarkable advances that we have made in our fight against head and neck cancer, hearing loss, and other related otolaryngologic conditions. This has been a year of continued clinical and research growth for the Department. I am proud to say that with the support of the Eye & Ear Foundation we have successfully recruited some of the best surgeons and scientists from across the United States to Pittsburgh. Our recruitment reflects key priorities for the Department, including providing world-class clinical care and conducting groundbreaking translational research. The success of the Department is being recognized. This year, we had a significant improvement in our US News and World Report rankings, from #44 to #19 in the nation. Some highlights from the past year include:
• Design and planning for the new Pittsburgh Hearing Institute at the UPMC Mercy Pavilion is well underway! With insights from clinicians and researchers, we have designed a unique center where surgeons, audiologists, and researchers work side-by side to discover the next generation of treatments for hearing loss and tinnitus. We are incredibly grateful to the Eye & Ear Foundation and our donors for their continuing efforts to help make the Pittsburgh Hearing Institute a reality.
• This Fall, we welcomed several new faculty to further establish the University of Pittsburgh as an international leader in the treatment and research of hearing loss. Peter Santa Maria, MD, PhD, our new chief of Neurotology and Vice Chair for Translational Research, has already been busy in the operating room and the clinic. His laboratory, focused on understanding hearing loss in otitis media, has successfully transitioned from Stanford to Pittsburgh. We look forward to many new discoveries. We also welcomed Gregory Basura MD PhD and Adele Moatti PhD to the team. Dr. Basura is an experienced neurotologist and scientist who runs a research program focused on cognitive pathways in hearing loss and tinnitus. Dr. Moatti joins us from UNC and North Carolina State. Her laboratory explores drug delivery methods for the inner ear using nanoparticles and extracellular vesicles.
• Under the leadership of Dr. Matthew Spector, MD, our head and neck surgical oncology and microvascular reconstructive surgery program has ascended to one of the busiest and best in the United States. Along with Marci Nilsen, PhD, RN and with support from the Eye & Ear Foundation, we are embarking on a new program to measure and manage functional outcomes in patients undergoing complex head and neck surgery and reconstruction. Our 2025-2026 head and neck surgical oncology fellowship match reflects the caliber of the program and our standing in the field. In July 2025, we will welcome a class of fellows from Stanford University, Mayo Clinic, and the University of Minnesota to the Department.
• In September, we welcomed Chloe Santa Maria, MBBS, MPH to Pittsburgh. Having just completed a highly competitive laryngology fellowship in Los Angeles, she brings innovative new techniques to our laryngology division. As an expert in the management of the professional voice, she is developing an exciting collaboration on improving vocal health with members of the Pittsburgh performing arts community.
• We have revitalized the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery Pittsburgh CREATES program. With support from the Eye & Ear Foundation and the University of Pittsburgh Innovation Institute, we hired Mohit Singhala, PhD as executive director of CREATES. Dr. Singhala is a robotic engineer from Johns Hopkins and a former Stanford Biodesign Fellow who will help establish CREATES as a center for surgical innovation and entrepreneurship.
• Our residency program continues to thrive, and we welcomed an exceptional class of interns from the University of Pittsburgh (x2), the University of Pennsylvania, Washington University School of Medicine, and UT Southwestern. This year, the residency program was ranked #13 in the United States by Doximity.
The Eye & Ear Foundation of Pittsburgh is the engine that drives our clinical and research success in the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. The work of the Department is far from over as we take on even bigger challenges to improve the lives of patients facing head and neck cancer, hearing loss, tinnitus, any many other conditions that severely impact quality of life. We are very grateful to our friends and donors in Pittsburgh and across the United States for their continued support and look forward to another exciting year of discovery ahead.

A landmark year.
Not only did we move into our new beautiful UPMC Vision Institute at Mercy Pavilion, but as we had hoped, we have been treating fast-increasing numbers of patients at all our sites, providing cutting-edge care to all. The campaign launched by the Eye & Ear Foundation shortly after I joined Pitt and UPMC has met all its objectives and beyond.
This is an excellent time to celebrate what we have achieved thanks to the unprecedented support of the Eye & Ear Foundation team, board and donors, the local Philanthropies working synergistically with our Institutions, the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, and the Medical Center.
Without you, none of the following would have happened:
• We grew the Fox Center for Optic Nerve Regeneration into one of the strongest in the world, leveraging existing support into major funding and recruiting leading talent.
• We are bringing our corneal stem cell program, the brainchild of the late Jim Funderburgh, to the clinical stage.
• We have preserved and expanded our ocular infections and immunity expertise around the Campbell Laboratory.
• We established a platform assembling the most advanced high-resolution imaging of all eye structures, with multidisciplinary expertise in optics, engineering, artificial intelligence, biomarkers for the progression of genetic, inflammatory, and genetic diseases,
• We launched the most innovative vision restoration programs, including prosthetic vision, cortical stimulation, gene therapy, and optogenetics, and performed some first-in-human trials.
• We are developing novel patient-centered methods to assess the impact of visual impairment in real life and the transformative benefit of vision restoration, based on the quantification of daily activities in the StreetLab laboratory, the driving simulator, and incorporating the patient voice using narrative research methods,
• We provide fully integrated vision rehabilitation with leading, caring experts using our novel life-skills apartment, all novel technologies, including augmented reality,
• We are assessing and improving constantly the quality of care, using constant monitoring of multiple metrics and a digital twin approach
• We offer the most advanced surgeries, including multidisciplinary, using high resolution, three-dimensional imaging for retinal surgery, novel lasers for cataract and refractive surgeries, novel drainage systems for glaucoma,
• We are ensuring access to care is possible for all, continuing and expanding our community initiatives such as the Guerilla Eye Service, Street Medicine, the EyeVan offered by the Brother’s Brother Foundation, and the constant commitment of our patient advocate. In parallel, we are analyzing the impact of social determinants of health and developing solutions to improve the follow-up of patients affected with complex, chronic conditions.
• At the E. Ron Salvitti, MD surgical training laboratory, we are training the current and next generations of surgeons in the most advanced techniques.
• For the past three years, we have offered community ophthalmology technician training programs and jobs. We have also trained Hillman Scholars from underserved communities to conduct scientific projects, and several of them have successfully applied to elite College Programs.
• In its second year, our Gene Therapy Bootcamp has exposed a wide range of individuals to the most advanced methods, contributing to the building of a workforce in our region.
These are only some examples of the initiatives made possible by your support. This also demonstrated that the investment in our teams was leveraged and amplified multiple times.
Are we done now?
You know that the answer is no! These programs must continue and unfold. As long as people continue to be affected by blinding conditions, we must extend our efforts and launch new initiatives. Among many examples, we need to design and run innovative clinical trials for untreatable conditions, e.g., ultra-rare gene defects, advanced glaucoma, retinal degenerations, optic nerve trauma, and tumors, and ensure that our city is a place where all can benefit from such breakthroughs.
Thank you for your continued partnership.
