Message from the Chair

Dear Alumni and Friends,

On behalf of the Department of Otolaryngology, I want to wish you all a belated Happy New Year as we head into what will surely be an exciting 2023 for our Department. Since my appointment as Chair last summer I have enjoyed getting to know many of you, and hope that I will get an opportunity to meet more of you in the coming year. This Department, more so than many others around the country, is much like a family. I couldn’t be more excited to be part of it!

While I look forward to the numerous occasions to interact with all of you in person in the coming year, I’m appreciative of the opportunity to keep you informed of happenings within the Department through our alumni newsletter. In this issue, you’ll meet some of our new faculty members that have already joined or will be joining our Department. You will also get a chance to see the incredible work that our faculty have been doing over the past year, as you get a summary of some of the projects we have received grants for, as well as the over 150 publications our faculty were part of. In particular, the work of Dr. Angela Mazul is the focus of our research spotlight, and we’re so thankful that Dr. Mazul has joined our Department. I am excited to let you know that our Department is now ranked 2nd in the nation in NIH funding for Otolaryngology. We continue to invest in our research infrastructure and hire new, innovative faculty that are sure to elevate us even further. We’re also excited for our alumni spotlight, highlighting the career of Dr. Bert O’Malley. Dr. O’Malley is a surgeon, teacher, and innovator in our field who remains a loyal friend to the Department long after his fellowship here in Pittsburgh.

Alumni from the Department of Otolaryngology at the University of Pittsburgh have long held a prestigious reputation in our field, and I’m honored to now be working with all of you to maintain and enhance that legacy. Our doors are always open to welcome back our alumni from all around the world, and I hope to see many of you at our upcoming Three Rivers Otolaryngology Update on March 23-24. If you should ever need anything from me, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

All of my best,

José Zevallos, MD, MPH, FACS

Professor, The Eugene N. Myers, MD Chair Department of Otolaryngology

The University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine
