I cannot tell you what a thrill it is to serve as CEO of the Eye & Ear Foundation. At EEF, we have an outstanding Board of Directors and team of professionals who all share my passion for our mission. I also have the privilege of working with the world’s top clinicians and scientists in the fields of ophthalmology and otolaryngology right here at the University of Pittsburgh. While we are sad to see Dr. Jonas Johnson step down as Otolaryngology Department Chair, we look forward to continuing our work with him on Head & Neck Cancer Survivorship. And we welcome Dr. José Zevallos, MD, MPH, FACS, who comes to us from Washington University School of Medicine, where he was Chief of Head and Neck Surgical Oncology and Director of the Head and Neck Surgical Oncology Fellowship Program. We are honored to have him lead us into a new era. As you noticed in previous annual reports, the Foundation is currently in a campaign; we have raised over $62 million towards our $80 million goal. While this is a great accomplishment, what is more important is that this funding and Campaign will help people with vision loss, hearing loss, voice disorders, balance disorders, or cancers of the head and neck. These resources mean enjoying a grandchild’s baseball game, hearing and seeing the wonders of nature, and overall improved quality of life. Advancing the research is the purpose of our New Horizon for Care Campaign.

Indeed, thank you to everyone who has helped us get to where we are today. In what seems like uncertain financial times, we have continued to witness people’s generosity at work, and we are truly grateful. Thank you to the people listed in this annual report and to all who support the Eye & Ear Foundation in other ways. We promise to continue to keep you informed of the progress of the research we support through the Sight + Sound newsletter, Sight + Sound blog, the Scoop on Sight + Sound, the Sights + Sounds of Our Community, our webinar series Sight + Sound Bites, and our website. However, if you would like to learn more from any of our EEF team members, you are welcome to reach out to us at any time.

Lawton Snyder Chief Executive Officer Eye & Ear Foundation

WORLD-RENOWNED RESEARCH AND PATIENT CARE

My family and I arrived in Pittsburgh in 1979. It was an opportunity of a lifetime to begin my career as an Academic Otolaryngologist. We soon came to love Pittsburgh, and as you know, we never left. I have so enjoyed the ability to practice medicine in an environment rich in education and research.

Jonas T. Johnson, MD, FACS Distinguished Service Professor and Chairman Department of Otolaryngology The Dr. Eugene N. Myers Endowed Chair at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine

As the saying goes, “All good things must end.” As a student of biology, it became clear to me that a surgeon’s role must change. This, of course, was just another chance to change my own professional role. I am soon to retire from the University. I have requested an Emeritus position while I dedicate the next era of my life to better serving the population of people with cancer of the throat through the continued expansion of the Survivorship clinic. In this environment, we will continue to do research by asking patients and families how we can help. We will use this information to educate the world and advocate for change.

2

My professional career has allowed me many opportunities to re-engineer my activities to focus on efforts to change practice as research illuminated how we might better serve people. I have enjoyed national leadership roles. Eventually, I came to be Chairman of the Department of Otolaryngology. Working with both the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and the UPMC expanded the potential to learn and to teach.

Thank you!

This year is a very exciting transition time towards the opening of the new Vision Institute at UPMC Mercy Hospital Pavilion. The brand-new facility fully equipped with the most advanced technologies will epitomize the combination of technological advances and patient-centered approaches, providing the highest quality of care for everyone, adapted to their own needs and situations. In preparation for the opening of this new building, we have moved several research advances to clinical steps, such as prosthetic vision, optogenetics, stem cell research for corneal blindness, low vision using virtual reality, and gene therapy.

4

A dedicated art program is bringing to this site the talent and ideas of artists worldwide. It will be part of the patient experience. We also have continued to work on access to care for all through the partnership with Vision to Learn, Mission of Mercy (since 2021), the implementation of a very talented and dedicated patient advocate, and research programs on social determinants of health. Many of these programs are supported by the Eye & Ear Foundation. We shall continue to attract new talent from junior to confirmed, provided that the support enables them and us to reach our ultimate goal: protecting and restoring vision for as many as possible.

This upcoming year will be an exciting one as the Departments of Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology are undergoing momentous changes.

EEF plans to continue supporting Drs. Sahel and Zevallos with their objectives as we strive towards our campaign goal of $80 million. We will also be more present in the community with both Departments as they add community outreach clinics. Most importantly, we want to continue our mission to advance care for all.

Ophthalmology Chairs, José-Alain Sahel, MD’s priorities are to recruit clinician-scientists in the fields of glaucoma, neuroophthalmology, comprehensive ophthalmology, and ocular oncology, continue as well as expand access to care, including an all-day walk-in acute care clinic, and build an artificial intelligence model to help with diagnostics and treatment. He also hopes to make progress in a couple of key areas. The Center for Cortical Vision will soon start a clinical trial on a neuroprosthetic device, the first location in the U.S. to do so. Studies are also underway with the collaboration between the Fox Center and Wake Forest University testing the effectiveness of optic nerve regeneration. Research on rehabilitation and the development of strategies to provide coverage for the underserved are among the top priorities.

The June 30, 2022 Topping Off Ceremony for the Vision and Rehabilitation Institute at the UPMC Mercy Pavilion. Dr. José-Alain Sahel signing the the last beam and the beam being raised to the top of the Institute for installation.

LOOKING FORWARD TO 2023

The new Vision and Rehabilitation Institute at the UPMC Mercy Pavilion should be complete in April 2023. The ten-story tower will include 410,000 square feet of collaborative space for clinicians, researchers, educators, and industry partners, a 3D street lab to help patients with low vision learn how to navigate their surroundings, an innovative, fully mocked-up apartment to help patients relearn critical life skills, and state-of-the-art facilities.

On the Otolaryngology side, José P. Zevallos, MD, MPH, FACS, became the Eugene N. Myers, MD Chair on August 1, 2022, making him only the third Chairman of Otolaryngology in the University of Pittsburgh’s history. He is in great company, following Eugene N. Myers, MD, and Jonas T. Johnson, MD, Emeritus Chairs. Dr. Zevallos aspires to build innovation into everything the department does, whether that be surgical care, education, or research.

José P. Zevallos MD, MPH, FACS

The priority for the 2023 fiscal year is to continue to nurture and support the exceptional programs in surgical simulation, head and neck cancer survivorship, robotics, hearing sciences, and education that already exist within the Department. The ongoing support from the Eye & Ear Foundation has helped to make the University of Pittsburgh a national leader in these areas. Exciting new initiatives include the development of a head and neck cancer epidemiology and population sciences center within the Department. This Center will focus on three main areas: 1) primary and secondary prevention of head and neck cancer; 2) molecular determinants of cancer risk and outcomes; and 3) alleviating head and neck cancer disparities. An additional priority is to build clinical and translational research programs around the management of complex upper airway disorders.
