of our key performance indicators: increase in Revenue; increase in Gross Profit and an increase in EBIT. The leadership team and I are united in targeting a sustainable growth model for the business and things are certainly moving in the right direction.

Part of a Group I mentioned in my recent speech to the IMECHE’s Nuclear Ventilation audience about the importance of our relationship with Exyte Group.

We’re collaborating much more with our counterparts in Stuttgart and excitingly (pardon the pun) around the world. The financial backing of our big brother has always been one of our major selling points as a business. I’m pleased to say that this relationship can now be defined beyond that funding paradigm.

Foreword

I’m delighted to say that 2023 has been a very successful year for Exyte Hargreaves. When I came into the business I shared three broad priorities. These were to improve our order intake, grow our financial performance, and look after our people.

Thanks to our colleagues across the Group, we’re now playing our part in the development and delivery of global improvement initiatives.

These are designed to make our shared business better, and in doing so bring a greater service delivery for our clients. We’re also seeing increased project opportunities abroad, and are looking for similar chances to bring the benefits of Exyte’s talent pool to our UK portfolio.

Work Winning The efforts of our team to secure and win work has been remarkable.

It’s particularly pleasing to say that this story is reflected across each of our core sectors.

In Energy & Decommissioning we’ve been proud to play our part in the continued development of a buoyant UK nuclear portfolio. Hinkley Point C has been a particular highlight, we’re immensely looking forward to Sizewell C and our story at Sellafield is far from over. Each major nuclear facility in the UK has been delivered in partnership with Hargreaves and long may that continue.

Whilst we can’t speak to specifics in the Defence sector (for obvious reasons), I’m really proud of our work. Given the horrifying conflicts we’re seeing across the globe, it’s clear that our domestic security portfolio has never been more

We are an established 150-year old business with huge experience in the specialist HVAC field. But crucially, we’re also modern and expansive, welcoming new ideas to make our business better. I’d like to think we’ve proved this concept across the last 12 months by delivering our new brand, launching our Integrated Management System, investing in new technology for our Manufacturing facility, pioneering more Off Site Manufacturing and DfMA, and championing Digital

Innovation (and BIM).

Supporting and Rewarding our People We’ve had some fantastic news in the past couple of weeks with the release of 2023’s Exyte Engagement Survey results. Across the board our people are reporting that we are delivering for them by making Hargreaves a better place to come to work.

Safety is a critical part of this. Our Accident Frequency Rate and TRIR is Zero, testament both to our extremely high standards and the strong safety culture promoted by our major clients.

We’re also investing in our people.

There have been increased training opportunities, a wealth of promotions from within our talent pool and the recruitment of our 2023 apprentice intake via our Engineering Young Talent programme.

I must congratulate our teams too for their participation in numerous social value initiatives including Movember, bake sales, the Bury 10k and our incredible Ben Nevis climb.

I’m delighted to report the successful achievements of our financial targets in 2023. Huge credit is due to our Finance and Commercial teams for their work ethic and perseverance. This includes closing out some of our legacy projects in the Energy & Decommissioning sector to the tune of around £9 million.

£3.2M Gross Profit (10%)

We have also seen live project account growth of around £26.5 million. This is due to excellent project performance across the board from our design teams, to engineering, manufacturing and particularly our on site capability.

Internally, we have made incremental improvements to a number of our processes, which is aiding both productivity and efficiency.

We’ve forged closer relationships with our finance colleagues in Exyte Group and are routinely hitting financial reporting deadlines.

Better interaction with our colleagues across departments in Hargreaves is aiding in the resolution of legacy invoicing, cleaning our creditors ledger and processing 6,000 invoices with a value of £19.6 million.

Meet our Business Development Apprentice Beth Richards joined the Business Development team in October and she’s enjoying her role in building our future project pipeline.

My apprenticeship course is a 15-month virtual programme which consists of ten modules. I complete tasks after each tutorial which are collated to form my bid and proposal portfolio. Once I have completed the programme, I will be recognised by the Association of Proposal Management Professionals.

Q. What have you enjoyed working on so far?

I’ve been finding contracts online and creating tender submissions by analysing drawings and pricing accordingly depending on specification and scale of the project.

Q. What do you enjoy doing outside work?

In my free time I like to stay active and healthy.

I enjoy going to the gym and walking my dog.

My 10-month-old cockapoo Mabel is an extremely energetic puppy who can walk for miles.

‘Twas the night before BIM-mas 4.0 ‘Twas the night before Christmas, in years long ago.

When souls had ne’r heard, of Industry Four Point Oh. Now digitisation brings forth festive fusion.

As we tell you the tale, of industrial revolution.

Dry leaves on the floor as ice hugs the ground.

Darkness was falling, outside not a sound.

Downstairs I did step in a general direction.

Turning off all the lights in a darkened reception.

The first revolution seems just like just a dream.

The British built empires powered by steam.

But empires do fall and the world caught up fast.

And one big step forward would not be the last.

And then of a sudden, I heard on the roof.

Footsteps and pattering made by a hoof.

And out of the factory, mine eyes they did see.

Father Christmas arrived in full PPE.

The second time round was driven by science.

It was a technological ultra-reliance.

Mass production in turn made folk entrepreneurs.

When the twentieth century began to occur.

I asked ‘Was he lost?’, this jolly Saint Nick.

With toys to deliver, he had better be quick.

But Santa explained of his magic you know.

He’d stopped by for tales of Industry Four point Oh.

The sixties start swinging, and revolution strikes three.

Computers cease things done traditionally.

The Internet transforms matter into its code.

But ‘twas not the last time, it would need to reload.

His eyes – how they twinkled! Laughter it rings.

We spoke of an Internet made out of things.

Not built in a workshop, but stored in a cloud.

‘Where reindeer do roam?’ he asked me aloud.

So what of the fourth, what does it bring next?

Not steam, nor electric, or coding complexed.

Digital transformation is playing its part.

And cyber-tech works to make everything smart.

I know what you’re thinking so far on this rhyme.

BIM-mas is perfectly actually fine.

But a promise of Christmas words needs to be kept.

As festive breaks closer and nearer do crept(?)

At Hargreaves this month, with Xmas in store.

Year end changes twenty-three to twenty-four.

Machines start to slow as the factory takes pause.

And breaks for most everyone ‘cept Santa Claus.

Twas’ that night before Christmas, I was locking up.

Clearing my desk and washing my cup.

Paperwork stored for ISO compliance.

And leaving the office in near total silence.

I told Santa this cloud was made out of data.

A digital space growing greater and greater.

Connecting supply chains I tried to convey.

Faster than Santa, his reindeer and sleigh.

He asked of our factory and what of the sites?

‘Connected!’ said I with a hint of delight.

Come robots, AI, mobile tech and point cloud.

Repositing centrally, well, Santa was wowed!

A Christmassy journey of digitisation.

For the big man to ponder from nation to nation.

He left Exyte Hargreaves, no doubt he’ll be back.

To talk engineering and also HVAC. So that was our tale, when Saint Nick came to Bury.

A story of BIM, that’s both techy and merry.

Seasonal wishes at a time of good cheer.

ENVIRONMENT, HEALTH & SAFETY

By Neil Taylor, Head of EHS A Sustainable Christmas Story After almost a year in post I’m delighted with the steps we’ve taken on our environmental journey at Exyte Hargreaves. 2023 has seen improved data capture for our carbon waste emissions and a focus on sustainability throughout our supply chain. Particular progress is evident in our manufacturing facility where all our raw material steel is BES 6001 approved.

LED lighting is now installed in our factory too, offering an average energy efficiency improvement of 75%. By Designing and Manufacturing ‘Right First Time’ we seek to minimise the impact of our operations on the environment.

QUALITY & GOVERNANCE

By David Cree, Head of Quality & Governance Quality and excellence continue to be central to the Exyte Hargreaves business.

Our biggest departmental project in 2023 was undoubtedly the development and launch of our Integrated Management System.

This was a real team effort, including colleagues from Finance, Operations, EHS, Manufacturing and many more. The result is a fully digital, collaborative and evolving management system. Now fully accredited to ISO standards, our IMS brings greater efficiency, traceability and governance to the business.

Plaudits We’ve focused a lot on our internal and external audit procedures during 2023.

This is already paying dividends with our external audits this year yielding no Non Conformance Reports (NCRs). Our talented internal audit team is established and fully trained to ISO standards and we’re very proud of the work they’re doing to further improve our systems and processes.

MARKETING & COMMUNICATIONS

By John Prydderch, Head of Marketing & Communications Joining the company in 2022 represented an interesting challenge. Exyte Hargreaves marked 150 years in business (a ‘sesquicentennial’ as I would come to learn).

It was my responsibility to ponder not just how to commemorate the milestone, but what happens to an established brand in its aftermath. The answer was change, or more specifically using change as a means to effect a new beginning for Hargreaves.

2023 as a marketing strategy became a multifaceted exercise in rebuilding the foundations of our brand, experimenting with some new ideas and reintroducing the market to the special reasons why we’re the industry’s HVAC specialist of choice. 2024 should be a lot of fun!

Q. What were your first impressions of Exyte Hargreaves?

Hargreaves is a positive and relaxed workplace where everyone works effectively towards shared goals. I am here to learn and to support the company’s ongoing success.

What have you enjoyed working on so far?

I’ve been writing articles for our Intranet site (the HiP), creating LinkedIn posts, doing some internal photography and design work for our marketing campaigns. John’s been respectful, welcoming, and has integrated me quickly into the team.

Q. What do you enjoy doing outside work?

Music is a big interest of mine. I play guitar (electric and acoustic), piano/keyboard and bass.

I also enjoy football and support Manchester United but right now they are difficult to watch!
