L e g r a n d G a r g a n t ua Gargantuesque. Voilà un mot qui sonne bien, une invitation au rêve. Un repas gargantuesque ou un appétit gargantuesque évoquent immanquablement quelque chose de joyeux. Remontons à son origine. L’adjectif gargantuesque dérive de Gargantua, le nom du protagoniste d’une célèbre œuvre littéraire du XVIe siècle.

En 1535, François Rabelais, un ecclésiastique et médecin français, publie à Lyon “La vie très horrifique du grand Gargantua, père de Pantagruel”. Cet ouvrage, qui raconte les folles aventures du géant Gargantua, aborde également l’actualité politique de l’époque. Le court poème introductif en forme d’adresse au lecteur donne d’emblée le ton:

Amis lecteurs, qui ce livre lisez, Despouillez vous de toute affection; Et, le lisant, ne vous scandalisez: Il ne contient mal ne infection.

Vray est qu’icy peu de perfection Vous apprendrez, si non en cas de rire; Aultre argument ne peut mon cueur elire, Voyant le dueil qui vous mine et consomme: Mieulx est de ris que de larmes escripre, Pour ce que rire est le propre de l’homme.

Comme le docteur Rabelais l’affirme sans détour: rire est le propre de l’homme!

En ceci, le père spirituel de Gargantua s’inscrit dans une lignée d’écrivains célèbres qui, au fil des siècles, ont pris délibérément le parti du rire : du poète grec Aristophane à Plaute, l’auteur comique latin, et du Décaméron de Boccace à l’Eloge de la folie d’Erasme jusqu’à P.G. Wodehouse, aux plus sombres heures du XXe siècle.

L’œuvre de Rabelais raconte notamment la naissance de Gargantua, fils unique des géants Gargamelle et Grandgousier. « Le bon homme Grandgousier, beuvant et se rigollant avecques les aultres, entendit le cry horrible que son filz avoit faict entrant en lumière de ce monde, quand il brasmoit, demandant: «A boyre! à boyre! à boyre!» Dont il dist: « Que grand tu as! » (supple le gousier).

Ce que ouyans, les assistans dirent que vrayement il debvoit avoir par ce le nom Gargantua, puisque telle avoir esté la première parolle de son pere à sa naissance, à l’imitation et exemple des anciens Hebreux ». Rabelais décrit avec truculence LE NOM DU GÉANT

le féroce appétit de Gargantua, la quantité énorme de tissu nécessaire à la confection de sa garde-robe et les différents précepteurs à qui est confiée la lourde tâche de lui donner une bonne éducation. Car en matière de «bonne éducation», Rabelais, qui admire Erasme, préconise un programme d’apprentissage humaniste et moderne, similaire à celui recommandé par le philosophe dans L’Education d’un prince (1516) et Savoir-vivre à l’usage des enfants (1530).

Pendant que le jeune Gargantua poursuit ses études à Paris, le roi Picrochole, assoiffé de conquêtes, entre en guerre contre Grandgousier. Gargantua vole à la rescousse de son père et finit par triompher de Picrochole. Rabelais a puisé son inspiration dans l’actualité de l’époque : le personnage de Picrochole serait inspiré de Charles Quint, duc des Pays-Bas, d’Allemagne et d’Espagne, grand rival du roi de France, François 1er. Gargantua (alias François 1er) récompense son frère d’armes Jean, un moine courageux, en l’autorisant à fonder une abbaye. Il s’agit de la célèbre abbaye de Thélème, sise sur les bords de la Loire, où des hommes et des femmes, à la fois beaux, instruits et vertueux, vivent en communauté selon une règle unique: « Fais ce que voudras ». Car, comme l’écrit Rabelais: « Comment (disoit il) pourroy je gouverner aultruy, qui moy mesmes

Rabelais (1483-1553?) aurait été successivement moine franciscain, moine bénédictin, prêtre séculier, chanoine et prêtre d’une paroisse, avant d’exercer la médecine à Lyon et à Montpellier. Il mena une vie spirituelle agitée, reflet de ce XVIe siècle troublé. Dans les livres qu’il nous a laissés, on devine un esprit ouvert et curieux, un intellectuel humaniste, un écrivain désireux d’explorer toutes les richesses de la langue et un médecin qui n’a jamais interdit à ses patients de profiter de la vie. La stature de géant de Gargantua lui permet de s’en donner à cœur joie en passant en revue toutes les spécialités culinaires régionales de la France : boudins, langues de bœuf, saucissons de pâté de foie et jambons, tartes et pains divers et variés, plats de gibiers succulents et vins les plus raffinés figurent au menu. Ce penchant matérialiste ne doit toutefois pas faire oublier que Rabelais était avant tout un humaniste. Ainsi, lorsque le percepteur humaniste Ponocrates accepte de prendre en charge l’éducation de Gargantua, il étudie d’abord les habitudes alimentaires de son élève avant de l’inviter à la modération.

Il lui enseigne que les plaisirs de la table sont indissociables des plaisirs de la conversation qui sont autant d’occasions d’apprendre et de se divertir. Le jeune Gargantua étudie donc toute la matinée et ne prend son premier repas qu’à midi: « Ce pendent Monsieur l’Appetit venoit, et par bonne oportunité s’asseoient à table. Au commencement du repas estoit leue quelque histoire plaisante des anciennes prouesses, jusques à ce qu’il eust prins son vin. Lors (si bon sembloit) on continuoit la lecture, ou commenceoient à diviser joyeusement ensemble, parlans, pour les premiers moys, de la vertus, proprieté, efficace et nature de tout ce que leur estoit servy à table : du pain, du vin, de l’eau, du sel, des viandes, poissons, fruictz, herbes, racines, et de l’aprest d’icelles ». L’après-midi est consacré aux leçons et aux activités sportives en plein air ou, les jours pluvieux, à des visites d’ateliers d’artisans: « Eulx arrivez au logis, ce pendent qu’on aprestoit le souper, repetoient quelques passaiges de ce qu’avoit esté leu et s’asseoient à table. Notez icy que son disner estoit sobre et frugal, car tant seulement LE NOM DU GÉANT

gouverner ne sçaurois? ». Voilà pourquoi l’abbaye n’a pas de murs et la vie en commun n’y est pas soumise à des horaires précis. « Car (disoit Gargantua) la plus vraye perte du temps qu’il sceust estoit de compter les heures - quel bien en vient il? - et la plus grande resverie du monde estoit soy gouverner au son d’une cloche, et non au dicté de bon sens et entendement ». Thélème est un pays de cocagne pour lettrés qui depuis des siècles séduit les lecteurs. Pour autant, on n’y pratique pas l’amour libre. En effet, hommes et femmes y vivent en bonne entente et en toute amitié, mais dans des bâtiments séparés. Tous ceux qui y tombent amoureux doivent quitter les lieux.

Durant icelluy repas estoit continuée la leçon du disner tant que bon sembloit; le reste estoit consommé en bons propous, tous lettrez et utiles. Après graces rendues, se adonnoient à chanter musicalement, à jouer d’instrumens harmonieux, ou de ces petitz passetemps qu’on faict es chartes, es dez et guobeletz, et là demouroient, faisans grand chere et s’esbaudissans aulcunes foys jusques à l’heure de dormir; quelque foys alloient visiter les compaignies des gens lettrez, ou de gens que eussent veu pays estranges. En pleine nuict, davant que soy retirer, alloient au lieu de leur logis le plus descouvert veoir la face du ciel, et là notoient les cometes, sy aulcunes estoient, les figures, situations, aspectz, oppositions et conjunctions des astres ».

On ne sera pas surpris d’apprendre que Gargantua a vu le jour un après-midi de février, aux environs de mardi gras! Pour de nombreux lecteurs, la lecture de Rabelais s’accordait parfaitement à la période du Carnaval. On pouvait bien entendu lire le livre seul à voix basse et rire sous cape, ou se livrer à une activité bien plus divertissante: la lecture à voix haute, davantage en accord avec les us et coutumes de l’époque. Le lecteur lisait devant une petite assemblée et chacun était libre de l’interrompre pour commenter à loisir tel ou tel passage, s’émerveiller de la richesse de la langue, des intrigues, de la sagesse ou du génie satirique de l’auteur. D’aucuns pouvaient ainsi exprimer leur opinion lors des repas de fête qui précédaient carême.

Comme son œuvre l’atteste, Rabelais était amateur de paradoxes. Par exemple, il fait naître Pantagruel avant son géniteur. En 1532, trois ans avant la publication de Gargantua, Rabelais publiait Pantagruel, le récit épique de la vie du rejeton de Gargantua. « Gargantua, en son eage de quatre cens quatre vingtz quarante et quatre ans, engendra son filz Pantagruel de sa femme, nommée Badebec, fille du roy des Amaurotes en Utopie, laquelle mourut du mal d’enfant: car il estoit si merveilleusement grand et si lourd qu’il ne peut venir à lumière sans ainsi suffocquer sa mere. Car Panta en Grec vault autant à dire comme tout, et Gruel en langue Hagarene vault autant comme altéré, voulant inferer, que à l’heure de sa nativité le monde estoit tout altéré. » Dans ce livre, Rabelais se présente comme le serviteur de Pantagruel, témoin de ses nombreux exploits. A un certain moment, il s’abrite d’une averse en trouvant refuge dans le gosier de Pantagruel: il y découvre des montagnes blanches, des villes accueillantes et des terres fertiles où il séjourne plus de six mois. L’humour confine ici à l’absurde. Rabelais a préféré rester dans l’ombre: par précaution, il fit le choix de publier son livre sous l’ anagramme d’Alcofribas Nasier, pseudonyme qu’il transformera plus tard en Maître Alcofribas, abstracteur de quintessence.

L’éducation humaniste est également un thème important du Pantagruel.

Gargantua envoie son jeune fils dans plusieurs villes de France pour y étudier, jusqu’au moment où il choisit de s’installer à Paris pour y faire des études de droit. Dans un célèbre passage du livre, Pantagruel reçoit une lettre de son père qui lui explique comment le savoir des populations d’Europe occidentale a augmenté de manière exponentielle au cours des dernières décennies. Il s’agit d’un bel exemple de prise de conscience historique de l’avènement de l’homme de la Renaissance. « Le temps estoit encores tenebreux et sentant l’infelicité et la calamité des Gothz, qui avoient mis à destruction toute bonne literature. Mais, par la bonté divine, la lumiere et dignité a esté de mon eage rendue es lettres, et y voy tel amendement que de present à difficulté seroys je receu en la premiere classe des petitz grimaulx, qui, en mon eage virile, estoys (non à tord) reputé le plus sçavant dudict siecle ». « Maintenant toutes disciplines sont restituées, les langues instaurées: Grecque, sans laquelle c’est honte que une personne se die sçavant, Hebraïcque, Caldaïcque, Latine; les impressions, tant elegantes et correctes, en usance, qui ont esté inventées de mon eage par inspiration divine, comme à contrefil, l’artillerie par suggestion diabolicque. Tout le monde est plein de gens savans, de precepteurs tres doctes, de librairies tres amples, qu’il m’est advis que, ny au temps de Platon, ny de Ciceron, ny de Papinian, n’estoit telle commodité d’estude qu’on y veoit maintenant. Et ne se fauldra plus doresnavant trouver en place ny en compaignie, qui ne sera bien expoly en l’offcine de Minerve. Je voy les brigans, les boureaulx, les avanturiers, les palefreniers de maintenant plus doctes que les docteurs et prescheurs de mon temps. Que diray je? Les femmes et filles ont aspiré à ceste louange et manne celeste de bonne doctrine ». Rabelais savait de quoi il parlait: la princesse Marguerite de Navarre, sœur du roi François 1er et femme de lettres, auteur de L’Heptaméron, appréciait ses livres. Le XVIe siècle compte d’ ailleurs d’autres écrivaines: Hélisenne de Crenne, Louise Labé et Marie de Gournay en France, la régente Marguerite d’Autriche à Malines et Anna Bijns à Anvers, Vittoria Colonna et Veronica Franco en Italie, et plus tard Elisabeth Jane Weston à Prague.

La missive de son père encourage Pantagruel à redoubler d’efforts dans ses études. En peu de temps, il devient un juriste de premier plan dont la sagesse n’a rien à envier à celle du roi Salomon. Il parvient même à mettre fin au litige qui opposait depuis des années les seigneurs Baisecul et Humevesne (Comment les seigneurs de Baisecul et Humevesne plaidoient devant Pantagruel sans advocatz).

Une grande partie du livre est consacrée à l’amitié qu’entretient Pantagruel avec le brigand Panurge, une sorte de Tijl Uilenspiegel, qui multiplie blagues et plaisanteries.

Lors de leur première rencontre, Panurge répond à chaque question de Pantagruel dans une langue différente: allemand, italien, basque, écossais, vieux néerlandais, hébreux, grec, latin, « utopien » et patois tourangeau! Ce chapitre illustre la parabole de la Tour de Babel sur un mode comique. Rabelais recourt souvent à ce type d’énumérations pour créer un effet comique. Alors que Pantagruel se divertit des histoires que lui conte Panurge, il apprend soudain que son père a été enlevé par la fée Morgane (un personnage de la geste arthurienne) et que le peuple des Dipsodes (littéralement « les assoiffés ») a profité de son absence pour se livrer à des pillages. Afin de défendre le royaume de son père, Pantagruel part alors avec Panurge et sa suite pour Utopie. Il va triompher de l’armée des Dipsodes et de leur souverain Anarche (sans compter Loup Garou et ses 300 géants) pour se faire à son tour couronner roi des Dipsodes. L’un de ses courtisans revient alors de la mort et raconte son séjour aux enfers où toute la hiérarchie terrestre est inversée: tous les anciens tyrans doivent gagner leur pitance en exerçant un emploi modeste, tandis que les philosophes condamnés sur terre à vivre une vie misérable sont enfin reconnus à leur juste valeur. Aux enfers, par exemple, Alexandre le Grand est cordonnier et Cléopâtre marchande d’oignons, tandis que Diogène, le philosophe qui vivait dans un tonneau, mène une vie de prince. Tout comme dans l’épisode de Thélème, il s’agit d’un monde idéal né de l’imagination d’un intellectuel.

Pantagruel rend un jugement totalement incompréhensible qui est accepté par les deux parties. On croirait un sketch des Monty Python, tellement la situation est surréaliste!

Il est réjouissant de penser que nos ancêtres, eux aussi, appréciaient ce type d’humour confinant à l’absurde.

T i e r s , q ua r t, c i n q u i è m e Tant en France qu’aux Pays-Bas, les lecteurs du Gargantua et du Pantagruel attendaient avec impatience la suite des aventures des deux héros. Rabelais exhaussa leurs souhaits. En 1546, il publia sous son vrai nom Le Tiers Livre où Pantagruel se préoccupe avant tout des affres de conscience de Panurge qui s’interroge: dois-je me marier ? Mon épouse me sera-t-elle fidèle ? Pour obtenir une réponse à ces questions, Panurge va consulter successivement une prophétesse, un poète à l’agonie, un maître, un savant reconnu dans le monde entier, ainsi que divers théologiens et docteurs, et parvient à chaque fois à interpréter en termes clairs leurs réponses sibyllines, tout en critiquant au passage les sciences et les savoirs de son époque. Pour finir, il part en compagnie

A la dernière page du Quart Livre, les voyageurs ne sont toujours pas arrivés auprès de Bacbuc, l’oracle de la Dive Bouteille qui s’est transformée au fil du récit en Saint Graal de l’humanisme. Rabelais décède en 1553 et il faudra attendre le Cinquième Livre, paru en 1562, pour que les voyageurs parviennent finalement auprès de la prophétesse qui leur transmet le message suivant: Trinch. Bois. De fait, il est probable que ce cinquième volume soit une compilation d’écrits de Rabelais récupérés par des imprimeurs peu scrupuleux.

de Pantagruel pour un long périple sur les océans afin de consulter Bacbuc, la Dive Bouteille. Ainsi s’achève le Tiers Livre. En 1552, Rabelais publie le Quart Livre dans lequel les deux compères jettent l’ancre dans plusieurs pays habités par des populations étranges. Ce cadre idéal permet à l’écrivain de dénoncer une série de situations intolérables à ses yeux. Le récit, commencé avec le gosier de Gargantua se poursuit chez Messire Gaster, inventeur de tous les arts, « pour le servir tout le monde est empesché, tout le monde labeure. » S’agit-il de la profession de foi médicale de Rabelais? Le Quart Livre annonce Les voyages de Gulliver. Avec ses descriptions de nombreuses créatures monstrueuses et de la lutte permanente entre Carnaval et Carême, le livre n’est pas non plus sans rappeler les peintures de Bosch et de Brueghel, deux contemporains de Rabelais.

Dans sa dédicace au cardinal de Chastillon, Rabelais répond pour la première fois aux critiques adressées au cycle des géants: en effet, tant les théologiens parisiens de la Sorbonne que l’inflexible Jean Calvin de Genève avaient ouvertement condamné ses ouvrages: « Mais la calumnie de certains Canibales, misantropes, agelastes, avoit tant contre moy esté atroce & desraisonnée, qu’elle avoit vaincu ma patience: & plus n’estois deliberé en escrire un Iota. Car l’vne des moindres contumelies dont ilz usoient, estoit, que telz liures tous estoient farciz d’heresies diverses: n’en povoient toutes fois vne seulle exhiber en droict aulcun: de folastries ioyeuses hors l’offence de Dieu, & du Roy, prou (c’est le subiect & thème unicque d’iceulx liures) d’heresies poinct: sinon perversement & contre tout usaige de raison & de languaige commun, interpretans ce que à poine de mille fois mourir, si autant possible estoit, ne vouldrois avoir pensé Allors me dictes que de telles calumnies avoit esté le defunct roy François d’eterne memoire, aduerty: & curieusement aiant par la voix & pronunciation du plus docte & fidèle Anagnoste de ce royaulme ouy & entendu lecture distincte d’iceulx livres miens (ie le diz, par ce que meschantement l’on m’en a aulcuns supposé faulx & infames) n’avoit trouué passaiges aulcun suspect. »

L e s i èc l e d u g é a n t Dans les livres de Rabelais, les géants ont l’ air de personnages nés de l’imagination de l’auteur. Aujourd’hui, les géants sont considérés comme personnages légendaires, tandis que pour les générations précédentes, les récits de géants faisaient dès l’enfance partie du quotidien. Depuis le Moyen-Age, la procession annuelle du géant représentant Saint Christophe faisait partie de la vie des habitants de nombreux villes et villages du Brabant, du nord de la France et de Flandre. Le géant biblique Goliath accompagnait parfois ces célébrations.

D’après La Légende dorée (Legenda Aurea) de Jacques de Voragine qui raconte la vie des saints et martyrs chrétiens, Saint Christophe serait né au pays de Canaan.

Selon la croyance, le fait de voir une image de Saint Christophe protégeait d’une mort subite. D’après la Bible (Samuel, 17-4), Goliath serait né à Gath, une ville située à proximité de Canaan et de Juda. Le premier livre de la Bible, la Genèse, fait déjà mention de géants: « En ces jours-là, et même plus tard, il y avait des géants sur la terre. Les fils des dieux s’approchaient des filles des hommes et elles en avaient des enfants: ce sont les héros du temps jadis, des hommes de renom » (Gen. 6-4). On pensait que la plupart des géants avaient péri lors du Déluge. Les écrits d’Homère font également mention de leur existence: tout comme David triompha de Goliath en Terre Sainte, Ulysse affronta le cyclope Polyphème en Sicile. L’idée du géant était liée aux fondements de la culture occidentale, soit la culture grecque et la Bible.

Selon les auteurs de la Bible et les théologiens chrétiens, certains géants avaient survécu au Déluge avant d’être dispersés aux quatre coins du monde. L’Europe occidentale avait donc ses propres géants. Le roi Arthur a vaincu Rithon, le géant cruel qui coupait les barbes des rois pour s’en faire un manteau, puis le géant Dinabuc qui vivait sur le Mont-Saint-Michel. Le mythe fondateur de la ville d’Anvers repose également sur un géant local : le redoutable Druon Antigone, qui exigeait un droit de passage sur l’Escaut, jusqu’à ce que le jeune Silvius Brabo lui tranche la main. Au Moyen-Age, le nom Brabant dérive de ce Brabo, contemporain de Jules César. A Anvers, on peut voir un puits au délicat couronnement de fer forgé attribué à Quentin Metsys, le fondateur de l’école d’Anvers. A son sommet, le légendaire Brabo, vêtu en légionnaire romain, brandit la main du géant qui terrorisait les marins voguant sur l’Escaut. Ce puits, vraisemblablement créé par Quinten Metsys vers 1490, se trouvait autrefois à proximité de l’Hôtel de Ville. En 1550, il a été déplacé au Marché aux Gants, à côté de la cathédrale Notre-Dame, où il se trouve encore.

Le poète et chroniqueur Jean Lemaire de Belges, historiographe à la cour de la régente Marguerite d’Autriche, publia en 1512 dans son ouvrage Illustrations de Gaule, une version de la légende de Brabo qui fait encore référence. C’est également à cette époque, et ce n’est sans doute pas un hasard, qu’Anvers devint la principale ville du duché de Brabant, avant de devenir l’un des plus grands ports du monde: « Et en ce mesmes temps regnoit un merueilleux Géant nommé Druon, de la hauteur de quinze coudees, plein d’horrible & cruelle tyrannie.

Lequel se tenoit sur le riuage de Lescaut, en un fort chasteau, situé en un maretz.

Et contraignoit ledit Geant tous les passans, sur ladite riuiere, de laisser la iuste moytié de tous leur biens & marchandises quilz menoient par ladite riuiere.

Et sil y auoit aucune faute, le tout estoit confisqué, et auoit le marchant ou voiturier, une main coupee. Et pource sappeloit ce lieu Hantuuerp, cestadire laisse main, maintenant le nommons Anvers. Ce Geant criminel, fut combatu et rué ius par un des chevaliers de César […] ceux d Anvers monstrent encore iusques auiourdhuy en la maison de leur ville, aucuns os dudit Geant, qui sont de merueilleuse grosseur & grãdeur, comme iay veu […] ». Lors de son séjour dans la cité scaldienne en septembre 1520, Albrecht Dürer nota quant à lui dans son journal: « A Anvers, j’ai vu les ossements du géant. Son fémur fait au moins cinq pieds et demi de long et il est particulièrement lourd et très épais. L’une de ses omoplates est aussi large que le dos d’un homme de robuste carrure et elle était entourée d’autres ossements. Le géant devait faire 18 pieds de long. Il a régné sur Anvers et accomplit de grands miracles… ». Une ville qui doit sa naissance à la victoire d’un héros sur un géant local cruel, voilà qui n’est pas ordinaire et Anvers a été bien inspirée de ne pas passer sous silence une origine aussi glorieuse. En 1534, Pieter Coeck d’Alost, le maître de Pieter Brueghel, réalise un Druon Antigone destiné à remplacer les géants populaires Christophe et Goliath lors de la procession annuelle. La tête du géant, restaurée à de multiples reprises, est aujourd’hui conservée au Musée Aan de Stroom, ainsi que les ossements du géant (en réalité, il s’agit d’os de baleine). Au cours de ces dernières années, on assiste dans de nombreuses villes belges à un regain d’intérêt pour les géants locaux qui font leur réapparition lors des kermesses et des festivités où ils incarnent la fraternité et l’union de la population locale.

Dans son tableau La Tour de Babel, Pieter Brueghel fait implicitement référence au géant. En effet, selon la croyance de l’époque, la Tour de Babel aurait été construite par le géant Nemrod. Les chercheurs ont souligné à plusieurs reprises les similitudes entre l’œuvre littéraire de Rabelais et les peintures du maître flamand. Dans Gargantua, un chapitre entier est consacré à l’énumération des 20

Dans ses livres, il fait régulièrement référence à sa maison natale, La Devinière, située à 7 kilomètres de Chinon. Cette résidence secondaire, propriété du père de Rabelais, abrite aujourd’hui le Musée Rabelais. Même si Rabelais était très attiré par les villes, il n’a jamais oublié la beauté de la campagne de son enfance. La campagne est également un endroit propice à la détente et au repos. Lorsque le précepteur Ponocrates est satisfait des efforts de son élève Gargantua, il l’emmène à la campagne pour la journée: « Toutesfoys Ponocrates, pour le sejourner de ceste vehemente intention des esperitz, advisoit une foys le moys quelque jour bien clair et serain, auquel bougeoient au matin de la ville, et alloient ou à Gentily, ou à Boloigne, ou à Montrouge, ou au pont Charanton, ou à Vanves, ou à Sainct Clou. Et là passoient toute la journée à faire la plus grande chère dont ilz se pouvoient adviser, raillans, gaudissans, beuvans d’aultant, jouans, chantans, dansans, se voytrans en quelque beau pré, denichans des passereaulx, prenans LE NOM DU GÉANT

jeux auxquels Gargantua se livrait lorsqu’il était enfant. On ne peut s’empêcher de penser aux Jeux d’enfants de Breughel, conservé au Kunsthistorisches Museum de Vienne. La verve truculente de Rabelais se nourrit de proverbes, dont une grande partie avait également cours aux Pays-Bas. Au XVIe siècle, alors qu’Anvers était la capitale du commerce mondial, on assiste à la publication de nombreux dictionnaires de proverbes bi- ou trilingues (Français / Brabançon / Latin / Grec). Erasme est à l’origine de cet engouement pour la langue et les parlers populaires, lui qui publia plusieurs éditions de son ouvrage Les Adages entre 1500 et 1536, un recueil de dictons grecs et latins accompagnés d’un bref commentaire. Rabelais et Brueghel se sont inspirés de ce livre. Dans le Quart Livre, la lutte entre le roi Quaresmeprenant et les Andouilles n’est pas sans rappeler Le combat de Carnaval et Carême de Brueghel. La vision satirique des sciences incarnée par Her Trippa chez Rabelais, a-t-elle inspirée à Brueghel sa gravure L’Alchimiste? S’iI est difficile d’en apporter la preuve, il n’est reste pas moins vrai qu’à l’époque de Brueghel, Rabelais comptait de fervents admirateurs aux Pays-Bas. Ces deux immenses artistes partageaient une conception similaire de la rhétorique (on dirait aujourd’hui, de la « communication »), notamment le recours aux énumérations et à l’humour. En outre, en humanistes, les deux hommes partageaient un même intérêt pour l’existence ici-bas sous ses diverses formes.

des cailles, peschans aux grenouilles et escrevisses». L’abbaye de Thélème est également entourée de merveilleux jardins, de terrains de sport, de vergers et de parcs à gibier. En sa qualité de médecin, Rabelais associe le repos et la nature à la santé. Dans la dédicace du Quart Livre, il décrit les environs de Saint-Maurdes-Fossés, aux alentours de Paris, en ces termes: «salubrité, honestes plaisirs, rusticque» Il est agréable de retrouver l’esprit et l’héritage de Rabelais dans des réalisations hors du commun. A travers les siècles, son œuvre a été source d’inspiration pour les musées, les peintres et les écrivains. En 1994, c’est au tour du designer flamand Dirk Wynants de se tourner vers les personnages de Rabelais pour créer Gargantua, sa célèbre table de jardin. A la demande de son épouse, il imagine un meuble de jardin, en l’occurrence une table, à la fois solide et durable, qui permet dès l’arrivée des beaux jours de partager de bons moments autour d’un repas. L’écrivain aurait très certainement été séduit par cette idée. S’assoir dans le jardin autour d’une table en agréable compagnie pour partager un repas et rire jusque tard dans la nuit avant de contempler les étoiles: existe-t-il meilleur moyen de rendre hommage à l’œuvre de Rabelais ? En outre, Rabelais appréciait particulièrement le savoir-faire des artisans. Lorsqu’il décrit l’éducation de Gargantua, il souligne l’importance du travail manuel: « Mais après disner, en lieu des exercitations, ilz demouroient en la maison et, par maniere de apotherapie, s’esbatoient à boteler du foin, à fendre et scier du boys, et à batre les gerbes en la grange; puys estudioient en l’art de paincture et sculpture, ou revocquoient en usage l’anticque jeu des tales ainsi qu’en a escript Leonicus et comme y joue nostre bon amy Lascaris. En y jouant recoloient les passaiges des auteurs anciens esquelz est faicte mention ou prinse quelque metaphore sus iceluy jeu. Semblablement, ou alloient veoir comment on tiroit les metaulx, ou comment on fondoit l’artillerye, ou alloient veoir les lapidaires, orfevres et tailleurs de pierreries, ou les alchymistes et monoyeurs, ou les haultelissiers, les tissotiers, les velotiers, les horologiers, miralliers, imprimeurs, organistes, tinturiers et aultres telles sortes d’ouvriers, et, partout donnans le vin, aprenoient et consideroient l’industrie et invention des mestiers ».

La création de la table Gargantua a permis la création et le développement d’Extremis, la manufacture d’objets design de Dirk Wynants. Le nom Extremis est une traduction libre en latin d’« extraordinaire », un concept qui cadre parfaitement avec l’objectif de l’entreprise. En 1994, personne ne proposait une gamme de mobilier de jardin haut de gamme et encore moins des meubles de 22

Rabelais nous propose un récit divertissant plein de sagesse: « Crochetastes vous oncques bouteilles? Caisgne! Reduisez à memoire la contenence qu’aviez. Mais veistes vous oncques chien rencontrant quelque os medulare? C’est, comme dict Platon, lib. ij de Rep., la beste du monde plus philosophe. Si veu l’avez, vous avez peu noter de quelle devotion il le guette, de quel soing il le guarde, de quel ferveur il le tient, de quelle prudence il l’entomme, de quelle affection il le brise, et de quelle diligence il le sugce. Qui le induict à ce faire? Quel est l’espoir de son estude? Quel bien pretend il? Rien plus qu’un peu de mouelle. Vray est que ce peu plus est delicieux que le beaucoup de toutes aultres, pour ce que la mouelle est aliment elabouré à perfection de nature, comme dict Galen., iij Facu. natural., et xj De usu parti ». De même, Wynants opte délibérément pour la simplicité d’une ergonomie intuitive. Toutefois, cette simplicité est le fruit d’un long travail de réflexion sur les exigences et les contraintes en termes d’utilisation, de matériaux, de fabrication et de logistique. Tous ces éléments entrent en compte lors de la conception de ces tools for togetherness: instruments de rencontres intéressantes, de moments agréables, de plaisir esthétique, de fraternité et de créativité. Cette démarche permet à nouveau de transgresser les anciennes limites entre dedans et dehors: les créations innovantes d’Extremis peuvent s’utiliser tant à l’intérieur qu’à l’extérieur et trouvent leur place partout: séjours, bureaux, cafeterias de musée, patios, jardins à la campagne ou jardins publics urbains.

En tant que designer, il arrive aussi que Dirk Wynants transgresse les limites de sa profession. Après avoir transféré les bureaux de l’entreprise vers Poperinge, entre les champs de houblon, Wynants s’est lancé dans la culture du houblon.

Depuis des siècles, cette plante entre dans la fabrication des célèbres bières belges.

A partir du produit de sa récolte, il a créé sa propre bière, faiblement alcoolisée, baptisée Tremist. Une fois encore, le designer confirme qu’il reste enraciné dans la tradition et l’excellence locales. Une initiative que Rabelais et Gargantua n’auraient pas manqué d’applaudir!

jardin adaptés au climat belge, particulièrement ingrat pour ce type de mobilier.

En bon fils de menuisier, Wynants apprécie le bois, un matériau à la fois très résistant et écologique, qu’il associe au métal et aux matières synthétiques les plus performantes. Pour réaliser Gargantua et de nombreux autres objets, le designer a opté pour des essences particulièrement résistantes, d’une durée de vie pouvant aller jusqu’à cinquante ans, ce qui correspond à deux ou trois générations.

L’artisanat rejoint ici le patrimoine.

A l’occasion du 20e anniversaire de la table Gargantua et d’Extremis, Wynants présente Pantagruel, une table à la fois robuste, élégante et sobre. Le dessus, qui intègre une Lazy Susan (un plateau tournant pour les friandises), invite jeunes et moins jeunes à venir s’asseoir autour de la table pour partager un moment de convivialité. Pantagruel se veut rassembleur: cet objet plaisir générateur de moments agréables pourra se transmettre de génération en génération avec le souvenir d’instants de bonheur partagé.

DE GROTE GARGANTUA Gargantuaans. Een prachtig rollend woord, dat aanzet tot dromen. Mensen spreken over Gargantuaanse maaltijden, Gargantuaanse eetlust, altijd met een ondertoon van vrolijkheid. Waar komt dat mooie woord vandaan?

Gargantuaans is afgeleid van de eigennaam Gargantua, hoofdpersoon van een beroemd boek uit de zestiende eeuw. In 1535 publiceerde de Franse geestelijke en geneesheer François Rabelais in Lyon De zeer gruwelijke levensloop van de grote Gargantua, vader van Pantagruel. Gargantua was een reus die dolle avonturen beleefde, waarin de eerste lezers heel wat politieke actualiteit van die jaren herkenden. Het inleidende gedichtje, opgedragen “aan de lezers”, zette meteen de toon:

Gij allen, vrienden, die dit boek gaat lezen, Houdt rein uw zielement van kwade drift, En laat de stof u niet tot walging wezen, Want ze bevat venijn noch heimlijk gift.

Van starre schoonheid zal ‘k u schraal bedienen, Maar wie het lachen mint, krijgt hier zijn meug.

Ik heb het hart niet, lui te laten grienen Met smoelen, lang van rouw en leeg van vreugd.

Alzo zal ik u voort aan ’t lachen zien te krijgen, Want ’s mensen aard is hierin ’t meest zich eigen.

Kortom, dokter François Rabelais verkondigt hier zonder omwegen: mensen, lachen is gezond. Daarmee plaatst hij zich in de rij van schrijvers die door de eeuwen heen voluit voor de lach gekozen hebben: de Griekse komedieschrijver Aristophanes, de Romein Plautus, Boccaccio met zijn Decamerone, Erasmus met zijn Lof der Zotheid, in de sombere twintigste eeuw misschien vooral P.G. Wodehouse.

Het verhaal gaat zo: Gargantua wordt geboren, de enige zoon van de reuzen Grandgousier en Gargamelle. “Grandgousier hoorde de verschrikkelijke schreeuw die zijn zoon bij het ter wereld komen uitstootte en riep uit: ‘Que grand tu as le gosier [Wat kan jij een keel opzetten]. Dit vernemend, zeiden de omstanders dat hij nu maar Gargantua moest heten, omdat, naar het voorbeeld van de oude Hebreeërs, dit het eerste woord was dat zijn vader na zijn geboorte D E N A A M VA N D E R EUS

gesproken had.” Rabelais beleeft veel plezier aan de beschrijving van Gargantua’s enorme eetlust, van de enorme hoeveelheid textiel die er nodig is voor zijn garderobe, en van de verschillende leermeesters die hem een goede opvoeding proberen te geven. Want wat is dat eigenlijk, een goede opvoeding? Rabelais kiest voor een modern humanistisch leerprogramma, precies zoals zijn grote held Erasmus dat al had aangeprezen in de boeken Over de opvoeding van de christenvorst (1516) en Over de kinderlijke beleefdheid (1530). Wanneer Gargantua als jonge man in Parijs studeert, begint de hebzuchtige heerser Picrochole een oorlog tegen zijn vader. Gargantua schiet zijn vader te hulp en verslaat uiteindelijk Picrochole. Hier speelt de actualiteit van toen mee: Picrochole zou gebaseerd zijn op onze keizer Karel V, die als heerser over de Nederlanden, Duitsland en Spanje de grote rivaal was van de Franse koning Frans I. Gargantua (alias Frans I) beloont dan zijn medestrijder broeder Jan, een moedige monnik, door hem de toelating te geven zijn eigen abdij te stichten. Dit wordt de beroemde abdij van Thélème, aan de oevers van de Loire, waar mooie en begaafde mannen hoofs met vrouwen samenleven en de enige leefregel is: Doe

Rabelais (1483-1553?) zou achtereenvolgens franciscanermonnik, benedictijnermonnik, wereldlijk priester, kanunnik en parochiepastoor zijn geweest. Daarnaast was hij als dokter actief in Lyon en Montpellier. Zijn loopbaan als geestelijke wijst op rusteloosheid, typisch voor de onstuimige zestiende eeuw. Uit zijn boeken kunnen we bovendien afleiden dat hij gul en gulzig was, een intellectuele alleseter, een schrijver die van zijn taal een hoorn des overvloeds wilde maken, en een dokter die zijn patiënten nooit zou verbieden om van het leven te genieten. Dankzij de reuzengestalte van Gargantua kan Rabelais naar hartenlust en tot in het absurde doorbomen over de culinaire geneugten die Frankrijk met al zijn streekspecialiteiten te bieden heeft: hij heeft het over bloedworsten, ossentongen, leverworsten en hammen, verschillende soorten gebak en broodjes, heerlijke wildbraad en diverse topwijnen. Tegelijkertijd is Rabelais meer dan een materialist: wanneer de humanist Ponocrates Gargantua’s opvoeding met wijs beleid ter hand neemt, bestudeert hij eerst de eetlust van zijn pupil en matigt die vervolgens. Het genot van de tafel is vanaf dan steeds ook het genot van goede, leerzame en vermakelijke gesprekken.

De jonge Gargantua studeert de hele ochtend en neemt pas ’s middags zijn eerste maaltijd. “Intussen verscheen heer Appetijt, en dan zetten zij zich op het goede moment aan tafel. Bij de aanvang van het maal las men Gargantua, tot hij aan de wijn toe was, de een of andere vermakelijke historie uit de oude wapenfeiten voor. Daarna zette men de lectuur voort, als dat behagen gaf, of begonnen ze vrolijk samen te babbelen, elkaar onderhoudend, de eerste maanden, over de deugddoende vermogens, de hoedanigheid, de goede werking en de aard van hetgeen aan hun tafel werd opgediend: brood, water, wijn, zout, vlezen, vis, vruchten, groenten, kruiden en hoe die werden toebereid.“ De namiddag wordt gewijd aan lessen en sport in open lucht, op regenachtige dagen met bezoeken D E N A A M VA N D E R EUS

wat u goeddunkt. “Want hoe,” zei broeder Jan, “zou ik anderen kunnen regeren, terwijl ik mezelf niet te regeren weet?” Daarom wordt de abdij niet ommuurd en is de dag er niet geregeld naar vaste uren. “Want,” zo zei Gargantua, “men verklungelt zijn tijd niet erger dan wanneer men de uren telt. Wat goeds komt er uit voort? De grootste zottigheid ter wereld is , zich te regelen naar het slaan van een klok, in plaats van naar de ingeving van zijn gezond verstand en overleg.” De abdij van Thélème is een soort luilekkerland voor hoogopgeleiden, dat door de eeuwen heen lezers is blijven aantrekken. Thélème was overigens geen oord van vrije liefde: mannen en vrouwen leefden er vriendschappelijk, maar in aparte woonverblijven te samen. Als ze verliefd werden, verlieten ze de abdij om te trouwen.

Let wel dat het middagmaal van Gargantua sober en karig was, want hij at enkel om het knorren van zijn maag te doen bedaren; maar het avondeten was zwaar en overvloedig, en hij nam er zoveel van als waaraan hij behoefte had om zich te onderhouden en te voeden. En dit is het ware regime, zoals de goede en veilige geneeskunst dat voorschrijft, niettegenstaande een hoop ezels van dokters, waanwijs gemaakt in de pharmacopee van sofisten, het tegenovergestelde voorschrijven. Tijdens het maal zette men, zolang het hun aanstond, de les van het middageten voort; het overige van de tijd ging heen met even verstandige als leerzame gesprekken. Na gebeden te hebben, zongen zij, bespeelden welluidende instrumenten, of gaven zich over aan die amusementjes waar speelkaarten, dobbelstenen en bekertjes bij te pas komen. En daar bleef het bij, terwijl zij het er goed van namen en soms pret maakten tot aan het uur van slapengaan. Een enkele keer gingen zij bij een letterlievend genootschap op bezoek, of bij lieden die vreemde landen gezien hadden. In het nachtelijk donker, alvorens naar hun kamer te gaan, begaven zij zich naar het meest afzonderlijk liggend en open gedeelte van het huis, om het uitspansel gade te slaan, en daar letten zij op de kometen, zo die er waren, en op de figuren, gesteltenissen, aspecten, posities en conjuncties van de sterren.�

Het is geen toeval dat Gargantua op een namiddag in februari, omstreeks vastenavond, geboren is. Voor veel lezers was het boek met zijn avonturen uiterst geschikte lectuur voor in de carnavalsperiode. Men kon het uiteraard in afzondering lezen en gniffelen, maar veel amusanter nog was de toen gebruikelijke manier van lezen: voorlezen in gezelschap, zodat de vertolker en de toehoorders samen plezier konden maken, zich samen konden verwonderen om de taalrijkdom, de plotwendingen, de geleerdheid en het satirisch vernuft van de schrijver en samen hun duit in het zakje konden doen aan hun eigen feestmaaltijd, voordat de sobere tijd van de vasten aanbrak.

Rabelais hield van paradoxen en hij liet een paradoxaal oeuvre na. Zo liet hij de zoon geboren worden vóór de vader. In 1532, drie jaar voor Gargantua, publiceerde hij immers al Pantagruel, het epos over Gargantua’s zoon. “Op de leeftijd van vierhonderdvierenveertig jaren verwekte Gargantua zijn zoon Pantagruel bij zijn vrouw Badebec, dochter van de koning der Amauroten in Utopië, die in de barensweeën stierf: want hij was zo wonderbaarlijk groot en zo zwaar, dat hij niet voor de dag kon komen zonder zijn moeder te smoren.”

Gargantua noemt zijn zoon Pantagruel omdat die geboren is na een periode van grote droogte: “Panta is het Griekse woord voor alles, en Gruel is Arabisch en betekent dorstig, waarmee hij te verstaan wilde geven, dat op de dag van zijn geboorte de wereld heel en al versmacht was en in profetische vervoering voorzag, dat zijn zoon eenmaal heerser over de dorstigen zal wezen.” In dit boek vertolkt Rabelais ook zelf een rol, als bediende van Pantagruel en ooggetuige van zijn vele heldendaden. Zo daalt hij op een bepaald ogenblik af in Pantagruels mond en keel, om voor de stortregen te schuilen: hij ontdekt daar witte gebergten, gastvrije steden en vruchtbare vlakten, en verblijft er meer dan zes maanden – een staaltje van zijn absurde humor. Toch trad Rabelais niet openlijk voor het voetlicht als schrijver: hij husselde voorzichtigheidshalve de letters van zijn naam door elkaar tot het pseudoniem Alcofribas Nasier, en verfraaide dit later nog tot Magister Alcofribas, abstracteur van kwintessens.

Ook in Pantagruel is de moderne opvoeding een belangrijk thema. Gargantua stuurt zijn jonge zoon naar verschillende Franse steden om te studeren, tot hij uiteindelijk in Parijs een opleiding in de rechten kiest. Na enige tijd ontvangt Pantagruel in een beroemde passage een brief van zijn vader, waarin die uiteenzet hoe de algemene kennis van de bevolking in West-Europa in een paar tientallen jaren exponentieel toegenomen is. Een mooi voorbeeld van het zelfbewustzijn en het historisch bewustzijn van de renaissancemens. “Het was een nog duistere tijd, en met pijnlijke druk maakte zich voor ons toen het onheil voelbaar dat de Gothen hadden aangesticht door alle goede literatuur te vernietigen. Maar door Gods goedheid zijn in deze dagen licht en waardigheden aan de letteren hergeven, en ik bespeur er zulk een verbetering in, dat het mij nu moeilijk zou vallen, in de eerste klas van de kleine schooljongens toegelaten te worden, mij, die op mannelijke leeftijd, en niet ten onrechte, voor de grootste geleerde der toenmalige eeuw doorging. […]

Thans zijn alle vakken van wetenschap in hun oude staat hersteld, hebben de talen haar plaats gekregen: het Grieks, zonder hetwelk het een schande zou wezen, zich geleerde te noemen; het Hebreeuws, het Chaldeeuws, het Latijn; de gedrukte boeken, zo sierlijk en nauwkeurig, waarvan men zich bedient en die in mijn tijd door goddelijke inspiratie zijn uitgevonden, evenals, bij wijze van tegenproef, de artillerie, door duivelse inblazing. De wereld is vol geleerde lieden, zeer knappe leermeesters en zeer ruime boekerijen, en naar het mij voorkomt, was er noch in de tijd van Plato, noch in de tijd van Papinianus, ter studie zoveel gerief als men tegenwoordig aantreft; en nimmer zal men voortaan elders behoeven te vertoeven, dan in gezelschap van lieden die in Minerva’s werkplaats duchtig gepolijst zijn. Ik zie de rovers, beulen, avonturiers, palfreniers van tegenwoordig beter onderlegd dan de doctoren en predikanten uit mijn tijd.

Wat zal ik zeggen? De vrouwen en jonge meisjes zelfs dongen naar deze glorie en hemels manna der ware kennis.” Van dat laatste kon ook Rabelais meespreken: de gecultiveerde prinses Margaretha van Navarra, zuster van koning Frans I en zelf schrijfster van de Heptameron, hield van zijn boeken. En er waren in de zestiende eeuw nog andere schrijfsters actief : Hélisenne de Crenne, Louise Labé en Marie de Gournay in Frankrijk, landvoogdes Margaretha van Oostenrijk in Mechelen, Anna Bijns in Antwerpen, Vittoria Colonna en Veronica Franco in Italië, later Elisabeth Jane Weston in Praag.

Door de brief van zijn vader wordt Pantagruel aangemoedigd om nog intenser te studeren. In geen tijd ontpopt hij zich dan ook als een rechtsgeleerde met de wijsheid van Salomo. Hij slaagt er zelfs in een al jaren aanslepend geschil 34

Een groot deel van het boek is gewijd aan Pantagruels vriendschap met de schelm Panurg, een soort Tijl Uilenspiegel, die als meesteroplichter tal van grappen en grollen uithaalt. Bij hun eerste ontmoeting antwoordt Panurg op elke vraag van Pantagruel in een andere taal. Hij spreekt achtereenvolgens Duits, Italiaans, Baskisch en Schots, Oud-Nederlands, Hebreeuws en Grieks, Utopisch en Latijn, om te eindigen met het Frans uit de streek van Touraine. Zo wordt dit hoofdstukje een grappige illustratie van het begrip Babelse spraakverwarring. Rabelais hield van dit soort humor-dooropsomming. Te midden van al dat Panurgische vermaak ontvangt Pantagruel plotseling het bericht dat zijn vader ontvoerd is door de fee Morgante (ook bekend uit de cyclus verhalen over koning Arthur) en dat het volk van de Dipsoden, of Dorstigen, van Gargantua’s afwezigheid profiteert om zijn land te plunderen. Samen met Panurg en de rest van zijn gevolg vaart hij uit naar Utopië om zijn vaders grondgebied te beschermen. Hij verslaat het leger van de Dipsoden (met onder andere driehonderd reuzen onder leiding van een zekere Weerwolf) en hun koning Anarch, en verovert ten slotte zelf het land van de Dipsoden, waar hij koning wordt. En passant keert een van zijn hovelingen uit de dood terug en vertelt over zijn verblijf in de hel, waar de rollen zijn omgedraaid: alle tirannen uit het verleden moeten er moeizaam de kost verdienen met onnozele baantjes, terwijl deugdzame, maar arme filosofen eindelijk de plak over hen kunnen zwaaien. Alexander de grote is er schoenlapper en Cleopatra verkoopt er uien, maar Diogenes, de filosoof van de ton, leeft er als een vorst. Net als de abdij van Thélème is dit een typische wensdroom van intellectuelen…

tussen de heren Drecsnuf en Van Billicus te beslechten. De beide heren zetten hun kant van de zaak voor hem uiteen, in onbegrijpelijke toespraken. Pantagruel velt dan een volstrekt onbegrijpelijk vonnis, dat iedereen tevreden stemt. Het zou een sketch van Monty Python kunnen zijn, zo knap wordt het surrealistische gegeven uitgewerkt. En het is ook voor ons een prettige gedachte, dat onze voorouders net als wij absurde situatiehumor konden waarderen.

TIERS , QUART, CINQUIĂˆME De lezers van Gargantua en Pantagruel, in Frankrijk maar ook in de Nederlanden, snakten al gauw naar meer, en Rabelais was graag bereid het hun te geven. In 1546 publiceerde hij onder zijn eigen naam Le Tiers Livre, Het Derde Boek, waarin Pantagruel zich vooral bekommert om Panurgs gewetensvraag: zal ik trouwen of niet, en zal mijn vrouw me dan bedriegen en bestelen? Panurg klopt bij verschillende instanties aan om een antwoord – bij een profetes, een stervende dichter, bij een zekere Meester Trippa, universeel geleerde, en bij theologen en dokters. Hij slaagt er in om hun sombere antwoorden steeds naar zijn eigen zin uit te leggen, en terloops de hele staat van wetenschap en geleerdheid uit zijn tijd te hekelen. Ten slotte vertrekt hij samen met Pantagruel op reis om overzee het orakel van de heilige Flesse Klikklok te raadplegen. Wat men noemt een open einde. In 1552 volgde dus nog Le Quart Livre, Het Vierde Boek, waarin de kompanen het anker uitwerpen in verschillende havens bij

verschillende bizarre volkeren, een ideaal kader voor een schrijver om tal van wantoestanden uit zijn eigen samenleving op de korrel te nemen. Het verhaal dat begon met het keelgat van Gargantua belandt hier ten slotte bij Messire Buik, de uitvinder van alle kunsten. “Om hem te dienen is al de wereld in het gareel en aan de arbeid.” De medische geloofsbelijdenis van Rabelais? Het Vierde Boek leest als een voorloper van Gulliver’s Travels. Door de beschrijving van talrijke monsters en een soort eeuwigdurende strijd tussen carnaval en vasten, herinnert het boek ook aan de schilderijen van Bosch en Bruegel, twee tijdgenoten van de schrijver. In de opdracht van het boek, aan de kardinaal van Chastillon, verdedigde Rabelais zich voor het eerst tegen de kritiek die hij uit verschillende hoeken op zijn reuzencyclus had vernomen: zowel de theologen van de Sorbonne in Parijs als de ijzeren Jean Calvin in Genève lieten hun afkeuring voor zijn werk blijken. “Maar de lasterpraat van een zeker slag kannibalen, nijdassen en zuurpruimen had zich zo venijnig en onbekookt tegen mij bekeerd, dat ik er mijn geduld bij verloren heb en het besluit nam, geen jota meer te schrijven.

Want een van de geringste schimpscheuten die zij te pas brachten, was dat die boeken doorspekt waren met allerhande ketterijen. Nochtans konden zij er van geen enkele plaats ook maar een tevoorschijn brengen, wel een menigte olijke grollen die God noch de koning te na kwamen, want daar gaan al deze boeken enkel over; maar ketterijen: niet eentje; tenzij door de dingen averechts en tegen elk gebruik der menselijke taal en rede in zo uit te leggen , als ik ze, op straffe van een duizendvoudige dood, - indien men zo dikwijls sterven kon – niet gedacht zou willen hebben. […] Alstoen zeidet gij mij, dat die laster wijlen koning Frans, eeuwiger gedachtenis, ter ore was gekomen, en dat, toen hij zich uit nieuwsgierigheid de inhoud dezer mijne boeken door de stem en voordracht van de meest geleerde en betrouwbare lector liet voorlezen (mijn eigen boeken, dat zeg ik erbij, omdat men mij wel eens uit boosaardigheid het auteurschap van vervalste en schandelijke geschriften heeft aangewreven), hij er geen enkele bedenkelijke passage in aantrof.”

Op de laatste bladzijde van Het Vierde Boek zijn de reisgenoten echter nog altijd niet bij het orakel van de heilige Fles Klikklok aangekomen; en dat orakel is in de loop van het verhaal uitgegroeid tot de heilige Graal van het humanisme. In 1553 stierf Rabelais, naar men vermoedt. In 1562 verscheen Le Cinquième Livre, het vijfde boek, waarin de reisgenoten dan eindelijk wel bij het langverwachte orakel aankomen en daar één enkel woord van levensvreugde horen spreken: Trinch.

Drink. Vermoedelijk is dit vijfde boek een compilatie van slimme uitgevers, die gebruik konden maken van aantekeningen van Rabelais.

DE EEU W VAN DE REUS In de boeken van Rabelais lijken de reuzen vooral een originele literaire vondst van de schrijver. Voor ons zijn reuzen immers sprookjesfiguren. Voor onze voorouders lag dat anders: zij waren van kindsbeen af vertrouwd met verhalen over reuzen. Sinds de middeleeuwen konden de inwoners van vele Vlaamse, Brabantse en Noord-Franse steden de figuur van de heilige reus Sint-Christoffel zien uitrijden in de jaarlijkse processies. Soms was ook de Bijbelse reus Goliath in die plechtigheden te zien. Christoffel was volgens de klassieke middeleeuwse verzameling heiligenlevens, de Legenda Aurea van Jacob de Voragine, afkomstig uit Kanaan. Men geloofde dat wie een afbeelding van hem zag, die dag niet schielijk zou sterven. Goliath stamde volgens het Bijbelboek Samuel 17, 4 uit Gat, een stad op de rand van Kanaan en Juda. Reuzen kwamen overigens al voor in het eerste Bijbelboek Genesis: “In die dagen – en ook nog daarna – leefden er reuzen op de aarde, doordat de zonen van God gemeenschap hadden gehad met de dochters van de mensen die hun zonen hadden gebaard. Zij waren de befaamde geweldenaars van de oude tijd” (Gen. 6, 4). Men ging ervan uit dat de meeste reuzen waren omgekomen in de zondvloed. Voor het bestaan van reuzen leken ook de geschriften van Homerus argumenten te bieden: zoals David Goliath versloeg in het heilig land, zo versloeg Odysseus de cycloop Polyphemos op Sicilië. Het idee van de reus was verbonden met de grondslagen van de Westerse beschaving: de Griekse cultuur en de Bijbel.

Omdat sommige reuzen volgens Joodse schriftgeleerden en christelijke theologen de zondvloed hadden overleefd, en mogelijk daarna over de aarde waren uitgezwermd, kende West-Europa een aantal autochtone reuzen. Koning Arthur versloeg de kwaadaardige reus Ritho, die baarden van mensenkoningen verzamelde om zijn mantel te voeren, en de reus Dinabuc die op de Mont-SaintMichel woonde. De ontstaansmythe van de stad Antwerpen bevatte ook zulk een lokale reus: de wrede Druoon Antigoon, die tol hief in een bocht van de Schelde, tot de jonge soldaat Silvius Brabo hem versloeg en zijn hand afhakte.

In de middeleeuwen leidde men de naam Brabant af van deze Brabo, een tijdgenoot van Julius Caesar. De grondlegger van de Antwerpse schilderschool, Quinten Metsys, plaatste Brabo in Romeins uniform op de top van zijn prachtige smeedijzeren putkevie, met de reuzenhand boven zijn hoofd geheven. Metsys zou de putkevie omstreeks 1490 hebben gemaakt. Oorspronkelijk stond ze bij het stadhuis, in 1550 werd ze verplaatst naar de huidige locatie op de Handschoenmarkt bij de Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekathedraal.

De geschiedschrijver Jean Lemaire de Belges, in dienst van landvoogdes Margaretha van Oostenrijk, publiceerde in 1512 de doorslaggevende versie van de Brabolegende, in zijn Illustrations de Gaule. Dit waren niet toevallig ook de jaren waarin Antwerpen uitgroeide tot de belangrijkste stad van het hertogdom Brabant, en weldra tot een van de belangrijkste havens ter wereld.

“In diezelfde tijd heerste er een wonderbaarlijke reus, genaamd Druoon, vijftien el hoog en vol van een vreselijke en wrede tirannie. Hij woonde op een oever van de Schelde, in een versterkte burcht, in een moeras. En deze reus dwong alle passanten op de genaamde rivier om hem exact de helft te geven van al hun goederen & handelswaar die zij over de rivier vervoerden. Bleef er een in gebreke, dan nam hij alles in beslag en hakte de koopman of vrachtvoerder een hand af. En daarom heette die plaats Hantwerp, dit betekent, laat hand, wij noemen haar nu Antwerpen. Een ridder van Caesar vocht met deze misdadige reus en versloeg hem […]. Die van Antwerpen tonen vandaag nog in hun stadhuis enkele beenderen van de genaamde reus, die zijn wonderlijk dik & groot, zoals ik gezien heb.” Tijdens zijn verblijf in de Scheldestad noteerde de beroemde kunstenaar Albrecht Dürer in september 1520 in zijn dagboek: “Ik heb in Antwerpen de beenderen van de grote reus gezien. Het been boven de knie is vijfenhalve voet lang en buitengewoon zwaar en erg dik; een van zijn schouderbladen is even breed als de rug van een sterke man en er waren nog andere beenderen. En de man is 18 voet lang geweest, heeft in Antwerpen geregeerd en grote wonderen verricht…” Een stad die ontstaan was doordat een held een wrede lokale reus had verslagen, zou wel dwaas zijn geweest om zulk een interessante en roemvolle oorsprong weg te moffelen. In 1534 ontwierp Pieter Coecke van Aalst, de leermeester van Pieter Bruegel, een Druoon Antigoon, die de allemansreuzen Christoffel en Goliath zou vervangen in de jaarlijkse processie. Het meermaals gerestaureerde hoofd van deze reus is nu te bewonderen in het Museum Aan de Stroom, net als zijn beenderen (in werkelijkheid walvisbeenderen). De laatste jaren is er overigens in vele Belgische steden een hernieuwde belangstelling voor deze lokale reuzenfiguren, die opnieuw tevoorschijn komen tijdens kermissen en feestelijkheden en die, zoals vroeger, het samenhorigheidsgevoel van de burgers gestalte geven.

Met zijn schilderij De toren van Babel verwees ook Pieter Bruegel impliciet naar een reus: men geloofde immers dat de toren van Babel gebouwd was door de reus Nemrod. Maar er is door onderzoekers al vaker gewezen op bepaalde gelijkenissen tussen het literaire werk van Fransman Rabelais en de schilderijen van de Brabantse meester. In Gargantua is een heel hoofdstuk gewijd aan een 40

GARGANTUA , PANTAGRUE L , NOG STEEDS Rabelais is op het platteland geboren, in het hart van Frankrijk. Hij vermeldt zijn vaders landhuis La Devinière, op zeven kilometer van Chinon, regelmatig in zijn boeken. Hier kan men nu een Rabelaismuseum bezoeken. Hoewel hij de rest van zijn leven dol was op steden, bleef de schoonheid van landelijke omgevingen hem aantrekken. Op het platteland kan men zich ontspannen en uitrusten van zware inspanningen. Wanneer leermeester Ponocrates vindt dat zijn pupil Gargantua genoeg zijn best heeft gedaan, trekken ze een dagje de natuur in. “Desondanks zocht Ponocrates, om hem van die hevige geestesinspanning rust te geven, eens per maand een klare, kalme dag uit, waarop zij in de ochtend de stad verlieten en er op uittrokken naar Gentilly of naar Boulogne, naar Montrouge of de brug van Charenton, naar Vauves of naar Saint-Cloud. En daar ging de ganse dag heen met de grootste pret te maken die zij maar konden bedenken; zij schertsten, joelden en dronken naar hartenlust, dansten en zongen, trokken buitelend een lustig weitje door, hier een mussennest uithalend, daar op kwartels jagend, of kikkers vangend en vissend naar kreeften.” Ook de abdij van Thélème is landelijk gelegen en omgeven door prachtige tuinen, sportvelden, boomgaarden D E N A A M VA N D E R EUS

pure opsomming van de spelletjes die Gargantua speelt als kind. Dan is het niet moeilijk om aan Bruegels Kinderspelen in Wenen te denken. Rabelais’ sappige taal puilt uit van de spreekwoorden, en vele daarvan werden ook gebruikt in de Nederlanden; in de handelsstad Antwerpen verschenen er in de zestiende eeuw talrijke twee- of meertalige spreekwoordenboeken (Frans/Brabants/ Latijns/Grieks). De bron van deze belangstelling voor de taal en de volkstaal was Erasmus, die tussen 1500 en 1536 verschillende uitgaven van zijn beroemde Adagia of Spreekwoordenboeken publiceerde, eigenlijk bundels columns gebaseerd op antieke zegswijzen. Rabelais liet zich erdoor inspireren, Bruegel eveneens. De strijd tussen koning Vastgraag en de Worsten in Het Vierde Boek, herinnert die niet aan Het gevecht tussen carnaval en vasten? De satire op de wetenschappen die Herr Trippa belichaamt, leverde Bruegel die ook niet in zijn prent De Alchimist? Rechtstreekse beïnvloeding is niet echt aan te wijzen, hoewel Rabelais in Bruegels tijd vurige bewonderaars telde in de Nederlanden.

De grote schrijver en de grote schilder putten wel uit dezelfde opvattingen over retorica (of, zoals het nu heet, communicatie) in hun gebruik van opsommingen en humor, en uit hetzelfde arsenaal van humanistische belangstelling voor alle verschijningsvormen van het aardse leven.

en wildparken. Als dokter associeerde Rabelais de rust van de natuur met gezondheid. Zo beschrijft hij in de opdracht van Het Vierde Boek de omgeving van Saint-Maur-des-Fossés, niet ver van Parijs, als ”een plaats, beter en juister gezegd, een paradijs van gezondheid, weldoende luchten, wolkenloze stilte, welbehagen en geneugten, deelhebbend aan al de onschuldige genoegens van de veldbouw en het buitenleven.”

Het is mooi om de geest en de erfenis van Rabelais terug te vinden in bijzondere dingen. Zijn werk begeesterde musea, schilders en schrijvers door de eeuwen heen, maar daarbij blijft het niet. In 1994 liet Kempens ontwerper Dirk Wynants zich door Rabelais’ personages inspireren bij het ontwerp van de iconische tuintafel Gargantua: op verzoek van zijn vrouw maakte hij een sterk en duurzaam meubelstuk waaraan mensen samen kunnen genieten van goed weer, goede maaltijden en goede gesprekken. Dit zou de schrijver ongetwijfeld genoegen hebben gedaan. Tafels, tuinen, gezellige omgang, samen eten en lachen tot ’s avonds laat en dan kijken naar de sterren: wat past er beter bij zijn werk? Bovendien hield Rabelais bijzonder veel van goed vakmanschap. Toen hij de opvoeding van Gargantua beschreef, voorzag hij ook praktische kunde: “om op krachten te blijven, hadden zij er schik in om hooi op te binden, hout te kloven en te zagen, en de garven in de schuur te dorsen; daarna legden zij zich toe op de schilder- en beeldhouwkunst…. Eveneens gingen zij zien, hoe men metalen giet, of bezochten zij de diamantwerkers, goudsmeden en slijpers, of de alchemisten en muntmeesters, of de tapijtknopers, de wevers, de werkers in fluweel, de klokken- en spiegelmakers, de drukkers, de orgelbouwers, de ververs en zulke soorten werklui meer. En overal fooien gevend, leerden zij de vlijt en de vindingrijkheid van de ambachten kennen.”

Samen met de tafel Gargantua ontstond en groeide Extremis, Dirk Wynants’ designmanufactuur. De naam Extremis is een vrije Latijnse vertaling van Buitengewoon, en dat begrip typeert de doelstelling van het bedrijf. In 1994 ontwierp haast niemand hoogstaande meubels voor buiten, zeker niet voor het wisselvallige Belgische klimaat, dat zware eisen stelt qua weerbestendigheid. Als zoon van een schrijnwerker gebruikt Wynants nog steeds graag het traditionele en ecologisch verantwoorde materiaal hout, in combinatie met metaal en de beste kunststoffen. Voor Gargantua en vele volgende ontwerpen koos hij steeds houtsoorten met de hoogste graad van duurzaamheid, die tot vijftig jaar, dus twee à drie generaties meegaan. Zo transformeert vakmanschap tot erfgoed.

Als ontwerper overschrijdt Dirk Wynants soms ook de strikte grenzen van zijn beroep. Nadat de kantoren van Extremis hun intrek namen tussen de Poperingse hopvelden in de Vlaamse Westhoek begon hij zelf hop te telen. Deze plant wordt sinds eeuwen gebruikt voor de bereiding van de beroemde Belgische bieren.

Met de oogsten creëerde hij een eigen bier met laag alcoholpercentage, Tremist genoemd. Een voorbeeld te meer van de wijze waarop deze ontwerper geworteld blijft in locale traditie en excellentie. En een ontwikkeling die zowel Rabelais als Gargantua zouden hebben toegejuicht.

Rabelais schreef een vermakelijk verhaal om diepere wijsheden over te brengen.

“Hebt u weleens een fles ontkurkt? Pang! Denk eens aan het gezicht dat u daarbij trok. En zaagt u verder ooit een hond die een mergpijp vond? Dat is, zegt Plato in boek II van zijn Republiek, het wijsgerigste dier ter wereld. Zo gij dit ooit zaagt, dan hebt gij kunnen opmerken, hoe godvruchtig hij die bespiedt, hoe zorgzaam hij die bewaakt, met hoeveel vuur hij die vasthoudt, hoe behoedzaam hij die wegsleept, met hoeveel toewijding hij die stukbijt, hoe vlijtig hij die uitzuigt.

Wie zet hem er toe aan om dit te doen? Wat koopt hij van die drukte? Welk goed begeert hij? Niets meer dan een beetje merg. ’t Is waar, dit weinige is kostbaarder dan het vele van alle andere dingen, omdat merg een voedsel is dat de natuur tot volmaaktheid heeft opgevoerd.” Op dezelfde manier kiest Wynants in zijn ontwerpen voor intuïtieve bruikbaarheid en eenvoud, maar die eenvoud kan slechts tot stand komen dankzij gedegen onderzoek van de behoeften waaraan het meubelstuk moet beantwoorden, van het materiaal, de nodige technische processen en de transportproblemen. Dit alles om de innovatieve ontwerpen ten volle te laten dienen als tools for togetherness: instrumenten voor interessante ontmoetingen, goede uren, esthetisch genot, samenhorigheid en creativiteit. En zodoende wordt de oude grens tussen binnen en buiten opnieuw overschreden: de huidige ontwerpen van Extremis zijn bedoeld om zowel binnenshuis als buitenshuis te functioneren, in woonkamers, kantoren, museumcafé’s, patio’s, plattelandstuinen en gemeenschappelijke stadstuinen.

Nu, precies twintig jaar later, viert Dirk Wynants de verjaardag van Gargantua en Extremis met het ontwerp Pantagruel. Een aardje naar zijn vaartje. Pantagruel is robuust, elegant en sober. Het tafelblad met lazy Susan, draaischijf voor lekkernijen, brengt mensen van alle leeftijden samen en maakt het hen gemakkelijk. Een tool for togetherness, gerief voor gezelligheid, dat men kan doorgeven aan de volgende generaties, inclusief de goede herinneringen.

T h e g r e at G a r g a n t ua Gargantuan. A beautiful rolling word that sparks the fantasy. People speak of Gargantuan meals, Gargantuan appetite, always with an undertone of joviality.

Where does this beautiful word come from?

Gargantuan is derived from the proper name Gargantua, the leading character of a famous book from the sixteenth century. In 1535, the French priest and physician François Rabelais published The Very Horrific Life of Great Gargantua, Father of Pantagruel in Lyon. Gargantua was a giant who lived through fantastic adventures, in which the first readers recognised a great deal of political developments of that period. The introductory poem, dedicated ‘to the readers’, immediately set the tone:

Good friends, my Readers, who peruse this Book, Be not offended, whilst on it you look: Denude yourselves of all depraved affection, For it contains no badness, nor infection: ’Tis true that it brings forth to you no birth Of any value, but in point of mirth; Thinking therefore how sorrow might your mind Consume, I could no apter subject find; One inch of joy surmounts of grief a span; Because to laugh is proper to the man.

In short, doctor François Rabelais clearly proclaims: people, laughter is the best medicine. This places him in the line of writers who, through the ages, have expressly chosen laughter: the Greek comic playwright Aristophanes, the Roman Plautus, Boccaccio and his Decameron, Erasmus and his In Praise of Folly, and in the sombre twentieth century perhaps P.G. Wodehouse in particular.

The story goes as follows: Gargantua was born, the only son of the giants Grandgousier and Gargamelle. “The good man Grandgousier , drinking and making merry with the rest, heard the horrible noise which his son had made as he entered into the light of this world, when he cried out Some drink, some drink, some drink; whereupon he said in French, Que grand tu as et souple le gousier! that is to say, How great and nimble a throat thou hast. because it was the first word that after his birth his father had spoke, in imitation, and at the example of the ancient Hebrews;” Rabelais takes great joy in describing Gargantua’s enormous appetite, the enormous amount of fabric needed for his wardrobe and the various teachers who try to give him a good education. For what is that actually, a good education? Rabelais chooses a modern humanist education, exactly like his great hero Erasmus had already recommended in the books The Education of a Christian Prince (1516) and A handbook on good manners for children (1530). When Gargantua studies in Paris as a young man, the greedy ruler Lord Picrochole starts a war against his father.

Gargantua comes to his father’s aid and eventually defeats Picrochole. This is where the developments of the sixteenth century come into play: Picrochole was supposedly based on our Emperor Charles V, who as ruler of the Netherlands, Germany and Spain, was the great rival of the French king Francis I. Gargantua (alias Francis I) rewards his fellow combatant Friar John, a courageous monk, by giving him permission to establish his own abbey. This will become the famous Abbey of Thélème, on the banks of the Loire, where handsome and gifted men and courtly women live together, and the only rule of life is: Do what thou wilt.

Rabelais (1483-1553?) was believed to have been a Franciscan monk, Benedictine monk, worldly priest, canon and parish priest respectively. In addition to that, he was active as a physician in Lyon and Montpelier. His career as a priest points to restlessness, characteristic of the turbulent sixteenth century. We can gather from his books that he was generous and greedy, an intellectual omnivore, a writer who wanted to make his language a cornucopia of pleasures, and a doctor who would never forbid his patients to enjoy life. Thanks to the giant build of Gargantua, Rabelais can ramble on to his heart’s content and to the point of absurdity about the culinary delights France has to offer with all its regional specialities: he mentions blood sausage, ox tongues, liver sausages and hams, different kinds of pastries and breads, delicious roast game and various excellent wines. Still, Rabelais is more than a materialist: when the humanist Ponocrates takes up Gargantua’s education with wise skill, he first studies the appetite of his pupil and consequently reduces it. The pleasure of the table is from then on the pleasure of good, informative and entertaining conversations. The young Gargantua studies the whole morning and only has his first meal at noon. “In the meantime Master Appetite came, and then very orderly sat they down at table.

At the beginning of the meal there was read some pleasant history of the warlike actions of former times, until he had taken a glass of wine. Then, if they thought good, they continued reading, or began to discourse merrily together; speaking first of the virtue, propriety, efficacy, and nature of all that was served in at the table; of bread, of wine, of water, of salt, of fleshes, fishes, fruits, herbs, roots, and of their dressing.” The afternoon is dedicated to classes and sports in the open air, and to visiting the workplaces of craftsmen on rainy days. “While dinner was being prepared, they recollected some passages that had been read and seated themselves at the table. Here remark, that his dinner was sober and thrifty, for he did then eat only to prevent the gnawings of his stomach, but his supper was THE NAME OF THE GIANT

“For how shall I be able, said he, to rule over others, that have not full power and command of myself?” For this reason, the Abbey is not walled in and the day there is not arranged around fixed hours. For, said Gargantua, the greatest loss of time that I know is to count the hours. What good comes of it? Nor can there be any greater dotage in the world than for one to guide and direct his courses by the sound of a bell, and not by his own judgment and discretion.” The Abbey of Thélème is a sort of promised land for the highly-educated, which has continued to attract readers through the centuries. Thélème was, however, not a place of free love: men and women lived there amicably, but in separate living quarters. If they fell in love, they left the Abbey to get married.

copious and large, for he took then as much as was fit to maintain and nourish him; which, indeed, is the true diet prescribed by the art of good and sound physic, although a rabble of loggerheaded physicians, nuzzeled in the brabbling shop of sophisters, counsel the contrary. During that repast was continued the lesson read at dinner as long as they thought good; the rest was spent in good discourse, learned and profitable. After that they had given thanks, he set himself to sing vocally, and play upon harmonious instruments, or otherwise passed his time at some pretty sports, made with cards or dice, or in practising the feats of legerdemain with cups and balls. There they stayed some nights in frolicking thus, and making themselves merry till it was time to go to bed; and on other nights they would go make visits unto learned men, or to such as had been travellers in strange and remote countries. When it was full night before they retired themselves, they went unto the most open place of the house to see the face of the sky, and there beheld the comets, if any were, as likewise the figures, situations, aspects, oppositions, and conjunctions of both the fixed stars and planets.�

It is no coincidence that Gargantua was born in the afternoon in February, around Shrove Tuesday. For many readers, the book was particularly suitable reading material for the carnival period with all its adventures. One could read it and snigger in seclusion, but the conventional way of reading at the time was far more amusing: reading aloud in company, so that the performer and the listeners could enjoy themselves together, collectively marvel at the richness of the language, the plot twists, the erudition and the satirical ingenuity of the writer and contribute to their own feast together, before the sober time of fasting started.

Rabelais loved paradoxes and he left behind a paradoxical body of work. For instance, he let the son be born before the father. In 1532, three years prior to Gargantua, he published Pantagruel, the epic about Gargantua’s son. “Gargantua at the age of four hundred fourscore forty and four years begat his son Pantagruel, upon his wife named Badebec, daughter to the king of the Amaurots in Utopia, who died in childbirth; for he was so wonderfully great and lumpish that he could not possibly come forth into the light of the world without thus suffocating his mother.” Gargantua names his son Pantagruel, because he was born after a period of great drought. “And because in that very day Pantagruel was born, his father gave him that name; for Panta in Greek is as much to say as all, and Gruel in the Hagarene language doth signify thirsty, inferring hereby that at his birth the whole world was a-dry and thirsty, as likewise foreseeing that he would be some day supreme lord and sovereign of the thirsty Ethrappels.”

In this book, Rabelais himself plays a role, as the servant of Pantagruel and eyewitness to many of his heroic acts. At a certain moment he descends into Pantagruel’s mouth and throat, to shelter from the pouring rain: there, he discovers white mountains, hospitable cities and fertile plains, and stays there for more than six months – a fine example of his absurd humour. However, Rabelais did not seek the spotlight as a writer: as a precaution, he rearranged the letters of his name into the pseudonym Alcofribas Nasier and embellished this later to Magister Alcofribas, abstractor of the quintessence.

Modern education is also an important theme in Pantagruel. Gargantua sends his youngest son to several French cities to study, until he eventually chooses to study law in Paris. After some time Pantagruel receives a letter from his father, in which he sets out how the general knowledge of the population of Western Europe has exponentially increased in a couple of decades. A great example of the self-awareness and the historical consciousness of the renaissance man.

“For that time was darksome, obscured with clouds of ignorance, and savouring a little of the infelicity and calamity of the Goths, who had, wherever they set footing, destroyed all good literature, which in my age hath by the divine goodness been restored unto its former light and dignity, and that with such amendment and increase of the knowledge, that now hardly should I be admitted unto the first form of the little grammar-schoolboys — I say, I, who in my youthful days was, and that justly, reputed the most learned of that age.

Now is it that the minds of men are qualified with all manner of discipline, and the old sciences revived which for many ages were extinct. Now it is that the learned languages are to their pristine purity restored, viz., Greek, without which a man may be ashamed to account himself a scholar, Hebrew, Arabic, Chaldaean, and Latin. Printing likewise is now in use, so elegant and so correct that better cannot be imagined, although it was found out but in my time by divine inspiration, as by a diabolical suggestion on the other side was the invention of ordnance. All the world is full of knowing men, of most learned schoolmasters, and vast libraries; and it appears to me as a truth, that neither in Plato’s time, nor Cicero’s, nor Papinian’s, there was ever such conveniency for studying as we see at this day there is. Nor must any adventure henceforward to come in public, or present himself in company, that hath not been pretty well polished in the shop of Minerva. I see robbers, hangmen, freebooters, tapsters, ostlers, and such like, of the very rubbish of the people, more learned now than the doctors and preachers were in my time. What shall I say? The very women and children have aspired to this praise and celestial manner of good learning.” Rabelais could relate to the latter: the cultivated princess Margaret of Navarre, sister of king Francis I and herself writer of the Heptameron, loved his books. And there were other female writers active during the sixteenth century: Hélisenne de Crenne, Louise Labé and Marie de Gournay in France, Governess Margaret of Austria in Mechelen , Anna Bijns in Antwerp, Vittoria Colonna and Veronica Franco in Italy, later Elisabeth Jane Weston in Prague.

The letter from his father encourages Pantagruel to study even more intensely.

A large part of the book is dedicated to Pantagruel’s friendship with the scoundrel Panurge, a kind of Till Eulenspiegel, who plays lots of jokes and pranks as a master swindler. When they first meet, Panurge answers all Pantagruel’s questions in a different language. He speaks German, Italian, Basque and Scottish, Old Dutch, Hebrew and Greek, Utopian and Latin successively, ending with French from the region of Touraine. This makes the chapter an amusing illustration of the phrase Babel-like confusion of tongues. Rabelais loves this type of humour by enumeration. In the midst of all that Panurgic amusement, Pantagruel suddenly receives word that his father has been kidnapped by the Morgan the fairy (also known from the story cycle about king Arthur) and that the people of the Dipsodes, or the Thirsty People, are profiting from Gargantua’s absence by plundering his country. Together with Panurge and the rest of his following, Pantagruel sets sail to Utopia to protect his father’s territory. He defeats the army of the Dipsodes (including three hundred giants led by a certain Werewolf) and their king Anarche, and he finally conquers the land of the Dipsodes himself, where he becomes king. Incidentally, one of his courtiers comes back from the dead and tells about his stay in hell, where the roles are reversed: all tyrants from the past have to struggle to make a living with measly jobs, while virtuous, yet poor philosophers can finally hold sway over them. Alexander the Great is a shoemaker there and Cleopatra sells onions, but Diogenes, the philosopher of the barrel, lives like a king. Like the Abbey of Thélème, this is a typical fantasy of intellectuals...

He quickly reveals himself to be a legal scholar with the wisdom of Solomon. He even succeeds in settling a dispute which had dragged on for years between the Lords of Kissbreech and Suckfist. (How the Lords of Kissbreech and Suckfist did plead before Pantagruel without an attorney - Drecsnuf en Van Billicus). Pantagruel delivers a completely incomprehensible verdict, which satisfies all parties. The surrealist idea is worked out in such a clever way that it could be a Monty Python sketch. It is a rather pleasant thought for us that our ancestors could appreciate absurd situational humour as much as we do.

T h i r d, f o u r t h , f i f t h The readers of Gargantua and Pantagruel, in France, but also in the Netherlands, soon longed for more, and Rabelais was eager to provide them with it. In 1546, he published Le Tiers Livre (The Third Book) under his own name, in which Pantagruel is mainly concerned with Panurge’s tricky question: shall I get married or not, and will my wife then deceive me and rob me? Panurge turns to several authorities in search of an answer – an oracle, a dying poet, a certain Herr Trippa, universal scholar, and theologians and doctors. He constantly succeeds in interpreting their grim answers from his point of view, and casually denouncing the entire state of science and scholarship of his time. Finally, he leaves with Pantagruel to travel overseas to consult the oracle of the Holy Bottle Bacbuc. This is what one calls an open ending. In 1552, Le Quart Livre (The Fourth Book) followed, in which the companions drop anchor in different harbours with various bizarre people, an ideal framework for a writer to criticise a number of wrongs in his own society. The story which began in the throat of

Gargantua ends here at Master Gaster, inventor of the arts. “Everyone is busied and labours to serve him.” Rabelais’ medical testament? The Fourth Book reads like a forerunner of Gulliver’s Travels. Owing to the descriptions of numerous monsters and an everlasting struggle between carnival and fasting, the book is also reminiscent of the paintings of Bosch and Breugel, two contemporaries of the writer. In the book’s inscription, to the cardinal of Châtillon, Rabelais defended himself for the first time against the criticism he had heard about from various quarters to his giant cycle: both the theologians of the Sorbonne in Paris and the steely Jean Calvin in Geneva expressed their disapproval of his work.

“But the Calumny of certain cannibals, misanthropes and agelastes against me had been so atrocious and irrational against me that it had vanquished my patience, and I was determined not write one more jot about this. For one of the slightest contumelies they used was such that books were full of diverse heresies. Nevertheless, they could not show one single instance; much, indeed, of comical and facetious fooleries, neither offending God nor the king (and truly I own they are the only subject and only theme of these books), but of heresy not a word, unless they interpreted wrong, and against all use of reason and common language, what I had rather suffer a thousand deaths, if it were possible, than have thought; as who should make bread to be stone, a fish to be a serpent, and an egg to be a scorpion. This, my lord, emboldened me once to tell you, as I was complaining of it in your presence, that if I did not esteem myself a better Christian than they show themselves towards me, and if my life, writings, words, nay thoughts, betrayed to me one single spark of heresy, or I should in a detestable manner fall into the snares of the spirit of detraction, (Greek), who, by their means, raises such crimes against me; I would then, like the phoenix, gather dry wood, kindle a fire, and burn myself in the midst of it. You were then pleased to say to me that King Francis, of eternal memory, had been made sensible of those false accusations; and that having caused my books (mine, I say, because several, false and infamous, have been wickedly laid to me) to be carefully and distinctly read to him by the most learned and faithful anagnost in this kingdom, he had not found any passage suspicious.” On the last page of The Fourth Book, the travel companions have yet to arrive at the oracle of the Holy Bottle Bacbuc; and that oracle has become the holy grail of humanism during the course of the story. In 1553 Rabelais is thought to have died. In 1562, Le Cinquième Livre (The Fifth Book) was published, in which the travel companions finally arrive at the oracle and hear one single word of joie de vivre spoken: Trinch. Drink. This fifth book is probably a compilation by clever publishers, who were able to make use of Rabelais’ notes.

T h e c e n t u ry o f t h e g i a n t In Rabelais’ novels, the giants mostly seem to be an original literary invention of the writer. To us, after all, giants are fairytale characters. This was not the same for our ancestors: they were familiar with stories of giants from childhood. Since the Middle Ages, inhabitants of many Flemish, Brabant and Northern French cities could see the figure of the holy giant Saint Christopher ride out during the annual procession. Sometimes the Biblical giant Goliath accompanied him.

According to the medieval record of hagiographies, the Legenda Aurea of Jacob de Voragine, Christopher originated from Canaan. People believed that whoever saw a picture of him, would not die unexpectedly that day. According to the Bible book Samuel 17:4, Goliath came from Gath, a city on the borders of Canaan and Judah. It should be noted that giants already appeared in the first Bible book Genesis: “In those days, and even later, there were giants on the earth, when the sons of God came into the daughters of men, and they bore sons to them. The same became mighty men who were of old, men of renown.” (Genesis 6:4). It was assumed that most of the giants had perished during the flood. The writings of Homer also seem to argue for the existence of giants: in the same way David defeated Goliath in the Holy Land, Odysseus defeated the cyclops Polyphemus in Sicily. The concept of the giant was connected to the foundation of Western civilisation: Greek culture and the Bible.

Because some giants had survived the flood, according to Jewish scribes and Christian theologians, and had possibly swarmed out over the earth after that, Western Europe had a number of indigenous giants. King Arthur defeated the malicious giant Ritho, who collected beards of human kings to line his cloak with, and he also fought the giant Dinabuc who lived on the Mont Saint-Michel.

The creation myth of the city of Antwerp similarly featured a local giant: Druon Antigoon, who charged a toll in a bend of the river Scheldt, until the young soldier Silvius Brabo defeated him and cut off his hand. In the Middle Ages, the name Brabant was derived from this Brabo, a contemporary of Julius Caesar.

The founder of the Antwerp School of painting, Quinten Metsys, placed Brabo in Roman uniform on the top of his exquisite wrought iron well shaft ornament, with the giant’s hand raised above his head. Metsys would have made the well shaft ornament around 1490. It originally stood next to the town hall, and it was moved to its current location on the Handschoenmarkt near the Cathedral of Our Lady in 1550.

The historian Jean Lemaire de Belges, in the service of Governess Margaret of Austria, published the definitive version of the Brabo legend in 1512, in his Illustrations de Gaule. These were, unsurprisingly, the years in which Antwerp became the most important city in the Duchy of Brabant, and one of the most important harbours in the world soon after. “During that time a miraculous giant prevailed, named Druon, fifteen ell tall and held a frightful and cruel tyranny. He lived on a bank of the river Scheldt, in a fortress in a swamp. And this giant forced all passing ship masters to give him exactly half of all their merchandise they were transporting on the river. If they didn’t comply, he would seize everything and cut off the merchant’s or the ship master’s hand.

Hence the place was named Hantwerp, meaning hand and to throw, we now call her Antwerp. A knight of Caesar battled this criminal giant and defeated him […]. The people of Antwerp still show some of the giant’s bones in their town hall, which are miraculously thick and large, as I have seen.” During his stay in the city, the renowned artist Albrecht Dürer wrote in his diary in September 1520: “I saw at Antwerp the bones of the giant. His leg above the knee is five and a half foot long and beyond measure heavy and thick, so with his shoulder blades—a single one is broader than a strong man’s back—and his other limbs.

The man was 18 foot high, had ruled Antwerp and done wondrous feats...” A city which came into existence because a hero had defeated a cruel local giant, it would have been foolish to cover up such an interesting and glorious origin. In 1534, Pieter Coecke van Aalst, the teacher of Pieter Breugel, designed a Druon Antigoon, which would replace the standard giants Christopher and Goliath during the annual procession. The head of this giant, which was restored several times, can now be seen at the Museum aan de Stroom, as can his bones (actually whale bones). The last few years there has been a renewed interest in these giant characters, which once again appear during fun fairs and festivities and which, like the old days, give shape to the citizens’ sense of togetherness.

With his painting The Tower of Babel, Pieter Breugel also referred implicitly to a giant: after all, it was believed the tower of Babel was built by the giant Nimrod.

Researchers have often pointed out certain similarities between the literary work of the Frenchman Rabelais and the paintings of the Brabant master. In Gargantua, an entire chapter is dedicated to a pure list of the games Gargantua played as a child. It is not difficult to be reminded of Breugel’s Children’s Games in Vienna. Rabelais’ vivid language is bursting with proverbs, and many of them were also used in the Netherlands; numerous bilingual or multilingual books of proverbs (French/Brabant/Latin/Greek) were published in the sixteenth 60

He mentions his father’s country estate La Devinière, seven kilometres from Chinon, regularly in his books. Today, one can visit a Rabelais museum there. Even though he was fond of cities for the rest of his life, the beauty of rural surroundings continued to appeal to him. In the countryside, one can relax and recover from great exertions. When the teacher Ponocrates feels his pupil Gargantua has done his best, they retreat into nature for a day. “Nevertheless Ponocrates, to divert him from this vehement intension of the spirits, thought fit, once in a month, upon some fair and clear day, to go out of the city betimes in the morning, either towards Gentilly, or Boulogne, or to Montrouge, or Charanton bridge, or to Vanves, or St. Clou, and there spend all the day long in making the greatest cheer that could be devised, sporting, making merry, drinking healths, playing, singing, dancing, tumbling in some fair meadow, unnestling of sparrows, taking of quails, and fishing for frogs and crabs.” The Abbey of Thélème is also situated in the countryside and surrounded by beautiful gardens, sports fields, orchards and game parks. As a doctor, Rabelais associated the tranquillity of nature with health. In the inscription of The Fourth Book, he describes the surroundings of Saint-Maur-des-Fossés, not far from Paris, as “a place, or better and more accurately put, a paradise of health, beneficent air, cloudless silence, pleasure and delights, participating in all the innocent satisfactions of farming and the outdoors.”

century in the merchant city Antwerp. The source of this interest for language and the colloquial language was Erasmus, who published various editions of his famous Adagia or Books of Proverbs between 1500 and 1536, actually volumes of columns based on classical sayings. Rabelais was inspired by this, as was Breugel.

Isn’t the battle between king Lent and the Chitterlings in The Fourth Book reminiscent of The fight between Carnival and lent? The satire of the sciences that Herr Trippa symbolises; didn’t Breugel also portray this in his print, The Alchemist? It is not possible to point out a direct influence, although Rabelais had passionate admirers in the Netherlands in the age of Breugel. The great writer and the great painter both draw from the same beliefs on rhetoric (or, as it is now called, communication) in their use of enumerations and humour, and from the same arsenal of humanist interest for all manifestations of earthly life.

It is nice to discover Rabelais’ spirit and legacy in special things. His work inspired museums, painters and writers through the ages, but that is not all.

In 1994, Flemish designer Dirk Wynants drew inspiration from Rabelais characters for the design of the iconic garden table Gargantua: at his wife’s request, he created a strong and durable piece of furniture at which people can enjoy good weather, good meals and good conversations together. This would have undoubtedly satisfied the writer. Tables, gardens, social interaction, eating together and laughing until nightfall and watching the stars: what could be more fitting to his work? Moreover, Rabelais especially loved good craftsmanship.

When he described the education of Gargantua, he also provided practical expertise: “But after dinner, instead of their wonted exercitations, they did abide within, and, by way of apotherapy (that is, a making the body healthful by exercise), did recreate themselves in bottling up of hay, in cleaving and sawing of wood, and in threshing sheaves of corn at the barn. Then they studied the art of painting or carving; They went likewise to see the drawing of metals, or the casting of great ordnance; how the lapidaries did work; as also the goldsmiths and cutters of precious stones. Nor did they omit to visit the alchemists, moneycoiners, upholsterers, weavers, velvet-workers, watchmakers, looking-glass framers, printers, organists, and other such kind of artificers, and, everywhere giving them somewhat to drink, did learn and consider the industry and invention of the trades.”

Along with the table Gargantua, Dirk Wynants’ design company Extremis was developed. The name Extremis is a free translation in Latin of Exceptional, and that notion characterises the objective of the business. In 1994, hardly anyone designed high-minded furniture for outside, especially not to suit the changeable Belgian climate, which can be quite demanding in terms of weather resistance. As the son of a carpenter, Wynants still enjoys using the traditional and ecologically responsible material wood, combined with metal and the best synthetics. For Gargantua and many other designs after that, he continually chose types of wood with the highest grade of durability, which will last up to fifty years, or about two to three generations. In this way, craftsmanship is transformed into heritage.

Rabelais wrote an amusing story to convey deeper wisdom. Did you ever pick the lock of a cupboard to steal a bottle of wine out of it? Tell me truly, and, if you did, call to mind the countenance which then you had. Or, did you ever see a dog with a marrowbone in his mouth — the beast of all other, says Plato, lib.

As a designer, Dirk Wynants also crosses the strict lines of his profession sometimes. After the offices of Extremis found a place between the hop gardens in the Flemish Westhoek, he started cultivating hops again himself. This plant has been used for centuries for the production of the famous Belgian beers.

With the harvests, he created his own beer with a low alcohol percentage, called Tremist. Another example of the way this designer stays rooted in local tradition and excellence. A development that both Rabelais and Gargantua would have welcomed.

If you have seen him, you might have remarked with what devotion and circumspectness he wards and watcheth it: with what care he keeps it: how fervently he holds it: how prudently he gobbets it: with what affection he breaks it: and with what diligence he sucks it. To what end all this? What moveth him to take all these pains? What are the hopes of his labour? What doth he expect to reap thereby? Nothing but a little marrow.

True it is, that this little is more savoury and delicious than the great quantities of other sorts of meat, because the marrow (as Galen testifieth, 5. facult. nat. & 11. de usu partium) is a nourishment most perfectly elaboured by nature.� In the same way, Wynants chooses intuitive utility and simplicity in his designs, but this simplicity can only be achieved thanks to thorough research into the requirements the piece of furniture must meet, the material, the necessary technical processes and the transport issues. All of this to allow the innovative designs to serve as tools for togetherness: tools for interesting meetings, joyous hours, aesthetic pleasure, togetherness and creativity. And in this way, the old boundary between inside and outside is crossed yet again: the current designs of Extremis are meant to function both inside as well as outside, in living rooms, offices, museum cafÊs, patios, country gardens and communal city gardens.

Now, exactly twenty years later, Wynants is celebrating the anniversary of Gargantua and Extremis with the design Pantagruel. A chip off the old block.

Pantagruel is robust, elegant and sober. The table top with a lazy Susan, a rotating tray for delicacies, brings people of all ages together and makes them feel at ease.

A tool for togetherness, convenient for socialising, which one can pass on to the next generations, including the good memories.
