Green living roofs offer a multitude of benefits to local communities
By installing sedum green living roofs on bus shelters, local authorities can make a meaningful impact on their cities, paving the way for a greener, healthier, and more sustainable future. Green roofs not only enhance the visual appeal of urban spaces but also offer a range of environmental, social, and economic benefits. Furthermore, they align seamlessly with the sustainability targets of local authorities, making them a strategic choice for councils aiming to meet their green objectives.
The MONO Haven can feature a standard flat roof or our innovative Hub roof design which allows for enhanced branding and route finding. The integration of solar panels powers LED lighting as well as enhancing the sustainability and social value credentials of your public transport infrastructure.
Refurbishing shelters is the ideal time to retrofit a living green roof. After a survey to confirm the structural integrity of the shelter, a ‘green’ roof can be retrofitted to suitable shelters, improving air quality and contributing positively to your environmental and sustainability goals. Read our article on the environmental, financial and social benefits of green living roofs for your transport scheme.

Bus Shelter Refurbishment
The results will be clear to see - for passengers & your bottom line
Refurbishing bus shelters is more than just a practical solution; it’s a step toward environmental, economic, and community advancement. We can work together to modernise your transit infrastructure – sustainably and affordably. We have a specialist bus shelter refurbishment team that delivers stunning results without the need for full replacement. Our approach is both environmentally friendly and financially savvy, helping local authorities and organisations save costs while making a positive impact on the planet.
Why Choose Refurbishment?
1.Like New Appearance: Our expert treatments can restore your shelters to look as good as new.
2.Eco-Friendly: Reduce waste, conserve resources, and lower your carbon footprint by choosing refurbishment over replacement.
3.Significant Cost Savings: Avoid the high expense of purchasing and installing new shelters.
4.Extended Lifespan: Increase the durability and functionality of your existing structures.
Enhance with a Green Living Roof
We can also retrofit bee-friendly green roofs, where suitable, to contribute to biodiversity and promote sustainability.
Oxfordshire County Council recently asked Externiture to assist on a multiple-site install of bus shelters and associated works. From the initial conversation with the team through to the delivery of the final shelters, the service and communication have been second to none. With an ongoing programme of S106 works and other maintenance matters to work through, having a supplier we can rely on helps immeasurably.

Sustainability & Social Value
We are actively working towards Net Zero by 2050 and choose to work with suppliers who share this commitment. We aim to reduce the overall carbon footprint of our products and operations alongside working towards establishing the embodied carbon status of our products.
SUSTAINABLE MATERIALS AND LONGEVITY
Our shelters and bus stop poles are constructed from durable extruded aluminium billett, designed for long life and ease of maintenance. From 2025, they will exclusively be made using 100% recycled aluminium from one of Europe’s leading sustainable aluminium mills, whose goal by mid-2025 is for 100% of power used in their production to come from renewable energy sources - mainly solar).
WASTE REDUCTION & CIRCULAR ECONOMY PRACTICES
We prioritise recycling and modular design. Our manufacturing facility and offices send zero waste to landfill, metal waste is re-used or recycled and in the past 2 years we have reduced packaging by 40%, including a 62% reduction in single-use plastics. Shelters are modular, allowing components to be reused or repurposed, supporting circular economy goals.
ENERGY EFFICIENCY AND RENEWABLES
Many of our shelters operate entirely on renewable energy and battery power, incorporating solar panels, PIR sensor lighting, and wireless charging for mobile phones. By 2025, all our facilities will be powered by renewable energy.
BIODIVERSITY AND CONSERVATION
We integrate green roof technology to enhance biodiversity, support pollinators, and contribute to climate change mitigation. Additionally, a percentage of contract values from long-term projects is allocated to local and national conservation initiatives.
EMISSION REDUCTION & SUPPLY CHAIN IMPROVEMENTS
We source materials locally (UK and European suppliers), use Euro 6 diesel vehicles. We are also preparing to conduct
Scope 3 Carbon Auditing for our value chain.
SOCIAL VALUE
We are committed to increasing the social value our business creates in our local area and in the communities served by our customers.
