We are facing the upturn with passion, commitment and hard new investments.

We have at long last had a trade fair – our first in Sweden for two years. It was eagerly awaited by the entire industry. The Wood Transportion Expo in Ljusdal was really excellent. Exactly as it always is. Happy, positive timber hauliers, drivers and body builders took turns in an unending stream of visitors, and most of them sooner or later ended up at our stand.

In this positive environment we displayed our latest updated products, and as usual there was great interest.

At the same time as the Wood Transportion Expo at the end of September, we also showed up at fairs in both Germany and Poland, as well as in France and Spain during the summer.

To sum up, it can be said that markets all over the world are showing the same high level of interest.

Everyone needs and wants our products.

We are definitely noticing this here in the factory in Ygskorset. Production is in full swing.

Despite many missed trips and customer visits, for obvious reasons, we have maintained our position.

It is now time for us to really start moving forward again.

We sometimes have cause to remind both ourselves and the outside world why our business was started up in the first place. Most people probably know by now that it all started in 1898.

In 2021 – 100 years later – we are driven by the same great passion. We are now entering a new period with great confidence and many development ideas. We have summarised what we wish to achieve over the coming years in what we call Vision 2025.

This means we will be investing even more. We are investing in more efficient production equipment in order to respond to the upturn. We are hiring more service partners all round the country, to give customers increased proximity to service and spare parts.

And we will of course be increasing our presence in the field – assisting timber hauliers and body builders.

We will then realise all their opinions in new smart products. A process that has been in action for over a hundred years and never stops.

If the weather, at least on the first day of the fair, was a little inclement, the many visitors were all the happier.

No miserable faces as far as the eye could see. According to everyone, everyone was positive.

And as usual there was a constant and rapid stream of people going to ExTe's stand. It goes without saying for most people, as most timber hauliers are ExTe's customers.

At ExTe's stand you feel a natural sense of belonging and security by virtue of having made the right choice in investing in ExTe's timber bunks and tensioners. When you are then welcomed by happy and committed ExTe employees there is an excellent and almost exhilarated atmosphere. In this positive environment ExTe presented a number of new products in the usual order. A new D series, TU Remote and the brand-new

An interesting observation was that the optimisation of bunks for increased profitability has started to have a big impact. The vast majority of questions from visitors in fact concerned ExTe's optimisation guide. It was interesting and fantastic that so many people understand the connection between ExTe's wide range and their own profitability. Because that's exactly what it is all about. A wide range is a prerequisite as regards optimising the profitability of your own timber transportation.

For many people the Wood Transportation Expo was the first time after the pandemic outbreak when you could talk to both ExTe staff and colleagues face to face. An abundance of thoughts and ideas were tossed to and fro.

Here he and his son Gustav, who also drives for the haulage company, is being helped by ExTe’s Jörgen Norberg with the ordering of locking pins, slider brackets and wedges. Anders was one of the first to realise the volume advantages of the S 10 bunk. But he is also keen on D 12 bunks, and wants to achieve a load height of 3.40 metres on his 74-tonne timber rig.

S-bunks and withdrawal units

The withdrawal unit makes it easier to access the hook with the gripper in order to place the loop over the stack when it is to be tightened. 

Anders Johansson, to the right of the picture, is a timber haulier from Alfta. Together with his friend Mikael Johansson, he discussed S-bunks and withdrawal units for his new vehicle with ExTe’s Roger Larsson.

It is a 74-tonne timber rig that Anders has invested in. The vehicle has four axles and four S 7 bunks.

“I want to invest in volume and a good load height,” he explains. Anders is critical of the way the discussion of the road network’s viability is being conducted. Feels like a lot of politics – where you can and can’t drive.

Every time we listen to timber hauliers and drivers, a new creative environment is conjured up. We know what you are talking about, and you know best what is required so timber transportation works well.

With our bunks and tensioners on your timber rig you have a good starting point. But don’t think we’re relinquishing all responsibility for it. We and our service partners will be with you throughout the journey.

Our service partners act as hubs for all timber hauliers in the area. They give you proximity to both service and spare parts, and are updated regarding the latest and most effective solutions for safe and efficient load-securing.

“One of our service partners in the north is Björnavagnar i Björna,” says Jörgen Norberg, an ExTe salesman. And there are a number of other ones: Inlandsfrakt in Åsele, Däckab in Sveg, Kurts traktor & Maskin in Iggesund and Rolf Eriksson in Mora. I can almost promise there will be a few more before the end of the year. “There are actually quite a few hauliers who call and ask where in the vicinity they can get hold of spare parts,” says Jörgen.

Positive reactions from customers Björnavagnar exhibited at the Wood Transportation Expo. Site manager Fredrik Karlsson was there together with an employee, Fredrik Jonsson.

“We are after all both body builders, and have our own designs, including a crane stand, hydraulic tanks and our own trailers. We also build the timber frame,” Fredrik Karlsson explains. “Jörgen asked us if we could imagine being a service partner for ExTe. We of course said yes. ExTe is after all our biggest product group alongside our own products. We also have room for a wide-ranging stock of spare parts on our premises. Our shop always used to be good, but we’ve now redone it, and achieved a better structure. Customers’ reactions have all been positive. They often call and place an order, and it’s then good to have the products on our premises,” says Fredrik.

In the southern parts of the country Micke Deemus is in full swing signing agreements with new service partners. In mid-September matters were settled with Hejca AB in Eksjö.

A lot of people in our area have ExTe’s timber banks bunks and tensioners. I see being a service partner for ExTe as an excellent service for customers. We were already selling a lot of ExTe products. We have now built up a bigger stock. It is in fact already noticeable that this has created additional sales. “We have above all been working in the field of load changers, but want to get into forestry more,” says Henrik.

New service partner Söderstens Rep AB in Kolsva is a new ExTe service partner. They above all do customisation of timber trucks and load changers, as well as repairing and servicing trailers.

“But we also have a forestry haulier with 11 trucks,” says Göran Södersten.

For us, becoming a service partner when asked by ExTe was a no-brainer. When it comes to timber bunks and tensioners with all the accessories, it is above all ExTe products that customers want. “We always want to give customers the service and the products they want,” says Göran.

Completely satisfied with TU Remote Andreas Söderqvist from Idre demonstrated the refinements and all the benefits of TU Remote. “We’ve had TU Remote for a year, and it works superbly,” says Andreas.

Like most forestry drivers, Söderqvist has not noticed the pandemic much.

“We drive to Fiskarheden, Siljan, Blyberg and the timber terminal Lomsmyren in Mora. We’ve had our work cut out,” says Andreas.

“When ExTe asked if I wanted to be there at the trade fair and show the system, I of course agreed. A lot of trade-fair visitors were interested in how the remote control worked. Many of them were probably a bit surprised how simple and easy it is.”

Together with his father Roger Söderqvist, Andreas drives their timber rig.

“We’ve had TU tensioners for a while, and they work very well. TU Remote made it even easier. We’re very happy with this system, and don’t want anything else,” says Andreas.

“Despite our being in areas close to the mountains, with a lot of snow and sometimes very cold weather, we’ve very rarely had any problems with straps freezing. We always put on new straps in preparation for the winter. They’re treated to resist moisture. It’s a negligible cost. Straps that have been around for a while can be left as spares,” Andreas explains.

Several new features for Com 90

At ExTe's Com 90 demo point Ulf Gustafsson from Skåpafors Skogstransporter demonstrated functions and new features of Com 90. Ulf has now been using Com 90 for 12 years.

“I’m very pleased. With the short runs I do there’s nothing that can compare to Com 90.”

And the system is constantly developing, becoming ever easier to handle. It’s quite simply the market's state-of-the-art loadsecuring system.

“Quite a few visitors were interested in how everything works.

Com 90 now has a new control system with new upgraded hardware and software, plus a clear, modern colour display,” Ulf explains.

Remote demonstrations Jenny Eklund, who was responsible for both the Com 90 and TU Remote demonstrations, was pleased with the visitors' interest.

“I think it’s wonderful that hauliers who actually have the equipment are also displaying it and saying how it works. It perhaps feels more credible than if any of us ExTe sellers were to be standing there.

“Be it Com 90 or TU Remote, there’s no equivalent on the market. The systems are totally superior to everything else in terms of safety, the work environment, simplicity and speed,” says Jenny.

Mats Berglind’s haulage company in Kölsillre, near Östavall has five trucks.

He thought they were interesting systems.

“The contacts with ExTe and Jenny are working very well. I’m getting great service,” says Mats.

Nils Nilsson came from Västerbotten with one of his drivers, Jonas Lidén.

Nils is a haulier, and runs Henry Nilsson's Åkeri with its four trucks.

“We only have ExTe on our timber rigs,” he says.

On one of the trucks he also has TU tensioners, and thinks the air-controlled release mechanisms work well.

“But you could probably invest in a Com 90 or TU Remote for me,” says Jonas, laughing.

“No, I have to think about your health too – you need to get some exercise,” Nils responds.

“But joking aside, they’re certainly interesting systems,” says Nils.

The new Conical rationalises stanchion management

A completely new D-series When ExTe's D-bunks were first launched they were by far the lightest combination bunks on the market.

The low weight is also repeated in the new D-series. Bunk frames made of high-strength steel and aluminium stanchions create a low weight together with smart design solutions.

This means the haulier can get more timber into each load.

The big news is that the base of the bunk frame is now serrated, thereby simplifying things and making assembly faster.

The bunk frame engages with the brackets’ serrations. You no longer need to drill into the upper parts in order to fit the bunk frame to the framework of the truck or the trailer. The ignition furthermore eliminates the risk of the bunk slipping laterally in the event of severe stress.

The Conical stanchions have hitherto been bevelled either on the inside (the load-facing side) or on the outside.

The new Conical stanchion is bevelled towards the top of the stanchion both on the inside and the outside. The bevelling on the inside means that slightly more wood can be loaded, and that unloading at the timber reception point is easier. The bevelling on the outside minimises the risk of exceeding the maximum permissible load width in the event of a full load.

For hauliers with several timber rigs, and for body builders and our service partners, stocking of stanchions is more rational, as two stanchions become one. The same stanchion is also suitable for both D- and A-bunks.

Attachment of the new Conical stanchion to the stanchion sleeve uses the same simple, straightforward solution as before.

A smart detail on the stanchions is the arrow markings, which are visible from the crane cab. The distance between the arrows is 35 cm, making it easier to assess whether the timber diameter is too big.

It will also be easier to load flat timber and avoid sloping timber.

ExTe's wide range of stanchions also includes telescopic stanchions, which can be raised and lowered, as well as Euro stanchions, which are available in several models and are adapted to different load heights.

The Heavy Duty (HD) is an extremely tough support bunk.

The HD is our strongest support bunk, and is made of highstrength steel and hardened steel. It can withstand really rough treatment, e.g. lifting in it when you need to move the trailer.

The purpose of protective support bunks is to protect the frame when the wood is unloaded. The support bunk is available in two versions: straight or angled for mounting on a truck or trailer.

Wear-resistant steel on the top makes the bunks highly durable.

The bunks are mounted quickly and easily using clamping or friction brackets, and no welding or drilling is required. Grooves and serrations make it easy to adjust to different frame widths.

The bunks have pre-drilled holes and attachment points for rapid fitting of accessories, and are also prepared for sliding frame attachments. Ready-painted on delivery in accordance with the customer's wishes.

Optimisation Andreas Nyqvist, JRV Åkeri and Ingemar Andersson, Fjäls Åkeri, from Frösön and Fjäl near Östersund respectively, received a review of optimisation by ExTe's marketing manager Jocke Eriksson.

The bunks' weight versus the volume of load they hold is of course important. Ingemar Andersson had thoughts on how to include D 12 bunks in the frame of a truck. There is a lot to think about when it comes to optimising transportation profitability. It is not enough just to have a bunk that lasts.

Jocke Eriksson explained possible approaches depending on average transportation distances and the type of timber.

In ExTe's Optimisation Guide he showed how hauliers can improve their profitability by choosing the right combinations of bunks.

TU Remote makes the job easier, safer and less tiring.

The TU tensioners, with both automatic retightening and unlimited tensioning length, are adapted for a wide area of use.

Be it round timber, sawn timber, pulp bales or other bulky mixed cargo, there is a TU solution.

Information box • TU Remote is one of the latest stages of ExTe's continuous product development, which has been in progress for more than 120 years.

• Until the mid-80s the focus was above all on making timber bunks more straightforward, safer and more profitable for timber hauliers.

• Development of bunks led to ExTe becoming the leading player in the industry. Since then ExTe has worn the yellow jersey with great success.

• More stringent demands for a better working environment for drivers gradually arose. When the first hook was launched ExTe coined the phrase ‘stop throwing chains’.

• Over the years ExTe's success created resources and new opportunities to invest in even more secure loadsecuring systems. Com 90, development of which started in the 90s, is an example of ExTe's unique ability to think in new directions.

• On most of ExTE's markets Com 90 is now an established system. The driver controls the bunks and load-securing using a remote control. This provides almost unbeatable advantages as regards the work environment, ergonomics, safety and efficiency.

2 You activate the system at the touch of a button on the remote control.

On the remote control you can select whether you want to communicate with the truck or the trailer.

3 In normal mode TU pulls regardless of whether you are driving with or without a load. The reason why TU pulls even when you are driving without a load is that the strap reel must keep the strap on the drum.

TU includes a number of smart accessories that make the driver's work safer and easier.

With a remote control the driver can operate the tensioners from the cab or at a safe distance from the timber rig. With a simple push of a button you release the loop, start or stop the winding and disengage. Easier, safer, less tiring and quicker.

With TU Remote the tensioner gets close to all the benefits provided by the Com 90 system.

TU Remote gives you maximum security When the load is to be unloaded the driver does not have to walk around the timber rig to release the tension. This can be done from the cab or from a safe distance. One push of a button on the remote control suffices. The winding of the loop starts automatically. If the driver observes a proper distance from the stacks there is almost zero risk of his being hit by a fragment being pulled away from the stack by the loop.

TU Remote saves your body The remote control automatically reduces physical strain and the risk of load and wear injuries with increasing age. This is maybe not something you think about when you are young, but there will be damage if it is not prevented.

TU Remote good for your work environment On a nice, warm summer’s day it feels great stepping out of the cab and strolling round the timber rig when you have loaded the timber and are about to tension, or when you are about to unload. But on a winter’s day when it’s 20 degrees below zero, how does it feel to trudge through a couple of decimetres of fresh snow or slide around on smooth ice? With the remote control you don’t have to leave the cab more than necessary, but you must always ensure that the load is safe for the road. When loading you can go straight up into the crane cab. When you have finished loading you must of course put the loop in the release mechanisms before the tensioner is put into operating mode and is started.

TU Remote reduces time pressure Although the time-saving should not be exaggerated, the various stages of loading and unloading are faster with TU Remote.

Studies show a time-saving of 65-70 hours a year. Best-case scenario: time that reduces stress at work.

When you are ready to leave you press ‘Start’. The tensioners feed in any slack and then tighten up the load. During the journey to the unloading site the tensioners are always in operation, and post-tension the load as required.

At the unloading site you trigger the release mechanisms, which at the same time depressurise the tensioners for a few seconds. This is to avoid the straps coming loose with full force. The operating pressure to the tensioner is automatically reset, and the loop automatically rolls up on the drum.

“It’s above all the bunks in the D-series that are very popular,” ExTe’s Ingemar Larsson explains.

“Even though some customers say they’re expensive, they think the price is more than offset by both the quality and the low weight.

“As usual, there was great interest in our products at this year's EKO-LAS trade fair in Motski. Many people have missed both the fair and us during the pandemic. There are normally about 7,000 visitors, but this year there were around 8,500. They were good visitors, and it was a great fair for us.

“We were well represented at the fair by our partners MHS, Hydrofast and Hydrog.”

ExTe has received a big order for 12-tonne bunks for New Zealand.

The bunks are to be mounted on new bogie trailers. KiwiRail is not a new customer of ExTe. On the contrary, since 2011, 570 trailers have already been equipped with ExTe’s 12-tonne bunks.

“It’s no exaggeration to say that the collaboration has been flawless and trusting,” says Owe Ljunghammer who is responsible for ExTe's sales of railway products.

New Zealand is a pretty big forestry country with a great need for transportation by both road and rail. A great deal of timber is transported from the forest to timber terminals, where transportation continues by rail. The final destination is often one of the ports, whence the timber is shipped to China, India and other destinations.

The crucial factors determining railway customers’ choice of ExTe are the same as for road transportation: high quality, strength, low weight and maximum load area. Once things have got going we can start a more detailed dialogue with the potential customer. The trajectory towards the goal can then some-

times be both difficult and time-consuming. A processing period of anything from three months to five years until the deal is clinched can in fact be considered normal,” says Owe Ljunghammer.

And that is where ExTe's other strengths come into play.

We have a supportive and professional organisation behind us, and understand handling, e.g. wood density, marking lengths and machine types at the terminals.

We also have the cutting-edge expertise required in the field of railways, where there is an abundance of different trailer-frame types, load profiles, axle loads etc.

We are also persistent. In the field of railways, as stated above, it normally takes a long time to get from initial dialogue to manufacture.

ExTe's vision clearly shows where we are heading and why, plus what we need to do to realise the vision. On one of the final days of August ExTe held a Vision Day for all its employees.

ExTe's CEO and owner Kjell Jonsson began by praising all the employees. “It’s to your credit that in the middle of an extreme pandemic we’ve succeeded in keeping the business going and creating both sales and results in excess of my expectations. This shows teamwork at its best,” says Kjell Jonsson.

“If we continue in this vein we all have a great journey ahead of us. There’s great potential for our products on markets worldwide. We have all the opportunities, and we will grow,” Kjell Jonsson said.

ExTe’s CEO Kjell Jonsson began the vision day by praising the staff.

Site manager Lina Bylund explained the content of ExTe's target position.

Courage is an important value at ExTe. You sometimes end up biting off more than you can chew.

“I also want to say that we’ve put Ygskorset on the map and that’s where we intend to stay. There’s every reason for us all to be proud of what we’ve achieved.

“We’ve got a strong business idea, based on us understanding our customers, what they need and how we can present solutions to satisfy them. We also have clear goals and a great deal of ambition,” Kjell Jonsson explained, summing up ExTe's vision for 2025 with the words "We secure cargos worldwide."

One of our most important strategies for attainment of our goals is dedicated employees. The prerequisite for this dedication is everyone realising how their particular job contributes to joint overall goals. The vision day is part of that work.

“Despite our being the world's leading player when it comes to securing timber loads, huge markets remain unprocessed,” says ExTe's site manager Lina Bylund.

In one of the competitions you really had to watch your step. The highest wood stack won.

A bit wobbly, maybe. ExTe's salesman Jörgen Norberg follows his teammates' efforts with a degree of concern. And with pretty good reason, we can reveal. But that's another image.

The winning team were clearly satisfied with their performance. Another team – one not tipped to win – was heard muttering.

“We’re working hard on attaining our target position, namely ExTe being every haulier’s first choice.

During the day it was much more than visions that were presented. In groups, the employees were given brief presentations by those responsible for the various operations.

At each station there were also competitions to test cooperation for the good of the team. Or what about biting off more than you can chew! Standing in a row, the first person fills a bucket with water, then lifts it over their head to the person behind them. The last person in the line fills a barrel. The team with the most water in their barrel wins. Many drenched laughs were guaranteed.

A rewarding and much-appreciated day ended with a barbecue together.

Olle Nyman, the new head of ExTe's design department.

After upper secondary technical school and civilian service, Olle began his professional life at Ericsson in Gävle. “I pretty soon got into project management, and stayed there for nine years. I then went to PeGes in Färila as a design manager. But after three years operations in Färila ceased. I was left wondering what to do.

I thought ‘Why not buy your own bowling alley!’.

No sooner said than done. A friend and I ran the bowling alley in Ljusdal for three years. It meant a lot of work, but it was great fun. We also really got to learn all about entrepreneurship. Good experience to have under your belt,” says Olle.

I then spent some time in Gävle again, first at Syntronic.

“I was involved in many exciting projects. They included making a transceiver that communicated with pacemakers. As from 2008 I was back at Ericsson as project manager. I stayed there until they closed down. I then went on to the consultancy Etteplan.

I was there for seven years, and was hired as a project manager for Sandvik, Gävle Energi, Forsmark, ABB and other companies.

In 2017 I applied to Huddig in Hudiksvall. I was a project manager there too, being responsible for development of their hybrid backhoe loader TIGON.

“And now I'm here at ExTe. What I bring to the job is my long experience of project management and project governance. It's about planning, prioritising, reporting and achieving goals. We have listen to what our customers want, and need to satisfy their wishes. I’m both clear and responsive in my leadership, and usually find it easy to get employees on my side. You might well call it adapted leadership.

Privately, Olle is a pretty fit 51-year-old with a wife and two grown-up sons.

“My wife and I are often out in our caravan. In the summer we drive around, and in the winter we stop somewhere suitable near to the mountains. This year it’ll be Lofsdalen. But we won’t be doing downhill skiing. We’ll usually be going on longish or shortish trips by snowmobile. Ultimately it's always the coffee basket that’s the big draw – and the kolbulle pancakes. The attraction of coffee isn’t that strange. Because Olle's wife is a certified coffee taster. Good if you get a surprise visit.
