It’s full speed ahead in the business, both in production and in our markets.

The cranes have long since passed over us in Färila, making their way to warmer latitudes. First you hear the sound, then you see them, high up in the sky. It really is with a degree of melancholy that you look up at the formations of maybe 30-40 gigantic birds. They signal the approach of autumn, and it is now here - no doubt about it.

But I would of course still like to summarise my impressions from the Mittia Wood Transportation Expo held on 16-17 August.

For our part, I can simply confirm that it was a great success. As usual, I would add. Of all the timber rigs within in the exhibition area, only a few were not fitted with ExTe’s bunks and tensioners. It somehow reflected what the market in Sweden is like.

Timber hauliers and drivers may be tough characters, but they have big hearts. We received plenty of praise and very few grumbles. On those occasions when problems do arise, we deal with them in a way that our customers like. We want them to feel both peace of mind and safety in their relationship with us.

A haulier who has invested in our products must feel that they have done the right thing.

The trade fair was also an excellent opportunity for our latest employees on the marketing side and Technical Support to meet many of our customers and create contacts.

Our biggest new product at the fair was of course the new A-Series bunks. They were very well received.

I understand why. We currently have the lightest bunks in the market, making it possible for hauliers to improve their own profitability.

We are still working flat out in the business, both in production and out in all the markets where we operate. Our staff do an amazing job, and I am really 2 | ExTe Magazine

proud of them. Together we put a lot of effort into dealing with the high demand for our products.

At the same time, we must also refine all the ideas from hauliers and drivers in the ongoing product development process.

In addition, our salespeople and Technical Support have to do their jobs out with our customers.

We are now investing even more in increasing our availability in the market.

Although there is currently some talk of a slowdown and falling demand in the global market, we do not yet see any trends indicating that a decline is on the way for our part.

The forest industry in Sweden has increased its production capacity by 10%. Even if the economy slows down, there will still be a significant need for timber. This should reasonably mean that timber hauliers do not need to feel overly concerned about the future. Rather the opposite.

Alternative areas of application are constantly being developed for wood.

Have a nice autumn, and I will see you out in the field.

We’re investing in increased production, says Lina Bylund, new Site Manager.

Just over one month ago, Lina Bylund was HR, Quality and Marketing Manager at ExTe. Lina is now handing over the role of Marketing Manager to Joakim Eriksson and quality-related issues to Maria Thor, as she becomes Site Manager at ExTe, which means responsibility for day-to-day operations and the continued development of the business. In addition to being Site Manager, Lina will also continue to be HR Manager at ExTe. Product development and production really are the heart of the company. We have high-quality products and a strong position in the market. We experienced this very tangibly significantly for the whole of last year, and it is being maintained. For us in production, it’s about keeping up and having the capacity to meet the strong increase in demand. Not only do we need to crank up production capacity, we also need to improve some of our internal processes, confirms Lina.

At the moment we are planning for which investments we need to implement in the next few years, and this autumn we will be installing a new welding robot. Our sales forecast also suggests that we may need to hire a number of new employees to meet this high demand.

It feels very stimulating for me personally. We have strong faith in the future, and our workforce is incredibly ambitious. I have a strong belief that all employees must be involved in the way the business develops and be clear about which goals the company wants to achieve. Then you are happier at work, feel engagement and want to do a good job. We have therefore already introduced a routine of short, ­concentrated meetings every morning so that everyone knows the situation and we can take quick, joint decisions if emergency measures or adjustments are needed, explains Lina.

ExTe’s success both in the Nordic region and in markets around the world continues. Right now, demand for ExTe’s products is beating all the records. As the expansion progresses, the company’s organisation is being further developed both in production and on the marketing side.

Joakim Eriksson is the new Marketing Manager. Timber transportation is in his blood. His father Karl-Erik was a forest haulier, and so was Joakim. He also has many years of experience from both the world of equipment installers and the heavy goods vehicle industry. He has also spent just over a year working as Export Manager within the Extendo Group, of which ExTe is a part.

“I can say it really was buzzing on our stand at the Mittia Wood Transportation Expo in August.

We had so many visitors to the stand that it was difficult to find time to speak to everyone”, says Joakim.

Our new lighter A-Series bunks were popular and obviously generated lots of questions. Depending on the nature of the haulier’s transport operations, profitability can be improved using different kinds of bunks. ExTe’s concept is to offer bunks for all kinds of transport assignments. Some people might like to think that one single product can meet all needs.

In reality that’s not possible, explains Joakim. It is no coincidence that we have, for example, S-Series, D-Series and A-Series bunks, not to mention the Com 90 bunks. We have a wide range of products to suit all kinds of transport operations.

For ExTe, having a market presence close to their customers has always been a success factor.

“It’s given us unique opportunities to create trust and good relationships. Above all, it’s meant that we’ve picked up lots of good ideas and views from timber hauliers, drivers and equipment installers”, says Joakim. “Now we’re putting a greater focus on 4 | ExTe Magazine

contacts with our customers. In the Nordic region we’ll be looking to collaborate with other actors in the industry so that we can coordinate customer activities where possible. Whatever happens, you’ll be gradually seeing more of us. But don’t let that stop you from making your own contact with us”, says Joakim.

Exports account for 75% of our business.

In the global markets, it is more about our being better at supporting our distributors.

We will also be appointing more distributors who know both the language and the culture in the different markets.

The new A-Series bunks were the big news at the fair.

The load capacity in tonnes of the bunks has been changed to better suit the needs of timber hauliers. They are now both stronger and lighter than before.

With their load capacity of 5, 7 and 10 tonnes, there are no lighter bunks available in the market.

Naturally, all timber hauliers want to get as much as possible from each load. When the time comes to choose new timber bunks, as a timber haulier you should ask yourself a few questions.

Because the answers will provide an indication of which bunk combinations will best meet the needs and make the greatest contribution to the haulier’s profitability.

Transport distance, range and timber lengths and how many loads per year are all important factors. Also - how often are the stacks on the rig full up to the very tops of the stakes? Probably not very often. This can be an indication that the rig’s bunks are too heavy in relation with the load you can carry. The lighter A-Series bunks should make it possible to increase your load capacity in weight and thereby your revenue.

With the right combination of new A-Series bunks, you can load up to 220 kg more on a rig with ten bunks in all. All alternatives allow the rig to load more timber and thus increase the haulier’s profitability.

Good sales in Norway

Morek in Norway is an important distributor for ExTe. At the trade fair were Peter Fallkvist, Morek’s representative in Sweden, together with Sten Haraldsen and Ole Jonny Langeland from Morek Norway.

We’ve seen a healthy upturn in sales of ExTe ­products during the year, they reported.

Perfect tensioners Frank Korntorp, FR Transport AS in Flisa, Norway, was very interested in the pneumatic release mechanism for the TU ­tensioners. Mounted here on the new, lighter A7 bunk.

Mattias Johansson, who usually drives a Com 90 rig with HiVision, explained and showed how it works.

“I have a timber truck and had Luftman tensioners for 13 years and now TU tensioners. They work perfectly. As long as you just have them serviced on an ongoing basis, there are no problems”, says Frank. “On my next rig I’ll be supplementing the TU tensioner with a pneumatic release mechanism.

That will be easier to operate and safer.”

We checked out Hibbes Transport Three living billboards paid a call to ExTe’s stand.

“The thing is to market the haulage company”, says Jonas Hillbom of the name Hibbes Åkeri.

The name had been around for many years, so it made sense to call the business Hibbes Åkeri, which is based in Karlholmsbruk in Northern Uppland.

Together with his driver Jim Olsson (or “the farmhand”, as he calls himself) and fellow haulier Mikael Kjetselberg, Skärplinge Åkeri, they were checking out ExTe’s new offerings.

We have a lot of work with storm-felled timber.

The last storm blew down the equivalent of the ­annual cut for 5-6 years. It is mainly timber for BillerudKorsnäs and Mellanskog.

The bunks on the rig are, of course, from ExTe. There are S10 and A10 bunks on one rig and A9 and A10 bunks on the other.

“They’ve worked well all the time, and if you need anything you can get hold of it quickly. Not only do the bunks work well, we also like the design of ExTe’s products.”

“Farmhand” Jim Olsson has been transporting timber for ten years. We have TU tensioners with pneumatic release mechanisms. It’s easy to operate and safe, believes Jim. I really enjoy the work, even though there are some odd working hours. But that’s offset by the freedom you have, to be your own boss and go to many different places.

The King is back It would not be a Wood Transportation Expo without an appearance from Norway’s self-proclaimed Timber King.

Odd Anders Saeter is an obvious and very welcome visitor to ExTe’s stand. Always in a good mood and with plenty of opinions. When it comes to his views on ExTe and our products, the photo says it all.

ExTe was early with designs in aluminium Two men who have been around for a long time are the haulier Kenneth Pettersson from Hällefors and entrepreneur Peder Holmström, Stockholm. The common denominator is that they are both well acquainted with Kjell Jonsson.

Kenneth is a breath of fresh air in a haulage context.

Never afraid to express his opinions. He has had both bouquets and brickbats for ExTe, but has always used ExTe’s equipment. “For as long as they’ve been around”, claims Kenneth. Although he is not actually that old.

ExTe is now in its 121st year.

Peder Holmström came into contact with ExTe and Kjell Jonsson in the late 1980s.

“I was running a company in the field of engineering.

Among other things, we had contracts with the Swedish Defence Matériel Administration (FMV). They were very interested in solutions featuring light weights. I went along on a trip organised by the Development Fund in Stockholm. We visited engineering workshops in the Ljusdal area. That’s when I met Kjell and realised that they were on to something new and interesting, namely designs in aluminium. The timing was just right. We started a collaboration, one feature of which was that the manufacturing of superstructures was subcontracted to ExTe. In aluminium on tracked transporters for FMV. Another thing we appreciated was their procedures for testing prototypes”, says Peder.

Perfect handling of complaints

As we didn’t know what the loads would be, we have both 4-axle and 5-axle trailers, explains Tom Hedström from Bispgården.

“We have 11 timber rigs, and they are fitted only with ExTe bunks, including S10 bunks. We have group driving, so the loading can get a bit rough sometimes. But if anything breaks, ExTe is quick to replace it. The way they handle complaints is perfect”, thinks Tom. Both Daniel Bergvall (on the left of Tom) and Malin Kangaasharju (on the right) are drivers at the haulage firm.

“I really enjoy it”, says Malin. “It can be hard work sometimes, but at the same time it’s really challenging.”

“Many of them are of course interested in our products, not least the new A-Series, and the opportunities it gives hauliers to improve their profitability. But just as often, discussions are about how their business is going”, says Torbjörn. “I’ve been working for ExTe for just over a year, and I realise that the social contact and feeling of togetherness are just as important as the products. Our job as salespeople is just as much about

making hauliers and drivers feel at home with ExTe as talking about products. Most people already know what they are going for, and they feel happy about it”, explains Torbjörn.

A team with faith in the future

Römskog Timber Transporter AS has its registered office just a few kilometres from the border in Norway. The proximity to Sweden, and Värmland in this case, means that they have several Swedish drivers. The haulage company has five timber trucks. And they all have ExTe bunks, both A5 and A9.

They also have TU tensioners.

“Works well, according to the drivers.” Manager Björn Erik Unneberg is slightly concerned that the economic downturn being spoken of is becoming a self-fulfilling prophecy.

But apart from that, they are an optimistic bunch. Sure there might be a downturn, but it will probably be short-lived. We’ve experienced fluctuations in the past. Yet we’re still here.

It’s very evident that the guys are satisfied with ExTe’s products. But there is one thing they would like to change: the stake guard, which comes loose after a while.

“You’ll have to come up with something new and better”, says Björn Erik. Roger Larsson, the man responsible for ExTe’s product development, nods and makes a note.

“We have solutions under way”, he says.

A little history

Robin McGougan, from ExTe’s Development Department, was given a short history lesson by Lennart Forslund and Rune Halvarsson. Lennart has a general interest in forest transportation, but has not driven himself. While Rune, from Ytterhogdal, was driving a timber truck until the day he retired.

“It was a tough job. Nothing like it is today. No aids to help you. We used to tie with a top chain, and you had to climb up on the load to be able to link the chains together.

Totally unthinkable today. When the top chain disappeared, we had to throw the chain over the load. There was no other option. But there’s one thing we were one of the first to do – group driving”, recounts Rune.

An amazing trade fair, was the general view of the ExTe team. More visitors than in previous years and the ExTe stand was full virtually all the time.

Although the exhibition area had been generously expanded, there were people everywhere. And most of them ended up on the ExTe stand sooner or later.

At least those with a link to forest transportation.

You could tell that the trade fair is a Nordic affair.

You didn’t need to walk too many metres to hear both Norwegian and Finnish.

It’s great that the trade fair has such a good, solid reputation, and really good for ExTe because this is our home ground.

There was a great atmosphere on the ExTe stand.

All generations of hauliers and drivers congregated, had lots of questions about products and put forward opinions.

“It’s simply the case that all the ideas, suggestions and feedback we receive form the basis of our product development. The hauliers and drivers really kick-start the adrenaline in us, and then it just takes off”, says Roger Larsson, Product Development Manager. But the question is whether the sense of community that ExTe creates isn’t every bit as important. That feeling of having chosen the right products and having it confirmed in contacts with both ExTe people and colleagues is important. Or as ExTe’s CEO Kjell Jonsson put it: “We listen to the hauliers and create both peace of mind and safety for them. The social contact is every bit as important as having the best products.”

Rikard and Joakim Edström came from Edströms Åkeri in Åsele. They naturally took the opportunity to have a chat with ExTe’s Jörgen Norberg.

“We’ve got a new rig on the way, and we want S10 bunks for it”, they explained.

A really positive spirit, thought Jörgen “I’ve been to the Wood Transportation Expo before and seen that there were always a lot of people on ExTe’s stand. This year was the first time I was there as an ExTe employee”, says Jörgen.

“It was a bit different, seeing everything from the inside.

A great number of people wanting to talk to me. Unfortunately, I probably didn’t manage to say hello to everyone I’d intended to.

“One thing I noticed was that ExTe’s customers would happily stay on the stand to chat both with us and with colleagues.

They seemed to be happy there.”

“For me, as a newcomer, it was a lot about selling myself, making that first contact with hauliers and drivers.”

“There were quite a few people checking out ExTe’s TL tensioner. It’s an amazing little tensioner, simple and protected inside its frame. It also tightens 25 cm when the stacks settle during transport. Absolutely one of the best alternatives in the market for those who do not want more sophisticated solutions and accessories.”

In early June, Jörgen Norberg spent his first days as a salesperson at ExTe. “Since then it’s been full speed ahead”, says Jörgen. With responsibility for the northern part of Sweden and also Finland, there are many customers and long distances to travel.

Accompanied by ExTe’s distributor in Germany, Richard Morath, the visitors were Dr Robert Seeger and Mr Johan Schuster from MAN in Munich.

We showed and explained how production takes place”, recounts Joakim Eriksson, Marketing Manager at ExTe. I think they were actually impressed by the breadth of our range, especially the fact that for each product there are so many performance steps, such as the different weight classes of the bunks.

Our job is to make things easy for production “It’s my responsibility is to make sure that our properties work”, says Lasse Forslin, new Maintenance Manager at ExTe. Together with two caretakers and two cleaners, he takes care of ongoing daily maintenance.

But we also spend a lot of time on preventive measures. That keeps down costs down in the long run”, explains Lasse.

“Our job is largely about avoiding disruption in production. It might be, for example, looking after electrical systems or the ventilation, to name a couple of important things.”

“Today we’ve just changed all the air filters. The supply air filter is replaced a couple of times a year, while the filter for the extractor is replaced three or four times a year, depending on how much welding is going on. It’s just as important that we not only have fresh air inside the premises, but also that we minimise emissions”, says Lasse.

Lasse Forslin was well-known in ExTe when he started in his new job in early August. He had been working for several years since 2004 with his own company as an electrician at ExTe. 14 | ExTe Magazine

“In time, I felt that I wanted to try something else, and that’s how it came about”, confirms Lasse. “I was familiar with ExTe after all those years, and they knew me. You could say that neither of us bought a pig in a poke.”

Lasse lives in Delsbo with his partner. The children have moved out.

“I don’t go hunting or fishing, but I love playing around with motors. Among other things I have a Cadillac, and that takes up quite a bit of my time”, says Lasse with a laugh.

Staffan Swahn new in Technical Support From nuclear power to ExTe. It might seem like a big jump. But not if you, like Staffan Swahn, live in Korskrogen, a village a few kilometres from Färila, and perhaps best known as a dancing metropolis when those of used aged around 70 were young.

Staffan has been working as mobile fitter since 2005.

“I started in nuclear power, then I moved to Norway where I was involved in building supply boats for the oil platforms. After almost two years I was back with nuclear power”, recounts Staffan.

“It was very much about planning and maintenance jobs you do once a year. With a very high level of safety awareness and a specific timeframe, it was an exciting challenge to put everything together, and to anticipate the problems that could arise. But there’s a time for everything.”

“It was actually by pure chance that I noticed that ExTe was looking for a Technical Support resource.

The job does involve a lot of travel, but I’m used to that. I’ve been given a thorough introduction and been out a lot with Micke Deemus, my colleague at Technical Support.”

“I’ve made the move from another industry, coming into this job with both eyes and ears wide open.

The contacts I’ve had so far with hauliers and equipment installers have been very positive.

My philosophy is that if you treat people well, you get it back in return”, says Staffan.

He has a great interest in vehicles.

“I’ve not driven a truck professionally, but I have the licences. I’m also extremely interested in anything powered by motors. It doesn’t really matter whether it’s a veteran moped, snowmobile, hobby car or an old excavator.”

“At the moment I’m renovating an old barn at home to create a garage. Once that’s done, there will probably be a new project on four wheels.

In this new job, it’s now all about settling in properly”, says Staffan. Getting out and meeting people, gaining experience. We work with planned maintenance, resolve any problems and listen to people’s views.

Strong position for ExTe in the UK Clarks Engineering, based in Dumfries in southwest Scotland, is a distributor for ExTe. Ingemar Larsson, salesperson at ExTe and Joakim Eriksson, ExTe’s new Marketing Manager, paid Clarks a visit in connection with a forest trade fair near Dumfries.

“Timber transports take place about fifty/fifty using tractor and trailer and semi-trailers”, explains Ingemar. The most common setup is 8-10 bunks per rig. The most popular are ExTe’s aluminium bunks, A5, and D5 with steel frames and aluminium stakes.

“There are about 600 timber rigs in the UK. Quite a lot, considering that the level of felling per year is a modest 10 million cubic metres. One reason for the high number of rigs is that the maximum total weight is 44 tonnes.

Furthermore, a lot of timber is imported from Russia and the Baltic states, and this has to be transported from the ports to industrial sites”, says Ingemar.

“We’ve been working with Clarks for many years and it works really well. They’ve gradually introduced ExTe to both hauliers and drivers, so we currently have a strong position in the UK”, says Ingemar.

At the trade fair, Annandale presented their new rig with 8 A5 bunks. The assembly was undertaken by JD Engineering, a major equipment installer. The driver who can be seen in the photo explained that the rig weighs 19 tonnes with a crane and can load about 25-26 tonnes of timber.

“We were invited on a guided tour of the James Jones sawmill in Lockerbie where, among others, the W. Nichols haulage firm and a couple of other rigs were being weighed in.”

New Zealand tests the Com 90 Mikael Deemus from ExTe’s Technical Support was in New Zealand at the end of August.

“It’s Evans Engineering – ExTe’s associate company – that wanted to test how the environment and the load affect Com 90 bunks.

I was there and helped with the installation”, explains Mikael.

There was a high level of interest from customers who went past Evans. A lot of people still throw chains and do tensioning manually here. They very soon realised the obvious advantages of Com 90 for both safety and a better work environment.

Right now there are more Com 90 bunks are on the way to New Zealand. They will be installed during the autumn for further testing during the autumn and winter.

“I travelled with Gordon, who is a customer at Evans and owns the haulage firm Rob Dahm LTD with 40 vehicles. The photo shows a so-called off-highway rig, which is allowed to load 90 tonnes.

Plenty of activity at

Mantorp “In our eyes, the trucking show at Mantorp was positive”, thinks Torbjörn Resvik, salesperson at ExTe. He was representing ExTe together with Marketing Manager Joakim Eriksson. There was plenty of activity on both Friday and Saturday, with a new visitor record of about 13.000 people.

“For us, Mantorp is ideal for reaching hauliers in the south east, whether they are transporting timber or general cargo.

We also have plenty of good solutions for securing loads other than timber. We made many good contacts with both large and small haulage firms. It is very clear that ExTe has a strong position in the minds of hauliers and drivers.”

It was also really nice to attend the Volvo FH16 Club barbecue event on the Friday. Really good to see very loyal customers of ExTe winning podium positions in “Sweden’s toughest FH16.” In second place was Eds Träfrakt in Nössemark, Dalsland and in third place was Björn Rikardsson, from BSR Transport in Lima, Dalarna.

We had such a good response that we’ll definitely be back next year, says Torbjörn.

Plenty of activity and lots of people when ExTe, together with Trux, participated in the Trailer Trucking Festival at Mantorp over the last weekend in August.

The ExTe Cup!!

One of the necessities of life, say those in the know. Being without a proper Bandy tournament in Ljusdal with its surroundings creates something of a collective abstinence.

As ExTe has the opportunity, they are stepping up for the region and joining forces with Ljusdals BK to create the new ExTe Cup. ExTe is the main sponsor this year as well with a high level of engagement. This year’s ExTe Cup takes place on 17-19 October. The real hardcore fans are counting down the days, hours and minutes. That’s what we call commitment.

Congratulations to the new European champion

In Sweden, we may not really understand how big rallycross is on the continent.

At the turn of the month August/September, the fifth stage of the Supercar tournament was held in Lohéac, France. 75,000 (!) spectators watched the races. JC Raceteknik with Robin Larsson headed straight to the top.

With three victories and a second place, Robin was well placed to bring home the European championship title.

With victory in the fifth stage of the competition, the title was decided even though there was still one stage left.
