WE KEEP ON BUILDING AT EXTE Summer is such a wonderful time. Being able to step outside wearing virtually nothing at all. For my part, summer now feels even more valuable. For whatever reason. But the summer isn’t just about lazy days.

There’s much to be done before the holiday period takes hold seriously and all the aromas from barbecues wafting like billowing waves across the country.

We’ve just taken part in trade fairs in Germany, France and Spain. A lot of people and tremendous interest in our products. And there are more trade fairs to come.

We’ve recently been preparing for Elmia Lastbil on 24-27 August. Take a look at our website to view the full calendar of trade fairs in which we will be taking part during the summer and autumn. A pretty hectic schedule. And always just as enjoyable and interesting to meet all the timber hauliers and drivers. So many good ideas and suggestions crop up over a cup of coffee or something else. Book an appointment at one of the trade fairs so that we can have a proper chat.

As there is a constant development and renewal of our products, this year too we will be able to present something new and fresh at Elmia Lastbil.

We can confirm that ExTe’s products are becoming increasingly popular all over the world. We see this at trade fairs, but we are also attracting a lot of attention in trade journals. As well as our quality and design, the way we think safe cargo securing is of interest. And we keep on building on this.

We have set out a long-term investment programme that aims specifically to further enhance quality and efficiency in our production. This summer we will launch the investments by renovating the lacquering plant. This should be operational by the end of the year, further enhancing the quality of our surface treatment.

Even though we’re now at the height of the summer, I’d like to send out a summer greeting to you all. And if you happen to be passing ExTe in Färila, you’re welcome to call in and say hello. We’ll provide the coffee.

A GOOD NEIGHBOUR IN THE WEST

Norway is a beautiful country.

Felling on steep terrain is an element of everyday life, as are demanding timber transport operations.

And at the heart of all this are all these cheerful Norwegians. We should be grateful to have such a good neighbour with all they have to offer. And it’s not just the Trollstigen mountain road, Hurtigrutten and “Rømmegraut” porridge. And we won’t even mention what happens in the wintertime.

This is what ExTe’s Jörgen Spring and Ulf Göransson experienced on their trip through Norway among timber hauliers and drivers. It all started in May at the Truck Meeting in Tretten in the Gudbrand Valley, above Lillehammer near Hafjäll. There were plenty of old and new vehicles and drivers.

“It was interesting to see how many Norwegian hauliers are actually one step ahead when to comes to the possibilities of using auto tensioners,” confirms Jörgen. “It wasn’t just timber trucks that were equipped. There were Luftman tensioners on flatbed trailers and the new TU tensioner on a woodchip rig.

There was a very good atmosphere, which only improved when we offered the guys some ExTe TU Irish. That went down well.”

The Norway trip moved further north on the E6 across fantastically attractive mountains to Levanger and a Truckstop at Norske Skog in Skong. This is the biggest mill in Norway, with a constant flow of vehicles around the clock. And they come from both Norway and Sweden.

“There’s no doubt that they enjoyed the visit from ExTe, and that wasn’t just because of the sausage and our famous soup,” says Jörgen. “There were a lot of people and a definite interest in the TU tensioner. We also took the opportunity to go on a drive with Ove Kenneth Haugen, who drives a Com 90 rig at Hernes Transport.

And it works well.

But unfortunately the fine timber load went as pulpwood.”

The trade fair in Lillestrøm has become a classic for ExTe. It is like Elmia, although a little smaller and with fewer visitors. ExTe’s dealer in Norway is Morek, and their stand naturally featured ExTe’s products. There were also pieces of ExTe equipment at OP Höglunds. And OP delivered a full rig with ExTe’s A-series bunks and TU tensioners to a customer during the event.

There is a high level of interest in TU tensioners in Norway, and not just for securing timber.

“We were asked lots of questions about the possibilities of using TU for other kinds of transport operations. Among others, there were questions about lashing both pipelines and concrete elements.”

The trip to Norway was rounded off by Hell’s World Rallycross Championship. The arena is nicely situated near the airport in Trondheim.

“We took a few local hauliers with us to experience the finals on Sunday. There was some good racing and Robin Larsson reached the semi-final,” explains Jörgen. “But then Robin experienced a hell in Hell. The servo gave up the ghost, making it far from easy to steer the car.”

Daniel Lundh reached the final in his class, where he finished fifth.

“But our Norwegian haulier friends enjoyed their day,” confirms Jörgen.

JAPAN

This photo makes it clear that flexibility is a keyword. Put a scoop on the loader and lift out the stakes from the forwarder and we open up new opportunities. Interesting.

FLEXIBILITY IN JAPAN Even if the loading capacity is not impressively high, the machine is ideally suited for the task of forwarding standard length timber.

Even though Japan is not one of the major forestry countries in the world, there is a well-developed forestry industry. Measured in financial terms, the value of production is just below 5% of GDP. Not that much, you might think. But in fact in this comparison they beat Sweden by a few tenths of a per cent.

ExTe is represented in Japan by Forest Technique Ltd, which is run by married couple Satoru and Naoko Kira.

As well as selling ExTe’s products in Japan, the company is also a forestry contractor.

When it comes to equipment on timber vehicles, and here there really are only trucks, no trailers, 90% are flatbed solutions. Fitted to the flatbed are bolsters, into which the stakes are inserted. This makes the vehicle more flexible for different kinds of transport operations.

One recent example of their flexible approach is what we would view as a slightly different kind of “forwarder”.

Forest Technique Ltd has fitted a newly designed, belt-driven machine with ExTe’s system, which includes flatbed bolsters and telescopic aluminium stakes. The machine has a loading capacity of 6,500 kg and can of course also be used in areas such as road-building.

HOT MACHINE DAYS IN KARLSKOGA The Skogsmaskindagarna event in Karlskoga is not just about harvesters and forwarders. An equally major topic is all kinds of timber transport.

It is evident that these days in early June generate interest. There were plenty of industry people, timber hauliers and drivers present.

And ExTe’s stand was of course a meeting place for everyone working with forest transport operations.

“There was a constant flow of cheerful hauliers, drivers and mechanics,” explain ExTe’s Jörgen Spring and Ulf Göransson.

“And it was really hot.”

Ingemar Aas, well-known timber haulier from Stöllet, paid a visit together with his wife. They also took the opportunity to buy ExTe’s Pink Ribbon.

Gransås Skog och Lantbruk with Per-Ove, Albin and Ann-Christin Johansson were given useful information by Ulf Göransson. The company, which is owned by the brothers Per-Ove, Ingmar and Åke, operates in the region between Växjö and Kalmar. The business carries out all kinds of rational forestry work including timber transport operations. The company is PEFC-certified. We’re now considering investing in a new truck, explains Per-Ove.

DEMO EQUIPMENT People are familiar with Series-A and Series-D bunks at the moment. But small changes and enhancements are being made all the time. The very latest versions will be on our stand. We also have the Series-S bunks, of course, with the wide internal dimensions. These bunks have a large loading area and are made entirely of steel. Our sales representatives on site can tell you more.

“Our new TU tensioners have a flexibility that we believe, and actually to some extent already know, can be both interesting and effective for many types of transport operations,” says Jörgen Spring, who is ExTe’s Trade Fair General at Elmia. “Even those who aren’t timber hauliers are welcome to come and have a chat with us. We’re open to all ideas and suggestions when it comes to the safe securing of cargo, including items other than timber. We’re already seeing what possibilities are becoming available to hauliers and their drivers.

OCEANIA

EXTE AT AUSTIMBER – OCEANIA’S BIGGEST FORESTRY TRADE FAIR The fair is held every four years and is the biggest of its kind in Oceania.

This year the fair was held in the south-eastern part of the country, in the city of Traralgon in the Latrobe region, about two hours east of Melbourne.

Visitors had an opportunity to test drive a fully loaded Scania rig on a test track.

The rig was fitted with both bunks and TU tensioners from ExTe.

The region is an important centre of the Australian forestry industry. Not many people live in the region, just over 125,000. But there’s all the more forest.

“Our dealers definitely chose a suitable name for their business – Forest Centre,” says Per Jonasson at ExTe. Over a couple of days, Forest Centre and ExTe presented the latest new products to the Australian market.

“People were especially interested in the TU tensioner. There are already a number of Australian hauliers who have fitted their rigs with the new tensioner. Some of them were actually there even when we started to test the TU,” says Per Jonasson.

“Many timber hauliers were also curious about a new version of the D10 bunks. They confirmed that the D10 bunks make it possible to further increase the net load.

“There was a constant stream of interested visitors to the stand, and both we and our dealers were satisfied with our days at the trade fair,” confirms Per Jonasson.

There was a high level of interest in the new D10 bunk. Here is Forest Centre’s Sales Manager Reymund Kell, explaining the possibilities of loading more timber when the rig is fitted with D10s.

POLAND

EXTE’S TIMBER BUNKS – A GOOD HABIT We have said this before, but it bears repeating. Poland is a really attractive market for ExTe, with positive, strong growth. ExTe’s high product quality is really making an impression on installers and timber hauliers in Poland.

ExTe benefits from a combination of high functionality and attractive design combined with low weights of the timber bunks. And once you’ve tried out ExTe’s products, you don’t really want to change. One of the bigger hauliers is Cicewiera Transport.

“The customer is very happy with ExTe,” confirms Ingemar Larsson, whose responsibilities include Poland. “At present the company has six aluminium trailers with D7 bunks. They also have a semi-trailer with S6 bunks and a few semi-trailers, trucks and trailers with E6 bunks and 144 bunks. And there are strong indications that we can expect more bunk deliveries,” says Ingemar.

EXTE’S BREADTH AND QUALITY MAKE THEIR MARK AT TRADE FAIRS

“Very good trade fairs,” confirms ExTe’s Ingemar Larsson about KWF in Germany and Forexpo in France.

“At the KWF fair in South Germany there were ExTe bunks and tensioners at no fewer than 98% of all timber trucks. That says a lot about ExTe’s very strong position in the German-speaking countries.”

KWF is a trade fair that mainly attracts industry people. Just over 50,000 visitors made their way around 551 exhibitors from 24 countries. Many of the exhibitors are both business partners and dealers for ExTe.

AUSTRIA

Ernst Riedler Junior, works at Ernst Riedler Fahrzeugbau, Oberweis, Austria. Ernst works in technical sales at the company. The company was founded in 1953 and was originally a forge. In 1990 the company was taken over by Ernst Senior, and they now have 50 employees. They build around 55 trucks and 60 trailers every year. 70-75% are timber trucks, 15% woodchip rigs and 10% dump trucks and special constructions.

FRANCE

Forexpo in Mimizan, France is also a large, important trade fair for ExTe. 400 exhibitors attracted 30,000 visitors. A good fair for ExTe with engaged dealers and installers.

WITH A COMPACT, SMART DESIGN, AUTOMATIC TENSIONING, UNLIMITED TENSIONER LENGTH, FLEXIBLE TENSIONING POWER AND NOT LEAST OF ALL A NEAT DESIGN, EXTE’S TENSIONERS HAVE BECOME POPULAR AMONG TIMBER HAULIERS ALL OVER THE NORDIC REGION. Smart fastenings make the tensioner easy to fit, even when it’s really cramped.

“Fitted with our pneumatic accessories, you can control the tensioners with a few simple presses of the button from the cab,” says Lennart Wallström, who is responsible for product development at ExTe. “When you want to unload the timber, you release the tensioner. If you have a strap and strap control, it’s rolled up automatically. There’s also corresponding pneumatic control for releasing the tensioner when it’s time to lash the cargo. So it’s entirely possible to have a fully automated system,” explains Lennart Wallström. “The benefits are obvious, Both lashing and unloading are fast and efficient.”

It’s also both safe and convenient for drivers.

It quite simply gives them a better, safer working environment.

Both timber and other bulky goods “Even when we started to design the new tensioner, it was part of our plans that the TU tensioner would also be suitable for lashing goods other than timber,” says Lennart Wallström. “And that’s how it’s turned out. Many hauliers in the Nordic region, and actually in Australia too, are carrying out large-scale tests in their transport operations.”

The most unusual cargo so far is probably when a haulier in Australia managed to effectively lash beehives using TU tensioners.

TU TESTS ON WOODCHIP RIG In Piteå one of the woodchip rig projects is under way at Sjöbergs Åkeri, who also transport timber stacks on return trips, explains Bosse Hjelm, who is responsible for the projects.

“I can say that we’re going from strength to strength. The effects are very good and the hauliers are satisfied.

They achieve a really fast, safe securing of their timber stacks.”

In the project in Piteå they have gone one step further. The tensioners are operated by radio remote control and a handset.

The handset means that drivers avoid having to “crawl” under the trailer, where the tensioners are fitted, when the tensioner has to be manoeuvred and released. I’d go as far as to say that the driver of Sjöberg’s test rig is almost lyrical, says Bosse.

“That’s true, actually. Remote control of the tensioners opens up a whole new world,” says Erik Sandberg, who is driving the test rig. “Of course we already had remote-controlled containers that both open and tip. Now we can do everything. We can stand at a safe distance during both loading and unloading. Of course we save time, but the major gain is that the working environment is both safer and more convenient when we avoid manual operations,” confirms Erik.

“The first time I came down to the port and was about to unload, they all wondered what I was doing. They’re used to seeing me walking around the rig and releasing the tensioners.

Now I was just standing in one place, pressing buttons on the handset. They were impressed.

“It’s actually really cool. I’ve been driving since 2001 and I’m always interested in finding better ways to do things. And we always get to be involved in decisions at Sjöbergs, which makes you engaged,” explains Erik.

MORE CARGO – BETTER PROFITABILITY

Bröderna Junttis Åkeri in Övertorneå was one of the first hauliers to start up in the region. Since 1920 they have been mainly transporting timber, although they also carry out excavation works, trailer transport and gravel processing.

In the late spring, Junttis invested in a new timber trailer fitted with both S10 bunks and TL tensioners from ExTe. The S10 bunk is made entirely of steel, and the main feature of the bunk is its large loading area. With the higher payload that is now available, they naturally want to have more timber on each trip. Which is exactly what the S10 makes possible.

To achieve an even better loading height, the bunks have been recessed into the frame of the trailer.

2x400 IN THE SAME TIME Talk about full steam ahead. The question is, was this before or after the fuel pump was replaced?

Can it be so difficult? Clearly. Especially when you’re dealing with rigs that sometimes want to live their own lives.

It all took place at an event in Föne, in the middle of the forest in Halsingland. A hot summer’s day with a variation of truck drag racing. A vehicle can take on any form, as long as it’s a truck. Anyone at all can take part. You drive a distance of 400 m as many times as you want within a certain period. And the idea is to have two times that are as close as possible. So it’s not about driving fast, but about driving the same, so to speak. And the vehicles?

Well, how about separate loaders, customised vehicles, truck cabs and ordinary trucks. Who won? No idea. But it was fun and there was plenty of noise.

A broken fuel pump means Petter Dolk has to dig down into the engine compartment. Peter is a haulier from Delsbo who sometimes transports timber.

As we said. You have to maintain the same speed in both races. Not come first.

EXCELLENT RESULTS DESPITE A SETBACK

“I THINK WE HAVE TO BE FAIRLY SATISFIED WITH REACHING SEMIFINALS AND THE ODD FINAL,” SAYS LASSE LARSSON ABOUT HIS SON ROBIN’S EFFORTS IN RALLYCROSS.

Robin competes at world championship level, along with the true elite of rallycross. This means making his way to tracks all over the world. And Lasse goes with him as his manager.

“It’s gone pretty well on the whole, but we had a few problems with the car and had a bad patch. Of course it’s disappointing when things don’t last for a whole competition.

Shame, because there’s nothing wrong with Robin’s driving. He gets plenty of praise for his driving,” confirms Lasse. “But of course he gets frustrated when things don’t go the way he wants. And he doesn’t want to go back to European Championship level.

Ideally he’d like to be part of a team, with far greater resources than we have now. We have to make do with one car against 3-4 brand teams who change for every race.

“In Norway we were back in the semi-final and things looked good until the servo failed. Now we’re looking forward to new competitions.”
