MANY of us express the desire to be around to see our grandchildren grow up. But an equally important question is: in what state of health do you want to be when your grandchildren come into the picture? Surely, you want to be able not just to see them, but to be active enough to play with and care for them.
In this health and wellness issue, I was inspired to focus on my own health through an executive checkup. Thanks to Fullerton Health, I was able to identify the areas that need immediate attention. Too often, we let the importance of knowing our health metrics fall by the wayside in favor of daily concerns. However, making a conscious effort to stay healthy is crucial. NO one ever told us that the journey of healing and transformation would be so brutal. Where did all this pain start? At what point did it become so hard to manage? Why did we choose to carry our wounds and the pain of our ancestors as if they were badges of honor? As someone who nearly lost her life to depression and had to be resuscitated after being lifeless for 3.5 days, I have endured emotional and sexual abuse, my mother’s two divorces, separation from my sister, my divorce, and caring for a son who was ill for the first eight years of his life, alongside my illnesses. There comes a point where everything starts to make sense. You make peace with your past and even feel grateful for it, no matter how hard it has been. Without my experiences, I would not be able to serve so many people around the world. Teaching, writing books, and creating healing spaces are impactful only if the teacher has walked the same path and healed their own wounds.

My spiritual journey began at 18 with my first meditation class. What gave meaning to my life and ultimately saved it, was my passion for humanitarian service, instilled by my mother. IN today’s fast-paced world, where it is all too easy to be swamped with daily activities, making time for the things that matter requires a conscious effort. Philippine Stevia Queen Maura de Leon knows this all too well, as nothing is more important to her than bonding with loved ones. Holding a special place in her heart are her seven grandchildren. Picking fruits and vegetables at the farm and teaching them how to sell snacks during the summer and farm harvests are just some of the fun activities they engage in. As innocent as these activities may seem, they instill the value of hard work and entrepreneurship in her grandchildren.
Moreover, a most unforgettable bonding activity took place in 2019 through a painting session facilitated by Tata Pai, the youngest child in her family. HEN it comes to running a successful hotel brand, the crucial role of a General Manager cannot be overemphasized. This leadership role is tasked with ensuring the overall success and growth of the business. Like a music conductor, the General Manager ensures that the various departments of the hotel work harmoniously and efficiently.
One such General Manager is Jerome de la Fuente. Before joining Limketkai Luxe Hotel, he was the Group General Manager at Pulai Springs Resort in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, and served as the Director of Sales & Marketing for Holiday Inn Worldwide. His intention to retire in the Philippines took an unexpected detour when through a friend, he was invited to Limketkai Luxe Hotel by its owner, Alfonso Limketkai.
Jerome’s initial visit to the hotel was incognito, allowing him to observe daily operations and identify areas for improvement. He agreed to take on the big task of being its
General Manager under the condition of having the freedom to implement necessary changes without constant oversight.
Jerome’s extensive experience in hospitality management is evident
in his day-to-day operations, guiding the hotel even in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. One of his first actions was to address the laid-back style of the staff, leading to immediate improvements.
A defining move by Jerome is prioritizing guest safety. The hotel
features state-of-the-art CCTV cameras with facial recognition, and the staff undergo regular training, including fire drills, first aid, and rappelling. This training proved crucial during a 7.4 magnitude earthquake in December 2023, ensuring the safety of guests and staff.
Slowly but surely, Limketkai Luxe Hotel has become a brand synonymous with excellence and the Kagay-anon hospitality. Significant events hosted by the hotel include the Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony, Chinese New Year festivities, and participation in Higalaay events. The hotel celebrated its 10th anniversary with a James Bond-themed event, drawing parallels between the hotel and the fictional character created by Ian Fleming, both exuding a world of refinement, high standards, and exceptional experiences.

ON our way to Morong, Bataan, for a family outing, we couldn’t pass up the chance to visit Zoobic Safari. As our trusty van navigated the forested area of Subic Bay, we grew excited at the sight of monkeys crossing the road and black crows flying overhead. “It seems we are visiting the animals in their natural habitat,” I told my family.
After securing our tickets, we headed to the special interactive animal show. A lady host called for adult and kid volunteers to carry animals like a lizard, a snake, and the Palawan bear cat. The highlight was unveiling the Burmese Python, one of the largest snake species, long enough for three volunteers to hold it side by side. More than just getting up close with the animals, the show was an opportunity to learn about conservation and environmental care, which Zoobic Safari strongly advocates.
Next, we visited the Serpentarium, where we saw king snakes, pythons, and boa constrictors behind glass and in cages. Where else could you see a snake shedding its old skin? The area also houses other cold-blooded creatures like monitor lizards, iguanas, and turtles.
We were amazed to see Iggy the iguana change color based on mood and temperature.
Continuing along the trail, we encountered more animals like deer, ostriches, and the albino caribou. The miniature horse was a must-see—so cute! We even bought lettuce leaves to feed giant tortoises, which moved in slow motion. Harry Potter fans would love posing with the magical bird of prey—the owls.
Zoobic Safari is renowned for its close interaction with tigers. We eagerly boarded an orange jeep with reinforced steel bars and entered the tiger’s lair with nervous anticipation. Fortunately, the tigers did not pounce on our vehicle, but we could feel their breath as they walked just three feet away from our caged jeep. I felt like a National Geographic wildlife photographer in the midst of the action.
The zoo tour offered us amazing family bonding time and a chance to recharge in the forest. We didn’t cover everything, like the Lion Close Encounter and the Croco Loco—a pit with over 200 crocodiles—giving us plenty of reasons to return to the forest of Subic Bay, teeming with exotic wildlife. n
