Young People Now, who organised the awards, were impressed: “The designs were good. There were a variety of ideas and the cover stories were well thought out. It looked like it had been put together with great care,” said understated young judge Mervin Martin.

The annual Positive Images Awards try to combat negative stereotypes by celebrating positive portrayals of young people in the media. The overwhelming majority of press coverage gives the impression that young people are violent hooded yobs, binge drinking and getting each other pregnant. Exposure gives young people the skills they need, and an independent voice, so they can show what they are really like.

Büyükyilmaz SHREK THE THIRD Shrek the Third finds Shrek and Fiona reigning over Far, Far Away, but if Shrek can find an heir, he can return to his beloved swamp. Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, this film is a real let down to a brilliant saga. The earlier films were fresh and original, but the song at the end of this one is basically apologizing because even the filmmakers knew that what they had created was completely and utterly crap.

ANGEL FIRE Chris Blythe & Steve Parkhouse For any of you who can’t be bothered to read a whole novel because of every word after tiring word, try Angel Fire enlighten. Filled full of brilliant illustrations and with a dark storyline, I doubt it will send you to sleep.

Angel Fire is a graphic novel far from the heroics of Spiderman or Superman. It’s about John Dury, a poster boy who’d fit in perfectly with our generation - corrupt, individualistic and not giving a toss what his ‘superiors’ think of him. He’s a corporate predator who hunts and kills businesses for money, power and designer dugs. But stuff gets a bit twisted when the latest drug hits the city, Angel Fire, a hallucinogen that unlocks the door to your very own paradise. Okay, it sounds a bit out of it, like a chimp on ganja, full of the old supernatural soul-stealing thing, but it’s worth a try.

Did you ever feel bad because people behave in a different way than you do? You should realise that sometimes it’s better to be different.

A friend of mine came to England when she was 11 years old and didn’t have any friends here. In school she met people who didn’t accept her because she came from a different country, had a different look and her English wasn’t perfect.

She tried to do everything to be accepted by these people. She even tried to behave like them, wear the same clothes and do the same things.

When she met a girl who came from another country too, they became friends and the girl told her ‘It’s cool me and you are different. I can learn things from you, and you can learn things from me.’

My friend understood that she was special the way she was. She didn’t have to change, and she knew that real friends would accept her the way she was. And what about the people

Look in the mirror. Got loads of freckles or a long nose? So what!

Model agencies are looking for people who look different to all the others. All your friends listen to RnB and you like rock? Don’t hang your head, tell people you really like it.

Maybe someone likes rock music too, but just like you was scared to say so.

All people around you are skinny, so you want to go on a diet? Why? Do you think you’ll be more happy?

I don’t think so.

Even if you get to be skinny, you won’t change your way of thinking. You will know inside that you haven’t done it for you, but because all the women in photos in fashion magazines are skinny.

Do you really feel that skinny is beautiful or are you made to feel it because some people think it’s cool?

Sometimes people need time to understand that it is not looks that count, it’s the way you are. If you show them that differences are to your advantage, maybe they will want to be different too. Some people do everything to be different.

They have lots of tattoos, piercings, or wear really strange clothes because they want to do something different and make life more colourful.

Differences make life more interesting. Imagine if all people were the same: they look the same, like the same things, behave in the same way. Don’t you think it would be boring? Imagine two friends, and their conversation... there wouldn’t be any conversation, because everything they do and think is the same: ‘R’N’B is cool, isn’t it?’

‘Yes, it is.’

It’s boring, that’s what it is.

Every person is special, but there are people who are scared to show how special they are. You will probably ask “What makes me so special?”

The answer is this: what makes you different.

Body piercing has been around for centuries: Roman men would pierce their nipples as a symbol of strength and virility; American Indian tribes believed piercing their tongues brought them closer to their gods; in Egypt, only a pharaoh could pierce his navel and if anyone tried getting their belly button pierced they would be executed; the Aztec and Maya were warrior tribes who practised septum piercing with bones, tusks and feathers to look fierce in front of enemies; and Ötzi the Iceman, a 5,000 year old mummy found in an Austrian glacier, had an 11 mm plug in his ear.

Today we have the same sort of piercings but for different reasons.

Boys might get a diamond stud or a golden loop to show how cool or tough they are, or to show that they have money. Girls get their bully button or nose pierced to look beautiful just like the Egyptians. People are starting to have really big holes cut into their ears, like Ötzi, and there are now some really extreme piercings. A corset piercing is where you have loops pierced down your back and a ribbon put through each loop and tied up at the bottom as if you were wearing a corset.

Although piercing is becoming more and more common, there are still people who frown upon it. I always get adults saying to me that if I get all these piercings on my face, I will never get employed. Why? It’s not harming anybody; they are a way of expressing who you are. They show your individuality. People shouldn’t judge you for what piercings you have, and it’s not just one scene getting piercings; people think Emos or Goths have piercings but they are everywhere and on everyone.

“I have seven piercings, and I did four myself,” says Sam, who is 15.

“They express who I am. I always try to have my hair back so I can show them all. It didn’t really hurt when I got them done, but it hurt a little when changing and cleaning it daily. It was annoying but it was all worth it.”

I have quite a few piercings now and still want more. I don’t know what it is but it’s like an adrenalin rush every time I get a new one done. It can be painful but I love it. The pain doesn’t last long and you don’t really care that much anyway because you get a cool piercing out of it. It can also cost quite a bit, depending on where you go, but it’s worth every penny.

People are always going on about the risks, but I don’t listen to them: as long as you go somewhere that is clean and professional, and you look after the piercing and clean it properly, it will be fine.

How would you cope if someone close to you died?

It was a normal Sunday; we had just come home from church. There was a message on the answering machine from my uncle saying that he needed to talk to my mum urgently. My mum and dad were both quite worried and went to meet him.

After 20 minutes they were back. My little sister opened the front door; my mum looked really down and my dad looked really hurt. My little sister asked what was wrong, but my mum just replied in a low voice ‘Nothing’. Seeing my parents upset made me sad so I asked her again and she said ‘My mum is dead’ and started crying. I was frozen in shock; it couldn’t be true. She was 62 but looked young and was very beautiful. She had never been seriously sick before. Tears started to trickle down

my face. Then I started screaming and couldn’t hold myself together.

My whole family was in tears. My two brothers and sisters were heartbroken because they never got the chance to see my grandma in person, only I did because she raised me for five years just like a mum. My whole

My grandma and my mum’s cousin both died instantly. My granddad was the only person that survived.

My mum and my grandma were very close, and my mum was really upset. Two days before the crash she had spoken to her dad on the phone and her mum wanted to talk to her.

My mum knew that they would talk for a long time, and she didn’t have much credit, so she said she would talk to her later. She never got the chance to talk to her for the last time and say goodbye.

At first it wasn’t really that easy for me; I couldn’t eat and sleep, and always had terrible nightmares. I

really hated the owner of the parked truck that caused the crash and the driver of the other car involved in the accident. They didn’t even stop.

Sometimes I got angry with my grandma for leaving us so soon and so suddenly. I thought that I would never get through with it and that life was over.

The one mistake I made was to keep it to myself. I never spoke to anyone about it. I find it hard to talk to my mum about it because I don’t want to hurt her, and I don’t want my dad to know I’m still grieving. But even writing this has taken a heavy load off my shoulders because now I know I’m not hurting as much inside.

My first birthday, in 1990, saw The Observer publish the article ‘Who needs school?’ In it Dr. John Collee claimed that “Education, as many teachers will confess, is a rather inefficient form of child-minding.” He believed that many of the facts learnt are of no use to children in later life - memories of science coursework called ‘The reaction rate of a potato chip with chemical’ spring to mind.

17 years later, as plans are introduced to make A levels harder for students, has anything changed?

The two-year period of GCSEs or A levels is predominately spent cramming information into our brains to help us pass exams. The former deputy head teacher of my secondary school was known for his expression ‘filling in the gaps in our knowledge’. Before taking our GCSEs he proposed we revise until ‘all the little gaps in our knowledge’ - or black holes in my case - were filled. As was so often the case, the

educ textbook was where I could find out the reaction rate of a potato chip or discover which scientist was able to give a mouse a human ear. Fascinating stuff, I’m sure you will agree.

I was teary eyed but not surprised when I discovered I would be leaving school with a mere four GCSEs.

I recently listened to an annual education conference delivered by Tony Blair, where he said, “I believe that education is the most precious gift a society can bestow on its children”. I agree with him. There is so much to learn and discover, it is just sad how ‘education’ has come to mean league tables and Ofsted reports. Mr Blair also said, “Way over half of sixteen year olds failed to get the requisite grade”. I helped form that particular

statistic and I am determined not to feel like a second class citizen as a result of falling below government targets (five GCSEs grade A*-C.)

“The key to education is personalized learning,” Mr Blair claimed, “To recognise different children have different abilities and in different subjects.” As long as we remain in a system where exam results determine ‘success’, ‘personalized learning’ will simply remain a nice idea.

I come from quite a background.

Both my mother and father had nervous breakdowns during their time at university, while my sister was so nervous regarding one of her A level exams she did not sit it. Yet they remain three of the most loving and caring people I have ever met.

One’s credentials go far beyond exam grades. I recently heard on the radio, “What is the point of higher education? For most (not all) the answer is straightforward: a university degree will help you get a better-paid job and make you richer.” This to me reflects the sad reality that education and learning are terms that would appear to have lost all sense of their original meaning. Class dismissed.

Is this the worst place in the world to be a teen? asks Dorothy Iba. I picked up a newspaper recently and saw a headline that said Britain was the worst place to grow up in the developed world.

A BBC survey said that Britain was ranked worse than average for rates of teenage pregnancy, smoking, obesity, drug and alcohol use, physical violence and bullying. They said that only 43.3% of British teens find their friends ‘kind and helpful’ compared to the 65.6% average in all other countries.

should dig deep “People before they point their fingers at teens” According to the European School Survey Project on Alcohol and Other Drugs (ESPAD), 32% of boys and 36% of girls binge drink four times every month. And drugs and alcohol aren’t the only problem. UNICEF say teen pregnancy rates in Britain are the highest in Europe. Meanwhile gun culture is apparently becoming a fashion. There were three killings in south London in just two weeks, then a 16 year old was shot in an icearena, and three days later a 15 year old was shot in his bed because of mistaken identity.

But people should dig deep before they point their fingers at teens. It’s not always their fault. Sometimes it’s was the way they were brought up.

(And if you’re the child of a teenage

mother, you were brought up by teens so you might not have the best preparation in the world!) The actions of some teenagers can be serious cries for help. For example, one boy who saw his father physically and verbally abuse his mother started beating up girls and his sisters. He never knew he had anger problems. The boy thought it was a normal thing for him to hit girls because of the example of his father.

Another example is a girl adopted by a family. She felt very unloved and felt if she had a baby then the baby would definitely love her. She told me she would do anything to have a baby and doesn’t mind who the father is.

Some people say the Government shouldn’t have made the law that parents and teachers are not allowed to hit kids, because in the old days young people were well behaved, good mannered and the problems of gun violence, drugs, alcohol and teen pregnancy weren’t around. But maybe the community could build more youth centres to keep teens busy, give more help to teen parents, or make a place where disturbed teens can go and get counselling.

So whose fault is it, and what are the solutions? To tell you the truth, I don’t know. But is Britain really the worst place for us to live? No. Britain has problems but they are not always as bad as people think. It might not be the best place for teens to live but it’s definitely not the worst.

My science teacher always shouts at me and says my grades out loud in front of the whole class. I feel embarrassed and so stupid when he does this. People laugh at me and call me dumb, dumb, dummy. I’m terrible at science.

You’re not terrible at science, you just need time to get to grips with it. Your teacher is trying to push you to work harder, but doesn’t realise that instead of encouraging you he is destroying your confidence. Tell him and maybe he will change his ways.

My best friend is going out with my ex-boyfriend, and she is always talking about the good things he says to her and the nice things he does for her - right in front of me! I always get jealous but I don’t want to tell her in case she gets upset with me. It really hurts.

You and your friend need to sort things out, so talk to her. Try not to be rude or shout, but speak the truth, and if she is a true best friend she will understand. If not, well then forget that backstabbing ho-bag, and the man she ran off with. The sket.

A while ago I got really ill and was told I’ve got Crohn’s Disease. When it’s bad I get pains and cramps in my stomach, I’m tired all the time, and I get terrible diarrhoea: it’s so embarrassing. The worst thing is I always have to be near a toilet - I can’t go anywhere! I’ve even had to miss school. My life is over.

A serious illness can have a big impact, but your life is not over. Your friends, family and even your school might be more understanding than you think.

The National Association for Colitis and Crohn’s Disease have a free 24 hour helpline, 0800 587 674, and a new website just for young people, www.nacc. org.uk/ibdandme, where you can get advice, support, and all the latest news.

You can even talk to other young people in similar situations on the forum.

He’s always talking about it, and when I go over to see him he always shows me where the condoms are. I am really not ready, but he’s getting impatient.

If he is pressuring you into doing something you don’t want to, he does not respect you. It might seem harsh but it’s true. The only right choice is choosing for yourself, and if he doesn’t respect that, then you don’t need him.

Are you driving to your death? asks Amanuel Towodras.

Cars give us the urge to push ourselves beyond the limit for that little bit of adrenalin that makes us feel immortal, for teens in particular.

I have had a passion for cars and motoring since I was about five or six.

I had quite a bad experience with a car crash right in front of us on the motorway, and another time a car crashed into us from behind. I knew the only way forward was to face my fear and get interested in and passionate about the very thing that scared the life out of me: the car. Now, more than ever, I am a caraholic.

When you reach the age of 17, have a bit of money and get your very own driving licence, you probably start thinking about buying a small two-door hatchback. It’s an exciting proposition, but there are one or two minor drawbacks. Firstly, you probably want to make your hatchback look better or, in slang terms, ‘pimping up your ride’. Secondly, you probably want to make it go as fast as Concorde, so you add a turbo or superchargers to make it go like hell, and forget all about the brakes and suspension; and that’s where everything goes wrong. You see, teens nowadays think they know everything. They think when they go for a drive in their Vauxhall Corsa with exhausts the size of dustbins and tinted windows, them and the car will be in perfect harmony and nothing will go wrong.

But young people are driving close to the double white line between life and death. Road crashes are the biggest killer of 15-25 year-olds.

Every day, 35 people die or are seriously injured in a crash involving a driver or rider aged 15 to 25. Even though young drivers account for just one in eight licence holders, more than two in five road deaths involve a young driver, and one in four convictions for causing death by dangerous driving are against under-21s.

Too Young to Die is a DVD and written guide for young drivers made by the national road safety charity Brake. It features advice about keeping safe, and interviews with young people who have suffered the tragic consequences of dangerous driving, like Nick Bennett. Nick set off to work and came up behind two slow vehicles. He pulled out to overtake and crashed into a three-tonne lorry. He says, “I was just an average 17-yearold bloke; I loved playing football, going out with my mates and driving my car. Now I can’t do any of those things. I used to regularly take risks while driving – speeding, racing my mates, overtaking dangerously – and never thought much of it. Then one day I really paid for my stupidity.

Now I’m in a wheelchair and need help with most day-to-day tasks.

Please learn from my mistakes. Don’t think you can get away with being an idiot behind the wheel without suffering the consequences.”
