Issue #84 November 2006 Editorial However well you think you know someone, you might be surprised to find out some of the things they are dealing with. Our childhoods are meant to be the happiest days of our lives, but, if that’s true, it’s a wonder some young people don’t just give up completely. But they don’t give up. They are forced to cope with it. And most of the time, they keep quiet about it too.

In this issue of Exposure, young people speak out about some of the things they are dealing with, like finding out they are going to be a mother at 15, or growing up away from their biological parents in foster home after foster home, or being bullied into giving up on their dreams, or, perhaps most terrifying of all, being the victim of a dark and all-consuming obsession with creepy cartoon super-hero Batman.

And none of them are keeping quiet.

things ‘ n’ stuff Eragon & Eldest box set Christopher Paolini £24.99 This box set combines Eragon and Eldest, the first two books in Paolini’s Inheritance trilogy. It caught my attention because of its brilliant cover.

The story is about a farm boy who finds a stone that hatches into an animal far beyond his imagination. As his life changes, you follow Eragon through his amazing journey of emotions as he battles evil and attempts to save the world. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who liked Lord of the Rings, Star Wars and other fantasy books or films because of all the imagination the teenage author puts into the fantastical world of adventure.

Months October was Black History Month, a celebration of Afro-Caribbean culture and history. It was first organised by Dr. Carter G. Woodson in 1926 to help the world see black people as active participants in history. He was an American, where they have loads of month-long celebrations.

January is Oatmeal Month, February is Snack Food Month, March is Peanut Month, April is Grilled Cheese Sandwich Month, May is Salsa Month, June is Beef Steak Month, July is Hot Dog Month, August is Brownies for Brunch Month, September is Biscuit Month, October is Pizza Month, and November is Peanut Butter Month.

December isn’t dedicated to a food. It’s all about Christmas dinner.

Of course, celebration months are not all about food, and they’re not all silly. Some are vital to the appreciation of groups of people whose contribution to society, like Black History Month, might otherwise go unrecognised. Another is Be Kind to Editors and Writers Month. We should get it in England. And have it every month.

The posters in my room are all from films like Batman, Batman & Robin and Batman Begins. Some of the Batman merchandise I have is still in its original packaging. For example, I have a Batman etch-a-sketch that talks and the box has never been opened, I also have a very rare vinyl promotional copy of the 1989 Batman soundtrack written and performed by Prince, plus Batman t-shirts and mugs and much more.

My TV is a Batman DVD combo and I have all four Batman films from 1989 to 1997 on two disk DVD. Another reason why I am a Batmanaholic is that twice a year I go to comic and film conventions where Sci-Fi actors sign autographs and where you can get cheap stuff that’s over ten or twenty years old and that they don’t sell in the shops anymore - like cheap Batman cards at low prices.

My obsession with Batman started at the age of four when I saw what is probably the most famous car of all - the Batmobile - in person, or, well, in car, with my mum and dad. Man! I was thrilled. Batman was also the first film I ever saw in the cinema and, you know what, it still is my favourite film.

ello, my name is Josh and I’m a Batmanaholic. I’m serious! You should see my room - I have so much Batman stuff I’ve had to have the big room in my house.

Batman was created by18-year-old Bob Kane and Bill Finger in 1939. Bob came across a picture by the artist Leonardo Da Vinci of a man on a machine that had bat-like wings. A quote next to it said: ‘Your bird shall have no such wings but that of a bat’.

There it was for Bob: the Bat-Man. Batman made his debut in Detective Comics issue 27. Batman was so popular that in 1949, Columbia pictures released the first ever Batman film.

Then there was the 1960’s TV series, more comics, and, on Batman’s 50th anniversary, Tim Burton’s massive 1989 film Batman.

There’s so much to like about Batman - the car, the villains, the suit, the city of Gotham, the soundtracks, the merchandise - but what I like the most is that instead of having special powers, Batman uses his intelligence to outwit his enemies because, after all, he is just a man, a Bat-Man.

found out I was pregnant when I was about nine weeks gone. I was going to get an abortion because I was scared. I went for a scan at the North Middlesex Hospital and I saw some little thing inside me, like a tadpole with a bum. That’s when I thought I can’t get rid of something that’s now a part of me so I kept it.

Now I’m five months pregnant and, yes, it was, is, and always will be hard.

People always say that I’m lucky because I never get morning sickness, I say ‘yeah, well, not everyone is as lucky as me’. I still get made to go to school and some people can say really mean and nasty stuff like ‘oh, you’re a top sket’ and ‘you’re a ho’ and things like that.

But, if you think about it, just because you’re pregnant, it don’t make you a ho or a sket. I mean, I know I'm only 15 but it doesn’t matter what age you have a child, it’s all the same anyway.

Well, that’s how I see it.

I have to see the doctor and the hospital every few weeks to keep checking the baby. When I went for my 14 week scan with my mum, it was so cute I got a photo of it. It had almost fully developed. I also went to meet my midwife and she gave me a blood test for HIV and stuff like that.

I heard its heart “ When beat, I could have started to cry ” People can say really “ mean and nasty stuff ” Mostly, at first, I was worried about telling my parents, like how were they going to react and what were they going to say? The day after the scan my mum and I were on the bus arguing and I just come out with ‘yeah, well, I’m pregnant!’ and it all went quiet. I said if you don’t believe me, I’ve got all the papers at home.

When we got home I showed her the papers and then went out. By the time I got home she had told my sister, my dad, all her friends, and all of her side of the family, and my dad and sister had told everybody on my dad’s side of the family. That annoyed me quite a bit.

As time went on more and more people kept asking me if I was pregnant and that got on my nerves.

They still ask me but I’ve got used to it.

It first kicked when I was about 19 weeks. It felt weird but now it feels wicked (apart from when you’re trying to relax and it wont stay still). In my 20 week scan it was even better. I saw all its fingers and toes and the outline of its nose. I’ve got a photo of that too. It was great apart from they found a black shadow in the left ventricle of the heart. They were telling me it could be a Downs baby unless it grows out of it, so I hope it does.

A couple of weeks later I went to the doctor and heard its heart beat. I could have started to cry, but I didn’t.

It’s a shame you’re not allowed to know the sex of it till it’s born, but at least it will be a surprise.

Don’t forget, having a baby when you’re young is hard and tiring so, if you don’t think you’re ready, don’t have one.

’ve got my dad’s face and nose, and my mum’s hair. Only they are not my birth mum or dad, they are my adoptive parents, but you’d never guess I was adopted.

I

My parents chose me on a piece of paper. Before I was adopted I was in a foster home, where you stay with a foster family temporarily. I was

referred to eight different foster homes before I was even four years old.

I was too young to remember visiting my adoptive family, but they have told me I visited a lot. I slept over to see whether they liked me, how I behaved, and whether I liked them.

I remember my adoptive family visiting once. My foster mum said: ‘This

OPTION ON is your mum and dad’, and I ran out of the house with my arms out open wide and hugged them like I’d known them forever (well, I was four years old).

I kept on visiting for a year and moved in with them when I was five, but I didn’t get legally adopted until I was seven. At the adoption court, I found out that my birth mum was living with her boyfriend and their little boy and didn’t want me.

I was distraught and angry, but I took it out on my adoptive mum. You might think you’ve been horrible to your mum. You don’t want to know what I did to my mum. I can’t tell you what I’ve done to her and now I feel so guilty.

I was violent, I stole, I drew all over the walls, I locked my parents out of the house, I threw marbles at my mum, I almost got excluded, and I was only eight years old. Try having me as a little girl in your house.

When I was nine, it got too much for my mum and dad and I was put into a children’s home. I have to say I didn’t like it there. I was one of two girls, and the other girl and the six boys there used to bully me. I was still

able to go back home and see my parents on the weekend, and I loved it because I wasn’t in that place.

After six months I left to go to another children’s home in Kent which was much bigger. I stayed there for four years. It was a whole mixture of

different feelings. It was a nightmare because there were people there who broke things and were violent to the adults. It was fun because we were taken on trips, camping, swimming, cinema, and things like that. I was getting told off more than I was at home. It made me think a bit more and I learnt a bit of self-control.

My mum and dad visited me regularly and when I finally went back with them it was brilliant.

You can never forget that you’re adopted, or what’s happened to you, but being adopted was the best part of my life. Some people aren’t grateful for the family they’ve got: I tell them I’m adopted and they say ‘I wish I was’. But even if you’ve been naughty, and you’re family don’t like you, it doesn’t mean that they don’t love you, and you should love them all the same.

By Mark Xenophontos ike many boys, I dreamed of getting past everyone else and becoming the best, but as a footballer, not a runner.

L

I grew up playing football wherever possible. At school I would wear my new Spurs shirt and people would make rude comments because everyone supported Arsenal. I was named player of the year that season but bullying became a frequent issue. I was too quiet and weak not to have been bullied and kids didn’t want some Spurs fan stealing their chance to score and getting all the glory.

When you’re being bullied, even your friends turn on you. You become introverted and volatile. All the talent I had was no use to me. My schoolmates ignored me. So I decided to dress in standard black sweaters and old track trousers and walk with my head down. I could not bear another moment of being bullied because of a game. I vowed never to play football again.

Sport never leaves you completely.

You still have dreams of winning gold trophies and medals. So I looked around for another sport and joined the local running club, Enfield and Haringey. The kids there were very welcoming. It wasn’t long until I made new friends, and became increasingly fitter and faster in the process. It was great, feeling my heart pumping faster than a rocket knowing it was getting stronger.

You feel so much better about yourself when you do well at what you love doing, and when your schoolmates see you, your lifestyle begins to change. People you don’t know talk to you, even the popular ones. I was respected and that is all I wanted. When you’re respected, people don’t judge you and you can become the person you choose to be.

Dreams can come true if you work hard enough: they are shadows of our potential.

Then came summer time, the track and field season. My nerves began rattling: my first year of competition.

You begin to train even harder. Then came the day of the nationals at the biggest athletics stadium I had ever been to: Birmingham. Everyone was so psyched for their events. You need

Thousands of pounds have been invested into the ‘Don’t die before you’ve lived’ and ‘Think!’ campaigns and every other advert is about road safety. But coming out of school or college where you’ve had to use your brain all day, you don’t always ‘Think!’. Traffic is like a soundtrack to your journey, and you only pay attention if it sounds good or strange, like a car pumping your favourite tune or screeching down the road.

The problem is you might be hit by a driver with a mobile phone in one hand and a cigarette in the other who knocks you right back onto the pavement where you should have been checking the road before you stepped out.

“These adverts only really have an effect when you’re at home watching them. When you get to the street, you don’t recognise the seriousness of it.”

Photography by Nick May For some drivers putting on a seatbelt is like putting on a Superman suit: they believe they are invincible. When drivers first started wearing seatbelts, the number of pedestrians killed and injured on the roads started going up.

Drivers feel safer, so they take more risks, and young drivers are even more reckless and care free.

“I don’t think we should stop wearing seatbelts ‘cos I had an accident not wearing a seatbelt and the airbag didn’t even come out. So it seems like a one or the other situation. You can’t really rely on the safety car manufacturers supply in their cars, because they are just that, manufactured for mass produce. But it’s better to be safe than sorry.”

“They should change the legal driving age to 20 or 22. Young people get flashy cars and then drive fast to draw attention to their car.”

My step-mother is evil and horrible to me: she makes me clean the house from top to bottom and just sits there watching me work. And my stepsisters are no help either. None of them do anything around the house.

And they won’t let me go to the school disco either. And they’re ugly. I miss my mum.

Alright, Cinderella, give it a rest. What am I, your fairy godmother? A bit of hard work never hurt anyone. I mean, why do you even bother with these letters? What are you expecting?

Some handsome prince to come rescue you? Sweep you off your feet?

Get sweeping the hallway, more like.

And who’s scrubbing the doorstep while you’re reading this? Back to work!

My friend owes me money but refuses to pay up. It’s not about the money, but I lend her cash all the time, and don’t get anything back for it. And she makes promises she can’t keep. It’s not about the money, it’s the principle. (Alright, it’s about the money).

Well, duh, stop lending her money.

But you’ll keep handing it over, knowing that you’ll never get it back, because it lets you both know she’s beneath you. Well if you’re so superior, just give it away; your wealth is more than just your money.

Round where I live, you’ve got kids all over the place just walking round with a joint in their hand. These kids, who are only 13 or 14, are just walking round getting stoned. They used to cause trouble but now they’re all too wasted. Whatever next?

Kids! Honestly. What ever happened to playing happily in the street?

Conkers? Leapfrog? Hopscotch? After all, a person is never too old to play Pooh Sticks. You should get out while you can and abandon to fate those terrible, pathetic children.

And another thing, nearby there’s some shops on the corner and you always see kids just sitting there drinking. You’ve got these kids, who are only 13 or 14, just sitting about getting drunk. What’s happened to the youth of today?
