If you’ve already given up on your own resolutions, the Babylonians new year actually began in March so,

technically, there’s plenty of time to make new ones: give up cigarettes or smoking dope; take school more seriously; eat five fruit and vegetables every day; do more exercise; treat someone better; treat everyone equally; switch off the TV properly instead of just putting it on standby; change the world one bit at a time; change someone’s mind; change yourself for the better.

There’s a magic piece of tableware – the enchanted Goblet Of Fire - and the foureyed wizard is chosen to do three terrifying tasks. What’s even scarier is that Harry has to defend himself against the evil Voldermort. Whhoooohhh!

THE REEL VERDICT This film is thrilling and will have you on the edge of your seat (even though I hate Harry Potter and none of them can act).

IN HER SHOES Cert. 12a DVD release: March 13 2006 In Her Shoes is about two sisters, Rose and Maggie, who are very different. Rose is a shy city lawyer and Maggie is a gorgeous good time gal hopping from bed to bed and job to job. When Maggie betrays Rose’s trust the sisters fall out.

THE REEL VERDICT There’s no guns or violence or blood, but be open minded and this heart warming film will make you laugh and cry.

DOCTOR WHO: THE LEGEND CONTINUES Justin Richards £20 (HARDBACK) Almost 42 years ago this teatime, for the very first time, weird electronic music was heard as a theme tune. It may have startled people back then but now it’s so familiar, it even became a club hit years ago. Doctor Who had entered our lives.

This book celebrates those 42 years. It describes Doctor Who through all ten incarnations and it’s all in there: baddies like the Daleks and the Cybermen, the companions, K9, and of course the TARDIS. This book is not just for the hardcore fan but for everyone who enjoys Doctor Who. Back to the TARDIS. SI

BY PAULINE NAKIRYA Nicotine is more addictive than heroin, cocaine and alcohol.

Exposure’s editor, David, started smoking at the age of 16. He remembers buying his first pack of cigarettes in a pub. “This girl I liked smoked so it meant I could sit next to her all night and borrow her lighter. I only smoked at the weekends until I met another girl and we smoked together during school breaks. Women!”

Most people don’t inhale when they first start smoking. “Once you learn how to actually smoke properly the first few cigarettes give you a bit of a head rush,” says David. “Once that goes away all smoking does is make you feel normal.”

That’s because all nicotine ever does is stress you out when you don’t have it.

Smoking makes people feel calmer and relaxed but 15 minutes after a cigarette, your brain starts freaking out because the nicotine is gone.

You may think that you won’t get any smoking related illnesses because you’re young and you’ll quit when you get

Deciding to quit is easy. Actually quitting isn’t. But you’re better off trying than failing to try and there is loads of stuff to make it easier. What’s also difficult is finding something to do that doesn’t remind you of smoking. “It’s been years since I’ve had a cup of tea without a cigarette,” says David. “Now all a cup of tea does is remind me of how much I liked smoking… it’s tough. It’s like a fight between wanting to give up and wanting more of that lovely nicotine.

“I’ve been smoking so long I don’t really feel like myself now that I’ve stopped. I can walk up a short hill without getting out of breath but I’m not sure that I’m a better person, or anywhere near as cool.

But this could just be my nicotine-starved brain attempting to trick me into starting again by trying to convince me I was once cool. Once you start smoking, you’ll find ways of justifying to yourself why you should carry on - other smokers

“The truth is that in 30 or 40 years time when you’re breathing oxygen through a tube, knowing that you did this to yourself, you’ll feel really, really stupid” older. “But in 30 or 40 years when you’re breathing oxygen through a tube knowing that you did this to yourself, you’ll feel really, really stupid,” says David. BY ROBERT BRADLEY “Nearly 40% of all land based wildlife is doomed to extinction within our lifetimes.”

Sounds like the kind of paranoid jargon a hippie or an eco-warrior might say to frighten us. And claiming that “by the end of the century 100 million people will die due to flooding” sounds equally over the top. But, according to environmental campaign organisation Friends of the Earth, if we don’t address the problem of climate change soon, these wild predictions could become reality.

The burning of fossil fuels produces a damaging gas called carbon dioxide which gets trapped in the Earth’s atmosphere. And it doesn’t go anywhere.

We are releasing so much that the land and sea are unable to absorb it all so it will just float around the Earth’s

atmosphere for hundreds of years. The result will be gradual, chaotic and deeply negative: global weather and climate conditions will be altered in unimaginable ways. And it won’t just be the hippies and eco-warriors panicking.

Almost all of the global warming caused in the last half century has been due to the actions of human beings. Not something to be proud of. Within our lifetimes every single person on Earth could find themselves affected by climate change and it’s likely to be the poor that suffer the most. But we have an opportunity that many don’t: we can help to bring almost immediate change.

There are ways of conserving energy and doing your bit to save the world. If you’re driving somewhere, or need a lift, why not see if you could handle the distance on foot. Or go a step further and buy a bicycle! When you leave a room, double

check you’ve turned all of the lights off before you go. And next time you’ve finished using your TV, DVD or video player, try turning it off at the mains. These are all effective but very simple ways of conserving energy and reducing carbon emissions. And there

BY AMINA KHATUN Like me, you probably thought you’d never smoke, drink or blaze. The thing is, I did blaze and I enjoyed it.

My parents were on holiday, so this meant... well, what would you do with a free yard? We were in charge! My brother and sister were looking after me, if looking after meant house parties with all our mates smoking and getting high.

We’d just jam all the time. We had a funny saying: ‘We are led by fools who waste our lives. Be your own leader’.

Things got better and better because we were flying high all the time. It was like every time we were blazing it felt so amazing and we loved it. We started blazing at school during lunch hours and any time we could. Going into lessons chung actually felt like I was learning more for a change. All we wanted to do is get blitzed out of our skulls. This stuff became routine and we

laughed at it for about two hours just rolling around eating and watching films. My brother stepped on it and we discussed its fate: should we bury it in the garden or cremate it? We started watching the TV blank as the funny little dots were making other pictures. We went upstairs because we wanted to sleep and we realised our dead spider wasn’t a spider, it was just some string - a funny illusion.

Things had got stupid and we were obviously taking advantage of our freedom. After getting stoned all we did was eat and then feel fat and lazy. We didn’t really care about the fact that cannabis was an illegal drug but we knew what we were doing was wrong.

It was against our religion, bad for our health, and cost a lot of money.

Maybe we could cut down. It’s okay if you’re with the right people and have

When I told him he was shocked because he didn’t know how my mum was going to react. We were both standing there outside the kitchen where she was washing up. I said ‘mum, we’ve got to tell you something’ but it wouldn’t come out. In the end she kind of said it anyway. She didn’t react badly. She just said ‘why didn’t you tell me?’

I lived with her all through my pregnancy and things started getting very good between us. I think she started getting excited as well - she’s soft like that - but I don’t know what she felt deep down about things like what people thought of her.

BY DAISY RODRICK I was fifteen years old when I got pregnant, getting ready for my GCSEs. I didn’t really like school, waking up in the mornings or doing homework. When I got to year 10 I got really bad, bunking and skipping lessons I didn’t like. I wasn’t really hanging with the wrong crowd, they were just my friends and I was probably the worst out of all of them.

I think I was 14 when I started going out with my baby’s dad. He was in his twenties.

We went through a lot of problems with his age, like our families saying I was too young but it was lovey dovey kind of thing.

I even had a ring on my engagement finger until I threw it in the street somewhere.

I was still in school so I had to tell my teachers. They were quite shocked but they were very concerned about me. When I had to take days off to go to appointments they’d call to see if I was alright. They tried to work around things.

I didn’t tell anyone else in school except my best friend. But she just couldn’t keep her mouth quiet and one person started telling another. Then I started showing so I was the one girl in school with a big belly.

Some days I wouldn’t want to go in because everyone was just looking at my belly and talking about me.

I wasn’t thinking about my future. I was just thinking about the baby. Now I miss school so much - hanging with my friends and going to lessons. It’s just nice to have something to do every day like that.

BY FARAI SITHOLE Manz! What is up with us? We think that life is about being ‘top boi’ in the endz and banging as many girls as possible while we still ‘got the groove’. But life aint all about that. We are becoming victims... of ourselves.

Remember education? It’s not always the best move for some of us but you can’t go anywhere without that little piece of paper. I know you don’t want to hear it because your mum’s always pounding your ear about going to college but it has to be said.

In 2004, less than half of boys got five A - C grades at GCSE. But nearly 60 per cent of girls managed it. It seems like too many of us think we’re going to get somewhere with one GCSE

we know from the Bible is ‘go forth and be fruitful’! What are you, a baby-daddy or a true father? Sex is not a little game to embark on, it’s a bit deeper.

For all you gangster wannabes, bopping down the road with your trousers down to your knees and a bora in your sock: are you really fulfilling your potential or are you just falling into that trap? The CONEL Sports Academy has been developed to offer quality coaching to students at the College alongside their studies.

Students will receive coaching in football (male and female), basketball (male and female) and netball.

Tottenham Hotspur have agreed to support the CONEL Sports Academy and students who join will have access to the indoor facilities at White Hart Lane as well as community coaches.

CONEL are the reigning SESSA Cup and League champions and some of our players have been scouted by professional teams.

Other sports provided by the CONEL Sports Academy include: badminton, boxing, athletics, volleyball, martial arts, table tennis, swimming, health and fitness, women only sport and fitness, squash and water aerobics.
