In my book, May is a belter of a month for a number of reasons.

For starters, we usually see the temperatures creeping up by a couple of degrees as summer edges closer; in turn meaning that the luscious beer gardens of Sheffield are once again fair game and, let’s face it, weekends become a much more entertaining prospect when that’s the case.

Secondly, we get not only one but TWO bank holidays.

Hopefully you’ll have your May Day covered by the time this mag is out and about, but head to page 69 for our round-up of things worth doing for the Spring Bank Hol at the end of this month. With gin festivals, huge DJ sets, live music all-dayers and plenty more going off, I’m sure you’ll find something that takes your fancy.

Reason number three, which brings me nicely onto this issue’s main shtick, is that May heralds the beginning of festival season, and to celebrate we’ve compiled our annual festival guide with a ridiculous amount of freebie tickets on offer from some of the biggest events in the country. While we’re on the festival front, it’s worth noting that Sheffield Food Festival rolls into town at the end of this month. Under new management from the guys at Events Collective, things have been taken to a new level this year. They’ll be bringing an abundance of street food vendors, chef’s demos, a well-stocked bar, the all-new Eats, Beats & Treats Village, plus a range of activities for all the fam to the city centre. Scoot over to pages 5567 for a more in-depth taste of this year’s festivities.

As well as all the festival hype, we’ve got interviews with Larry Love of Alabama 3 fame and C Duncan ahead of their shows this month. Throw in the usual mix of news, reviews, previews and kickarse features and you’re pretty much good to go, dear reader.

Oh, and reason number four: my birthday is in May – the 16th to be precise – so if you’d like to send a card and/or cake to the Exposed office (cash gifts also welcome), it will be greatly appreciated. On a serious note, though, I’ve already had the perfect present of a Blades promotion to celebrate, so I’ll settle for you enjoying this issue of Exposed and hopefully we can give you a couple of things to look forward to in turn.

Tramlines: The party don’t stop!

Tramlines Festival has again collared some huge names to keep celebrations going through to the wee hours at their official after-parties. Taking place across the 02 Academy, The Octagon, Fusion & Foundry and Yellow Arch Studios, the after-party events will feature a wide range of DJs and artists covering a number of genres. THE BUSKER BUS RETURNS! This year will see the Busker Bus chugging around the city during festival weekend once again.

Providing a route between the Ponderosa, Devonshire Green and Endcliffe Folk Forest stages, artists performing on the bus will be announced soon – so keep ‘em peeled!

Based on statistics released by Knight Frank, the rate of overseas investment in Sheffield’s commercial property are at an all-time high. Last year foreign spending was over £60 million and that doesn’t include the investment from HSBC to help build the new Retail Quarter.

One of the biggest investments came from Spanish company Trinova Real Estate who bought the Vulcan House building for £30.9 million.

The new Retail Quarter, which work started on last month, will occupy 15,000 square metres of office space and 6,000 square metres of restaurant and retail space in the city centre around Pinstone Street, Barkers Pool and Moorhead. It will hopefully incorporate more outdoor spaces, create stronger links with The Moor shopping district and an accessible multi-storey car park on Rockingham Street. RAISING A PINT – TO SCIENCE! Sheffield is a city many have referred to as the ‘beer capital’ of the country, but it is equally known for world-leading research. Over May 15-17 Pint of Science festival will be celebrating both by using pubs across the city to bring researchers and the public together. The event aims to bring a personal touch back to science, allowing the general public to meet the faces behind the research through scientific talks, interactive demonstrations and discussions – all while enjoying a good pint! Topics include artificial intelligence; organ-on-chip technologies; climate change; stem-cell therapies and search for dark matter using the large Hadron Collider. Six different pubs are set to participate, each hosting a different theme.

TUDOR PLAYERS HIT HALF A CENTURY Leading amateur theatre group The Tudor Players are celebrating their 50th anniversary this year, and to commemorate they’re putting on a very special season. The Sheffield-based company, founded on March 3rd 1967, have performed the majority of their 110+ shows at the Library Theatre covering a wide range of genres and various reproductions over the years.

There are two more in the works for this year; from May 16th-20th is a stage adaptation of Noël Coward’s ‘Brief Encounter’, a classic tale about the doomed love affair between suburban housewife Laura and idealistic young doctor Alec. Ending the season from October 17th – 21st is wartime classic ‘Goodnight Mister Tom’.

lavang You might have seen our ever-famished designer Matt Crowder taking on a mammoth-sized burger – and ultimately being reduced to tears – in the April issue of Exposed. Humiliated that he could actually be defeated by food, the takeaway aficionado challenged the guys at Lavang to whip up the hottest curry possible so he could repair his ego and restore some points for the team.

But could he handle the heat?

Only one way to find out…

I’m not going to lie to you, dear reader, we had some real reservations about this one.

Our previous spicy food challenge almost finished off one of our young interns and resulted with the poor lad having to keep a loo roll in the fridge for over a fortnight.

True story.

That all said, our Matt was really keen to have a go, and after taking some fair ribbing about his failed burger fiasco last month, we thought it only fair to give him the chance to make amends. The Exposed team walked into the sleek Fulwood restaurant post-work one evening, with Matt’s appetite sharpened and confidence heightened after sinking a few pints at The Rising Sun over the road. The strong smell of spices from the kitchen immediately stung our nostrils as we were led to our table, on which a plate with an array of different chillies and spices sat – African

chillies, Bangladeshi green chillies, ghost chillies, pepper chillies, more dry-roasted chillies, paprika and some curry powder – all of which would be going into Matt’s curry explained the Lavang chef, Jay. Matt was eyeing up the ingredients nervously and asked whether it would be hotter than a vindaloo, the limit of his heat tolerance.

“Ye… er… no. Don’t worry, you’ll be okay,” came the less than convincing response.

The sweating had already begun.

The challenge, then: to take on the ominous curry and a bowl of rice, but without the aid of chapatti or naan (Jay judged that to be cheating). To bring the win home, our guy had to finish every piece of meat and – this is the tough bit – resist temptation of anything to cool down his fiery mouth for a whole five minutes afterwards.

While we were waiting for the curry (it

had to be slow-cooked for two hours so all the spices and flavours could be fully absorbed) Jay told us about the only guy to have tried this curry before. Apparently one spoonful was all he could take before throwing in the towel. More nervous sips of beer came from Matt before the curry arrived, looking and smelling pretty incredible it had to be said.

Wasting absolutely no time, Matt grabbed a fork, skewered some meat and started chewing. “It’s actually really tasty,” he reflected. But a few seconds later, the heat kicked in – and with a quickly reddening face all he could manage was to splutter the words “proper” and “spicy” repeatedly in between a number of coughing fits. If things weren’t already bad enough for the poor lad, a most unwelcome fit of hiccoughs began as he went for his third forkful and a solitary tear ran down his

cheek. Picture this: a work colleague and a friend reduced to a snivelling, hiccoughing, crying, red-faced mess – it certainly wasn’t pleasant viewing.

But, fair play to the guy: he just ploughed on regardless. After a short break to calm down the hiccoughs, he returned to the plate with a steely determination and before we knew it we were down to the last three pieces of meat… two more… one more… YEEEESSSS! With the spiciest of burps, he finished the curry; and now for the five minute wait until he could cool his mouth...

It must have been the longest five minutes of his life, and pretty much everything uttered in that time were expletives entirely unfit for print – but he held it together and celebrated the end of the countdown by downing a pint within seconds. Bravo, Matt, bravo indeed!

VERDICT:

Talk about taking one for the team. Through the sweat, the snot and the tears Matt regained his title as Exposed’s ultimate food warrior. A big shoutout to the guys at Lavang for being such amicable hosts; we’ll certainly be back to sample something slightly cooler soon. So: who’s next?

Up to 17 sites across Sheffield’s city centre have been transformed by a range of internationally-renowned artists, creating a trail of stunning contemporary artwork for people to discover.

Painting on the ‘Feature Walls’ project started back in October 2016 and continued into 2017 as part of the Year of Making, a festival aiming to celebrate all forms of innovation and creativity in the region. Overall, there are 18 murals to visit which showcase talented artists from France, Spain, Italy and the UK all coming together to make the city a more vibrant setting.

1982 – THE HURRICANE IN FULL FORCE In its fifth year since moving to The Crucible, crowd favourite Alex ‘Hurricane’ Higgins wins his second World Championship title after defeating Ray Reardon in the final (with a 139 break – the highest to win a World Championship).

A LOOK BACK AT SOME OF THE CRUCIBLE’S MOST FAMOUS MOMENTS… This year marks the 40th anniversary of the World Snooker Championship being held at the Crucible Theatre. The story began back in 1977 when Mike Watterson, a Chesterfield-born promoter and former pro looking to innovate the sport, followed up on a tip from his wife who had recently seen a play at the venue. After later visiting the theatre himself, Mike was sold on the idea and applied to rent the space for two weeks, while also trying to persuade the Snooker Association of the venue’s potential. His bid was thankfully accepted by both parties and a famous relationship was born.

A crowd of 250 witnessed the opening sessions of the 1977 World Snooker Championship, a tournament eventually won by two-time champion John Spencer. But from these relatively humble beginnings, the venue grew to become synonymous with the sport worldwide and today welcomes thousands of snooker fans to Sheffield every year. The event is watched by hundreds of millions across the globe (210m viewers in China alone tuned into last year’s final) and its hallowed turf has witnessed everything from streakers to assaults on officials. To celebrate the venue’s longstanding bond with the sport, we’ve rounded up some of the most memorable snooker moments at the famous theatre.

1985 – THE BLACK-BALL FINAL Often referred to as one of the best snooker games in history, this 35-frame epic between Steve Davis and Dennis Taylor sees a final frame lasting 68 minutes and a dramatic showdown on the final ball before Taylor takes the win. 18.5m people across the UK stay up until 12.19am to watch the match.

1997 – RONNIE’S ROCKET Ronnie “The Rocket” O’Sullivan lives up to his nickname brilliantly with a record-breaking 147 break in just five minutes and 20 seconds, which averages out at 8.8 seconds a shot.

1999 – HENDRY SETS THE RECORD Capping off almost a decade of dominance in the sport, Stephen Hendry convincingly beats Mark Williams 18-11 to pick up a recordbreaking seventh world title.

2011 – JUDD TRUMP ARRIVES As an outsider on 80-1, 21-year-old Judd Trump announces his arrival on the world snooker stage in style. After some explosive performances, he becomes the youngest player to reach the final since 1990 – before eventually going on to lose against John Higgins.

It’s become tradition to invite the winner of Best Unsigned Artist at our annual Exposed Awards to take on the next In Session slot – and with just a number of weeks free until recording started on a new EP, the timing was perfect for rising talent Caroline Francess to step in and fill her boots. Meeting one sunny afternoon at Roco on Glossop Road, we got to know a bit more about what makes the Sheffield songstress tick.

First things first, kudos on being crowned Best Unsigned Artist at the recent Exposed Awards. How did that feel?

It was awesome! Last year I was nominated for it as well; I was surrounded by all these amazing people just thinking ‘I’m never going to win’, and this year was the same because I’m a massive fan of bands like SHEAFS and Cellar Door Moon Crow. I just assumed that one of them would win.

How did it feel beating them to it?

Beating is such a horrible word! It was just a bit bizarre, and I was thinking ‘Just how have I managed that?’. But without sounding too cheesy, the fanbase I have are really, really supportive and I think that it just showed when they came out and voted.

So, for those not yet in the know, could you tell them a bit about your musical style?

It’s sort of powerful vocals mixed with melodic piano and now filled out with a band. We’ve got bass and drums in there to give in more of a fleshed out, dramatic feel. So it’s quite… er… musical-esque? I tend to focus on the lyrics and the vocals and then build around that with the instruments in a sort of way you would in a musical. I don’t really intend to do it that way, it just tends to happen.

And when did you decide to get a band together?

Back in August last year, our drummer came up to me at my headline gig and basically asked if I wanted a drummer, so I was like ‘Hell, yeah!’. We started working together and both agreed we needed a bassist to keep it going, an old friend popped up when I asked around and it gradually came together.

You touched on the writing process. Is it a case of you writing the lyrics and piano, then the band work their magic on top of that?

Yeah, that’s it. Most of the songs are ones I’ve had written since 2009 or something! Then when we go to practice and flesh them out together. That’s the best thing about Dan and Adam, they just clicked straight away when we were jamming; they got the style of my music really well, which was a relief because I was really worried about that.

So you’re still performing and reworking songs you wrote back at high school?

I started writing some songs on my first ever EP when I was about 14, and yeah, I’m still playing them now. Ever since then, I’ve just been determined to keep writing as many songs as possible. When I finished Sixth Form, I was like ‘What am I going to do with my life now?!’ – but I quickly decided to take a crack at being a singer.

Your music is often described as powerful.

What makes a powerful song?

I tend to write about things most people go through life; I like to sing about things other people might feel they can’t express themselves.

When I released ‘Ready, Aim, Fire’ that was about bullying and my personal experiences, I did a lot of campaigning with charities about that. I got lots of lovely messages from people saying it’s made them feel they can talk about it and that they had someone to turn to. It was like a dream come true. When I was getting messages like those, I knew that this is what I

wanted to do with my life!

Has the Sheffield music scene had a big impact on you?

The Sheffield music scene is unbelievable. It was the best place for me to start out, as there’s just so many people looking out for each other.

It’s been so important to me.

What’s the plan for the rest of the year?

I’m really excited because I’ve finally decided to do my next EP, which I’m hoping to record over June and July. Basically, I’m getting into the studio as soon as possible! They are songs that are already part of my set, but a couple of them are going to sound a bit different on the record.

Will you be playing a new track for your live session with Exposed?

I’ve got a new song which I’ve only played once in Manchester and once in Sheffield, so it’s quite a scary one because I’m still trying to judge what people think about it. It’s a very, very emotional song. But I think I’m going to play that because it’s a fresh one. It’s called ‘Can You Tell?’.

Let’s have some quick-fire questions to finish off. Number one: what’s your favourite place in Sheffield to go for a drink?

Ah, it’s got to be the Washington!

Any guilty music pleasures?

Well, I’ve mentioned musicals before – but I wouldn’t call them a guilty pleasure because musicals are amazing. There are certain ones which are a bit embarrassing, but I love them all – Blood Brothers, Les Mis, you put any musical on and I’m hooked.

What’s one song that you wish you’d written?

‘Song to the Siren’ by Tim Buckley. It is like the most depressing song in the world, but it’s just so beautiful. He killed himself by overdosing with heroin after he wrote the song, and the song is about his relationship with heroin – so, yeah, that’s the kind of music I’m into!

A brief overview of this year’s offering sees world premieres of Daisy Asquith’s Queerama, Anna Ridler’s WikiLeaks: A Love Story and Ayse Toprak’s Mr Gay Syria.

A huge announcement this year sees rap royalty Eminem take over the main stage on the Sunday, while two of the biggest UK rock bands around, Muse and Kasabian, headline the Friday and Saturday night respectively. When I began in 2005 I saw so much opportunity in Sheffield and I wanted to be a part of putting the city on the UK’s foodie map. I started with my live music venue and restaurant The Runaway Girl, which was a tough business to run, especially leading up to the 2008 recession. Featuring on Kitchen Nightmares in 2009, Gordon Ramsay came and gave me some BIG lessons, after which Silversmiths was born. The key for my success with Silversmiths has been closely tied to strong relationships with my suppliers, customers and staff.

Loyalty from all of these is critical and I see the best parts of the city’s independent scene growing strong through good relationships, copromotion and collaboration.

Excitingly, I am exiting Silversmiths this spring to advise and consult with the solid wave of start-up restaurants and cafes across the city.

As our city’s increasingly confident food scene grows, I see it is the smaller businesses that can create real loyalty and react quickly to market conditions. These are the ones set to be the backbone of our dining economy’s future.

In the 10 years I’ve been operating as a restauranteur in Sheffield, the city’s foodie community has developed leaps and bounds – today the scene is alive with entrepreneurial foodies all adding to the collective feel of a progressive city.

Kelham Island has evolved into a foodie hotspot and I can’t see it slowing. The likes of Peddler Market merge food, drink and music into a social night out which has changed how a Saturday evening operates. No longer is it a bender or a restaurant choice; it’s about experiencing food and drink from quality producers with friends and like-minded people.

The single item menu has also evolved – we do one thing and we do it good! Whether it be pizza (Craft & Dough) or burgers (Urban Social), doughnuts or pho; it’s a showcase of the purity and detail. We don’t do 40 item menus as this is impossible to cook fresh and ensure the quality is world class.

The issue of waste within the industry has also become a real focus over the past decade and is backed up by using local and seasonal produce. At The Milestone we compost our kitchen waste and ensure our dishes use each and every part of the animal or plant.

The Real Junk Food project is helping to spread the wider word on this topic with ‘pay as you feel’ cafes fuelled by food that would have otherwise been thrown away. The truth is, Sheffield has lots of opportunity and growth areas for entrepreneurs who are willing to take the gamble. We have gone from a city dominated by chains to a city that supports independents. Long may it continue!

I think the food scene in Sheffield is growing and set to grow further as consumers demand a wider, better quality choice away from the ubiquitous chain restaurant. It has developed over the years to reflect the changing demographic of population coming into Sheffield, bringing with it a more diverse style of cooking. This will be set to progress further with the new Chinese quarter development, New Era Square on St Mary’s Gate. For the food and drink scene to continue to thrive I believe we need to support the local independent restauranteur and encourage the diversity of food on offer.

Brocco On The Park is all about the fresh, feel-good food that is homemade and seasonal. We know the provenance of the food we serve and the nutritional benefits of eating fresh. We hope consumers begin to appreciate the quality of what is being offered to them and support this type of eating.

For me, the development of the Sheffield food scene has been steady and progressive over the last twenty years. In the early days I think people were slightly averse to taking a leap into this industry, and it was slow to kick off as people were cautious of the risks. However, as the years have gone by the marketplace has become more casual in its requirements and opportunities have certainly been maximised. The future for Sheffield is bright, but relies on brilliant individuals, vision and a can-do attitude. I’m fortunate that in the last twenty years I’ve gone from a stand-alone restaurant cooking on my own, to at one stage owning ten places and employing nearly 300 staff! While I may have preferred the early days of simply just cooking (and not dealing with all of the daily admin that comes with running a business of this size), one thing I have learnt is you simply have to love what you do, every day, every week, every year. he Sheffield food and drink scene is as diverse as it is burgeoning; the last decade has seen the culinary community flourish, and it’s the independent businesses that have been at the heart of this upsurge. A close-knit city where restaurateurs and chefs support each other as much as they support Yorkshire suppliers, producers and artisan makers; the outlook in Sheffield is to keep things as local as possible. To find out more about the city’s gastronomic gains, we’ve rounded up a few key players on the scene who have given us everything from our first gastropub and shipping container finedining restaurant, to an award-winning boutique hotel and an eatery that even has Gordon Ramsay’s stamp of approval.

SHEFFIELD FOOD FESTIVAL Hopefully all of them! A friend owns Forge Bakehouse so I’ll definitely be going there.

Last year I went and spent an absolute fortune – but all on great stuff!

What was the tastiest thing you bought last year?

I bought some Jack Daniels smoky BBQ wild boar sausages. I forget which stall they were from, but I’ve never tasted sausages like them!

The chef industry is seen largely as a male-dominated environment. How does that shape with your experience in the job?

I’ve never come across any prejudice. I think, maybe more in your own mind, you consciously step it up being surrounded by all these men. You do occasionally get the vibe that some think ‘don’t let her do that because she’s a woman’ – but you just have to hold your own in the kitchen. You have to be thick-skinned to work in a busy kitchen; I’m not afraid to shove a grown man if he’s in my way.

A Sheffielder born and bred, Vicky Wainwright’s culinary journey has seen her rise from school cook to being named Marco Pierre White’s Chef of the Year. Now working as chef de partie at Marco’s New York Italian Sheffield, we caught up with Vicky to hear her story and find out what she’ll be serving up at the Sheffield Food Festival this month.

Tell us a bit about how your career started?

Well, I started out at All Saints School and worked as a cook there for 13 years. Once my kids had grown up I decided I wanted to go full time, just to try something new for myself. I saw the advert for an opening at Marco’s in one of the papers and went for it. I originally applied for the breakfast chef position, but I was eventually invited to work as the commis chef. When I entered the Chef of the Year competition, I was against 42 other chefs who work across the country in Marco’s restaurants. When it was down to the last five, we were invited to Birmingham to cook for the man himself.

Your oxtail lasagne dish saw Marco name you his Chef of the Year. What was the inspiration behind that?

I wanted to keep the idea quite local-based.

Of course, Marco’s restaurant is New York Italian and oxtail didn’t really fit the ethos of the restaurant, but I wanted to appeal to his old-school style of cooking with strong, deep 64 | WWW.EXPOSEDMAGAZINE.CO.UK

flavours. Thankfully, he really liked what I came up with and it was an incredible feeling to win the competition.

Has he given you any advice on the occasions you’ve worked with him?

The last time I saw Marco is when he visited the restaurant in October for a book signing, and he was great. But when I won the competition, he saw the tattoo I have on my arm of his signature; he just grabbed hold of it, looked me in the eye and said: ‘You’re doing really well. Just keep going.’

For those heading to the 7th annual Sheffield Food Festival this month, where can they find you and what will you be doing?

I’ll be in the demo tent showing people how to make my oxtail lasagne. But after that I’ll be out and about at the rest of the tents, anyone’s welcome to come and say hello, and if they have any questions I’ll happily answer them.

Are there any stalls you’re particularly looking forward to visiting?

Any advice for any chefs with high hopes out there?

I do have some days, usually after a 12-hour shift where I think to myself, ‘Oh my God, what am I even doing?!’ But you just have to believe in yourself; believe in what you’re doing. Like Marco said to me ‘just keep going’ – and if you have passion for it, it’ll work out for you.

Eats, Treats and Beats

With the ever-growing popularity of street food, this year the Sheffield Food Fest has created the Eats, Treats and Beats village, combining a diverse range of food outlets with live music, award-winning craft beer, coffee and plenty of prosecco to boot.

Setting up camp at the top of Fargate from Friday 26 May 6pm-11pm and then 11am-11pm on both Saturday and Sunday and 11am-6pm on the Bank Holiday Monday, the stretch tent will house a live stage with rustic seating and tables where you can enjoy a tipple from their fully stocked bar, sponsored by Sentinel and Thornbridge breweries.

Outside, an al fresco seating area will be surrounded by some of the best street food in the industry, including Canadian delicacy poutine specialists The Gravy Train, Neapolitan pizza masters Proove, jerk chicken aficionados Yabba Caribbean and badass burgers from Cow Boys.

Music over the weekend will be sponsored by Plug, who are going all out bringing the best local live talent and DJs from their hugely successful club nights. As well as a live set from this year’s Exposed Awards Best Unsigned Artist Caroline Francess, Propaganda will be channelling 90s Britpop and indie classics on the Friday. Etched in stone Nick Hallam spends an evening at The Milestone, the originator of the Sheffield gastro-dining scene.

THE PLACE

The Milestone is a king amongst gastro pubs in our fair city. Nestled on the corner of Ball Street this candle-lit beacon of gastronomy has developed a huge loyal following for its refined creations with locally sourced produce. Their modern twist on traditional and evocative dishes is literally the embodiment of Kelham Island, with the once industrial heartland of Sheffield rapidly transforming itself into a modern hub of creativity and chic.

THE FOOD

After kicking off with a couple of blood orange bellinis and some excellent fresh bread, olives and artichokes, we dived into our beautifully presented starters of pan-seared scallops, pork loin, black pudding, apple and miso caramel and crispy fishcake with creamed leeks and

slow cooked hen’s egg. Both were outstanding and devoured probably a little too quickly on our part. The scallop dish was packed with flavour and texture and the savoury pork and black pudding offered the perfect counterpoint to the sweet shellfish. The crispy fishcake was exactly as advertised: a crisp exterior with brilliantly seasoned fillet in the centre and a perfect egg yolk melting on top.

For mains it had to be the pan-seared rib-eye steak, served with potato terrine, whipped shallot butter, baby leek and truffle puree for me. This huge steak was cooked perfectly rare with a bark on the outside that was like being hit with umami cricket bat. It was savoury brilliance. Adding the whipped shallot butter and truffle purée into the equation also did well to balance out the onion hit of the leeks.

If all that wasn’t enough, I opted for a side of

Yorkshire Puddings as not many restaurants offer them as an accompaniment these days.

Now, most northerners have a partisan tie to their mother’s Yorkshire puddings, but these were just as good, which it’s about as high an accolade I can give.

The pan-fried coley, confit Jerusalem artichoke, kale, samphire, chervil and mussel velouté was a much more delicate affair. It paired seamlessly with the salty samphire and decadent Jerusalem artichoke, again showing the menu’s knack for combining contemporary flair with classic flavours.

THE VERDICT

You can’t fault The Milestone – it just works.

The food is constituently excellent, the atmosphere superb and the staff committed and always on-hand to offer tips on the best accompaniments so you can get the most out of your dining experience.

With a popular cookery school, two fantastic cookery books, sister restaurants Jöro and Craft & Dough and now the INC rooftop bar under their belt, The Milestone Group is a huge credit to Sheffield and fully deserves its huge reputation on the city’s culinary scene.

Vegan Chocolate Mousse This is made with aquafaba, which is the juice from tinned chickpeas. Check the labels on your chocolate and custard powder to ensure they are vegan.

Preparation time: 20 minutes, plus overnight to set | Serves 8

Ingredients 210ml aquafaba (juices from tinned chick peas) 10g Birds custard powder (other custard powders available but check label for non-vegan additives i.e. milk powder) 165ml oat milk (or soya or almond milk) 165g vegan dark chocolate (minimum 56% cocoa solids) 50g icing sugar 1 vanilla pod

Method Put the aquafaba in a free-standing mixer, if you have one. You can do it with a hand-held whisk, but it does take time. Whisk on full speed for 5-10 minutes, until it looks like whisked egg whites.

Meanwhile, make up the custard with the oat milk and custard powder. Follow the package’s instructions, but normally you need to make a paste with a little of the milk and powder, warm the rest of the milk and vanilla pod up, then add the paste and cook out.

While all this is going on, melt your chocolate either in the microwave or in a bain-marie.

The aquafaba should now look like whipped egg white.

To put it together add the icing sugar to the aquafaba and whisk in. Add the custard to the chocolate and beat in until glossy.

Now add one-third of the aquafaba and gently mix in.

Take your time – this will loosen the chocolate custard ready for the next part. Fold in the rest and then it is ready to put in your desired glass or container. Put in the fridge overnight.

The next day, decorate and eat! We recommend some vegan chocolate swirls and fresh fruit, served with a nice espresso or drink of your choosing.

Bubbling Under

For those of you who have noticed how much building work is going on down at Kelham Island these days, you’ll be pleased to know that not of all it is going to be swanky new apartments.

Stew and Oyster, purveyors of er … stew and oyster (as well as a tempting array of beer) are set to open this summer in the Little Kelham development. Some of you may have noticed them crop up at the recent Ball Street market, and with well thought of establishments in Otley, Leeds and Boston Spa, it’s a tried and tested formula that we expect to be a big hit here in Sheffield.

Sheff’s Kitchen

Whirlow Hall Farm is once more playing host to the Sheff ’s Kitchen cook-off. Local chefs will compete head-to-head in four rounds before a grand final will decide who will win the coveted title. All ingredients used are locally grown and of the highest welfare standards, then it’s up to the competing chefs to turn them into something truly spectacular. The chef ’s this year are Lee Mangles (Lawn View Clubhouse), Luke Rhodes (Halifax Hall), Scott Philliskirk (Hidden Gem), Stephen Wallis (Whirlow Hall Farm), Charlie Purran (Peppercorn) and Chris Mapp (Tickled Trout). Last year this competition raised £15k for the Whirlow Hall Farm Trust, which has helped them continue their work in aiding local children to develop a healthy relationship with animals and raising aspirations through volunteering and learning. www.sheffskitchen.co.uk

Heist sharing their Craft

With a number of quality craft beer bars already located in the city centre, the latest addition to the scene sees another fine establishment opening, this time on the outskirts of Sheffield. Heist Craft, a bar and bottleshop specialising in craft beers, independent wines and spirits based in Clowne, opened on April 7 after Heist director Adam France found the perfect premises for his craft export business; an old girl’s school built in the 1800s. They have refurbished the building completely and tried to bring a bar that wouldn’t be out of place in a city centre to the village. Operating primarily as a bar with six craft draft lines, Heist Craft also have an open bottleshop with over 70 different craft beers which allows customers to takeaway. Tapping into talent If there’s two things Sheffield does well it’s music and beer, so what could be better than combining great local musicians with equally great local breweries? The Tap and Tankard, a Kelham Island Brewery pub based on Cambridge Street, have decided to take their Busker’s Corner nights to another level – offering performers the opportunity to make a bit of cash as well as gain exposure.

The venue will offer a £30 starting contribution, a free pint and the performer(s) then make the rest themselves. The events will take place once or twice a month and the venue plans to make promotional videos for the night in the hope of raising funds and bringing in the best talent the city has to offer.

THE PLACE

For 17 years Cubana has been an absolute behemoth of both the bar and restaurant scene in Sheffield, but the venue shows know sign of slowing down with age. Since moving to Leopold Square a few years ago the place has gone from strength to strength, now offering a huge downstairs bar with fantastic cocktails, weekly salsa classes and regular live music alongside a stylish upstairs restaurant serving authentic tapas fare. Dramatically decorated with murals of old Havana, Cubana offers a genuine slice of Latino heat in the heart of the Steel City.

THE FOOD

The menu offers such wealth of choice it could be hard to narrow down what to order and – even more so – just how much to order.

Luckily, the handy key on the menu explains well: one or two dishes are suitable for a snack, leading all the way up to five if you’re famished.

As it was only lunchtime, we opted for six dishes between us. The classic patatas bravas are very tasty with a spicy kick alongside the sweet, succulent prawns of the gambas pil pil. Cubana’s flagship paella de marciscos is a huge triumph; the traditional rice dish comprises of a bounty of fresh seafood with a lovely fragrant hit from fresh garlic and basil. My personal favourite was the atun con habas y tomate, with soft, fresh tuna alongside al dente broad beans and expertly dressed with a silky cherry tomato vinaigrette. However, no Latino meal is complete without chorizo, and with the added glory of a fried egg, the chorizo y huevo con patatas gave an excellent nod to a classic cowboy breakfast dish. Our palates were finally cleansed by a beautiful salad of asparagus, spinach, tomato and manchego cheese, before we refreshed ourselves with a couple of outstanding Cuba Libre cocktails.

THE VERDICT

It’s near impossible not to have a good time at this place. The atmosphere is lively, the cocktails are excellent and after 17 years of service the tapas is still up there with the best the city has to offer. In short: viva la Cubana!

THE PLACE

It’s not hard to miss the brash exterior of Năm Sông situated on the Broomhill high street. Its brash façade is to raise awareness for the ongoing effects of chemical weapon Agent Orange from the Vietnam War, which is where 10% of their profits go to amongst other charities.

The quaint coffee house in Broomhill brings you classic Vietnamese dishes in a colourful and cosy setting – so cosy, in fact, that you can even kick off your shoes and sit on the floor amongst vibrant cushions and striking artwork. We decided to head there on the Tuesday after bank holiday weekend, with four members of the Exposed team in dire need of a quick pick-me-up. Their traditional Vietnamese Phin filter coffee was just the ticket; providing a tasty caffeine kick with its distinctively sweet flavour very much to everyone’s taste (they also do an iced version for warmer days).

THE FOOD

A slice of Sheffield Continuing the regeneration of the Moor area a brand new Pizza Express opened its doors last month. And to give the restaurant a touch of local pride, the venue has been decorated with artwork from Sheffield artists Jonathan Wilkinson, James Green, Jo Peel, Alan Rawshaw and Laura Knight, amongst other local talents. www.pizzaexpress.com 74 | WWW.EXPOSEDMAGAZINE.CO.UK

The menu is pretty simple: you choose from either a Bánh mì (baguettes) or bowl of Phở (noodle soup). But the real tricky bit is choosing the fillings, spreads, salads and sauces thereafter. The choice you get is impressive for the Bánh mì, with nine fillings, a wide choice of pâtés and sauces and the option of adding up to four salad fillings to really pack out a sandwich. My fellow diners went for lemongrass chicken, garlic sausage and Năm Sông pork, sitting on top of a generous spread of pate or chutney, a bed of greens, chillies and the likes and with lashings of Sriracha sauce – all of this goodness stuffed between a chunky baguette .The portions were generous and even came with a handful of prawn crackers each – score! I opted for the lemongrass chicken and Portobello mushroom Phở, as any form of noodle soup is my ultimate comfort food. I was very satisfied with my flavoursome broth filled with oodles of noodles, and anyone would have guessed it with the amount of slurping action going on. Despite the counter displaying some gorgeous looking desserts in the form of apple rose tarts, banana cake, mango tarts, lime & coconut tarts and dragon fruit buttercream cupcakes, we were simply too stuffed to take them on.

THE VERDICT

On all three fronts – food, coffee and service – Năm Sông simply delivers. A must-try for any fans of Vietnamese cuisine and relaxed café atmospheres, we’ll certainly be back soon.

When it comes to DIY Comedy, Stuart Goldsmith is showing others just how to build an empire. With a hugely popular podcast ‘The Comedian’s Comedian’ (seven million downloads worldwide) already to his name, the comic is currently on a second UK tour with his critically-acclaimed stand-up show ‘Compared to What’ and taking on the big issues in life, such as ‘How much should one spend on an ear-thermometer?’.

Ahead of his arrival in the Steel City later this month, Exposed spoke to Stuart about his journey so far and what we can expect from his latest show.

So, tell us a bit about your background in comedy.

I basically started as a street performer eating crisps on a tightrope at Covent Garden, but eventually I wanted to be more original. Now I travel all over the world doing stand-up comedy, although Walker’s Salt and Vinegar still tastes like youth, freedom and cash to me.

What first made you want to become a comedian?

I loved Lenny Henry as a kid and used to recite the sketches from his show the next day at school to all my friend.

Friend or Friends?

Friend. That was intentional.

I see. Can you tell us what inspired the name for your 2nd UK tour, ‘Compared to What?’

I was thinking about the personal and social risks involved in committing to spending my entire life as a comedian, especially now that I’m a father. I thought ‘but what if I’m not successful?’, and then laughed and thought ‘yeah – compared to what?’.

Your podcast, ‘Comedian’s Comedian’, has been hugely popular amongst comedy fans and comedians alike. Where did you get the inspiration for this? And why do you think it has been so successful?

About six years ago I suddenly realised I’d never trained professionally for the thing that was now paying my rent. I wanted to find out how the best comics in the world wrote and developed their material, so that I could learn from them. I also thought that I might as well record the conversations and then once I did I couldn’t keep them to myself. 7.5 million downloads later and I’ve helped start the 82 | WWW.EXPOSEDMAGAZINE.CO.UK

What are the pros and cons of recording comedy podcasts as opposed to stand-up performances? Which do you prefer?

Well, the show is a documentary about comedy rather than a funny podcast, but there are parts of it where I talk directly to the listener about what’s going on in my life. They’re really useful for reminding me that that informal voice is the one I should be using onstage. The podcast is listened to by tens of thousands of people all over the world, but nothing can replace the joy of doing well at a gig in front of actual humans in a room.

Being known by many for ‘The Comedian’s Comedian’, is it difficult to take the step away from the podcasts and get back into a stand-up frame of mind?

Only in interviews! When I talk about the podcast I become very serious about the art of comedy and my responsibilities to honour the hard work of my guests. Though that’s sometimes incompatible with being a comedian, where your job is to answer the questions in a funny way. I often keep answering them for real and forgetting to be funny.

To flip the usual question on its head a tad, what’s the worst bit of advice you’ve ever received?

Nice! Basically any advice where the giver is trying to make the recipient more like the giver. It’s amazingly hard to give useful advice to people, stuff that makes them become more like what they themselves want to become. I’m a terrible one for approaching other acts and giving them a load of unsolicited bullshit about a joke I think they should tweak, so I try to be friendly when people do the same to me.

What have you learnt or developed since your first live tour?

I’m getting way better at trusting myself. When something goes wrong or a joke doesn’t get the reaction I arrogantly think it deserves, I used to wobble and start tanking the gig. Now I have proper faith in the stuff and in my own work, so 99 percent of the time it comes good. So much of comedy is confidence, they can smell a wobble.

Who’s one comedian you’d most like to get on the podcast and why?

Noel Fielding. I love surrealists because I’m terrible at surrealism, and I love finding out the way they select something apparently random but with a huge amount of conscious thought behind the decision. There was a great bit on Buzzcocks where Amstell tried to do a bit of “surrealism” to make fun of Fielding, who immediately trumped it by doing something that demonstrated an incredible talent for the genuinely weird. He also directed an entire 20 minute set at me about 15 years ago and I want to ask him about it.

Dancin’ In The Street Local promoters Nice Like Rice and Pretty Pretty good are joining forces this summer for Just Shake – a Sheff street party like no other. On June 10th a mighty 16-hour carnival will kick the summer off in style, closing down a whole road for the festivities, before the party later heads into Hope Works for a full venue takeover until the wee hours.

The event will welcome the likes of Detroit house and techno legend Omar-S, the Pender Street Steppers and Canadian producer Jayda G to the decks. There will also be live music sets from disco minimalist Harvey Sutherland, jazz/hip hop artist Da Rico and Sheffield University’s own Samba Band. Poile Art and Cosmic Disco will be on décor duty with a few new installations up their sleeves, and expectation is high after the collective created a giant walk-through kaleidoscope for their Winter Carnival with Joey Negro in Feb. Some of our favourite bands and artists across the north – a number of them from the Steel City – have joined forces on a compilation album to highlight mental health issues in the music industry.

Sheffield-based music outlet Northern Exposure and Well Suspect Records have teamed up on the album to raise important funds and awareness for Help Musicians UK, a charity that provides support for people in the music industry suffering from mental health issues.

The 18-track album will feature the likes of Mancunian neo-punks Cabbage, doom-pop outfit The Slow Readers Club and London indie four-piece Sisteray – as well as a number of local bands including The Velcro Teddy Bears, Liberty Ship and Paul Fletcher and The Dukes.

Rachel Brown, owner and founder of Northern Exposure, told Exposed about why they chose to get behind the Help Musicians charity. “I have over the years suffered with depression, various eating disorders and anxiety. I have always been very open about it and the only thing that got me through all that and really helped me, was music. This was my way of repaying that escape that has given to me, by raising money to help musicians who suffer too. Help Musicians UK seemed the perfect choice, after all their research, support and campaigns into the still somewhat taboo subject.”

THE BANDS SPEAK OUT: “Our reasoning of getting involved is pretty simple: with the worldwide social media prison we as a human race pray to every single day, we feel the pressures of narcissism as the smoke and mirrors glitter show of another’s very entertaining life as presented on the internet. What this creates is nationwide and international anxiety, and the pressure is creating more and more victims of mental illness. LIVE REVIEWS THE MOONLANDINGZ LEADMILL Shrouded in mystery, intrigue and imagination, The Moonlandingz are the brainchild of Lias Saoudi, Saul Adamczewski, (Fat White Family) Adrian Flanagan and Dean Honer (Eccentronic Research Council). The Moonlandingz started out as a concept piece, a fictional band, but their debut album Interplanetary Class Classics had truly propelled them kicking and screaming into reality, feral as ever.

The night got off to a good start, first support act, Jellyskin had a real dreamy quality and second support; Goat Girl brought husky, inevitably cool surf-rock inspired tunes.

However, it was The Moonlandingz that stole the show, sauntering on to ‘Vessels’ with their theatrical, otherworldly sound that wouldn’t be misplaced in an episode of The Mighty Boosh. Sending the crowd on a trip to the ether, the band exuded kaleidoscopic wacky-punk and outrageous stage presence layered with thought-out satirical prowess in their lyrics. The likes of ‘IDS,’ ‘Sweet Saturn Mine’ and ‘Black Hanz’ gained traction with the audience who were in an absolute frenzy. They are easily one of the most exciting, visceral live bands around at the moment.

Is it satire? Is it meta? Nobody really can be sure, but what it certainly is; is an oracular feast on the senses.

GORILLAZ HUMANZ You’ll know ‘We Got The Power’ by now. A supremely catchy slice of classic Gorillaz, it feels like the virtual band’s twofingered salute to the current state of things; you know, Trump, Brexit and all the other shit that is driving everyone round the bend these days. “We’ve got the power to be loving with each other no matter what happens...” It even features Albarn’s onetime nemesis Noel Gallagher on vocals and it’s a genuine belter.

But if you’re expecting more of the same from their fifth album, then ‘Humanz’ will disappoint. Full of A-list collaborators, it’s certainly an eclectic beast but perhaps just a little too eclectic for my taste.

In truth, the album is patchy; ‘Charger’ which features Grace Jones on vocals sees a relentless, dirty, bass-heavy riff underpin Albarn’s faux-rapping and will play well in clubland, while Andromeda’ (with US rapper D.R.A.M.) is a definite grower and apocalyptic party banger ‘Ascension’ featuring Californian rapper Vince Staples opens up proceedings in style. But elsewhere the likes of ‘Saturn Barz’ (featuring Popcaan) and ‘Momentz’ (with De La Soul, no less) just feel like filler. A disappointment then, but not a failure. Just an album that’s whole isn’t greater than the sum of its parts. 6/10 Phil Turner

CLEAN CUT KID FELT

BLONDIE POLLINATOR

After forming in 2015, the peppy fuzz-pop quartet from Liverpool have finally released their first full-length album. The ambitious concept of Felt follows the process of breaking up, learning to move on and then finding someone else.

While it is a lot more upbeat and radio friendly than some of their past offerings, it’s still a difficult album to get into on the first listen.

The opening track ‘Vitamin C’ has many disjointed moments making it an awkward listen, and flavours of this carry throughout the rest of the album. For instance, the title track starts off fairly mellow, then the tone changes part way through and is jarring and sounds almost like a different song entirely.

However, lead single ‘Leaving You Behind’ is a lot more polished; the dual vocals of Mike and Evelyn Halls work together perfectly and it adds some extra depth to the tragic romanticisms of the album. While much of it is listenable, this is an album that has to grow on you.

If you’re a twenty-something and your mum (or dad, for that matter) has ever made you listen to their music collection, it’s highly likely that Blondie would have been in the mix at some point.

On their latest offering, the band work with a wide range of artists, from Charlie XCX to Jonny Marr, which results in a revival of classic Blondie records with some interesting new ideas thrown into the mix. It starts with a bang with ‘Doom or Destroy’ – and I’m happy to report that it’s typical Debby Harry: loud, proud and indicative of how she intends to go on. In fact, the whole album has a blissful, fun feel that’s aligned to a more raw, unpolished tone compared to their most recent album, Ghosts of Download. Pollinator is more reminiscent of 70s and 80s Debbie Harry, with honest, searing lyrics that almost contradict the upbeat tone of the tracks; it’s a perfect summer album that fits in almost as well at a BBQ as during a messy breakup. ANIMAT HOW TO BE A SHADOW

You know those interviews where they ask people for their favourite things about living in Sheffield? Well, when they get round to asking me, Animat will be up there with the rest. I’ve been trying to spread the word ever since I first came across these masters of ambient dub, and this, their fourth album, is as beautiful and fascinating as anything they’ve ever produced. Word must be getting out there, I’m pleased to report, as this is released on Banco De Gaia’s Disco Gecko label. The album is a collection of music adapted from their recent soundtrack to a 1974 French film Un Homme Qui Dort, which they’ve been performing around the country over the last year. The films they specialise in are most certainly not silent films, (how many more Dr Caligari soundtracks can we take?), but films with minimal dialogue, where their music can enhance, or underscore, or compliment or even contrast the screen images. Listening to this soundtrack, the moods and settings are rich and varied but above all fascinating, creating a soundscape and atmosphere which shifts and turns. It’s tempting to play it in the background, and it does work that way, but listening closely and repeatedly reveals hidden subtleties and real beauty. 8/10 Mark Perkins WWW.EXPOSEDMAGAZINE.CO.UK | 91

Take a pew, dear reader, and enter the dreamy pop world of C. Duncan. Since the release of his influential debut album Architect, the Glasgow-born musician has been on a wholly upward trajectory – one of Mercury Prize nominations and globe-trotting tours as he spreads his captivating live show far and wide. With a stop-off in the Steel City scheduled for this month, Andrew Martin caught up with the uniquely talented one-man band.

Tell us about your early life and how you became involved with music.

I started writing songs when I was very young. I played in a number of school bands and started recording my own music when I was about 13-years-old. My parents were both classical musicians so I learned to play piano at an early age, and also guitar, bass, and drums. I then was part of Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, which is basically an academy for the performing arts.

Before the release of your name-defining album, you were snapped up by Fat Cat Records in 2013.

How did that come about?

I’ve always been a big fan of Fat Cat and the artists they have worked with. They listened to one of my demos and, yeah, I just think it went down quite well. They asked me to join them – it was a no-brainer, really – and I basically got down to writing music.

You’ve had experience in range of musical styles, from classic to contemporary. How would you describe your sound?

I think it’s very choral, but it’s sort of changing at the moment. It’s always very choral, very dreamy and I guess at the moment it’s very electronic. But yeah, it’s such a tricky question – I guess, if I had to define it, I’d say choral dream pop.

You’re also a talented painter. How does that side of your artistry mesh with your music?

Well, when I first started making albums I thought that I might as well do the cover art because I paint. I think I’m probably a bit of a control freak when it comes to how things look and sound, so I do the cover art as well as the music. I’ll incorporate a few themes from the album and try to tie the whole thing together. I so think it’s quite important to visually represent the music.

What direction did you initially take for your recent album ‘The Midnight Sun’ and how do you think it turned out?

I wanted to do something different to the first album and give it more of an overarching sound. My first album, The Architect, was a mash-up of lots of different stylistic things I was trying at the time. I always wanted to do something inspired by The Twilight Zone, the sixties scifi TV show, and loosely base an album or songs on that.

I’m obsessed with the show and have been for years. So I basically started watching a load of episodes to try to get into the The Twilight Zone mood for a lot of the stuff on The Midnight Sun. Were there any particular episodes which inspired specific tracks? Or was it more of a general thing?

The songs aren’t necessarily based on any of the episodes; I just tried to capture the mood of the show: the slightly ominous but very often strangely ethereal and mysterious mood. That’s what I was going for.

What’s next for C. Duncan? Anything we should keep our eyes peeled for on the horizon?

I’m currently working on a new album. Hopefully that’ll be out in a year or so, then we have the May tour and then onto the summer shows! The new album hasn’t got a name or release date yet – I’ll let you know a few months down the line when I work all that out!

There are two kinds of musos: those who stick religiously to one genre of music and those who can never fully make their mind up about what’s best.

Alabama 3 undoubtedly fall into the second category.

A heady mix of blues, rock, country, gospel and acid house has given them a diverse and iconic sound which still defies categorisation over two decades after their formation. Lead singer Rob Spragg AKA Larry Love spoke to Philippa Revitt about how the band is here for the people – now more than ever.

The first part of the 20 Year Tour started last year, due to hit Sheffield later this month. How are you feeling ahead of the second half?

With Sheffield, it’s always good to be back. It certainly has some of the best parties, but on the other hand I’ve been beaten up a few times there. Health-wise, I have a cold at the moment, but I have a ton of Berocca ready for when the gigs start up again.

There’s been a big revival of house music over the last couple of years. Do you think this new interest in the genre has helped you with a number of sellout shows this year?

Yeah, house music is back! There’s a new generation that’s starting to be interested in this kind of music, which is pretty great for us. Hopefully, people becoming more politically aware after the events of last year will help to get us some more listeners onboard as well.

What is it about your style of music which has kept you relevant for so long?

Musicians learn from the generation before so it’s important to be aware of the times and push against them. That’s what we’ve always tried to do – and it’s worked.

You have a ton of members and the line-up is constantly changing. Does this keep things interesting?

We do have something of a revolving door policy, yeah.

We’ve had bassists that have come and gone and come back again, but it’s important to keep collecting new blood – it helps out the old vampires of the group, you see.

With such a huge back-catalogue of tracks – 13 albums’ worth, in fact – how do you go about deciding on a setlist?

We basically need to make sure we aren’t too selfindulgent. Even though it’s great that we play our new stuff, we always have to make sure to play some of the old favourites, in the first half of the tour we included 5 songs from the new album so that’s probably what we’re going to be doing again for this one.

With the strong political themes of your music arguably more relevant than ever, have you noticed a change in the atmosphere at your gigs?

Yeah, definitely. As I said, people are more politically aware and they’re starting to respond. We’ve sold out a few gigs on this tour – London, Kendal, Dunfermline and Exeter so far – and I don’t think it’s any coincidence that more people come to see us in the times we’re in.

With that in mind, what can someone expect from an A3 gig today?

Evangelic, deranged company that aim to convert those who are less deranged.

Last month I donned my glad rags and headed to the Library Theatre for the first ever South Yorkshire LGBT Awards. It really was a superb occasion, and what a pleasure to see the people who work hard for the events, groups and campaigns I write about each month being celebrated for the work they’ve put into the local scene!

AFC UNITY

Winner: Sports Personality AFC Unity is an independent women’s football club, one of the few of its kind to have been created without being supported by a preexisting men’s team. They utilise the sport for positive social change, using their dedication to feminism and social justice in combination with their passion for the sport to make a positive contribution in the local community.

Winner: Youth and Student Campaigner Biology student Alex has had a busy 12 months since his first time getting involved in activism, organising the Sheffield Orlando vigil back in June last year. He is now the chair of Hallams LGBT+ committee, as well as the LGBT+ rep.

YOU’VE (PROBABLY) NEVER HEARD OF Underneath the familiarity of mainstream gaming lies a strange world, a place filled with obscurities and general WTFery.

So, dear reader, pop down your PS4/Xbox controller and come with me to the forgotten world of failed consoles…

1. ATARI LYNX

2. GAME COM (AKA GAME.COM)

Just two months after the Game Boy was unveiled, an impressive yet underlooked handheld followed known as the Atari Lynx. With an actual backlit colour screen, advanced 16-bit graphics and a pretty decent library of games to boot, you’d have thought this might have been more popular with punters. Sporting a price tag of $179.99, people would much rather spend $89 on the Game Boy, which equalled a flop in both the US and the UK.

Whilst this unique handheld failed massively, you have to give it credit in one aspect: it provided touchscreen technology that actually worked pretty well for 1997. However, that’s the only good thing about Tiger’s Game Com. Even with the likes of Duke Nukem 3D, Mortal Kombat and Resident Evil 2 under its belt, it was destined for failure. A horrible screen and awkward controls made ita pretty depressing console to play.

3. FAIRCHILD CHANNEL F

4. PHILIPS CD-I

Released in 1976, the Fairchild Channel F was actually the first home console to have cartridges for games. Its library was small and sales were disappointing, but you have to acknowledge this little beauty as an important step for gaming history. A year later the Atari 2600 was released and practically pushed the Fairchild Channel 5 into obscurity.

The CD-i could have been better than it was, however due to bad marketing, bad promotion and bad games, it became but of a joke within the industry. Whilst it was the first console to use compact discs for its games, the goliath that is PlayStation soon obliterated the CD-i into lists like these. It actually features Nintendo games, despite the console not being a Nintendo product.

Yeah... no.

The Boss Baby

Fast & Furious 8 The “family” is back, this time pitting the gang head to head against their patriarch, Dom Toretto (Vin Diesel), as he goes rogue to help a cyber terrorist with a mysterious hold over him. The Fast & Furious franchise is unashamed, formulaic movie-making, meaning fans of the series will not be disappointed in the slightest. If you’ve seen the last few instalments, then you can expect more of the same, only with bigger stunts, bigger set pieces and a ridiculous story which is nothing more than a testosterone-fuelled excuse to tie together a string of spectacular chase scenes, lots of explosions, some highly polished supercars and plenty of fisticuffs. But therein lies its charm, and the film never pretends to be anything more than two hours of undemanding, wholly entertaining and unadulterated fun. Put your brain in neutral and enjoy the ride.

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 (28TH APRIL)

It’s time to get hooked on a feeling… AGAIN … as the Guardians – arguably Marvel’s best group of heroes to date – return to save the universe… again. Get your expectation levels set to ‘high’.

ALIEN: COVENANT (12TH MAY)

Ridley returns to his mad world as more colonists find themselves trapped on a strange world where there appears to be no life. Expect more gore, scares and Fassbender being weird.

COLOSSAL (19TH MAY)

A new baby’s arrival in the home of only child Tim sparks a sibling rivalry, complicated by the fact that the baby wears a suit, carries a briefcase, and has a mission to stop dogs from taking over as the world’s cutest beings.

The real win of The Boss Baby is that events are seen through the wonderfully unreliable eyes of 7-year-old Tim, as reality seamlessly bleeds with imagination, lending a looseness and lightness to the narrative that is quite refreshing. There are some nice efforts to delve deeper into children’s psyches, and there are plenty of laughs and clever moments along the way. Ultimately, however, the formula kicks in and you are left with the sense that there was probably a much better film trying to get out under all the toilet jokes and manic action pieces.

Anne Hathaway plays a downon-her-luck girl from New York who finds herself strangely connected to a monster causing havoc in Korea. Trippy, weird and disorientating – most reviews allude to something quite unique, but quite special.

THE FULL MONTY @ LYCEUM THEATRE There’s a real buzz in The Lyceum tonight, a palatable sense of anticipation coursing throughout the old theatre. I’d wager that the reasons for this are two-fold: the first being that The Full Monty, the Steel City’s most famous tale, is back in town tonight; and the second, judging by the excited titterings of many in the queues outside, is due to the prospect of seeing Eastenders star Gary Lucy and Chris Fountain of Hollyoaks in their birthday suits. In fact, the wolf whistles kick in during the opening scene, well before any item of clothing has been removed. It’s enough to give you the impression that some would be happy to pass on the the next hour and forty minutes of acting in favour of getting to the raunchy finale right away…

However, as we all know, beneath the comedy, the frolics and the many lunchboxes on show, there’s a serious message behind this story – a message arguably as relevant today as it was back in its original 1980s setting. And when Margaret Thatcher’s infamous ‘The lady’s not for turning’ speech echoes around the darkened theatre before the curtain rises, smiles are quickly extinguished as the audience recall the devastating impact of Thatcherism on their beloved city.

Trying to make the best out of his tricky situation – ie the lack of a job, an ex-wife demanding child support and a visibly exasperated son – the story of ex-steelworker Gaz (played with just the right amount of gusto and loveable swagger by Lucy) still manages to give a hefty old tug on the heartstrings two decades after the original film was released.

Writer Simon Beaufoy has lovingly adapted the script for a stage production, and amidst the heartbreak the belly laughs are still long and frequent, many of these being at the expense of debt-ridden ex-foreman Gerald (played by comedy veteran Andrew Dunn) and the hapless Lomper (Anthony Lewis).

The success of the Full Monty – not just in Sheffield, but across the country – is the humanity of it all: people confined to scrap and shut away by an unrepentant establishment, but fighting back, baring all (literally) and winning. Sadly, it’s a conflict many are still facing up to across the country a whole three decades later, which makes for even more poignant viewing.

Do they go all way? Well, you’ll have to head to the next tour venue to find out…

The team at Manor Operatic are dusting off their brollies for this month’s production of famous musical Singin’ in the Rain. A few weeks before the opening night at Sheffield City Hall, Exposed caught up with Isabelle Sykes who will be taking on the iconic lead role of Katy Selden.

How was it adapting to the role of Kathy Selden?

It was fine! Kathy is a fun, sweet character as opposed to being too loud and bold. She’s the girl next door and someone I’ve grown to find easy to adapt to because she’s a lovely character to play.

Has it been difficult to take on such an iconic role?

Yes, especially since Sheffield City Hall is such a big location. It can be quite nerve-wracking performing in front of up to 3,000 people with a role that I’m sure so many people will be familiar with – but I’ve tried to make the most of the opporunity and hopefully will do it justice.

As a young actor yourself, was it easy to adapt to a character who is an aspiring actor?

I guess so, yeah. Although she doesn’t act so much at the start as she’s in the chorus, which I found the easiest to adapt to because I’m also a dancer. The best part for me is in the song ‘Dream of You’, where she’s characterised by her facial expressions and the way she moves – it’s really enjoyable to portray.

Does this production take another angle on the traditional story?

There’s not too much of a difference, it’s still the same musical people love. But there’s definitely a Manor Operatic-style twist which makes it a bit more 106 | WWW.EXPOSEDMAGAZINE.CO.UK

modern and up to date than the original.

Tell us a bit about how you’ve prepared for the role.

I’ve watched the film so many times when first getting into the role of Kathy to try and truly understand and adapt to the character. I’ve also been to see the show twice in preparation to see how other actors play the role to see what I can do differently for our performance.

Who do you think would enjoy coming to this show? Is it a family affair?

It’s definitely one for any generation! It features not only romance but plenty of comedy as well and it’s the sort of thing that will be suited to pretty much anyone. Also, because of the modern twist, a younger audience will maybe enjoy it more than you would expect them to. It’s just a classic story for anyone to enjoy.

Are there any songs in particular you’re looking forward to performing?

Yes, I can’t wait to perform ‘Good Morning’ on the night. It’s a really iconic part of the musical and one that many will hopefully recognise.

Anything else you’d like to add about the show?

It’s definitely not one to miss out on! Grab your rain coats and head down to see us – it’s going to be a splashing show!
