Global Future Champions and Summer Festival at Longines Tops International Arena in Valkenswaard

During the Longines Global Future Champions and Summer Festival at Longines Tops International Arena in Valkenswaard, the Swiss watch brand Longines is proud to present a new model, the Longines Spirit Zulu Time 1925, marking the 100th anniversary of the brand’s first dual time zone wristwatch from 1925. Powered by a self-winding movement developed exclusively for Longines, this timepiece connects a legacy of horological innovation with the contemporary needs of global travellers.

Since the late 19th century, Longines has offered precise solutions for travellers navigating multiple time zones. In 1925, Longines introduced the first dual-time zone wristwatch, the “Zulu Time”. The dial featured the colourful maritime flag representing the letter “Z”, which signifies the time at the zero meridian in Greenwich, London, now known as Universal Time (UTC +0). In 2022, Longines reinterpreted this historic timepiece by launching the Longines Spirit Zulu Time collection, boasting state-of-the-art watchmaking technology. The collection quickly established itself as an essential companion for modern globetrotters, with its precise GMT functionality and distinctive aesthetic.

Now in 2025, to celebrate the centennial of this groundbreaking timepiece, the brand proudly unveils the Longines Spirit Zulu Time 1925. This commemorative edition features a 39-mm stainless steel case with a bidirectional rotating bezel adorned with exquisite 18K rose-gold cap, circularbrushed insert — a first for the collection — and 24hour graduations, enabling the wearer to track a third time zone.

The meticulously engraved numbers and indexes add both depth and refinement to the design, while the choice of rose gold, which contains copper, pays homage to the copper strip marking the Prime (or “zero”) Meridian that is embedded in the ground at the Royal Observatory at Greenwich, erected 350 years ago.

A true (or “traveller”) GMT watch, it is powered by the exclusive Longines calibre L844.4, a self-winding mechanical movement with a silicon balance spring and innovative components that make it up to 10 times more resistant to magnetic fields than the ISO 764 standard requires. The Longines Spirit Zulu Time 1925 comes with both a stainless steel bracelet featuring a double-folding safety clasp and a black NATO strap with a pin buckle.

This timepiece honours not only the brand’s innovative past but also its continued commitment to precision, elegance and the pioneering spirit that has characterised Longines throughout its history, while connecting a legacy of horological innovation with the contemporary needs of global travellers. This anniversary edition stands as a testament to how the art of fine watchmaking can bridge both time and distance, remaining as relevant in today’s interconnected world as it was a century ago.

Welcome to the show!

HISTORY IN THE MAKING AT THE

Baran Global Hunter Classic

This summer, Longines Tops International Arena (LTIA) in Valkenswaard will usher in a new era in international hunter competition.

Providing the first-ever, global showcase for the discipline, the Baran Global Hunter Classic will take place over three days, July 11-13, 2025. Co-founded by Kristen Baran and Andrew Lustig, the Global Champions League-style, team format will feature America’s best hunter riders paired with top-50ranked show jumpers on the Longines Rankings, as well as amateur competitors.

In short, it’s a competition that promises to be unlike any other. We sat down with Co-Founder Andrew Lustig to learn more.

The Baran Global Hunter Classic feels like something totally fresh and unique in equestrian sport. Where did the idea for this championship come from and how did it evolve?

The idea beganover20 yearsagowhen I proposed showcasing hunters on an international stage. A demonstration at the World Equestrian Games (WEG) followed, but the timing wasn’t right for expansion. Today, with fewer premier hunter events in the U.S., the need for innovation is clear.

Kristen Baran and I tested the format with great success in Wellington, FL and the Hamptons, NY. Inspired, weapproachedJanTops, whoimmediately embracedourvision.Withhissupport,we’reproudto launch, under United States Equestrian Federation rules, the first hunter competition in Europe at Valkenswaard.Thismomentrepresentstheevolution of a long-held dream and the beginning of a global platform for the hunterdiscipline.

Kristen Baran

The mixed-discipline, team format is really interesting. How do you expect these top riders in two different jumping sports to benefit one another?

At the World Equestrian Games, jumper riders excelled in Handyroundswith theiragilityand boldness. In contrast, hunter riders specialize insmoothness, subtlety, andmanagingflowing distances - like riding a 27.7-meter, six-stride line with rhythm and ease.

This teamformatfosters an exciting exchange of skills. Hunters can guide jumpers in polish and rideability, while jumperriders can inspire tighter turns and demonstrate more pace. This partnership between disciplines creates mutualrespectand learning. It’sacelebration of horsemanship that will enrich both groups and expand the versatility and understanding of what makes each style of riding unique.

Is there a particular day in the championship you’re most looking forward to watching?

Day One is especially exciting - it’s the first time European audiences will see a full field of the top American hunters jump a classic, 14-fence course. The jumps, designed by Kevin Holowack, reflect anAmerican tradition of [obstacles] not seen in Europe.

After jumping, horses return for a flat phase judged on movement. As the class narrows, horse byhorse, non-contenders willhalt in the center, while the top 10 remain. [Eventually], thefinaltwohorsesarejudgedsidebysideby oursix, top judges. This flat phase of the class will educate a European audience to the type of movement we look for in hunters.

© Mia Baker

What do you hope this kind of international exposure will do for the sport?

Many European audiences see hunters as “slow,” but the discipline is about a controlled, ground-covering gallop, rhythm, and elegance. Hunter rounds demand accuracy, style, and subtlety - qualities that differ from but complement jumper sport.

Presenting hunters at LTIA invites audiences to experience their refinement and tradition on one of the world’s most prestigious stages. Kristen and I believe thisvisibilitywilleducate, captivate, and help reshape the global understanding of the discipline - showing that hunters are as technically demanding as any equestrian sport.

How would you like to see the hunter discipline evolve on the global stage in the years to come?

We’d like to see hunters gain the same international prominence as show jumping, dressage, and eventing. These disciplines

have global circuits; hunters deserve one too. We envision top professionals from around the world competing at premier venues and gaining global recognition.

Elevating the sport means offering new opportunities, educating new audiences, and celebrating the technical and artistic excellence of hunter riding. We hope to preserve the sport’s tradition while pushing for innovation and inclusion. Expanding the geographic reach of the hunter discipline is key to inspiring the next generation and securing the sport’s place on the world stage

What kind of horse makes the ‘ideal hunter’ in your eyes?

Both Kristen and I value a horse with a brilliantjump, elegance on theflat, and - most importantly - a calm, intelligent temperament. The perfect hunter is beautiful, willing, and expressive. It’s that balance of beautiful movement paired with classic jumping style that keeps us passionate about the sport.

Andrew Lustig

What are your hopes for the Baran Global Hunter Classic in the years to come?

Our long-term goal is a traveling series with qualifying classes in the U.S. and internationally. Riders would compete throughout the year, culminating in an elite, invitation-only final at a top venue.

We envision a team-based points format that builds team spirit and inspires international participation. We’re excited to introduce new audiences, especially in Europe, to the sport’s elegance and tradition while creating a thrilling and sustainable future for the hunter discipline worldwide.

This inaugural event in Valkenswaard is a turningpointforhuntersport.Ourmissionisto build a lasting platform for hunter enthusiasts ontheworldstage-we’rejustgettingstarted.
