Or are you a Peter Patriot who’s looking for historical sites?
Maybe you’re a Cultural Cathy craving the arts on your getaway?
History Happened Here Close to Downtown Springfield, you’ll find the Springfield Armory National Historic Site which was the powerhouse of industrial manufacturing of military firearms. Known as America’s first armory, established by none other than George Washington in 1794, it operated for 174 years until the year 1968.
Cultural Cathy knows Where the Best Museums Are! The first of five excellent museums in the Springfield Museum Complex is the Springfield Science Museum. With real-life dinosaur tracks and fossils, a life-sized Tyrannosaurus Rex model and a surround-sound Jurassic Theater experience, you dino lovers will be in heaven. Next is the Lyman and Merrie Wood Museum of Springfield History, which showcases a wide selection of history from the Connecticut River Valley. Check out the Indian Motocycle Collection, which is the largest collection of Indian-built cycles in the world. Another stunner to check out is the Firearms Collection including more than 1,600 firearms. Finish off at the Michele and Donald D’Amour Museum of Fine Arts and the George Walter Vincent Smith Art Museum to get your day’s worth of exploring in.
For history buffs like Peter Patriot and his family, there are a handful of additional museums we think are sure to catch your eye. The Museums10 group features 10 fantastic places, seven of them located in the college town of Amherst. Start with the Emily Dickinson Museum and experience her homestead and where most of her life was lived. The successful illustrator and writer of many children’s books including The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Eric Carle resided in Hampshire County for many years. The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art in Amherst recognizes his work. Next door to the Carle Museum sits the Yiddish Book Center. Also nearby are the Smith College Museum of Art and Mount Holyoke College Art Museum. At Historic Deerfield, you can literally open doorways to the past at their museum of history and art in a classic New England village. Explore 11 house museums, hands-on demonstrations of historic trades, special exhibitions, and more. Experience special events, family programs, seasonal outdoor activities, shopping, and tavern lunch at the exquisite Deerfield Inn. For a glimpse into New England life from 1790-1840, Old Sturbridge Village is a must-see. One of the country’s largest living history museums, Old Sturbridge Village features costumed interpreters, 40 historic buildings, three waterpowered mills, working farms, demonstrations, gardens and antiques. Visitors can watch the potter, tinsmith, cooper and blacksmith at work, see animals, and enjoy hands-on crafts. OSV is open year-round and offers many seasonal events. Lodging and dining are also available on-site. In West Springfield, Storrowton Village Museum is an authentic, recreated village of nine 18th and 19th century buildings from Massachusetts and New Hampshire, assembled around a traditional town green.

The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art appeals to the young and notso-young with an extensive collection of art from renowned artist and author Eric Carle and many others. The Carle collects, preserves, presents, and celebrates picture books and picture book illustrations from around the world. In Northampton, The Smith College Museum of Art offers a distinguished collection featuring Degas, Seurat, Renoir, Van Gogh, Picasso and O’Keeffe in contemporary galleries. Even the restrooms are ‘artist-designed!’ Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Wistariahurst in Holyoke offers historic house tours, concerts, history talks, exhibits & a garden restoration project. The Carriage House features a gift shop & exhibition on Recreation & Cultural Life in Holyoke. In nearby Stockbridge is the Norman Rockwell Museum, home to the world’s largest collection of original Rockwell art. Keep an eye out for changing exhibitions of Rockwell and other prominent American illustrators. For music-lovers, the Springfield Symphony Orchestra has been delighting audiences since 1944 with their classical and popular music series presented at Springfield’s Symphony Hall.

The great outdoors beckons year-‘round in Western Massachusetts! We’re pretty much surrounded by woods, water and hills. And with those kinds of resources so close by, it’s perfectly natural that it’s easy to get out there and get a little lost, just for fun of course.
The Connecticut River winds through this lovely valley from north to south, and along with its main tributaries, the ancient waterway affords abundant recreational opportunities. Swimming and boating is popular along its length, which features many natural sandy beaches. Powerboats, canoes and kayaks can be rented at several up-valley marinas in South Hadley, Hadley and Gill. Springfield’s Pioneer Valley Riverfront Club (PVRC) is another access point emphasizing humanpowered craft, with rowing and dragon boat programs for youth and adults plus canoe, kayak and stand-up board rentals. The stunning Deerfield River is along the top of our region, running clear and cold. Fly-fishermen flock here, and in Charlemont, Berkshire East Canopy Tours & Ski Area offers zip lines, whitewater rafting, a mountain coaster, tree courses plus a bike park. But wait….we have Zoar Outdoor providing additional zip-lining trails and rafting along with Crabapple Whitewater, too. Clearly this region is an adventurer’s dream. The huge Quabbin Reservoir, partially in Ware and Belchertown, supplies drinking water to much of Greater Boston. Here in Western Massachusetts, it serves as a virtual wilderness, filled with outdoor recreational opportunities. Limited fishing is permitted by boat and from shore, and the reservation itself provides additional hiking trails and nature observation points. Take the 2-mile climb to the Quabbin Reservoir Observation Tower and relax in the fields at the top that overlook the valley.

For those who fancy sleeping under the stars, there’s no shortage of excellent campgrounds in the region. Among the most popular is Sunsetview Farm Campground, providing family camping close to Six Flags New England and many Springfield-area attractions. And don’t worry, golfers, we’re not about to leave you out! Western Massachusetts has dozens of excellent public and semi-private courses. Of particular note is The Ranch in Southwick. This 7,200 yard, par 72 course is ranked among the best in the nation by Golf Digest and Golf World. Up north in Bernardston, Crumpin-Fox provides a superlative course in a beautiful woodland setting.
Intrigued? You should be! In Western Massachusetts, when someone says “Get out” you’ll do it gladly, because there’s tons of fun “out there”.

If you like to do things a little differently than most, you’ll love Western Mass. Fresh air and fresh experiences await you when you getaway to our little corner of New England. When you’re here, you can really feel away from it all with these great experiences. Fresh Paint Murals Let our newest murals be the star of your social media accounts. Last summer, Downtown Springfield got a make-over. Artists from all over the country painted meaningful murals representing the heritage and culture of Western Mass. Get some good selfies and gain inspiration. Park the car, take a walk and enjoy the Fresh Paint! Dr. Seuss Sculpture Garden at The Springfield Museums - The Dr. Seuss Memorial Sculpture Garden features a bronze life-size version of Springfield native Theodor Geisel aka Dr. Seuss with his favorite character Cat in The Hat by his side. Other characters include The Grinch & Max, Thing 1 and Thing 2, The Lorax and more! The bronze sculptures are on the green which connects all the museums. It’s a great spot for a picnic and fresh air!
Whether you’re traveling alone or with your best buddies, there’s an adventure waiting for you in Western Mass. 36
