Petite Violette

TWO BROTHERS AND A BELOVED FRENCH BISTRO

By the time Brothers Michael and Anthony Gropp opened Brookhaven’s classic French bistro Petite Violette, they already had more than three decades of restaurant expertise under their belts. Their father, a classically trained chef, put the boys to work in the kitchen of his restaurant—Atlanta’s beloved Petite Auberge—in 1974, cutting strawberries. When the two started a new chapter in the family legacy, moving to a location three miles away, Petite Auberge was such a part of the neighborhood that the neighborhood came with them. The restaurant’s new spot was the former home of another iconic Atlanta eatery, Violette Restaurant, and so Petite Auberge became Petite Violette—an homage to two great traditions.

B Magazine | 5

Petite Violette’s sophisticated French repertoire (foie gras, escargot, profiteroles) expands throughout the year, exploring other cultures through specially crafted menus including Cajun Creole, Wild Game, and Mediterranean. Today, the restaurant’s sought-after dishes reach well beyond the neighborhood: you can spot their food truck, Scratch, by the line stretched out front at events and festivals, and their catering appears on tables across the city. Its adventurous palate has made the bistro increasingly popular each year, while legendary dishes from the original Petite Auberge, like Beef Wellington, remain staples of the menu 40+ years after they were first served to guests.

A warm glow permeates Petite Violette both literally and figuratively, with natural light flooding through the oversized windows as well as delicate chandeliers and creative light fixtures adding touches throughout. The distinctive blend of culinary elegance and welcoming, friendly service makes for an upscale yet relaxed atmosphere, turning visitors from all over the city into regulars. (The tree-lined patio definitely doesn’t hurt either.)

“ When it comes to events, Petite Violette sets the bar high.”

And when it comes to events, Petite Violette sets the bar high. Every month, the popular “Dinner and a Diva” event showcases selections from famous operas performed by the Capitol City Opera Company, accompanied by a gourmet four-course dinner paired with wine. Add some enigma and comedy to your night with “Murder, Mystery, and Mayhem,” an interactive murder mystery dinner featuring original murder mysteries with live actors and audience participation, paired with a four-course dinner.

Be sure to stop in to Petite Violette’s olive oil and vinegar boutique, where dozens of fresh, flavored, and infused oils and vinegars have been personally selected and imported by the restaurant’s chefs. Besides guiding you through tasting notes and history, the knowledgeable staff can even tell you when the olives were pressed. Sample selections like savory Georgia Olive Oil and Peach and Pecan Balsamic, and grab a bottle of your favorite on your way out.

There’s something to delight each of the senses at Petite Violette, but if you do happen to miss the olive oil bar (or the patio, or the spectacular wine list, or the profiteroles with pistachio ice cream and chocolate sauce…) don’t worry—you’ll be back for more. Trust us on this.

Two Italians

VALENZA AND VERO

In Valenza’s upscale yet cozy dining room, guests are surrounded with the warmth and elegance of a village café, where expertly chosen wines flow and live music fills the air. Venetian plastered walls blend with rustic oak and pine furnishings, and European chandeliers bathe turn-of-the-century architectural accents in a warm glow. Though the atmosphere is exactly what you’d want for a romantic dinner or gathering with old friends, the food is the clear reason you’ll find yourself making excuses for those romantic dinners and gatherings as often as possible. Chef Matt Swickerath’s menu features a full spread of Tuscan deliciousness, with antipasti followed by pitch-perfect pastas and entrées (insider tip: don’t miss the scallops or bucatini). With a beautiful patio lit by string lights for dining al fresco in good weather and a weekly “Notte di Famiglia” Sunday supper, Valenza is full of thoughtful touches that will have you waxing nostalgic before you’ve even finished your caffée corretto and strawberry crostata.

8 | B Magazine
Chef Matt Swickerath and owner Michel Arnette

Guests can watch Valenza’s signature pastas being made by hand next door at the restaurant’s beloved younger sibling, Vero. Featuring weathered wood and unique lighting, the interior echoes Valenza’s while highlighting the star of the show, a 3-ton Acunto pizza oven cast from the volcanic rock clay of Mount Vesuvius and custom-built for the restaurant. Hot enough to cook each pizza in two minutes, the oven turns out thin-crust pies with the hallmark char and perfect crunchy-chewy balance every Napolitano pizza purist looks for. Taking a cue from the success of Valenza’s Sunday night tradition, Vero celebrates its status as a true family favorite with its Sunday evening pizza-and-gelato combos for kids under twelve, compliments of the house, along with drink specials for the adults.

Though the pizzas are undoubtedly the reason for your first visit, Vero’s salads just might be the hook that keeps you coming back, and some regulars insist it’s not a Vero visit without one. The namesake salad, Vero’s take on a classic Greek salad with pickled onions and fresh herbs, pairs perfectly with any pizza. Insider tip #2: if you’re a spice lover, ask your server for a hit of the Calabrian chili oil to add some kick to your evening before ending the night on an almost impossibly perfect note with an order of homemade cannoli filled with clouds of whipped ricotta and pistachio.

At Haven,you’re immediately family.

Slice of Haven

LOCAL FAVORITE HAVEN RESTAURANT AND BAR

If it’s your first visit to Haven in the Dresden neighborhood of Brookhaven, the first thing you might notice is a lush patio with vines and wrought iron under white fairy lights, one of the most sought-out alcoves for al fresco dining in town. You might also notice that diners at different tables seem to know each other and the owner. It’s a friendly environment, yes, but there’s another reason for the cross-table conversation: since opening over 15 years ago, Haven has been a centerpiece of the community, and many of its patrons have been dining there since day one.

B Magazine | 11

This modern-yet-cozy loft space includes an impressive wine library wall and an open kitchen that puts the excitement on full display for guests. During warmer months, the very popular patio environment features a beautiful garden shaded by a canopy of elm trees.

Though Dresden Drive is now home to specialty boutiques, cocktail bars, and tasty restaurants, Haven was the original culinary pioneer. The owners knew it was a risk but took their time, patiently looking at different neighborhoods and spaces until they found one they thought was perfect—and the community agreed. They created a menu that was both seasonal and reliable, full of perfectly turned-out classics like steamed mussels with grilled sourdough, steak frites, and made-from-scratch tortellini alongside gourmetlevel comfort foods like tater tots and chicken and dumplings.

The extensive wine list has turned many a guest into a loyal patron, and the unique cocktails served by Haven’s attentive bartenders are just as appealing. Looking for a just-right brunch? The weekend late morning cocktails are also not to be missed— order a Grand Mimosa or Haven Bloody Mary to accompany crab cakes with poached eggs and challah French toast with peaches and whipped cream.

Haven’s dessert menu deserves its own spotlight, with oldfashioned banana pudding studded with homemade Nilla wafers, a chocolate brownie sundae with espresso sauce, caramel ice cream, and cocoa nibs that may have you ordering dessert first, and daily rotating selections of locally made ice creams and sorbets.

Haven’s community engagement has only grown since they opened their doors, and it shows in every facet of the dining experience, from the live music by renowned local artists to the bread basket with selections from a local bakery served with Pimento cheese, salted butter, and apple butter, the proceeds from which directly benefit the Atlanta Community Food Bank.

Reserve a table and make yourself at home.

Happiest Hour

COCKTAILS AND SMALL PLATES AT POUR KITCHEN + BAR

In the heart of Brookhaven, Pour Kitchen + Bar is on a mission to make great wine as approachable as your favorite bartender. “Wine shouldn’t be intimidating,” says sommelier Daniel Campbell, who loves introducing guests to different varietals from the establishment’s well-curated list or recommending a selection to enhance their meal. Campbell and Executive Chef Tommy Rothwell work together closely to create dining options based around locally-sourced, high quality ingredients prepared simply and well, that perfectly complement the wines.

14 | B Magazine

Wine may have a reputation for being pricey, but Pour puts their money where their mouth is when it comes to accessibility, with daily happy hour specials and half-priced bottles that make it easy to venture out and try higher-end varietals. One of the best ways to experience Pour is through their rotating wine flights, showcasing selections from the scores of wines on hand, chosen specifically to bring out the flavors of the made-from-scratch appetizers and entrées accompanying them. Flights range from Old World Reds featuring Italian, French, and Spanish legends to New World Whites, Chandon Sparkling selections, West Coast Reds, and more. You’ll find both classic vintners and distinctive newcomers, including biodynamic wines from makers using exclusively all-natural materials in their process.

The atmosphere at Pour is friendly and relaxed, with reclaimed wood walls, a cozy patio, and a second bar in the dining room perfect for larger groups. While the staff’s wine expertise may be formidable, the vibe is distinctly low-pressure and servers are always happy to recommend a specialty seasonal drink if you’re more in the mood for a cocktail than a cabernet (or a cold beer, whiskey flight, or even a glass of mezcal). No one’s going to judge you for ordering the fig and prosciutto flatbread or charcuterie board every single time you walk in the door, either, regardless of what you’re drinking…not that we’ve done that.

Whether you’re an aficionado or a first-timer venturing into the world of wine, looking for a spot to get festive with friends, or searching for a quiet perch to enjoy a relaxing drink after work, do yourself a favor and make a date with Pour.

The Above and Beyond Cantina

PURE TAQUERIA’S DAY-TO-NIGHT APPEAL

With house-made tortillas, mouthwatering margaritas, and made-from-scratch salsas, PURE Taqueria’s inspired approach to authentic Mexican food has made it a mecca for Brookhavenites.

Since opening their first location in 2005, Owners Chris and Michele Sedgwick have continued to incorporate deliciously innovative ways to bring their passion for style and food to life. Originally opened in a former gas station and largely designed and constructed by the two of them, the Sedgwicks’ vision has expanded to bring a little more of Mexico to Georgia every year. As The Atlanta Journal Constitution put it, “Eating here feels like a day at a Mexican beach. When the flavor of fish, corn, and slaw hits your mouth, all is right with the world.” And the fish tacos are just the beginning.

“Eating here feels like a day at a Mexican beach. When the flavor of fish, corn, and slaw hits your mouth, all is right with the world.”
B Magazine | 17

Yes, you’ll find all kinds of margaritas by the glass or pitcher, including seasonal concoctions and low-sugar variations, but make no mistake: while they may be on trend, PURE knows their stuff when it comes to tequila. Traveling together to Jalisco, Mexico, with Herradura Tequila, they taste tested and hand-picked specific barrels of tequila, chosen for the flavor profiles they wanted to showcase in their drinks back home. (Don’t miss the Double Barrel Margarita!) And for every margarita they sell, the restaurant makes a donation to the Ocean Conservancy.

Of course, any drink or perfectly constructed taco is even better al fresco, and PURE’s patio and rooftop are bustling during good weather months, with live music and DJ’s taking over as the day crowd switches over to evening-out groups. From pop-up art shows and gourmet tequila dinners to their famous Halloween parties and Cinco de Mayo events (think piñatas, dancing, special appearances by donkeys, and even custom Instagram gifs), PURE’s place in the Blackburn neighborhood has been celebrated and celebratory since day one, noon to night.

18 | B Magazine

No matter the day or season, the taqueria’s Queso con Todo with tender tinga chicken, fresh jalapeño, and guacamole is a house favorite, as is the Borrego con Papas with its melt-in-your-mouth braised lamb shank, chipotle mashed potatoes, and salsa morita. Not a carnivore? PURE’s menu is full of vegetarian standouts like Mushroom-Poblano quesadillas, Cauliflower Tacos, the Veggie Burrito Ahogado, and Queso Fundido with portobellos substituted for chorizo. In fact, PURE is always happy to accommodate vegans by omitting cheese from vegetarian dishes and servers have great suggestions for anyone with a special diet. PURE classics like chipotle chicken tostadas, empanadas of the day, corn masa turnovers, and a tres leches cake with house-made vanilla rum, strawberries, toasted coconut, and sugared almonds never disappoint…and tend to disappear as soon as they hit the table.

Even if you’re just stopping in for some chips and salsa, the options are impressive. Guajillo, Roasted Chile de Arbol, Morita, Cruda Tomatillo… there’s a whole menu of flavors to sample. And if you’re looking for a treat kids of any age will love, the Churros y Chocolate traditional Mexican doughnuts with cinnamon-sugar and chocolate pudding are a win for everyone. Sit back, and drink in the fun. No matter what you order, that’s what you’ll find at PURE.

The Scoop

INSIDE THE DECADENCE OF SOUTHERN CUSTARD

What do Mardi Gras, Darth Vader, and Fluffer Nutter have in common? They’ve all appeared on the flavor roster at Southern Custard, Brookhaven’s coolest, creamiest way to indulge. Need a sit-down pick-me-up after a play date with the kids, or a sweet way to end a date night? Southern Custard is there for you, with fresh, handmade flavors rotating daily, featuring selections like Chocolate Caramel Pretzel, Birthday Cake, Orange Ginger, and Andes Mint. Like the enduring classics they are, chocolate and vanilla are always on the menu, not just because they’re delicious on their own but because they’re the perfect backdrop for the mouthwatering menu of mix-ins. With a full toppings bar and options like concretes, sundaes, pies, and specialties like their poffertjes—mini Dutch pancakes with a scoop of your favorite flavor—and their signature affogato—creamy frozen custard drenched in espresso with a waffle cone wedge—it’s easy to see why Southern Custard quickly became Brookhaven’s go-to for desserts and treats. Just to sweeten the deal, the shop’s garage storefront opens onto the sidewalk during warm weather, where you’ll find outdoor seating.

My Thai 26 THAI KITCHEN & BAR

Against a backdrop of vibrant, bohemian Thai décor, the chefs at 26 Thai prepare farm-fresh sashimi, nigiri, and custom sushi rolls and authentic Bangkok cuisine with a modern twist. With a craft bar featuring handcrafted specialty cocktails and a wide selection of beer and wine, it’s easy to see why this restaurant has become as popular for romantic evenings as it is for business lunches. You’ll notice plenty of suits and jackets gathered around plates of Sai Oua, homemade Thai pork sausage with fresh ginger and roasted peanuts, and Five Hour Short Ribs, slow braised beef with green curry, on weekday afternoons. Couples and groups of friends gather in the evening over Black and White Rolls with torched smoked salmon, black tobiko, and 26 spicy sauce and Kao Soi, a northern style yellow curry with egg noodles, pickled mustard, and garlic chili paste, easily customized for vegetarians by subbing tofu for crispy chicken or jumbo shrimp.

The attention to detail that goes into the space also goes into each carefully chosen ingredient and recipe, guaranteeing an experience both authentic and elegant. Focusing on local and seasonal ingredients, the 26 Thai menu presents a full array of mouthwatering appetizers, entrées, and more, all served in style. Incorporating elements of traditional Thai cooking techniques and sushi perfection, 26 Thai masters the classics you already love and introduces you to new favorites.

If you’re torn between sushi and rice and noodle dishes, you have your work cut out for you; best to just give in and plan a trip for each. Dive into the perfectly executed maki and tempura rolls, or the in-demand fried soft-shell crab stir-fried with yellow curry, egg, and hot peppers. Regulars love the delectable Massaman curry with avocado, potatoes, and cashews. Be sure to sample their specialty small plates like Salmon Sashimi Larb with lime, shallot, onion, roasted ground rice, cilantro, and chili, and the Amaebi Shot: sweet shrimp, Thai chili-lime sauce, mint, and garlic. Around the World

INTERNATIONAL FLAVORS ON BUFORD HIGHWAY

It’s virtually impossible to narrow down the international options on Buford Highway, known not just regionally but nationally for its global, authentic flavors and cuisines. That said, here are a few local favorites to get you started. Go exploring on Buford Highway and find your own personal favorites–it’s time well spent for anyone with an appetite for adventure!

China Feng

One word you’ll hear frequently in conversations among first-time visitors to Buford Highway’s standout international restaurants is “unexpected.” Many superstars of this famous stretch of highway are tucked into shopping centers, names spelled out in simple block letters unadorned with logos or obvious branding. The atmospheres are casual, the décor is usually simple, and the kitchens are bustling.

Unassuming as the exterior may be, the cars in the parking lots are always a dead giveaway of what’s inside. At China Feng, in a small strip mall at the intersection of Curtis Drive, locals have been lining up for years for the famously ample and affordable lunch menu, house specialties, and takeaway.

While this Chinese restaurant’s fare includes all America’s favorites—like Sesame Chicken, Mongolian Beef, Pot Stickers, and Crab Rangoon––it also offers traditional provincial Chinese flavors like the Triple Delicacies (a mix of prawns, chicken, and scallops in a light, spicy house sauce) and Dragon & Phoenix (a half-and-half platter filled on one side with lobster and shrimp sautéed in white sauce and on the other with lightly battered and fried chicken in a hot, spicy sauce).

While the Chinese Braised Chicken Wings and BBQ Boneless Spare Ribs are standout favorites, this heavier fare is balanced by “Spa Cuisine,” focused on steamed vegetables and seafood. With an extensive soup menu and appetizers for every appetite, there’s literally something for everyone and every appetite, any time of day.

Havana Sandwich Shop

When Eddie Benedit opened Havana Sandwich Shop on Buford Highway in 1976, it was with a menu composed entirely of family recipes learned by heart growing up in the kitchen in Cuba. Today? It still is. The area’s first fullCuban restaurant continues to serve up some of the most flavorful food on Buford Highway, a neighborhood that sets the bar high for international cuisine. Their famous Cuban sandwich is, of course, a must for any sandwichlover, but Havana’s customers come back just as often for the empanadas, and sides like the ever-popular maduros (fried ripe plantains), tostones (fried green plantains), and yucca fries. Baditos (milkshakes) come in flavors like mango, guava, and papaya, and you can’t go wrong with a classic plate of succulently seasoned pork with rice and black bean soup for dinner.

Taqueria La Carreta

Taqueria La Carreta is a hole-in-the-wall treasure, home to some of the best mole sauce you’ll ever taste. Go for the enchiladas (with said sauce, of course), or bring a bunch of friends and sample some of everything you can get your hands on, from traditional carne asada tacos with cilantro, shaved radishes, and a squeeze of lime to fresh guacamole and salsa, chorizo, pozole, and house specialties like the ceviche tostada and huachinango a la diabla–spicy red snapper with rice. Pair with a cool michelada and call it a great day.

Kaleidoscope Bistro & Pub Spotlight

If you’re walking down Dresden Drive and notice a spacious, wrap-around patio with patrons accompanied by dogs, you’ve likely found yourself at Kaleidoscope Bistro & Pub. Delicious, wallet-friendly dishes (the owners describe the menu as “global comfort food,” and they’re not wrong), an extensive beer list, and a laid-back, friendly vibe make it a neighborhood go-to. While the dress code and ambience are casual, Kaleidoscope takes its approach to food and community seriously, using only antibiotic and hormone-free meats and eggs, sourced from local farms. Food and drink specials reflect what’s in season and change regularly–sometimes daily.

This eclectic combination is to the credit of Chef Joey Riley, whose passion for food overtook his passion for sports in college, when he turned down a soccer scholarship to attend the Culinary Institute of America in New York. (You can still catch games on Kaleidoscope’s big screen TVs, though.) His focus on combining flavors and perfecting technique without a hint of pretentiousness carries through in each item on the restaurant’s menu. “What makes a great chef is being able to come in day after day, doing the same things meticulously – whether peeling potatoes or developing recipes – and maintaining a passion and love for it,” he explains.

Guests are known to wax poetic on Kaleidoscope’s bottomless mimosas as well as their beer selection. If you’re dining with a group, be sure to order the Indian chicken curry samosas or poutine topped with ciderbacon gravy for the table. For dinner, it’s hard to pick just one or two standouts; the Korean BBQ rice bowl with brussels sprouts and egg is as mouthwatering and satisfying as the classic buttermilk fried chicken with pimento mac and cheese. As for lunch and brunch…just plan on coming back regularly for healthy, clean eating that tastes downright decadent or decadence that’s thoughtfully sourced and served with charm and cheer.

Secreto & Marlow’s Tavern

Though very different in ambience and menu style, many Brookhavenites frequent both Secreto and Marlow’s Tavern in Brookhaven’s Blackburn neighborhood regularly, for the simple reason that both places do what they do well, making it easy to follow your taste buds without traveling out of your way.

At Secreto, the farm-to-table, Southern-inspired cuisine is crafted around recipes handed down for generations, updated with modern touches to bring out unforgettable flavors. The “secret” at Secreto? A fine balance of authenticity and inspiration that comes together deliciously in house specialties like truffle deviled eggs, Faroe Island salmon with butternut squash, and warm buttermilk glazed carrot cake. And house specialties don’t stop with food–the drinks menu is full of gems: the barrel aged Black Manhattan and signature concoctions like What I’m Fixin’ to Do and Southern Passion are not just inventive for novelty’s sake, but seriously tasty as well. In a comfy setting as good for group events as it is for date night, Secreto is a delectable, not-so-secret Brookhaven find.

SPOTLIGHT
28 | B Magazine

Down the sidewalk at Marlow’s Tavern, you’ll find all the staples you’d expect at a sports bar, a diner, and a community watering hole. Marlow’s menu is full of pub fare with added flare, showcasing house-made takes on bar favorites like shrimp and crab nachos, roast turkey meatloaf with cauliflower purée, and burger options for every burger mood, including a vegetarian option. There’s even a kids’ menu for the under-pub-age crew.

Naturally, there’s a whole range of just-right drinks to go with everything, including a selection of more than a dozen Georgia craft beers. Wine and cocktail enthusiasts aren’t left behind, either: with an extensive wine list and mixed drinks like The Matrix featuring Ada Lovelace Gin and the New Fashioned with Belle Meade Bourbon, it’s no surprise Marlow’s has become synonymous with good times. They take community pride and support seriously, too, supporting Share Our Strength for over 20 years and donating 20% of every gift card purchase to No Kid Hungry. You can relax, kick back, and catch up knowing you’re also sharing the love with every sip and bite.

If you’re looking for a more city-centered excursion, a walk through Oglethorpe University’s campus is more than a recommendation for visitors looking at schools, it’s a community tradition and a great way to spend an afternoon. The Oglethorpe Museum of Art is a true gem in the greater Atlanta area’s arts scene, Buford Highway’s collection of stunning murals lining streets and tucked into unexpected nooks is a gem in the greater Atlanta area’s art scene, as is The Oglethorpe Museum of Art (be sure to visit museum.oglethorpe.edu or call 404-364-8555 for hours).
