UNION OF STUDENTS IN IRELAND MARKS WORLD MENTAL HEALTH DAY 2020 WITH DAY OF ACTION AND LETTER TO MINISTER SIMON HARRIS USI also welcomes publication of National Student Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Framework
To mark World Mental Health Day 2020 (October 10), the Union of Students in Ireland and Students’ Unions across the island ran a day of online action aiming to shed light on student mental health and highlight how looking after your mental health is intrinsic to overall well-being. USI is also welcoming the publication on the day of the National Student Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Framework, which the union and its members were proud to be involved in producing. The focus of USI actions on World Mental Health Day was support and connecting with one another – from raising awareness of services that are available to students and the wider population, to checking-in with family, friends and the wider college community, to reaching out and asking for professional help when needed. USI sat on the working group and played a key role in developing the National Student Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Framework, which is set to have a transformative impact on how everyone in higher education views and supports student mental health. USI President, Lorna Fitzpatrick said: “We very much welcome the publication of this strategy today. It is the product of a number of key organisations working together to achieve a holistic, whole-campus approach. We believe supporting student mental health is something that each of us in a campus community is responsible for, it is not just a task for counselling or health services. For this strategy to be effective, it needs to have a partnered approach whereby staff and students work together. This is clear in the recommendation for an implementation group to be established at each HEI to include students/student representatives. The USI National Report on Student Mental Health has played a central role in the development of this strategy and I want to again thank every student who shared their stories to help us get to this point.” USI has also marked World Mental Health Day by writing to Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, Simon Harris; Minister for Health, Stephen Donnelly; and Minister of State for Mental Health, Mary Butler to reiterate the need for sustainable, annual core funding to be provided to expand and secure, accessible and fully-funded student mental health services. USI Vice President for Welfare, Clare Austick said: “The announcement of €5 million funding to support student mental health and wellbeing was welcomed by USI in August. It was much-needed funding that was required urgently before the pandemic and is needed more than ever now. It will support the student counselling services to tackle waiting lists and will go a long way towards supporting valuable student support work. In the letter to Minister Harris, we again welcome that funding but also outline the need for annual, sustainable funding to be committed to this important area.” As part of the World Mental Health Day 2020 activity, USI and Students’ Unions across Ireland will publicise socially distanced candlelit photo-shoots held outside their colleges highlighting the mental illnesses students reported having in USI’s Student Mental Health report published in late 2019, and how they can be supported. Considering one in four people struggle with their mental health, the aim is to illustrate the scale and different types of mental illnesses and destigmatise the negative associations attached to them. Another aim is to emphasise to students the importance of looking after your mental health on an on-going basis.

The SFI Research Image of the Year 2020 has been won by a multidisciplinary team of researchers from CIT’s CAPPA and BioExplore research centres, MeSSO research group and CIT Blackrock Castle Observatory. As Minister Simon Harris (Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science) commented, “A brilliant image and a powerful message. Wear a mask!”. The image reinforces the message that was adopted early in CIT, that masks can be highly effective at suppressing transmission of Covid-19. Credit to the Covid-19 Response Team, Paul Gallagher and Janice Hegener in particular. Funding for the research team came from the SFI Covid-19 Rapid Response fund. A compact team consisting of Steven Darby, Milosz Przyjalgowski, Liam Lewis, Roy Sleator, Paddy McGowan, Helen O’Shea, Alan Giltinan, Clair McSweeney, Danielle Wilcox and Danielle Burke and Niall Smith. The winning image named “Talking Heads”, is really apt, a title conceived by Dr. Liam Lewis, Head of CAPPA. Covid-19 has not gone away, but we do know much about how to slow it. And as the image shows, wearing a mask is a really great asset.

Class Reps Election & Training Congratulations to the 240+ elected class representatives this academic year! Without a doubt it is a very challenging year, but it is clear from the level of students participation so far this academic year, the state of our union is strong. On November 2, 2020, first time and first year Class Reps had the opportunity to meet the Executive Branch of CIT SU and engaged with a wonderful line up of guest speakers. Class Reps were able to get an insight into what CIT Students’ Union is really about, the function and engagement of the Union of Students in Ireland (USI) and also what services are available to our students in CIT. Newly elected class Reps also had the opportunity to attend NStep Training to support them within their role. Once again, the CITSU Executive Team would like to say congratulations and best of luck to all newly elected and returning Class Reps for a fantastic year ahead.

Pride Week CIT SU joined in the celebrations of Pride Week from October 1923, and took the opportunity to wish everyone a very Happy Pride Week! CIT Students’ Union, CIT management and various committee’s joinned together to raise the Pride Flag, celebrating Cork Pride Week 2020, and sent out warm wishes and reaffirmation to our colleagues in support of the LGBTQ+ community in CIT and the winder community. We also joined An Garda Siochana in sending out solidarity to
the LGBTQ+ community. CIT SU stand strongly in support of the LGBTQ+ Community and we will continue to work towards a more inclusive & diverse college. He writes the popular mental health blog called ‘Thoughts Too Big’. DA SILLY HEADS STIGMA IS SILLY
(an interactive workshop with animation and real life stories) Bio:
Thursday 12th Nov, 1 - 2pm
The execution of the workshop is delivered by using a mix of real stories, animation, education & humour to bring a high level of value to the participants. The animation we use is a set of cartoon characters called Da Silly Heads, each depicting a mental health condition we are personally living with or have experienced. These characters interact with each other to tell our story, which can be viewed on our Instagram page. Da Silly Heads gave us a chance to externalize the labels and restrictions so often associated with a poor mental health experience. For the purposes of this workshop, we use Da Silly Heads as a visual aid to add some exciting engagement to the delivery. Participants will be invited to partake in some light activities including brainstorming different methods of visual advocacy, light switching demonstration, explore feedback and alternative strategies for advocating as well as a Q&A session at the end of the workshop. We add humor to workshop by interacting with the Da Silly Heads, using social media trends to highlight some elements.

Student Alumni Ambassador Co-ordinator for 2020-2021 Hi, my name is Joshua Manaid and I am a third-year Business student. Outside of the classroom, I am the Chairperson and team leader of Enactus CIT and President of the Filipino Youth Association of Cork. I also previously served as Chairperson of the CIT Korean society. I work for the Doyle Collection as a Food and Beverage Attendant at the River Lee Hotel. This is my second year being involved in the Student Alumni Ambassador Programme and I am excited to work with the new team!

Hi, my name is Lauren Chaney O’Riordan from Cork. I am 20 years old and I am in second year of Culinary Arts. I am the Class Rep of our class this year and the treasurer of the photography society. I love drawing, gaming, reading, cooking, baking, and going on adventures. I was interested in becoming a Student Alumni Ambassador because of the many benefits that this position can give such as networking, new skills and gaining knowledge that can be constantly attained.

I am a second year Bachelor of Business student in CIT and this is my second year acting as a Student Alumni Ambassador. I applied for the position last year because I wanted to get involved and be an active member of the CIT community and I enjoyed it so much that I applied again this year. The first event I attended last year as an ambassador was the STEM South West event in Rochestown Park Hotel. There was a great atmosphere that evening, and I met a lot of interesting people including other Ambassadors. I also assisted during the Empowering Women Event for International Women’s Day. Even though I was working at this event, I had the opportunity to hear the inspiring women who came to speak on the day. I have absolutely enjoyed my experience as an ambassador so far and cannot wait to participate in the programme again this year. It allows you to make new friends, develop new skills and enjoy some fun experiences which you may not always get the opportunity to participate.
ZOE BURTON
My name is ZoĂŤ Bruton and I am a 23-year-old fourth year student studying Theatre and Drama studies in CIT Cork School of Music. I am originally from Cork but moved to Roscommon when I was four and then moved back to Cork when I was 14. I have three sisters and two brothers: I will be the first in my family to finish college. My mother will be second to finish college as she is in her second year studying Horticulture in CIT. My interest in Drama came as a surprise to me. I wanted to do a course after school that was not book orientated and that would be fun and memorable. Something out of the ordinary. I applied for the course but unfortunately was not successful first-time round. I was persistent and I enrolled in Colaiste Stiofan Naofa (CSN) before being accepted to the CIT CSM. I am in my fourth year more determined than ever. My aim is to receive a first-class honours degree. What am I going to do after? I am really interested in working with languages, so I want to be fluent in at least three by the time I am thirty (English, Italian and Portuguese hopefully). I will use my degree in future, but I want to obtain an array of skills that are not just dedicated to acting, like the languages for example. I want to have as many random skills as I can and be the best, I can be at them.

Hi, my name is Thomas Ariyibi and I am a second year IT Management (Hons) student from Tralee in Co Kerry. I enjoy watching and playing football and am the Project Manager for Enactus CIT as Project Manager for the third year. I love Business and Enterprise and I work as a Sales Consultant in Carphone Warehouse. The main reason I applied for the Student Alumni Ambassador Programme is to connect students to graduates of CIT and help build a healthy environment for this to happen. The programme will help build my leadership skills and make long term relationships with people inside and outside of CIT. I am excited to develop a programme of activities this year through the Student Alumni Ambassador Programme.

The APPrentice competition has been run by CIT’s Hincks Centre for Entrepreneurship Excellence and the School of Business for the last number of years in association with CIT’s Innovation Week. Innovation Week 2021 will run from the 1st to 5th of March 2021. The aim of the competition is to inspire students to set up new and interesting APP ideas. You don’t have to create the App - just come up with a great App Idea! There are a wide variety of categories such as agriculture, health and leisure, food, etc., so, whatever your idea we welcome you to enter and be in with the chance of winning some great prizes for Best App Idea, Best Poster and Runners Up. Enter as many APP Ideas as you like. Finalists will be chosen from all entries. The competition is open to all CIT and ITT students and FETAC students from Cork Colleges Progression Scheme; Coláiste Stiofáin Naofa, St. John’s Central College, Cork College of Commerce, Kinsale College of Further Education and CityNorth College. Each finalist will collaborate with poster design students to create a poster representing their APP idea. The posters will be exhibited at a virtual showcase during Innovation Week. Lee Valley Part 2: An Gaeltacht Muscrai
L
ast time, I wrote about the joys and pleasures of visiting the Lee Valley using my native Macroom as a centre for exploring the area and its many points of interest. Now I am going to send ye all on Westwards by 10 miles from my home town to: An Gaeltacht Muscrai. With the village of Ballyvourney (Baile Bhuirne) as the centre of exploration. Yes, there are other Irish speaking regions other than Dingle and Connemara, and the Cork Gaeltacht is a region steeped in beauty, history, heritage and culture. From Ballyvourney, one can start by turning through the various roads that will take you 5 miles south to: 1. Kilnamartyra (Cill Na Martra) This is one of Ireland’s oldest villages that has its roots in ancient times, and its elevated location allows a pristine view of the Derrynasaggart and Boggeragh Mountains, along with Mangerton in Co. Kerry. There is a church, the GAA grounds, two pubs and a shop/post office, but the highlight of the visit has to be the Prince August Toy Soldier Factory Workshop, where diecast tin toy soldiers from the ages in history are made, along with figures and themes from fantasy fiction (e.g. Game Of Thrones). Up to recently, there was a whole display of the Battle of Waterloo (1814) in all its spectacular glory. The produce is for export in the European Markets and therefore this is the only place where you can purchase these wonderful items. Local crafts are also made there and there is kiddies themed events held through out the year. Admission is free. (www.princeaugust.com) 2. Ballingeary (Beal Atha an Ghaorthaidh) As you leave Killnamartyra and head west towards Reananaree, you will go through a pass that will afford you a view of the county all the way to the city on a clear day. Head down the hills and you will then enter Ballingeary village. This is a picturesque village that has an Irish Summer College, and there is many walks that will take you to Lough Allua and its beautiful views as well! There are many cycling routes that can allow you to explore a more rural aspect of County Cork. 3. Gougane Barra (Guagan Barra) An absolute gem that cannot be ignored, it is a mere 3 mile drive from Ballingeary and involves taking a junction turn on the road to Bantry. This is where the source of the River Lee evolves, and its most iconic landmark is St Finbarr’s Monastery that lies on the Lough as the Shehy Mountains that border Cork with Kerry surround the secluded area. There is also a Forest Park where many strenuous walks can be challenged but afford some spectacular views that are well worth it all year round.
4. Coolea (Cuil Aodha) As you turn back towards the Pass and go the various back ways and enjoy their sights (there are plenty of signposts so you will not get lost!), you will enter the historic village of Coolea. This is where most of the AngloIrish War movie ‘The Wind That Shakes The Barley’ was filmed there and the village is famous for Gaeltacht poet Sean O’Riada, Coolea Cheese and an outdoor swimming pool that is used all year, especially on Xmas! 5. Ballyvourney (Baile Bhuirne) Finally, finish off with your destination! The village is rich in history, starting with the Well of St. Gobnait, the patron saint of bees, who set up her religious order there and has been said to have met nine white deer that inspired her in her work. The ancient monastery lies in the top of Ballyvourney Wood with its many walks. There is also a library in the village along with a bookshop, and there is many local industries there, highlighting the importance of the Gaeltacht to the economy. But you can stay the night in the Mills Inn, where the legendary proprietor, brewer, fisherman and biker Don O’Leary and his wife Gobnait Quill (Quills Woolen Mills) will put you up in Old World Boutique surroundings and delicious food and drink! Don also runs the 9 White Deer Brewery where a wide range of delicious craft beer can be consumed, and before you head off back to Cork, pop into An Siopa in the car park, where they will set you home with a wide range of food, drink, craft and fashion! WOTS DA CIT-UATION DERE? So, the esteemed CIT President Dr. Barry O’Connor will be retiring at the end of the year. We might as well cherish him while he is still there, especially in these anxious times. Because when my tenure as a student was ending, back in the CITSU 2017 Awards, I had the most memorable moment with the good doctor, who was Vice President at the time. The CIT Tourism Building, April 2017, in one of the many charity coffee mornings that was being held, I was tucking into my feast of Tea and Cakes when Dr. Barry approached me and asked with warmth was I keeping well. I knew he wanted to say something to me; he was so tempted. (Hopefully he was going to prescribe a bakery here, I thought; the cakes were so delicious!) That evening, the awards were announced and when Dr. Barry announced that I had won the prestigious CIT Presidential Citation Award for my achievements and contribution to CITSU and College Life, I screamed, “WHAT??!!” and nearly

Dr. Barry and I would continue to meet; he is an esteemed traveller and I have looked after him in Cork Airport where I work many times! A gentleman who not only does not forget his roots but is one we can relate to with his own taste of adventure! So let us all do our bit to ensure his retirement will not be Goodbye, because when you have these moments with good people like Barry, we will cherish each other forever and return to each other in the spirit of welcome once again!
