A busy Student Centre during Freshers Week

Here is a small flavour of some of the initiatives and projects we have been working on over the past number of weeks and months.

NEW GYM EQUIPMENT

The Students’ Union brought forward a proposal to student finance to upgrade the gym equipment.

The student finance committee approved this proposal and we are sure the students of CIT will reap the rewards of this fantastic new equipment. We would also like to thank Norma and all the staff in the CIT gym for lending their expertise and for supporting this initiative.

UPGRADED COMMON ROOM

The Students’ Union put forward a proposal to student finance to upgrade and modernise the existing common room and again, the incredibly student centric student finance committee supported the initiative and have allocated funding to invest in and modernise the common room. We will see this completed in the next two months and we are confident it will make a huge difference to college life.

BE SAFE DAY

Be Safe Day took place on Thursday 12th in the Main Corridor. There was Representatives from An Garda Síochána, Sexual Health Centre, Students’ Union and LINC. Engagement with these services was high.

MENTAL HEALTH

We are delighted to announce that “Da Silly Heads” are on board with

the SU for the full year. As seen during Freshers Week “Da Silly Heads” have a table set up on main corridor selling their hats, money will go towards a specific mental health focused project on campus to benefit both students and staff. They will also have a table set up in the Main corridor/Nexus for every campaign this year. They also have a plan to promote mental health advocacy, peer to peer dialogue and inclusivity throughout the campus.

CLASS REP TRAINING WE’RE RECRUITING YOU!

In order that the right decisions are made, to benefit all, we need the voices of our students to be heard in the boardrooms! Class Reps are an integral element in the decisionmaking process of the college and we here at the Students’ Union want to ensure that our students are the forefront of any decisions made. The team will spend the first few weeks of Semester 1 recruiting CIT’s Class Reps. We hope to get to as many classes as possible to facilitate the class elections. The Students’ Union needs Class Reps to act as the chief

spokesperson for their class. One of the main duties of a Class Rep is to liaise with academic staff and report back to the SU Executive at Union Council Meetings regarding any issues, concerns or ideas that their class might have. The Class Rep acts as an important link between both staff and students but can also choose to organise class bonding events to encourage a healthy balance between academic and social lives of their classmates! It is an absolute privilege to be elected to represent your classmates and it could stand to you in future job interviews! So, stand out from the crowd, look after your buddies and join us in CIT SU. Class Rep Training has been organised this year in Killarney, we have the accommodation, transport, food, and night on the town sorted, we just need the Reps!

USI Calls on Government to Break the Barriers of Third Level Education This week, Ministers for both Education and Higher Education, Joe McHugh and Mary Mitchell O’Connor have released statements downplaying the levity of the accommodation and higher education funding crisis in Ireland.

The Union of Students in Ireland have been campaigning on these issues, year on year consistently and it is disappointing to find that the Ministers in charge of the education system in Ireland have not yet learned just how severe the situation at hand has gotten.

The Union of Students in Ireland has developed a multi-pronged approach to place pressure on the Government in the coming months, ahead of the Budget. We will be engaging with local elected representatives, TD’s and Senators in the coming months ahead of an action on the streets of Dublin on 3rd October.

USI calls on both students and their parents to join the national student movement in the fight against unaffordable fees and student housing.

We call on people to immediately get in touch with your local representatives and demand that they do all they can to ensure: • A publicly funded education system is put in place • Student housing becomes affordable and plentiful, • The SUSI Grant is increased to reflect the rising costs of student life.

ASK FOR ANGELA

CIT Students’ Union have been working with the Gardaí, UCC, Cork County Council and publicans to raise awareness around this initiative. Ask for Angela is a code word campaign that supports people who feel unsafe or intimidated while on a night out.

The initiative began in Lincolnshire in England in 2016 and received a lot of positive feedback internationally, and since then has been introduced in parts of Ireland. First rolled out in Waterford in November 2017, Cork County Council has now also backed the campaign. The Gardaí fully support the roll-out of this campaign nationwide.

HOW DOES ASK FOR ANGELA WORK?

Whether you are on a night out with friends, meeting someone through a dating app for the first time, or on a date that just is not working out, if you are uncomfortable and need some support, Ask for Angela can help.

You can go up to the bar or a member of staff and ask for ‘Angela’. The code word lets bar staff know if you are feeling uncomfortable and need a way to get out of your situation.

The staff member will discreetly separate you from the person and talk to you to find the best way to deal with the situation. They may call you a taxi so you can get home safely, or remove the person from the bar or nightclub.

Raising awareness about the Ask for Angela campaign is crucial and this year CIT Students’ Union have committed to increasing efforts to ensure that all students are aware of this excellent initiative.

CONSENT TEA PARTY

The theme of this sexual consent awareness event is a ‘tea party’ - using the simple analogy “consent is as easy as a cup of tea”.

As part of this year’s Sexual Health and Guidance Campaign, The Students’ Union will host a tea party grounded in talk about consent and healthy boundaries.

FREE cups of tea/coffee will be supplied by the Students’ Union and supported by Cork Sexual Violence Centre and City Council. The area will be decorated with bunting to draw attention to the event and reinforce the message.

Mary Crilly from the Sexual Violence Centre will also provide temporary tattoos at the event and members of the Gardaí, students and staff present will wear the spiral shaped temporary tattoos. See timetable on page 9.

What is CONSENT?

What is consent?

In all circumstances where we are intimate with someone consent needs to be established first. When having sex, consent is an agreement between all participants that they definitely want to have sex, or do any sexual act. Everyone needs to fully and clearly agree to it and their consent must be continuous for the duration of sex. This means that they have the right to change their mind at any time, for any reason, without any consequences.

Consent is needed for vaginal, anal or oral sex, mutual masturbation, sexual touching or kissing. Consent can be expressed both verbally and physically - so it can be with words, as well as actions and body language. It must be enthusiastic, conscious and voluntary. Consent should be given freely without any manipulation, convincing or threats.

If consent is not expressed, this is not sex - it is assault.

Below are some scenarios in which consent is needed. Thinking about situations like these before they arise will help us to ensure we understand when our partners are consenting or not.

Understanding consent in different situations...

Consent with a partner James and Anna have been going out for three months and have begun having sex. Anna has said that she only wants to have sex with James once he is wearing a condom.

One night while they are having sex James takes off the condom saying it doesn’t feel comfortable and then goes to have sex with Anna again.

Does James have consent from Anna in this situation?

At the beginning of this situation James has Anna’s consent, Anna wants to have sex with him but only when he is wearing a condom. Once James has taken off the condom he no longer has Anna’s permission to continue having sex with her. In this situation Anna’s consent was conditional to James always wearing a condom.

Consent on a one-night stand Mark and Jack meet on a night out and decide to go home. They are

both drunk and when they get into Mark’s apartment, Jack sits on the couch as Mark goes to the bathroom. When Mark comes back into the sitting room, Jack is asleep. Mark tries to wake up Jack by kissing his neck and rubbing his crotch.

Have both Mark and Jack consented to this situation?

No. Although Jack agreed to come home with Mark, once he is asleep Mark has no right to touch Jack in a sexual way. Mark may view this as a romantic or playful way to wake up Jack, but Jack is drunk and asleep and cannot consent to letting Mark touch or kiss him.

Consent in a new relationship Amy and Michelle have started dating and had sex one night previously.

The next week they are in Michelle’s house watching a movie and begin kissing. Amy tries to unbutton Michelle’s jeans and Michelle lets her, but as Amy puts her hands down Michelle’s underwear Michelle goes stiff and stops kissing Amy back.

Do both Amy and Michelle consent to sexual touching and kissing?

No. Although Amy and Michelle have had sex before and at the beginning of the evening Michelle seems to be enjoying kissing and touching, once her body language changes Amy must stop what she is doing. In this situation Amy should ask Michelle is she is okay, enjoying what they are doing and if she wants to continue.

If Michelle seems hesitant or unsure about her answer Amy should not continue as consent needs to be enthusiastic and voluntary.

Consent between friends Sean, Josh and Jess are in Josh’s house. Jess is telling Josh and Sean how she has just gotten her nipple pierced and asks them if they want to see it. They say yes and she shows them. Josh then asks Jess if he can touch the piercing and she says yes.

After Josh has touched it Sean then goes to touch the piercing too.

Did everyone consent in this situation?

No, Jess has not consented for Sean to touch her in this situation. Jess agreed to show Sean and Josh her piercing and for Josh to touch it.

Sean did not ask Jess whether he could also touch the piercing and

therefore does not have her consent.

Sexting consent Rachel and Scott are in a long-distance relationship. They only get to see each other every two months and often send each other sexual messages and naked photos. Rachel was talking to her friends about their relationship and showed them a naked photo of Scott.

Did Scott consent to Rachel showing other people his photo?

No, Scott did not consent to have his naked photo seen by anyone else but Rachel. Although Scott sent the naked photo of himself freely to Rachel it does not mean that she has the right to show that photo to anyone else.

Oral sex consent Niamh and Conor are in bed and Conor asks Niamh if she wants to have sex with him. She says that she wants to have oral sex but does not want to have vaginal sex. Conor wants to have vaginal sex so they discuss the topic and then agree to only have oral sex.

Did both Conor and Niamh consent to the sex they had in this situation?

Yes, in this situation Niamh was not comfortable with one type of sex that Conor wanted to have but was comfortable with another. They spoke about the situation and agreed together only to have oral sex.

Consent with an asexual partner Aoife and Maeve have been dating for three months now. Maeve is asexual and does not often feel sexually attracted to other people or want to have sex. She does experience romantic attraction and enjoys dating and being emotionally intimate with a partner. Maeve has told Aoife that she has had sex in the past and sometimes doesn’t mind it, but she does not currently have an interest in having sex. Maeve and Aoife agree that they both enjoy cuddling and kissing together.

Have Maeve and Aoife established consent in this situation?

Yes, in this scenario Maeve and Aoife agree that they both are happy to kiss and cuddle. If they want to engage in other forms of physical

intimacy in the future, more discussion will be needed to establish consent and each others’ boundaries.

Why would someone have sex if they don’t want to?

Sometimes people comply with having sex. Complying when having sex is when a person puts pressure on themselves to do something they are not comfortable with. Although the pressure comes from within themselves, not from whoever they are with, this can still be a sort of violation. People may comply for a number of reasons such as wanting to please their partner, fear of rejection or lack of confidence to say no. Another example might be where a couple are in a relationship and one person doesn’t want to have sex a certain night, the other says OK but then sulks and is short tempered afterwards. Next time the first person agrees because they do not want to deal with the sulks again. In this scenario we would have to question if there was consent, as consent must be enthusiastic, conscious and voluntary.

What does Irish law say about consent?

In Ireland the legal age of consent to sex is 17. Consensual sex with anyone under the age of 17 may be legally referred to as statutory rape. What this means is, even if the person has consented to sex themselves, their consent is not considered legally valid because they are underage.

Sentences The maximum sentence for having sex with someone over the age of 15, but under the age of 17, is five years.

It is ten years if the person is in a position of authority i.e. a relative, teacher, sports trainer. If a person can prove that they believed the victim was over the age of 17, however, the court may view this situation differently. Asserting that the person consented to sex is absolutely not considered a valid defence. Currently, women under the age of 17 cannot be prosecuted for having sex with someone under the age of 17. It is illegal to have sex with anyone under the age of 15 years of

age. It is considered a criminal offence under the Criminal Law (Sexual Offences) Act 2006. The maximum sentence for this is life imprisonment.

If a person can prove that they believed the person was over the age of 15 however, the court may view this situation differently. Once you are over the age of 17, you are legally able to have sex with anyone you want, even someone much older than you.

SETTLING INTO CIT Over the past few weeks we, the Good Start Ambassadors, have met thousands of students from many different courses and all walks of life. We were delighted to welcome you to CIT, and we are so thrilled to see you beginning to se�le in here.

We asked a few of you how your experience has been so far, and this is what you said: "CIT seems really student orientated" "I'm finding that I really like it and finding my classes is easier than I thought it would be" "My course is so much fun because there is so much variety, it’s great."

We’ve seen lots of change in the atmosphere around the different CIT campuses throughout the first three weeks. First years walking around CIT now don’t look half as in�midated as they did walking into Registra�on on their first day. We’re sure you can see it too, even just by looking around, people in general seem a lot less tense, seem to know where they are going and are beginning to relax into the flow of things.

STRIKING A BALANCE It’s been an absolute whirlwind since Registra�on, and we are finally ge�ng used to juggling classes, studying, part-�me work, keeping healthy, socialising and ge�ng enough sleep (hope you are too!). This is why the theme for our final week of Good Start is ‘Striking a Balance’. Being successful in college is all about finding a balance!

Here’s how the semester typically goes for us, so we imagine it’ll be similar for you… you’re a�ending all your classes, you’ve signed up for a few different clubs and socie�es, you might have a part �me job, you’re going out socialising on a Thursday night and just about managing it all, when, all of a sudden, you’re landed with an assignment! Straight away you begin to think, “how in the world am I going to manage all of this?”

Spoiler alert – You’ll be grand, it is possible to do it all.

Figuring out how to manage your �me will make everything seem more achievable. Have you thought about planning out your �me and making a study plan? Do.

WHAT WORKS...

It’s �me to get organised and stay organised.

Here’s what works: 1. Keep on top of your assignments and con�nuous assessments from the beginning, it will pay off come hand-up or exam �me. You won’t be sorry you spent the �me on them.

2. Ea�ng well and staying hydrated will keep your energy levels up and make concentra�ng in class so much easier.

3. Get outside to get some fresh air and exercise, it always helps towards achieving and maintaining a posi�ve outlook.

It’s also important to know that you’re never alone in CIT, the chances are that if you’re stressed about college assignments or feeling like there aren’t enough hours in the day, someone else is feeling the exact same way (probably even in your class group). A problem shared really is a problem halved so, talk. Talk to your friends, you family, your classmates or lecturers.

There are also services that might be able to help you such as the Academic Learning Centre, Academic Success Coaching and the Counselling Service.

The Academic Learning Centre or the ‘ALC’ is located in D249 and allows students to seek out extra help and support for par�cular modules and topics. Free academic subject support

sessions are run on a con�nuous weekly basis throughout the academic year in Mathema�cs and Sta�s�cs, Physics, Programming, Networking, Electronics, Economics, Chemistry, Financial Accoun�ng, Management Accoun�ng, Mechanics, and Thermofluids. WHAT’S BEEN IN THE HEADLINES…

Flynner’s Flying Column

THE INCREDIBLE WUSS? On my Flying Column Special dated March 2017, I advertised for a ‘Superhero To Save The World’. And The Incredible Hulk fell amongst the lowest likely to gain the position, due to his senselessness, relative stupidity and inability to control his emotions being the factor. And here we have Boris Johnson announcing that all he needs is the emotions to trigger him, and he can break Britain from its shackles, straight out of the EU! Just like the Incredible Hulk!

And suddenly, when he gets his opportunity when meeting EC President Jean-Claude-Juncker, he storms out, and skips the official press conference – the perfect opportunity for the emotions to test The Hulk’s mettle. Incredible Sulk/Wuss/Whatever!!

And was Boris’s remarks of “being in shackles” an admission of the situation himself and his fellow Brexiteers have managed to delude themselves, and Britain into?

And all the while, the Brexit Clock is ticking, and the political parties across Britain are getting the knifes out to capitalise on whatever will happen come the deadline. It will be interesting to see whether the EU will be more accepting of whatever will come out of this, even if Remain emerges triumphant.

NOT WORTH A TRIP TO THE BARGAIN BIN… FOR ONCE Convicted drug mule Michaela McCollum, one of the Peru Two, jailed over there in 2013 for 3 years for smuggling cocaine from there to Ibiza, has decided to release her autobiography, detailing her experiences. Setting a better example? Showing remorse? I do not think so.

There are plenty of criminal and irresponsible people who have enough cynicism to try and hope they can profit from ordinary people for their very misdeeds. The first criminal to write such a memoir and to profit handsomely from such was German architect and Nazi Industry and Armaments Minister, Albert Speer, (one of the intellectuals), who, convicted at the Nuremburg Trials for using forced labour (leading to millions of deaths), managed to weasel himself from the gallows (his subordinate, Fritz Sauckel was the one, amongst 10 others who got the noose in his place) and escape with a 20 year sentence.

While in prison, Speer wrote his memoirs that was published as ‘Inside The Third Reich’ after his release from Spandau in 1966. VOLUNTEER ABROAD

On Thursday the 4th of July 2019, I arrived in Mozambique with the Serve Volunteer Organisation. Myself and 10 other volunteers worked alongside our partner, Young Africa where we found out more about all the amazing work being done in Mozambique.

Young Africa offers an innovative high impact solution to youth unemployment. The organisation runs skills centres, youth employment programmes and community activities in Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Botswana and Zambia. Their mission is to empower young people through skills training for employability and entrepreneurship.

On the 14th of March 2019, before we arrived, Mozambique’s city of Beira was severely destroyed by cyclone Idai which killed dozens and affected hundreds and thousands of people. Seeing this heartbreaking news meant we really didn’t know what to expect when we arrived. To my surprise much of the damage caused by the cyclone was being repaired and Beira was beginning to rebuild thanks to foreign aid. Within the walls of Young Africa Beira, there was still visible water damage to the upper floor of the girls hostel and a fallen fence, however much of the campus where we slept had remained intact and almost all of the dozen or so workshops were back to full function.

One of the things that stood out to me the most was the culture of the Mozambicans. Everyone was very welcoming and happy despite experiencing first hand the devastating impact of cyclone Idai. Each morning we were greeted with welcoming warm smiles and a “Bom Dia” or good morning in Portuguese. The music brought our evenings alive, even at the daily assembly there was often a song among announcements. The youth are also heavily involved in sports at Young Africa and the students are encouraged to play football, basketball and volleyball in between classes.

At the beginning of the month we did a lot of construction work building a wall that separated the girls youth hostel and the Young Africa campus. This involved taking down old fences, digging up trenches and pulling up some trees. This was a completely new and challenging experience for me and the rest of the volunteers

as we had never done any construction work before! We got to interact with many of the Mozambican students every day which I enjoyed immensely.

Towards the end of the month we worked on building a medical and counselling centre on the Dondo campus which included levelling foundations for the walls and building the pillar supports. I enjoyed building teamwork skills and even learnt a bit of Portuguese as we worked alongside the students of Young Africa every step of the way. The Young Africa students had an inspirational level of work ethic and were always uplifting and in good spirits.

The students were always eager to learn and wanted to work to the best of their ability even if it was a simple task like collecting the sand and stones for cement.

The highlight of my experience at Mozambique would definitely have to be witnessing the impact we brought to the campus through the money we fundraised. With the culmination of all the volunteers efforts we managed to fund new guard houses, a toilet block in Dondo, a new basketball court and a sports day for the locals in Beira. Seeing the happiness on the local children’s faces when they had their face painted or chatted with us is something I will never forget.

We did development education in the evening where we produced a video based on Sustainable Development Goal 13 which is responsible for climate action. This was fascinating and really made us reflect on how lucky we are to live in a country that has very few natural disasters in Ireland. Throughout my time in Mozambique I had experienced and seen a completely different culture, met an amazing group of people along the way and I can honestly say it was one of the greatest experiences of my life. It was also quite refreshing taking out four weeks of my life to work on a project outside my comfort zone and detach myself from my close minded perspective of the world. This experience has certainly taught me a lot of life lessons, made me a more grateful individual and I can’t wait to do more volunteering abroad in the future!

CIT profiles Wishing a warm welcome to our Sport Changes Life Victory Scholars, Aryn McClure and Peter Hoffmann. As part of the Sport Changes Life movement, elite athletes from the United States of America are selected to complete their Masters in Ireland and at the same timework in local community to raise the aspirations of young people in sport. All this while playing the sport they love!

Both Aryn and Peter have excelled in their respective sport, basketball and will be studying and competing for CIT basketball club for this years’ league and intervarsity titles. At Superleague level, Aryn will be competing with Brunell Basketball Club -Basketball Ireland Cup finalists 2018/19 while Peter will tog out with Neptune Basketball Club. When did you start playing basketball and why do you love it?

I officially started playing basketball when I was 10 years old. I fell in love with basketball because it played a critical component in my development as a child and made me who I am today. This sport has allowed me to break out of my timid personality as a kid and meet lifelong friends. I have been blessed with many opportunities in life such as receiving a Division 1 scholarship, a college degree, and traveling to Ireland. This sport is a major blessing in my life and I would not be as successful as I am today without it.

My favourite musician is Rhianna and my favourite actors are Denzel Washington and Tom Hanks.

In my free time, I like to binge watch old movies such as Film noir classics.

What are your hopes/ambitions for the year ahead in Cork?

My hopes/ambitions for this year in Cork would be to enlighten the children of Ireland with the different opportunities that sports has to offer around the world. Help influence the children of Ireland with positivity and encouragement through whatever journey they are pursuing in life!
