GRAND PLANS UNDERFOOT FOR WILDERNESS WANDERERS

Brisbane’s best secrets aren’t found in a guidebook, they’re whispered by the locals. Three Brissy insiders share where they eat, drink and unwind in the city they call home.
WORDS: SONYA GELLERT

KATRINA MEYNINK
Columnist, cookbook author and children’s book author
“For my morning coffee, I head to Blackout in Paddington – it’s my always-and-forever place. And for a wine, it has to be the small bar hidden inside the Wine Experience shop in Rosalie. Imagine a pull-up-a-chair sort of situation. It’s low-key with great wine and is lots of fun.
At the back end of the Brisbane Botanic Gardens Mount Coot-tha is a small Japanese garden. Here, you enter through an archway to find the most beautiful spot. This garden is without a doubt one of my favourite go-to places for some time out and greenery.
The best pasta in Brisbane, hands down, comes from Ripiena, Fortitude Valley – it’s no-frills and fantastic. For a nice dinner or lunch, I’ve always loved Gerard’s Bistro on James Street, Fortitude Valley. It’s so consistent. I’ve also become a big fan of the new kid on the block, 075 Pinsa Romana, New Farm, for a slice of Roman-style pizza.”

PHOEBE PARADISE
Multi-disciplinary artist, musician and designer
“The Australian Cinémathèque at GOMA is one of the coolest things happening in this city. If you are a lover of film, I implore you to visit this incredible, highly curated public resource. Queensland Museum Lunchtime Lectures are free, air conditioned and full of enthusiastic nerds. Need I say more? Mama De Luna in Wilston is my number-one spot for delicious, extremely underrated, family-style Mexican cuisine. KushiMaru is a yummy and cheerful yakitori izakaya on Elizabeth Street in the city with great prices. For a drink, Marlowe has just opened down the road from my art studio and gallery in South Brisbane. The view from its deck through to the city is a gem. Also along Fish Lane is Bar Brutus. As a lover of Brisbane’s unique blend of subtropical brutalism, I can’t think of a better place to enjoy a margarita on a hot night than overlooking the concrete oasis of the Fish Lane Town Square ”

DANIEL WILSON
Chef and co-owner LPO Tarragindi
“It’s not hard to spend time eating, drinking and living my bootleg version of ‘la dolce vita’ in Brisbane. For breakfast, I drop into Sippy Tom in Teneriffe to knock back some breakfast wine and the lamb flatbread, which slaps hard. Then I’ll park myself at a table at that Thai vinyl cafe So What Stereo and enjoy the best khao soi in the city.
If there is any chance of nabbing a custard tart or a slice of Russian honey cake I’ll make sure I get out to Bella & Tortie in Stafford.
One of my favourite places for dinner and too many bottles is Gum Bistro in West End. Sit at the bar, watch the city walk by and enjoy the theatre of the kitchen. If it’s on the menu, order the mushrooms and pipis.
An undiscovered little diamond is the New Farm Fish Cafe & JoHoJa Taiwanese Cuisine on Brunswick Street opposite New Farm Park. Order the duck blood soup or the Taiwanese fried chicken. It’s an absolute banger.”

Three creative voices open up their address books, revealing the secret spots and everyday rituals that define life on the Sunny Coast.
WORDS: SONYA GELLERT

Chef and director of The Ohana Group
“One of the most enjoyable things to do on the coast is to climb or hike in one of the many national parks or mountains. I like to hike Mount Coolum each week for its great view. At Mount Ninderry, you can take your dog and, during some seasons, forage for a few wild raspberries! But the jewel in the Sunshine Coast crown is the walk in the Noosa National Park. Grab a coffee from my good friends at SevGen’s Deadly Espresso (see Aunty Terri) and walk to Hell’s Gates. My wife and I frequent the Thai eatery Samila Gaeng on George Street in Maroochydore, run by powerhouse husband-and-wife duo Ying and Adam. When it comes to drinks, Seabourne Distillery does an amazing seasonal cocktails list. Theo’s Social Club offers an incredible selection of wines, cocktails and great snacks. Halse Lodge is a great place to catch up after the beach or before a cheeky night out – think affordable food and cold beers.”

KAY KERR
Author and journalist
“A perfect Saturday for me would involve a drive to Palmwoods for brunch at Homegrown Cafe. I would sit outside and enjoy the sunshine and birds. After that, I would duck into Little Book Nook, then have a stroll through the community garden. If I was being more productive, I would go to Yandina Country Markets to stock up on produce, vintage clothes, plants for the garden and treats. While in Yandina, stock up at the gorgeous Meadow Bake Shop. still dream of the cocktails I had on a girls’ night at Dee Den in Buderim, and Mapleton Pub is my favourite pub on the coast, where everything’s locally sourced. If I was heading on a drive through the hinterland, I would stop at Muffin Whole at Nambour for coffee and road-trip treats. The Alexandra Headland to Mooloolaba walk has gorgeous views, lots of lizards and birdlife, and you can end your walk with a swim in the ocean.

Ceramic artist, writer and curator
“My favourite restaurant is set in the middle of a rainforest. At The Tamarind, Maleny, you can sit around the fire pit and hear the waterfall rushing over the rocks as you drink your cocktail and anticipate a delicious dinner. The food is a contemporary Australian menu inspired by spicy, piquant Southeast Asian flavours. I think it captures everything beautiful about living in Maleny. Also in Maleny, Spill Wine is the perfect place for an afternoon drink. Jamie has created an oasis of calm at the top of Maple Street, where you can always get a spot-on recommendation of an unusual wine (and a delicious snack to accompany it). And on weekends, Montvale Distillery and Bar is open. Here, you can chill out with local gin and a woodfired pizza. The owners have built an amazing greenhouse from recycled timbers. It’s furnished with custom-made tables by local cabinetmaker Ben Adams.”

A small beach community with a big heart, Moffat Beach brings together everything a holidaymaker could want from a day at the beach. A surf beach welcomes keen surfers, Moffat Beach Brewing Co charms post-swim patrons, and an ice-cream shop by the name of Sugar Mama’s Shack fuels ocean-viewers for the afternoon. Zee Nosh offers memorable Japanese meals, while The Pocket Espresso Bar, One Block Back and Ours By the Beach siren call the uncaffeinated with the scent of coffee. Then there’s the lure of the independent boutiques that pepper the small town (make a beeline for Bliss Furniture and Homewares).

Beyond the best-known attractions lie pockets of character-filled charm: leafy hinterland hideaways, creative inner-city suburbs and beguiling seaside villages. Linger longer and traverse the streets (and laneways) less travelled.
WORDS: SONYA GELLERT
Head for the leafy hinterland to hike Mapleton Falls National Park (or one of the many hiking trails in this verdant patch of the Sunshine Coast) and stay for the elevated pub food at Mapleton Public House. Then visit The Falls Farm (where award-winning organic produce is plentiful), and pick up something freshly baked for the road at Sweet & Flour Bakery Cafe. Immerse yourself in a cultural experience at Triballink Activity Centre, pause for a scenic breath at Mapleton Falls lookout platform, and consider a drive to nearby Flame Hill Vineyard, in the nextdoor hinterland of Montville.
Despite its proximity to South Bank and Brisbane’s CBD, West End feels like a distinct, creatively inclined destination of its own. Beloved bookstores (Avid Reader, Where the Wild Things Are and Bent Books) and excellent coffee-andcake pit stops (Alphabet Cafe, Morning After and Picnic Cafe) sit alongside Greek food institutions, secondhand clothing stores, boutiques and stalwart delis. At night, must-visit restaurants and bars include Bar Francine, August, Cafe Disco, Gum Bistro, Pilloni, The End, Bosc and Flying Colours, among others. Plus, it’s just a hop away from the galleries, laneways and cultural hallmarks of South Brisbane.
A 20-minute drive from the city centre lands you at the picturesque seaside stretch of Manly Esplanade. Head for the idyllic Manly Boathouse, where fish, chips, salad and a glass of something sparkling are the order of the day. The boutiques and cafes of Cambridge Parade present a villagelike high street, with The Mad Hatters Bookshop, Cambridge Lane Espresso and Groundhog Social offering spots to while away a morning. On weekends, markets hug the harbour and, as the sun sets, The Arsonist, Olivera and the bars of Wynnum (like Adelita Wine Bar) keep locals fed and watered.

ALBION IS ALSO HOME TO A HERITAGE TRAIL, WHERE SUBURBAN SECRETS AWAIT.
Industrial Albion is a heritage-rich neighbourhood, where fans of baked goods, refined dining and top-notch drinks gather. Among this inner-north suburb’s culinary offerings is Hervé’s Restaurant & Bar, a French restaurant that sits in the Craft’d Grounds precinct, which also houses great coffee, flaky pastries and refreshing beers. Notable neighbours include wine store-meets-bar Wineism; Artie & Mai cafe; bakery Time & Temp; food store Jocelyn’s Provisions; dairy haven The Cheeseboard; and boutique Magnolia Interiors. Albion is also home to a heritage trail, where suburban secrets await, and The Bathhouse Albion, for a post-stroll soak.

WHAT’S ON

From sunrise sessions and culinary delights to wellness havens and hidden trails, three Gold Coast locals share their insider picks for living like a local in Australia’s surf city.
WORDS: AMY MILLS

“For our family, the dream spots are out in the Currumbin Valley. If you follow the Currumbin Creek, there are truly magical spots with nobody around that are accessible for a swim and a summer hang.
The 8km Gold Coast Oceanway bike and walking path connecting Currumbin Alley to Snapper Rocks is a game changer for access to the southern end and a great way to spend a Saturday. After a ride, the Rainbow Bay Surf Club has got to be one of the most beautiful spots to have a cold beer on a nice afternoon.
For a long lunch, the lamb ragu saffron pappardelle at LiTO at the Mondrian Gold Coast is seriously the most epic feast and the location is one of my absolute favourites. It feels like we wake up earlier than anywhere in the world here so if you’re coming to visit our city, set your alarm for early so you can enjoy the farmers’ markets, beaches and coastal communities – the best part of being in this amazing place!”

“My dream Saturday is a morning walk with the girls down Hedges Avenue at Mermaid Beach, an iced matcha from Bobby Bang’s at The Oxley in Nobby Beach and a browse in Thrifter, followed by a dip in the ocean. For brunch, my go-to spots are Paddock Bakery, Bam Bam Bakehouse or The Henchman for a chill vibe. For dinner, it’s hard to beat Rick Shores, Tommy’s Italian or Siblings Kirra for those beautiful ocean views.
A cheeky cocktail at Malibu Racquet Club is the perfect start for a night out. My favourite hidden gem is Little Itoshin tucked away in Miami. It’s a local institution and serves the most fresh, delicious Japanese food.
I’m also obsessed with The Bathhouse at Ground for a relaxing reset. It’s so nice to soak up the natural beauty and be surrounded by all of the ancient trees. The hinterland is stunning; Tallebudgera Valley and Springbrook feel like a totally different world with waterfalls, hiking trails and hidden cafes. It’s such a nice escape.”

“For great coffee, I love Sun Devil Drinks Company just over the border at Tweed Heads or Stable at Cornerstone Stores. There’s nothing more glorious than starting the day with a sunrise beach session at Currumbin Alley followed by an acai bowl from Salt Mill, which we enjoy on the grass overlooking the beach.
On Friday nights, we often head to the Sanctuary Markets on the Village Green at the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary with the kids for dinner, live music and atmosphere. We also love Home of the Arts for kids’ activities, exhibitions and a little cultural fix.
I enjoy a cheeky visit to White Bohemian at Palm Beach or a wander along James Street at Burleigh to check out Emte Boutique, The Freedom State and Sean Scott Boutique.
You’ll often find us kayaking and standup paddling at Tallebudgera and Currumbin Creek, taking on the TreeTop Challenge high ropes course or doing the Witches Falls circuit on Tamborine Mountain.”

Beyond its golden beaches, the Gold Coast buzzes with neighbourhoods brimming with creativity and coastal cool. From surfside dining strips to hinterland hideaways, these are the suburbs defining the city right now.
WORDS: AMY MILLS
This laidback southern locale is having a moment. Sandwiched between the Gold Coast Airport and Currumbin Beach, Tugun was once overlooked –but no more. This seaside suburb hums with fresh dining options, upscale grocers like Tugun Market Co and The Fox’s Pantry, and creative hubs such as Pot Studios for ceramics workshops. Palomino’s Deli and Cornerstone Stores, home to Quince Cellar and boutique Kind Curations, are worth a visit. The pièce de résistance, however, is that long, pristine stretch of beach with fewer crowds.

Equal parts surfy and sophisticated, Palmy’s golden stretch is where oldschool coastal charm meets a new wave of food and design energy.
Locals linger over lattes and pastries at Paris-Brest French Bakery or Mylk Well, stroll to the Surf Club for sunset beers, and book tables at Balboa Italian or Las Palmas for dinner with a view.
Nostalgic, easygoing and quiet, Palmy is a suburb that’s hit its stride.

With its hinterland backdrop and village charm, Mudgeeraba has undergone a quiet metamorphosis. Just 15 minutes from Burleigh, this hamlet has become a food-lover’s haven with new cafe and providore, The Hearth, serving house-made soul food, pastries and stellar coffee and matcha. Junior’s Deli is sandwich heaven, while Hotel Panchos offers Mexican fare with outdoor dining and a family-friendly vibe. By night, Anekawa is among the city’s best Japanese restaurants, and Lenny Pizzeria delivers the good times in spades. Round out the day with a holistic treatment at the luxe Earth & Skin Day Spa.

Home to live-music venue Miami
Burleigh is a lively beachside mecca loved by barefoot surfers, the well-heeled, foodies and families. Known for its world-class surf break and national park where rainforest meets sea, it boasts world-class dining to match (Rick Shores, The Tropic and Labart) plus Australia’s first Mondrian Hotel. Stop by Rosella’s or Paloma for cocktails and people-watching or browse James Street’s boutiques. Takeaway is upscale at Freddy’s, and hit Flor Wine + Grocer for natural wine and olives for a picnic.
Marketta, the Surface Street Art Festival, restaurants, breweries, distilleries and an unspoilt beach, Miami blends city energy with coastal ease. The team behind Byron Bay’s Pixie have opened Italian favourite Bar Monte in an unassuming street, while Precinct Brewing Co, Granddad Jack’s and Japanese beer bar Roji Cat are local go-tos for a tipple – or two. After a day of surfing or exploring, reimagined boutique hotel The Shores Miami is the perfect glam reset.
