Weekend INSIDER TIPS
WORDS: AMY MILLS
Rise and shine
Start your day like a local with a sunrise beach walk and an ocean swim. Take off your shoes and hit the sand before cooling off in the surf and enjoying a coffee alfresco on a golden patch of sand. If walking isn’t your thing, hire a bike and hit the epic Oceanway bike path that runs from Tugun to Kirra, stopping to swim at the patrolled beaches along the way. Bliss.
Chasing waterfalls
The lush Currumbin Valley is home to the Currumbin Rock Pools. Ideal for a freshwater cool off on those humid days, the rock pools can get busy, so drive a little further along Currumbin Creek Road to its end and you’ll come to the car park for the Mount Cougal Springbrook National Park.
A sealed walking track leads to Cougal Cascades, a series of beautiful mountain rock pools, small waterfalls and a natural rockslide surrounded by lush, sub-tropical rainforest. There are plenty of shady spots for a dip and a picnic or you can take the 1km walk along the bitumen path and past the cascades to the restored remains of a 1940s heritage sawmill. On the way home, swing by Pasture and Co, tucked away in the Currumbin Valley Eco Village, for fresh, seasonal and organic fare.
Family fun
The Gold Coast might have become a foodie and cultural hub in recent years but its theme parks are still a major drawcard for families. Sentimental favourites Sea World and Wet’n’Wild never disappoint and both iconic attractions cater for the thrill seekers — Kamikaze, anyone? — as well as the little people in the family, plus loads of water-based attractions (so bring a towel). There is also loads of splashtastic fun to be had at GC Aqua Park in Southport with its awesome but strenuous inflatable water course. Just don’t forget to bring masses of stamina and an appetite for adventure!
Echo Beach
We are going to let you in on a little local secret: Echo Beach. Located within the Burleigh Heads National Park at the southern side of the headland, this scenic sheltered spot is an ideal place for swimming, Stand Up Paddle boarding – or SUPing, as the locals call it – and people watching. For those who prefer a patrolled beach, there’s a flagged swimming area across the creek on the side of the bridge – as well as Custard Canteen for takeaway espresso coffee and their famous Portuguese Tarts. This seriously picturesque cove is flat, protected and ideal for basking in the glorious Queensland sunshine.

Hit the waves
With its perfect point waves and legends such as Mick Fanning and Joel Parkinson calling the surf city home, it’s not hard to believe the Gold Coast is the eighth World Surfing Reserve. It’s not a trip to the GC without paddling out for a wave at one of the Coast’s iconic beaches. Better yet, you don’t have to be Mick and Joel to get out there and enjoy the waves; there are some fantastic surf schools and instructors ready to show you the ropes. Or keep it easy and stick to the patrolled beaches and ride the waves on a boogie board.
BURLEIGH HEADS
With its pumping point wave, national park and boutique shopping, put Burleigh at the top of your list. There's a patrolled beach, plus kids’ playgrounds and plenty of shade for a picnic of fish and chips.
Jet ski safari
Experience the beauty of the Gold Coast’s sub-tropical waterways and the joy of watching playful dolphins and turtles in their natural habitat on a jet ski safari. Take in the killer views, beautiful beaches, sandbars and islands with Jet Ski Safaris Gold Coast for a wet and wild adventure you’ll remember forever. There are short and sweet 30-minute tours right through
to 2.5-hour tours for the thrill-seekers and better yet, you don’t need to have a licence or be an adrenalin junkie to enjoy this bucket-list experience.
Want to book a water experience during your stay on the Gold Coast? Talk to your tour desk or hotel concierge.
TOP 5 GOLD COAST BEACHES
You can’t come to the GC and not visit a beach. Here’s five to try.
CURRUMBIN BEACH
This idyllic enclave is what many locals consider to be the ‘real Gold Coast.’ After a swim at the patrolled beach, chill on the grass, or head out to the world-class surf spot, Currumbin Alley.
RAINBOW BAY
Laidback and naturally beautiful, Rainbow Bay is loved by families and surfers alike. This sheltered spot is sandwiched between famous surf spot Snapper Rocks and Greenmount Beach.
SURFERS PARADISE
For a lively atmosphere and people watching galore, Surfers Paradise is your beach. Packed with tourists and locals alike, the Gold Coast’s most famous beach stretches for two glorious kilometres.
This tranquil spot is popular for swimming, kayaking and SUPing. The crystal-clear waters and treelined shores are a major drawcard for locals, visitors and Instagrammers.

WE LOVE INSIDER TIPS
EO: What is one thing people might find surprising about life on the GC?
ML: A diversity of offerings. We used to be known as a bit of a cheap and tacky holiday destination but that stereotype no longer exists. We have a thriving foodie scene with pockets of underground offerings littered across the city, world-class arts and music venues, a rich Indigenous history to be celebrated and, of course, an unrivalled and diverse natural offering of national parks, hikes, waterfalls, wildlife and incredible beaches.
EO: Take us through an itinerary you’d pull together for a dream day on the GC for a visitor?
ML: This time of year, we’d go to any of the Tweed Coast headlands before sunrise in the hope of catching the last of the whale migration south. We’d try and find a wave at the abundance of unspoilt beaches down there followed by a coffee and artisan breakfast.
We’d take the hinterland route back north via Murwillumbah and then head to the Currumbin Rock Pools for a freshwater rinse off. We’d pull into Dust Temple at Currumbin for some lunch and to check out the artworks on display.
In the afternoon, we’d go for a drink on the balcony at Burleigh Pavilion then onto Miami Marketta, where you can take your pick of different
cultural street-style dinner offerings and watch live music.
EO: Hot tip for a great coffee?
ML: Aperitivo Cafe & Panini Bar at Currumbin, MC’s Sandwich House at Burleigh or Stone Studio at Miami.
EO: Where to go for a weekend beer?
ML: For early afternoon, it has to be Burleigh Pavilion then onto Rosellas or Après Surf [also both at Burleigh]. You
can’t go wrong at any of the beachfront surf clubs or just grabbing a patch of grass/sand along our beaches — but take your rubbish with you!
EO: Any under-the-radar gems that tourists might not know about?
ML: Definitely! I’d say 19 Karen Art Gallery in Mermaid Beach and Costa Taco at Palm Beach.
EO: The GC has a burgeoning food scene. What are your top tips for a foodie fix?
ML: Itoshin for Japanese, Franc Jr’s for pizza, Eddie’s Grub House for burgers, Miami Hot Bread for authentic Vietnamese, Tommy’s Italian for pasta, Rick Shores for Modern Asian and Muso Ramen for ramen.
EO: Any creative people or label brands we should know about?
ML: There are tonnes! Creatives like Trent Mitchell, Troy Archer, Kiel Tillman, Jake Springthorpe and brands and businesses like Peony Swimwear, Rhythm, With Jean, Alfred’s Apartment, Hotel Miami and Relative Creative.

EO: Tell us why you live and work on the Gold Coast?
MB: I grew up at Currumbin, and absolutely love the Coast’s laidback vibe, particularly the southern end from Miami to Rainbow Bay. The Coast was always known as the glitter strip and all about theme parks, which is a large reason behind why I (along with co-founder Sarah) started The Village Markets in 2008. We were passionate about our region and knew there was a creative undercurrent waiting to be discovered.
As the years have passed, the culture has flourished and the Gold Coast is now a thriving creative hub. It has as much to offer as any city but still maintains the laidback coastal lifestyle we all love.
EO: Take us through an itinerary you’d pull together for a dream day on the GC for a first-time visitor?
MB: We would wake for an early longboard wave at Currumbin Alley or Rainbow Bay followed by the best Acai bowls and a coffee at The Salt Mill in Currumbin.
We may even pop into Currumbin General Store, Salty Collective or Will and Bear along the beachfront to shop for some unique pieces by local brands while we wait for our bowls.
For lunch, we would go to Jimmy Wahs for Modern Vietnamese, or if keeping it casual, we would get takeaway from Scott’s Luncheonette at Palm Beach or Pretty Handsome at Miami, and a bottle of wine from
Somm Wine Store and have a picnic on Burleigh Headland at sunset. We could then either finish with a gelato from Burleigh Gelato, or a margarita at Rosella’s — or both!
EO: Hot tip for a great coffee?
MB: Stable at Cornerstone Stores.
EO: Any under-the-radar gems?
MB: Clay Cantina at Coolangatta is an authentic Mexican kitchen that also offers cooking classes.
EO: Where to go for retail therapy?
MB: The Village Markets has a great mix of emerging designer labels in fashion, vintage, art and ceramics by friendly local makers. Plus there’s amazing live music — keep an eye out for super talented regular, Lily Budiasa. Our pre-loved designer Rack Sales are also a huge drawcard, with stylesavvy ladies and gents lining up to sell their wares from brands like Bassike, Zimmermann and Chloe.
I also love Kind Curations at Cornerstone Stores for conscious labels and gifts and Studio Jo Store, which is run by one of our TVM stallholders. She stocks gorgeous local brands, including her own, Tegan Rae.
EO: Any tips for kid-friendly fun?
MB: The beach, always! My kids love the water and surfing (as do I!) so it’s a win-win. We also love to go for a weekend drive and stop off for some lunch, which could be anywhere from Mount Tamborine Brewery down to a Northern NSW eatery like Tumbulgum Tavern or Husk Distillery. We also love picnics at Burleigh Headland.

Top 5 Drives
The Gold Coast is a great base for some truly diverse drives. Here are our picks for some epic road trips to remember.
WORDS: AMY MILLS
1. Byron Bay
Potentially the most-loved beach town in all of Australia, this former hippie haven-turned-hot spot is just an hour’s drive from the Gold Coast. A scenic drive past Murwillumbah and Brunswick Heads south down the M1, be sure to drop in at The Farm Byron Bay for a coffee and a look around the lush 30-hectare working farm and agritourism icon. Drive into town and have a dip at Main Beach, surf the point waves at The Pass and take a hike on the Cape Byron Walking Track to the Cape Byron
Lighthouse, the most easterly point in Australia, where you can spot dolphins, turtles and humpback whales during migration season. Byron’s beaches, culinary scene and boutiques may lure tourists to the coastal town in droves but the verdant hinterland is also a must-do. There are hidden waterfalls such as Killen and Minyon Falls as well as hip villages like Newrybar – home to Harvest Café – and eateries such as Doma at Federal.
Drive time: Approx. 75 minutes.

INSIDER
TIPS
Cape Byron Lighthouse
2. Mount Tamborine
This charming mountain village feels like a world away from the GC beaches. Part of the Scenic Rim, this charming plateau is flanked by ancient rainforest and peppered with art galleries, wineries, hiking trails, foodie experiences and distilleries so you can easily spend an entire day exploring. Walk among the lush treetops and soak in the panoramic views on The Tamborine Rainforest Skywalk, explore the Glow Worm Caves at Cedar Creek Winery or tackle the Witches Falls circuit, which winds through verdant rainforest. Refuel with pizza and good vibes at Fortitude Brewing or enjoy a welldeserved cheeseboard at the beautiful Witches Falls Winery before making your way back down the mountain.
Drive time: Approx. 45 minutes.
3. Tweed Valley
The stretch of hinterland between the Gold Coast and Byron Bay often gets overlooked, however it's well worth a detour off the highway. Follow the M1 and turn onto the Tweed Valley Way towards Murwillumbah. Follow the river and take in beautiful scenery of the cane fields and small towns such as Tumbulgum — home to a great little country pub — before checking out Tweed Regional Gallery, regarded as one of the finest in New South Wales. The country town of Murwillumbah has a burgeoning art scene and is also home to the reimagined Imperial Hotel, the M-Arts Precinct and culinary hot spots such as Bistro Livi. Drive a little further afield and the tiny town of Uki, and its slew of bohemian stores and carefree ethos, will steal your heart. Drive time: Approx. 65 minutes.
4. Natural Bridge Waterfall
With its sub-tropical rainforest and cascading waterfalls, the hinterland is home to a host of natural attractions including the Springbrook National Park, which is a Gondwana Rainforests of Australia World Heritage Area. Tucked away in the national park is Natural Bridge, a sunlit waterfall pouring across and down through a hole in an arched cave-like formation. It can be accessed via the Natural Bridge Circuit, an easy 30-minute walking trail which weaves through towering hoop pines, strangler figs, lush palm trees and running streams and into the cave. The cave is home to thousands of glow worms, micro bats, luminous fungi and fireflies, so the view is just as spectacular at night.
Drive time: Approx. 50 minutes.
5. Tweed Coast
There are plenty of scenic coastal towns to explore just over the Queensland border. Hit the road and stop in at Kingscliff for a swim in the crystal-clear, white-sand bottomed Kingscliff Creek on high tide before checking out relaxed seaside neighbours such as Fingal Head, Hastings Point and Pottsville, which boasts an evolving food scene. Stop by Halcyon House in Cabarita too. Drive time: 50 minutes [to Pottsville].
Talk to your tour desk or hotel concierge to arrange vehicle hire or to book experiences at each destination.
