Kane
Dignum
aka Little Fritter, international DJ
EO: Why do you live on the Gold Coast instead of in a larger city like Sydney or London?
KD: The Gold Coast is paradise to me. I travel loads for work – both domestically and internationally – so I get to see some amazing places but as soon as I step off the plane, breathe in that salty, clean air, I always think, “Nothing beats this place!”
EO: What’s the best thing about raising your kids in the surf city?
KD: Having all the outdoor activities right at our fingertips. There is so much nature all around us – pristine beaches, rainforest... It really does promote a healthy lifestyle.
EO: What’s the first thing you do when you come home after working internationally?
KD: Go out for the day with my wife and kids. After being away, I always feel the need to connect with the ocean and then just relax and have a nice lunch somewhere.
EO: What would be a dream family day for the Dignums?
KD: Tallebudgera rainforest is a hidden gem for sure. There’s so many different spots to explore out there and it is more untouched than other well-known areas. We often head out to Tallebudgera Valley in the morning and then we go to Currumbin Valley Harvest for some food. From there, the drive across the hinterland into the Northern Rivers of New South Wales is amazing. We love Fingal [Head Beach], which is just across the border, so we’ll have some beach time either there
“ We love finding quiet spots with nobody around, usually in Tallebudgera or the Tweed.”
or at Kirra [Beach] depending on the conditions. Then we’ll finish the day at a lovely dinner spot at the southern end of the Coast called Bar Evelyn.
EO: Hot tip for a great coffee?
KD: The Salt Mill on Currumbin beachfront.
EO: What must-do foodie experiences would you recommend to visitors?
KD: The Lamb Shop at Broadbeach, Miami Fish Market and The Tropic at Burleigh Heads.
EO: Where do you go for cheap eats with the family?
KD: Hakataya Ramen at Surfers Paradise.
EO: What nature-based activities do the kids love?
KD: Kayaking around the creeks is our fave at the moment. We love finding
Kane with his family at Tallebudgera rainforest
quiet spots with nobody around, usually in Tallebudgera or the Tweed. We set up a little picnic lunch and do some fishing.
EO: Favourite spot for a sundowner?
KD: Pack an Esky and hit the beaches for sunset. You can do this anywhere on the Gold Coast really but it’s hard to beat Burleigh or down the southern end to watch the sun set over the mountains.
EO: What don’t visitors know about the Gold Coast?
KD: It can be just as beautiful on the gloomy, wet days.
Nikki Westcott
Burleigh Heads local and co-founder of fashion label Jagger & Stone
EO: What do you love most about living on the Gold Coast?
NW: I grew up in a really small town without the ocean so, for me, living on the Gold Coast makes me feel like I’ve hit the jackpot. We are spoilt for choice as we have the ocean, the hinterland and Brisbane city only an hour away. Also, nothing beats a morning swim at the beach before a work day.
EO: What does a dream day exploring the city’s hidden gems look like?
NW: Packing a picnic and heading to the waterfalls at Currumbin Valley. It’s only a 15-minute drive from where I live in Burleigh Heads and you feel like you’re worlds away. It’s the perfect change of scenery.
EO: Hot tip for a great coffee?
NW: Seadog at Burleigh.
EO: What are some must-do foodie experiences?
NW: Maman Bar & Kitchen for mum’s home-style cooking and a dinner on the healthy side. My other favourite arvo spot is Rick Shores for a bug roll and a chilli marg.
EO: Any local creatives or labels we should know about?
NW: I work in the fashion industry so we’re surrounded by so many creatives all the time. Some of my favourite photographers are based here on the Gold Coast, such as Carlene Raschke and Freyee Photography.
EO: Best wellness experiences?
NW: Native State Bathhouse at Kirra is great for an indoor experience and Greenhouse the Bathhouse at Tallebudgera Valley is the best for more of an outdoor vibe.
EO: What are your favourite naturebased activities?
NW: You can’t go past a walk through Burleigh Heads National Park and then setting up at Tallebudgera Creek for the day.
EO: Can you share your top three boutiques for retail therapy?
NW: The Freedom State on James Street at Burleigh [Heads], Incu at Pacific Fair and Strange Days Store for vintage at Palm Beach.
EO: Favourite spot for a sundowner?
NW: Rick Shores.

With no humidity, clear skies, fewer crowds and wondrous sunsets, winter on the Gold Coast is a truly magical time of year. Here are the best outdoor, nature-based experiences the seaside city has to offer.
WORDS: AMY MILLS
1
Whale watching
Every winter, tens of thousands of playful humpback whales steal the show in the seaside city as they migrate from the Antarctic to the warmer waters off the coast of Queensland.
Known as the Humpback Highway, close to 40,000 of these magnificent mammals pass through the Coast on their way north to mate and birth their young before making the return trip.
To witness this natural wonder, jump onboard Sea World Whale Watch, departing from Sea World Cruise Terminal between May and November.
From private luxury superyacht charters to eco-certified tours, there are many ways to get up close and personal with the humpbacks while learning about conservation from the onboard marine experts.
2
Treetop walking
Take in the natural beauty of the Coast from high in the air on one of the city’s iconic treetop walks. Start with the Tamborine Rainforest Skywalk, set in 30 acres of pristine privately owned rainforest beside Cedar Creek.
At Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary’s TreeTop Challenge, spot kangaroos, koalas and emus, and zipline over animal enclosures from heights of up to 20 metres.
At Australia’s largest high-ropes adventure park, the TreeTop Challenge at Tamborine Mountain, visitors can walk and zipline through 9 acres of ancient rainforest and bushland.
For a free experience, head into the Green Mountains section of the World Heritage-listed Lamington National Park at Canungra to experience O’Reilly’s Tree Top Walk. Suitable for the whole family, this suspension bridge lets you observe rainforest life from 15 metres above the ground.
3
Spot the turtles
For a charming day out, head away from the beaches and out to familyowned ranch Historic Rivermill.
Just 10 minutes inland from the theme parks at Nerang, this café, museum and petting zoo oozes rustic country charm and is a great spot to let the kids run free and learn about local wildlife in a safe and peaceful environment.
Guests are invited to interact with resident animals, including alpacas, deer and pigs, and observe bales of turtles in their natural habitat along the Coomera River, with the sweeping hinterland vistas as the backdrop.
4
Get your glow on
Known as the jewel of the Springbrook National Park, Natural Bridge is a sunlit waterfall pouring across and down through a hole in an arched, cave-like formation. This scenic spot – accessed via the Natural Bridge Circuit walking trail – is also spectacular to visit at night as it is home to thousands of glow worms, as well as micro bats, luminous fungi and fireflies.
Another must-do is the purposebuilt glow worm sanctuary at Mount Tamborine’s Cedar Creek Estate Vineyard and Winery, created as part of a world-first conservation initiative to protect the colony of native Mount Tamborine glow worms. Marvel at the luminescent effect of thousands of glow worms on the cave walls, and learn about the insects’ life cycle and behaviour on an eco-certified tour.
The site is also home to Frog Hollow, a self-guided exhibition of native frogs and insects on the rainforest boardwalk.
5
Secret rock pools
There’s nothing like being out in nature for a major mood boost. Fortunately, the Gold Coast, home to four national parks in the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia World Heritage Area, is a veritable nature lover’s paradise. Join the locals and explore the city’s rock pools and swimming holes, such as Cougal Cascades at the very back of Currumbin Valley. Surrounded by towering ancient rainforest, this series
of cascading mountain rock pools, waterfalls and one gnarly natural rockslide are worth the drive – even if you’re not game for a winter dip.
Located along the Twin Falls Circuit hike in the Springbrook National Park, Twin Falls swimming hole and its plunging waterfall also deliver a memorable, pinch-me moment.
A less secret, but no less enchanting, scenic spot to relax in nature is Cedar Creek Falls, tucked away at Tamborine Mountain. Soak in the mountain air, admire the view and plunge into the fresh, crystal-clear water for that exhilarating natural high.

BREWING BOOM
The Gold Coast’s thriving craft scene is making serious waves – and beer aficionados and artisan spirit enthusiasts are spoilt for choice.
WORDS: AMY MILLS
With epic surf, subtropical weather and year-round good vibes, the Gold Coast now has another major drawcard, with its booming craft brewing and distilling scenes putting the seaside city on the world map.
There’s no better way to end a perfect winter’s day soaking up everything the Goldie has to offer than with a beverage brewed or distilled by passionate locals determined to share their top-notch tipples with visitors and regulars alike.
The southern Gold Coast is a definite hot spot for brewers, with Lost Palms Brewing, Black Hops Brewing, Precinct Brewing Co, Currumbin Valley Brewing, Burleigh Brewing Co and Balter Brewing Company all calling the stretch between Miami and Currumbin home. Award-winning distilleries such as Miami’s Granddad Jacks Craft Distillery and Tamborine Mountain’s Cauldron Distillery, as well as Wild Flower Gin Distillery, Two Tales Distilling Co and Capricorn Distilling, also have discerning drinkers raising a glass. The slew of new brewery tour operators popping up; the success of the annual Crafted Beer Festival; and the recent launch of Burleigh Craft, an interactive map and guide to exploring Burleigh Heads’ breweries and distilleries, are all evidence the Gold Coast has become a serious player in the craft scene.
Balter Brewing Company
Lost Palms Brewing
Miami nice
“We definitely have our fair share of amazing breweries and distilleries at this end of the coast,” says Lost Palms Brewing founder Jarrod Blanning.
“It’s such a positive injection of tourism and culture to our community.”
Jarrod opened the doors of his pinkhued craft beer taproom on Miami’s Oak Avenue back in 2017. Across the street from live music mecca Miami Marketta and surrounded by street art, Lost Palms has since become a muchloved neighbourhood hangout.
On any given weekend, the beer garden is filled with crowds soaking up the convivial vibes, and sipping beers such as the approachable lager GCB or the crisp, tropical Talle Daze, a nod to the nearby Tallebudgera Creek.
“We wanted to offer up a space which was the opposite of most breweries,” says Jarrod.
“We’re a small team committed to creating great beers and exploring the art of independent craft beer both within the can and beyond. Everything is brewed in house, all labels are designed in house and [on our canning days] any staff member available is downstairs catching cans.
“We put a lot of love into our products and our venue, and we want our brewery space to be welcoming and inclusive as well as our beers.”
A community’s beating heart
After 18 years, local icon Burleigh Brewing Co is a stalwart of the Burleigh Heads community and pioneer of the Coast’s craft scene.
Burleigh Brewing CEO and director Peta Fielding says consumers’ desire to make more conscious and socially responsible choices has contributed to the craft boom.
“There’s a population of people genuinely looking to make more considered choices in all areas of their lives,” says Peta.
“Also, beer was really boring for a long time. Beers were of similar style – and a lot of people do love that style – but for those who want something different, it is exciting that there are now other options to go after.”
“Beer doesn’t travel well so the closer to the source you can drink it, the better.”
Peta, who owned a brewery on Oahu, Hawaii, with her Hawaiian brew master husband Brennan before moving home to the Coast, is thrilled beer tourism has taken off back here.
“There are people who look up breweries and check them all out when they arrive in a new place,” she says.
“Beer doesn’t travel particularly well so the closer to the source you can drink it, the better, which goes hand in hand with tourism.”
Mountain magic
Those keen to trade beach for bush often take the 45-minute scenic drive to the charming village of Tamborine Mountain, with its art galleries, wineries, hiking trails and distilleries.
Founded by mates and former podiatrists Greg Dower and Darren Stewart with Darren’s brother Glen, Cauldron Distillery is one such distillery luring visitors up the mountain.
The guys bought the 18-acre property in the Hartley Road Winery Precinct in 2020 and started their distillery and bar as a passion project –and haven’t looked back.
Home of the award-winning FiveTo-Five Gin, Cauldron has attracted a strong fan base who come to enjoy the signature gins and cocktails crafted from local ingredients, tuck into quality fare and play lawn games among the lush meadows and vineyards.
“We absolutely have a real opportunity here in Queensland to become the capital of brewing and distilling,” says Darren. “It’s exciting.
