Another favourite would be the newly opened Beach House, further up on Throwers Drive. Nothing beats catching up with friends and looking at the beautiful water.

end where we are, it’s like a small coastal town where everybody knows everybody. Most of our friends grew up here and went to school together.

The Gold Coast offers so many great elements – the beautiful farmers’ market of a weekend, fishing and swimming in Tallebudgera Creek or Currumbin Creek and the Currumbin Rock Pools. They have a beautiful little food market at the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary on a Friday night, where we often take the kids for dinner. It’s an amazing place to grow up and now to raise our own kids here.

EO: What’s one thing people might find surprising about life on the Gold Coast?

TC: I think people immediately think of the cheesy elements of Surfers Paradise back in the ’80s and ’90s.

However, when you live on the Gold Coast, especially at the southern

TC: When there are quite a few kids, we often go to the Currumbin RSL. It’s right on Currumbin Creek and caters so well for the kids with a playground and outdoor dining. My kids are getting older so now they

EO: If you have visitors with kids, what are the must-dos?

TC: A trip to the beach and the rock pools. We’d stop at the little café on our way back in from the valley to grab fresh fruit, a coffee and a bite to eat.

EO: Tell us why you live and work on the Gold Coast?

TC: For us, it’s definitely the ability to be able to be so close to the beach.

Although the Gold Coast is a smallish coastal city, our area of Palm Beach and Currumbin feels like a country town. It’s just amazing.

Not only are the beaches an attraction, but we also have the beautiful hinterland of Currumbin Valley and beyond, as well as Northern NSW and Byron Bay, right at our fingertips. We travel so extensively but this is where we have called home for 30 years and we will be here forever.

and get some fresh water in the gills!

If the beaches are packed, we head down to northern NSW, usually to the beach at Fingal Head, also known as Dreamtime. It’s a good place to get out of the northerly winds in summer and you can always find a sneaky little spot with not many people.

at Palm Beach Currumbin High School to grab breakfast and coffee while getting our fresh produce. For a bit of family fun and laughs, Topgolf never disappoints, but a beach day with some fish and chips is always fun!

Another all-time favourite is Issue 1 at Robina Town Shopping Centre. This boutique has a lot of my favourite international and Aussie brands, and the team know their stuff. They carry a huge selection of our eyewear.

EO: Hot tip for a great coffee?

TC: Most days I stop at Portside or Dust Temple on Currumbin Creek Road for a coffee. If I’m in Palm Beach, I usually go to Barefoot Barista. If you’re down by Third Avenue, Third Base is good for a coffee with friends and they do a beautiful breakfast.

EO: Your go-to for a margarita?

TC: I love a good margi so if I’m having lunch at Palm Beach, I’ll pop into Costa Taco. Those guys do great food and make an amazing classic or spicy margarita. However, my favourite of all time would probably be the coconut margarita at Las Palmas on Seventh Avenue. They make an absolute banger. It’s to die for!

EO: Best boutiques for retail therapy?

TC: I’m a big fan of The Freedom State on James Street at Burleigh to get a fix of my favourite Australian brands.

They always have beautiful beachto-bar clothing. It’s also my go-to for jewellery when I need to buy pressies.

EO: Any under-the-radar gems?

TC: The hinterland is so beautiful, especially Currumbin Valley with its amazing rock pools and rockslides. It is a great place to escape the crowds

EO: What are your top tips for a foodie fix?

TC: We are big lovers of Japanese food and Itoshin at Mermaid Beach is our all-time favourite. One of their sons has his own little restaurant at the back of Miami called Little Itoshin and it is also just beautiful. Both locations never disappoint. We also love Italian and Mexican food and you can’t go past Balboa Italian or Costa Taco at Palm Beach.

EO: Where do you go for wellness and workouts?

TC: Michael [my husband] and I love to do the walk/run around Burleigh headland up through the rainforest over the top and back around to Palm Beach. You get a beautiful view from the top lookout, and it’s a good place to catch your breath. We like to finish it off with a swim in Talle Creek, which we do most Friday mornings and a few times during the week.

EO: Where should we go to buy art or see an exhibition?

TC: HOTA has awesome exhibitions.

And so does Dust Temple at Currumbin. Owners John and Isla are big supporters of the local art community and really embrace the art culture on the Coast. They always have local or interstate artists exhibiting their work in their gallery.

Best of All Lookout, Springbrook

Catch the sun casting its first rays from one of the many lookouts in Springbrook National Park. Take the 600m return walk through the beech forest to the Best of All Lookout in the Springbrook Plateau section for awe-inspiring views of the surrounding ranges, coastline and NSW's Mount Warning, the first place in Australia to be touched by the sun each day.

After your hike, head down the mountain to charming Mudgeeraba Village, which has garnered attention recently thanks to the recent opening of Lenny Pizzeria & Bar from culinary guru Rob Morwood, founder of Burleigh’s Justin Lane. Swing by Junior’s Deli for breakfast before grabbing an espresso from the coffee nook and browsing the impressive selection at boutique bookstore Bookness. Then just relax after your early morning at Mudgeeraba’s award-winning organic day spa, Earth and Skin, with an enticing menu of luxurious treatments.

The real Gold Coast

Over the rainbow

It's easy to miss the idyllic enclave of Currumbin Beach while driving along the Gold Coast Highway. However, turn off at the iconic Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary and follow the road to the beach and you’ll find one of the city’s most magic seaside villages.

Join the Dingoes, a group of affable locals who meet at Currumbin Vikings Surf Life Saving Club every day, at sunrise for a bodysurf and a banter.

Post-dip, stroll barefoot over to popular hole in the wall The Salt Mill for a coffee, a smoothie and one of their famous acai bowls. Burn off breakfast with a bike ride to Kirra on the flat beachside path as it snakes its way to Coolangatta.

You’d be hard pressed to find a spot as beautiful as Rainbow Bay at sunrise.

The iconic surf break of Snapper Rocks is an idyllic place to pause and admire the vibrant colours in the sky over the rocky point. Follow the path around to the adjoining Rainbow Bay for an ocean swim. For a post-sunrise caffeine fix, Little Mali café is a local favourite for coffee and a grab-and-go breakfast wrap, bowl or croissant.

Stroll the beachfront path to the northern end of Rainbow Bay for beautiful views from the lookout.

There are perfect vantage points to roll out a mat and flow through a yoga practice or meditation, or just watch the surfers at Snapper.

Tallebudgera Valley

4 Park up Ditch the beach for the bush and head to Schuster Park in Tallebudgera Valley to start the day surrounded by nature. A locals’ secret, this sprawling space was once part of a dairy farm owned by Joe Schuster and his family and spans 68 hectares.

There’s a jungle-themed playground with climbing nets and two mega slides, and a series of nature paths to encourage the kids to explore.

The playground is set on the banks of the serene Tallebudgera Creek and boasts a sandy beach so it’s ideal for an early-morning swim or kayak. Make use of the onsite barbecues and enjoy an alfresco brekkie in the morning sun while the kids play and swim.

Snapper Rocks

Early start at Echo Beach Start the day like a true southern Gold Coast local with a dip at Echo Beach. Undeniably one of the city’s most beautiful beaches, this pristine piece of paradise is located within the Burleigh Heads National Park.

Swim or hire a SUP and cruise the calm waters of Tallebudgera Creek, fringed by subtropical rainforest. Get your morning coffee fix at Custard Canteen across the creek. Known for its Portuguese tarts, it also dishes up an all-day brunch, which can be enjoyed at the picnic tables or devoured on the sandy creek shores.

After a sunrise SUP and coffee, take a hike in Burleigh Heads National Park. One of two trails, the 1.2km Oceanview Walk leads around the headland just above sea level, boasting epic views of the surf point.

With views of Coolangatta to the south and Surfers Paradise to the north, this rugged rock formation, accessed via a narrow staircase, is one of the most spectacular spots to bask in the early-morning glow.

Located between Miami and North Burleigh surf life saving clubs, this tuckedaway headland hot spot, surrounded by bushland, boasts panoramic coastal views for that picture-perfect Instagram snap.

THE SPIT

The gateway between the Broadwater and the open ocean, The Spit, the northernmost section of the Coast’s iconic stretch of sandy beach, has a sandpumping jetty where you can sit and take in a dreamy sunrise.

Once a tourist town known for theme parks and beaches, the Goldie has grown up and now offers pumping food and art scenes, craft breweries, boutique markets and charming hinterland hamlets.

Embrace the arts

The Village Markets in Burleigh, provides a launchpad for designers to showcase and sell their wares, with now-international brands such as Kivari, Peony and Mr Consistent and Cleopatra’s Bling having launched their labels at the 15-year-old market.

Vintage lovers should check out Desert Digs Vintage Market at Mo’s Desert Clubhouse, while the good times are served up at the Dreamworld Night Market every Friday and Saturday night with food trucks, live tunes and family entertainment.

In 2021, HOTA, Home of the Arts, opened the new $60.5m six-level Gallery, the largest public gallery outside a capital city in Australia.

It is easy to spend an entire day browsing the exhibitions, visiting the dedicated Children’s Gallery, lunching at Palette Restaurant or enjoying a cheeky cocktail – or two – with a view at the rooftop Exhibitionist Bar. Mermaid Beach’s 19 Karen gallery represents more than 90 local and international artists of various contemporary styles and genres.

Get crafty The craft beer scene has exploded, with new venues all over the surf city.

Hire a bike and do a self-guided tour of a few, like boutique brewery Lost Palms Brewing Co, brewpub Precinct Brewing Co and Black Hops Brewing.

Swing by Miami’s Granddad Jack’s Craft Distillery, before dinner at one of the Coast’s most-loved backstreet treasures, Japanese eatery Little Itoshin. One of Queensland’s pioneer craft breweries, Burleigh Brewing Co, is also a must-do, and you should travel south to Balter Brewing at Currumbin.

Mountain escape

Swap the beach for the bush and head to the quaint township of Canungra in the Scenic Rim region. Take a stroll along the main street, which is lined with cute cafes and shops.

The township, just 35 minutes from the coast, is also home to Mountview Alpaca Farm, located at O’Reilly’s Canungra Valley Vineyards. Feed the cheeky four-legged residents, Alice, Bambi and Amigo, or take them for a stroll around the vineyard grounds.

The Gold Coast’s famous beaches draw tourists to the region in droves but the city’s idyllic hinterland hamlets also hold plenty of appeal. Top of the list: Tamborine Mountain.

“There are wineries, distilleries, the Tamborine Rainforest Skywalk, glow worm caves, waterfalls, hiking trails and plenty of old-world charm,” says Gold Coast local Jess Skarratt, mum of three and TV presenter on Channel 7’s Weekender.
