We
EO: Tell us why you live and work on the Gold Coast.
MH: It's the most beautiful place in the world! I am living here still with all of the friends I grew up with. I love the music, art and culture, we have the most beautiful beaches and there’s always something to do or see. I won't be leaving!
EO: What is one thing people might find surprising about life on the GC?
MH: I guess just how different things are from suburb to suburb. It's a whole different world from the northern end of the Coast down to the southern end, with different cultures and different groups of people.
There's always something new popping up – you can go see a band at a local bar, walk around the corner to grab food at a delicious food truck and then drive 10 minutes to view installations at an art gallery. Although it's a smaller city, there is plenty to experience, you just have to know the right places to look.
EO: What's a dream winter’s day on the GC for an interstate visitor?
MH: Even in winter it’s warm enough to hit up any one of the beautiful beaches – Burleigh is always popular – and then treat yourself at the cafes in the area. After that, you can’t go wrong with parking up at one of the watering holes like Après [Surf] at Burleigh and if you’re lucky, they may have DJs spinning tunes or trivia on a Wednesday night.
EO: Hot tip for a great coffee? Daark Espresso at Labrador is my go-to.
EO: Top spot for a weekend beer?
MH: It often depends where the
weekend takes me. If we've got a show or a festival on, the band and I will spend time at the venue with our mates watching local artists perform and having beers. Miami Marketta has been one of our favourite venues to play and they've got a great selection of beverages.
My usual spots for a casual weekend beer are Après at Burleigh, Bine at Nobbys Beach or Mr P.P.'s Deli and Rooftop at Southport.
EO: Best venue for live music?
MH: Mo's Desert Clubhouse, Burleigh Bazaar, Elsewhere, Vinnies Dive and Miami Marketta.

Burleigh Pavillon

EO: The GC has a burgeoning food scene. What are your favourite places for a foodie fix?
MH: Check out Miami Marketta for street food and live music on the weekends as it has something for everyone. My other two favourites would be Mozza Mozza and Etsu Izakaya at Mermaid Beach.
EO: Any creative people, artists or brands we should know about?
MH: Yes, there are so many! Local act Peach Fur are a must to check out. They bring so much energy to their live shows and everyone really gets into it. In terms of brands, my favourite brand to come out of the Gold Coast is definitely Alfred's Apartment. They make some awesome threads that really suit the GC lifestyle, their caps and tees are always cool and I'm beginning to own an excessive amount of them [laughs].
If you're looking for a great artist, Bianca Taylor-Andrews, who runs BINC., does all our graphic design for our new music and merch. She does a lot of illustrating and everything.
EO: You were born and raised on the Gold Coast. What do you love most about the surf city?
SD: I love the laidback culture, the cafes, the nightlife – just the whole atmosphere of the city.
EO: Take us through an itinerary you’d pull together for a winter's day on the GC for a visitor?
SD: A walk along the beach is still
beautiful on the Gold Coast in winter, stopping for a hot chocolate somewhere at Burleigh.
EO: Hot tip for a great coffee or a weekend margarita?
SD: Social Brew on James Street at Burleigh for coffee and Bonita Bonita at Mermaid Beach. Then there’s Miami Marketta for great food and live music.
EO: What other hangout spots do you love?
SD: O'Reilly's Rainforest Retreat in the mountains is stunning. The Gold Coast Performance Centre at Runaway Bay is my go-to for wellness and workouts. And I like Proud Poppy at Burleigh for my retail therapy fix.

INSIDER TIPS
Whale
OF A
TIME
WORDS: AMY MILLS
The Gold Coast has surf, sun and a year-round carefree ethos – and it appears humpback whales love the seaside city as much as we humans do.
For five exciting months between late May and early November, tens of thousands of playful humpback whales migrate from the chilly seas of the Antarctic to the warmer waters off the coast of Queensland to mate
and birth their young before making the return trip.
The route, which is known as the Humpback Highway, sees close to 40,000 of these magnificent creatures – the most acrobatic of all the big whales – put on a spectacular annual show for awed onlookers.
Here’s everything you need to know about making the most of the Gold Coast’s whale-watching season.
Winter / Spring 2023 — 11 DISCOVER
WHALE SPOTTING
With the longest whale-watching season in Australia, the Gold Coast is the best place to watch the majestic humpbacks put on one of the greatest nature shows on earth.
PHOTOS: ISTOCK
Surfers Paradise city skyline
Location, Location, Location
The Gold Coast’s long whale-watching season is down to our location on Australia’s east coast – smack bang in the middle of the migration track.
The whales tend to linger longer around the surf city and come closer to shore as the waters are warmer for their sweet newborn calves.
Marine experts say the Gold Coast is definitely the best place to witness calves’ newborn behaviour and the greatest range of behavioural variation.
“Depending on the time of year, you might see young adults being playful and curious, you might see big boys competing and see mums with their babies teaching them training behaviours,” says Lauren Horner from Sea World Cruises.
Soulful Aerialists
There are myriad reasons humpback whales hold such a special place in so many hearts across the globe. One is their impressive acrobatic displays, which delight onlookers on the Gold Coast every winter and spring. During whale-watching season, it is common to see these joyful giants breaching, which is when the whale launches
itself fully out of the ocean. Experts say breaching is a form of play but it could also be a way of communicating with other whales further away.
Tail slapping or lobtailing, tail throwing, pec slapping with their long pectoral fins, and spyhopping – when humpbacks raise their heads and eyes above the water to have a look around–are other crowd-pleasing tricks you might be lucky enough to witness.
These magnificent creatures are also known for their soulful song, which scientists have found can spread from one population to another across the Pacific Ocean.
Up Close and Personal
Being dwarfed by an animal up to 15 metres long and weighing 30,000 kilograms is one of the most thrilling encounters many of us will have in our lifetimes.
The best way to witness this spectacular display up close is to jump onboard of one of the ethical and responsible whale-watching cruises departing from various locations on the northern Gold Coast.
From private luxury superyacht charters to Champagne sailing cruises and accessible and eco-certified tours – such as the Coast’s long-running Sea World Cruises – there are many ways to get up close and personal with the humpbacks. You’ll also have the chance to soak up conservation knowledge from the onboard marine experts, who inspire guests to respectfully coexist with marine life.
The beauty of whale watching on the Gold Coast is that the journey to the Humpback Highway from Main Beach is just 20 minutes, so you spend less time in transit and more time marvelling at these intelligent and playful creatures as they breach, tail slap and sing to their hearts’ content.

With epic views of Coolangatta to the south and Surfers Paradise to the north, the platform atop this iconic rock formation, accessed via a narrow staircase next to the Currumbin Beach Vikings Surf Life Saving Club on Pacific Parade, is one of the most spectacular spots to view the humpbacks and their calves in action. Note: there is no access to the top of Elephant Rock for those with mobility issues.

North Burleigh Lookout
Located between Miami and North Burleigh Surf Life Saving Clubs, this under-the-radar wooden platform on the top of the headland boasts sweeping vistas and is the perfect spot for whalewatching. Be sure to look out for pods of dolphins, too.

It may not be the highest vantage point around but the 100m-long pier at The Spit – the northernmost section of Gold Coast beach stretching from Coolangatta to Main Beach –is one of the top places for whale-watching action.
Point Danger
Located at the border of New South Wales and Queensland and overlooking famous surf beach Duranbah, this headland is a gem of a spot for whale-watching. There are also public binoculars to get a better view of these loveable mammals.
