Art lovers should not leave town without a visit to HOTA, Home of the Arts, a culturual precinct in Surfers Paradise. There are stunning views everywhere, including inside the building, particularly from the bar on the 5th floor. Don’t miss the free contemporary exhibition Here and Now: Gold Coast Triennial, a collection of works by 42 artists deeply connected to the city. There are seven interconnected spaces to experience with mediums ranging from sculpture to 2D works. The exhibition runs until Sunday 16 February. hota.com.au

LOCALS

Live like a local during your Gold Coast summer escape with these immersive insider tips.

INSIDER TIPS

EO: Why do you opt to live and work on the Gold Coast instead of a larger city like Sydney or London?
JA: I’ve been fortunate enough to travel all around Australia and overseas through sport and work. Every time I land back on the Gold Coast, I say, “Man, this is honestly the best place in the world. I’m never leaving!”
EO: What would a dream summer’s day look like for you?

JA: A dream day would be some padel tennis or golf in the morning and then a coffee from Alfred’s at Nobbys [Nobby Beach]. I’d then get on the road to do some Hope Water deliveries, then onto filming some Crispy Club videos, followed by doing a couple of haircuts at Zeppelin. I’d end the day with an ice-cold lager at Glenelg Public House at Mermaid Beach while the sun is still shining.
EO: Where to for after-work beers with the boys from Zeppelin?
JA: Definitely Cantina at Mermaid Beach for great tunes, great snacks and the coldest beers!
EO: What are some must-do foodie experiences you’d recommend to visitors this summer?
JA: A must is Rick Shores at Burleigh. The view must be one of the best in the world. I love Gemelli at Broadbeach, and Piatto at Mermaid Beach is my second home. Paloma Wine Bar at Burleigh is great. If you fancy going into Surfers to do some people-watching, try La Playa on the beachfront.

EO: Where do you go for cheap eats?
JA: Hachi Japanese Restaurant at Nobbys is elite. Aprés Surf at Burleigh is a Gold Coast local hero.
EO: Can you share any nature-based activities you love?
JA: You cannot go past going to the beach and having a swim or walking the shore just as the sun goes down, and looking back on the amazing skyline.
EO: Top three boutiques for fashion, shoes or accessories?
JA: Incu at Pacific Fair, Alfred’s Apartment or local brand Dos Ombré.
EO: What do you recommend visitors must do before they leave town?
JA: Get a pizza and some drinks and head to Burleigh Hill for the arvo to watch the sunset. It is honestly one of the best places on Earth.

Jesper
& Cara Mcilroy, photographer and model, co-founders of Mr and Mrs Agency
EO: What do you love most about your life here, particularly at Tugun?
CM: I’ve always loved Tugun. One of my best friends from childhood lived in Tugun, and I spent many weekends in the area, dreaming of living there one day. It has such a charming beach community vibe and feels much less crowded than other areas. It offers a suburban feel while still being within walking distance of the beach. Now I can’t imagine living in any other beach suburb. If we ever did move again, it would likely be inland.
EO: What would a dream summer’s day on the Gold Coast look like for the Mcilroy family?
JM: Start the day with a sunrise surf with the whole family and then kayak out to Cook Island to snorkel with the sea turtles. Then, take the short drive down to Hastings Point over the border with a picnic to watch the migrating humpback whales during sunset.
EO: Hot tip for a great coffee?
JM: Hidden Gem at Tugun.
CM: Then biking down to The Fox’s Pantry for a change of scenery.
EO: What are some family-friendly summer foodie experiences you’d recommend to visitors?
CM: We love Tarte Beach House on Currumbin Creek and OSushi at Coolangatta for delicious sushi near the beach. Costa Taco at Palm Beach serves up the best margaritas and tacos. The Palm Beach Farmers Market is always a treat, and we enjoy visiting The Ecovillage at Currumbin Valley, followed by a drive out to the rock pools.
EO: Where to for a romantic, kid-free date night?
CM: Getting a takeaway meal and sitting on Burleigh headland is pretty special. Sure, it’s not as quiet as those teenage dates there but it’s still an awesome spot. Plus, James Street has so many awesome food options that I can grab a meal and pretend I’m on a gourmet picnic, instead of just avoiding cooking!
EO: Can you share any nature-based activities you love?
JM: The kids love going to Tamborine Mountain and doing the TreeTop Challenge, which is fun for adults, too. There are great places to stay

“A little drive into the Northern Rivers creeks is one of our favourite things to do.”
up there also, so it can turn into a fun long weekend.
CM: Purling Brook Falls is my favourite hike. It’s breathtaking. We also enjoy relaxing at Snapper and Kirra; there’s just something about that divine water. A little drive into the Northern Rivers creeks is one of our favourite things to do. The drive is beautiful, and there are so many great little country pubs and places to eat down there; we’re never disappointed.
EO: One place/tip tourists wouldn’t know about the Coast?
JM: You’re never too old to learn how to surf!
CM: The Cougals! A lot of my friends have never been out there, but I’ve been going since I was a kid. It’s a super quick and easy walk, and we always follow the creek bed to swim at the bottom of the waterfall. It feels so close yet a million miles away. Absolutely dreamy. There’s also a charming little spot just before the rock pools, over a rickety bridge, that’s perfect for a picnic and a refreshing dip. It’s like our secret slice of paradise.

HIGHNatural

With pristine beaches and waterways, sub-tropical weather and a leafy hinterland, the Gold Coast really is the ultimate adventure playground. Here are the best outdoor activities for the adventurous at heart.
WORDS: AMY MILLS

Take a hike
The 57km of picture-perfect beaches may be a major drawcard for visitors, but British-born adventure-preneur
Ben Southhall says the beauty of calling the Gold Coast home is access to quality hinterland trails.
“Exploring the trails and tracks of the hinterland and trail running is my nirvana,” says Ben, who famously trumped thousands of candidates to win Best Job in the World in the Whitsunday Islands in 2009.
The Currumbin Valley local, now the founder of adventure travel company Best Life Adventures, says his favourite “adrenaline-fuelled” way to kick off the weekend is a pre-dawn start in Springbrook National Park.
“I love smashing big descents and climbs to really test my legs, as first light starts to puncture the rainforest canopy,” he says.
In fact, heading to the summit of Mount Cougal is one of Ben’s favourite ways to spend a summer day on the Gold Coast.
“It’s a very challenging climb but the rewards at sunrise are worth it with expansive views across the Mount Warning caldera and Lamington National Park,” he says.

“It’s a very challenging climb but the rewards at sunrise are worth it with expansive views.”
BEN SOUTHHALL

Kayak with dolphins
Experience the staggering natural beauty of the Coast and get the blood pumping by getting out on the pristine waterways.
“Currumbin Creek has to be the winner for me,” says Ben. “We’ve paddled from the duck pond through to the ocean a couple of times and the contrast along its length – between the upstream narrows, the populated middle section and the way the creek cleans up and opens towards the sandy mouth – is a testimony to how stunning our southern waterways are.”
Ben recommends keeping your eyes peeled for local wildlife along the way. “There’s always a unique wildlife experience on offer, from jumping mullet to dolphins and hungry pelicans.”
Currumbin Creek

Chasing waterfalls
Bowled over
Skateboarding is having its moment in the sporting spotlight after Gold Coasters Keegan Palmer and Arisa Trew took gold medals at the Paris Olympics. And there’s no better place to learn, nor to make like Keegan and hit the bowl, than the surf city.
Miami’s world-class Pizzey Park Skatepark had a $5.6 million upgrade so it could play host to major competitions and events, transforming it into the largest skatepark in Australia. The design has street-style elements with rails, kickers and ledges as well as bowls that range from low level to advanced.
There are plenty of skate schools, like Rock N Slide, run by former pro Jesse Noonan, that offer private lessons and provide all the gear.
The hinterland more than delivers on heart-pumping nature-based moments – if you know where to look.
“I love heading to Gorge Falls with my little boy Atlas,” says Ben. “It’s a fun hike at the end of Tallebudgera Valley that is well away from civilisation,” he says.
“It winds its way through the rainforest, rock hopping and crossing a few creeks before the walls of the valley close right in and squeeze you through a narrow gap, which finally opens up to the most magnificent pool and waterfall.”

Pizzey Park Skatepark

Treetop flying
After being destroyed in the Christmas storms of 2023, the Canon Flyer guided zipline tour at Tamborine Mountain will reopen this summer. Explore seven ziplines in the middle of dense ancient rainforest before dropping into Cedar Creek Gorge and flying just above the tree-top canopy at speeds of up to 70km/h.
The TreeTop Challenge, located inside Thunderbird Park, also provides an opportunity to spend a day immersed in nature – while conquering your fears.
“Our kids love going to Tamborine Mountain and doing the TreeTop Challenge, which is fun for adults, too!” says Gold Coast-based photographer Jesper Mcilroy. “There are great places to stay up there also, so it can turn into a fun long weekend.”
Reputable offshore scuba-diving tours can take you to local reefs, wrecks and islands.
Water world
The Gold Coast is known for its iconic surf culture but there’s a host of different ways to experience some pulse-raising thrills on the water.
From jet-ski safaris to Fliteboarding experiences and gnarly jet-boat rides, there’s no shortage of water-based fun to be had.
For those who prefer exploring the phenomenal marine world from under the water, reputable offshore scubadiving tours can take you to local reefs, wrecks and islands.

coastCULINARY
From quality street eats and lively neighbourhood joints to busting European-style bistros and dining rooms, the Gold Coast is a booming culinary haven. Pull up a seat at these foodie favourites for a true taste of the city.
WORDS: AMY MILLS

It’s Saturday night and the buzzing atmosphere inside the relaxed neighbourhood bistro is reminiscent of a bustling brasserie in New York or Paris.
However, Restaurant Labart is, in fact, tucked away on an unassuming back street of Burleigh Heads where head chef Stefano Rosi is preparing unpretentious yet flavoursome dishes like barbecue quail with charcuterie sauce and gnocchi, and cuttlefish with garden peas and pancetta.
Celebrating its sixth birthday this year, Restaurant Labart was recently named Queensland Restaurant of the Year in the Gourmet Traveller Restaurant Guide 2024.
The win, ahead of some stellar venues in Queensland’s capital of Brisbane, cemented the Gold Coast’s status as a bona fide culinary hotspot.
Owners Karla and Alex Munoz Labart, also behind the award-winning Paloma Wine Bar on Burleigh’s James Street, say they are thrilled the accolade has put the spotlight on the Gold Coast’s burgeoning dining scene.
“We really believe in the dining scene here,” says Karla. “A lot of operators have taken a chance on the Gold Coast, with great venues spread right along the coast. From Cantina, Piatto, Etsu and North Room at
Paloma Wine Bar
Restaurant Labart owners, Karla and Alex Labart

Mermaid, to the new Cadillac Supper Club at Palm Beach all the way to Bar Evelyn at Coolangatta.
“We still have a way to go but it is changing.”
Europe on the Gold Coast
When they opened their doors in 2018, the Labarts’ desire was to create an accessible neighbourhood bistro, a place where locals could pop in for a glass of wine and a few dishes once a week, a concept new to the Gold Coast.
Given Alex is renowned for his previous work as head chef of Sydney’s Monopole, locals began to consider Labart as more of a fine

right on
an outdoor playground and great food,
dining, ‘special occasion’ venue. The Labarts leaned into that with a set menu and elevated offering.
However, the cost-of-living crisis and a desire to create the lively European-style space they originally intended prompted the couple to introduce a more relaxed iteration of Labart in mid-2024 – and Gold Coast foodies are embracing it in droves.
“We managed to get an outdoor dining licence, we opened up the curtains and it really feels like there’s a buzz in the room,” says Karla. “We added white tablecloths to bring in a bistro feel and people have really embraced it. Locals are coming in every few weeks so there are always familiar faces in the room. It feels good.”
New wave
Like the Labarts, Simone Tunbridge, co-founder of Imlach Hospitality Group, is proud to play a part in the Gold Coast’s metamorphosis from tourist town to major player in the arts, culinary and craft-brewing spaces.
Simone and business partner Scott Imlach are the power duo behind Bine Bar & Dining at Nobby Beach, Miami’s Precinct Brewing Co. and Asian eatery Hideaway Kitchen & Bar, which is approaching its eighth birthday.
“During the pandemic, people spent so much time at home so they are enjoying going out and having experiences again,” she says. “It's an exciting time.”
5 NEVER-FAIL FAMILY FOODIE FAVES
Need something to keep everyone happy? Here's your answer.

This laneway-style family-friendly favourite has a slew of street-food stalls, live music and a fun atmosphere for all ages.

A cafe, museum and petting zoo just 15 minutes from Nerang, the Rivermill is a top spot to let the kids run free and interact with alpacas, deer, pigs and the turtles living their best lives in the Coomera River.

CAFE CATALINA
One of the Coast’s lesser-known gems, this Southport eatery is located close to the water in the middle of the Broadwater Parklands, and is kid and dog friendly.

PASTURE & CO
Tucked away in the Ecovillage in Currumbin Valley, this scenic cafe offers delicious, nutrient-dense fare and lush surroundings to enjoy and explore.

FOODIE FEAST
“The dynamic has flipped and the Gold Coast is no longer the little sibling.”
New guard
Local writer Tushna Mehta, of The Food Hedonist blog, says the Gold Coast is now delivering incredible dining experiences that feel refreshingly laid-back.
“Just a few years ago, locals would be making trips to Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne for their foodie fix and many in hospitality would, too, be looking to these cities for inspiration,” she says.
“The dynamic has flipped and the Gold Coast is no longer the little sibling. And, for the most part, you’re not waiting an hour for a table at a cafe or having to make reservations months in advance like you may have to at some places in Sydney.”
Tushna says the new wave of restaurant and bar openings has added serious credibility to the scene, with Kost and Isla Cantina two of her personal favourites.
Another newcomer is Lars Bar & Grill, in the new boutique retail, dining and lifestyle village, The Oxley 1823 in Mermaid Beach. At the helm is Lars Kollrepp, the protege of restaurateur Simon Gloftis. Until recently, Lars was the executive chef of all Gloftis’ Brisbane restaurants, including Hellenika, SK Steak & Oyster, Sunshine and Sushi Room, but decided to return to his hometown to open his own venue.
“I had the dream of opening my own restaurant for a very long time,” says Lars, the son of local hospitality icon Marty Kollrep of Oskars fame.
“I jumped at the chance when it came. I have a deep appreciation for fine-dining cuisine, gained through my many years in the industry; however being a Gold Coast boy, I love the laidback lifestyle it brings.”
With a focus on woodfired steak and fresh local seafood – think: caviar tarts, fresh oysters, baked scallops and pork tomahawk with burnt onion

mustard – Lars Bar & Grill joins Oxley venues Moustache wine and espresso bar and oyster bar and sashimi restaurant, Eska.
Street eats
Like the more refined dining scene, street food on the Gold Coast has come a long way in the past few years.
Miami’s hip new venue Roji Cat Beer Bar, inspired by the owners’ love for Japan, serves up a fresh twist on Japanese street eats.
The buzzing venue is just a short bike ride from Precinct Brewing Co, where gourmet pizza and beerfriendly share plates are on the menu, and night street-food and live-music venue, Miami Marketta.
With more venues opening their doors in the coming months, it’s fair to say the Gold Coast may soon become Australia’s foodie capital.
“The Gold Coast culinary scene is absolutely buzzing,” says Tushna.
