WHAT’S NEW HERE
WHY I MOVED HERE
When considering a move, finding a place that offers both charm and opportunity is essential.
The Batesville area offers just that and more. Nestled in the scenic foothills of the Ozarks, our town seamlessly blends small-town charm with modern amenities. Our vibrant downtown area, friendly community, and picturesque landscapes make Batesville an inviting place to call home. With a rich history and a welcoming atmosphere, we pride ourselves on being a town where newcomers are greeted with open arms and quickly become part of our close-knit community.
Check out their stories.
We moved to this area thanks to First Community Bank, but the warmth of the community truly turned it into our home. Independence County is one of the most beautiful regions in the state. With homegrown industries, thriving small businesses, great public schools, and progressive leaders, we’re constantly in awe of what this town achieves! Though we may be “small,” our strength makes us mighty! Our family thrives here, and we take great pride in calling it our home.
We moved back to Batesville for the simple joy of raising our children close to their grandparents, where they could grow up in a town with deep multi-generational roots, surrounded by family, history, and the strength of a small-town community. The beauty of Batesville — from its charming downtown to the peaceful river views — has always held a special place in our hearts. We're beyond grateful to call this place home…again!
THE CLONINGERS
During the pandemic, our family invited us to visit Batesville, and we saw something really special in this vibrant community that values faith, family, and education. When remote work became an option for us, we decided to move and raise our kids here. We love the close access to outdoor adventures, family-friendly community events, and, of course, the Christmas lights!
THE HOLMES FAMILY
I spent my entire life in larger cities. While dating my husband, I often joked about 'probably having to move to Batesville one day.' Shortly after getting engaged, we moved here to start our family, and it turned out to be the best decision we could have made. The support and strong sense of community in this town are unparalleled. Batesville cherishes its traditions and history while also being innovative and welcoming to younger families and newcomers alike. We're proud to be raising our son in this wonderful place we now call home.

BEST SPOTS TO FLOAT, FISH, + HUNT
What is it about the water that attracts people? Maybe it’s the wild sounds—the roar, splash, and splatter of the water rushing over and between the rocks. Or, perhaps it’s the lure of breaking the glassy surface of a fog-covered river.
Either way, the miles of streams and rivers in Independence County off er anglers plenty of chances to land a trophy or catch a limit of various freshwater species. If you’re more of a leisure fl oater — we have something for you, too.
Running through the heart of Batesville is POKE BAYOU (also known as Polk Bayou, but that’s a debate for another time). It was home to the fi rst settlement in the area and remains a hot spot for nature lovers today. The bayou winds through Batesville and spills into the White River. Anglers, kayakers, and canoers enjoy the bayou and its recreational opportunities. Public access points are available at Poke Bayou Park and near Bayou Street.
The mighty WHITE RIVER off ers a wide range of boating adventures. Launch your boat above the dam at Kennedy Park or below the dam on Riverbank Road. Take a walk on the sandbar and skip rocks on the shores of the beautiful White River.
ROWE LAKE , located to the west of the Batesville Community Center, is a 2-acre lake stocked and managed by the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission (AGFC). The lake is home to annual youth fi shing derbies and a cross-lake pedestrian walkway.
THERE’S A WHOLE WORLD TO EXPLORE OUT THERE. START RIGHT IN OUR BACKYARD, IN THE MOST GEOGRAPHICALLY DIVERSE LANDSCAPE IN ARKANSAS.
You can fi nd another AGFC-managed waterway just south of the White River. RAMSEY SLOUGH features a boat ramp and a handicap-accessible fi shing pier.
Lyon College’s BRYAN LAKE is a quiet fi shing hole perfect for long walks with your dog. But it’s also home to one of Lyon’s deepest traditions — the freshman raft race, where newcomers build cardboard boats and vie for bragging rights.
The JAMESTOWN WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA is managed by AGFC and is located on the county’s western side. Hunters have the opportunity to pursue a variety of species, including whitetail deer, quail, bear, squirrel, and turkey.
On the eastern border of the county, you’ll fi nd JACKSONPORT STATE PARK at the confl uence of the White and Black Rivers. There are several boat ramps, marinas, fi shing piers, and swimming beaches. It’s also home to the region’s favorite cryptic, the White River Monster. Scan code to see more adventures.

BUILDING A BETTER BATESVILLE
Pardon our progress, y'all.
In a remarkable demonstration of community engagement and a shared vision for the future, Batesville voters took a significant step in our journey to becoming a better, more vibrant community. Residents overwhelmingly approved a $145 million investment plan, laying the groundwork for transformative changes. This includes not only park renovations but also crucial water infrastructure improvements, a testament to our commitment to essential services.
We're creating a space that will cater to a variety of recreational interests. Nestled on the banks of the majestic White River, the renovated park will be a testament to Batesville's commitment to preserving history and embracing ecological significance. The park's trail system, play areas, water features, and the Events Center will offer diverse recreational experiences for all.
One of the main attractions of the new Riverside Park is its extensive trail system, which features trails suitable for walking, jogging, and biking.
Other upgrades to Riverside Park include several amenities, such as sports courts, inclusive play areas, water play, nature play, and a bike and skate park.
Long-term plans also call for expanding the greenway trail linking Riverside Park to
the Downtown area. Expansions of the trail will continue to be funded through matching grants.
But it's not just about fun. Our city is also taking care of essential things like our water. We're replacing a 1960s-era water treatment plant with a modernized system to support the expanding population and industries.
So, please pardon our progress as we embark on a journey that will undoubtedly shape our community's identity for generations to come.

KIDCONNECT
Parents often struggle to find childcare due to demand for quality, licensed early childhood education programs. The search for reliable childcare can be stressful and time-consuming.
Recognizing this challenge, IMPACT Independence County’s Excel by Eight and Local Leads teams have joined forces to launch KidConnect, an online platform designed to connect parents to available local programs and parenting resources.
KidConnect is an innovative and user-friendly online platform aimed to help make parenting a little easier. It is a centralized, easy-to-use interface where parents can match with early childhood education options across Independence County that meet their specific needs, making finding the right fit for children less stressful and time-consuming. Parents can use the platform to filter their options by

location, children served, and variables for access like funding options accepted and operational hours, as well as view the program’s quality rating.
By offering a comprehensive view of available options, KidConnect empowers parents to make informed decisions that best suit their family’s needs, instilling in them the confidence that they’re making the right choice for their children.
“KidConnect will revolutionize how parents in Independence County find and connect with quality childcare options,” said Batesville Area Chamber of Commerce COO Jamie Rayford. “By
providing a user-friendly, centralized platform, KidConnect ensures that parents can easily understand which quality childcare options exist in our county, giving them a strong starting place for making a good decision and helping build a stronger, more connected community.”
KidConnect only partners with programs licensed by the Arkansas Department of Education’s Office of Early Childhood that meet requirements for licensing , ensuring that every option available to parents is a trusted, safe, and nurturing environment for their children.
Additionally, KidConnect provides resources for childcare centers to support their operations and continuous improvement. By partnering with KidConnect, programs can increase their visibility, attract more families, and access support resources and tools for their operations, making it a beneficial partnership for both families and programs.
“Partnering with KidConnect will allow us to reach more families in need of quality childcare, and track those needs to help make more real-time decisions about demand. It’s a game-changer for our county programs’ enrollment, and we appreciate how easy it is to get connected with new families,” said Debbie Mize, executive director of North Central Child Care Aware.
KidConnect also offers resources for parenting resources including tips on challenges most families face during the early years of their child’s development. This information can be filtered by age and topic and also contains a variety of modalities for learning based on the
amount of time a parent has to engage. “You can watch a video several minutes long, read a full article with more resources linked inside or you can be introduced to social media accounts to follow which have 30 second hacks for parenting,” said Jamie Rayford, “and this is really all aimed at a greater goal of equipping parents to better prepare children for entering Kindergarten more ready to learn.”
“KidConnect is not just a tool for finding childcare —it is about meeting parents and providers where they are and giving them the tools to help our children be more ready for school each day leading up to Kindergarten entry, giving them the strongest start possible in their educational journey,” concluded Rayford.
“The launch of KidConnect shows the power of collaboration between our community organizations that serve children and families. This platform is a win for parents and schools and a testament to our commitment to improving early childhood education in Independence County,” added Lorrie McClure, director of Parents as Teachers and Community Schools Coordinator for Batesville Preschool.

Winding its way through rugged hills and shadowed limestone, it meets the storied White River, carrying with it tales both whispered and forgotten.
This is no ordinary stream; its banks hold remnants of a world once filled with the sounds of native peoples who found shelter and sustenance here, surrounded by thick cane, towering timber, and wild creatures. It was here that French explorers, drawn by tales of abundance, established their trading post, and where, in the 1820s, determined settlers, weary of the river’s fickle floods, carved out the beginnings of Batesville’s historic district. The Bayou was their lifeblood—a constant companion and a powerful force woven into each chapter of the town’s history.
But here’s where the lore deepens. What, after all these years, should we call this mystical waterway? Some say it is Poke Bayou, named for the lush, green Pokeweed that blankets the land in late summer, a toxic and treasured plant whose tender leaves were once boiled down into a “Poke Sallet.” Others will tell you its name is Polk Bayou, a title born, they say, from a curious twist of fate. As legend has it, a mapmaker unfamiliar with Southern dialects once misheard the local pronunciation, committing “Polk” to
paper—perhaps believing it to honor a family of note or even President James K. Polk himself.
And so, the Bayou’s very name became a riddle, woven with folklore and steeped in mystery.
Even today, it feels like an enchanted place. Those who visit are drawn into its spell, invited to explore its banks and ponder the tales it hides. The stream is not just a part of our history, but also a part of our present, with public access at Polk Bayou Park on White Drive, near North Central Avenue, and at Kennedy Park—each spot offering a welcoming doorway to its timeless serenity.
Yet, the question lingers: Is it Poke Bayou or Polk Bayou? This mystery is as enduring as the waterway itself, leaving each visitor to wonder and decide. As with all good lore, perhaps the answer lies not in fact but in the stories we choose to tell.
