What is it about the water that pulls people in? Perhaps it’s the wild sounds. The roar, splash, and splatter of the water rushing over and between the rocks. In other cases, it may be the lure of breaking the glassy surface of an early-morning fog-covered river or lake. Maybe it’s the quietness of these beautiful waterways.
Either way, the miles of streams and rivers in Independence County offer anglers plenty of chances to land a trophy or catch a limit of various freshwater species. Or, perhaps you’re more of a leisure floater—we have something for you, too.
Running through the heart of Batesville is POKE BAYOU (sometimes known as Polk Bayou, but that’s a debate for another time). It was home to the first settlement in the Batesville area and remains a hot spot for nature lovers today. The bayou winds through Batesville and spills into the White River. Anglers, kayakers, and canoers enjoy the bayou and its recreational opportunities.
The mighty WHITE RIVER offers an assortment of boating adventures, from fishing to skiing. Launch your boat above the dam at Kennedy Park or below the dam on Riverbank Road. Take a walk on the sandbar and skip rocks on the shores of the beautiful White River.
ROWE LAKE , located to the west of the Batesville Community Center, is a 2-acre lake stocked and managed by the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission (AGFC). The lake is home to an annual youth fishing derby and a cross-lake pedestrian walkway.
You can find another AGFC-managed waterway just south of the White River. RAMSEY SLOUGH features a boat ramp and a handicap-accessible fishing pier.
THERE’S A WHOLE WORLD TO EXPLORE OUT THERE. START RIGHT IN OUR BACKYARD, IN THE MOST GEOGRAPHICALLY DIVERSE LANDSCAPE IN THE STATE OF ARKANSAS.
Lyon College’s BRYAN LAKE is usually a quiet fishing hole and perfect for walking your dog. But it’s also home to two of the college’s biggest traditions—the freshman raft race and the senior walk. Stop by Lyon to cast a line or walk your dog.
SPRING CREEK OUTFITTERS manages 2,000 acres of quality whitetail, turkey, bear, and upland bird habitat. Adhering to a comprehensive management plan for almost 35 years has allowed the wild game to mature, breed, and improve its stock with each passing year. The Gillihan family’s dedication to the hard work required to properly manage, improve, and maintain quality control over their top-tier Ozark resource gives their customers the best experiences year after year.
The JAMESTOWN WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA is an AGFC-managed area located on the county’s western side. Hunters can take a variety of species—from whitetail deer, quail, bear, squirrel, turkey, and more.
On the eastern border of the county, you’ll find JACKSONPORT STATE PARK at the confluence of the White and Black Rivers. There are several boat ramps, marinas, fishing piers, and swimming beaches.

A day trip to the area isn’t complete without a trip to BLANCHARD SPRINGS CAVERNS, located north of Mountain View in the Ozark National Forest. The caverns are shaped by an active mountain spring that pours into a glassy-surfaced trout pond called Mirror Lake.

Then head north to MAMMOTH SPRING STATE PARK home to one of the world’s largest natural springs. Mammoth Spring, flowing at over nine million gallons of 58-degree water per hour, serves as the headwaters for the SPRING RIVER and provides plenty of fresh water throughout the year. The river is crystal-clear, with long pools and whitewater falls. The scenery is mostly hardwood forest with some rocky bluffs. The constant flow from Mammoth Spring makes the Spring River one of the state’s best year-round floats, even during the summer months when river levels tend to fall.
Take a trip to GREERS FERRY LAKE , where you can enjoy swimming, boating, fishing, and more.
Then continue to Heber Springs, where you can enjoy the wonderful view of a 50’ waterfall at BRIDAL VEIL FALLS before taking a hike to the top of SUGARLOAF MOUNTAIN, a 690-foot-tall erosional remnant beside the Little Red River.

Built in a garage in early 2002, the first Bad Boy Mower set the template for every mower made afterward. Proudly considered ‘over-built’ by the industry, the all-steel, allwelded, all-fabricated mower packed a huge horsepower engine for speed and performance. It also featured a unique to the zero-turn industry ‘swing-away’ design that opened the mower up for owners to get to every serviceable part or clean up easily. Unlike any other zero-turn available, this ‘Mow with an Attitude’ was ready to hit the market.
Presented for the very first time at the International Lawn and Garden Show in Louisville, Kentucky, this Bad Boy Mower won the prestigious “Product of the Year” award and quickly began signing up dealers across the country.
Building on this success, Bad Boy Mowers has introduced a string of patented improvements to zero-turn mowers and has expanded models from the most powerful commercial-grade diesel and gasoline mowers to homeowner value mowers
that don’t sacrifice an inch of build quality. The success of Bad Boy Mowers is visible in its growth. Beginning with less than 50,000 square feet of manufacturing and office space, the all-Batesville footprint now covers more than a million square feet—and is growing. Bad Boy’s rapid growth is due to its greatest asset— its exceptional staff. What started with twenty employees has grown to over eight hundred. Almost fifteen percent of the employees have been with the company for over ten years, and many of the people who built the first mower continue to work to ensure its legacy.
Bad Boy thrives in Northeast Arkansas — right in America’s heartland. With its solid work ethic and tough-as-nails approach to manufacturing, Bad Boy matches some of the world’s most advanced manufacturing technology and lasers with the skill and creativity of craftsmen committed to delivering the strongest, most powerful zero-turn mowers—with the cleanest cuts—for the best value in the industry.
With Batesville as the hub for economic activity in North Central Arkansas, Bad Boy Mowers also continues to grow in other business segments. New and exciting Bad Boy products are being added to the family of tough-built, tough-working machines. A line of sub-compact and compact tractors, with a full range of tractor implements, built just as tough as the mowers themselves, have been added since 2020.
Bad Boy represents the exceptional success of companies working closely in the businessfriendly state of Arkansas, which offers a range of competitive incentives encouraging job creation and investment. They have also taken full advantage of Independence County’s ability to grow small local companies and attract major corporations with unique cooperation between local government, education, and the private sector. The company works closely with the University of Arkansas Community College at Batesville, Ozarka
College, Lyon College, and ASU-Newport to find highlyqualified welders and skilled laborers to fill its hundreds of full-time fabrication positions. Bad Boy also supports the advancement of its employees through its higher education tuition reimbursement programs.
With over a thousand independent dealerships and two thousand retail locations, Bad Boy mowers are found in neighborhoods throughout the country. Bad Boy makes it a priority to support local businesses through apparel, purchasing Arkansasmade steel, and corporate partnerships. They actively support disaster relief in the communities they serve and sponsor public and private school events, non-profit organizations, and sports teams throughout their community network. It’s not uncommon to see the Bad Boy logo on basketball courts, youth league jerseys, or 5K t-shirts.
Nationally, you can see their partnerships with the Pinstripe Bowl at Yankee Stadium, the Kansas City Chiefs, the St. Louis Cardinals, SeaWorld, Busch Gardens, Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series, Professional Bull Riders (PBR) events, NASCAR teams, and more. Bad Boy has collaborated with country music icons such as Willie Nelson and athletes like MLB star Ian Kinsler, North Carolina Tar Heels basketball player Armando Bacot and Arkansas Razorbacks basketball player Anthony Black.
Bad Boy gives back to those who risk their lives daily to protect and defend our beloved nation. It offers a significant discount to veterans, active duty military, our nation’s first responders, firefighters, and law enforcement. More than ten percent of Bad Boy’s workforce are veterans, so they know firsthand that our national heroes are the backbone of our country, community, and businesses.
What started with one very tough mower has transformed Batesville, Arkansas, into the epicenter of the zero-turn mower world. And by the looks of their growth, they’re just getting started.
