Para empezar a sanar Los momentos difíciles nunca dejarán de serlo, pero una buena lectura puede enseñarnos a afrontarlos.

Hard times will always be hard, but a good book can offer us lessons on how to cope.

Paula “Escucha, Paula, voy a contarte una historia, para que cuando despiertes no estés tan perdida”, escribió Isabel Allende a su hija, quien en 1991 cayó enferma y luego en coma. Esta novela, catártica para la autora chilena, es también un autorretrato y un homenaje a la mujer. Estas páginas escritas a pie de cama de hospital son conmovedoras y amorosas. “Listen, Paula, I’m going to tell you a story, so that when you awake you won’t be so lost,” wrote Isabel Allende to her daughter in 1991, when she fell into an illness-induced coma.

This novel –a catharsis for the Chilean author– is also a selfportrait and an homage to women. Written beside a hospital bed, the pages of this novel are a moving, loving tribute.

Del amor y otros demonios A Sierva María de Todos los Ángeles la mordió un perro y la contagió de rabia. La Corona, al no entender la enfermedad, pensó que se trataba de algo demoniaco y encerró a la chica en un convento.

Esta novela, devenida de uno de los reportajes que Gabriel García Márquez realizó como periodista, apunta a la esperanza y a ese amor que puede encontrarse hasta en el encierro. Sierva María de Todos los Ángeles was bitten by a dog and contracted rabies. Not understanding the illness, the crown believed it was something diabolical and shut the girl up in a convent. This novel, which is the product of reports made by Gabriel García Márquez as a journalist, is a sign of hope and the love that can be found even when shut in.

La historia de Yara es sobre discriminación, violencia contra la mujer y esclavitud. Retrata la vida de una joven que vive en el único pueblo libre de la Corona en el México del siglo XVII y es vendida para servir a Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz. Pero esta novela de Ignacio Casas también es sobre el amor y la sororidad, sobre alguien que, pese al encierro, es un espíritu libre e indomable. The story of Yara is one of discrimination, violence toward women, and slavery. It depicts the life of a young woman who, after living in the only town free from the rule of the Spanish crown in 17th-century Mexico, is sold to serve Sister Juana Inés de la Cruz. Este es el escenario contra el que está luchando la Organización de la Naciones Unidas con sus 17 metas para el Desarrollo Sostenible para promover la prosperidad y el cuidado del planeta, las cuales Aeroméxico respalda.

Con el plan Acción por el Clima se busca, entre otros objetivos, reducir emisiones contaminantes y apostar por energías renovables. También mejorar la educación sobre el cambio climático y concientizar sobre su peligro. Asimismo se pretende llevar el tema a las políticas de cada país, como ha sucedido con el Acuerdo de París que ratificaron 175 naciones.

De manera individual es crucial que las personas se sumen y comprometan a través de una vida más sustentable como el uso de energías limpias, reducir la dependencia del plástico y consumir productos locales.

Para mí es dar un paso firme hacia mi compromiso con la causa de igualdad de género. Es una causa que ha sido importante para mí desde hace mucho tiempo. WHAT RESPONSIBILITY DOES IT ENTAIL? Being an ambassador is a full time job. Even when I’m not working specifically with UN Women on some task, I feel the responsibility to be consistent with the message and title. 3 ARTESANAL HAND-CRAFTED Después de la cosecha, se obtienen y se cuecen las pencas del maguey. Estas se comprimen para extraer su néctar y el líquido se lleva a ollas de barro para destilar dos o tres veces. De ahí pasa a las tinas de fermentación y el resultado es el transparente y aromático mezcal. After the harvest, the maguey leaves are gathered and cooked. They are then compressed in order to obtain their juice and this liquid is taken to earthen pots to be distilled two or three times. Then, it goes to fermentation tanks, resulting in the transparent, aromatic mezcal.

Al final, el mezcal se guarda en garrafones de vidrio. Todo el proceso contribuye a la economía local, no solo por la gente que trabaja en el palenque, sino también porque se utilizan productos hechos en los alrededores: machetes, barretas para cultivo y cosecha, tinas de fermentación y cazos de cobre, entre otros. The Candelaria palenque (a rustic distillery) can be found in Santa Catarina de Minas, in Oaxaca’s Central Valleys region. Here, mezcal maestro Eduardo Ángeles, who inherited his knowhow and passion for the spirit from his family, makes this drink with the magic of ancestral customs and respect for the plant that gives it to us, the maguey.

Tras decidir qué objetos mantenemos, debemos encontrarle un lugar específico a cada uno.

Not only can they tell you all about the plant and animal life, they also work to preserve the site.

The park is located just 18.6 miles from the Magical Town of Sombrerete. You have to go to try the brujitas –a type of fried corn empanada stuffed with shredded beef.

Las estrellas brillan intensamente sobre el Parque Nacional Sierra de Órganos, y el murmullo de la naturaleza invita a descansar a los campistas que durante el día han explorado algunos de los senderos a la sombra de sus majestuosas formaciones rocosas.

Sus 1,125 hectáreas de extensión son uno de los secretos naturales mejor guardados de Zacatecas y un complemento ideal para quienes ya han disfrutado de la intensa vida cultural de la capital. También es uno de los tantos lugares en México a los que queremos regresar, tan pronto sea posible.

Sus formaciones rocosas, que parecen estirarse como queriendo alcanzar el cielo, semejan las pipas de un órgano.

De ahí el nombre que se le ha dado al parque. Además de hacer senderismo o acampar, los visitantes pueden organizar días de campo o practicar ciclismo de montaña. Para conocer a fondo la flora y fauna, conviene contratar el servicio de los guías especializados quienes además, trabajan en la preservación del lugar.

El parque está situado a solo 30 kilómetros del Pueblo Mágico de Sombrerete, a donde es obligado llegar para saborear unas “brujitas”, como se conoce a una suerte de empanadas de nixtamal fritas, rellenas de carne deshebrada.

Cassandra Thomas (Carey Mulligan) era una joven prometedora… hasta que un suceso descarriló su futuro; ahora intenta sobrellavar su enojo con un ritual que le aplica a diferentes hombres cada noche, pero tras reencontrarse con un compañero de la carrera, se verá obligada a confrontar su pasado y tomar una decisión.

Promising Young Woman se estrenó durante el pasado Festival de Sundance, donde los actores Carey Mulligan y Bo Burnham y la directora Emerald Fennell hablaron sobre esta original interpretación del concepto de venganza. “Quería que Casey rechazara la cultura que otros aceptan; la idea de callarse, olvidarlo y seguir adelante. “I feel that what this story does quite elegantly is to question what it really means to be a ‘good’ guy,” notes Burnham. “It’s easy to classify men like Harvey Weinstein as ‘monsters,’ but we’ve also got to recognize the monstrous behaviors that are present in us,” he concludes.

El clásico cubano se convierte en una fresca alternativa frutal en esta versión con vino de sandía. En un vaso largo con hielo, sirve 30ml de ron blanco, 60ml de jugo de limón y 60ml de agua mineral.

Después, agrega 120ml de Stella Rosa Watermelon y revuelve suavamente. Como garnish, coloca una rebanadita de limón y unas hojas de menta.

Nada nos traslada a un paraíso tropical tan inmediatamente como la piña. Para este coctel, sirve hielo en un vaso, y después agrega 30ml de jugo de naranja y 30ml de jugo de piña, seguidos de 120ml de Stella Rosa Pineapple. Un toque de coco rallado y una rebanadita de limón como garnish le darán el toque final.

La octava Copa de Ski Aeroméxico, celebrada en Whistler, Canadá, reunió a 240 competidores en tres categorías distintas y eventos como el clásico après ski.

The eighth Aeroméxico Ski Tournament held in Whistler, British Columbia, Canada, brought together 240 in three categories and events like the classic après ski.

En bajada, los esquís cortan la nieve de esas blanquísimas laderas, y a los costados se va dejando el verde de los árboles.

El miedo a la velocidad y las alturas se intercambian por la emoción del mejor tiempo y la llegada a la meta.

Esto es lo que sintieron 240 personas que, en tres categorías distintas para esquí y snowboard, participaron en la octava Copa de Ski Aeroméxico en Whistler, Canadá.

Las montañas de Blackomb y Whistler, en la Columbia Británica, lo mismo acogieron que desafiaron a los competidores, quienes, sin importar su lugar en la tabla, se hicieron uno mismo con la naturaleza de este lugar, sede de los Juegos Olímpicos de Invierno en 2010.

Invitados especiales de Aeroméxico y Grupo Imagen gozaron del destino ubicado a hora y media de Vancouver, al que la aerolínea llega desde hace cinco años.

El esfuerzo físico que se puso en las montañas fue recompensado en el restaurante Merlin’s durante el après ski, momento que consiste en comer y tomar un trago mientras se intercambian opiniones sobre el descenso. También con recorridos por las villas del lugar y una cena especial en The Chalet del hotel Fairmont Château Whistler, pero sobre todo, con la convivencia.

That was the experience of 240 people who, in three different ski and snowboard categories, took part in the 8th Aeromexico Ski Championships in Whistler, British Columbia.

Blackcomb and Whistler mountains simultaneously welcomed and challenged competitors who, regardless of their place on the scoreboard, merged with the natural landscape that served as site of the 2010 Winter Olympic Games.

Special guests of Aeromexico and Grupo Imagen enjoyed the site located 90 minutes outside of Vancouver, which Aeromexico has been serving for five years.

All the physical exertion left on the mountainside was rewarded at Merlin’s Restaurant with an après ski consisting of eating, drinking, and trading experiences from the slopes. Not to mention trips to local villas and a special dinner at The Chalet at Fairmont Château Whistler, but, more than anything, a good time spent together.

Son tan comunes y funcionales en nuestro día a día que pasamos por alto su diseño. Hoy celebramos a algunos de estos héroes anónimos, esos objetos cotidianos que cambiaron nuestra vida y se han convertido en humildes obras maestras.

A algunos, también por sus historia, se les ha reconocido con exposiciones en museos como el MoMA de Nueva York.

They’re so common and useful in our everyday lives that we never think about who designed them. Today, we celebrate the anonymous heroes, those everyday objects that changed our lives and have become modest masterpieces. Some have been recognized, along with their history, in exhibitions in museums like New York’s MoMA.

cepillos dentales hechos con hueso, madera y cerdas animales, pero fue hasta el siglo XVIII que comenzaron a fabricarse de forma masiva con un diseño del inglés William Addis (se dice que lo ideó en la cárcel). Como los conocemos hoy –con cerdas de nylon y forma ergonómica– nacieron en los años 30, después de que DuPont inventó el polímero sintético. Su empleo se le atribuye a una princesa del imperio bizantino (mal visto, por cierto); más tarde fue adoptado en Italia gracias a la pasta, y Catalina de Medici lo puso de moda en Francia. Hoy se antoja indispensable y hay varios tipos diseñados para diferentes alimentos, cuyo uso responde a reglas de etiqueta. However, just a few years prior its use was ridiculed as a thing of the rich, even too feminine. It was attributed to a (frowned upon) Byzantine Empire princess. Later, it was adopted in Italy thanks to pasta and Catalina de Medici made it fashionable in France.

Today it is considered essential and there are all kinds of designs for different foods, whose use corresponds to different rules of etiquette.

En busca de una forma de preservar los alimentos para sus tropas, Napoleón Bonaparte propuso premiar a quien tuviera la mejor idea. Retraso. En caso de retraso imputable a la aerolínea, aplicarán las políticas de compensación establecidas por la misma.*

¡Ups! Se me cayó la tarta (Ooops! Mi è scivolata la crostatina) es el nombre del emblemático postre de Massimo Bottura, chef de la Osteria Francescana, premiado con tres estrellas Michelin. El diseño de este plato fue un accidente –a un miembro de su equipo, literalmente, se le cayó el plato–, pero tuvo tal éxito que así se quedó y comenzó a servirse con pinceladas de salsa zabaione y helado de limón debajo de una galleta destrozada. Es un platillo roto (y hermoso) que se reconstruye en la boca.

Varios años antes de esta creación, el chef Ferran Adrià, en elBulli, ya hacía cocina molecular y deconstrucciones, pero uno de sus primeros platos en volverse icónico fue el llamado Los salmonetes Gaudí (1987). Para hacerlo se inspiró en el mosaico fragmentado de azulejos que caracteriza la obra del arquitecto español. Adrià servía el salmonete caliente y limpio (en esa época se acostumbraba empanizado o rebosado), y encima ponía un mosaico de vegetales.

Y es que el diseño de los platos puede estar inspirado en el arte, o ser por sí arte mismo. Según Mikel Alonso, chef de Ko Ma en la Ciudad de México, “al emplatar colocamos una serie de técnicas abanderadas por colores, texturas y sabores que, juntas, dan paso a un cuadro culinario. Cuando el emplatado empieza por un lienzo en blanco, nos enfrentamos a un camino artístico”.

Para Rodolfo Guzmán, del restaurante Boragó en Santiago de Chile, hay áreas de la cocina que pueden estar vinculadas con el arte y una de ellas es, precisamente, el emplatado. “La comida no solo tiene que ser deliciosa, provocarte o estremecerte por el ingrediente, el método de cocción, la elaboración, la calidad, por un sinfín de cosas, sino también tiene que ser bella, transportarte, producirte algo y conmoverte”, asegura.

Ooops! I dropped the lemon tart (Oops!

Mi è scivolata la crostatina) is the name of Massimo Bottura’s iconic dessert at the three-Michelin star Osteria Francescana in Modena. The dish was created by accident (a member of the staff literally dropped the dish), but it was such a hit that they kept it that way and began serving it with brushes of zabaione sauce and lemon ice cream topped by a broken cookie. It’s a broken (and stunning) dish that gets reconstructed with every mouthful.

At elBulli several years prior, chef Ferran Adrià was already practicing deconstructions and molecular gastronomy. One of his first legendary creations is called Los salmonetes Gaudí (Gaudí red mullets, 1987).

Adrià used the mosaic of fragmented tile for which the Spanish architect Gaudí is known for inspiration. He served the red mullet hot and clean (at the time it was usu-

ally served breaded or wrapped) and put a vegetable mosaic on top.

The design of a dish can be inspired by art or can be art in and of itself. According to chef Mikel Alonso of Ko Ma in Mexico City, “Upon plating we put into place a series of techniques that are registered in color, texture, and flavors which, together, result in a culinary painting. When the plating begins as a blank canvas, we embark upon an artistic journey.”

For Rodolfo Guzmán of Boragó in Santiago, Chile, there are aspects of cooking that can be related to art and, indeed, plating is one of them. “Not only does the food have to be delicious, dazzling you with its ingredients, cooking method, preparation, quality, or countless other aspects. It should also be beautiful, take you somewhere, make you feel something, move you,” he says.

Para comenzar un diseño, en sentido estricto, los cocineros se basan en las técnicas básicas de emplatado. Estas contmplan la composición que va desde los colores, las texturas, la altura, la limpieza, el equilibrio y la armonía para ensamblar todos los ingredientes, hasta la forma, el color y el material del plato que van a utilizar.

Sin embargo, para chefs como Carlos Gaytán, de Tzuco en Chicago, más allá de lo estético, están los valores del contenido.

“Debes visualizarlo desde un principio y pensar cómo llevarlo a un nivel superior, pero lo primero es el ingrediente, segundo es el sabor, tercero es la historia que quieres contar y cómo ejecutarlo para que la gente disfrute el alma del platillo”, asegura.

No hay una fórmula estricta, pero hay una premisa: “crear es no copiar”, como dijo el chef francés, Jacques Maximin; frase que Ferran Adrià convirtió en la base de la revolución gastronómica. Así que el reto de los cocineros es romper con lo cotidiano y comenzar desde cero cada vez, porque el diseño de un plato cambia de un platillo a otro y a veces, de un momento a otro. No hay límites.

Además, cada chef tiene su propio método. Por ejemplo, Mikel Alonso comienza con un preboceto. “Primero, es una proteína a la que se le va a aplicar una técnica, de ser posible audaz o novedosa (o las dos) sin desvirtuar su esencia; la técnica debe estar al servicio del producto. A partir de ahí pensamos en los accesorios de este modelo que estamos vistiendo: colores, texturas, sabores, olores, salivaciones, sorpresas.

Después de corroborar una y otra vez que funciona, viene lo más complicado, el último guiño, la emoción. Sin ella, el plato no tiene sentido”, cuenta.

Por su parte, Jonatán Gómez Luna, de Le Chique en Riviera Maya, afirma que su proceso incluye “desarrollo, técnica, sabor y creatividad”. Él y su equipo examinan una idea con calma, la deshacen, hacen pruebas y “cuando está a la perfección se realiza la receta (la técnica al servicio del gusto), incluido el montaje. Es el momento en que la imagen en la cabeza y la hoja de papel se vuelve realidad y una fotografía plasma toda esta idea y proceso. Nunca colocamos en la mesa algo que no pasó por este procedimiento”.

Creating the Ephemeral Strictly speaking, in order to begin a design, chefs follow basic plating techniques. Such techniques take into account composition in terms of colors, texture, height, balance, and harmony to put together all the ingredients, even the shape, color and material of the plate that they are going to use.

However, for chefs like Carlos Gaytán of Tzuco in Chicago, beyond aesthethics, the content itself has value. “You have to visualize it from the beginning and think about how to take it to the next level. First and foremost is the ingredient; second, the flavor; and third, the story you wish to tell and how you’re going to execute it in order for people to enjoy the essence of the dish,” he states.

There is no hard and fast formula, but a premise: “creating is not copying,” as French chef Jacque Maximin said. Ferran Adrià turned that statement into the basis of a food revolution. The challenge for chefs is to break with the commonplace and start from scratch every single time, so that plate design changes from one dish to the next and, sometimes, from one minute to the next. There are no limits.

Furthermore, each chef has their own method. For example, Mikel Alonso starts with a rough sketch. “First, there’s a protein to which a technique is going to be applied, preferably something bold and novel (or both) without detracting from its essence. The technique should serve the ingredient. From there we think about the accessories to the model we are dressing: colors, textures, flavors, aromas, salivations, surprises. After you’ve corroborated that it works time after time, now comes the tricky part: the final nod, the excitement.

Without it, the dish is devoid of meaning,” he tells.

For his part, Jonatán Gómez Luna of Le Chique in Riviera Maya confirms that his process includes “development, technique, flavor, and creativity.” He and his team calmly examine an idea, taking it apart, running tests, and “when it is just right we make the recipe (technique in service of enjoyment), including assembly. It’s the time when the image in our heads and the one on paper become reality and a photograph conveys the whole idea and process. Nothing is placed on the table without having gone through this process.”

El elemento fundamental para el diseño (y la creación completa) de un platillo es la inspiración y esta puede llegar desde cualquier punto. “Debemos ser sensibles, estar alertas, ver y percibir sabores e ideas, no dejar de sorprendernos por detalles, sabores, técnicas y sencillez, la inspiración está en todos lados, debemos hacer el ejercicio constante de buscarla”, afirma Jonatán.

Rodolfo agrega que esta puede llegar “a partir de un método de cocción, un ingrediente, situación, aroma, color, estación, un paisaje, un producto, de todas las anteriores mezcladas o disueltas. Cuando tu trabajo se basa en la originalidad, vinculando aspectos creativos, abso lutamente todo puede ser un canal de inspiración”.

El ejercicio de Mikel es observar lo que pasa a su alrededor. “Siempre intento encontrar el equilibrio de lo que percibo, descubrir lo sencillo detrás de lo aparentemente complejo. Ver la vida con ojos de niño y caminar ligero. Me encanta pensar en la teoría del caos, en ese sistema dinámico no lineal en donde detrás de un desorden aparente se esconde un orden matemático perfecto. El emplatado que más me gusta, y siento que el más complejo, es el que refiere a esta ciencia”.

Yván Mucharraz, de Comal en Los Cabos, menciona a la naturaleza como fuente de inspiración y asegura que “el montaje siempre está en movimiento, no solo por el tiempo sino porque tiene una evolución. Terminas la obra o plasmas la obra final en un lienzo para que alguien lo disfrute, porque el fin siempre es que el comensal se sorprenda, lo disfrute y que le deje algo, pero siempre la estás perfeccionando. A veces es un proceso que no tiene inicio ni fin”.

Bajo esta idea, un plato puede tardar un año en desarrollarse, o tres, o 10, y otro quedar listo en una semana o un día. La cocina tiene una premisa, según Rodolfo, “obedecer la intuición”. Un plato salado puede convertirse en postre y luego regresar a ser salado, y ser tres platillos diferentes porque es el proceso es multidireccional y multidimensional tanto en el sabor, como en el diseño.

“La oveja negra de la familia es un postre basado en leche de oveja chilota, nos demoramos mucho en sacarlo, tres años en desarrollarlo porque no estábamos contentos. Un día decidí: muchachos, me aburrí, vamos a sacar este postre. Ellos contestaron: pero Rodolfo, no está terminado.

Y dije: ¡me importa un carajo! Lo vamos a sacar igual, todas las cosas tienen su límite, si no es ahora, no saldrá nunca. Para sorpresa de todos tuvo un recibimiento sensacional. Después fue evolucionando tanto, tanto, cambió muchas veces. Ya no está en el menú, pero fue un postre muy lindo que nos dejó muchas enseñanzas y, probablemente, va a dar pie para otras cosas”, cuenta Guzmán.

Diseñar un plato es como darle a un pintor 300 colores. Para un cocinero, un solo ingrediente puede tener 300 posibilidades para combinar, desarrollar y crear, así que permanecerá en evolución de método y forma. El objetivo siempre será que el comensal lo disfrute desde el primer momento y que de la vista pase al amor por el sabor.

Inspiration is fundamental to design (and overall creation) of a dish and can come from anywhere. “We have to be sensitive in order to see and perceive flavors and ideas, and never stop delighting in the details, flavors, techniques, and simplicity. Inspiration is everywhere; we have to be seeking it out constantly,” says Jonatán.

Guzmán adds that this can come from “a cooking method, an ingredient, a situation, an aroma, a color, a season, a landscape, a product, or a combination of all of the above mixed together or distilled into something else. When your work is based on originality connected to creative aspects, absolutely everything can be a channel of inspiration.”

What Alonso does is observe everything around him. “I always try to find the balance between what I perceive and to discover the simplicity behind what seems complex: to see life with the eyes of a child and walk lightly. I love to think about chaos theory, in that nonlinear, dynamic system where perfect mathematical order is hidden behind an apparent disorder. Plating is what I like best and I feel like it’s the most complicated and involves this science.”

Yván Mucharraz of Comal in Los Cabos, mentions nature as a source of inspiration and says that “mounting is always in movement, not only due to the time but because there’s an evolution. You express the final artwork on a canvas so that someone can enjoy it, because the aim is always to surprise the diner, for them to enjoy it and to take away a lasting impression, but you’re

always perfecting it. Sometimes it’s a process that has no beginning and no end.”

Under this idea, it can take a year, or three, or 10 to develop a dish. Or it can be ready in a week or one day. According to Guzmán, cooking has a premise: “obey intuition.” A savory dish can become a dessert and then go back to being savory, and it can be three different dishes because the process is multi-directional and multi-dimensional both in its flavor and design.

“La oveja negra de la familia (the black sheep of the family) is a Chilota goat-milk dessert that we spent a long time to put out, taking three years to develop it because we weren’t happy with it. One day I made a decision: ‘Guys, I’m over this,’ I said, ‘Let’s get this dessert on the menu.’ To which they replied, ‘But Rodolfo, it’s not finished.’ And I said, ‘I don’t give a darn! We’re going to put it out there anyway. Everything has its limit.

If it’s not now; it’s never.’ It was a sensation, to everyone’s amazement. Later it evolved, so very much that it changed many, many times. It’s not on the menu anymore, but it was a very nice dessert that provided us with many lessons learned and will probably lead to new things,” says Guzmán.

Designing a dish is like giving a painter 300 colors. For a chef, a single ingredient represents 300 possibilities for combining, developing, and creating. It’s a guarantee that the method and form will keep evolving. The aim will always be for the diner to enjoy it from the first instant and for their love at first sight to become love at first bite.

A la Bauhaus se le atribuyen los nacimientos del diseño gráfico y el industrial, pero si esta sentencia llegara a resultar exagerada, no se podrá negar que, desde hace cien años, todo lo que tenga que ver con el equilibrio de lo funcional y lo estético tiene su base en esta escuela alemana.

Su historia no solo es de modernidad y arte, sino de resistencia. El 12 de abril de 1919, Walter Gropius la fundó para cubrir las necesidades de los alemanes que salían de la Primera Guerra Mundial. En su nombre, compuesto de las palabras germanas bau, referente a construcción, y haus, casa, se cargaba la ideología de su creador: reducir la formas.

A esta idea se ciñeron las disciplinas de arquitectura, pintura, escultura, metalurgia, alfarería, ebanistería, tejido, vidrio, encuadernación e impresión, entre tantas otras. Entre sus defensores figuraron profesores como Marcel Breuer, Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee y directores como el mismo Gropius, Hannes Meyer y Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, quien enunció “menos es más”.

Se fundó en Weimar, Alemania, y para 1925 se trasladó a Dessau. La UNESCO declaró las obras arquitectónicas de la Bauhaus en estas ciudades Patrimonio de la Humanidad en 1996. Pero antes pasó por una adversidad “funcional”: a la par que sus puertas cerraron durante el Nacional Socialismo, el movimiento se expandió a todo el mundo. Cuando los nazis tomaron el gobierno, clausuraron la escuela al considerarla en la categoría de arte degenerado por sus tintes democráticos. Pero el exilio de los profesores a Estados Unidos derivó en un regalo en forma de conocimiento artístico para el mundo.

Bauhaus is credited with the birth of graphic and industrial design. If that sounds like an overstatement, we can’t deny that, for the past hundred years, everything that has to do with the balance between function and aesthetics has its roots in this German school.

Its history is not only one of modernity and art, but also resistance. On April 12, 1919, Walter Gropius founded the school in order to meet the needs of Germans coming home from World War I. Its name, comprised of the German words bau, referring to construction, and haus (house), was loaded with its creator’s ideology: the reduction of forms.

This idea was applied to the disciplines of architecture, painting, sculpture, metallurgy, pottery, cabinetry, weaving, glass, book binding, printing, and more.

Professors such as Marcel Breuer, Vassily Kandinsky, and Paul Klee, and directors including Gropius himself, Hannes Meyer, and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, who declared “less is more,” all defended it.

Founded in Weimar, Germany, the school moved to Dessau in 1925. The architectural works of the Bauhaus school in these cities would be declared UNESCO World Heritage sites in 1996. But previously it would undergo a “functional” hardship: while its doors would shut during National Socialism, the movement would expand to the whole world. When the Nazis took control of the government, they closed the school, considering it degenerate art due to its democratic leanings. But the exile of the professors to the United States resulted in a gift in the form of artistic knowledge for the world.

La imagen de "Rosie the Riveter" es de fuerza y determinación que desde la década de los 80 se ha convertido en símbolo feminista, de lucha por la paridad y no violencia de género, y del trabajo de las mujeres. “¡Podemos hacerlo!”, dice el cartel. Pero la historia de ese póster es más lejana y, aunque algo tiene de eso, en realidad J. Howard Miller lo creó en 1943 con la intención de animar a las mujeres a relevar en las fábricas a los hombres que habían viajado al frente de la Segunda Guerra Mundial.

Pasarían 40 años para que ellas reivindicaran y se apropiaran del afiche.

Entonces, todas querían ser esa mujer que en la imagen aparecía con un traje azul y paliacate rojo con puntos blancos. Incluso algunas como Geraldine Hoff Doyle, trabajadora de una fábrica metalúrgica en 1942, se atribuyeron la identidad. Pero en 2016, luego de seis años de investigaciones, el académico James J. Kimble encontró que la verdadera identidad de la mujer que inspiró el cartel era la de Naomi Parker Fraley, una camarera de California quien, a los 20 años y tras el ataque a Pearl Harbor, se fue a trabajar a la estación Naval Aérea de Alameda.

La foto que daría fe de la identidad de la mujer se encontró en un comercio de antigüedades. Naomi Parker Fraley murió a los 96 años en enero de 2018, pero su imagen seguirá dando fuerza a las mujeres.

Fist held up at face height and bicep tense and well defined, “Rosie the Riveter” is an image of strength and determination that has been a symbol of feminism, the struggle for equality, non-violence against women, and women’s work since the 1980s. “We Can Do It!” exclaims the poster. But the history of that poster goes back further than that and, although it refers to some of those concepts, it was actually created by J. Howard Miller in 1943 with the intention of motivating women who relieved men in the factory who had been sent to the frontlines of World War II. 40 years would pass before women would claim and take ownership of the image. Then, every girl wanted to be that woman who in the image appeared with a blue jumpsuit and red handkerchief with white polka dots. Some even attributed her identity to 1942 metal factory worker Geraldine Hoff Doyle. But in 2016, after six years of research, academic James J. Kimble discovered the true identity of the woman who had inspired the poster: Naomi Parker Fraley, a California waitress who, at the age of 20 and after the Pearl Harbor attack, went to work at the Naval Air Station Alameda. The photo that would prove her identity was found in an antiques shop. Naomi Parker Fraley died at the age of 96 in January 2018. Nevertheless, her image continues to give women strength.

es un dibujo Se puede estar solo en un país completamente desconocido, sin hablar el idioma y aun así, evitar algún peligro, encontrar un punto, no perderse. ¿Cómo se puede saber dónde hay un hospital, un estadio o un aeropuerto cuando uno no puede comunicarse? A través de los pictogramas, esas formas geométricas, diseños, lenguaje visual que es, en su mayoría, universal.

El metro de la Ciudad de México es uno de los mejores ejemplos sobre cómo una imagen puede indicar un punto exacto sin una sola palabra.

En 1967, cuando se creó el sistema de transporte, arquitectos, fotógrafos y diseñadores como el estadounidense Lance Wyman concibieron un sistema de señalización interior con referencia inmediata a los lugares históricos, barrios o personajes cercanos a cada estación. El mismo diseñador que dio identidad a los Juegos Olímpicos de México 68 diseñó, por ejemplo, la imagen del acueducto de Sevilla o el huacal con manzanas para el mercado de la Merced.

Si alguna lección deja el Metro en la Ciudad de México o símbolos internacionales como la cruz de los hospitales o el avión de los aeropuertos es que los iconos son más efectivos cuando los entienden más personas. Por eso, y porque la imagen es un ente vivo, Japón añadió 15 pictogramas como el de wifi y cambió siete diseños para facilitar el entendimiento de los turistas en los próximos Juegos Olímpicos, reprogramados para 2021. Visto en colores y formas, es más claro: todos somos parte de un mismo mundo, en el que el idioma más comprendido es el de las imágenes.

It’s possible to be in a completely unfamiliar country, not knowing the language and still be able to stay out of danger, find a destination, and not get lost. How can you find out where there is a hospital, stadium, or airport if you’re unable to communicate? Through pictograms, geometric shapes, designs –visual language that is, for the most part, universal.

The Mexico City metro is one of the best examples of how, without a single word, an image can indicate an exact spot. In 1967, when the mass transit system was created, architects, photographers, and designers such as Lance Wyman of the United States, created an internal signaling system with immediate reference to historic sites, neighborhoods, or figures near each station. The same designer who gave an identity to the ’68 Mexico Olympic Games created, for example, the image of the aqueduct of Sevilla station and the crate of apples for La Merced market.

If the Mexico City metro or international symbols such as the cross for hospitals or the airplane for airports have taught us anything, it’s that the more people understand an icon the more effective it is. That, and because an image is a living entity, is why Japan added 15 pictograms like the one for Wi-Fi and changed seven designs in order to make it easier for tourists at the next Olympic Games –rescheduled for 2021– to understand. It’s clearer when presented in colors and shapes: we’re all part of the same world in which the most understood language is that of images.

A finales de los 70, Javier Mariscal reinventó la imagen de Barcelona con un afiche cuya simpleza y sutileza resultaban poéticas. Simplemente dividió el nombre de la ciudad en sílabas y dibujó sobre ellas, haciendo notoria una obviedad pasada de largo. Bar-Cel-Ona correspondía a las palabras catalanas “bar”, “cielo” y “ola”, tres cosas que identifican a la ciudad.

Reconocido como uno de los diseñadores españoles más importantes de su generación, muchos creen que si a Barcelona se le considera capital del diseño, se debe a él, a ese póster, a sus múltiples ilustraciones de ramblas y parques, y en parte a Cobi, el perro que ideó como mascota de los Juegos Olímpicos de 1992 en esa ciudad. "Todo el mundo ama a Cobi porque representa un momento muy feliz. Fue un momento mágico porque todos intentaban hacer muchas cosas positivas. Fue una pirámide de energía positiva", recordó Mariscal.

El estilo del artista y diseñador reconoce historietas, tipografía, arquitectura, diseño gráfico e industrial, cerámica y hasta cinematografía, pero eso pasó hasta que el término “multidisciplina” empezó a pronunciarse. Los dibujantes de historietas lo consideraban pintor, y los pintores decían que no entendía el “arte con mayúsculas”. “No se me entendía muy bien, que yo, al no ser arquitecto, me metiera en trabajo de arquitectura e interiorismo de bares, oficinas, restaurantes. O que me pusiera a hacer muebles cuando era dibujante de cómics o que hiciera cómics como si hiciera pinturas”, recuerda el valenciano en entrevista desde su estudio en medio de bares, cielo y olas.

In the late 1970s, Javier Mariscal would reinvent Barcelona’s image with a poster whose simplicity was so subtle it was poetic. He simply divided the city’s name into syllables and colored them in, making evident something that was in front of everyone’s faces the whole time. Bar-Cel-Ona corresponds to the Catalonian words “Bar,” “Sky,” and “Wave,” three things that define the city.

Recognized as one of the most important Spanish designers of his generation, many believe that if Barcelona is considered a capital of design, it’s because of him, that poster, his multiple drawings of boulevards and parks, and in part to Cobi, the dog he came up with as mascot when the city hosted the 1992 Olympic Games. “Everybody loves Cobi because he represents a very happy time. It was a magical time because we were all trying to do lots of positive things. It was a pyramid of positive energy,” Mariscal would later recall.

The artist and designer’s style admits comics, fonts, architecture, graphic and industrial design, ceramics, and even cinematography. But this was when the term “multidisciplinary” was only just becoming a buzz word. Comic strip artists considered him a painter; painters said that he didn’t understand “Art with a capital ‘A’.” “It wasn’t very well understood how I, who wasn’t an architect, could get involved in the architecture or interior design of bars, offices, and restaurants. Or how I could make furniture if I was a comic strip illustrator or that I would make comics like they were paintings,” recalls the Valencia native in an interview from his studio in the middle of bars, sky, and waves.

¿Un hombre de raza negra en franca campaña para convertirse en el 44º presidente de los Estados Unidos de América? Para algunos, esto no tenía sentido; para Shepard Fairey, todo lo contrario y además, era un reto. "Había gente que creía que Obama no tenía altura presidencial, y yo sabía cómo contrarrestarlo visualmente. Era un outsider, pese a ser senador, alguien que podría parecer al estadounidense común poco presidencial", dijo Fairey al diario español El País.

El artista visual, más conocido por su trabajo urbano –grafiti, muralismo y esténcil– como OBEY, atacó la psicología colectiva con marketing de guerrilla: 300,000 calcomanías y pósters del candidato en azul, blanco y rojo. Dicen los sociólogos que si los motivos políticos y sociales le dieron la presidencia a Obama, tampoco debe olvidarse el manejo de su imagen en la calle.

Uno de los afiches, el más representativo, es aquel en que se ve el rostro de Barack Obama, con guiños al Che Guevara retratado por Alberto Korda, y abajo una sola palabra que lo decía todo: Hope. El cartel, con evidente influencia constructivista, fue una intervención que el artista hizo a una fotografía de Associated Press. Actualmente cuelga en la colección permanente de la National Portrait Gallery del Museo Smithsoniano de Washington D.C. como recordatorio histórico: el 20 de enero de 2009, por primera vez en Estados Unidos, un afrodescendiente era presidente de esa nación.

A black man in an honest campaign to become the 44th president of the United States? For some, it made no sense: for Shepard Fairey, it made complete sense. What’s more, it was a challenge. “There were people who believed that Obama didn’t have the makings of a president, and I knew how to counteract that sentiment visually. He was an outsider, just a senator, someone who might appear to your everyday American as less than presidential,” Fairey would later tell the Spanish newspaper El País.

Better known for his street art –graffiti, murals, and stencils like “OBEY”–, the visual artist attacked the collective psychology with guerrilla marketing: 300,000 stickers and posters featuring the candidate in red, white, and blue.

Sociologists say that if the political and social factors handed Obama the presidency, you can’t ignore the streetwise handling of his image.

One of the posters, the most representative, is the one in which we see Barack Obama, with hints at Che Guevara as portrayed by Alberto Korda, and below a single word that said it all: Hope. The poster, with clear constructivist influence, was an intervention that the artist performed on an Associated Press photograph. It currently hangs in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian Museum’s National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C., as a historic reminder: on January 20, 2009, for the first time in U.S. history, an African-American became president of that nation.

A single word is enough for Frida Escobedo to

define herself: architect. That description speaks both to her profession as to the particular way she has of seeing the world. “The architect is always seeing social dynamics and relationships through space,” she asserts. “Architecture is a filter through which we see reality, and a very personal form of expression.”

Frida came to architecture almost by accident.

She chose the major without having a clear idea of what she wanted to do, but it just took a week of classes for her to realize she had made the right decision. After seven years working, and after having founded her first firm, Perro Rojo, and later, the architectural workshop Frida Escobedo, she began to question the true significance of space and the role of architecture in it. “I was weighed down by the idea of architecture as only a service for business when I knew and felt that the conception of space had much more to communicate,” she recalls. So, she headed to Harvard University to get her Master’s degree in Art, Design, and the Public Domain.

Two months before she temporarily moved to Boston, Frida created a temporary installation at Mexico City’s Museo del Eco. Using nothing but stacked concrete blocks, the installation completely transformed the museum’s courtyard, evoking different scenes according to each person’s imagination: some saw an auditorium, others, arche-

Hay una sola palabra que basta para que Frida Escobedo se autodefina: arquitecta. Con esa descripción habla tanto de su profesión como de la forma particular en la que ve el mundo. “El arquitecto ve todo el tiempo, a través del espacio, las dinámicas sociales y las relaciones”, asegura. “La arquitectura es un filtro a través del cual vemos la realidad, y una forma de expresión muy personal”.

Frida llegó a la arquitectura casi por accidente.

Eligió la carrera sin tener muy claro qué quería hacer, y le bastó una semana de clases para confirmar que había tomado la decisión correcta. Después de siete años trabajando –y tras haber fundado su primer despacho, Perro Rojo, y más tarde, el taller de arquitectura Frida Escobedo– empezó a cuestionarse el verdadero significado del espacio, y el papel de la arquitectura dentro de este.

“Me abrumaba que la arquitectura se viera solo como un servicio para un negocio cuando sabía y sentía que la concepción del espacio tenía mucho más que comunicar”, recuerda. Entonces, encontró la maestría en Arte, Diseño y Espacio Público de Harvard.

Dos meses antes de mudarse provisionalmente a Boston, Frida creó una instalación temporal en el Museo del Eco, en la Ciudad de México. Utilizando AIR E MAYO 2020

solo blocks de concreto apilados, el proyecto transformó por completo el patio del museo, evocando distintos escenarios, según la imaginación de cada persona: algunos vieron un auditorio, otros una ruina arqueológica. “Le tengo un cariño especial a ese pabellón porque ahí confirmé que podía expresar otras cosas que tienen que ver con el espacio, pero que no son necesariamente arquitectura”, dice refiriéndose, entre otras cosas, a la capacidad de expresar una idea a través de superficies. “Fue una primera pregunta. El proyecto tuvo que ver más con lo que yo venía pensando que con lo que me estaban enseñando. Fue un buen puente entre el pensar y el hacer”.

Meses después, ya en Harvard, conoció a la profesora Giuliana Bruno. “Para ella, el mensaje de la arquitectura está en la superficie: el espacio se concibe como una serie de superficies que nosotros entendemos desde las nuestras: los ojos y la piel”. En ese sentido, la arquitectura es un lenguaje visual. “Es una forma de entender y traducir la realidad; de asimilar, metabolizar, transformar y crear, que es lo más importante”, concluye.

Por medio de la práctica y la teoría, Frida descubrió los dos ejes de su profesión: la funcionalidad y el diálogo a través de la estética. “Esta dualidad es algo inherente a la arquitectura. Es la naturaleza del oficio”. Desde su regreso a México en 2012, 080

The project had more to do with what I was thinking about than with what I was being taught. It was a good bridge between thought and action.”

Months later, while at Harvard, she met Professor Giuliana Bruno. “For her, the message of architecture is in the surface: space is conceived of as a series of surfaces that we understand from our own surfaces: our eyes and skin.” In that regard, architecture is a visual language. “It’s a way of understanding and translating to reality, of assimilating, metabolizing, transforming, and creating, which is what’s most important,” she concludes.

Through practice and theory, Frida discovered the two central tenets of her profession: functionality and dialogue through aesthetics. “This duality is something inherent to architecture. It’s the nature of the trade.” Since returning to Mexico in 2012, she has sought out different projects that align with her philosophy.

Uno de estos es Mar Tirreno, una vivienda plurifamiliar de nueve casas-patios con distintos grados de privacidad gracias al juego de ángulos y alturas. “Todos los involucrados prestaron atención al discurso presente en las formas y el material”, recuerda. “El proyecto moduló los intereses del desarrollador y lo que nos parecía importante a nosotros –ofrecer espacios abiertos, con intimidad y luz natural–, y el resultado es un edificio que generará más valor a lo largo del tiempo”.

Hoy, el lenguaje de la arquitectura está evolucionando en forma y fondo. “Hemos dejado atrás las formas innovadoras y experimentales para preguntarnos ¿y si reciclamos?, ¿y si dejamos de construir y empezamos a planear?”, reflexiona. “El mensaje está evolucionando como consecuencia de lo que los arquitectos queremos decir y lo que el mundo quiere recibir: hoy tenemos otro tipo de preocupaciones que apuntan a la conservación ambiental y la equidad social. Quizás esta nueva expresión será menos llamativa, menos de autor y más colaborativa, pero será más real”.

Mar Tirreno is one of those. It’s a multi-family housing project in Mexico City with nine houses/ courtyards with different degrees of privacy due to the play of angles and height. “Everyone involved in the planning and construction paid close attention to the discourse present in the different forms and materials,” she recalls. “The project modulated the developer’s interests and what was important to us which was offering open, yet intimate, naturally lit spaces. The result is a building that will increase in value over the long term.”

Today, the language of architecture is evolving in form and substance. “We’ve left behind the new, innovative and experimental forms in order to ask ourselves, “And what if we do less? What if we recycle? What if we stop building so much and start planning instead?” she reflects. “The message is evolving as a consequence of what the architects want to say and what the world wants to receive: today we have another set of concerns more related to environmental preservation and social equity. Perhaps this new expression will be less sensational, less personality-driven and more collaborative, but it will be more real.”

n medio de la selva de Quintana Roo se asoma una laguna serpenteante que ofrece uno de los escenarios naturales más sorprendentes del país: sus aguas muestran siete tonalidades de azul, desde el turquesa hasta el marino más profundo.

Ahora lo ideal es quedarse en casa y mientras tanto podemos pensar cuál será el destino que visitaremos cuando tengamos oportunidad. Y Bacalar es un lugar para reconectar con la naturaleza, que hoy tenemos tan lejos, para descansar y sanar.

Bacalar no goza de la misma popularidad que las ciudades puerto vecinas. Ni debería. Y es que su encanto está en el silencio, en la sensación de que el tiempo pasa más lento y en su naturaleza tan frágil que nos demanda tratarla con cuidado.

La primera postal de Bacalar la ofrece la laguna de los siete colores. La diversidad de tonos en sus aguas se debe a la diferencia de profundidades y la intensidad de los rayos de sol. Las formaciones de apariencia rocosa que resaltan entre los siete azules son estromatolitos, considerados los organismos vivos más antiguos del planeta –se cree que estos tienen entre 7,000 y 10,000 años de antigüe086

In the middle of Quintana Roo’s jungle there’s a meandering lake providing one of the most stunning natural settings in Mexico: the water’s seven shades of blue go from turquoise to the deepest shade of navy blue. While for now it’s better to stay at home, there’s nothing to keep us from thinking about what destinations we’ll visit when we have the chance. Bacalar is a place to get in touch with nature, which these days is so removed, in order to rest and heal.

Bacalar doesn’t enjoy the same popularity as the nearby port cities –and it’s just as well. Its charm lays in the silence, in the sense of the slow passage of time, and the sensitive natural setting that obliges us to treat it carefully.

The primary image of Bacalar is the seven-colored lake. The variety of hues of its water is caused by the different depths and the intense rays of the sun. The rock-like formations that stand out among the seven shades of blue are stromatolites. Estimated to be between 7,000 and 10,000 years old, these formations are believed to be the oldest living organisms on the

dad. Al sur de la laguna, enmarcados por distintos núcleos de manglares, están los cenotes la Bruja, Esmeralda y Cocalitos. Y a un costado del agua, el cenote Azul, que alcanza una profundidad de 90 metros y está rodeado de cavernas sumergidas.

A la orilla del agua, y en el Pueblo Mágico que se extiende por el oeste de la laguna, pequeñas palapas y casitas construidas con materiales naturales albergan hoteles y restaurantes que, cada vez más, se preocupan por la sostenibilidad y el bienestar integral. Uno de estos es Nixtamal, cuyo menú temporal inspirado en la cocina prehispánica se basa en la pesca responsable y los ingredientes orgánicos cosechados en la península.

También destaca Akalki, una propiedad modular con 11 habitaciones repartidas en la costa y en medio de la selva que utiliza energía solar. Suspendido sobre la laguna, su Centro de Sanación ofrece distintos tratamientos corporales y faciales, y una serie de terapias holísticas: Aguahara, una sesión de estiramientos dentro del agua seguida de una meditación suspendida, y el Ritual de los dioses, con un envolvente de hierbas medicinales para 088

On the shore of the lake in the Magical Town of the same name that stretches along the west side of the lake, small huts and cottages made from natural materials house hotels and restaurants increasingly concerned with sustainability and holistic wellness. One such restaurant is Nixtamal, with a rotating menu inspired by pre-Hispanic cooking based on responsible fishing and organic, regional ingredients.

There’s also Akalki, a modular hotel with 11 solar-powered rooms dotting the coast and in midst of the jungle. EL VIAJERO IMPACIENTE THE RESTLESS TRAVELER “Ya terminé de estar…”, sugiere uno con diplomática ironía cuando siente el impulso de gritar que ya tuvo bastante –o sea, demasiado– de una cierta visita y teme que está a unos pocos instantes de salir disparado en cualquier dirección. Puesto en otras palabras: ¡Sáquenme de aquí!

No siempre conseguimos escapar del edén antes de que se vuelva purgatorio. Ocurre en ocasiones que pasan las semanas y seguimos estando precisamente ahí donde dijimos que habíamos acabado de estar. Los días se hacen huecos, una vez que perdemos el rango de turistas y la vida se encierra en un raro paréntesis donde el único punto de interés parece ser la terminal aérea.

Una cosa, no obstante, es que la vida en cierto sentido se interrumpa, y otra sería que se terminara. Roto el hechizo de los primeros días, quien llegó de visita a la ciudad soñada empieza a ver un poco más allá del turibús, hasta que cualquier tarde nebulosa experimenta la desubicación del forastero. Ha llegado muy tarde a la película para esperar que le den un papel.

Desarrolla por tanto una relación íntima con el lugar, y en un descuido se enamora de sus calles con ese fervor cándido y en momentos atónito que los locales nunca probarán.

Ciertamente he caído en lugares agrestes a los que ni por buena paga volvería, como aquel pueblo a orillas del Amazonas del que llegué a estar cerca de salir con la cabeza a modo de llavero (cuando menos en mi imaginación, tostada por dos meses de sol ecuatorial). Lo cual no significa que incluso las ciudades más hermosas, magnéticas o amables carezcan de mil rostros antipáticos y vayan a esconderlos para siempre.

“I’m done,” one suggests with diplomatic irony, feeling the urge to scream upon having had quite enough –that is, too much– of a certain visit and fearing they’re just moments away from taking off in any direction. In other words: “Get me out of here!”.

We don’t always manage to escape Eden before it turns into purgatory. It happens on occasions when the weeks go by and we’re still precisely where we said we were done being. The days become empty, once we lose our tourist status and life closes in around us in a strange parenthesis where the only point of interest seems to be the airport.

Nevertheless, an interruption of one’s life is one thing, while it would be something entirely different for it to end altogether.

Once the spell of the first days has been broken, the person who came to visit a fantastic city starts to see a little more beyond the tourist routes until, on an overcast afternoon, the outsider starts to feel just how out-of-place they are. They’ve shown up too late in the movie to expect to be given a part to play. In consequence, they develop an intimate relationship with the place and before they know it they’ve fallen in love with the city’s streets with a candid and sometimes astonishing fervor that locals will never know.

I know I’ve landed in some pretty rough places that you couldn’t pay me to go back to, like that little town on the edge of the Amazon where at point it appeared the only way I would make it out of there was with my shrunken head on a key chain (so it seemed to me, at least, after two months under the equatorial sun). That’s not to say that even the most beautiful, magnetic, or friendliest cities aren’t home to thousands of nasty

Difícilmente se apasiona uno por aquello que no le hará sufrir, y las ciudades no son la excepción. ¿Cómo voy a decir que Nueva York tiene un sitio especial en mis entrañas, si nunca me ha llevado el diablo ahí?

Uno “acabó de estar” en un lugar cuando no halla su zona de confort. Y si a pesar de todo ha de seguir ahí, tendrá que hacerse al clima y sus penurias, así sea por seguir descubriendo en qué clase de tierras vino a naufragar. Por eso sé que adoro Río de Janeiro con un conocimiento de causa equivalente al que me lleva a todavía hoy a maldecir la memoria de Baton Rouge, Louisiana, donde acabé de estar en 10 minutos y pasé un mes y medio bostezando. ¿Pero qué tal si hubiera caído enamorado de una lugareña? ¿Habría entonces osado terminar ya no digamos de estar por ahí, sino siquiera de cerrar la boca?

Desde la perspectiva de la almohada, los viajes de trabajo lucen todavía peores. Termina uno de estar en su destino antes de salir hacia el aeropuerto. Ya en el avión, sigo refunfuñando en nombre del trabajo que he dejado pendiente por tener que viajar. ¿Cómo es que al día siguiente, volando de regreso, celebro haber viajado y lamento tener que regresar? Supongo que esas son las consecuencias de abandonar la zona de confort y darte el lujo de estar donde estás (cosa muy complicada en estos tiempos, habiendo tanta gente que ni dormida acaba de estar en su teléfono).

Una enorme ventaja de “terminar de estar” en París, por ejemplo, es que queda la opción de sumergir tu tedio mercurial en un sueño profundo y al día siguiente despertar nada menos que en París. No veo, francamente, razón para llorar. A menos, eso sí, que el pesimista insista en confundir el boulevard Haussmann con un pueblo fantasma. ¿Quién no sabe lo que es viajar acompañado de personas que “terminan de estar” en los lugares una eternidad antes o después que uno? ¿Y no es la coincidencia de los hartazgos una dichosa seña de identidad?

Sea cual sea el caso, es demasiado el peso de la impaciencia para llevarlo dentro del equipaje. ¿Y no es de paso por librarnos de ella que decidimos irnos de vacaciones?

That’s why I adore Rio de Janeiro for the same reasons that cause me to curse the memory of Baton Rouge –with which I was done after 10 minutes, only to spend the next six weeks in one continuous yawn. But how about if I had fallen in love with some local girl?

Would I have dared not to call it quits let alone shut my mouth on the topic all together?

From the perspective of one’s own bed the night before, business trips are that much worse. One is done with a place before they’ve even left for the airport. Once I’m on the plane, I’m still grumbling about the work I’ve had to put on hold in order to make the trip. How is it that the next day, on the flight back home, I’m congratulating myself on having made the trip and regretting having to go back? I suppose such things are the result of leaving one’s comfort zone and allowing yourself the luxury to be where you are (easier said than done in these times, when there are people who don’t let go of their phone even when they sleep).

One huge advantage of “being done” with Paris, for example, is that you have the option of riding your mercurial boredom into a deep slumber only to wake up the next day in Paris no less. Frankly, I don’t see anything to cry about. Except, of course, for the pessimist who insists on mistaking Haussmann Boulevard for a ghost town. Who hasn’t had the joy of traveling with someone who is “done” with a place eons before or after you are? Is it not a happy sign of compatibility when two people are sick of a place at the same time? Whatever the case may be, restlessness weighs too much to be lugging it around in your suitcase. And isn’t that exactly what we’re hoping to rid ourselves of when we decide to go on vacation?

SOLO PARA OCASIONES ESPECIALES Just for special occasions Toda mi vida he sido muy cuidadosa con mis cosas. Cuando era chiquita, a mi mamá le causaba mucha gracia ver cómo me tardaba horas en guardar mis juguetes cuando terminaba de jugar con ellos. Unos años después, en la época de oro de las fiestas de 15 años, era tan cuidadosa con mi ropa, que no quería usar mis blusas favoritas –cómo olvidar la época de las blusas llenas de holanes y listones– si el evento no lo ameritaba.

Con el paso del tiempo, he logrado relajarme y cambiar un poco este comportamiento. Sigo siendo la más cuidadosa y ordenada –si vieran mi clóset, sabrían de qué hablo–, pero he aprendido que no vale la pena guardar tantas cosas para ocasiones especiales. Aunque tengo que admitir que hay una categoría en la que me ha costado más trabajo: el alcohol.

No es que esté yo en posesión de una colección millonaria de botellas, pero mis buenos años me ha costado armarla.

Entre mi propia inversión de tiempo y dinero, y regalos que generosamente han llegado a mí, he logrado armar una bodeguita muy digna a la que le tengo mucho cariño. Y aunque siempre soy la primera en decir que lo mejor de las bebidas es compartirlas, la verdad es que no siempre ha sido fácil.

Alguna vez llevé un whisky delicioso a una comida, solo para ver cómo uno de los asistentes se lo servía con Coca (My eyes!, My eyes!). En otra ocasión, llevé mi tequila favorito a casa de un joven con el que estaba saliendo, solo para enterarme, un par de semanas después, de que él ya salía con alguien más. Ya teniendo esa información, creo que me dolió más perder el tequila que perderlo a él. ¿Ven por qué cuido tanto mis botellas?

My whole life I’ve taken special care of my things. When I was little, my mom found it very funny how I would spend hours putting away my toys when I was done playing with them.

Years later, during the golden age of sweet sixteen parties, I took such great care of my clothes that I didn’t want to use my favorite blouses –how could one forget the era of “going out tops”, full of frills and ribbons– if the event wasn’t worth it. With the passage of time, I’ve managed to relax and change that behavior a bit. I’m still the neatest, most careful person you’ll meet (if you saw my closet, you’d know what I’m talking about), but I’ve learned that it’s not worth it to save so many things for special occasions. Though I have to admit there is still one area where that hasn’t been easy: alcohol.

It’s not like I’ve a got a million-dollar collection of bottles, but I’ve gone through great pains over the years to put it together.

With my own investment of time and money and generous gifts, I’ve managed to put together a small, yet lovely cellar of which I am very fond. And though I’m always the first to say that the best thing about drinks is sharing them, the truth is that it hasn’t always been easy for me. Once I took a delicious whiskey to a party, only to watch some guy mix it with coke (My eyes! My eyes!). On another occasion, I took my favorite tequila to the house of guy I was going out with, only to learn a few weeks later that he was already seeing someone else. Having that information, I think it hurt more to lose the tequila than to lose him. Do you see now why I’m so careful with my bottles?

But I have to accept that the success stories far outweigh the failures: sharing a delicious sake with my siblings, a Sambuca

Pero debo de aceptar que los casos de éxito han sido muchos más: compartir un sake con mis hermanos, un Sambuca con mi abuela. Pero nunca lo he comprobado más que en estos días de cuarentena. Mientras escribo este texto, llevo ya un par de semanas en mi casa, y todo indica que faltan cuatro más. Poder trabajar desde nuestras casas para cuidar nuestra salud y la de la gente que nos rodea es un privilegio enorme, pero aun así, no todos los días son fáciles. Hay momentos en los que extraño muchísimo a mi familia y a mis amigos; salir a bares y restaurantes; hasta ir al súper o la farmacia. Pero también hay ratos que disfruto mucho, como preparar cocteles en casa.

En estos días, he descubierto que para abrir una botella y tomarse algo rico, no se necesita mayor excusa que querer disfrutar un momento, incluso si por ahora la persona con la que se brinda está del otro lado de una pantalla. La vida es demasiado corta para estar guardando todo para ocasiones especiales. Claro que hay vestidos que solo se usan para bodas, o relojes heredados del abuelo que se guardan bajo llave, y si alguno de ustedes es poseedor de una de esas botellas de Macallan de los 50, les ruego que no la abran con alguien que no la va a valorar tanto como ustedes. Pero bueno, un poco de sentido común y ya está.

Los únicos que podemos decidir qué hace que una ocasión sea especial somos nosotros, así que ya saben. Descorchen el champagne. Abran el mezcal. Preparen la margarita. La vida es hoy. with my grandma… But I’ve never seen it more so than in these days of quarantine. As I write this, I’ve already been at home for a couple of weeks and everything seems to indicate that there are yet four more to come. Being able to work from our homes to take care of our health and that of the people that surround us is an enormous privilege, but even so, some days are harder than others.

There are times when I desperately miss my family and friends, going out to bars and restaurants, even going to the supermarket or the pharmacy. But there are also times I enjoy a ton, like when I make cocktails at home.

In these days, I’ve discovered that in order to open a bottle and drink something delicious, the only excuse you need is the desire to enjoy a moment, even if, for now, the person you’re toasting with is on the other side of screen. Life is too short to save everything for special occasions. Naturally, there are dresses that are only for weddings, and grandpa’s heirloom watch that you keep under lock and key, and if you happen to be in possession of one of the bottles of Macallan from the fifties, I beg you only to open it with someone who is going to appreciate it as much as you will. Just a little common sense and there you have it. The only one who can decide what makes an occasion special is you. So now you know, uncork that champagne, open that mezcal, make a margarita. Life is now.

DOCUMENTAR EL VIAJE Tres momentos definen una travesía: el antes, cuando ocurre la planeación; el durante, que es el gozo de la experiencia, y el después, en donde se reflexiona sobre lo vivido. Para que nada de esto se olvide, Aniko Villalba publicó el libro Mapa subjetivo de viaje, ilustrado por María Luque.

“Es un diario para que completen los lectores. Lo único que hago acá es proponer ideas para observar”, explica Aniko en entrevista.

La autora argentina, quien dedicó más de 10 años a viajar por todo el mundo, pensó en tareas que los viajeros pueden completar y plasmar en estas páginas. Armar una ruta en un mapa imaginario, sentarse en un espacio público para ver qué pasa y anotar memorias son algunas de las actividades.

“Los invito a pegar estampas, sellos, papeles, a intervenir este diario y hacerlo único”, dice la escritora.

pens; during, which is when the enjoyment of the experience takes place, and after, where you reflect on the experience.

In order to remember it all, Aniko Villalba has launched Mapa Subjetivo de Viaje (Subjective Travel Map), illustrated by María Luque.

“It’s a diary that readers complete. The only thing I do is suggest ideas to observe,” explains Villalba.

The Argentinian author, who spent over 10 years traveling around the world, thought about tasks that travelers can complete and records on these pages. Putting together an imaginary map, sitting in a public space to see what happens, and making notes of memories are just a few of the activities.

“Readers are encouraged to stick stamps, stickers, scraps, and to take part in this diary and make it unique,” says the writer.

On Colima street in Mexico City’s Roma neighborhood, the wooden features of a shop hidden behind a bamboo wall on the opposite edge of the walkway stand out.

Inside, a small checked bar invites diners to have an intimate experience with chefs Hiroshi Kawahito and Samurai: there, before your eyes, they prepare dishes to be enjoyed on the spot for maximum texture and flavour. The menu is small and the idea is to order one dish at a time or choose one of the six pre-set menus. Durante las obras, varios vuelos domésticos se atenderán en posiciones remotas, por lo que los pasajeros serán transportados en autobuses para abordar su vuelo. • Llegar a la terminal al menos dos horas y media antes del vuelo.

In order to streamline boarding and deplaning at Mexico City International Airport’s (AICM) T2, a new corridor is being built at Gate 75. During works, some domestic flights will be operated from remote positions, and passengers will be transported by bus in order to board their flight. Please keep in mind the following recommendations so that you may continue to enjoy your travel experience: • Check in using aeromexico.com, our mobile app, or airport kiosks.

• Arrive at the terminal no less than two and a half hours before your flight.

• Go through the security check point as soon as you have checked your luggage.

• Pay attention to Aeromexico personnel and airport announcements • (screens and intercom).

• Be at the boarding gate no less than 50 min prior to your flight’s scheduled departure.
