This ecotourism paradise is hidden in the heart of the cloud forest.

Best Bars: Mexican Edition
Por /By: Natalia Chávez

Founded by brothers Ricardo and Eduardo Nava, Bar Mauro captures the essence of the Italian aperitivo with a spirit that, in just two years, has captivated locals and travelers alike. Its concept balances the warmth of a neighborhood bar with impeccable technical execution, masterfully reinterpreting classics such as the Negroni and the Basilico. Form + Matter
CDMX/MEXICO CITY

The legacy of Handshake –the Mexican bar that has already achieved glory as the number one bar in the world–now permeates Mexico City through talents launching their own concepts. FOMA is proof of this lineage of excellence. Created by David Rocha and José Olivas, technical precision translates into an impeccable and hospitable “liquid experience,” where bar science embraces sustainability through the creative use of ingredients to minimize environmental impact. With an austere yet brilliant style, its now-iconic Good Sex and Lychee Martini with tequila demonstrate that, at FOMA, true complexity requires no embellishment.
El Gallo Altanero
GUADALAJARA
To understand Jalisco, tequila, and agave distillates, one must visit El Gallo Altanero in Guadalajara. Founded in 2017 by Freddy Andreasson and Alejandra de Aguinaga, this space elevates independent producers above major brands. Its bar is a laboratory of rare labels and seasonal menus; let the experts guide you through discovering unique blends. While the menu evolves according to available products, signature drinks such as the Martini Vampirito and the Jalisco Old Fashioned remain staples.

De La O revives the noble art of daytime drinking. Inspired by the authentic spirit of old-school cantinas, this space pays tribute to Mexican distillates and artisanal liqueurs by presenting local beverages such as tepache, carefully blended mezcal, and the freshest pulque. But the experience does not end at the bar; the culinary proposal is equally exceptional. With a menu that elevates neighborhood flavors –from traditional lonches tapatíos to tacos and enmoladas– De La O is the perfect refuge for enjoying Jalisco’s gastronomic and liquid heritage in broad daylight.

Mecenas GUADALAJARA

As one of the freshest and most disruptive concepts to arrive in Guadalajara, Mecenas has transformed a former garage in the Americana district into a sanctuary of mysticism and design. Led by bartender Arturo Santos, the bar’s mastery lies in the revaluation of regional sugarcane alcohol, used as the base for house-made liqueurs infused with fresh botanicals such as lavender, lemongrass, chamomile, and limoncello. They also serve their own fortified wines developed alongside Discográfica winery from Valle de Guadalupe. Mecenas is not simply a novelty; it is the new showcase for artisanal luxury.

Pinto Bar
MONTERREY
When it comes to Monterrey, a mandatory stop is with the city’s wine bar pioneers. Since opening in 2016, Pinto Bar has redefined the act of drinking wine under the vision of its creator, Chuy Villarreal. This space was born with the confidence of a trendsetter, establishing itself as a sanctuary for enthusiasts of honest, low-intervention wines full of character. The magic of Pinto lies in its perfect balance of hospitality: you arrive for the wines and stay for the food.
Maverick
MONTERREY
A spot that has defined the evolution of Monterrey’s nightlife is Maverick. Located in the heart of San Pedro, since 2012 this bar has been far more than a cocktail destination; it is a refuge where the spirit of jazz and rock converge to create a remarkable experience. Its atmosphere – low lighting and an industrial vintage aesthetic – invites guests to lose track of time among vinyl records and a bar that commands respect, as it pioneered signature cocktails in northern Mexico. With carefully curated music programming and an energy that never fades, Maverick remains the benchmark.

Medieval pilgrims had a rallying cry for it: Ultreia et Suseia, “further and higher.” More than a greeting, it was a philosophy. Eight centuries later, it remains the best way to describe what happens when you decide to walk. In every language, there are things that cannot be fully explained. In Galicia, they call it morriña: a longing, the desire to recover something lost that never entirely fades away.
Stone upon stone for eight centuries, this is a place where history does not catch up with you; instead, it envelops you. Thousands of footsteps have crossed these paths carrying something they wanted to leave behind or something they hoped to find. One step from Portugal into Spain and, suddenly: Tui. Monumentality appears without warning, the Cathedral of Santa María perched atop the hill, its battlements making it resemble a fortress more than a temple. A town that

From Tui, the Camino splits: inland toward forests, dirt roads, and deep Galicia, or toward the Atlantic. In 1493, La Pinta arrived at the port of Baiona carrying proof of lands that fit no known narrative. Here, unknowingly, the New World began. What I found in Santa Trega was silence, permanence, and the certainty that time passes without erasing everything; cobblestone alleyways preserve the traces of pilgrims who, for centuries, have been welcomed without hurry.
The maritime route of the traslatio xacobeo commemorates the boat journey that brought the Apostle’s remains. On this vessel, the Camino is distilled to its essence: pilgrims re-

As the final “Buen camino” echoes in the air, two feelings coexist in the chest: emptiness and fullness. Almost pride. The steps were not in vain, and the destination was always the journey. Blessed and exhausted, the return to Ithaca begins.

And once again, it all revolves around that hypnotic round object that bounces so whimsically. As Juan Villoro says in his latest football book, Los héroes numerados, “the ball is the world’s most popular object of desire.” While reflecting on the sphere that has captivated the world, the master of both prose and the soccer field also reminds us that it was a Mexican invention: “Alongside vanilla and chocolate, it has been our greatest contribution to joy.”

developed the ability to extract sap from rubber trees and vulcanize it to create the spheres that inspired countless stories across Mesoamerican ball game fields.
This is how the phrase adopted by the World Cup organizers in Mexico City is understood: “The ball returns home.” And indeed it will, turning this land into the only one to gather the football world on three separate occasions.
Here – just as with vanilla and chocolate – wonderful things have happened with the ball. During the first two times it rolled here, unforgettable moments unfolded, stories that are still talked about today.
In 1970, shortly after the inauguration of Estadio Azteca, the so-called “Game of the Century” took place, in which Italy defeated Germany after an epic battle where the great Franz Beckenbauer played with a dislocated arm strapped to his body.
Just days later, that same magical field witnessed the triumph of the man born Edson Arantes do Nascimento, the prodigy the world came to know simply as Pelé. The defining moment was etched into history on June 21st, 1970. “King” Pelé and his court elevated the legendary “Brazil of ’70” to its highest expression, a team that, more than five decades later, still defines football excellence.
Only sicteen years later, another superhuman figure left his mark on the Azteca. No one can agree on Diego Maradona’s greatest moment at the 1986 World Cup, but two days remain at the center of the debate. The first came on June 22nd. Playing against England, Maradona scored the infamous “Hand of God” goal and, just five minutes later, crafted what is widely considered the most beautiful goal of all time. According to David Goldblatt, “Maradona was the Devil and God within the span of five minutes.”
The next great feat arrived just seven days later, when Argentina defeated Germany 3-2, guided by Maradona’s magical feet. The World Cup trophy was lifted by two of the greatest figures ever to claim the throne of world football.
Forty years have gone by since those legendary moments. Estadio Azteca, (which during the tournament will be known as Mexico City Stadium) the only sporting venue in history able to boast three World Cup opening matches, underwent major renovations. Despite the transformation, the giant preserved both its structure and its soul. Still, several adjustments have brought its face closer to modernity. Its field shines as brightly as ever and is ready once again to welcome the world’s biggest stars.
However, unlike previous editions, the brightest stars may not remain here for long. This time, the story will be very different. Although Mexico will host the opening match and shape the tournament’s opening narrative, the country will host only thirteen of the tournament’s one hundred and four matches and will watch the final rounds unfold from afar.
Most of the World Cup will take place elsewhere. Even so, the pride remains untouchable: the ball returns home, promising a celebration worthy of its history.

MIRADA MEXICANA

Gramo realiza su primera colaboración con el Archivo Pedro Ramírez Vázquez./ Gramo presents its first collaboration with the Pedro Ramírez Vázquez Archive.

THE ICONIC LEGACY LEFT BY PEDRO RAMÍREZ VÁZQUEZ IN MEXICO CITY IS UNDENIABLE. Structures such as Estadio Azteca, the National Museum of Anthropology, the Museum of Modern Art, and the facilities built for the 1968 Olympic Games, among others, are firmly inscribed in the annals of the great architectural works of the 20th century.
It is for this reason that Mexican brand, Gramo, celebrates his work through the creation of Origen and Legado frames. The former will launch this summer, while the latter will debut in September, as a limited collection of 300 pieces per model.
MEXICAN VISION

Origen
The frame is crafted from Mazzucchelli acetate, and its design is inspired by the glasses worn by the architect.

The project, developed in close collaboration with the Pedro Ramírez Vázquez Archive – drew direct inspiration from the glasses worn by the architect himself. “The Origen frame reflects an earlier stage of Pedro, inspired by a photograph of him at Anthropology [museum],” explains Javier Graue, co-founder of Gramo. “Much of Ramírez Vázquez’s architecture refers back to the origins of pre-Hispanic culture, to the way he incorporated that entire tradition and iconography into his modern style. For us, creating this collaboration carries a double meaning: an architect who rescues origins and an architect who is part of our own origins.”

LA REAPERTURA
SALONES PREMIER: THE RE OPENING
at terminal 2 of mexico city international airport, aeromexico reopens two new lounges: the International Salón Premier and the Domestic Salón Premier. To learn more about the project, we spoke with José Esparza Chong Cuy, the art curator commissioned to select works for both spaces. We also spoke with Eduardo Ramos, Partner and Managing Director in Mexico at Gensler, and Nadja Borras, the firm’s Design Director.
What was the starting point for the project?
Eduardo Ramos (ER): We began this journey with Aeromexico more than four years ago, and together we established the vision and values of the most emblematic airline in our country: consistency, premium hospitality, personalized innovation, and contemporary Mexican design, which became the guiding principles for the transformation now materialized in these new spaces.
These values are reflected in the design solutions we developed for baggage documentation areas and the two Premier Lounges. Travelers will discover a variety of spaces offering different atmospheres for business or leisure travel, all designed with a contemporary Mexican design language, where Aeromexico will provide personalized premier hospitality resulting in memorable experiences for its clients.
Nadja Borras: For us, it was essential to give the lounges their own DNA, conceptual depth, and narrative background; the goal went far beyond simply selecting refined finishes, aesthetic furniture, and impeccable service. We sought to create a space with an authentic story to tell.
The experience was conceived as an oasis of serenity inspired by Xochimilco, an iconic ecosystem in Mexico City that offers travelers their first postcard view from above. The architectural design reinterprets the fluidity of its waterways and the rich chromatic blend of its vegetation and floriculture seen from the sky. This atmosphere of art and fluidity instills a profound sense of calm, specifically designed to mitigate travel stress and slow the pace of the traveler.
In contrast, the concept for the Domestic Lounge evokes the fascination of approaching the capital at night. The space pays tribute to that vast and striking network of lights that, from above, unfolds like precious filigree. The interior design captures the awe inspired by this urban fabric, translating it into an atmosphere of vibrant, sophisticated, and contemporary energy.
What was the greatest challenge you faced and how did you solve it through design?
ER: From the beginning of the project, we knew we would face the challenge of carrying out a major transformation within an operating airport, compounded by the World Cup context and the complete terminal remodeling. We succeeded in enabling Aeromexico to begin operations on time in both lounges, thanks to the collaboration and constant communication between our engineering teams and specialists, the leaders of Aeromexico’s various divisions, and the airport authorities.
How was it for you to translate Aeromexico’s identity into these spaces?
ER: From the start, we established a very strong connection with the Aeromexico team and maintained an ongoing dialogue that allowed us to develop a deep understanding of their values. This enabled us to create a design proposal with specific materiality for each lounge, featuring spatial richness composed of varying heights, textures, and lighting concepts.
We succeeded in creating a collection of unique experiences. We anticipated what people would feel upon entering and while in the lounges, surrounded by curated artworks and elements such as textiles crafted in Oaxaca and furniture designed and produced in Mexico. These decisions were guided by Aeromexico’s values and centered around its clients.

THE ART OF WAITING
José Esparza Chong Cuy was responsible for the art curation of both lounges, where travelers can transform waiting into contemplation through a diverse selection of works portraying Mexico’s richness and diversity. In this interview, he tells us about his participation in the project.
How do you build an artistic experience in such an ephemeral context?
José Esparza Chong Cuy: Aeromexico has an identity deeply tied to Mexico’s cultural history, and thinking about an artistic program from that perspective was especially interesting. Much of contemporary Mexican art reflects precisely on ideas of representation, identity, and how a country projects itself to the world, something the airline has historically embraced with pride as part of its image.
With this new initiative for the Premier Lounges, art becomes integrated as part of the experience itself, both in the domestic and international spaces. I think it is a very thoughtful vision: understanding these areas not merely as transit zones, but as environments where a cultural experience can exist. Even in a brief waiting period, a different connection to Mexico can emerge through contemporary art.
Is there a narrative travelers will understand while in these spaces?
JECC: It was very interesting to see how, through these conversations with Aeromexico, we were able to envision a broad representation of Mexican territory through different generations of artists. On one hand, there is a selection of works by the important artist Graciela Iturbide, who for decades has portrayed different realities and landscapes of Mexico. On the other hand, there is the work of Miguel Fernández de Castro, an artist from Sonora, whose aerial views of El Pinacate and the Altar Desert naturally dialogue with the experience of travel and flight itself.
It also felt important to incorporate that aerial perspective so closely linked to an airline: images that somehow recall what one observes from an airplane window. Added to this is the work of Abraham González Pacheco, who creates abstractions from natural pigments sourced from Malinalco, revealing another possible relationship between landscape, matter, and territory. Each artist proposes a different way of understanding and representing Mexico.
Do you believe these reopenings can be interpreted as a kind of cultural embassy for Mexico?
JECC: I believe both lounges can be understood as spaces projecting a contemporary image of Mexico to the world. Historically, art has been used as a tool for cultural diplomacy, and there are countless examples of this. Aeromexico represents a Mexico that is critical, creative, thoughtful, and deeply rooted in local identity, yet also contemporary and international. This project, which will continue to grow, is also an opportunity to showcase what Mexico represents, or even what it can become, through art, and I think that is incredibly valuable.

Los platos –presentados en estilo ozen–representan profundidad y paciencia./ The dishes – presented in ozen style –embody depth and patience.

in japanese zen tradition, retreats are not seen as a form of escape, but as discipline:, spaces where silence, repetition, and attention become tools to organize the mind. Centuries ago, monks lived in minimal quarters, ate from the immediate land, and devoted hours to practices such as calligraphy or tea preparation – understood not as aesthetic arts, but as exercises in presence. Today, that same logic takes shape at Zenbo Seinei, a wellness destination located on Awaki Island, about four hours from Tokyo. There, the experience is built from the essential: wood that perfumes the air, natural light that marks the passage of the day, and an architecture that strips away everything unnecessary. The rooms follow the tatami principle: half for wakefulness, a full one for sleep, offering a clear sense of proportion and use of space. Days are structured around precise practices: meditation sessions, matcha rituals, and calligraphy, where every stroke demands intention. Underground, the sanshin, a foot bath, introduces a physical pause that reshapes the body’s rhythm. Meanwhile, the entirely plant-based cuisine relies on fermentations of up to three years and rigorously selected local ingredients, free of sugar and additives.
At Zenbo Seinei, guests can also take part in workshops to prepare miso, create ceramic sculptures, tend the property’s garden, or go horseback riding. Different stay options – by the hour or by the day – offer a true opportunity to find calm, not only for the body, but for the spirit too.

Por/By: Natalia Chávez
The 1986 World Cup echoes through the collective memory. As the country once again vibrates with the excitement of a new World Cup on the horizon, Netflix presents México 86, a necessary film that reminds us of both the lights and shadows of our identity. Beyond the pitch lies a story of political survival and bureaucratic audacity. We met lead actress Karla Souza and screenwriter Daniel Krauze to unravel the layers of Gabriel Ripstein’s thriller.
méxico 86 portrays power not as a rigid structure, but as a game of mirrors and audacity. after inhabiting this story, is ingenuity our greatest tool?
karla souza: Definitely. Ingenuity is the greatest survival tool in Mexico. In the context of 1986 –a year marked by reconstruction after the earthquake and a suffocating economic crisis– there was this duality: projecting a happy Mexico ready for celebration while we were still broken inside. It’s a duality that still coexists today. We know there is pain and incompetence, but at the same time, we celebrate life. Football has that ability to unite us and make us forget our differences. The people I spoke to who lived through that era remember fondly how the World Cup lifted the country’s spirits. Of course,

diferencias.
I could write a thesis arguing the opposite, and I do not want to be naïve, but that Mexican audacity is what keeps us afloat. daniel krauze: I think it’s both. The film shows precisely that: the wonderful things we achieve through ingenuity and the cost it carries when taken to extremes. You see it in politics and in everyday Mexican life; we’re always figuring out how to use such ingenuity, either to move forward or to outsmart others. I hope the film invites reflection on those boundaries.
Daniel, since this is a story that has never been told before in cinema, how much “archaeology” in archives was involved, and how much creative freedom did you and Gabriel take in building this story?

DK: There was a tremendous amount of both. Gabriel Ripstein and I committed ourselves to extensive research. Gabriel would be the first to admit that, at the beginning, he didn’t know much about football – although by the end he knew more than I did, correcting me on facts about Denmark or Uruguay – but what neither of us knew was the story behind how Mexico secured the World Cup. What Mexico had to do to avoid losing hosting rights after the earthquake. That research was essential in selecting the moments with the richest narrative “juice.” I became enthusiastic about everything; I even wanted to include the origin story of Pique, the mascot, but we had to focus on the dramatic core. At the same time, we knew we were not making a documentary. Cinema is not a biographical document; if you want to know who William Wallace was, you read a book, you do not watch Braveheart. That creative license allowed us to play with characters such as Susana, portrayed by Karla.
And how did you avoid falling into easy nostalgia in order to focus on this political and human thriller?
DK: Gabriel was the one who prevented us from falling into tackiness. I am much more sentimental than he is; if it had been up to me, we would have shown every Mexican goal, Negrete’s goal in slow motion, and the opening match against Belgium. My passion for football kept pushing me in that direction, but that’s where the collaboration worked: I would pitch ideas and Gabriel would pull us back toward rigor. It was a process of bouncing ideas off each other, locking ourselves in offices, and having six-hour Zoom sessions talking about life and what we wanted the film to say.
Ripstein’s filmography stands out for an economy of resources and a certain aesthetic rigidity. How did you translate that into a screenplay where the climax does not happen on the field, but within bureaucracy?
DK: To me, it was essential for this not to end up mere-

ly as a colorful anecdote. We couldn’t end the film simply with the sporting achievement of drawing against the world runner-up and losing on penalties. That bittersweet feeling had to coexist, because shortly after 1986 came the “cachirules” scandal. We couldn’t ignore the fact that the very federation that secured the World Cup ultimately caused our absence from the following tournament. It was a challenge to determine how much time to dedicate to that bureaucratic aspect without losing rhythm, but it was a necessary step.
Karla, bringing you, Diego Luna, and Daniel Giménez Cacho together is like assembling the national acting dream team. What was that dynamic like between you?
KS: It was an enormous honor. I remember a dinner with Diego, Daniel, and other cast members where I felt like a five-year-old. Suddenly, the director would say, “Look at this table,” and I could only feel grateful. I have followed Daniel’s and Diego’s careers since I was little; they’re icons. In order to work with them, I had to “believe it was real for me,” applying some of that Mexican confidence so I would not feel intimidated. Now that I think about it, I was probably sweating much more than I appeared to be (laughs).
Karla, the film blends humor and intrigue. What was the most absurd thing you discovered about the real organization of the World Cup while filming?
KS: How Mexico secured the hosting rights! Discovering that a few tequilas and a party helped determine that the World Cup would take place in Mexico left me shocked. Sometimes I complicate my own life thinking things are harder or that there must be some international espionage plot behind it all, and it turns out there’s not. Maybe it serves as a reminder that, sometimes, what we need is not endless protocol, but rather knowing how to play the cards of closeness and spontaneity.
