UV helps birds metabolise specific vitamins, supports their vision, gives them access to the full-colour spectrum and improves mood. Unlike ectothermic species, we still struggle to fully understand how each species interacts with UV. As birds move in three dimensions and are not sun-reliant, there is still much for us to learn but a low UVI of 2-4 for around 5 hours a day has been proven to be beneficial to most species. Specific UV lighting products from brands such as Bird Systems and ZooMed allows for the easy implementation of UV to be installed above a bird’s cage. Depending on the brand of the lamp, these should be positioned 15-30cm away from the animal’s head and provide a gradient from the top down (keepers should check manufacturers guidelines).
