ore than 40 years ago, we took a group of adventurers to Kathmandu in the back of our Bedford truck on a mission to see the world for ourselves. It was the first Exodus trip, a chance to venture into the unknown with fellow explorers, to meet people along the way who could share perspectives different to our own, and to see the diverse destinations that they called home.

From ancient hilltop towns to miles of Mediterranean coastline, the undulating landscape of Puglia and Matera is ideal for exploring on two wheels. Read on to find out what Exodus customers, Sue Duncombe and her husband Patrick, thought of their recent cycling adventure through ‘the heel of Italy’s boot’.

W

hen asked what the highlight of their trip was, Sue said, “That’s such a difficult question – as there were so many! Starting in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Matera, location for the latest James Bond film, immediately set the bar very high. However, if I have to choose one highlight, it would be cycling through picturesque olive groves, with the classic circular Trulli houses dotted across the landscape. Some were recently renovated and some ramshackle, but that just added to the area’s character.

These buildings are what sets this region apart from everywhere else in Italy.”

It makes for a relaxed cycle as you don’t have to worry about taking wrong turns or punctures (the group only had one puncture all week). his adventure struck the perfect balance between cycling and sightseeing.

“I can’t quite believe how much we packed in!” exclaims Julie.

“Three stand-out experiences were the visit to Sigiriya, the walk around the lake at Kandy and of course the big climb to Nuwara Eliya – it was a challenge but stunningly beautiful.

The lake walk around Kandy was an early start, but you don’t want to miss it. It was like a miniature safari with birds, bats, monitors and all sorts just sitting waiting to be photographed. The game drive in Yala was also great – we had some incredible sightings including a sloth bear, hares, deer, crocodile, elephants and even a leopard.

Nothing was too much trouble.

It was like Suresh had ears everywhere, and if something was wanted or needed, it would magically appear, from ice-creams to dosas, new bikes to arrack and blankets in the bar! Suresh also

In January 2021, we partnered with leading biodiversity experts, Rewilding Europe, to help us work towards our Nature Net Positive goal and their aim of making Europe a wilder place.

Our Nature and Carbon Corridors Project aims to help rewild 5,000 hectares of the Italian Apennines over five years. Rewilding helps to restore our nature’s ecosystems and biodiversity, so that wildlife can return and thrive, while also combating climate change by increasing the land’s ability to absorb carbon. Capturing an estimated 85,000 tonnes of carbon over five years, these corridors will also help to increase the endangered Marsican bear population, and the recovery of the Apennine wolf, wild cat and other wildlife.
