Solos en casa Alone at home

Una casa, su casa y mi casa, es algo más que un proyecto arquitectónico, más que una unidad de construcción. Mucho más que un espacio diseñado para habitar. Una casa, todas y cada una de las casas, desde las más lujosas y grandes hasta las más sencillas, las más pequeñas y las más humildes, es ese lugar en el que cuando entramos nos sentimos seguros, a salvo de la vorágine que dejamos detrás de la puerta. Es como cuando jugamos al parchís y llegamos a unas de esas casillas en las que estás seguro, donde ningún otro jugador te puede comer, y tú respiras y descansas antes de volver a salir a la lucha diaria.

Una casa es ese lugar en el que hemos estado, prácticamente todo el mundo en todo el planeta encerrados un buen número de meses, solos y sin salir. Sin previo aviso nos hemos tenido que quedar todos en casa por nuestra seguridad y la de los demás, aislados, confinados. Hemos tenido que trabajar, comer, dormir, socializar, compartir en ese espacio en el que hasta ese momento apenas pasábamos muchos de nosotros un mínimo espacio de tiempo, tal vez solo para dormir y algo más los fines de semana. Dependiendo del clima de cada zona de la tierra, las casas son cuevas o lugares abiertos y de paso, pero de pronto todo fue un espacio cerrado, a veces compartido y otras muchas en soledad. Hemos comprendido la importancia de la luz, de la comodidad, de la eficacia de nuestras casas, hemos cambiado de forma de vestir, de comer, muchos han vuelto a hacer ejercicio, otros han regresado a los libros. Pero todo ha sido entre esas pocas paredes que delimitan nuestra casa. Es un fenómeno mundial que, sin duda, ha dado un giro a la mentalidad de la humanidad, un giro hacia la esencia de la vivienda, de lo que debe ser y de lo que significa.

A house — your house and mine — is much more than an architectural project, more than a unit that has been built, and much more than a space that has been designed to live in. A house — each and every house, from the biggest and most luxurious to the simplest, the smallest and the most humble — is a place in which we feel safe when we walk through the door, protected from the chaos of the world we leave behind us. It is like landing on a safe square in ludo, where no other player can eat you and you take a deep breath and rest before returning to the fray again.

A house is the place in which virtually everyone across the world has been locked in for the last few months, alone and without being able to leave. With no prior notice, we have all had to stay at home for our safety and that of others, isolated and confined. We have had to work, eat, sleep, socialise and share in a space in which many of us spent only a minimum amount of time before, a space that was solely for sleeping in and perhaps spending a little more time at weekends. Depending on the climate in your part of the world, your house might be a cave or an open place where you pass through. Yet without warning it became a closed space, sometimes shared but on many other occasions not. We have come to understand the importance of light, of comfort, of the efficiency of our homes. We have changed the way we dress and the way we eat. Many of us have started to exercise again. Others have gone back to books. And it has all been done between the few walls that mark out our house. It is a global phenomenon that has undoubtedly changed humankind’s

Sin embargo, los sin techo son una legión que crece en las grandes ciudades, y la emigración forzosa, por guerras, desastres naturales, cuestiones políticas, genera riadas de personas, de millones de personas que abandonan sus hogares hacia la nada, dejando atrás sus casas y sus pertenencias, una parte esencial de su vida y de sus personalidades, de aquello que son.

Paul B. Preciado dijo “Si quieres cambiar a un hombre, modifica su apartamento”, la pérdida de su casa, de su apartamento le cambiará la vida para siempre, aunque consiga (algo difícil) un nuevo hogar algún día. La casa, la vivienda, se ha convertido en un objeto de lujo, algo inalcanzable para muchos, incluso para personas con trabajo en las ciudades modernas que comparten piso, reduciendo su casa a una habitación, mucho más allá de la juventud. La especulación inmobiliaria debería ser un delito perseguido internacionalmente en lugar de un espléndido negocio.

Una casa es mucho más que esto, es también un álbum de imágenes recordadas, de momentos pasados, un retrato de quien la habita y una película de nuestra vida: la casa de los abuelos, la de los padres, la primera en que viviste solo, donde vives con tu familia, la casa donde veraneabas de niño… cada una diferente, como diferente eras tú en el momento en que vivías en cada una ellas. “Imaginar una casa es imaginar el mundo entero” (Yona Friedman). Pero no hay una casa ideal, como no hay un hombre ideal, cada casa se hace viviendo en ella. “La casa ideal es la que uno puede hacer suya sin alterar nada” (Alison y Peter Smithson). La casa ideal es la tuya, es la mía, es en la que vives y puedes aislarte del exterior, en la que eres feliz, y puedes estar solo, es esa a la que llamas “mi casa”. ¶

Though the right to adequate housing is enshrined in Article 25 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, homeless numbers continues to right in big cities, while forced migration brought about by war, natural disasters and political upheaval creates waves of millions of people who have no option but to abandon their homes and all their possessions and venture into the unknown, leaving behind them an essential part of their lives and their characters, an essential part of who and what they are.

Paul B. Preciado said, “If you want to change a person, change their apartment.” The loss of a house, an apartment, can change a person’s live forever, even if they are later able to acquire a new house, though that is no easy task. The house has become a luxury item, unattainable for many, even for those with jobs in modern cities who flat-share, their homes reduced to a room, way after their youth is over. Property speculation should be a crime prosecuted around the world; not an attractive business.

A house is much more than this. It is an album of remembered images, of past moments, a portrait of who inhabits it and a film of our lives: your grandparents’ house, your parents’ house, the house where you first lived alone, where you live with your family, where you spent summers as a child… each of them different, as different as you were when you lived in each of them. “To imagine one house is to imagine the whole world” (Yona Friedman). And yet there is no ideal house, just as there is no ideal man. A house is made by living in it. “The ideal home is the one you can make yours without changing anything.” (Alison and Peter Smithson).

The ideal home is yours. It is mine. It is where you live and where you escape from the outside world. It is where you are happy and where you can be alone. Los interiores de nuestras casas son un lugar especialmente atractivo para casi cualquier curioso, además de una inagotable cantera para artistas plásticos, fotógrafos, cineastas, escritores, escenógrafos y para antropólogos, sociólogos o arquitectos, pero al mismo tiempo son también un lugar desconocido. Desde la calle y tras las fachadas que la encajonan, las ventanas de los edificios son una invitación a imaginar los interiores encerrados tras los cristales, apenas insinuados por la luz que emiten al atardecer o en la noche y, en algún caso, por alguna silueta fugaz. Fabulamos sobre estos interiores, pero son imprevisibles y nos sorprenden cuando podemos acceder a visitarlos o a verlos a través de fotografías, ya sean intencionadas —“montadas” podríamos decir—, o casuales, como cuando se publican acompañando una noticia en la prensa, algún reportaje o alguna entrevista a alguien en su casa. Dos extremos que podrían corresponder a la ficción y al documental. Los interiores reales, en los que no ha habido tiempo ni intención de componer en ellos una escena determinada, son muy distintos de los interiores que podemos ver, por ejemplo, en las ofertas de alquiler de compañías como Airbnb. En estas se muestran muebles, objetos varios o textiles, que componen una escena, podríamos decir, “comercial”. Podrían alquilarse hoy a alguien, y mañana a otra persona distinta, pero sus inquilinos parecen no dejar huellas en ellos, nadie deja ni hace algo demasiado personal allí. En cualquier caso, estas campañas publicitarias globales denotan un cambio en la sensibilidad hacia nuestros interiores y en el interés que estos despiertan en tanto que espacios habitables, parecen obedecer a algo parecido a querer alquilarlos como hogares más que como espacios.

Our home interiors have a special attraction for inquisitive types and are an inexhaustible source of inspiration for visual artists, photographers, directors, writers, and set designers, not to mention anthropologists, sociologists and architects. Yet at the same time, they are also an unknown place. Viewed from the street and encased in facades, the windows of buildings are an invitation to imagine the interiors behind the glass, which are merely hinted at by the light they cast when night falls or by an occasional, fleeting silhouette. Though we try to imagine what these interiors are like, they cannot be predicted and surprise us when we have the chance to visit them or view them in photographs, such encounters either being planned — or “staged” we might say — or coincidental, such as when they accompany a newspaper article, report or an interview with someone in their home, two extremes that correspond to fiction and the documentary. Real interiors, which have not been staged due to a lack of time or intention, are markedly different to the interiors

Cuando vemos fotografías de quienes se han interesado y dedicado a capturar los lugares reales de la intimidad, destaca la reunión de muebles, objetos de todo tipo y elementos decorativos, incluido el papel pintado, las alfombras o las plantas. El conjunto de todos ellos sobrepasa cualquier tentativa de explicación racional de qué hacen allí, el propio conjunto resulta inclusivo e integrador y ordena lo que parecía imposible ordenar. Es difícil ver estos interiores y no darse cuenta de que los muros y tabiques no están para soportar techos y envigados o para separar espacios y que su función más importante tal vez sea la de componer verdaderos “teatrinos” en los que se representa nuestra vida. we see, for example, on holiday rental sites such as Airbnb, which show furniture, miscellaneous items, and textiles arranged to create a scene that can be described as “commercial”. Though rented by one person one day and another the next, their inhabitants seem to leave no trace on them. Nothing personal is left or done there. These global advertising campaigns reveal a shift in awareness of our interiors, and in terms of the interest they awaken as habitable spaces, they seem to reflect a desire to rent them as homes rather than spaces.

When we look at the photographs of people who take an interest in and capture real, intimate spaces for posterity, what stands out is the collection of furniture — objects of all types and decorative elements, including wallpaper, rugs and plants. In being brought togeth-

er, they evade any rational explanation of what they are doing there. The whole is inclusive, integrating and organises what appears impossible to organise. It is hard to see these interiors without realising that walls and partitions are not there to hold up ceilings and beams or divide spaces up. Perhaps their most important function is to create little theatres in which our life plays out. In order to understand this coming together, it is perhaps worth trying to see the house as a garden. If we saw this collection of objects as plants, bushes and trees — no matter their status, rarity or commonality — then it might have some meaning. If the garden is essentially a representation, then so is the house, only more so. And just as in a garden, there are no weeds in a house. The items it contains talk to us of the gardener who gives them meaning.

Si el jardín es en esencia una representación, con más motivo lo es la casa y al igual que en el jardín, en la casa no existen las malas hierbas, y no hacen más que hablarnos del jardinero que les da sentido.

Los interiores parecen estar conectados con la vida interior —y también anterior— de quienes los habitan. Nuestras casas permiten precisamente eso, mostrar una expresión personal que parece ser ilimitada y que es imposible trasladar a otros lugares, solo los artistas parecen gozar de esta condición, ellos tienen permiso para expresarse libremente incluso en público. Pero en el interior de nuestras casas muchos parecen conectar con los artistas porque sencillamente entienden que la casa es el espacio de la libertad. Aunque

They reveal a personal expression that appears to be limitless and cannot be conveyed to other places. Only artists seem to enjoy this condition. They have the licence to freely express themselves, even in public. Yet, the interiors of our houses are places where many people seem to connect with artists because they understand that the house is a space for freedom.

We lock ourselves away in them voluntarily, like the central character in Georges Perec’s Un homme qui dort [A Man Asleep], the story of a man residing in a single-room Parisian apartment with only a few personal possessions for company, which was made into a film by Perec himself and the director Bernard Queysanne in 1974. We are shut up in them too, like Xavier de Maistre who, during his house arrest, used his imagination and the objects and paintings in his room to go on journeys, an experience he recounts in his novel Voyage autour de ma chambre [Voyage Around My Room], in which, paradoxically and effusively, he demonstrates his freedom under arrest.

De Maistre’s case and those of so many others who have been arrested and confined to their own homes, might lead us to believe that these interior spaces, when compared to the street and the public spaces of the city, are nothing but dungeons. The fact is, however, they epitomise the ideal of freedom. In the western world, the public space is generally seen as something democratic. This is indeed what we call it. And while that is true, the public space does have rules — the rules of citizenship, which we agree on so that we can live together. That is why it is democratic. These rules, or part of them, are rendered visible on all types of signs, on road, pavement and kerb markings, and on traffic lights. They make up a vast collection of instructions that organise and direct us in places such as city parks, which appear to us to be a free space. In contrast, the domestic space embodies freedom rather than democracy. Where rules do exist, we are the ones that lay them down, without even having to write TEXT

nos encerremos en ella voluntariamente, como el protagonista del texto de Georges Perec Un homme qui dort [Un hombre que duerme], instalado en una chambre de bonne parisina con unos pocos enseres y llevada al cine por el mismo Perec y el cineasta Bernard Queysanne en 1974; o nos encierren en ella, como a Xavier de Maistre que, durante su arresto domiciliario, viajaba con la imaginación ayudado de los objetos y pinturas por el interior de su cuarto, una experiencia recogida en su novela Viaje alrededor de mi habitación, en la que paradójicamente exhibía de manera efusiva su libertad, aún en su arresto.

El caso de Xavier de Maistre, como el de tantos otros arrestados o confinados en sus domicilios, puede llevarnos a pensar que esos espacios interiores, comparados con la calle y en general con el espacio público en las ciudades, son mazmorras, cuando son los que encarnan el ideal de libertad. El espacio público en el mundo occidental generalmente lleva asociada la palabra democrático. El espacio público democrático, decimos, y es cierto; sin embargo, el espacio público conlleva reglas, las reglas de la ciudadanía que pactamos para convivir. Por eso es democrático. Estas reglas, o una parte de ellas, se hacen visibles en señalizaciones varias, en gráficas pintadas en el pavimento, en aceras, bordillos y semáforos que ordenan y dirigen en una extensa colección de instrucciones de uso en medio de las cuales un parque urbano aparece como un espacio liberado. Sin embargo, el espacio doméstico no encarna la democracia sino la libertad. Las reglas existen, pero las dictamos nosotros y ni siquiera las escribimos. Lo que hay en esos espacios es nuestro, no es de todos, y por eso nos define, forma parte de una especie de aura material que nos rodea.

Los objetos que llevamos con nosotros a lo largo de nuestra vida, y con los que dibujamos también nuestra forma de vivir, parafraseando a Perejaume, construyen un hogar y nuestra intimidad.

La intimidad puesta de manifiesto crudamente por la película Nomadland de Chloé Zhao, la constatación de que “no tener una casa no es lo mismo que no tener un hogar”, mostraba de nuevo esta faceta del espacio en el que vivimos, y lo hacía desde un interior minúsculo, el de una camioneta Ford Econoline del 2001 convertida en su espacio íntimo, dotada de lo imprescindible, una cama, algunos estantes, cofres para objetos y un fogoncillo, además de sus diferentes expansiones hacia el espacio exterior circundante al estacionarse junto a carreteras y autopistas, ayudándose de toldos, sillas de playa plegables y algún que otro soporte. them. What occupies these spaces belongs to us. It is not common property, which is why it defines us. It forms part of a type of material aura that surrounds us.

The objects we take with us during the course of our lives and which we also use to sketch out our ways of life, to paraphrase Perejaume, create a place and our intimacy. The intimacy starkly laid bare by Chloé Zhao’s film Nomadland, the assertion that “not having a house is not the same as not having a home”, once again reveals this characteristic of the space in which we live. And it does so from a miniscule interior, that of a 2001 Ford Econoline van converted into her intimate space and kitted out with a few essentials — a bed, some shelves, storage chests, and a camping stove — an interior that also expands outwards to take in the surroundings of where she parks her van, by the side of roads and highways, where she makes use of sunshades, folding beach chairs, and other resources. What we own is not important. An attachment to what we possess can be discerned, however, be it a dinner service inherited from our grandparents or the clothes we wear. Alternatively, it can merely be a manifestation of our own taste and in some way an emotional connection with something we recognise ourselves in and with which we introduce ourselves.

In his short essay In a Room and a Half, Joseph Brodsky describes the room in which he lived with his parents in a kommunalka in St Petersburg. The text provides an expansive contemplation of the items in it, which range from his parents’ big bed, upon which the three would “meet” to talk, and the huge wardrobe in which they kept everything they possessed, to the TEXT

que poseemos, pero se adivina cuando hay alguna afectividad con lo que tenemos, puede ser una vajilla heredada de tus abuelos o la ropa que vestimos, o simplemente es una demostración del gusto propio y en cierto modo una conexión afectiva con aquello en lo que nos reconocemos y con lo que nos damos a conocer.

Joseph Brodsky, en el pequeño ensayo En una habitación y media, describe la habitación en la que vivía con sus padres en una kommunalka de san Petersburgo. El texto muestra una consideración sobre los objetos muy amplia, que va de la gran cama de sus padres en la que se “reunían” los tres para hablar, o el gigantesco armario en el que guardaban todo lo que poseían, y alcanza algunos muebles y enseres de los que se servía Brodsky para construir una separación precaria, y con ella conseguir intimidad cuando alcanza la edad en la que su necesidad es imperiosa. Las kommunalkas soviéticas eran pisos colectivos habilitados en edificios de familias acomodadas en los que las habitaciones se habían convertido en apartamentos, pero no se podían hacer obras en ellos, especialmente compartimentaciones. Creo que no es ninguna banalidad señalar que durante años no hemos tenido fotografías de esta habitación que hoy se muestra reencontrada y desamueblada, por eso el ensayo de Brodsky es tan importante desde el punto de vista de describir el lugar en el que vivimos, su texto seguirá siendo la mejor fotografía del interior del edificio del nº 27 de la Ulitsa Pestelya.

furniture and possessions Brodsky used to create a precarious wall that give him some intimacy when he reached the age at which he absolutely needed it. Soviet-era kommunalkas were communal single-room apartments in buildings seized from the Russian nobility and where alterations were not permitted, particularly their division into smaller spaces. His contemplation of items even included the room’s ceiling. Brodsky sees the damp patches that appear on it as fantastic maps. He lies on his parents bed and gazes at them, an image that clearly owes something to his father’s job as a cartographer in the Soviet navy. I think it is worth pointing out that we have gone years without photographs of the room that is now re-

discovered and devoid of furniture. That is why Brodsky’s essay is so important in terms of describing the place in which we live. His text remains the best possible photograph of the interior of the building at No. 27 Ulitsa Pestelya.

Marta Soul ¿Quién era Florence Owens Thompson?1 Who was Florence Owens Thompson?1 Las fotografías de Marta Soul son retratos de mujeres desplazadas, aunque a primera vista nada nos indique su condición de emigrantes. La esmerada puesta en escena y el cuidado estilismo podrían hacernos pensar que se enmascara una realidad, a menudo presentada de forma más dramática y urgente, sobre todo en los registros habituales del fotoperiodismo. Sin embargo, este proyecto pone sobre la mesa todo aquello que las representaciones fotoperiodísticas suelen excluir al abordar las crisis migratorias. En estas fotografías de Marta Soul no solo se habla del éxodo. En ellas se produce una insólita conexión entre la emigración y los paraísos domésticos de la clase media. Puede que carezcan de dramatismo, pero en cambio sugieren un vínculo obliterado con demasiada frecuencia. Al posar en pisos nuevos, junto a los radiadores y las camas por estrenar, esos cuerpos femeninos dejan atrás la codificación victimista que las encierra en un círculo de precariedad. De repente han roto con la transicionalidad endémica. Han llegado a ocupar los espacios reservados a los sueños de otras mujeres. De ahí que la cualidad ficcional de la serie no represente objeción alguna para que siga manteniendo una estrecha relación con un fenómeno tan real como la emigración. Como diría Terry Eagleton, hay cosas que para hacerlas reales deben pasar a la ficción.

The photographs of Marta Soul are portraits of displaced women, though there is nothing to suggest at first sight that they are emigrants. Given the obvious effort she puts into staging and styling them, we could be forgiven for thinking that they conceal a reality that is often presented in a more dramatic and urgent manner, particularly in registers commonly associated with photojournalism. What this project does, however, is reveal everything that photojournalism invariably omits when casting its lens on the world’s migrant crises. Soul’s photographs touch on more than just exodus. They create a hitherto unseen connection between emigration and the domestic paradises of the middle classes. Though perhaps lacking in dramatism, they point to a link that is erased all too frequently. By posing in new flats next to new radiators and new beds, these 1. female bodies take a decisive step away from being victims, a tag that would otherwise condemn them to a life of insecurity.

They break with endemic transitionality and come to occupy spaces reserved for the dreams of other women. It is for this reason that the fictional quality of the series does not in any way undermine its close relationship with a phenomenon as real as emigration. As Terry Eagleton would say, there are things that have to become fiction before they can become real.

El estatus icónico que ha alcanzado esa imagen de una mujer pobre y nómada, rodeada de sus hijas, forma parte también del complejo proceso fotográfico que la ha colmado de significado. En este caso, una trabajadora nómada atrapada en la crisis económica de los años treinta y su condición precaria fueron eternizadas por medio de la fotografía. In this case, an itinerant worker caught in the Great Depression and her precarious existence were made eternal through the medium of photography. Her face has taken its place in the history of both the United States and the medium itself, though her person has also suffered as a result of being captured in an instant by a camera, a moment in which control is exerted forever over her body and her children, who hide their faces as the photograph is taken. Almost a century on, the image captured by Lange remains one of a woman dispossessed, as if there were no possibility that her plight may well have improved in the years after it was taken, which is what in fact happened. Added to the social injustice that the photograph sought to denounce is another layer of injustice inherent in the mechanisms of representation, which are so often viewed as transparent and free of all blame. In the late 1970s, Florence Owens Thompson was revealed as the women that Lange had captured for posterity that day in the outskirts of Nipomo, California, at the height of the Great Depression. The newspapers of the day depicted her as someone who had fought desperately to be recognised as the subject of the photograph. A local publication even wrote a story about her under the following headline: “Woman Fighting Mad over Famous Depression Photo”. The caption to the photo would nevertheless follow Florence to her grave, where her epitaph reads: “Migrant Mother–A Legend of the Strength of American Motherhood”.

In the 21st century, David Goldblatt has continued to document the existence of nomadic workforces. On 18 September 2002, on the road that links Beaufort West with New Rooiberg in post-apartheid South Africa, Goldblatt portrayed a sizeable group of them. With scrupulous attention to detail, the caption reveals the names and surnames of these individuals. The chance encounter between the photographer and the people who agreed to pose for him forms part of an ambitious project that Goldblatt entitled Intersections. Unlike his previous photographs, the landscape breaks into Goldblatt’s work here, giving the impression that this anti-apartheid TEXT

campaigner has succumbed to the charms of the picturesque. Yet, that is not the case. The sheer scope of the vistas hints at subtle signs of a violence that has left an indelible mark on the soil of South Africa.

Large-scale mineral mining, contamination, fences in the middle of nowhere, and the sudden appearance of groups of itinerant workers, whose names Goldblatt always gives in the caption, strip this visual idyll bare. In this case, the photographer documents the deep wounds inflicted by the apartheid regime, while also dramatizing an observation that is ashamed of itself. The poet William Wordsworth was surely the first to say it:

“… giving way To a comparison of scene with scene, Bent overmuch on superficial things, Pampering myself with meagre novelties Of colour and proportion.”

Later would come novelists such as Nadine Gordimer and J. M. Coetzee, joined

by Goldblatt with his camera.

So, far from appealing to a tradition of photographers committed to depicting the displaced, it is more relevant to dig into the history of a postcolonial viewpoint, one that is aware of its limitations and responsibilities, as it is not a modern-day issue but a phenomenon with a historicity that demands a specific visibility. New ways of appealing to conscience have recently emerged in opposition to this postcolonial stance. Bad news, relating to events that have just happened or in a relatively distant past, arrives not just through channels that specialise in covering events of this type. It can suddenly appear in formats more closely associated with entertainment and consumption.

Fashion and commercial cinema photography can transform the most hideous events into a digestible narrative in which their potential to unsettle has been defused.

Hotel Rwanda (Terry George, 2004), Blood Diamond (Edward Zwick, 2006) and The Last King of Scotland (Kevin Macdonald, 2006) are the cinematic equivalents of what Oliviero Toscani did in using extremely harsh images to a promote a clothing

Así pues, lejos de apelar a una tradición de fotógrafos comprometidos con la representación de individuos desplazados, resulta más pertinente indagar en la historia de una mirada poscolonial, consciente de sus limitaciones y responsabilidades. Ya que no se trata de un tema de actualidad, sino de un fenómeno cuya historicidad requiere una visibilidad específica. Pues frente a esta mirada poscolonial, últimamente han surgido nuevas formas de apelar a la conciencia. Las malas noticias, referidas a hechos inmediatos o a un pasado relativamente distante, no llegan solo a través de canales de información especializados en la cobertura de acontecimientos de esta índole. De repente aparecen en formatos más propios del entretenimiento y el consumo.

En este sentido, la capacidad de las imágenes para domesticar el trauma podría ser el tema central en muchas películas del director de cine austriaco Michael Haneke. Caché (2005), su último título, relata cómo la apacible vida de un presentador de televisión llamado George, un hombre culto de clase media, se ve alterada por unas cintas de vídeo. De un modo misterioso llegan a su buzón grabaciones del exterior de su propio hogar. Se trata de planos carentes de cualquier dramatismo. Pero, poco a poco, esas grabaciones provocan en el protagonista de la película una auténtica crisis personal. Un extraño, lejano y traumático suceso acontecido en la infancia de George irrumpe en sueños. Y así, desestabilizado por imágenes de video y pesadillas inicia una indagación que le llevará hasta un hermanastro de origen argelino. Cuando George encuentra a este hombre en su modesto apartamento —y al que no había visto desde que fuera expulsado de su familia— mantiene una breve conversación con él.

brand. These films and that advertising campaign do not appear to have been created to bring about radical change. On the contrary, they seem to help us view ongoing injustice as something familiar.

In this respect, the ability of image to tame and subdue trauma could be the central theme of many of the films by Austrian director Michael Haneke. Caché (2005), his latest work [this article was written in 2007], tells the tale of how the peaceful life of a well-read, middle-class TV producer called George is turned upside down when video recordings of the outside of his house mysteriously find their way into his letterbox.

Though there is nothing remotely dramatic about the recordings, they plunge the film’s central character into a personal crisis. A strange, distant and traumatic event from George’s childhood suddenly appears in his dreams. Thrown off balance by the videos and his nightmares, he embarks on an investigation that leads him to an Algerian half-brother. When George finds him in his modest apartment, having not seen him since he was thrown out by his family, he speaks to him, briefly. Then, with no warning, the half-brother commits suicide in front of him. Events such as these point to a growing threat, with the audience’s only clue as to the source of this threat being provided by images. In addition to the video tapes, George also receives childish drawings with troubling subject matter.

A specialist in subalternity and representation, such as John Beverly, would say that these images – which are perhaps TEXT

George. De modo que la película encadena hechos como éste con una amenaza creciente, cuyo origen los espectadores solo pueden remitir a imágenes. Junto a las cintas de video, George descubre a menudo unos dibujos de corte infantil, pero de contenido dramático.

Un especialista en representaciones subalternas, como John Beverly, diría que esas imágenes —tal vez poco elaboradas estéticamente— han desequilibrado la razonable vida de George. En muchas películas de este director, desde El vídeo de Benny (1992) hasta Código oculto (2000), los representantes de la clase media ven cómo sus ideales de la cultura burguesa se vienen abajo. Curiosamente sus dramas suelen desarrollarse con un fondo de paredes repletas de iconos del arte del siglo XX o estanterías saturadas de libros. Hay algo, una imagen o un hecho, que invierte la precariedad atribuida a los otros y que hace que esa inseguridad empiece a sentirse en primera persona. En ese momento se pone en duda un estilo de vida confortable que a menudo —y en un grado mayor de lo que somos capaces de reconocer— depende de tragedias y catástrofes lejanas.

Por eso, en las fotografías de Marta Soul, la sensación de apacible comodidad solo es eso, una sensación. El dispositivo ficcional con el que ha retratado a esas mujeres procedentes de diversos lugares unifica su indumentaria y su aspecto, sin importar las diferencias étnicas. La homogeneidad de esta serie encubre procedencias tan distintas como China, Rumania, Chile, Guinea, Marruecos, Liberia y Venezuela. Sus historias de vida desembocan en un escenario común que borra cualquier rastro de violencia geopolítica. Del mismo modo que la mujer de la foto de Dorothea Lange había perdido el nombre propio en el proceso fotográfico, estas otras mujeres son desposeídas de sus diferencias a cambio de un sueño de clase media. Salvo que, en este caso, la fotografía ya no se expone a sí misma como una representación inocente. Al contrario, hace explícita su complicidad con los procesos sociales de segregación y de asimilación. ¶

not very well developed aesthetically – throw George into turmoil. In many of Haneke’s films, from Benny’s Video (1992) to Code Unknown (2000), members of the middle class see how their bourgeois ideals come apart at the seams. Strangely, his dramas usually play out with a backdrop of walls filled with 20th-century art icons and shelves groaning under the weight of books. There is something, an image or an event, that inverts the uncertainty normally attributed to others and causes the central character to feel it instead. It is then that a comfortable lifestyle that often – and to a greater degree than we are capable of recognising – depends on the tragedies and catastrophes of others is called into question. That is why, in Marta Soul’s photographs, the sensation of peacefulness and comfort is just that: a sensation.

The fictional device she uses to depict these women from various places gives their clothing and appearance a sense of uniformity, regardless of their ethnic differences. The homogeneous nature of this series brings together people from places as far flung as China, Romania, Chile, Guinea, Morocco, Liberia and Venezuela.

Her life stories lead to a common setting that removes any trace of geopolitical violence. In the same way that the woman in Dorothea Lange’s photograph loses her identity in the photographic process, these other women are deprived of their differences for a middle-class dream, except that in this case the photograph is not exposed to itself as an innocent representation. On the contrary, its complicity with the social processes of segregation and assimilation is made clear. ¶

El concepto de hogar tiene que ver con los recuerdos, la intimidad y el apego relativos a ciertos lugares. En la serie A Matter of Some Moments fotografío a familias en sus casas. Varias instantáneas, tomadas a lo largo del tiempo, se superponen y funden entre sí. En la imagen resultante, el espacio sigue siendo prácticamente el mismo, pero las acciones e interacciones de las familias se captan en posiciones distintas, de manera que cada una de ellas adquiere una apariencia efímera y fantasmal. Las fotografías resaltan la temporalidad del ser y se convierten en un testimonio de los acontecimientos en apariencia mundanos que a menudo constituyen recuerdos significativos.

Como afirma Gaston Bachelard en su libro La poética del espacio, “la casa tiene a la vez unidad y complejidad, está hecha de recuerdos y experiencias, sus distintas partes suscitan sensaciones diferentes y, sin embargo, produce una experiencia unitaria e íntima de vivir”. Al evocar sentimientos tanto de nostalgia como de pérdida, la quietud de las imágenes suspende un instante del tiempo, creando un espacio para la reflexión sobre las propias experiencias y los paisajes familiares de nuestros recuerdos y lugares.

A Matter of Some Moments A sense of home is about memories, intimacy, and the attachment one has with certain places. In the series A Matter of Some Moments I am photographing families at home. Several photographs, taken over time, are layered together and faded into each other. In the resulting image, the space remains mostly the same but the families’ actions and interactions are captured in different positions, each presenting an ephemeral, ghostlike appearance. Highlighting the temporality of being, the photographs become a testament to the seemingly

mundane happenings that often comprise meaningful memories. As Gaston Bachelard states in his book The Poetics of Space, “the house has both unity and complexity, it is made out of memories and experiences, its different parts arouse different sensations and yet it brings up a unitary, intimate experience of living.” Evoking feelings of both nostalgia and loss, the stillness in the images briefly suspends time, creating room for thought about one’s own experiences, and the familiar landscapes of our memories and places.

Project Family de Motoyuki Daifu (Tokio, Japón, 1985) es una serie de imágenes sobre su familia: siete personas y un gato que viven en una casa de cinco habitaciones. Al contrario del imaginario asociado a Japón, donde el orden, la sobriedad o el minimalismo parecen imperantes, estas imágenes capturan el caos de la vida doméstica. Daifu nos abre las puertas a la intimidad de su familia que, lejos de transmitir estrés o desasosiego —de hecho, apenas reaccionan a la presencia de la cámara—, parecen estar perfectamente adaptados a su entorno y ser capaces de disfrutarlo, vivirlo con tranquilidad e, incluso, desearlo.

Daifu empezó a trabajar en Project Family mientras vivía con su familia en los suburbios de Yokohama, la segunda ciudad más grande de Japón ubicada a las afueras de Tokio.

Comenzó a tomar las fotografías como parte de una asignatura de la escuela de fotografía y, los resultados, generaron cierta extrañeza e incomodidad al resto de los alumnos, cuya realidad familiar era muy distinta. Project Family by Motoyuki Daifu (Tokyo, Japan, 1985) is a series of images of his family: seven people and a cat living in a five-bedroomed house.

Somewhat at odds with the image commonly associated with Japan, where order, sobriety and minimalism seemingly reign supreme, these images capture the chaos of domestic life. Daifu opens the doors to his family at its most intimate. Far from projecting any stress or unease – they barely react to the presence of the camera, in fact – they appear to be perfectly at one with their surroundings and able to enjoy them, to be entirely at peace with themselves, and even to want them.

Daifu began working on Project Family while living with his family in the suburbs of Yokohama, the second largest city in Japan, situated in the outskirts of Tokyo. He started taking the photographs for a school photography course. His fellow students were puzzled by the results. Living a very different everyday reality, the sight of them made them felt uncomfortable. The photographer recognises that foreign audiences react in a similar way, given the aforementioned view they have of domestic life in Japan, which they associate with cleanliness and refinement. Daifu stresses the fact, however, that there is nothing unusual about his family’s house and the lives they live in it, arguing that they are scenes replicated in many other places.

These flash-lit photographs capture colours and textures with great density, heightening the sense of chaos and fusing the people who appear in them with their cluttered backdrops. They are hyper-stimulating images that could easily be overwhelming but in which the warmth the artist feels for his family is not at all undermined. In no way does he seek to ridicule or question their lives.

Till death us do part (Hasta que la muerte nos separe) es una serie de fotografías performativas que nos representan a mi marido Peter y a mí en diversas situaciones absurdas dentro y alrededor del ámbito doméstico. La cuestión de quién tiene permitido ocupar la esfera familiar se reafirma mediante la representación fotográfica y se conmemora en el “álbum fotográfico familiar”, que retrata a parejas que se adecúan a las “normas” sociales.

Como académico, yo he criticado lo que el “álbum fotográfico familiar” representaba desde el punto de vista de la normalidad y la otredad, así que hay pocas pruebas fotográficas de los treinta años que Peter y yo llevamos juntos. Dado que mi marido pasa ya de los ochenta años, parecía haber cierta premura por trabajar juntos y explorar conceptos de representación conyugal y familiar. Till death us do part are a series of performative photographs that depict my husband Peter and I in a number of absurd scenarios in and around the domestic environment. The question of who is allowed to occupy the family domain is reaffirmed through photographic representation, and memorialised in the photographic ‘family album’, depicting couples who conform to societal ‘norms’.

As an academic, I was critical of what the photographic ‘family album’ represented in terms of normality and otherness so there is little photographic evidence to represent the 30 years that Peter and I have spent together.

As Peter is now in his 80s there seemed to be an urgency to make work together exploring concepts of couples and family representation. Roland Barthes famously declared “the photograph does not necessarily say what is no longer, but only and for certain what has been”. In a world where some countries deny the legitimacy of same sex relationships, and intolerance toDOSSIER

En un principio, el enfoque de la creación fotográfica se inspiró en ejemplos de retratos de pareja y de bodas de la historia del arte. El retrato de Giovanni Arnolfini y Giovanna Cenami (1434), pintado por Jan van Eyck, es seguramente la representación más famosa de un retrato de boda en la historia del arte occidental. The approach to image making was initially inspired by examples of the couple/wedding portrait from art history. Jan van Eyck’s portrait of Giovanni Arnolfini and Giovanna Cenami (1434) is probably the most famous depiction of a wedding portrait in the history of western art. In conversation pieces Mario Praz says that “the presence of the Arnolfini married couple fascinates us and at the same time produces a vague uneasiness, as when we are facing uncannily lifelike wax figures, because their immobility is like that of the things which surround them”.

The resulting images reflect a couple who are at odds with the situation that surrounds them. It is this sense of the uncanny which Freud talked about in terms of heimlich and unheimlich – homely/unhomely or familiar/ unfamiliar.

Within a gay world in which flamboyance can be taken as a ‘norm’, the images transgress normality by adopting the ordinariness of the suit and tie.

Home Sweet Home Grados de separación Degrees of separation

En sus memorias, Stephen Fry relata un encuentro que tuvo con Alistair Cooke. Tras el apretón de manos, el escritor y presentador del programa de radio Letter from America informó a Fry de que le estaba estrechando la mano a alguien que le había dado la mano a Bertrand Russell. Cuando Fry expresó su asombro, el literato añadió que eso no terminaba ahí: que Bertrand Russell conocía a Robert Browning y que la tía de Bertrand Russell había bailado con Napoleón.

In his memoirs, Stephen Fry remarked on an encounter he had with Alastair Cooke. After shaking hands, the writer and broadcaster synonymous with letter from America, informed Fry that he was shaking the hand of someone who had shook the hand of Bertrand Russell.

When Fry displayed amazement, the man of letters added that it didn’t stop there, and that Bertrand Russell knew Robert Browning and Bertrand Russell’s aunt had danced with Napoleon.

This example of ‘degrees of separation’, a concept which influenced the early thought on social networks, reminded me of a curious connection between my homeland of south Wales, the promised land of America, the notion of home and the politics of otherness.

The sentimental ballad “home sweet home”, written by John Howard Payne in 1822, and adopted after his death as a unifying propaganda during the American Civil War, offered solace in a time where a nation was divided or split geographically.

The song became synonymous with the opera singer Adelina Patti who was

described by Giuseppe Verdi in 1877 as being perhaps the finest singer who had ever lived. Abraham Lincoln famously implored the singer to console him with the ballad after the loss of his son Willie to typhoid. The talisman of home offering comfort and protection in a time of mourning.

Oscar Wilde, a man famous, and sometimes infamous, for his use of words referenced Patti in his fiction.

On his tour of America the aesthete attended a performance by the singer as a closing entertainment of the Cincinnatti Opera Festival. Wilde was taken backstage to meet Adelina and the experience was to have a profound effect on the writer. He included references to Patti in his only novel “The Picture of Dorian Gray”, a strange kismet that seemed to foretell his impending destiny. After Wilde’s disgrace and downfall the country to offer Wilde refuge and ‘home’ was France, the

nation that offered Liberty in symbolic form to America. Paris would become his home and his final resting place. In the nineteenth century, Britain was not a place to offer ‘home sweet home’ to the homosexual.

In the latter part of her life, Patti resided in the Swansea valley in her retirement home at Craig y Nos, where she built her own theatre. She died in the Welsh castle, but her final resting place would be alongside her beloved Rossini in Père Lachaise, a Parisian locale she would share with Wilde after death.

These serendipitous events reflect the arbitrary possibilities of our social networks. The pervasive sentiment offered by this ballad has permeated generations and centuries and presents us with an idea that should make us reflect on how we connect with others, how we understand our place in the world, and how we generate discourse of belonging and otherness.

Yolanda del Amo Ni tan lejos, ni tan cerca Neither distant nor close Un archipiélago como un conjunto de islas que se encuentran cercanas entre sí. Ni tan lejos, ni tan cerca, aisladas y, a la vez, en relación. Hay relaciones que implican convivencias impuestas y, otras, en que estas son más bien escogidas —a pesar de que exista una presión social sobre lo que es más o menos adecuado hacer. Madres y padres e hijos, hermanos y hermanas, abuelos y nietos, noviazgos y matrimonios. La intimidad y cercanía en estas relaciones es evidente y, en aquellas donde la convivencia es una elección, la decisión de proyectarse en esa dirección es, muchas veces, un gran salto al vacío. Un momento de gran potencia y de gran fragilidad al mismo tiempo en el que los cuidados se hacen más necesarios que nunca para que la cercanía e intimidad de la que hablábamos no se convierta en rechazo o extrañamiento.

An archipelago: a group of islands that are clustered together, neither faraway nor close to each other, isolated yet connected. There are relationships in which coexistence is imposed and others in which it is chosen – though there may be social pressure here as to the most or least appropriate course of action.

Mothers and fathers and children; sisters and brothers; grandparents and grandchildren; engagements and marriages.

The intimacy and closeness of these relationships is obvious, and in those where coexistence follows a choice, a decision to move in that direction is, in many cases, a great leap into the unknown. It is a moment both of great power and great fragility in which more care than ever must be taken to ensure that the closeness and intimacy we speak of does not become rejection or estrangement.

Poised halfway between reality and fiction, Archipiélago – a photographic project by Yolanda del Amo – explores the interpersonal connections and disconnections of our closest relationships and how our need for closeness exists alongside our desire for individuality.

The photographer delves into the lives of friends and family, using what she sees in them and their surroundings as a raw material and adding a theatrical dimension through perspective and her role as a director. The relationship between the

people we see in the images is defined through the setting, which becomes a psychological extension of the characters and also speaks to us of the load imposed by gender, age and social class.

Amo’s work is staged in the sense that it is meticulously orchestrated and composed, but not without reality being used as a starting point. The surroundings she chooses already exist, but they are modified and dramatized without her ever resorting to sets built from scratch. In this respect, the artist enjoys a controlling role that allows her to create a narrative and condense the story into an image, leaving the viewer to complete the rest.

En abril de 1972, John Myers compró una cámara Gandolfi de gran formato y empezó a tomar fotografías. Entre ese mismo año y 1979 se centró en su alrededor más inmediato, documentando personas y edificios que podía alcanzar a una distancia razonable andando, es decir, el área de Stourbridge, en Inglaterra, su pueblo natal. Esta limitación geográfica venía también dada por el uso de la cámara Gandolfi, un dispositivo pesado y anacrónico en un momento en que cámaras de mucho menor tamaño circulaban en el mercado. El uso por parte de Myers de una cámara de placas condicionó su fotografía, los tiempos y los encuadres estaban, de algún modo, limitados por las posibilidades del medio escogido. La faceta fotográfica de Myers, quien reconocía inspirarse y tener influencias de fotógrafos como August Sander, Lewis Hine, Walker Evans, Eugene Atget o Diane Arbus, no duraría demasiado, puesto que en los años ochenta sus intereses viraron hacia la pintura. Un entorno gris Where all is grey In April 1972, John Myers bought a large-format Gandolfi camera and began taking photographs. In the seven years that followed he focused on his most immediate surroundings, documenting people and buildings within reasonable walking distance in his hometown of Stourbridge, in England’s West Midlands. That geographical limitation was also imposed on him by the Gandolfi, an unwieldy device that was an anachronism at a time when far smaller cameras were readily avail56

able on the market. Myers’ use of a plate camera conditioned his work, with exposure times and framing being somewhat restricted by the capabilities of his medium of choice. Myers, who pointed to August Sander, Lewis Hine, Walker Evans, Eugene Atget and Diane Arbus as his inspirations and influences, was not a photographer for long, turning his attention to painting in the 1980s. Even so, the photographs he took then continue to have an impact today and offer a valuable document of the

way of life and architecture in this part of England.

Taken as a whole, Myers’ work is a visual recording of the British suburbs, of the architecture and lifestyle of the middle class in the 1970s, a decade blighted by recession and rising unemployment.

The images, all of them black and white, reflect an atmosphere that is soulless and dreary, with the emptiness of the streets mirroring not so much a moment as an entire period of decay and decline.

Though only a selection of the series Houses is shown here, Myers’ work from

this period is also made up of portraits, photographs of interiors – of shops and houses – and images documenting the everyday lives and jobs of the people of Stourbridge. This entire body of work became known as Boring Photographs, a title that prompted Myers to comment: “The photographer Eve Arnold said, ‘It’s the hardest thing in the world to take the mundane and try to show how special it is.’ I think Eve Arnold was wrong and that it’s the hardest thing in the world to take the mundane and try to show how boring it is.”

I drive, I drive a lot…

Por dentro y por fuera, Todd Hido es un cazador de lugares, de momentos. Él los busca, y en su caza, deambula por las ciudades, las afueras, zonas residenciales, casas vacías unas veces y otras habitadas. Desde fuera solo una cerca, la casa como un bulto, como una ballena, como un monstruo informe, varado; las ventanas, sus ojos, a veces iluminados, a veces cerrados, nos dejan entrever un interior en el que la vida es de otra manera, realmente no importa mucho, estamos afuera, viendo lugares que cuesta encontrar. Un misterio y mil imágenes nos vienen a la cabeza, lugares misteriosos, pero con apariencia vulgar, nada especial. Como nuestras casas, esos lugares donde habita el terror, aunque a veces no lo sepamos; esos lugares que cerramos para que nadie pueda vernos. Cuando le preguntan cómo encuentra estas imágenes, simplemente responde “conduzco alrededor. Conduzco y conduzco y normalmente no encuentro nada que me parezca interesante. Pero entonces, algo llama mi atención. Algo que parece un poco fuera de lugar o tal vez un espacio vacío. A veces es una escena triste. Me gusta este tipo de cosas. Así que tomo mis fotos y a veces algunas son buenas. Y así sigo conduciendo, mirando y tomando fotografías.”

En otras series Hido entra en las casas, pero esa es otra historia, y lo que fotografía allí dentro pocas veces tiene que ver con las casas, por lo general tiene más que ver con sus habitantes. Pero en estas imágenes vemos esa otra cara de una casa, de un “hogar, dulce hogar”, porque no todas las casas son un dulce hogar. Muchas ni siquiera son un hogar.

Todd Hido is a hunter through and through. He hunts for places and moments, and in his efforts to track them down he wanders through cities, suburbs and residential areas, stumbling upon houses that are sometimes empty, sometimes inhabited. From the outside, there is only a fence, behind which the house sits like a protrusion, like a whale even, a stranded formless monster. The windows – the eyes – are sometimes lit up, sometimes closed, giving us a glimpse of an interior in which life is different. Not that it really matters much; we remain on the outside, looking in at a place that is hard to find. A sense of mystery and a thousand images come to mind, mysterious places, but with a vulgar appearance, nothing out of the ordinary. They are like our homes, those places where terror resides, even if we sometimes aren’t aware of it; the places we lock ourselves away in so no one can see us. When asked how he finds these images, Hido simply answers “I drive around. I drive and drive and usually I don’t find anything I find interesting. But then, something catches my eye, something that seems a bit out of place or maybe even an empty space.

Sometimes it's a sad scene. I like that sort of thing. So I take some pictures and sometimes some of them are good. And so I keep driving, looking and taking pictures.”

In other series Hido enters houses, but that’s another story. What he photographs there rarely has anything to do with houses; usually it has more to do with their inhabitants. But in these images, we see another side of these houses, the “home sweet home” side, because not every house is a sweet home. Many are not even a home.

Empecé el proyecto Fringe aproximadamente en 2007, aunque en aquel momento no era consciente de ello. Partí hacia China con una nueva cámara de gran formato y una beca del Mondriaan Fund. Siempre había querido ir a explorar las megalópolis chinas, dejarme llevar por la inabarcable ciudad, la monotonía del hormigón y las miles y miles de ventanas mirador que sugieren vida con toques de individualidad. Cuanto más trabajaba allí, más me atraían los límites de la ciudad, la frontera entre lo cultural y lo natural. Es una extraña yuxtaposición de, por un lado, la arquitectura lúgubre y sin pretensiones que alberga a millones de personas y, por otro, el paisaje natural que cede el espacio a la ciudad y surge en otros lugares.

Cuanto más lo miraba, menos diferenciaba los dos mundos. El enfoque se desplazó de la perspectiva humana a la perspectiva del objeto. Una vez que me desvinculé de ese contexto social, me quedé con meras formas, estructuras y horizontes, lo que me permitió mirar y contemplar plenamente esas estructuras, trascendiendo el silencio y la alienante belleza.

Since the cities that exist diverge in varying degrees from the norm, I need only foresee the exceptions to the norm and calculate the most probable combinations.’

‘I have also thought of a model city from which I deduce all the others’ Marco answered, ‘It is a city made only of exceptions, exclusions, incongruities, contradictions. If such a city is the most improbable, by reducing the number of elements, we increase the probability that the city really exists. So I have only to subtract exceptions from my model, and in whatever direction I proceed, I will arrive at one of the cities which, always as an exception, exist. I started the project Fringe roughly in 2007, although not aware of this at the time. Fresh with a new large format camera and a grant from the Mondriaan Fund I set off to China. I always wanted to go and explore the Chinese megalopolis, indulging myself in the never-ending city, the concrete monotony and the thousands upon thousands of bay windows suggesting life with hints of individuality. The more I worked there, the more I was drawn to the edges of the city, the border between the cultural and natural. It’s a strange juxtaposition of on the one hand the bleak and unpretentious architecture, housing the millions and on the other hand, the natural landscape giving way to the city, while popping up in other places. The more I looked at it, the less I differentiated between the two worlds.

The focus shifted from the human perspective to the object perspective. Once undone from that social context, I was left with mere shapes, structures and horizons, making it possible to fully look and gaze at these structures, transcending into silence and alienating beauty.

La relación que guardamos con nuestra casa es mucho más que una convivencia, de alguna manera nos pertenecemos y cuidamos mutuamente. Es algo que pasa también entre las parejas que llevan mucho tiempo viviendo juntos. Incluso entre el perro y su amo. Nuestra casa se convierte en nuestro retrato, responde no solamente a nuestra imagen perfecta, esa que queremos proyectar hacia el exterior, sino a esa realidad subterránea que nos corre por las venas. Es un sonido que solo oímos nosotros. Es una parte viva de nosotros. Cada casa se convierte en el retrato de aquel que vive en ella. Representa nuestro gusto, pero más que eso, muestra nuestros defectos, nuestras carencias, nuestros prejuicios y nuestros miedos.

Somos nosotros. No es una película de terror en la que nuestra casa nos posee, teóricamente las poseemos nosotros, o tal vez solo aparentemente. Tal vez, si nos poseen a nosotros, sí que sea una película de terror. Y en cada casa, cada uno de nosotros tenemos un rincón favorito, nuestro sillón predilecto; leemos aquí pero para estar hablando con alguien elegimos el sofá de allá, y en la mesa si no comemos en “nuestro sitio” nos sentimos extraños y desplazados. Y nuestras bibliotecas, nuestros armarios, son nuestros gestos, son como la forma que

The relationship we have with our home is about much more than just living together; in a way we belong to each other and care for each other. This also holds true for couples who have been living together for a long time and even for dogs and their masters.

Over time, our house becomes our portrait. Not only does it perfectly reflect our image, the one we want to project to the outside world, but it also reflects the underlying truth that runs through our veins. It is a sound that only we can hear, a living part of us. Each house becomes the portrait of the person who lives in it. It represents our taste. More than that, however, it also reveals our flaws, our shortcomings, our prejudices and our fears. It is who we are. It is not like a horror movie, where our house possesses us. Theoretically, we possess DOSSIER

Y así, cada imagen de Una casa es un texto, la serie de Amparo Garrido, se llama Hilda y Antonio, o Nancy y Armando, o Juan, o Francisco, como las personas que viven en ellas.

Porque en realidad son retratos escenográficos, ellos y ellas no están en la imagen, pero son la imagen. Si la fotografía representa lo que muestra, estas imágenes son ellos, estas fotografías les representan a cada uno de ellos. Y, como no puede ser de otra manera, estos retratos como todos los retratos de la historia tienen también algo, tal vez mucho, del retratista, de aquel que mira y elige el gesto, el ángulo, la luz, hacia dónde dirige la mirada… de aquel, aquella en este caso, que sabe mirar y ver.

Porque Amparo Garrido sabe mucho sobre las casas, y sobre el retrato, y estas fotografías son los retratos de algunos de sus amigos. Reconocibles y diferentes, únicos como cada uno de nosotros, y como cada una de nuestras casas.

it, or at least that is how it seems – if it did possess us, then that would really be a horror film! We all have a favourite spot in our house, a favourite armchair for example, where we like to read. If we want to chat to someone, though, we sit on the sofa. As for the dinner table, if we don’t eat in “our” chair we feel strange and displaced. Our bookshelves and cupboards are like our expressions.

They are like the way we push back our hair, the way we smile with satisfaction, the way our face clouds over with anger. They are just like the plants we choose and which survive in spite of everything.

Every picture in Amparo Garrido’s series Una casa es un texto (A House is a Text), is named after the people who live in the houses they depict: Hilda and Antonio, Nancy and Armando, Juan, Francisco… In reality they are scenographic portraits. The subjects are not in the image; they are the image. If photography is supposed to represent what it shows, these images are those subjects; these photographs represent each of them. And, inevitably, these portraits, like every portrait through time, also possess something (if not a lot) of the portrait painter; the one who looks and chooses the gesture, the angle, the light, where to direct the gaze, the one who knows how to look and observe.

After all, Amparo Garrido knows a lot about houses, not to mention portraiture. These photographs are portraits of some of her friends. Recognisable and different, they are as unique as every one of us, as unique as our houses.

Annette LeMay Burke Memory Building El tiempo lo cambia todo. Ese tópico adquirió una dolorosa relevancia para mí cuando mi padre y mi madre fallecieron con pocos meses de diferencia, lo que alteró para siempre mi estructura familiar. El amor incondicional que me habían mostrado durante toda mi vida había desaparecido. No me quedaban más que sus posesiones físicas y los recuerdos de nuestra vida juntos. Como soy fotógrafa, me sentí atraída por cierto grupo de artículos que habían dejado atrás: un archivo bien organizado de fotos familiares, la máxima manifestación tangible de los recuerdos.

En esta serie, proyecté digitalmente aquellas típicas fotografías familiares sobre las superficies de la casa de mi infancia y volví a fotografiar la escena. Mediante la superposición de las fotos del pasado a las paredes del presente, desenterré sesenta años de recuerdos arraigados e intenté captar la evanescente historia familiar que solía impregnar aquella casa.

La casa de mis padres en California es un ejemplo de las viviendas de estilo rancho construidas en los vecindarios nuevos que surgieron por todos los Estados Unidos tras la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Mis padres vivieron allí desde que se casaron hasta que murieron, desde que tenían veintitantos años hasta pasados los ochenta. La mayoría de los muebles de estilo Early American que compraron permanecieron en la vivienda durante toda su vida.

Aunque la casa y la estabilidad de mis padres constituyeron una base sólida para mi crianza, el hogar fue también una piedra angular a la que pudieron aferrarse durante sus últimos años, cuando la demencia y la pérdida de memoria les privaron de muchos otros aspectos de su vida. La elaboración de los cuadros proyectados hizo que los recuerdos se volvieran más reales para mí, me consoló durante el duelo y creó un legado pictórico familiar para las generaciones futuras. Dadas las numerosas experiencias formativas arraigadas y entretejidas en esta vivienda, despedirme de ella supuso despedirme también de mis padres. Aun cuando se encalaron las habitaciones para recibir a los nuevos propietarios, mis recuerdos seguían resonando entre aquellas paredes.

Time changes everything. That cliché became painfully relevant for me after my parents died within a few months of each other, forever changing my family structure. The unconditional love I received from them throughout my life was now gone. I was left with only their physical possessions and my memories of our lives together. Being a photographer, I gravitated towards one group of items they left behind – a well-organized archive of family photos, the ultimate tangible manifestation of memories.

In this series, I digitally projected those vernacular family photographs

onto the surfaces of my childhood home and re-photographed the scene. By superimposing the photos from the past onto the present-day walls, I unearthed sixty years of engrained memories and tried to capture my family’s vanishing history that once permeated this house.

My parents’ California home exemplifies the post World War II ranch homes built in newly created neighborhoods across the United States. They lived in this house from the day they were married until their deaths, from their 20s to their 80s. Much of the Early American style furniture they bought remained in the house throughout their lives.

While the home and my parents’ stability provided a solid foundation for my upbringing, it also provided a trustworthy touchstone for them in their final years as dementia and memory loss robbed them of so many other aspects of their lives. Constructing the projected tableaus made the memories more substantive for me, provided solace for my grieving and created a family pictorial legacy for future generations. With so many formative experiences rooted and intertwined within this building, saying goodbye to it was also saying goodbye to my parents. Even as the rooms were literally whitewashed in preparation for new owners, my memories continued to resonate within the walls.

Para todos aquellos que piensan que la fotografía solo puede ofrecer una imagen de lo que existe delante de la cámara, de una realidad que lo debe explicar todo en sí misma, las imágenes de Laura Blight pueden suponer un problema. Porque ella básicamente fotografía lo que no se puede ver. Los objetos que aparecen en sus fotografías solo son los restos, son las huellas de lo que ya no está, lo que una vida dejó a su paso. Esta serie del 2010 está basada en lo que se conoce como los servicios de limpieza de casas para su venta. La mayoría de los propietarios de las casas que aparecen en la serie fallecieron. Eran personas mayores, que vivían solos, y solo dejan a su paso las huellas de su estancia allí. Nada especial, solo muebles viejos, pequeños recuerdos que no significan nada para nosotros, pero que generan una extraña sensación de vacío, de soledad.

Cosas que ya no le importan a nadie, espacios que fueron testigos y compañeros de sus vidas, que han quedado silenciosos y abandonados, en un lugar fuera del tiempo. En estos lugares ya nada tiene sentido, todo se ha quedado colgado en el tiempo tras la ausencia de su propietario. Como un perro sobre la tumba de su amo. Ahora, una vez que nosotros salgamos de estas casas, una vez que la fotógrafa acabe su trabajo, se vaciarán, se limpiarán, se pintarán… y serán otros espacios nuevos, otra casa que habitarán otras personas y que generarán otras experiencias, otros recuerdos, otros objetos, en un ciclo paralelo al de la vida.

Pero para aquellos otros que crean que la fotografía nos habla no solo de lo que se ve sino de lo que no se puede ver, estas imágenes dejan un triste regusto a pérdida, a muerte, a soledad, un olor a naftalina, la pena de ver esas sillas sobre la cama, el papel arrancado de las paredes, esas llaves junto a unos bastones que ya no encajan en ninguna mano, que ya no son necesarios… un antiguo mobiliario convertido ahora en trastos viejos. Nos hablan del tiempo que todo lo devora, del final de todos los sueños. Nos hablan de lo que es una casa, y de lo queda en ella cuando nosotros ya no estamos.

For anyone who thinks that photographs are only a reflection of what exists in front of the camera, of a self-explanatory reality, Laura Blight’s images can be somewhat problematic. She essentially photographs what cannot be seen. The objects that appear in her photographs are merely remains, traces of what is no longer there, of what a life has left behind it. This 2010 series is based on house clearances in preparation for their sale. Most of the owners of the houses featured in the series are deceased.

Elderly people who lived alone, they left nothing behind them but traces of their time there. There is nothing out of the ordinary in them, just some old furniture and small keepsakes. Though they mean nothing to us, they give rise to a strange feeling of emptiness, of loneliness. They are objects that no one cares about anymore, rooms that bore witness to and were part of their lives, that have been left silent and abandoned, as if lost in time. Nothing makes sense in these places; everything has been left frozen in time after the owner’s death, like a dog lingering by its master’s grave.

Once we leave these houses, once the photographer has finished her work, they will be emptied, cleaned, painted and become new spaces, another house inhabited by other people, generating other experiences, other memories, other objects, in a parallel cycle to life.

But for those others who believe that photographs reveal not only what can be seen but also what cannot, these images leave a sad aftertaste of loss, death and loneliness. A smell of mothballs lingers, a feeling of melancholy is aroused by chairs on a bed, paper torn away from walls, keys lying next to walking sticks that will no longer be held in hands, that are no longer needed… old furniture that has now become old junk.

Blight’s photos remind us of the passage of time, which devours everything, including our dreams. They show us what a house is, and what remains in it once we have gone.

Jeffrey Stockbridge Homegoing Homegoing es un proyecto fotográfico y un libro sobre la crisis de viviendas abandonadas de Filadelfia y sobre la memoria de las personas que solían habitar aquellas estructuras ruinosas.

Entre 2004 y 2008, me colé en cientos de casas abandonadas de Filadelfia, Pensilvania, y fotografié el interior con una cámara analógica 4x5 usando solo la luz disponible. Las imágenes se tomaron a primera hora de la mañana y a última de la tarde y en la calidad de la luz de los interiores en penumbra se aprecia una presencia espiritual que evoca la vida de sus antiguos ocupantes. Por aquel entonces, Filadelfia contaba con más de sesenta mil viviendas vacías. Yo me preguntaba por qué se habrían quedado abandonadas aquellas casas y qué habría sido de las personas que vivían allí. Aunque esas preguntas siguen sin tener una respuesta clara, podemos aprender mucho si miramos con atención. Las habitaciones que fotografié estaban repletas de recuerdos de sus antiguos ocupantes. Había cartas viejas y fotografías familiares desperdigadas. Objetos importantes que debían ser conservados pendían de un hilo, amenazados por las estructuras semiderruidas que ocupaban. Todos los días, cuando la luz de sol penetra en el interior de esas viviendas abandonadas, su presencia me recuerda la conexión fundamental que existe entre el ser humano y su refugio.

Homegoing is a photographic project and book about Philadelphia’s abandoned housing crisis and the memory of those people who once called these dilapidated structures home.

From 2004-2008, I snuck into hundreds of abandoned homes in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and photographed the interiors with a 4x5 film camera using only available light.

Photographing in the early morning and late afternoon, the quality of light inside the dark interiors has a spiritual presence, evoking the lives of past occupants. At the time, Philadelphia was home to over 60,000 vacant properties. I wondered why had these homes been abandoned and what happened to the people who had lived there?

The answers to these questions remain elusive yet there is much we can learn from taking a closer look. The rooms I photographed were drenched in the memories of their previous occupants.

Old letters and family photographs lay scattered about. Items of significance meant to be preserved were hanging in the balance, threatened by the crumbling structures they occupied. Each day as sunlight penetrates the interior of these abandoned structures, its presence reminds me of the fundamental connection between a human being and their shelter.

Guadalupe Arriegue Buenos Aires, Argentina, 1986

Multiverso, el proyecto de Guadalupe Arriegue, “nace de la propiocepción de sus alergias” y consiste en un estudio sobre la observación de formas de la naturaleza a través de fotografías. Se trata de una exploración, a través de imágenes fotográficas, del cuerpo a distintos niveles: micro y macro. La serie se conforma de fotografías y fotomontajes realizados mediante imágenes propias y apropiadas.

Las imágenes de Multiverso crean dibujos rizomáticos-dendríticos que nos acercan a las formas de distintos vegetales y minerales gracias a diversos instrumentos ópticos y de creación de imágenes.

Guadalupe Arriegue es artista y poeta visual. Recientemente ha recibido la Beca de Creación del Fondo Metropolitano de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires, Argentina (2021); la Beca de Literatura del Museo de Arte Latinoamericano MALBA, Argentina (2020); la Beca del Fondo Nacional de las Artes, Argentina (2019); o la Beca de creación BFoto de Barbastro, España (2018), entre otras.

A project by Guadalupe Arriegue, Multiverso “is born out of the proprioception of her allergies”. It is a study of the observation of natural forms through photography, an exploration, through photographic images, of the body on different levels: micro and macro. The series is made up of photographs and photomontages created from her own images and those appropriated from others.

The images found in Multiverso create rhizomatic/dendritic drawings that recall — through the use of optical instruments and the creation of images — vegetable and mineral forms.

Guadalupe Arriegue is an artist and visual poet. She was recently awarded the Creative Scholarship from the City of Buenos Aires’ Metropolitan Fund, Argentina (2021); the Literature Scholarship from the Museum of Latin American Art (MALBA), Argentina (2020); the National Arts Fund Scholarship, Argentina (2019); and Barbastro BFoto Creative Scholarship, Spain (2018), among others.

Cuando el artista se encontró cuatro medias lunas en la base de las córneas, creyó que iba a perder la vista. La preocupación le hizo acordarse de Derek Jarman, pues el azul era lo único que Jarman podía ver antes de quedarse ciego. En las fotografías que forman parte de esta serie, un mundo imaginario lleno de incertidumbres se iba erigiendo al mismo tiempo que el artista se escondía entre sombras insondables, incomunicado y aislado del mundo. Más tarde, cuando Liu estaba terminando el proyecto, comprendió que la persecución del color azul no era más que un ajuste de la distancia entre el mundo y él y, en el proceso, regresó de alguna forma al mundo. Por aquel entonces, Shuwei estuvo leyendo a Giorgio Agamben, que explicaba el porqué de la oscuridad de nuestros tiempos, y encontró la forma de enfrentarse a ella: “Percibir, en la oscuridad del presente, esta luz que lucha en vano por alcanzarnos; el pasado, tocado por esta sombra, adquirió la habilidad de dar respuesta a la oscuridad del presente”.

Liu Shuwei es fotógrafo y en la actualidad vive y trabaja en Shanghái, China. Recientemente ha sido finalista en el British Journal of Photography (2019) y en el Photovogue Festival (2018).

“Blue is darkness made visible”.

Derek Jarman Visible Darkness is the second part of Liu Shuwei’s Blue trilogy. When he discovered four moon-like crescents at the base of his corneas, he thought he was going to lose sight. The anxiety reminded Liu of Derek Jarman as blue was the only thing he could see before he went blind. In the photographs part of this series, an imaginary world full of uncertainties was being built at the same time that Shuwei was hiding in deep shadows, disconnected, and isolated from the world. Later on when he was finishing the project, he realized that chasing the color blue, turned out to be adjusting the distance between the world and him, and by doing so, he somehow returned to the world in a way. At that time, Liu read Giorgio Agamben explaining the reason for the darkness in our time, and he found a way to deal with it.“To perceive, in the darkness of the present, this light that strives to reach us but can not; the past touched by this shadow acquired the ability to respond to the darkness of the now.”

Liu Shuwei is a photographer that currently lives and works in Shanghai, China.

He has recently been finalist of the British Journal of Photography (2019) and the Photovogue Festival (2018).

Eduardo Subías Huesca, España, 1957

La serie Botánica es una indagación sobre el lenguaje fotográfico vinculado a la naturaleza y a una concepción animista de la misma.

Una interpretación libre de los valores más positivos y rescatables de aquellas épocas remotas en las que la naturaleza ocupaba el lugar central del pensamiento mágico del hombre y era, por ese motivo, temida, reverenciada y celebrada. Realizada en distintas localizaciones de la península Ibérica, en aquellos bosques fluviales que aún hoy conservan vestigios de su arcaico pasado, Eduardo Subías alterna este proyecto de largo recorrido, con la finalización de una nueva propuesta ambientada en la ciudad de Barcelona.

A lo largo de su trayectoria, Eduardo Subías ha expuesto en instituciones destacadas como el Círculo de Bellas Artes, Madrid (1983), La Virreina Centre de la Imatge, Barcelona (2011), el MACBA, Barcelona (2012) o el Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid (2015).

Bótanica is a series that explores photographic language as it relates to nature and to its animistic understanding of itself. It is a free interpretation of the most positive and respectable values of those distant times when nature was central to man’s magical thinking and was, as a result, feared, revered, respected and celebrated. A long-term project, it has been created in different locations on the Iberian peninsula, in those river forests where traces of its ancient past can still be found. In the meantime, Subías is also putting the finishing touches to a new venture set in the city of Barcelona.

During the course of his career, Eduardo Subías has exhibited at a number of leading art institutions, among them the Círculo de Bellas Artes, Madrid (1983); La Virreina Centre de la Imatge, Barcelona (2011); MACBA, Barcelona (2012); and the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid (2015).

De febrero de 2018 a diciembre de 2019, Rebecca Unz estuvo trabajando en la serie Sensibelchen, de la que forman parte los retratos aquí recogidos. Las imágenes se caracterizan, en particular, por una cuidada iluminación, que parece modelar los rostros de los y las jóvenes sobre fondos en su mayoría neutrales y difusos. La serie de imágenes sigue una escala que va de un tono cálido a uno frío y, de este modo, remite a un espectro de sensibilidades y encuentros distintos. La atención se centra en las personas, su mirada y sus respectivas expresiones faciales. Las imágenes también recogen rasgos individuales, como el peinado, las joyas o el tocado, que revelan algún detalle acerca de los gustos de quienes los llevan. En los retratos se ve a jóvenes de la misma generación que muestran una preferencia común por un estilo musical determinado, aunque todos ellos parecen tener actitudes y expresiones muy diferenciadas. Con este trabajo, la artista ganó el premio August Sander 2020.

Rebecca Unz se dedica a la ilustración concreta y teórica de personas, mientras proyecta su propia imagen en los demás de manera intuitiva. Modifica con frecuencia su lenguaje visual, puesto que sus intenciones con respecto al retrato varían de un proyecto a otro: de hacer hincapié en los raperos a utilizar a las personas como lienzos en blanco para sus experimentos fotográficos. Unz concibe su obra más como una construcción de ideas que como una imagen de la realidad.

From February 2018 to December 2019, Rebecca Unz worked on the series Sensibelchen, which the submitted portraits are part of. The portraits are characterized in particular by a well-thoughtout lighting, which seems to model the faces of the young men and women against mostly neutral, only vague backgrounds. The series of images follows a scale from a warm to a cold tone and thus refers to a spectrum of different sensitivities and encounters.

The focus is on the individual, their gaze and the respective facial expression. Individual features such as hairstyles, jewelry or headgear, which reveal something about the tastes of the wearer, are also included in the picture. In the portraits one encounters young people of the same generation and a common preference for a style of music, and yet everyone appears very individual in attitude and expression. Unz won the August Sander Award 2020 with this work.

Rebecca Unz is occupied with the concrete and theoretical illustration of individuals, while she intuitively projects her self-image on others. Regularly changing her visual language, her intentions to portray shift from project to project — from emphasizing with rappers to using individuals as blank canvases for her photographic experiments. Unz understands her work less as an image of reality and more as a construct of ideas.

“Esto es lo que tengo que hacer ahora con mi vida. Cuando empezó esta pandemia en 2020, perdí el control, como le pasó a la gente por todo el mundo. Hablé con mis padres más que nunca y pasé con ellos gran parte de mi tiempo.

Busqué fotos familiares antiguas. Estuve caminando por donde vivieron mis difuntos abuelos sin dejar de hacer fotografías. Después, intenté vincular el presente con el pasado. Fue una especie de movimiento espaciotemporal, como si estuviera volviendo donde había estado mi alma. Había recuerdos cargados de amor y tristeza.

El pasado abril, mi padre dijo: ‘Este año las flores de los cerezos están muy feas’. No pude evitar sentir la muerte de las flores de cerezo desparramadas. Los aviones de combate tienen esas flores dibujadas y la canción militar dice así: ‘Como somos flores, estamos condenadas a caer. Caigamos magníficamente por el país’.

Mi abuelo combatió en la guerra del Pacífico. Volvió y trajo al mundo a la hija que me trajo al mundo a mí. A mí me parece un milagro. Hay infinidad de razones por las que no nací aquí”.

“This is what I have to do now with my life. When this pandemic began in 2020, I lost control like many other people around the world. I talked with my parents more than ever and shared almost all my time with them.

I searched for photos of my family in the past. I walked where my late grandparents lived and kept taking pictures.

Then I tried to connect the present and the past. It was a kind of spatiotemporal movement as if I went back to where my soul had been. There were memories full of love and sadness.

This April, my father said, ‘This year's cherry blossoms don't look beautiful at all’. I couldn't help feeling the death from the scattered cherry blossoms. Cherry blossoms are drawn on the fighters, and the military song says, ‘Since we are flowers, we are doomed to fall. Let us fall magnificently for the country’.

My grandfather went to the Pacific War. He came back and gave birth to the daughter who gave birth to me. I think it's a miracle. There are countless reasons why I wasn't born here”.

Kai Yokoyama es fotógrafo, vive en Tokio (Japón) y estudió en la Tokyo College of Photography. Obtuvo el primer puesto en la categoría de series de viajes de LensCulture (2020). En 2021, Yokoyama ha sido premiado por su obra en el Helsinki Photo Festival, ha sido finalista de los premios Kolga Tbilisi Photo, Encontros da Imagem Discovery y Portrait of Humanity y ha recibido la mentoría de Carolyn Drake en Magnum Photos, entre otras cosas.

Kai Yokoyama is a photographer based in Tokyo, Japan who completed his studies at Tokyo College of Photography. He won the first place in the LensCulture/Journeys series category (2020).
