La invención de la pintura Rosa Olivares

La invención de las cosas no sucede nunca en un solo instante mágico. La invención de las cosas, como la propia invención de la vida, viene sucediendo constantemente desde el inicio del mundo. Todo se está continuamente inventando y reinventando. Creamos cada gesto, cada sensación, cada vez que lo sentimos, cada vez que los realizamos. Por eso la pintura sigue viva, por eso y porque la pintura de hoy no es la misma que la pintura del siglo XVIII, ni que la pintura de las cuevas rupestres. Pinturas inventadas en cada momento de la historia que fue necesario volver a inventarse la pintura, tal vez no el arte. El arte es un concepto tan abstracto que está sujeto a los caprichos cambiantes y volátiles de mercado, instituciones e intelectuales sin metas más lejanas que el horizonte de las ciudades en las que viven temporalmente. La pintura es otra cosa, la pintura siempre fue algo necesario y por eso no muere, se transforma, se reinventa. Continuamente está empezando.

EXIT es una publicación que solamente trata de fotografía, y puede parecer que esta afirmación admirativa tiene poca relación con la foto. Sin embargo es todo lo contrario. En este número el centro sobre el que todos giramos sigue siendo la imagen fotográfica, pero el movimiento viene impulsado por la mirada de los pintores.

De unos pintores que están, han estado, inventando la pintura con una mirada diferente. Que han sabido rege-

nerar una forma de hacer, de mirar y de ser. La pintura siempre fue una práctica en la que la mano era el motor, generaba la acción y la realidad de esa acción. Se ha hablado del cuerpo, del gesto, de la fuerza del pintor, pero un día la mano cedió su papel motriz, el rol del director de escena, a la mirada, al ojo. Cuando hablamos del inicio de la fotografía, de las razones que llevaron a su creación, nos resulta evidente su papel esencial de herramienta colaborativa. La fotografía es una herramienta esencial en la ciencia, en la investigación, en la documentación de la vida cotidiana, de los cambios sociales, pero también lo es en el conocimiento de las plantas, de la naturaleza, de la realidad de un mundo inaprensible.

Una herramienta colaborativa y en ocasiones sustitutiva, como le ha sucedido al dibujo, al sketch que documentaba un hecho, como las acciones bélicas, o a la ilustración periodística. La fotografía ha venido para demostrarnos la grandeza de la cosa más ínfima, para que comprendamos que bajo una supuesta superficie existe un mundo desconocido. En profundidad y extensión, con la fotografía se ha iniciado una búsqueda interminable del individuo, de su mundo y de sus condicionantes sociales, físicos y morales. Pero la fotografía en manos de los pintores alcanza una dimensión diferente, ya que reúne las características de la fotografía y las esencias de la pintura. Produce unas imágenes que son esencialmente pintura pero con el cuerpo de una fotografía.

Todos los pintores que aparecen en las siguientes páginas, y otros muchos que no están en ellas, han hecho un viaje de la pintura a la fotografía de ida y vuelta. Todos son pintores. Todos se han servido de la fotografía para extender su mirada, para profundizar en su pintura, formal o conceptualmente. Cada uno de ellos fotografía lo que ve, pero el resultado, lo que el espectador ve, es lo mismo que vemos en sus pinturas. Realmente no hay apenas diferencia entre sus pinturas y sus fotografías, unas alimentan a las otras, se justifican como un experimento en la investigación científica, tienen la lógica de las cosas que suceden porque no pueden ser de otra manera, como la manzana que cae por su propio peso desde la rama del árbol hasta el suelo. Sucede algo parecido con los fotógrafos que pintan, que de repente nos sitúan ante sus lienzos esperando que veamos sólo pinturas, pero nosotros seguimos viendo las calles de las ciudades de sus fotografías; el color oscuro y profundo de la soledad de los lugares por los que pasearon su cámara vuelven a aflorar en los cielos brumoso, manchados con la sangre que tantas veces fotografiaran. El pintor aporta con su mirada otro tipo de catalogación del mundo. Cada artista, en definitiva, ve lo que quiere ver, o mejor dicho: lo que no puede evitar ver. Ve a través de su propia creatividad, ve, siempre, partes fragmentadas de su obra, de una obra tan inmensa que seguramente no lograra acabarla en vida.

Podría parecer que los pintores más jóvenes han incluido la imagen fotográfica en su forma de hacer pintura como algo inevitable, como un elemento más del espíritu de los tiempos en los que les ha tocado vivir. Pero no es así, porque no son tantos los pintores que han dado ese paso hacia el mundo de la fotografía.

Ese impulso viene como algo inevitable en su forma de hacer. Al igual que para otros el mundo del comic, de la animación, del cine, conforma parte de su forma de hacer. Pero en el caso que estudiamos en este número de EXIT no se trata de como el pintor incluye en sus pinturas la aportación fotográfica, no hemos recurrido a pintores que incluyan en sus lienzos imágenes foto-

gráficas. Son pintores que han construido una obra paralela, una pequeña construcción fotográfica que nada tiene que ver en el aspecto formal con sus pinturas, que en las más de las ocasiones no ha salido a la luz sino mucho después de realizarse, bien porque ha sido una especie de complemento vital, realizado en viajes, al margen de su trabajo como pintores, hasta que un día se han reencontrado con sus pinturas en otro nivel de confrontación. O bien, porque fueron imágenes creadas como herramientas de apoyo para sus pinturas, pero que de repente crecieron conformándose como obras paralelas, con fuerza y autonomía. Otros, sin embargo, y no precisamente los más jóvenes, han tenido desde el inicio de su obra a la fotografía como una fiel compañera, en la forma de mirar, en la concepción de la imagen, en la construcción de toda una iconología, de toda una historia personal de la que la pintura ha sido la protagonista principal pero nunca en un monólogo.

Por unas razones o por otras, después de ver las fotografías que han creado a través de años todos estos pintores podremos comprender mucho mejor sus pinturas. A partir de aquí sabremos darles un significado más profundo a gran parte de unas obras que creíamos conocer sin fisuras. Veremos una dimensión nueva en sus pinturas y seremos más capaces, también, de comprender mejor la importancia de la fotografía como creadora de lenguajes autónomos y característicos.

Entenderemos finalmente, que sea la mano, el ojo, la forma o el significado, la creación artística no habla una sola lengua, y que todo lo que rodea al artista sirve para alimentar un trabajo que sólo depende de cada individuo, de su percepción y de su capacidad para, utilizando cualquier herramienta que tenga a su alcance, cuantas más herramientas mejor, consiga cambiar nuestra percepción de la realidad y del mundo que nos rodea, de nosotros mismos en definitiva. Y de que, pintura y fotografía cabalgan juntas desde hace mucho tiempo, y no solamente en un horizonte pop o hiperrealista, sino en todo el Universo del arte actual.

The Invention of Painting Rosa Olivares

Things are not invented in a magical instant.

Things—like the creation of life itself—have been in continuous creation since the beginning of time. Everything is constantly being invented and reinvented. We create each gesture, each sensation, every time that we feel or make it. That is why painting remains alive. For that and because painting, as we understand it today, is not the same as 18th Century paintings or cave paintings, which were invented in a specific moment in history when painting—although maybe not art—demanded reinvention. Art is such an abstract concept that it is subject to the volatile caprices of the market, institutions and intellectuals with goals limited to the horizons of the cities where they temporarily reside. Painting is something else, painting has always been necessary and that is why it doesn’t die, it transforms and reinvents itself. It is constantly beginning.

EXIT is a photography magazine and in that framework, this statement of admiration may seem irrelevant. However, it is quite the contrary. This issue continues to focus on the photographic image even though the perspective is guided by the painters’ eye.

These painters have and continue to invent painting from a unique viewpoint. They have been able to regenerate new ways of doing, looking and being.

Historically, painting has been a practice propelled by the hand, which produced the action and the reality of this action. The body, gesture and strength of the painter have all been discussed. But one day, the hand passed the baton to the eye, to the gaze.

When we talk about the beginning of photography and the reasons that led to its invention, its role as an essential collaborative tool is undeniable. Photography is an important tool in science, in research, and in the documentation of everyday life and social changes. It also aids in the understanding of plants, nature and the reality of an inapprehensible world. It is a collaborative and occasional stopgap tool, like sketches used to document warlike actions, or journalistic illustrations.

Photography emerged to demonstrate us the greatness of even the most negligible thing, so that we may understand that an unknown world is concealed beneath the surface. Deeply and extensively, photography has initiated a neverending search of the individual, its world and its social, physical and moral conditions. However, photography in the hands of painters reaches a whole new dimension since it merges photographic characteristics with the essence of painting. The results are images that look like paintings but are materialised on a photographic support.

Every painter included in this issue (and many others not included), have embarked on a round trip from painting to photography. They are all painters.

All of them have used photography to extend their perspective and expand the formal and conceptual aspects of their paintings. Each one of them photographs what they see but the result, that which is shown to the spectators, is the same as what is captured in their canvases.

There are barely any differences between their paintings and their photographs, they feed on each other and are justified like an experiment in scientific research. They hold the logic of things because they can’t exist any other way, like how the weight of an apple makes it fall from the tree onto the ground.

Something similar happens with photographers who paint. They place us in front of the canvas urging us to only see their paintings, yet we can’t help but recognise the city streets they capture in their photographs. The dark and profound colour of solitude inscribed in the places through which their cameras passed by resurface in the foggy skies, stained with the blood they photographed so many times. The painter’s eye provides a different way of cataloguing the world. Ultimately, artists see what they want to see, or in other words: what they can’t avoid seeing. They see through the lens of their own creativity. They always see fragments of their work, and oeuvre so big that probably won’t be finished in a lifetime.

It may seem like younger painters inevitably include photographic images in their work, like children of their time and culture. But that is not the case since not so many painters have leaped into the world of photography. This impulse emerges like something unavoidable in their way of doing things, just like for others the world of comics, animation or cinema is an intrinsic part of their activity. But this issue of EXIT doesn’t explore the ways in which painters incorporate photography into their practices; these are not painters who use photographic images

in their canvases. Instead, they are painters who have developed a parallel body of work, a small photographic construction unrelated with the formal aspects of their paintings. Many times, these works see the light a long time after been created, either because it was a sort of vital complement, developed during trips in the sidelines of their painter careers, until one day, the paintings are confronted from a different standpoint. Or because they were images created as support tools for their paintings, but suddenly evolved as parallel works with their own strength and autonomy. Others however—and not necessarily young artists—have always embraced photography as a faithful companion that influences their way of looking and conceiving an image, an element present in the construction of an entire iconology, of an entire personal history in which painting is the main character but never of a monologue.

For one reason or another, the pictures taken by all these painters along the years will give us clues to better understanding their paintings. They will shed light on the meaning on many of their pieces we thought we knew completely. Their paintings will gain a new dimension and we will comprehend photography’s essential capacity of creating its own particular an autonomous language.

We will finally understand that whether emerging from the hand, the eye, the form or the meaning, artistic creation doesn’t speak just one language, and that everything that surrounds an artist is used to feed a work that depends solely on each individual, on their viewpoint and capacity to—by applying the tools they have at reach—succeed in altering our perception of reality and the world around us.

Ultimately, modify our self-perception. We will further see that painting and photography have walked hand in hand for many years, and not only in pop art or hyperrealism, but on the entire universe of contemporary art.

En el mes de marzo de 1913 Umberto Boccioni (18821916) se trasladaba a un apartamento situado en el número 35 de Bastione di Porta Romana, en la ciudad de Milán. El éxito debido a la gira europea de la exposición de pintura futurista –París, Londres, Berlín, Bruselas…–, además de las muestras individuales en París y Roma, la recepción de sus artículos y manifiestos, así como su propósito de extender los principios estéticoconstructivos del futurismo a la escultura pudieron ser algunos de los motivos que le llevaron a buscar un lugar más amplio. La descripción del apartamento y el pronóstico favorable de trabajo que preveía y así trasladó al amigo Vico Baer en una carta fechada el 19 de febrero anunciaban, al menos, dos hechos que se resolvieron en las habitaciones de dicho apartamento, como escenario idóneo y único donde sólo podían tener lugar, hasta la muerte del artista, acaecida en agosto de 1916 y cuyo centenario se celebra este año. En primer lugar, el entusiasta anuncio de que allí se abría una etapa de trabajo titánico e inagotable. Para alguien familiarizado con las cartas y diarios de Boccioni, este tipo de previsión constituye un lugar común de frustración continua entre la necesidad de trabajar y la imposibilidad anímica y emocional de llevarlo a cabo, presentándosele siempre un dilema y ejemplificando, hasta el límite –y el paroxismo– la apenas distancia que en su caso existe entre el artista romántico y el vanguardista futurista. En segundo lugar, porque la casa-estudio será el ámbito, a partir de las fotografías tomadas por el propio artista, donde se materialice, visualice y escenifique la consecución del principio de dinamismo plástico que atraviesa todo su discurso teórico futurista y que en particular desarrolló en su Manifiesto técnico de la escultura futurista (Milán, 11 de abril de 1912) y retomó en

Sabemos cómo era la nueva vivienda: “Se trata de una casa perfecta, que ocupa toda la primera planta.

Es un estudio-apartamento donde la puerta de entrada lleva directamente al taller, una gran estancia de más de cincuenta metros cuyas ventanas dan a la calle; es lo suficientemente grande para poder pintar un cuadro del tamaño de Materia (1912) y a la vez trabajar en una gran escultura (yeso). Desde el taller, por un pasillo, se va a un salón y las habitaciones, una de ellas para invitados”1; al tiempo que escribía: “La magnífica casa que he alquilado antes de irme a Roma me permite pensar en un gran año de trabajo material… Siento un ánimo nuevo, una conciencia fortalecida, un continuo estar haciendo y la fuerza de un trabajo incesante. Siento el orgullo, casi salvaje, que me posee cuando hablo con otros artistas…

Siento un ímpetu irresistible por una vida de orden y de trabajo titánico. ¡Construir, construir, crear! ¡Crear hasta la consumación! Pero soy todavía demasiado burgués, académico, lento y racional”2. Podría pensarse que fue en sus continuas crisis emocionales y creativas donde intentó resolver su contradictorio espíritu futurista pasatista3. Mientras, deslizándose entre el amateur y el configurador de imágenes significantes, el Boccioni fotógrafo no hacía sino apuntalar –revelando– la naturaleza dramática de su carácter dual: el Boccioni melancólico y el Boccioni “elegante Narciso”, como lo denomina Giovanna Ginex a propósito de los autorretratos que el artista se hizo en su apartamento a partir de 1913. Si en sus escritos transita entre la exaltación de verbo belicista y el lirismo romántico trasnochado empleando la voz entrecortada del antihéroe, en sus fotografías tiene lugar una lúcida combinación de construcción de identidad

y conquista plástica. Como un juego de espejos y poses ante la cámara, el mito clásico acude a la fijación del autocomplaciente autorretrato del impetuoso vanguardista. Fueron sus propios compañeros de la aventura futurista quienes recordaban que cuando Boccioni ganaba algo de dinero enseguida lo gastaba en trajes y calzado. Brillantes zapatos se advierten en las fotografías aquí comentadas, visibles cuando alza la pierna y la apoya flexionada en el plinto de su yeso Síntesis del dinamismo humano; o en aquella otra en la que aparece cómodamente sentado sobre su cama-diván en el estudio. Como se anunciaba arriba, sus fotografías refieren siempre a hechos que ocurren y a composiciones que se construyen y armonizan dentro de su apartamento-estudio. Mientras que las peroratas futuristas eran públicas y acontecían en la calle, en las páginas de Lacerba y en las galerías, en el ámbito privado y en el uso de su cámara fotográfica encontraba cumplimiento el principio de “escultura de ambiente”, culmen de su dinamismo plástico.

El desarrollo espacial de sus yesos –asunto de sus fotografías y destruidos mayoritariamente en 19274– presentados bajo las fórmulas experimentales de “síntesis del dinamismo humano”, “expansión espiral de los músculos en velocidad”, “fusión de cabeza con ventana”, “desarrollo de una botella en el espacio” y “forma única de continuidad en el espacio” ejemplifican la fusión de un cuerpo o un volumen con su ambiente, con el espacio que ocupa, significándose mutuamente. En su manifiesto de 1914 Boccioni aclaraba los conceptos de dinamismo y sucesión, indicando que esta última no se refiere a la repetición como tal, sino a la forma única que ofrece la continuidad en el espacio. El dinamismo lo definía como la concepción lírica de las formas interpretadas en el manifestarse infinito de su relatividad entre movimiento absoluto y movimiento relativo, entre ambiente y objeto, hasta conformar la aparición de un todo: ambiente+objeto. Concluyendo que “es el espacio entre objeto y objeto el que determina su valor plástico, su recíproca influencia, esto es, su fuerza dramática”.

Sus fotografías son, pues, testimonios del devenir de la tensión de las formas dinámicas en el espacio, de la ocupación de la materia –en el sentido más materialista del término– y su desarrollo espacial. Ocupación y conquista. ¿Qué otra cosa se le podía pedir a un futurista en 1913 sino la creación de un ejército anhelante de entrar en acción? Tras leer el manifiesto Pintura escultura futurista, Carlo Carrà escribía a Boccioni diciéndole que reconocía en su texto un “tono imperial”, señal y prueba

de que con él se iniciaba el camino para el regreso del hombre tipo Napoleón, del hombre capaz del golpe de estado. O, quizás, tan sólo fuera la actualización, bélico futurista, del mito de Pigmalión, siendo Boccioni un empedernido célibe entregado a la escultura5.

Un revelador ejercicio que amplifica física y espacialmente –corroborándolo– su principio de “escultura de ambiente”, y que al mismo tiempo ilustra este particular casi exclusivo interés del Boccioni fotógrafo por lo que acontecía en el interior de su apartamento lo constituyen las dos fotografías que sacó en el verano de 1913 de la fachada del edificio en el que vivía. Tomadas desde la acera, las dos imágenes tienen como objetivo captar la presencia, ocupación y desarrollo del yeso Forma única de la continuidad en el espacio, perfectamente centrado en el vano de una de las ventanas. Como una presencia fantasmal, e insistiendo en un tema e iconografía recurrentes en sus dibujos y pinturas como era la disposición de una figura ante un balcón (Retrato de la Señora Massimino, 1908; Contraluz, 1909; Retrato de la hermana leyendo, 1909; Materia, 1912), la escultura se recortaba también en la ventana, como hierático guardián del estudio en su dinamismo espacial.

Respecto a las fotografías tomadas en el interior, cabría dividirlas en tres grupos, aun participando todas y cada una de ellas en el autorretrato del artista italiano, sea en la determinación de los aspectos físicos como de los psíquicos, sin olvidar la componente melancólico-depresiva. Estos tres grupos serían: autorretratos, vistas de la casa-estudio y fotos de grupo, donde aparecen la madre Cecilia, la hermana Amelia, y en menor número su tía Colomba Boccioni Procida, dos ayudantes y Giacomo Balla. Si algo llama la atención en ellas es que Boccioni no se fotografía en el acto de trabajar, aunque a veces parezca simularlo; en cambio, de un carácter predominantemente topográfico, el artista se retrata junto a sus obras, entendiéndolas como entes dotados de vida y que ponen en juego –en el ambiente– sus fuerzas y energías inherentes. Además, tratándose del estudio de un artista que modela en yeso, el espacio está asombrosamente limpio, excesivamente pulcro y ordenado. Así, en una fotografía tomada con un punto de vista algo bajo, Boccioni ha querido retratar el estudio en toda su amplitud, incluyendo los cuatro muros de cerramiento (pared, ventanas, techo y suelo). Una escoba apoyada en la pared retiene la basura amontonada, señal de que el artista había barrido y preparado la habitación para la fotografía, además de estirar la alfombra.

En una segunda foto, se autorretrata entre esa escoba y un conjunto de lienzos y bastidores amontonados de cara a la pared. Trabajo hecho, trabajo por hacer. Que el estudio sea el ambiente de sus esculturas, pura escenografía, y en menor medida un lugar de trabajo al uso, lo pone también de manifiesto el hecho de que las paletas –quizás demasiadas y alguna de ellas demasiado grande– están colgadas en la pared, en riguroso orden de formas y tamaños. Allí ni siquiera se trabaja en serio cuando entran en escena los dos ayudantes del artista o el amigo Balla. Fare la finta… Muy diferentes resultan las fotografías de las obras de Boccioni, principalmente de los modelos en yeso, tomadas por Lucette Korsoff con motivo de la exposición individual del artista en la galería La Boëtie, en París en junio de 1913. Imágenes de trabajo hecho y ensayado en el estudio, como corroboraba el propio Boccioni en el catálogo de la muestra: “Las obras que presento al público parisino son el punto de partida de mi Manifiesto técnico de la escultura futurista (abril 1912)”.

A propósito de los autorretratos, sabiendo del carácter irascible de Boccioni, el gesto que adopta y mantiene casi de manera generalizada ante la cámara es –consciente y naturalmente– la propia del melancólico. En una serie de tres disparos, realizados entre marzo y abril de 1913, se retrata sentado junto al yeso Cabeza+casa+luz, con mano apoyada en la sien y la expresión facial y la mirada ligeramente impostadas, componiendo una actitud introspectiva y de soledad.

Una postura similar mantiene en otra serie de cuatro fotografías tomadas ante el gran lienzo Materia (1912) y fechadas entre julio y septiembre de 1913. En una de ellas coloca su mano en el mentón; en la otras tres la mano izquierda agarra una enorme paleta y en la boca sostiene un largo pincel. Pura recreación del (fingir) trabajar mediante el (fingir) fumar, pues no obstante pintar y fumar fueron dos acciones que llegaron a identificarse –en cuanto prueba de producción y combustión– en la segunda mitad del siglo XIX y más allá, y por extensión, fotografiar y fumar, como ilustra el conocido autorretrato de Germaine Krull, de 1925. En esas fotografías Boccioni se instala en una imagen icónica del artista moderno, que además desplaza el cigarro por el pincel apelando doblemente –por concentración– al acto creativo. En cambio, cuando Boccioni fuma realmente en sus autorretratos no viste la blusa de pintor, sino un elegante traje oscuro; y la actuación abandona la solemnidad para devenir divertimento cuando cambia el rictus

de su cara o intenta acoplarse al encuadre. Como serie, estas fotografías y otras tomadas de grupo cabe verlas como fotogramas de una película cómica coetánea, con tumultos, choques y risas. La misma secuencia de acoples entre yeso, artista y encuadre (ambiente) se repite en las fotografías que tomó entre noviembre y primeros días de diciembre de 1915, durante un permiso, donde aparece vestido con el uniforme del Batallón lombardo de voluntarios ciclistas y automovilistas, unidad disuelta el primero de diciembre de ese año. Si por un lado Boccioni se fotografía con el traje que le confería una identidad en vías de desaparición, por otro perpetraba, una vez más, la realización de su misión plástica futurista, donde el yeso es tan objeto en su ecuación como su propio cuerpo, como apuntó en su manifiesto de 1914: “Nosotros, en cambio, preocupados por ofrecer el resultado plástico de objeto+ambiente, detenemos la construcción del objeto allí donde la intuición lírica nos sugiere la ayuda complementaria del ambiente. Es en este momento cuando el elemento ambiente entra en el elemento objeto y forma una compenetración simultánea de planos”. Es en la tensión entre obra y artista, entre materia y ambiente, entre trabajo por hacer y trabajo hecho, donde prende la construcción polifacética del autorretrato de Boccioni, entre el sustantivo y el adjetivo: pintor, escultor, ebanista, soldado, melancólico, snob, pulcro, ordenado, amigo, sobrino, hijo y hermano.

Umberto Boccioni, Environmental Photographer Rocío Robles Tardío

In the month of March in 1913 Umberto Boccioni (18821916) moved to an apartment located at 35 Bastione di Porta Romana, in the city of Milan. The success of the European tour of the futurist painting exhibition—Paris, London, Berlin, Brussels—along with Boccioni’s solo shows in Paris and Rome, the recognition of his articles and manifestos, and his will to extend the constructive aesthetic principles of futurism into sculpture, may have been among the motives that led him to seek a bigger place. The description of the apartment and the favourable prospects that he anticipated, communicated to his friend Vico Baer in a letter dated February 19, presaged at least two events that unfolded in the rooms of this apartment, the ideal and unique setting for them to take place. Boccioni, whose centennial is celebrated this year, lived in the apartment until his death in August 1916. First, the enthusiast announced that the new apartment would accommodate the beginning of a new phase of titanic and inexhaustible work. Anyone who is familiar with Boccioni’s letters and diaries discerns that this type of expectation made for a common source of continual frustration between the need to work and the mental and emotional impossibility of doing so, always creating a dilemma and exemplifying to the limit—and the paroxysm—the slight distance that exists in his case between the romantic artist and the futurist avant-garde artist. Second, the house-studio will be the location, based on the photographs the artist took himself, of the materialization, visualization and staging of the achievement of the principle of the plastic dynamism that runs throughout the futurist theoretical discourse that he established in his Technical Manifesto of Futurist Sculpture (Milan, April 11, 1912) and revisited in Futurist Painting Sculpture (Plastic Dynamism), written during 1913 and published the following year.

We know what the new home was like: “It’s a perfect house, which occupies the entire first floor. It’s a studio apartment and the front door leads directly into the workshop, a large space measuring more than fifty square meters, with windows facing the street. It’s big enough to paint a painting the size of Materia (1912) and simultaneously work on a large sculpture (plaster). Down the hall from the workshop are the sitting room and the bedrooms, one of which is for guests”1. He also wrote: “The magnificent house that I rented before going to Rome allows me to think about a great year of material work…I’m in a new mood, with a fortified conscience, continually productive, with the strength for incessant work. I feel the almost wild pride that possesses me when I talk to other artists…I feel an irresistible drive for a life of order and titanic work. Build, build, create!

Create to the point of consummation. But I’m still too bourgeois, academic and rational.”2 One might think that he tried to resolve his contradictory evanescent futurist spirit in his continual emotional and creative crises.3 Meanwhile, shifting between the amateur and the shaper of significant images, the photographer Boccioni did nothing but underpin—revealing—the dramatic nature of his dual personality: the melancholic Boccioni and the “elegant Narcissist” Boccioni, as Giovanna Ginex called him in reference to the self-portraits that the artist made in his apartment starting in 1913. Whereas in his writings he moves between the exaltation of bellicose language and hackneyed romantic lyricism, employing the curt voice of the anti-hero, in his photographs there is a lucid combination of the construction of identity and artistic material conquest. Like a game of mirrors and poses in front of the camera, the classic legend endeavours to capture the self-complacent selfportrait of the impetuous avant-garde artist. Boccioni’s

companions in the futurist adventure remembered that as soon as he earned some money he spent it on suits and shoes. In some of the photographs referred to here one notices his shiny shoes. In one they are visible because he has raised and bent his leg to rest it on the plinth of his plaster cast Synthesis of Human Dynamism.

They are also visible in the picture in which he appears comfortably seated on the divan bed in his studio. As mentioned above, his photographs always depict events that take place and compositions that are constructed and harmonized inside his studio apartment. While the futurist diatribes were public and took place in the street, on the pages of Lacerba and in the galleries, in the private realm and by using the photographic camera Boccioni realized the principle of “environmental sculpture”, the height of his plastic dynamism.

The spatial development of his plaster casts —subject of his photographs, and mostly destroyed in 19274—presented under the experimental formulas of “synthesis of human dynamism”, “spiral expansion of muscles in velocity”, “fusion of head with window”, “development of a bottle in space”, “unique form of continuity in space” exemplify the fusion of a body or a volume with its environment, with the space it occupies, mutually signifying each other. In his 1914 manifesto Boccioni clarified the concepts of dynamism and succession, indicating that the latter does not refer to repetition as such, but to the unique form that continuity affords in space. He defined dynamism as the lyrical conception of forms interpreted in the endless manifestation of their relativity between absolute movement and relative movement, between environment and object, to the point of shaping the appearance of a whole: environment+object. Concluding that, “It is the space between object and object that determines their plastic value, their reciprocal influence, that is, their dramatic strength”. His photographs are, then, testimonies of the unfolding of the tension of dynamic forms in space, of the occupation of the material—in the most materialist sense of the term— and its spatial development. Occupation and conquest.

What else could be asked of a futurist in 1913 but the creation of an army yearning to enter into action? After reading the manifesto Futurist Painting Sculpture, Carlo Carrà wrote to Boccioni saying that he recognized in his essay an “imperial tone”, a sign and proof that with him one started down the path back to the Napoleon type of man, a man capable of a coup d’état. Or, perhaps, it

was merely the bellicose futurist updating of the myth of Pygmalion, since Boccioni was an inveterate celibate devoted to sculpture5.

The two photographs that Boccioni took in the summer of 1913 of the façade of the building in which he lived constitute a revealing exercise that physically and spatially amplifies his principle of “environmental sculpture”, and that simultaneously illustrates Boccioni’s particular and almost exclusive interest as a photographer in what took place inside his apartment. Taken from the sidewalk, it is intended that the two pictures capture the presence, occupation and development of the plaster cast Unique Forms of Continuity in Space, perfectly centred on the opening of one of the windows. Like a ghostly presence, and revisiting the recurring theme and iconography in his drawings and paintings with the placement of a figure before a balcony (Portrait of Mrs. Massimino, 1908; Backlight, 1909; Portrait of the Artist’s Sister Reading, 1909; Materia, 1912), the sculpture was also silhouetted in the window, like a hieratic guardian of the studio in its spatial dynamism.

With respect to the photographs taken inside, it would be appropriate to divide them into three groups, though each of them informs the self-portrait of the Italian artist, either in the determination of the physical or mental aspects, as well as the melancholic and depressive component. These three groups would be: self portraits, views of the home-studio, and group photos where the artist’s mother Cecelia and sister Amelia are portrayed, as are, although less often, his aunt Colomba Boccioni Procida, his two assistants, and Giacomo Balla. If one thing stands out in them it is that Boccioni does not photograph himself while working, although at times it may seem he is pretending to do so. Instead, in a predominantly topographic way, the artist portrays himself next to his works, considering them beings endowed with life and that bring into play their inherent forces and energies—in the environment. Moreover, considering that it is the studio of an artist who sculpts with plaster, the space is remarkably clean, excessively neat and tidy. For instance, in a photograph taken with a somewhat low point of view, Boccioni wished to portray the studio in its entirety, including the four partitions of the enclosure (wall, windows, ceiling and floor). A broom leaning on the wall retains the piled up trash, a sign that the artist had swept and prepared the room for the photograph, in addition to spreading out the carpet. In

a second photo, he portrays himself between the broom and a set of canvases and stretchers stacked against the wall. Work done, work to do. The fact that the studio is the setting of his sculptures, a true stage, and to a lesser degree a workplace, is also demonstrated by the palettes—perhaps too many, and some too large—are hanging on the wall, meticulously arranged by their shapes and sizes. There is no real work going on there even when the artist’s two assistants or his friend Balla appear in the scene. Fare la finta…The photographs of Boccioni’s works, mainly the plaster casts, that Lucettte Korsoff took for the artist’s solo show at the La Boëtie gallery in Paris in June 1913, are very different, for they are pictures of work done and practiced in the studio, as Boccioni himself corroborated in the exhibition catalogue: “The works that I present to the Parisian public are the departure point of my Technical Manifesto of Futurist Sculpture (April 1912)”.

With regard to the self-portraits, knowing Boccioni’s cantankerous nature, the expression that he generally adopts and maintains before the camera is—consciously and naturally—that of the melancholic. In a series of three shots, taken between March and April 1913, he portrays himself sitting next to the plaster cast Head+house+light, with his hand on his temple and the facial expression and gaze slightly contrived, composing an introspective and solitary attitude. He maintains a similar posture in another series of four photographs taken before the large format canvas Materia (1912) dated between July and September 1913. In one of them he places his hand on his chin; in the other three there is an enormous palette in his left hand, and a long brush in his mouth. This is pure recreation of (feigning) working while (feigning) smoking, even though painting and smoking came to be related—as proof of production and combustion—in the second half of the 19th century and beyond, and, by extension, so did photographing and smoking, as is illustrated by Germaine Krull’s well known self-portrait from 1925. In the aforementioned photographs Boccioni assumes the role of the iconic modern artist, who, in addition, replaces the cigarette with the brush, doubly signifying—by concentration— the creative act. However, when Boccioni actually smokes in his self-portraits he does not wear a painter’s smock, but an elegant dark suit; and the performance ceases to be solemn and becomes amusing when he changes the grimace on his face or tries to fit into the frame. As a series, these photographs and others taken

as a group can be viewed as frames from a coetaneous film or comic strip, with gags, stunts and humour. The same sequence of sets including cast, artist and frame (environment) is repeated in the photographs that he took between November and early December of 1915, during a leave, where he appears wearing the uniform of the volunteer cyclists and motorists of the Lombardy battalion, a unit broken up on December 1st of that year. Whereas on the one hand Boccioni photographed himself wearing the uniform that would grant him a disappearing identity, on the other hand he was fulfilling, once again, the futurist artistic mission, where the plaster cast is as much an object in his equation as is his own body, as he pointed out in his manifesto in 1914: “We, on the other hand, as we are concerned with offering the plastic result of object+environment, detain the construction of the object wherever the lyrical intuition suggests to us the complementary aid of the environment. It’s at that moment when the environmental element enters into the objectual element and forms a simultaneous interrelationship of planes”.

It is in the tension between work and artist, matter and environment, work done and work yet to do, where the multifaceted construction of Boccioni’s self-portraits ignites, between the noun and the adjective: painter, sculptor, woodworker, soldier, melancholic, snob, clean cut, neat, friend, nephew, son and brother.

En 1968, Richard Hamilton (Londres, 1922-Northend, Reino Unido, 2011) estaba en Nueva York. Visitaba con frecuencia a sus amigos en sus estudios. Entre ellos se encontraba el pintor pop Roy Lichenstein, aquél que hizo que Andy Warhol dejara de utilizar los cómics en sus pinturas a comienzos de la década porque quería ser original, de algún modo, único. Lichenstein quiso fotografiarle y tomó su cámara polaroid para hacerlo, su nuevo juguete. A Hamilton, artista pop también, nos han dicho los críticos y los historiadores, aunque seguramente pop de otro modo, demasiado británico quizás, le fascinó el resultado. Era demasiado intranscendente. Aparecía delante de uno de los cuadros de su amigo, con una copa y un cigarrillo en las manos. No había mucho más.

“Me sorprende lo tonto, lo banal, que parezco a menudo”, decía cuando miraba los retratos que a partir de ese momento empezó a pedir a sus amigos artistas y a otros que no lo eran tanto. Instantáneas de otros que coleccionaba y de las que se apropió en ese proyecto que duró años, hasta 2001, y que terminó recogiendo en cuatro volúmenes que se convirtieron en una gran obra en sí mismos, a pesar de que no eran originales. Lo extraño es que viendo esos retratos parecería que no se trataba tanto, o no sólo, de construir un especial diario de la vida de Hamilton, de sus idas y venidas, de sus citas y encuentros, de sus amigos y sus admirados, sino que estas polaroids, al dejarles que hicieran, permitiéndoles que le usaran sin apenas intervenir, traducen la particular forma de mirar de cada uno de estos artistas, desvelan el modo en el que se enfrentaban a la construcción de las imágenes. Y esto terminará por incluir al propio Hamilton que decidió comenzar a autorretratarse con la misma polaroid que dejaba a los otros. Puede que al final no pareciera ni tan tonto, ni tan banal. In 1968, Richard Hamilton (London, 1922-Northend, United Kingdom, 2011) was in New York. He frequently visited his friends in their studios.

Amongst them was pop artist Roy Lichtenstein, who at the start of the decade obliged Andy Warhol to stop using comic strips in his paintings because he wanted to be original, and in one way, unique.

Lichtenstein wanted to photograph him with his new toy, his polaroid camera. Art critics and historians have commented that Hamilton, also a pop artist, but representing an excessively British strand of pop, was fascinated with the results. He was too nondescript, adopting a low-key pose in front of a painting by his friend with a drink and a cigarette in his hands.

“I am surprised by how banal and foolish I seem”, he remarked when looking at the portraits of him which he began to ask his artist friends and others to take from this time onwards. These were snapshots by others which he collected and used in this project, which took years, until 2001 precisely, and which were compiled into four volumes which became a major work in themselves, despite not being original works.

Strangely, looking at these portraits they seemed to be not so much a visual record of Hamilton’s life, his dealings with his friend and admired artists, as they reflected their particular way of looking, and reveal the methods deployed in the construction of their images. To conclude, Hamilton himself features in the collection, the very same Hamilton who decided to take self-portraits with the same polaroid he let others use. Todas las preocupaciones universales de la historia del arte, como son el amor, la muerte, la historia o la mitología aparecen en la obra de Roberto González Fernández (Monforte de Lemos, España, 1948) disfrazadas de palabra, pintura y fotografía de forma prácticamente simultánea. Esta y otras series fotográficas comparten una misma pátina, la del reflejo en una superficie brillante y rallada de aquello que nos parece cotidiano, incluso históricamente asentado y bien reconocible, como son las famosas pinturas de Munch o Magritte, dotándolo de una misma distorsión.

Sin embargo, este pintor va mucho más allá de la mera integración de la textura –habitualmente asociada a la pintura– en el medio fotográfico, también incorpora las secuencias y un formato seriado, atribuyendo cualidades fotográficas a la pintura y viceversa. Así funcionan también sus temáticas y estilos, haciendo un alarde de virtuosismo en sus barrocas escenas pictóricas mientras deja para la fotografía la desfiguración más vinculada a la textura y la materia pictórica. No sólo sus fotografías mantienen el color saturado y plomizo de los pigmentos que utilizaba durante los años que vivió en Edimburgo; también las escenas y personajes de la historia y del arte reaparecen en sus pinturas bajo una mirada ecléctica, la del dominio y la interferencia de todos estos lenguajes. En esta traslación de un medio a otro, pone en juego las grandes obras maestras, que dejan de ser materia y emoción para convertirse en iconos e ideas tan abstractas y alejadas de su significado original que Roberto González Fernández titula Self-Portrait. Se reapropia de estas pinturas y revive en su propia piel lo que Paul de Man definiría como desfiguración, esa capacidad que tiene el ser humano de proyectarse, gracias a la figura estilística de la prosopopeya, en cualquier objeto inanimado, incluso en una piedra, en una pintura o en un reflejo que la mirada del artista pueda devolver a la vida. The universal concerns of the History of Art—being love, death, History or Mythology—are present in the work of Roberto González Fernández (Monforte de Lemos, Spain, 1948) ensconced in the written word, painting and photography. This and other photographic series have in common a veneer, a reflection in a brilliant, marked surface which appears to be every-day, yet historically significant and easily recognizable, like the famous paintings of Munch or Magritte, endowing it with a similar distortion. However, González goes way beyond the mere integration of texture in the photographic medium—a characteristic normally associated with painting—by also incorporating sequences and a serially arranged format, attaching photographic qualities to paintings and vice versa. This is also the driving force behind his themes and styles, showing off his virtuosity in his pictorial baroque scenes whilst leaving for photography the disfiguration more associated with texture and pictorial subject matter. Not only his photographs maintain the deep, leaden colours of the pigments he used while living in Edinburgh; the scenes and major figures from the History and Art reappear in his paintings under an eclectic gaze due to his domain and capacity of conecting all these languages. In this transition from one medium to another, the masterpieces create a synergy beyond their material state and emotion, metamorphosing into icons and ideas far more abstract and removed from their original context which Roberto González Fernández entitled Self-Portrait.

Paintings are reappropriated and revived personally, which Paul de Man would define as defacement, the donation of figure to what has no figure, thanks to the stylistic figure known as prosopopoeia. This ability of selfprojection in an inanimate object, like a stone, a painting or indeed the reflection of the artist in his masters, is what brings them back to life. A N A J . En Hard Light Opera, cuyo título se refiere a su carácter performativo, Rafael Agredano (Córdoba, 1955) trabaja con la fotografía y la luz como su elemento constituyente a partir de su experiencia con el éxtasis, bajo cuya influencia se planearon y realizaron estas fotografías. En esta serie, establece cuidadosamente una relación entre el duro cambio de luz que experimentan las pupilas de un raver, la estética del más oscuro trip hop y la del Tenebrismo. La nocturnidad asociada a la cultura de la fiesta está relacionada con el mar Mediterráneo y la descripción de un arte del pasado muy presente en su entorno. La moda y los signos de una identidad cultural están también presentes. Cuerpo y mente, que deben pasar por la prueba de continuos estados de vela y tienen que dificultades para permanecer sobrios en una cultura donde el día tiene veinticuatro horas y más.

En Hard Light Opera pone en escena –con las herramientas imaginarias de la irrealidad, en particular con la luz y materiales triviales encontrados por casualidad– arias, monólogos, y performances para uno, que son realizados por las manos de un espantajo, uno de los factores que más dominan en el teatro español. Las palabras que habitualmente aparecen escritas en sus obras para apoyar las imágenes, son en esta ocasión obras en sí mismas por lo absurdos que resultan los títulos en los que aparecen. El estilo de las largas y muy estudiadas frases que sirven de título a poemas, composiciones musicales de vanguardia o ensayos “interesantes” es ridiculizado. Un palacio de naipes que esconde la estupidez de la vacuidad retórica como las olas de la locura ocultan la ambición. N U R I A E N G U I T A

In Hard Light Opera—the title refers to the series performance-like character—Rafael Agredano (Córdoba, Spain, 1955) deals with photography and the light as its constituting element through his experience with ectasy, under whose influence these photographs have been designed and planned. In these photographs, he carefully establishes a link between the sharp change of light experienced by the pupils of a raver, the aesthetic of the darkest formulas of the trip hop and the aesthetic of the historical Tenebrist forms.

The night relatedness of the street and party culture are closely linked to the Spanish Mediterranean sea and the dramatic description of the art of a past strongly present in his surrounding. The fashion and the signs of cultural identity are also present. Body and mind have to undergo the test of continued waking states and have difficulties to stay sober in a culture where the day has twenty-four hours and more.

In Hard Light Opera he stages—with the imaginary tools of unreality, in particular with light and trivial means turning up by coincidence—arias, monologues, one man performances, which are held with the hands by the scarecrow, the strongest dominant factor of the Spanish theatre. The words usually appearing in writing in his work to support the pictures, appear this time as parallel works in the absurd titles of his photographs. The style of the long, especially formed sentences which serve as tittle of poems, avantgarde musical compositions or “interesting” essays is ridiculed. A false house of cards architecture which is to hide the stupidity of eloquent emptiness like waves of foolishness are to hide ambition. N U R I A E N G U I T A

No nos lo han contado lo suficiente, prefirieron ocultarlo porque no interesaba en la construcción de una genealogía de un arte puramente americano, que era también una forma de decir todo el arte contemporáneo, una metonimia, una parte por el todo. En esta historia que escribieron y que dejaba mucho fuera, excluía tanto y a tantos, un genio sucedía a otro sin apenas descanso, de un gran pintor se pasaba al siguiente sin transición.

Se partía, siempre, de esa figura que tenía mucho de héroe –pintaba con dos pelotas, se afirmaba–, un poco de mártir –se sacrificó por la pintura– y algo de estrella del cine –actuó para la cámara de Hans Namuth, haciendo de sí mismo– que era Jackson Pollock. Sin embargo, no se sabía dónde acabaría, aunque quizás terminó más pronto de lo que a algunos les hubiese gustado, en los 80 con Jean-Michel Basquiat, también héroe, mártir y estrella.

Puede que por eso se haya ignorado el trabajo fotográfico de Robert Rauschenberg (Port Arthur, EE.UU., 1925-Captiva, EE.UU., 2008) hasta hace relativamente pocos años. Que se prefiriera evitar decir que incluso dudó en ser pintor cuando abandonó el Black Mountain College, aquél mítico lugar al que decidió marcharse a estudiar y en el que todos sabemos, se han encargado de enseñárnoslo, que daban clases John Cage, su mentor, y Josef Albers, que le enseñó casi todo sobre el color.

Lo que no se nos dice es que allí estaban también Harry Callahan y Aaron Siskind, con los que aprendió a fotografiar y que le enseñaron a mirar, porque si la pintura tenía que ver con la mano, la fotografía es sobre el ojo.

Y el ojo de Rauschenberg era muy especial, veía de otra forma, de otro modo que se alejaba de la norma. Sus fotografías desvelaban demasiado, algo que él mismo tardó en contar porque no quería que le rechazaran.

Sus instantáneas eran demasiado íntimas. Los retratos de Cy Twombly y Jasper Jones dejaban al descubierto un secreto: el de un amor que todavía no osaba decir su nombre. Quizás ese sea el motivo de que no se nos hablara a tiempo de las fotografías de Rauschenberg.

The story has not been told in its entirety, remaining hidden because there was an interest in constructing a genealogy, full of geniuses, of American art, which was another way of referring to all contemporary art, a metaphor, one small part of the big picture. In this History they wrote, which leaves out so much and so many, one genius relentlessly succeeded another. There was a seamless transition from one great painter to the next. A starting point is Pollock’s heroic air—he painted with two balls—; he also was a martyr to the cause—he sacrificed himself to his art—and a film star—playing himself in front of Hans Namuth’s camera—. And though they did not know when this story, now without its capital letter, would finish, it ended way before many would have liked, maybe along with Michel Basquiat, another hero, martyr and star.

This could be why the photographic work of Robert Rauschenberg (Port Arthur, USA, 1925-Captiva, USA, 2008) has been largely ignored until relatively recently. On leaving Black Mountain College he had major doubts about being a painter.

As we all know he went to this mythical place to study under the tutelage of his mentor, John Cage, and Josef Albers, who taught him almost everything about colour. What is not widely known is that Harry Callaghan and Aaron Siskind were also there, with whom he learned photography and to look, because if painting has to do with the hand, photography is about the eye. And Rauschenberg had that special eye, a different form of perception, completely different to the norm. His photos revealed too much, something which he only spoke of later, as he did not want him and his work to be rejected. His snapshots were too intimate. His portraits of Cy Twombly and Jasper Jones revealed a secret: a love which do not dare to speak its name. Perhaps this is what causes that Rauschenberg’s photos have not been included in this story on time. They broke the mold of the heroic genius, martyr and film star. S . R .

KAR E N KIL I M NIK Cuentos de hadas y bosques encantados / Fairy Tales and Enchanted Forests

Conocida por sus instalaciones y sus pinturas, la artista Karen Kilimnik (Filadelfia, EE.UU., 1955) trabaja con collage, recortes de revistas, fotogramas de cine y objetos de la cultura popular, bajo una mirada romántica que bebe de los medios de comunicación, los cuentos y los misterios góticos. Forma parte de una generación de artistas conceptuales emergente en los noventa conocido como Scatter Art, junto a Félix González-Torres o Mike Kelly. Ya en 1988 Kilimnik utiliza simultáneamente la pintura y la fotografía en una serie titulada Me as donde se fotografía y se pinta a sí misma como estrellas del cine y personajes famosos.

Su fotografía se caracteriza por la misma sensualidad que sus pinturas, atraída por la falsedad en los medios de comunicación y los programas televisivos de los sesenta. No se puede resistir a su estética kitsch, al eclecticismo, al glamour ni al exceso que definen su particular estilo idílico hasta la saciedad. Todo ello se envuelve en una atmósfera irreal, incluso más que sus propias pinturas, donde los títulos resultan fundamentales para comprender su mundo interior. Sus imágenes cercanas y poderosamente cotidianas llegan incluso hasta lo anecdótico y superficial, compartiendo entre ellas un imaginario común: gatos, castillos, hadas, flores, pájaros, lámparas, libros, princesas... y un sinfín de elementos comunes a la literatura infantil, los ídolos de masas y la cultura popular. Sus fotografías cuidadosamente inquietantes y simbólicas van desde el realismo multicolor más figurativo y banal hasta el profundo y personal ensueño del mundo de los reflejos y la abstracción. A . Known for her installations and paintings, the artist Karen Kilimnik (Philadelphia, USA, 1955) worked with collage, magazine clippings, cinematography, objects depicting popular culture, under a romantic gaze heavily influenced by the media, tales and gothic mysteries.

She is one of the generation of conceptual artists who emerged alongside Felix González-Torres or Mike Kelly from the 1990s movement known as Scatter Art. In 1988 Kilimnik simultaneously used painting and photography in a series entitled Me as, where she photographed and painted herself as film stars or celebrities.

Her photography is characterized by the same sensuality as her painting, attracted to the superficiality of the media and television programs of the sixties. The kitsch, eclecticism, glamour and excess that define her idyllic style ad nauseam are irresistible. An unreal atmosphere surrounds her work, including more than just her own paintings, where the titles are a key part of understanding her inner world. Her intimate and powerful images of daily life, including even the superficial and anecdotal, share the same imagination: cats, castles, fairies, flowers, birds, lamps, books, princesses and endless procession of elements common to children´s literature, the idols of the masses and popular culture. Her precisely disturbing and symbolic photographs range from extreme figurative and banal multicolour realism to a deeply personal daydream set in the world of images and abstraction. A . J . R .

¿Cuándo empezaste a fotografiar? ¿Por qué?

Recuerdo que me regalaron una cámara, era muy sencilla, una Kodak Instamatic, creo: fue por hacer socio del Círculo de Lectores a un amigo del instituto, yo lo era por el mismo motivo.

Dibujaba mucho desde pequeño y recuerdo pasar muchos momentos intentando dar forma, acercarme a las cosas, rehacerlas sobre un papel. Y, aunque era un niño travieso y vitalista que jugaba y peleaba con mi hermano, pasaba mi tiempo ensimismado, mirando, mirando y dibujando, y ponía atención hacia esas cosas, momentos e imágenes que no importaban demasiado a mi alrededor. Y lo hacia sin esfuerzo, sin intención, cosas y actitud que me iban sorprendiendo y atrapando cada vez más.

Ya con la cámara, a la ilusión inicial por el fetiche y la mirada, el ojo encuadrado se fue se fue imponiendo, y, poco a poco, una cierta intención por hacer buenas fotos, o singulares. Pero todo dentro de un “contexto” donde la intención no podía llegar a convertirse en afán, porque no eran buenos tiempos, ni contextos, para gastar muchos carretes e ilusiones, tirando fotos a la basura.

Y, todo esto se gestaba en un contexto de base cultural muy deficitaria; y, a mi pasión por el dibujo, a mis sueños por la pintura, se sumaba ahora mi atracción por la fotografía. En verdad que mi relación con la cultura seria era muy, muy lejana, casi inexistente; existía una gran distancia entre lo que yo soñaba e intentaba hacer y lo que las palabras enmarcaban como arte.

Es decir, ¿cuándo empezaste a fotografiar no tenías referentes? ¿Tuvo que ver más con una intuición?

Si, referentes prácticamente ninguno, yo pertenecía a un contexto socio-cultural muy limitado, donde las únicas fotografías que recuerdo eran algunas, muy pocas, familiares. Y, es que en realidad, salvo los cromos, eran muy pocas las imágenes que llegaban a nuestras manos, y tampoco entonces la fotografía estaba valorada o considerada un medio artístico.

Las imágenes me atraían siempre y ahora me atraía hacer fotos, mirar y elegir el disparo pero, a la vez, no podía disparar desperdiciando película, no podía permitírmelo. Recuerdo que ya me atraían esas fotos que no eran necesariamente perfectas, que no estaban “arregladas” o eran necesariamente buenas. Todo era muy primario e intuitivo y, recuerdo que me sorprendían positivamente los accidentes, esas zonas de color inesperado o cambiante; me atraían aspectos y detalles que para otros compañeros eran claros síntomas de un error o mala fotografía.

Hasta finales de los 90 tus fotografías no se expusieron, ¿fue una decisión propia o era porque a los comisarios les interesaba más mostrar la pintura?

Yo he hecho muchas, muchas fotos, porque me seducen aún muchas cosas, detalles, momentos de intensidad y, mi ojo, como el del niño, aún se sorprende.

Pero de algún modo, como también creo me ha ocurrido con la pintura, nunca pretendí del todo hacer la mejor foto del mundo, sino la foto de mi momento. La diferencia es que, ya desde muy pequeño, el dibujo y la pintura me iluminaban, me hacían sentir de ese otro modo y, aunque fuera de manera oculta, siempre deseaba ser pintor, o artista, o hacer cosas que iluminaran. Y, en cambio, lo de mi afición, aproximación a la

fotografía, se ha producido de manera más sosegada; te confieso que cuando “veo algo” no puedo dejar de disparar. Necesito cogerlo, aunque sea para solo almacenarlo ahí, en ese lugar de “amnesia” al que llamo zona olvidada de mi almacén.

Revelo muy poco, disparo mucho pero paso muy pocas cosas al papel. Y eso que hubo un tiempo en que pasaba muchas horas en el laboratorio. Yo mismo tuve, cuando estudiaba con Vicky (Civera) en Valencia, y también más tarde, viviendo ya en Santander, un pequeño cuarto oscuro en casa. Y me sigue encantando la idea de ese “cuarto oscuro”, pues creo de veras que es la habitación, del conjunto de las que somos, donde mejor se revelan nuestros sueños.

Con el paso del tiempo creo que he agudizado mi intención en el momento de hacer-disparar, pero después no me decido a ejecutar, qué hacer con ellas: si revelarlas o no, si ampliarlas en grande o en pequeño, si exponerlas o no, creo que he preferido guardarlas de algún modo en la penumbra semiprivada de la ilusión, como el secreto ese que nos costaba de niños compartir por miedo a quitarle la magia.

Bueno, existe una experiencia curiosa, y extraña, si lo miramos con ojos actuales: En un momento, hacia el 76, mientras estudiábamos Bellas Artes en Valencia, Vicky y yo hicimos una serie de trabajos en colaboración, lo llamábamos Cosas de la Vida y en ellos utilizábamos fotografía, collage, pintura… e incorporábamos también otros objetos y materiales de la industria del consumo, sexo, moda, etc. Imágenes tomadas de revistas, barajas, calendarios religiosos, cartas personales…

Eran fotografiadas y reveladas en el cuarto oscuro, manipuladas como yuxtaposiciones o collages y luego incorporadas a unas cajitas, como escenarios o vitrinas, donde también eran coloreadas con acuarela liquida, viradas, o pulverizadas con aerógrafo. El resultado era una especie de escenarios ambientales donde se mostraban aspectos “oscuros” o prohibidos de la vida y la sociedad en que vivíamos. Tenían una intención obviamente crítica e irónica, éramos jóvenes comprometidos y queríamos contribuir a desapelmazar y liberar la tortilla española, desamordazar tabúes. El resultado fue algo desesperanzador y no muy agradable.

A finales de los 80 y sobre todo ya en los 90, solía incorporar algunas fotos en mis catálogos de pintura. Algunas eran prestadas y otras tomadas por mí, y lo hacía más que para mostrar fotos mías, para que hicieran de inductores, acompañaran un texto, o como separatas,

que ayudaran a sugerir y a contextualizar. Las incluía pretendiendo invocar más que explicar, aunque su presencia añadiera también un componente didáctico a la publicación. Howard Read siempre se interesó por mis fotos, desde que trabajaba en Robert Miller. Hicimos un portafolio juntos: Luz aislada en el 97, y lo mostramos en Cheim & Read. La primera vez que expuse fotos individualmente quizás fue en la galería Buchmann, en Colonia, hacia el 95, pero ya antes Vicente Todolí, así como Rainer Crone y Kevin Power, me animaban a ampliar y exponer mis fotos.

El caso es que a partir de mostrar un amplio bloque de ellas en mi exposición del Instituto Valenciano de Arte Moderno (IVAM), Back & Fourth, comenzaron a pedirme fotos para otros proyectos y exposiciones; aunque yo me sentía bastante en contradicción, no porque no me gustara hacerlas material expositivo, si no, sobre todo, porque me exigían demasiado tiempo, tiempo que yo necesitaba cada vez mas para pintar en el estudio.

En algunas ocasiones, se ha dicho que tu concepción de la fotografía es dependiente de tu concepción de la pintura, ¿qué piensas de esta afirmación?

Bueno, en parte tiene sentido. Existe una vinculación, un puente más o menos obvio que las une pero, en mi caso, una práctica no es necesariamente el eslabón que conduce a la otra. No es raro ver fotografías por encima de alguna mesa de mi estudio. A veces las observo y trato de ordenarlas, otras veces permanecen ahí, por un tiempo, en el olvido. Pero no suelo utilizarlas para pintar, digamos, como guía, ni me tienta demasiado trabajar sobre ellas coloreándolas o añadiendo pintura. El puente es sin duda la mirada, soy yo quien pintando macera, descubre o construye las imágenes en la tela, en el estudio; y, también yo, quien las encuentra, las fotografía afuera.

Entonces, cuando fotografías buscas, de algún modo, la pintura fuera, ¿no?

A veces me parece que pinto con la cámara, pero no sé, no creo que busque literalmente la pintura. Yo no diría eso de forma tan clara, aunque luego me encuentre con ella.

Lo que creo que disparo es distinto, si bien referencial, pero no me canso de repetir, repetirme, que la pintura es irreproducible e insustituible. Hay sí, algo de

necesidad psicológica, un afán de acercamiento y reencuentro; pero quizás no con la pintura, con su cuerpo, sino con una cierta re-semblanza, un espectro icónico, diría. Que actúe temporalmente como una membrana, familiar, que incluso ocupe temporalmente su lugar, pero de otra naturaleza.

La pintura posee una cualidad sustancial diferenciadora e intransferible, pero “el ojo es el cerebro”, me dijo Nemo, y es cierto. Yo disparo con un ojo rebozado en pintura, y quizás siga buscando la pintura fuera de la pintura, en otro cuerpo, a sabiendas de la imposibilidad de una transustanciación, incluso de la imposibilidad de la traducción. Ambos cuerpos me gustan pero soy consciente de sus diferencias y no pretendo sustituir una materia por otra.

Cuando fotografío, en un museo, o en el mismo estudio y, elijo un fragmento, o el detalle de una pintura creciendo, soy muy consciente de que el resultado es otra cosa bien distinta; me apoyo y me sirve, pero es ya otra cosa y, otra imagen, y dejo que el motivo crezca y se libere, procurando no secarlo.

Cada medio tiene su verdad porque responde a procesos diferenciados y macera e involucra el tiempo de modo distinto en los procesos. Pretender sustituir o reproducir una pintura, por muy sofisticados que devengan las tecnologías, es una falacia que nos conduciría a algo embalsamado, o, quizás a un ejercicio de taxidermia. ¿Cómo se relacionan tu obra fotográfica y tu obra pictórica?

Conviven pero no mestizan del todo, se muestran por separado, en soportes diferentes. Se acompañan pero la pintura es el hermano mayor.

Hacia 1996, en la cubierta de la primera exposición que revisaba con amplitud mi trabajo como pintor, aparecía una fotografía de mí mismo con mi vieja Canon F1. Era una fotografía invertida tomada por mí en 1993, frente al espejo de un ascensor, antes de salir a la calle. Bajaba en el ascensor armado con la cámara, protegido por ella, posiblemente a respirar y también al encuentro-búsqueda de imágenes. Estaba cansado tras una larga jornada en el estudio y necesitaba salir de la trama pictórica, de sus zozobras y, respirar afuera, reencontrarme con el otro tiempo de la vida. Desde que estudiaba Bellas Artes tuve por meta no aislarme del mundo real en esa “torre de Marfil’

del arte trasnochado, que tanto criticábamos entonces, pero en la práctica de la pintura el tiempo es muy distinto y era muy habitual pasarte el día encerrado en el estudio. Era una imagen simbólica e invertida y multiplicada en el espejo: la pintura saliendo a la calle en ascensor a reencontrarse, acercarse a las palpitaciones y cambios de la vida. Necesitaba romper esa membrana aislante que diariamente construía y, afrontar la distancia sensible e insalvable que separa nuestra actividad en el estudio del acelerado paso de las cosas y sucesos, de la vida.

Desde que compré aquella cámara y aprendí a soñar en negativo, hubo, durante muchos años un rincón en mi estudio, un cuarto oscuro donde revelar y soñar.

Ha pasado mucho tiempo, y el almacén de imágenes continúa sin ordenarse. Muchas fotos se estropean o se pierden, desaparecen; son como fragmentos, retazos de vida que intenté por un momento retener y, otras veces robar para siempre.

Lo habitual es olvidarlas y engordar con ellas ese Almacén Amnésico donde permanecerán por largo tiempo, a veces, para siempre. Pero fotografiar me ayuda no sólo a robarle cosas a la vida, sino a encontrarme yo en ellas; sentir que la sintaxis, luz, tramas y colores en zozobra, que maceramos lentamente en el estudio, están también ahí, en otra naturaleza, pero al alcance de todos. Es cuestión de mirar, observar y nombrar, recortando con la cámara.

Disparar afila nuestra percepción, nos ayuda a ver al elegir, nos sorprende y exalta, nos compromete aún por un instante y, también nos engaña.

Disparando ejecutamos un acto volitivo que aun esconde la creencia de que aún es posible materializar una verdad. Y digo esto con mucha relatividad porque aunque yo evito editar, retocar las imágenes que hago, la fotografía actual ya no es de esa naturaleza, o ha mutado en gran parte este supuesto. Como fuera, a mí aún me sorprende, me anima y, quizás reconforta, la idea de encontrar y encontrarme en las cosas: en una esquina, un museo, un cielo o, mirando bajo mis pies, algo que me reafirma; y hace que sienta menos insalvable la distancia que existe entre el ritmo lento de mis dudas y zozobras en el estudio y el otro ritmo, voraz y acelerado de la otra vida.

Y la cámara también esta ahí, en el estudio, como testigo y asistente. A veces la uso para fotografiar un fragmento, memorizar una situación, una fase del proceso de una pintura. A veces fotografío una pintura para

separarme de ella; me llevo su imagen en el cristal para mirarla luego, lejos del estudio.

De algún modo, entonces, la fotografía te sirve casi como un espejo negro, ese lugar al que recurrir cuando la mirada que pinta necesita descansar, ¿no?

Sí, creo que va por ahí, renovar, limpiar, tomar distancia sin perder el reflejo del todo. Cambiar de medio para desbloquear, sin cambiar intenciones ni objetivos, simplemente respirar otro elemento. Tomar otro aire.

Las fronteras y purismos, las distancias insalvables entre los medios de producción de imágenes han sido cuestionadas y vapuleadas muchas veces.

Yo mismo siento a veces que pinto haciendo fotos; pero siento que sería incapaz de nadar haciendo pesas, o incluso, de nadar en seco. Desde la ventanilla del tren

veo venir las imágenes, y disparo. Siento que utilizo la fotografía para jugar, moviéndome entre la velocidad y la calma, entre la idea de fijación y recorrido.

Me gustaría encender esa línea naranja que separa las líneas, las líneas del ave y el paisaje.

Revisando disparos: prefiero aquellas tomas donde la imagen se descompone, o torna otra cosa. Busco con afán las líneas de color que nos atraen e interrogan desde su naturaleza cambiante, bañadas o aisladas de luz.

El “pozo oscuro” esconde un gran rompecabezas, un puzzle enorme y desordenado al cual me acerco, con ánimo de perderme y, reconocerme. Es a la vez refugio y lugar de desahogo; las dos cosas.

Y de repente miro hacia ese lugar donde incide un rayo, o un haz leve de luz, temblorosa, entre las cosas, que construye, las cosas temblorosas.

The Eye Is The Brain Sergio Rubira

How did you get started in photography?

I was a member of the Readers Circle and when I convinced a high school friend to join, they gave me a simple snapshot camera, a Kodak Instamatic I think.

As a child, I was constantly drawing. I remember spending a lot of time getting close to things, trying to understand them, copying them in a piece of paper.

And although I was a mischievous and energetic kid who played and fought with his brother, I would get lost in thought watching my surroundings, watching and drawing. I paid attention to the everyday experiences and images around me. And I did it without making an effort, unintentionally. This way of approaching things both surprised and captivated me.

Once I had the camera, the initial illusion for fetishism and gaze was soon dominated by the compositional eye, and gradually, by a certain intention to make good or unique photographs. But everything within a “context” where the intention could not become desire because we were living difficult times and could not afford to waste any film rolls or illusions by throwing away photos.

All this evolved in a poor cultural background, and now I had to add my attraction towards photography to my passion for drawing and painting. Truth be told, my contact with serious culture was very distant, almost inexistent: there was a huge gap between what I wanted to do and what was defined as art.

So, when you began taking pictures you had no referents? It was more intuitive?

Yes, there were practically no referents. I was part of a very limited socio-cultural context where the only photographs I can remember from that time were a few family pictures. The truth is that except for picture cards, very few images were available to us, and back then photography wasn’t valued or considered an art form.

I had always been drawn to images and now I was interested in taking pictures, observing and choosing what to shoot, but at the same time I couldn’t just shoot freely and waste film, it wasn’t something I could afford.

From very early on, I was attracted to the photographs that were not perfect, that were not “prepared” or necessarily good. Everything was very primitive and intuitive and I remember being pleasantly surprised by accidents, those areas of changing or unexpected colour. In fact, aspects and details of the photograph that other colleagues considered a mistake or a flaw actually fascinated me.

Your photographs were not exhibited until the late 1990s. Was it a conscious decision or was it because the curators were more interested in the paintings?

I have taken many pictures because I am still seduced by many things, details, moments of intensity, and my eye—like the eye of the child— continues to be amazed.

But in a way—as I believe has also happened with my paintings—I never expected to take the best photo in the world, but rather the photograph of my experience. The difference is that, ever since I was

very small, drawing and painting enlightened me. They made me feel different, and even if it was in a secret way, I always dreamed of becoming a painter or an artist, or make things that enlightened me. Instead, my approach to photography happened in a calmer fashion. I admit that when I “see something” I can’t stop shooting. I need to capture it, even if just for the sake of archiving it in that place of “amnesia” I call the forgotten space of my memory.

I don’t develop much. I shoot a lot but rarely transfer anything onto paper. However, there was a time when I used to spend countless hours in the lab. I had my own dark room when I studied with Vicky (Civera) in Valencia, and later when I lived in Santander. I am still enchanted by the idea of a “dark room” since I truly believe that it is the room where our dreams are best revealed.

Through time, I think I have improved my intention when shooting, but afterwards I can’t decide what to do with them: whether or not to develop or enlarge them or show them. I think I have preferred to somehow keep the photographs in the semiprivate shadows of illusion, like that secret we were so reluctant to share when we were kids for fear of ruining the magic.

Actually, in retrospect, I can think of a bizarre and curious experience. In the year 1976, while studying Visual Arts in Valencia, Vicky and I made a series of collaborative works called Life Things.

We used photographs, collage, painting, and also incorporated other objects and materials from the industries of consumerism, sex, fashion, etc.

The images were taken from magazines, deck of cards, religious calendars and personal letters. We photographed and developed them in the dark room and afterwards manipulated the images through juxtapositions or collages and placed them in small boxes, like scenarios or window displays coloured with aquarelles or airbrushes. The results were a sort of atmospheric scenarios that showed the “dark” or forbidden aspects of the life and society we lived in. The intention was to be ironic and critical; we were young and politically engaged and wanted to challenge taboos. The result was demoralising and unpleasant.

During the late 1980s and especially during the 1990s, I started incorporating a few photographs to my catalogue of paintings. Some were borrowed

and others were taken by me. More than to show my photographs, their purpose was to accompany a text, serve as introduction, or work as a supplement to help suggest or contextualize something.

The object of their inclusion was to invoke more than to explain, even though their presence added a didactic component to the publication. Howard Read always showed an interest in my photographs, ever since he worked at Robert Miller. In 1997 we made a portfolio together, Luz Aislada, and showed it at Chem & Read. The first solo exhibition of my photographs was probably at the Buchmann gallery in Cologne, circa 1995, but before that, Vicente Todolí, and Rainer Crone and Kevin Power had encouraged me to enlarge and show my photographic work.

Anyway, after my exhibition Back and Forth at the Valencia Institute of Modern Art (IVAM) that included a huge selection of photographs, I started getting commissions for other projects and shows. However, I was feeling rather conflicted, not because I didn’t want to convert the photographs into exhibition material, but mainly because it demanded a lot of time, time I needed to paint at the studio.

It has been said that your notion of photography is dependant to your notion of painting. What are your thoughts on this?

Well, it kind of makes sense. There is a correlation, a more or less obvious bridge that connects them. But in my case, one is not necessarily the path that leads to the other. It is not uncommon to find a photograph on top of a table in my studio. Sometimes I observe them and try to organize them, other times they just sit there for a while, forgotten.

But I rarely use them as a guide for a painting, nor am I tempted to work on top of the photograph by colouring it or adding paint. The connection is undoubtedly the gaze. As a painter, I discover or construct the images in the canvas at the studio; and it is also me who finds the images outside and photographs them.

So in a way, when you take pictures you are searching for the painting outside. Sometimes I feel like I paint with the camera, but I don’t think I am literally searching for the painting. I wouldn’t state it so plainly, even if I do end up finding it.

My photographs can be referential but I believe I am capturing something different. I never get tired of insisting that painting is unrepeatable an irreplaceable.

There is definitely a certain psychological need, a desire to get close to something, although not necessarily with the core of painting, but rather with a certain resemblance, an iconic spectre that can temporarily act like a membrane or momentarily occupy its place, but of a different nature.

Painting possesses a substantial distinguishing and non-transferrable quality, but “the eye is the brain” as Captain Nemo said, and he is right. I shoot with an eye influenced by painting, and perhaps I continue to search for the practice of painting outside the painting, in another form, knowing of its impossible transubstantiation, knowing even of the impossibility of such conversion. I like both mediums but am aware of their differences and have no intention of substituting one for the other.

When I photograph, in a museum, or in the study, and I choose a fragment or a detail of a growing painting, I am fully aware that the result will be something completely different. I lean on it and it works, but it is something else, another image, and I let the motive grow free, careful not to dry it.

Each art form holds its own truth because it responds to differentiated processes and the pace involved in each process is not the same. No matter how sophisticated technology gets, the misconception that a painting can be replaced or reproduced will only lead to something embalmed or perhaps a taxidermy exercise.

What is the connection between your photographic work and your paintings?

They coexist without merging entirely and are shown separately, in different supports. They accompany each other but painting remains the older brother.

Circa 1996, the catalogue cover of the first exhibition that extensively revised my work as a painter showed a picture of me with my old Canon F1. It was an inverted self-portrait taken in 1993 in front of an elevator mirror before going out on the street. I was going down the elevator armed with my camera —protected by it—probably to take fresh air and search-find images. I was tired after a long day at the studio and needed to get out of the pictorial mesh, of

its uneasiness, and go outdoors to immerse myself in that other pace of life. Ever since I was studying Visual Arts, I made a promise not to isolate myself from the real world by working all night in that “Ivory tower” we were so keen to criticise at the time. But when you are painting, time is very different and it was common to spend an entire day locked in the studio working. It was a symbolic and inverted image multiplied by the mirror: painting going out on the street in an elevator to meet and get close to the palpitations and changes of life. I needed to brake that isolating membrane I built daily and confront the insurmountable and sensitive distance that separates our activity in the studio from the accelerated pace of things and events.

Ever since I bought that camera and learned to dream in negative, my studio had, for many years, a corner used as a dark room to develop and dream.

A long time has gone by since then, and the archive of images remains unorganised. Many pictures have been ruined or lost or disappeared; they are like fragments, remnants of life that I momentarily tried to freeze, and—at times—steal forever.

They are commonly forgotten and used to enlarge that Amnesic Archive where they will stay for a long time, sometimes forever. Taking photographs not only helps me steal things from life, it also lets me find myself in these things; feel that the syntax, light, halftones and colours that are slowly macerated in the studio, are also there, in another form, but within everyone’s reach. It’s just a matter of looking, observing and naming, framing with the camera.

Shooting pictures sharpens our perception, it helps us to choose, it surprises and exalts us, it forces us to commit even if just for an instant, and it also deceives us.

When we shoot, we are engaging in a volitional act that implies it is still possible to materialise a truth.

And I say this very relatively because even though I can edit and retouch the images that I take, current photography has a different nature, or has greatly mutated that premise. Either way, I am still amazed by the idea of finding things and recognising myself in them. It cheers me up, probably comforts me, to find something in a corner, in a museum, in the sky, or under my feet, that reassures me and shortens the distance between the slow rhythm of my doubts and uneasiness in the studio and the more voracious and accelerated pace of the other life.

And the camera is also there, in the studio, as a witness and as an assistance. I sometimes use it to photograph a fragment, memorise a situation, or record a specific stage of a painting. Sometimes I photograph a painting to take distance from it; I take the image to look at it later, far from the studio.

So is it accurate to say that, in a way, photography serves almost as a Claude glass, a place to turn to when the eye of the painter needs to rest?

Exactly, to renovate, clean, take distance without losing the overall reflection. Shift from one medium to another to unblock the mind without altering the objectives or intentions. Simply breathe another element. Change perspective.

The limitations and purisms, as well as the unachievable distances between the different ways of producing images, have been questioned and criticised repeatedly.

I myself sometimes feel like I paint taking photographs; but that would be like swimming while holding weights or swimming without water. Looking out the window of a train I see the images pass by and I shoot. I think I use photography to play, moving between velocity and slowness, between the idea of fixation and trajectory. I would like to ignite that orange line that separates the lines, the lines between the train and the landscape.

Going through the material I have photographed, I prefer those shots where the image is fragmented or transforming into something else. I eagerly search for the colour lines that pull and interrogate us from its changing nature, either bathed or deprived of light.

The “ dark pit” conceals a big puzzle, a huge and untidy puzzle that I approach, hoping to get lost and recognise myself. It’s both a shelter and a place to vent.

And suddenly I look towards that place altered by a ray of light, or where a soft beam filters through a space, creating trembling things.

L U I S G OR D ILLO La realidad era otra cosa / Reality Was Something Else

Lo primero que piensas frente a las fotografías de Luis Gordillo (Sevilla, 1934) es que eso que estás viendo no es la realidad, sino que es una construcción posiblemente pictórica, que la fotografía en esta ocasión no es un simple testigo, sino un elemento de reconstrucción.

Porque, si no es así, cómo es que nunca habíamos visto las cosas, esas mismas cosas, de esta manera. La capacidad del artista para aislar una realidad mayor y entresacar solamente aquello que encaja en su visión del mundo es fascinante. Lo que nos demuestra es que la realidad es otra cosa, que lo que vemos nosotros no es lo mismo que pueden ver otros cuando miran lo mismo que nosotros hemos mirado. Si ya en sus pinturas Gordillo construye un mundo en secuencias, donde la repetición de elementos absurdos y aparentemente sin sentido conforman un mosaico que es trasunto de lo real, pero a la vez ilusión e inevitablemente una construcción formal sintetizada, lo que fotografía es prácticamente igual pero sin que el artista intervenga en la construcción de su realidad, Gordillo construye con su mirada, aislando del entorno, enfocando solamente el tema central de su interés, los mismos motivos cotidianos e irreales, familiares pero absurdamente ajenos, que habitan sus pinturas. The first thing that comes to mind when you see the photographs of Luis Gordillo is that what is depicted does not correspond to reality but possibly to a pictorial construction, that in this case, photography does not serve as a simple witness but rather as an element of reconstruction. Otherwise, how come we haven’t already seen those same things from that point of view? The artist’s capacity to isolate a higher reality and pull out only that which fits his vision of the world is fascinating.

What he shows us is that reality is something else, that what we see is not the same to what others perceive when they see the exact same thing. In his paintings, Gordillo’s world is constructed in sequences where the repetition of seemingly senseless and absurd elements make up a mosaic that, though it copies reality, is also an illusion and an inevitable synthesised formal construction. His photographs are basically the same but without the artist intervening in the construction of his reality. Through the artist’s eye, the camera isolates the surroundings and focuses only on the main object of interest succeeding in creating the same mundane and unreal motifs shown in his paintings which are simultaneously familiar and absurdly extraneous. Hay imágenes que desafían la gravedad, el orden y la naturalidad de los elementos que nos rodean. Así son los equilibrios que gravitan en las hojas de contactos del pintor y escultor madrileño Guillermo Mora (Alcalá de Henares, 1980). A través de la repetición de elementos, colores y formas sencillas, la mirada se pasea de una instantánea a otra estableciendo relaciones. ¿Por qué yo no lo veo si son objetos tan básicos que deberían saltar a la vista? Se requiere una mirada como la suya, juguetona y sugerente que invite a ver el mundo a su manera. Aunque parte de la pintura, Mora no se queda en la mera contemplación sino que construye con ella espacios fronterizos, que desafían y cuestionan el orden natural de las cosas. Sus esculturas mantienen también esta lucha interna entre diferentes cualidades de los objetos, tensando y abrazando los límites entre lo suave y lo craquelado, entre lo volátil y lo robusto.

Cualquier conjunto fotográfico corre el peligro de encasillar la imagen en función de un tema común, aunque a la vez la libera de ese poder que raramente una fotografía en solitario ejerce desde que el momento decisivo de Henry Cartier-Bresson se quedara en los anales de la fotografía. En este siglo xxi, la imagen ya no puede detenerse ni siquiera contener un instante o idea unitaria. La imagen es digital, es un ir y venir por un atlas de referencias que, además de las impuestas por la memoria del espectador, previamente Guillermo Mora ha preparado en sus mosaicos para guiarnos por su mapa de conexiones y sensaciones. La imagen flujo, como ya anticipaba el historiador Aby Warburg, cambia la historia del arte tal y como la conocíamos para proponer una relación casi táctil o emocional con las imágenes y con nuestra experiencia. Ni la historia ni las imágenes son lineales y se suceden las unas a las otras como en un diaporama o una exposición sino que conviven en paneles.

La capacidad para indicar de la fotografía –el llamado índex que señala un elemento cualquiera para elevarlo a obra de arte– se multiplica en estas obras interactivas. Some images defy gravity and the natural order that surrounds us. This is manifest in the equilibrium running through the contact sheets of Madrid-born Guillermo Mora (Alcalá de Henares, Spain, 1980).

Through the repetition of elements, colours and simple shapes, from one moment to the next one’s view establishes relationships. His viewpoint is required to see the obvious, both playful and suggestive, inviting you to see the world the way he does. Although painting is the departure point, Mora does not merely contemplate but also pushes towards new boundaries that challenge the natural order of things. His sculptures also display this internal struggle between the different properties of objects, encompassing extremes between smoothness and craquelure, volatility and robustness.

Any photography collection runs the risk of depicting the image via a common theme, but at the same time the image is freed of these ties rarely applicable to a solitary photo since the watershed moment of Henry Cartier-Bresson in the annals of photography. In the 21st century the image may not remain immobile, nor even depict a passing moment or single idea. The image is digital, pushed and pulled by myriad reference points which in addition to being ingrained on the viewers memory, Guillermo Mora has prepared his mosaics beforehand to guide us through his chart of connections and sensations. As anticipated by historian Aby Warburg, the imagery would change the history of art and as we later learned, suggested a tangible or emotional relationship with the images and our experience. Neither History nor the images are linear or follow the other like in a diaporama or exhibition but rather they coexist.

The suggestive capacity of photography—the so-called key factor that raises the ordinary to a work of art—is multiplied in these interactive works.

Each image marks its companion, creating a playful dialogue between the images, the spectator and the author, uniting them in a cyclical space where all images, as the artist asserts, deserve a second chance. A . J . R .

Y I S H A I J U S IDM AN Entre la fantasía y el escepticismo / Between Fantasy and Scepticism

Luchar contra los efectos del modernismo en el momento actual es situarse en los márgenes de la independencia y de una libertad solitaria. Hacerlo desde la pintura es un reto que puede definir toda una obra.

El trabajo de Yishai Jusidman (México, 1963) siempre ha estado relacionado con la fotografía a través se esos conceptos que la hermanan con la pintura, desde la mirada, desde los defectos de la visión, desde los límites de la percepción de una realidad cuestionada tanto desde la pintura como desde la fotografía. En su pintura, tan conceptual como preciosista Jusidman enfrenta lo táctil (la mano) a lo óptico (el ojo), introduciendo así ese enfrentamiento entre el gesto de la mano que reina en la pintura y el del ojo, la mirada que define la fotografía. Aquí reunimos algunas imágenes de dos de sus series mutatis mutandis (2000) y Restoration (2009-2012), pero podrían haber sido otras más, ya que la fotografía acompaña a su pintura íntimamente, aunque el proceso sea un tanto dispar a lo habitual, pues la fotografía no precede a la pintura, sino que la continúa. Es lo fotográfico, más que la fotografía, lo que resalta lo pictórico, jugando siempre a ese diálogo sordo entre lo textual y lo metafórico, el píxel y el pigmento, la presencia y la ausencia. Creando una imagineria que nos devuelve a nuestra realidad cotidiana, donde todos vivimos entre la fantasía y el escepticismo. R . O .

To fight against the effects of modernism today entails the risk of standing in the sidelines of independence and a solitary freedom. To do so through painting is a challenge that can define an entire body of work. The paintings of Yishai Jusidman (Mexico, 1963) have always been linked to photography through concepts shared by these two practices, such as the gaze, the defects of vision and the limits of perception of a reality questioned from both standpoints. In his paintings, both conceptual and elaborate, Jusidman confronts touch (the hand) with vision (the eye) thus introducing that confrontation between the gesture of the hand that reigns in painting, and the gaze of the eye that defines photography. Here, we include some of the images pertaining to his series mutatis mutandis (2000) and Restoration (2009–2012), but we could have chosen any other since photography accompanies his paintings very closely. However, the process is a bit unusual since photography does not precede painting but rather continues it. The photographic referent, more than photography itself, is what highlights the painterly effects, always playing that deaf dialogue between the literal and the metaphorical, pixel and pigment, presence and absence, therefore creating an image that pulls us back to our everyday life, where we all live between fantasy and scepticism. SOL LEWITT Autobiography

Que un artista de la talla de Sol LeWitt (Hartford, EE.UU., 1928-Nueva York, 2007) elija la fotografía para contar su vida no es casualidad, sino que nos encontramos ante un medio que plantea ciertas contradicciones propias. En un principio, la fotografía se integra en sus esculturas Muybridge I y II (1964) en forma de secuencia de un cuerpo femenino al que se va aproximando. Cuatro años después, comienza su obra fotográfica con 511 instantáneas de un cubo iluminado de diferente maneras, a la que siguen Brick Wall y Color Grids. Tras estos precedentes, en 1980, su obra más representativa Autobiography agrupa fotografías de objetos cotidianos con los que convive el artista, tales como sartenes, reglas, lápices o zapatos, en grupos de nueve milimétricamente calculados. Esta repetición obsesiva e imposición de una estructura no sólo caracteriza las colecciones fotográficas, sino los recursos literarios de las listas y los inventarios que tratan de controlar, medir y organizar el caos de una vida, reducirlo a un sistema y despojarlo del sentimentalismo del devenir vital.

La frialdad metódica del archivo fotográfico de LeWitt se contextualiza dentro del minimalismo pero va mucho más allá. En su evolución hacia un arte menos formal, como es el arte conceptual, ya no impera la geometría en sí misma sino el resultado, el concepto. En este caso de la autobiografía fotográfica, lo importante no es el lenguaje en sí sino la conclusión. En una época, la del minimalismo y de las teorías de la autobiografía que defendían el lenguaje por encima del contenido, Sol LeWitt lanza esta autobiografía donde lo importante es contar su vida a través de los objetos cotidianos, imponer “un método dentro de su locura”, en palabras de Rosalind Krauss. Al igual que el minimalismo libera a la escultura de su pedestal, la fotografía de archivo libera a la imagen de su carácter unitario y de su quietud.

Cuenta una historia de vida, compuesta por fragmentos del pasado, insignificantes e igualmente importantes a la vez. Somos, en términos autobiográficos, recuerdos de lo que nunca volveremos a vivir o a ser, de los que sólo queda la memoria fotografiada. A . J . R .

That an artist of the stature of Sol Le Witt (Hartford, USA, 1928-New York, 2007) should choose photography to tell his life-story is not mere chance.

We are confronted by a medium that presents its own contradictions. Photography is in principle integrated into his sculptures Muybridge I and II (1964) as a sequential structure of a female body. Four years later he began his photographic work of 511 shots of a cube illuminated in different ways, followed

by Brick Wall and Color Grids. Following this, in 1980, his most representative work Autobiography brought together mundane objects with which the artist coexisted, like frying pans, rulers, pencils or shoes in precisely arranged groups. This obsessive repetition and the imposition of a structure not only characterizes his photographic collections the lists and inventories with which he tried to control, measure and organize his chaotic life, depriving it of all forms of sentimentality.

The methodical coldness of LeWitt’s photographic collection can be contextualized within minimalism but it goes far beyond this. In its evolution towards a less formal art-form, like conceptual art, geometry no longer was the dominant force, but the result and concept. Specifically in this photographic autobiography, what matters is not the language itself but the conclusion. At the time, when Minimalism and autobiographic theory defended language used over content, Sol LeWitt released this autobiography where priority was given to telling his life-story through everyday objects, imposing “a method to his madness”, according to Rosalind Krauss. In the same way in which Minimalism removed sculpture from its pedestal, the artist as collector unlockes its unique character and its quietness. It tells the story of his life with fragments of the past, insignificant but at the same time important. We are, in autobiographical terms, memories of what we we can no more be or live through, only photographed memory remains. A . J . R .

R U FO C R I A DO Las líneas de la vida / The Lines of Life

Rufo Criado (Aranda de Duero, 1952) es un pintor paisajista. Naturalmente, como un artista del siglo xxi, su comprensión de la naturaleza no puede ser bucólica, ni puede construirse de una forma ajena al ruido, a la velocidad, a las características de la vida actual. Pero el eligió vivir fuera de las grandes urbes, donde la búsqueda de la naturaleza real aún es posible. Donde el caminar aún tiene un significado que corre en paralelo a los surcos del camino, a las corrientes de las aguas. Las líneas rectas son frecuentes en la naturaleza, como lo son las curvas, los caminos sencillos y los enrevesados. Todo esto lo encontramos en las pinturas de Rufo Criado, donde el color, unas gamas depuradas que no podremos ver a simple vista en ningún paisaje construye otra idea de lo natural mezclándolo con la construcción cultural que es, en definitiva, lo que es la idea de paisaje. En su pintura Criado realiza una depuración, una síntesis cargada de movimiento y de velocidad de lo que sería en la era del movimiento continuo la idea de paisaje, unas pinturas donde sobresalen las líneas de fuga, las líneas que nos llevan, como los ríos en la naturaleza, las líneas de la vida. Sus fotografías son construcciones, fragmentos de detalles arquitectónicos, urbanos, que definen otro paisaje, esta vez hecho de colores y líneas quebradas, fragmentos de una realidad imposible de sintetizar y que simplemente, la fotografía fragmenta, como un bisturí preciso. La pintura y la fotografía nos muestran dos formas de definir un paisaje diferente y complementario: el intenso y que fluye en el campo, y el que asiste imperturbable, desde su insignificancia, a nuestro deambular por el mundo. Rufo Criado (Aranda de Duero, Spain, 1952) is a landscape painter. Naturally, as a 21st century artist, his comprehension of nature can not be strictly bucolic, nor can it be fabricated without embracing noise and velocity, so characteristic of modern life. However, he chose to live outside the big cities where the search for real nature is still possible, where the significance of strolling runs parallel to the road furrows and watercourses. Nature is full of straight and curved lines, of simple and convoluted paths. All of this is present in the work of Rufo Criado where a perfect range of colour—seemingly undetectable in any landscape— constructs an alternative concept of nature merged with the cultural notion of the same, which at the end, is the real meaning of a landscape. In his paintings Criado recreates distilled and synthetic landscapes loaded with movement and speed in tune with our modern era of continuous motion. His paintings are characterised by vanishing points, lines that transport us like rivers in nature; they are the lines of life. On the other hand, his photographs are constructions, fragments of architectonic or urban details that define another landscape, this time composed of broken lines and colours. The reality captured cannot be synthesised and instead is fragmented with precision through the photograph’s composition as if it were a scalpel. Both his paintings and photographs show us two ways of defining a different but complementary landscape: one that is intense and flows in the countryside, and the other which—from its insignificance—steadily helps us in our wandering through the world. Detrás de los personajes que habitan las pinturas de Guillermo Pérez Villalta (Tarifa, 1948) existe un mundo construido. Lugares donde estar, donde vivir, donde actuar. La arquitectura como paisaje y como gran madre que nos acoge en su seno. La importancia del lugar, y con ella la esencialidad del detalle. Nada en la obra de Perez Villalta ha sucedido al azar, todo procede de la experiencia y de la vida. El que fue artista de culto en su generación se ha ido transformando en lo que siempre estuvo presente en su forma de mirar y de hacer. Ha cerrado un circulo invisible y ha hecho de la cultura y del conocimiento, de la observación de lo que podría resultar imposible de imaginar, su territorio de cultivo. La fotografía, un arte largamente desarrollado por él como complemento a su mirada curiosa, nos aporta vistas de un viaje que es la propia vida. Nuevamente aquí el lugar, la construcción, es lo esencial, junto con esa otra parte intangible que adivinamos, como adivinamos vida más allá de la muerte, como pensamos que actúan y se comportan sus personajes cuando salen de la escena pintada. Estas construcciones fotografiadas podrían haber sido imaginadas en sus pinturas, construidas como escenarios de fragmentos de vidas imaginadas. R . O .

Behind the characters that live in the paintings of Guillermo Pérez Villalta (Tarifa, Spain, 1948) there is a constructed world, places to exist, live and act; architecture perceived as landscape and shelter. What’s important is the place itself and with it the essentiality of detail. Nothing in the work of Perez Villata is random, everything stems from life experiences. A cult artist to his generation, he has become that which had always been present in his way of looking and doing. He has closed an invisible circle and transformed culture, knowledge and observation of seemingly unimaginable things into a fertile space to cultivate his work. His photographs—an art form extensively developed as a complement to his curious gaze—provide us with glimpses of the journey that is life. Once again, what is essential is the place or the construction, together with that other intangible part that can only be guessed or sensed, just like we sense life after death, or imagine the way his characters will act and behave after exiting the painted scene. These photographed constructions could have very well been imagined in his paintings, built like scenarios that recreate fragments of imagined lives. R . O .

S I G MA R P OLKE Realismo capitalista / Capitalist Realism

Si en la República Democrática Alemana se impuso, tras la Segunda Guerra Mundial, el Realismo socialista, un estilo que tenía ya cierta tradición, era el que se defendía en la Unión Soviética desde la llegada al poder de Stalin, parece lógico que, en lo que podría ser considerado un acontecimiento más de la Guerra Fría, en la República Federal naciera lo que se podría considerar su contrario: el Realismo capitalista. Al menos, su nombre juega a ello, a establecer un enfrentamiento, una oposición, una pugna, con ese estilo institucionalizado de la otra Alemania. Aunque, quizás, como siempre, la historia no sea tan sencilla.

Este nuevo movimiento, que fundó Sigmar Polke (Oels, Polonia, 1941-Colonia, Alemania, 2010) junto a sus colegas Gerhard Richter y Konrad Fisher, entraba dentro de la lógica del arte pop, o así se ha querido ver, a pesar de que tenía un componente crítico que lo alejaba de algunos de los artistas pop canónicos. No se trataba simplemente de intentar traducir en el medio artístico el consumo desaforado al que estaba avocada esa sociedad alemana que se recuperaba del trauma de la guerra, de representar aquella sobreabundacia de mercancías que llenaba los escaparates de Düsseldorf, Colonia o Hamburgo, o de apropiarse del lenguaje de los medios de comunicación y la publicidad que se descubría manipulador, sino de ponerlos en cuestión, evidenciar los problemas del sistema, subrayando, incluso con humor, sus incoherencias. Quizás por eso Polke decidió fotografiar esos bodegones kitsch que se encontraba en las tiendas cuando paseaba por la ciudad, registrar los reflejos en los cristales de los escaparates que se convertían en escaparates de una sociedad que andaba a demasiada velocidad. Cientos, miles de imágenes, que ni siquiera pudo positivar, almacenándolas en su estudio. S . R .

If one considers that following World War II Socialist Realism was imposed in East Germany (a style with a certain tradition rooted in The Soviet Union after the rise to power of Stalin), a logical development of the Cold War in the Federal Republic of Germany was the birth of an opposing movement: Capitalist Realism. Its name at least established a conflict with the institutionalized style of the other Germany.

However, as is often the case, History is not quite so simple.

This new movement founded by Sigmar Polke (Oels, Poland, 1941-Cologne, Germany, 2010) together with their colleagues Gerhard Richter y Konrad Fisher, came within the remit of pop art, which people wanted to see, despite having a critical major component, distancing it from some of the more standard pop artists. This was not merely an attempt to represent artistically rampant consumerism prevalent in German society as it recovered from the trauma of the war years, representing the overabundance of merchandise in the shop windows of Dusseldorf, Cologne or Hamburg, or to appropriate the language of the media and manipulative publicity, but rather an attempt to raise concerns regarding the system, using humour to highlight its incoherencies. This may have been the motive for Polke to decide to photograph kitsch still lives which one could find in the city shops, recording the reflections of the display windows which became showcases for a society advancing too quickly. Hundreds, thousands of undeveloped images remained stored in his studio. S . R .

En las pinturas de David Salle (Norman, EE.UU., 1952) siempre hay cuerpos dibujados en blanco y negro.

Cuerpos grotescos que asociamos con el deseo, con la lujuria y con algún otro exceso natural en la vida de los cuerpos. Cuerpos que habitan pinturas multicolores como si fuera algo natural, cuando todos sabemos que es lo menos natural posible. Algo absolutamente disfuncional. En sus fotografías, todo vuelve a ser blanco y negro, como en las películas de serie B, de detectives y rubias impredecibles. Pero aquí los cuerpos se esconden, y habitan en las sombras de lugares que no tienen colores ni escenarios posibles. Sus cuerpos que se mostraron lúbricos y tan naturales en las pinturas, aquí se esconden desnudos detrás de lienzos blancos, sábanas que ocultan pero no esconden el deseo de aquellos otros cuerpos que se ofrecían sobre mesas, como manjares a la vista, desnudos pero calzados con zapatos de tacón. Una iconología tan en blanco y negro como sus fotografías. Nuevamente en estos trabajos la fotografía y la pintura suponen un continuo, una prolongación de historias y de sueños, de realidad y de misterio. Pero lo que en la pintura podía parecer grotesco y surreal, en las fotografías alcanzan un lirismo obsceno difícil de eludir. R . O .

The paintings of David Salle (Norman, USA, 1952) always incorporate bodies drawn in black and white.

These grotesque bodies can be associated with desire, lust or any other natural excess related to the body. They inhabit the multicoloured paintings like it was the most natural thing in the world, when in fact we know it is quite the opposite, something completely dysfunctional. On the other hand, his photographs depict everything in black and white, like a B movie of detectives and unpredictable blondes. But here, the bodies hide in the shadows of places lacking colours and scenarios. Those bodies that were so lubricious and natural in his paintings now hide naked behind white canvases, sheets that mask but cannot conceal the desire of those bodies lying over tables with feast foods, completely naked except for the heels on their feet; an iconology as black-and-white as his photographs. Once again, these works embrace photography and painting as a prolongation of stories and dreams, of reality and mystery. However, what seems grotesque and surreal in his paintings, reaches an inescapable obscene lyricism in the photographs. R . O .
