Cuéntame un cuento Rosa Olivares

Decía la canción popular: “cuéntame un cuento y verás que feliz me duermo”. Y nació la historia. La historia como literatura, como narración, o en su deriva como cuento. Como cuento chino, es decir, exótico, extraño, lejano, absurdo. Con el paso del tiempo la historia se convirtió en algo imprescindible, la memoria de los tiempos pasados, algo muy serio que había que estudiar, aprender, memorizar… para conociendo el pasado entender el presente y no volver, en el futuro, a cometer los mismos errores. Con el tiempo, aquellos cuentos que nos contaban para que nos durmiéramos han convertido nuestros sueños en pesadillas. Con el tiempo hemos aprendido que la historia es una ficción, efectivamente, pero de las peores. Sin libertad, escrita al dictado de los intereses de gobiernos contemporáneos, más vinculada con el momento en que se escribe que con lo que en realidad sucedió… ¿en realidad sucedió? A ciencia cierta no sabríamos distinguir entre lo que realmente sucedió y cualquier otra cosa, todo depende de que la historia, como un periodismo que cruza los siglos, nos diga que es verdad, que esto sucedió así. Nunca quedan testigos para contar lo que pasó de verdad… si quedase alguno, seguramente contaría una verdad parcial, sesgada, subjetiva, media verdad. Así las cosas admitamos que la historia es una simple y perversa creación de cada época y de cada lugar. Cada guerra la cuentan de una forma diferente vencedores y vencidos, hasta hacernos pensar que se trata de dos guerras diferentes; las crónicas oficiales dependen de los intereses del momento. Quien fue un héroe nos aparece como un traidor y una reina boba y gorda pasará a la historia, escrita por sus propios escribanos, como un ejemplo de inteligencia y perfección. Esa es la his-

toria: la gran mentira de nuestros orígenes, un cuento que reescribimos continuamente. Una verdad infinita llena de pequeñas, sucias, absurdas mentiras. Y casi siempre, una historia parcial y mal contada.

Pero, finalmente, es una suerte que cada cual pueda reescribir la historia, no solamente la suya propia e individual, sino la de todos, la del país, la del mundo. Esos grandes hechos históricos que se convierten en historia desde que surge la escritura y que antes de ese punto temporal ólo son leyendas. Los dioses se convierten en reyes, los héroes en guerreros, y la historia sigue. Esta posibilidad casi infinita, pues el pasado es casi tan infinito como el futuro (y casi igual de desconocido a juzgar por lo que cada día se descubre anulando lo que parecía ser incuestionable), ha permitido al hombre desarrollar su ingenio y al arte crear, entre otras cosas, la pintura de historia. Una pintura aburrida como pocas, falsa como todas y que se utilizaría más como propaganda que como investigación, un realismo hueco y plañidero, una belleza de cartón piedra. Escenografías del poder contadas por los artistas del poder, la quintaesencia de la historia oficial, esa que casi todos sabemos que es más falsa que las historias infantiles y que, como ellas, está llena de sentidos ocultos, de brujas, ogros y lobos feroces acechando detrás de las cortinas, de los árboles del bosque, de las torres de los palacios. Fue una pintura efímera por su propia intención de agradar, algo imperdonable en todo arte, la verdad.

En cualquier caso, el tiempo pasó y, cuenta la historia, que esa idea de escenografiar las historias no solamente llegó al teatro, sino a la propia narración y por supuesto a la representación de los hechos históricos. La teatralización de la historia era algo inevitable,

sobre todo para las historias grandilocuentes llenas de heroísmo y fatalidad que nos cuentan los libros, donde nada es sencillo, puede ser casual pero nunca sencillo. Teatralidad, escenografía, grandilocuencia, todo ello inevitable e incluso necesario para contar mentiras, bellas mentiras. Lo que casi nunca se ha utilizado es el sentido del humor, ese cinismo crítico tan querido hoy en día. Porque en su inevitable trascurso, queridos lectores, la historia ha llegado hasta hoy, mejor dicho hasta ayer y ha coincidido con la fotografía.

La fotografía es la mejor manera conocida hasta hoy de contar una mentira con toda la apariencia, la simbología y los atributos de la verdad, nada mejor para recontar, de hecho la fotografía surge para inmortalizar (que bella e histórica palabra) cosas muertas, seres muertos. Para parar el tiempo y sus protagonistas, encerrándolos en una capsula de papel ya para siempre jamás, colorín colorado. Como si fuera un cuento infantil, como si fuera arte, como si fuera historia. La fotografía, sin embargo, plantea más problemas que la pintura, nace en un momento en el que la libertad parece ya un derecho admitido por casi todos, está al alcance de cualquiera y en su bruma de blanco y negro, de artificialidad cinematográfica, encierra mucho más de lo que se ve a primera vista. Aquí la teatralidad resulta tan obvia que hay que tomársela con sentido del humor, algo que está ausente de toda la historia contada por ella misma. La fotografía, además, no se centra solamente en momentos gloriosos que marcaron los grandes caminos históricos, sino en todo aquello que ha llegado hasta hoy por caminos tortuosos, por la puerta de atrás, sin gloria alguna. Las historias malditas, las historias pequeñas, esas que seguramente son más verdaderas o al menos más ejemplares que las otras, las que no están en los libros que estudiamos.

Las anécdotas, los personajes ocultos, aquellos que seguramente fueron los protagonistas de los grandes cambios, porque de las batallas ganadas se recuerda a los generales, a los reyes, pero nadie recuerda a los miles de muertos que hicieron posible la victoria, ni a los que hicieron posible la derrota. Muertos invisibles

salvo para los cientos de miles de sus familias, hijos, hermanos… que también han querido dejar huella de su paso. Las brujas que fueron quemadas y de las que apenas sabemos el lugar, nunca los nombres, nunca los detalles, porque la vergüenza, los errores, las atrocidades, se cuentan rápidamente, de pasada, en letra pequeña, en voz baja. Pero la fotografía, y más tarde el cine, las vuelven a colocar en su sitio, en primer plano, les ponen rostros (otros pero iguales), les dan una nueva vida, una nueva presencia. Reescribir la historia hoy significa reescribir quienes somos, reconsiderar lo que creíamos bueno y lo que nos dijeron que era malo. Pensar quiénes somos y comprender que los vencidos somos siempre nosotros, testigos, estudiantes, espectadores mudos de una obra de teatro sólo regular.

Las fotografías que llenan las siguientes páginas están realizadas por hombres y mujeres de diferentes edades, nacionalidades e ideologías. Todos ellos retoman hechos, figuras, momentos de la historia general, de sus países o de otros lugares. Todos ellos las reinterpretan de formas que se alejan y se acercan a la pintura de historia, unas veces como homenaje otras como burla. Especial atención tienen los personajes, esa importancia de las caras , del retrato se convierte aquí en autorretrato, en el disfraz como identidad, en esa idea de yo soy otro, tal vez porque ciertamente todos somos ese otro al que nunca acabamos de comprender y que habita dentro de nosotros y veranea en las páginas de los libros de historia. Entre burlas y homenajes, entre verdades y mentiras, la fotografía, los fotógrafos, los artistas más característicos de hoy, retoman la narración de la historia, para transformarla, revitalizarla, quitarle majestuosidad y grandilocuencia, convirtiendo la teatralidad en una simple puesta en escena, dando una visión actual de la historia de ayer. A la vez estamos ante una rebelión y ante otra vez la historia contada en otro tiempo, una vuelta de tuerca, otra revisión que esta vez admite datos, testigos y formas que nunca antes habían tenido lugar en ninguna narración. Tell Me a Story Rosa Olivares

There was a popular song that went: “tell me a story and you’ll see how I sleep merrily”. And history was born; history as literature, as narrative, or in its derivative, as story; as tall tale, or as exotic, strange, far out or absurd yarn. Over time history became essential, the memory of the past, something very serious that had to be studied, learned, memorized…so that, with knowledge of the past, one could understand the present and avoid repeating the same errors in the future. The stories we were told so we would go to sleep have become our nightmares. We have learned that history is actually fiction of the worst kind, without freedom, written at the dictates of the interests of contemporary governments, more related to the times in which it is written than with what really happened… Did it really happen? We could not distinguish with certainty what really happened from anything else. It all depends on whether the history, like a journalism that crosses centuries, tells us what the truth is, that this happened so. There are never any witnesses to tell what really happened… if there were any, they would surely tell a partial, biased, subjective, halftruth. This being the case let us admit that history is simply a perverse creation of each era and each place. Every war is described differently by the victors and the vanquished, to the point of leading us to believe they are referring to two different wars.

The official chronicles depend on the interests of the times. Someone who was a hero seems to us like a traitor, and a fat and foolish queen will go down in history, written by her own scribes, as an example of intelligence and perfection. That is history: the great lie of our origins, a story we continually rewrite, an

endless truth full of absurd little dirty lies, and almost always a partial and poorly told history.

Ultimately, however, it is fortunate that everyone can rewrite history, not only their own individual history, but also that of everyone else, that of the whole country, the whole world. They can rewrite the historic events that became history when writing emerged, and that until then had merely been legends. The gods become kings, the heroes become warriors, and history continues. This possibility is virtually infinite, for the past is almost as infinite as the future (and almost equally unknown judging by the things that are discovered every day revoking what had previously seemed unquestionable). It has enabled man to develop his ingenuity and to create art, such as history painting, which ranks high among the most boring painting, as false as any, with its flat empty realism and fabricated beauty, it was more often used as propaganda than as exploration. Scenes of power told by artists of power, the quintessence of the official history, the one almost all of us know. It is falser than children’s stories and, like them, it is full of hidden meanings, witches, ogres and big bad wolves lurking behind the curtains, behind the trees in the forest, behind the palace towers. It was an ephemeral painting because of its intention to please, something truly unpardonable in all art.

In any case, time passed and, as the story goes, the idea of staging histories did not only makes its way into theatre, but also into the narrative form itself, and, of course, into the representation of historic events. The dramatization of history was inevitable, especially for the grandiloquent histories

full of heroism and fatality related in books, where nothing is simple, maybe fortuitous but never simple. Theatricality, staging and grandiloquence are all inevitable and even necessary for telling lies, beautiful lies. What has hardly ever been used is sense of humour, that critical cynicism so beloved these days. Indeed, in its inevitable passing, dear readers, history has arrived to today, or rather, to yesterday, and it has coincided with photography.

Photography is the best way we have ever found to tell a lie with all the semblance, symbolism and attributes of truth. There can be nothing better for recounting. In fact, photography arose to immortalize (what a beautiful and historical word) dead things, dead beings, to stop time and its protagonists, enclosing them in a paper capsule forevermore, and happily ever after. As if it were a children’s story, as if it were art, as if it were history. Photography, however, poses more problems than painting does.

It is born at a time when freedom seems to be an almost universally-accepted right. Photography is within anyone’s reach and in its black-andwhite haze, its filmic artificiality, it contains much more than it would seem at first sight. Here the theatricality is so obvious that it must be taken with a sense of humour, something that is absent from every history told by itself. Photography, moreover, does not focus only on the glorious milestones along the great historical paths, but on everything that has reached the present by way of winding paths, through the back door, deprived of glory. It tells the cursed stories, the small stories, those that are surely truer or at least more exemplary than the others, those absent from the books we study. It tells the anecdotes, of the hidden personages, those who were surely the protagonists of the great changes. To be sure, of the victorious battles, the generals and kings are those who are remembered. No one remembers the thousands of dead who made the victory possible, or those who made the defeat possible.

These dead were invisible to all but the hundreds of

thousands of families, children, brothers…who have also wanted to leave a trace of their passage. Of the witches who were burnt we might know a location, but we never know the names or the details, because the shame, the errors and the atrocities are described briefly, in passing, in small print, in hushed voices.

However, photography, and later film, puts them back in their place, in the foreground. It gives them faces (different yet equal ones). It gives them a new life, a new presence. Rewriting history today means rewriting who we are, reconsidering what we believed was good and what we were told was bad, thinking about who we are and understanding that we are always the vanquished, the witnesses, the students, the mute spectators of a mediocre theatre play.

Men and women of different ages, nationalities and ideologies made the photographs that fill the following pages. They all revisit events, figures, or moments from the general history of their countries or of other places. They all reinterpret them in ways that depart from or approach history painting, sometimes as homage, other times as mockery.

Special attention is placed on the characters. Here, the importance of faces, of the portrait, becomes self-portrait, disguise as identity, the idea that ‘I am other’, perhaps because we are all that other whom we never fully understand, who lives within us and holidays on the pages of history books.

Between spoofs and homage, truths and lies, the most characteristic contemporary photographers, photo artists, remake the narration of history, to transform it, revitalize it, divest it of majesty and grandiloquence, convert it into theatricality in a simple staging, giving the history of yesteryear a contemporary look. At the same time, we are before a rebellion and before the story told again in another time, with another twist, another revision including information, witnesses and forms that had never before found a place in any narrative. En 1791, Jacques-Louis David hacía público en el Salón de París un gran dibujo que representaba uno de los acontecimientos fundamentales de la Revolución francesa: el Juramento del Juego de Pelota del 20 de junio de 1789. Un hecho que se considero el detonante de todo lo que vino después. Los diputados del Tercer Estado se habían retirado a un edificio cercano al Palacio de Versalles, donde el rey Luis XVI había convocado los Estados Generales ante la crisis que vivía Francia, y habían prometido no abandonar su encierro hasta que se aprobara el establecimiento de una Constitución para el país. A ellos se habían unido bastantes miembros del clero, que formaba el Segundo Estado, y muy pocos, sólo dos, del Primer Estado, compuesto por la aristocracia, que temía perder sus privilegios. Finalmente, y debido a su resistencia y a que cada vez tenían más apoyos, incluso entre los nobles, Luis XVI tuvo que capitular y aceptó la institución de una Asamblea Nacional Constituyente como se habían proclamado a sí mismos.

Días después se produciría la Toma de la Bastilla, símbolo del triunfo de las ideas revolucionarias.

El dibujo de David era el boceto preparatorio para un cuadro que nunca llegó a realizarse. Se trataba de un proyecto que había pensado el artista sin que nadie se lo encargara –ya no dependía de los caprichos del monarca o de los de su familia, no necesitaba acatar las comisiones y las normas de la Academia–, y que el Club Jacobino –al que pertenecía y del que llegaría a ser presidente poco después, muy poco después, cuando empezó a radicalizarse para terminar siendo el soporte de ese régimen sangriento de la guillotina que dirigía Maximilien Robespierre–, había asumido como propio, estableciendo un sistema de suscripción que ayudaría

a sufragar los gastos, aunque no tuvo el éxito esperado y la cifra que se consideró no fue alcanzada. Las críticas tampoco fueron buenas. Había fallos en la composición y en las figuras, sin duda, pero era un esbozo, no estaba acabado. Sin embargo, los reparos que le pusieron escondían otro motivo. Tenían más que ver con algunos de los personajes retratados y el ambiente político de ese momento, que con la calidad artística del dibujo. Muchos de los que habían participado en ese Juramento del Juego de Pelota, habían empezado a ser cuestionados, ya no eran considerados héroes. Algunos incluso eran juzgados cómplices del monarca, traidores a la causa revolucionaria. Las posiciones se estaban haciendo extremas e irreconciliables. Resultaba difícil mantenerse moderado porque la sospecha reinaba y esa postura incomodaba. David decidió entonces no acabar el cuadro y la cuchilla de la guillotina terminó cortando las cabezas de algunos de los retratados. El tiempo de la pintura no pudo responder al ritmo de la Historia que iba demasiado rápido.

No obstante, se había producido un desplazamiento. Ya no era necesario remitirse al pasado clásico, al de la tradición grecolatina, a los hechos legendarios de las antiguas Grecia y Roma, porque lo que estaba sucediendo era igual de trascendente, podía equipararse porque comenzaba un mundo nuevo, un régimen distinto. Escribió al presidente de la Asamblea Nacional: “La historia de ningún pueblo me ofrece nada tan grande, tan sublime como este Juramento del Jeu de Paume que yo debo pintar. No, no necesitaré invocar a los dioses de la fábula para excitar mi genio”. Lo habían intuido ya algunos pintores ingleses y americanos que se adelantaron a David representando algunos hechos

de las guerras, la de los Siete Años y la de la Independencia, que habían tenido lugar en territorio norteamericano, y a quienes pronto seguirían otros de distintas nacionalidades, aunque fueron excepcionales. Tampoco era necesario el disimulo, el presente podía explicarse por sí mismo, no había que acudir al canon, y los ejemplos de virtud no necesitaban disfrazarse con túnicas y togas, ahora vestían hopalandas y pantalones.

De hecho, David abandonó esa idea a medida que hacía los esbozos para cada uno de los retratos de los diputados. En un principio, en su álbum de dibujos, los había pensado desnudos, como esculturas helenísticas, o con túnicas, como senadores, pero no tardó en ponerles camisa, calzas y levitas. No resultaba adecuado transformar un hecho tan relevante en un baile de máscaras, por mucho que la norma neoclásica lo pidiera.

El juramento ya no era el que hicieron los Horacios, de lectura demasiado ambigua, que contentaba a unos y a otros, a los conservadores y a los progresistas: Horacio podía ser considerado como el rey padre o como una alegoría ilustrada del estado y su historia podía relacionarse con una llamada a luchar por la monarquía o con la renuncia al beneficio individual por el bien común del que hablaba el Contrato Social de Jean-Jacques Rousseau.

Había llegado el momento en el que tampoco Sócrates y Séneca necesitaban sacrificarse una y otra vez por Atenas y Roma, ya lo iban a hacer Louis-Michel Lepeletier, marqués de Saint-Fargeau, Jean-Paul Marat, el amigo del pueblo, y Joseph Bara, el tamborilero adolescente, que fueron asesinados por la Revolución o a causa de ella. Había que construir las imágenes de estos mártires, y David volvió a hacerlo, pero cambió la historia, la contó de forma diferente, de un modo interesado, como ha sucedido siempre. Esos retratos de moribundos ilustres no eran únicamente un homenaje, sino que debían servir de propaganda de las ideas jacobinas, fueron utilizadas para justificar lo que estaba viniendo, el Terror. Por eso, la hija de Lepeletier, monárquica, destruyó la pintura de su padre cuando se la dieron. No quería recordar que el marqués de SaintFargeau había votado a favor de la ejecución de Luis XVI. Con La muerte de Bara se fue más allá, porque se pensó como una manera de alentar a los jóvenes a que participaran en las guerras que se estaban librando debido a que los alistamientos habían descendido. Se les prometía incluso un tambor para que pudieran imitarle, sentirse Bara, aunque nunca quedó claro qué

sucedió en realidad: si había muerto gritando “¡viva la república!”, cuando unos soldados monárquicos le pidieron que dijera “¡viva el rey!”, o fue víctima de unos ladrones de caballos. Quizás por eso, David no terminó la pintura o puede que fuera porque el cuadro que le tenía que acompañar, que era su pareja, el de La muerte de Dampierre, que falleció herido en la batalla, sólo se quedó en boceto porque se descubrió que había pactado con el enemigo. Otra vez la historia era más veloz que la pintura.

En este tratar de establecer la Historia, una Historia indiscutible, los hechos se manipulaban y sus representaciones trataban de establecer el fraude, deteniendo el momento, fijando el instante. En El último suspiro de Marat, David alteró el suceso e intentó borrar a Charlotte Corday del cuadro: no se podía pintar a una criminal, su rostro tenía que ser olvidado, estaba condenada a no ser recordada, damnatio memoriae. Sin embargo, no pudo hacerlo, era inevitable que de algún modo estuviera presente, si no, el hecho no tendría sentido. Utilizó el recurso de la metonimia para introducirla: ella era el cuchillo ensangrentado y los documentos que aparecían en el cuadro, esos que siempre se ha pensado que certifican una verdad. La retrata como bodegón para convertirla en un monstruo. Es también un fantasma amenazador que se sitúa al lado del espectador cuando mira al revolucionario muriente, tal es la construcción del espacio. La carta que Corday escribió a Marat para ser recibida en su presencia (una carta que nunca llegó a entregar, no tuvo tiempo, y que ahora sin embargo sostiene en una mano el amigo del pueblo), la presenta –el lenguaje siempre ha sido importante y David lo modifica para lograr su objetivo– como una aristócrata reaccionaria, una solterona demasiado culta que no asume el papel pasivo que como mujer le correspondía jugar en la Historia, y que contrasta con la viuda de un héroe de guerra, madre entregada, a la que está dedicado el billete que en el cuadro parecía estar redactando el jacobino cuando su corazón fue atravesado por el cuchillo.

Se trataba de una nota en la que Marat ordenaba que se le diera a la viuda un donativo para ayudarla en su situación desesperada, aunque parece que lo que estaba haciendo el revolucionario era prepararse para apuntar la lista con los nombres de los girondinos que Corday había sugerido que iba delatar, girondinos que hubiesen acabado decapitados públicamente en una plaza de París. inamovible, sino que hay historias, muchas y mudables, porque dependen de quién, cuándo y cómo las cuente.

David pareció intuirlo. Ya no se podía contar la Historia, con mayúscula, que él pretendía, y regresó al pasado para explicar el presente, ahora su presente, en esa Intervención de la Sabinas, un cuadro de reconciliación pero que hablaba de él mismo como artista, igual que hará también en Leónidas en las Termópilas, una pintura de la nostalgia, de lo que se había perdido y ya no se podía recuperar, del fracaso de esa Revolución fraternal, la de él y sus hermanos, que acabó en Imperio, y también premonitoria, de lo que estaba por venir, del desastre del Imperio y el regreso del absolutismo de los borbones, de una vuelta atrás, del regreso al comienzo, aunque nada volvería a ser igual.

Nostálgica y premonitoria es también la serie que Eleanor Antin, que ha hurgado en el pasado en muchas de sus obras, creando imágenes de –imaginando– aquello que fue borrado del discurso de la Historia o que hubiese sido suprimido del Gran Relato de haber existido, dedica a Los últimos días de Pompeya. En ella se figura lo que sucedió basándose en la pintura de historia del siglo XIX, esa pintura pompier que triunfaba en los salones de París y Londres y que construyó las imágenes de una Antigüedad entre cursi y kitsch, imágenes

adulteradas y dulcificadas, de oro y colores pastel, que fueron las que de algún modo se impusieron en el imaginario colectivo, Grecia y, sobre todo, Roma con algo de Arcadia, incluso cuando estaba en Decadencia, una Decadencia a la que unos pocos aspiraban en el fin de siglo. Pero estas Grecia y Roma eran también Francia e Inglaterra. Las potencias tenían que justificarse a través de otros, de lo que había sucedido antes, pero no vieron que el desastre era inminente. Por eso Antin elige esos días previos a la erupción del Vesuvio, hay algo siniestro en las imágenes felices anteriores a la catástrofe. Utiliza la misma estrategia que Edward Bulwer-Lytton en su novela. Si en el libro del británico Pompeya era una metáfora del Londres del período de la Regencia y el reinado de Jorge IV, aquí lo es de la despreocupada costa Oeste estadounidense de comienzos del siglo XXI, un lugar que permanece ajeno a lo que pronto sucedería, que no es consciente de lo que se avecina: los atentados del 11 de septiembre. En esta ocasión, el arte parece haberse adelantado a lo que iba a ocurrir, la Historia llegaba con retraso por una vez.

History Painting Sergio Rubira

In 1791, at the Salon in Paris, Jacques-Louis David presented a large drawing that illustrated one of the key events in the French Revolution: the Tennis Court Oath of June 20, 1789. It was an event that sparked everything that came after. The deputies from the Third Estate had withdrawn to a building near the Palace of Versailles, where King Louis XVI had called a meeting of the Estates-General in light of the crisis faced by France. And they had pledged not to call off their sit-in until the establishment of a Constitution for the country had been approved. They had been joined by several members of the clergy, who were part of the Second Estate, and very few –just two– from the First Estate, made up of aristocrats, who feared losing their privileges. In the end, due to their resistance and because of the increasing amount of support they enjoyed, even among the nobility, Louis XVI was forced to capitulate and accept the institution of a National Constitutional Assembly, as they called themselves.

The Storming of the Bastille, a symbol of the triumph of the revolutionary ideas, took place days later.

The drawing by David was a preparatory sketch for a painting he never completed. It was a project that the artist had conceived without any anyone ordering it – he no longer depended on the whims of the monarch or of the royal family, he wasn’t required to follow the commissions and the standards of the Academy–, and that the Jacobin Club –which he belonged to and would preside a short time later, very soon after, when he became more radical and ended up supporting the bloody regime of the guillotine led by Maximilien Robespierre–, had taken up as its own, establishing a subscription system that would help cover the expenses, though it was not as successful as expected

and the amount he had in mind was not reached. The critiques were not good either. There were mistakes in the composition and in the figures, to be sure, but it was a draft, not a completed work. However, the objections raised hid another motive. They had more to do with some of the people portrayed and the political atmosphere of the time than with the artistic quality of the drawing. Many of those who had participated in The Tennis Court Oath were starting to be questioned; they were no longer considered heroes. Some were even judged to be accomplices of the monarch and traitors to the revolutionary cause. Positions were becoming extreme and irreconcilable. It was difficult to remain moderate, because suspicion was rampant and that posture was uncomfortable. David then decided not to finish the painting, and the blade of the guillotine ended up cutting off the heads of some of those in the portrait. The time of the painting could not keep up with the pace of History, which was moving too quickly.

Yet movement had been made. It was no longer necessary to turn to the classical past, to the GrecoRoman tradition, to the legendary events of ancient Greece and Rome, because what was happening was just as important. It was on the same level because a new world was dawning; a different regime. He wrote to the president of the National Assembly: “No story of any people offers me anything as grand, as sublime as this Tennis Court Oath that I must paint. No, I will not need to invoke the gods of fables to awaken my genius.” Some English and American painters sensed it first and beat David to it, representing some events of the Seven Years’ War and the War of Independence, which had taken place in North America. And they would soon be followed by others of different

nationalities, although they were the exceptions. Nor was concealing necessary. The present could explain itself. It wasn’t necessary to rely on canon. And the examples of virtue did not need to be dressed in tunics and togas; now they dressed in houppelandes and pantaloons. In fact, David gave up on that idea as he completed the sketches for each of the portraits of the deputies. Initially, in his sketchbook, he had thought of nudes, like Hellenistic sculptures, or with tunics, like senators, but he soon ended up putting them in shirts, breeches and frocks. It was not appropriate to transform such a relevant event into a masquerade ball, no matter how much the neoclassical standards demanded it.

The oath was no longer what the Horaces of the past had done, with an excessively ambiguous reading that kept both sides happy, conservatives and progressives: Horace could have been considered the king father or an illustrated allegory of the state, and his story could be interpreted as a call to fight for the monarchy or renounce individual benefits for the common good that Jean-Jacques Rousseau spoke of in his Social Contract.

The time had come in which neither Socrates nor Seneca needed to sacrifice themselves again and again for Athens and Rome. That would now be done by Louis-Michel Lepeletier, marquis of SaintFargeau; Jean-Paul Marat, the friend of the people; and Joseph Bara, the drummer boy, who were killed by the Revolution or because of it. Images needed to be created of these martyrs, and David did it again.

But he changed the story. He told it differently, with self-interest, as has always happened. Those portraits of illustrious people dying were not only a tribute, but they were to serve as propaganda for the Jacobin ideals. They were used to justify what was coming: the Terror. That is why the daughter of Lepeletier, a royalist, destroyed the painting of her father when they gave it to her. She did not want to be reminded that the marquis of Saint-Fargeau had voted in favor of the execution of Louis XVI. With The Death of Bara he went even further, because it was conceived as a way to encourage young people to participate in the wars that were being waged, as enlistments had declined. They were even promised a drum so that they could imitate him, feel as though they were Bara, although it was never clear what actually happened: whether he had died shouting “long live

the republic!”, when royalist soldiers asked him to say “long live the king!”, or whether he was killed by horse thieves. Perhaps that’s why David never finished the painting. Or maybe it was because the painting that was to accompany it, which was its partner, The Death of Dampierre, who died wounded in battle, was never more than a sketch because it was discovered that he had made a pact with the enemy. Once again history was faster than the painting.

In this attempt to establish History, an undisputed History, the facts were manipulated and their representations attempted to establish the fraud, detaining the moment, fixing the instant. In The Death of Marat, David changed the event and tried to remove Charlotte Corday from the painting: he couldn’t paint a criminal, her face had to be forgotten, she was condemned not to be remembered, damnatio memoriae. However, he couldn’t do it. It was inevitable that she should be present in some way; otherwise the event would make no sense. He used metonymy to include her: she was the bloody knife and the documents that appeared in the painting, the ones that have always been thought to certify a truth. He portrays her as a still life to turn her into a monster.

She is also a threatening ghost positioned beside the viewer when looking at the dying revolutionary, such is the construction of the space. The letter that Corday wrote to Marat to gain an audience with him (a letter she never delivered –she didn’t have time– and yet now the friend of the people holds in his hand) was presented –language has always been important and David modifies it to achieve his objective– as a reactionary aristocrat, an excessively cultured spinster who does not play the passive role that History set aside for her, and that contrasts with the widow of a war hero, dedicated mother, to whom the note that the Jacobin appears to have been writing when his heart was pierced by the knife was dedicated. It was a note in which Marat ordered that a donation be made to the widow to help her in her desperate situation, although it seems that what the revolutionary was doing was to prepare to write down the list of names of the Girondists that Corday had suggested she would denounce, Girondists who would have ended up decapitated publicly in a square in Paris. No one was innocent, as we now know. Likewise, we know that there is not just one single, fixed History, rather there are many variable stories that depend on who tells them, when and how.

David seemed to sense that. He could no longer explain History, with a capital “H”, as he had planned to. And he returned to the past to explain the present, what was then his present, in The Intervention of the Sabine Women, a painting of reconciliation, but that spoke of himself as an artist, as would Leonidas at Thermopylae, a painting of nostalgia, of what had been lost and could not be recovered, of the failure of the Brotherly Revolution, his and his brothers’, which ended in Empire, and also a premonition of what was to come, of the disaster of the Empire and the return to the absolutism of the Bourbons, a return to the past, back to the beginning, even though nothing would ever be the same.

Nostalgic and premonitory also describes the series that Eleanor Antin, who has dug into the past in many of her works, creating images of –imagining– what was wiped from the pages of History or what was deleted from the Great Tale, if it had existed, dedicated to The Last Days of Pompeii. In it she imagines what happened based on the 149th-century painting of the story, the Pompier painting that was so popular at the salons of Paris and London and that built images of Antiquity somewhere between affected and kitsch;

adulterated and sweetened images, in gold and pastel colors, which were somehow imprinted into the collective imagery: Greece and especially Rome, with a bit of Arcadia, even when it was in Decadence, a Decadence to which few aspired at the close of the century. But Greece and Rome were also France and England. The powers had to justify themselves through others, through what had happened before, but they didn’t see the imminent disaster. That’s why Antin chose those days prior to the eruption of Mount Vesuvius; there is something sinister in the happy images before the catastrophe. She uses the same strategy as Edward Bulwer-Lytton in his novel. While in the British author’s book Pompeii was a metaphor for London during the Regency and the reign of George IV, here it represents the carefree American West Coast in the early 21st century; a place that remained oblivious to what was about to take place: the attacks of September 11th. This time, art seems to have preceded what was going to happen. History was late for a change.

CODEX Ann-Sofi Sidén

Ann-Sofi Sidén reconstruye una historia del pasado, sin testigos directos. Se trata de una historia reconstruida y escenificada en la que cataloga tipologías de delitos que históricamente sólo se adjudican a mujeres, tales como la brujería, la prostitución, el aborto, etc. Delitos de mujer que ejemplifica en casos singulares de la historia de su país, y que escenifica en blanco y negro en unas imágenes que son como ilustraciones, acompañadas de los textos que las explican. Se trata de una apelación, de retomar un ejemplo histórico para llamar la atención ante un futuro en el que tal vez la mujer siga siendo también, todavía, aunque de una manera diferente, la única víctima de determinadas, la única responsable ante la sociedad. Siempre cargando sobre sus hombros el peso del mundo, centrado ese peso en todo lo que la mujer protagoniza, básicamente lo más esencial: la vida y la muerte. Pero también nos habla del miedo, del miedo de una sociedad de hombres frente a mujeres aparentemente débiles pero a la vez capaces de hacer temblar los cimientos de una sociedad fuertemente asentada.

Sidén trabaja con la idealización y reproducción de un mundo reducido a imágenes a partir de unos datos jurídicos, de unas historias legales de juicios y condenas que se pierden en una memoria que inevitablemente mezcla la realidad y el mito, la legislación y los miedos atávicos de la humanidad. Ann-Sofi Sidén reconstructs a story from the past, there are no direct witnesses. It is a reconstructed and staged story in which she catalogues typologies of crimes that have historically been attributed to women, such as witchcraft, prostitution, abortion, etc. Women’s crimes that she exemplifies in singular cases from the history of her country, and that she sets in black-and-white images resembling illustrations, accompanied by explanatory texts of each case. It is an appeal, a reconsideration of a historical example to attract attention toward a future in which women may continue to be, still, responsible by society. Always bearing the weight of the world on their shoulders, that weight concentrating everything in which women play an important part, basically or most essentially: life and death. But Sidén also speaks to us of fear, of the fear of a society of men before women who are apparently weak yet also capable of shaking the foundations of a wellestablished society. She works with idealization and reproduction of a world reduced to images through juridical data, through legal stories of trials and convictions that are lost in memory that inevitably mixes reality and myth, legislation and humanity atavistic fears. Not a Care: A Short History of Health Care Carol Condé & Karl Beveridge

Entre 1998 y 1999, Condè y Beveridge participaron en una serie de talleres educativos para trabajadores en asistencia sanitaria, miembros del Sindicato Internacional de Empleados de Servicio (SEIU). Los artistas hablaron con ellos sobre sus trabajos y la actual crisis del sistema sanitario en Canadá. Basándose en estas conversaciones y a partir de una investigación adicional sobre la historia de la asistencia sanitaria, se hizo aparente que había habido un cambio fundamental en las actitudes hacia ella. El concepto que está detrás del proyecto lo provocó el repetido comentario de los trabajadores mayores de que no podían dar la misma calidad de asistencia que hace 20 años. Muchos de estos trabajadores se resentían por el hecho de que no eran capaces de ofrecer el cuidado para el que fueron formados, el cual había sido la razón por la que muchos de ellos habían entrado originalmente en este campo.

In 1998–99, Condé and Beveridge participated in a number of union educational workshops held for health care workers, members of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU). The artists talked with them about their jobs and the current heath care crisis in Canada. Based on these conversations and from additional research into the history of health care, it became apparent that there had been a fundamental shift in attitudes about caring. The concept behind the project was triggered by the oft repeated comment by older health care workers that they were not able to give the same quality of care they were able to 20 years before. Many of these workers resented the fact that they were not able to give the care they were trained to do, which had been the reason why many of them had originally entered the field.

Not a Care is a history of caring from early times up to the present health care crisis in Canada. A series of 12 images depict how people were cared for at various points in history and follows a patient growing up from birth through to old age. A caregiver is portrayed from each period along with the relevant medical technology (flint knives to CAT scans) and medicine (herbs to pills) and who, in each case, benefited from them. C & B

En 1964, con la euforia por la recién ganada independencia aún fresca, Zambia lanzó su primer programa espacial. Su objetivo era mandar doce astronautas y diez gatos a la luna, superando así el reto que exhibían Estados Unidos y la Unión Soviética en plena carrera espacial.

Pocas personas apoyaron entonces la ambiciosa iniciativa de Edward Makuka, un profesor de secundaria zambiano que estaba al mando del proyecto y que se encargó de difundirlo y buscar financiación sin demasiado éxito.

Como anécdota la iniciativa constituye un detalle exótico y tierno dentro de la sangrienta historia africana pero también un ejemplo de la grandeza del ser humano y su capacidad de superación.

Basándome en la increíble pero cierta noticia de hace 50 años, con esta serie de fotos reconstruyo las escenas que podrían haberla documentado entonces y refuerzo su veracidad añadiéndole a esa certeza mi carga personal y el fruto de mi imaginación.

El resultado es un fábula entrañable que tiene como trasfondo el espíritu de superación y la persecución de los sueños, pero que también tiene como moraleja la resignación inevitable ante un mundo y una realidad que concede pocas excepciones a la lógica del mercado y sus potencias. C M

In 1964, when the euphoria over its recently won independence was still fresh, Zambia launched its first space program. The objective was to send twelve astronauts and ten cats to the moon, thus meeting the challenge posed by the United States and the Soviet Union in the midst the space race.

At the time few people supported the ambitious enterprise of Edward Makuka, a Zambian secondary school teacher who was directing the project and also took it upon himself to promote it and seek funding, without much success.

The endeavor embodies an exotic and endearing anecdote in Africa’s bloody history, as well as an example of the greatness of human beings and their capacity to overcome difficulties.

With this photo series based on the incredible yet true news story from 50 years ago, I reconstruct the scenes that could have documented it then, and I reinforce its veracity by adding to the facts my personal perspective and the fruit of my imagination.

The result is an endearing fable imbued with the spirit of overcoming struggle and realizing dreams, while also conveying the moral that resignation is inevitable in a world and a reality that allows few exceptions to the rules of the market and its powers. C M TRANSLATED BY DENA ELLEN COWAN

Disco Angola Stan Douglas

Reconstruir algo pasado tiene siempre un aliciente curativo, una especie de recordatorio de lo que algo fue en pos de superarlo. Comparar dos contextos radicalmente diferentes para ver en ellos lo que hay de común es parte de lo que Stan Douglas hace en Disco Angola. Desde el Nueva York previo a la bancarrota, en los primeros años de la era disco, antes de que abriera el mítico Studio 54, a una Angola que lucha contra la colonización portuguesa y antes de que estallara la guerra civil que durante 27 años asolaría el país. Y es que Douglas toma aquí el papel del que mira, del que fotografía en la sombra de los acontecimientos a modo de observador testigo, neutral (como si esto fuera realmente posible). Un personaje ficticio, que es reportero y periodista, le camufla entre ambos mundos, opuestos, imposibles de comparar (¿o sí?). La mezcla del comienzo del disco y de la revolución en Angola sin duda nos muestra las posibilidades de lo que parece en calma, de lo previo al cambio, a la caída. En esta fiesta de opuestos los soldados bailan capoeira, y los invitados al baile miran aburridos a la cámara, con pocas ganas de moverse o bailan esa canción, Kung Fu Fighting, que enseñaba a ser Bruce Lee. “A luta continua” para una joven que mira sin afán a la cámara y que parece preparada para la pista de baile. ¿Quién está en la discoteca y quién en Angola? Se llegan a confundir. ¿Puede ser Douglas un reportero, sin más?

No lo parece, al menos no en esta serie, donde la conexión entre Nueva York y Angola se acorta. S G

Rebuilding something from the past always has a healing power; a sort of reminder of what something was in order to get over it. Comparing two radically different worlds and finding commonality in them is part of what Stan Douglas does in Disco Angola. From pre-market-crash New York, in the early years of the disco era, before the mythical Studio 54 opened, to Angola fighting against Portuguese colonization, before the outbreak of the civil war that devastated the country for 27 years. Here, Douglas takes on the role of the watcher, of a photographer in the shadows of the events as an observing witness, neutral (as if that were really possible). A fictional character –a reporter and a journalist–, he camouflages himself between both worlds, opposites, impossible to compare (or are they?).

The blend of the dawn of disco and the revolution in Angola clearly shows the possibilities of what appears to be the calm before change, before the fall. In this festival of opposites, soldiers dance capoeira, while guests look disinterestedly at the camera, with little desire to move or dance to that song, Kung Fu Fighting, which taught them how to be Bruce Lee. “A Luta Continua”: the fight goes on for a young woman who looks vaguely at the camera and seems ready to hit the dance floor. Who’s at the disco and who’s in Angola? Reality becomes blurred.

Can Douglas be nothing more than a reporter? It wouldn’t seem so, at least not in this series, where the distance between New York and Angola becomes shorter. SG TRANSLATED BY THE NOMAD FISH

Flashback Tom Hunter

La cara visible del museo son las colecciones que contiene; esas pinturas, esculturas, objetos decorativos, máscaras tribales, armaduras medievales, animales disecados… que se visten de largo para que el visitante los disfrute, los haga suyos por un momento y los viva mientras recorre las salas. Sin embargo, antes de esta puesta en escena final, alguien tuvo que colocarlas, ordenarlas, pensarlas para que adquieran todo su sentido en el museo. Ese es el protagonista anónimo al que nos enfrentamos en las exposiciones, el personal del museo, casi siempre oculto, entre bambalinas (y oficinas), como un rostro misterioso que sabemos que ha estado pero que ya no podemos identificar. Tom Hunter comienza su serie Flashback en 2009 para celebrar la apertura de las nuevas galerías del Londres moderno en el Museo de la ciudad. El personal que trabaja en este espacio se convierte en protagonista de un regreso al pasado en el que los objetos atesorados ayudan a crear un ambiente de tiempo pretérito. Una sufragista apoyada en la barra del pub, con todo listo para la protesta, es, en realidad, una actual defensora de los derechos de gais y lesbianas en Reino Unido. El fotógrafo establece conexiones entre la historia pasada y la actual, y la necesidad de repensar hasta qué punto las cosas han cambiado. Sus retratos beben directamente de las fuentes clásicas de la pintura inglesa, de un Reynolds o un Lawrence. The visible side of the museum is made up of its collections; the paintings, sculptures, decorative objects, tribal masks, medieval suits of armour, stuffed animals... that put on their Sunday best for visitors to enjoy, to make their own for a moment and to experience as they wander through the rooms. But before this final staging, someone had to put them in their places, arrange them, think about them so that they would make complete sense within the museum.

That is the anonymous figure we meet through the exhibits: the museum staff, nearly always hidden, behind the scenes (and in the offices), like a mysterious face that we know has been there but that we cannot identify. Tom Hunter began the Flashback series in 2009, to celebrate the opening of the new galleries in modern London, in the London Museum. The staff who work in this space become the central figures in a return to the past in which the treasured objects help create an atmosphere of times gone by. A suffragette leaning against the bar at the pub, ready to protest, is actually a real-life defender of gay and lesbian rights in the United Kingdom. The photographer makes connections between past history and the present, and the need to rethink to what extent things have actually changed. His portraits draw directly on the classical sources of English painting, from Reynolds or from Lawrence. The artist revives the old masters with modern images that conjure up the United Kingdom’s most well-known past. And the museum, a container that strives to make sense out of History, becomes here confusion, a story, a staged, costumed, dramatized tale. Tierra arrasada Óscar Farfán

A inicios de la década de mil novecientos ochenta Centro América es una de las arenas estratégicas de la Guerra Fría. En Guatemala se libra entonces el momento más cruento de la guerra civil. Con apoyo financiero estadounidense y logístico israelí el Estado guatemalteco lleva a cabo un plan militar encaminado a aniquilar la base social rural de la guerrilla. A esta ofensiva contrainsurgente se le dio el título de estrategia de Tierra Arrasada. Fue un ejercicio de limpieza étnica en el que el ejército guatemalteco con lujo de violencia barrió con más de cuatrocientas comunidades indígenas. Hoy día, donde antes se localizaron poblados en apariencia no queda nada; las casas se reedificaron años después en las cercanías, sus habitantes se reubicaron en zonas distantes, o simplemente las aldeas en cuestión dejaron de existir.

Las piezas que comprenden este proyecto, fotografías y textos inicialmente destinadas al gran formato y a paredes de galería, operan como registros de esos sitios desiertos y lo acontecido en ellos. Son paisajes y locaciones sin artificio: el sentido que generan se devela a partir de lo que omiten.

Exhiben además un relato no ajeno a mí como autor, que en esos años y desde el otro polo de la represión, la ciudad, salí de Guatemala hacia un exilio perenne.

El proyecto Tierra Arrasada busca en vano dirimir una deuda personal. Su razón se ubica en la impronta que opone a la amnesia y la omisión históricas a propósito de un pasado común a todos, humano en su noción más elemental: en el conflicto armado guatemalteco, en un país de entonces diez millones de habitantes, murieron doscientas mil personas, más que en las guerras y dictaduras de El Salvador, Nicaragua, Chile y Argentina juntas. Cerca del ochenta y cinco por ciento de los que murieron eran indígenas.

El título de las piezas fotográficas corresponde al nombre de la comunidad donde se ubican las sitios arrasados. Cada una de ellas se adscribe a extractos de testimonios, o testimonios completos, de quienes vivieron u observaron lo que en los espacios representados sucedió. O F

In the early 1980s Central America was one of the strategic arenas of the Cold War. At that time the bloodiest period of the civil war was being waged in Guatemala. With financial support from the United States and logistics from Israel the Guatemalan State carried out a military plan designed to annihilate the rural social base of the guerilla forces. This counterinsurgency offensive was dubbed the Scorched Earth policy. It was an exercise of ethnic cleansing in which the Guatemalan army, deploying extraordinary violence, wiped out more than four hundred indigenous communities. Today, there are no apparent remnants of formerly populated areas; the houses were rebuilt years later in the vicinity, their inhabitants relocated to distant regions, or the villages simply ceased to exist.

The pieces for this project, photographs and texts conceived from the outset as large format reproductions for gallery walls, operate as records of those deserted sites and what happened in them.

They are straightforward landscapes and locations: the meaning they generate is revealed by what they omit.

They also convey a story that is familiar to me as an author, who during those years and from the other end of the repression, the city, left Guatemala destined for a perennial exile. The project Tierra Arrasada (Scorched Earth) tries in vain to settle a personal debt. Its reason for being lies in an ingrained opposition to historical amnesia and omission concerning a past we all share.

In a country that numbered ten million inhabitants at that time, two hundred thousand people died, more than in the wars and dictatorships of El Salvador, Nicaragua, Chile and Argentina together. Close to eighty-five percent of those who died were indigenous.

The titles of the photography pieces are the names of the communities that were obliterated from the sites. Every one of them is associated with partial or complete testimonies of those who experienced or observed what happened in the places that are represented. O F TRANSLATED BY DENA ELLEN COWAN

Devil’s Den es un proyecto que se opone al espectáculo y el capital durante la reconstrucción de la batalla de Gettysburg en su 150 aniversario.

Hay algo fascinante a la vez que admonitorio sobre el espectáculo del 150 aniversario, un choque entre los viejo y lo nuevo. Con trescientos mil turistas y quince mil actores la primera semana de julio es una gran atracción comercial para la pequeña ciudad de Gettysburg (7000 habitantes). Se trata de una ciudad bastante inusual: el campo de batalla actúa como reemplazo para los grandes estadios deportivos y está equipado con stands y concesionarios de primera categoría. Esta ciudad gira en torno a 1863 sobreviviendo sólo por la burbuja económica del turismo de guerra.

Devil’s Den celebra tanto la teatralidad de la batalla como se cuestiona la popularidad de una violencia espectacularizada. ¿Qué significa reconstruir una batalla sin la sangre, la avaricia y el dolor de la guerra? ¿Era una celebración del nacimiento del país como lo conocemos, o una huída de un entorno nacional asentado profundamente en la incertidumbre, la división y la deuda? Devil’s Den is a project contending with spectacle and capital during the reenactment of the Battle of Gettysburg on its 150 anniversary.

There’s something fascinating as well as cautionary about the spectacle of the 150th Anniversary; a collision between old and new. With 300,000 tourists and 15,000 re-enactors the first week of July is a huge commercial draw for the small town of Gettysburg, PA (population 7,000). A rather unusual town, the battlefield acts as a replacement for huge sports stadium and is fully equipped with grand stands and concessions. This town revolves around 1863 surviving solely on an economic bubble of war tourism.

Devil’s Den both celebrates the theatricality of the battle ad questions the popularity of sensationalized violence. What does it mean to re-enact a battle without the gore, avarice, pain and blood of war? Was this celebration of the birth of the country as we know it, or an escape from a national environment a deepseated uncertainty, division and debt? G & O

Teatro de guerra Mikel Bastida

Durante los dos últimos años, Mikel Bastida ha recorrido Europa Occidental y Oriental recreando la figura de un fotógrafo de la Segunda Guerra Mundial en diversas reconstrucciones históricas, donde grupos de re-enactors representan diferentes episodios bélicos en escenarios históricos y campos de batalla ficticios.

La serie constituye una búsqueda de esos paisajes que la historia ha convertido en literarios. Escenarios construidos a partir de las diferentes representaciones de la guerra, desde el cine a las fotografías de época, y convertidos en enormes decorados donde la recreación y la simulación dejan al descubierto un imaginario colectivo.

El naturalismo fotográfico, la definición de la realidad desde la cámara, no permite personajes ficticios, aunque sí imaginarios. Figuras reales transformadas en protagonistas de una falsa épica, arquetipos de un relato que ha impregnado toda la cultura popular hasta conseguir que la realidad tan solo interese cuando es mitificada por su representación.

Es la mirada del fotógrafo quien crea este universo a través de la cámara. Espacios y personajes que tan solo existen en el mínimo instante fotográfico, fragmentos de una realidad que anhela enmascarar su naturaleza efímera al ser representada. M B

Over the past two years, Mikel Bastida has travelled across Eastern and Western Europe, acting as a World War II photographer in a variety of historical reenactments, where groups of re-enactors recreate different battles at historical sites and on fictional battlefields.

The series is a search for the landscapes that History has turned into literature. Stages build from the different representations of war, from film to photographs of the period, turned into monumental sets on which recreation and simulation uncover a collective imaginary world.

Photographic naturalism, the definition of reality made by the camera, does not allow for fictional characters, rather only imaginary ones. Real figures transformed into the main characters of a false epic work, archetypes in a story that have impregnated all popular culture to the point where reality is of interest only when made mythical by its representation.

It is the eye of the photographer who creates this universe through the camera. Spaces and characters that exist only in the fleeting photographic instant, fragments of a reality that long to mask their ephemeral nature by being represented. M B TRANSLATED BY THE NOMAD FISH

Emeric Lhuisset Theatre of War

La pintura de historia, asumida durante siglos como documento visual de un acontecimiento destacado, se pone en cuestión en el trabajo de Emeric Lhuisset. El artista parece preguntarse: “¿hasta qué punto la representación de la historia es real?”. En su proyecto Theatre of War se inspira en las pinturas de la guerra francoprusiana de 1870 poniendo de manifiesto que la puesta en escena es un elemento fundamental en la representación del conflicto. Sin embargo, esta simulación de la batalla es, aún hoy y de algún modo, un tabú, como si comprobar que las fotos son posados quitase realismo a lo que vemos. Lhuisset pide a combatientes de la guerrilla kurda que se conviertan en autores de la instantánea, simulando lo más real posible cómo fue la batalla de la que fueron protagonistas. Formado en Bellas Artes y fotoperiodismo, Lhuisset intenta mostrar cómo la foto de guerra es también una ficción, o más bien una realidad ficcionada.

Cuando miramos las imágenes clásicas del fotoperiodismo, muchas de las cuales se han convertido en iconos visuales, no podemos evitar pensar en la parte de posado que hay en ellas. ¿Cómo representamos, entonces, la guerra hoy? El teatro de la guerra es un posado, un intento por hacer de la batalla un icono a través de la ficción de la misma. S G

The painting of history, accepted for centuries as visual documentation of a major event, is questioned in the work of Emeric Lhuisset. The artist seems to ask himself: “to what extent is the representation of history real?” In his Theater of War project, he finds inspiration in the paintings of the 1870 Franco-Prussian War, highlighting the fact that the staging is a key element in representing the conflict. However, this simulation of the batter is, even today, taboo to a certain degree, as if discovering that the photos were staged eliminates realism from what we are seeing. Lhuisset asks Kurdish guerrilla fighters to become actors in the snapshot, simulating as realistically as possible what the battles they were in were like. Educated in Fine Arts and Photojournalism, Lhuisset attempts to show how war photographs are also fiction, or rather fictionalized reality.

When we look at the classic photojournalism images, many of which have become visual icons, it’s hard not to think of the part of them that is staged.

How then do we represent war today? The theater of war is staged; an attempt to turn the battle into an icon through its own fiction. SG TRANSLATED BY THE NOMAD FISH
