Acerca de mí mismo —Rosa Olivares

La importancia de nuestras vidas, nuestras historias, nuestros dolores y alegrías, nuestros viajes, nuestra familia, nuestras relaciones sentimentales; la felicidad y el dolor, el amor y el desamor, lo transcendental y lo cotidiano. Todo esto es en esencia el tema de más del 80% de la fotografía que se realiza hoy en día. Si dejamos a un lado la fotografía documental (que viene a ser lo mismo pero de otros en lugar del yo gigantesco del artista), la profesional –publicidad, prensa, y poco más– y esa extraña rama de investigación formal que también existe en la foto actual, todo lo demás se reconduce al entorno del yo del fotógrafo.

Acerca de sí mismo, el fotógrafo nos habla de su familia, de sus hijos, del proceso de crecimiento y maduración de unos niños que acabamos conociendo como si fueran de nuestra familia. Los hemos visto bañándose desnudos, llorando con mocos y lágrimas, jugando, durmiendo; hemos visto sus escarceos de adolescencia y su despertar a una vida plena. Otros nos hablan de sus viajes. Un cuaderno de viaje detallado en el que no solamente aparece lo que el fotógrafo viajero va descubriendo, sino que sobre todo nos habla de él mismo, de cómo va y viene, de lo que mira, de lo que le llama la atención, de lo que le importa. La parte más amplia es la vida amorosa, los amigos, las novias, el amor y, sobre todo el desamor, el volver a empezar. Y de fondo de todo esto, el desnudo.

Los cuerpos desnudos del fotógrafo y de sus parejas, amigos, hijos y familiares. En todo este impudor hay que saber separar lo que se convierte en universal y lo que solamente es exhibicionismo, porque no sabemos exactamente cuál es la razón que hace creer al fotógrafo que nos interesa

su familia, sus viajes, sus amores, por qué nos tiene que interesar verle bañarse, pasear y fumar desnudo por su casa. La realidad es que, a priori, no nos interesa en absoluto. Su vida no nos parece más interesante que la nuestra, pero nosotros procuramos vivirla con más discreción.

Todos tenemos hijos y todos viajamos y todos nos hemos enamorado y desengañado posteriormente. Esa es la vida en su más absoluta vulgaridad.

Sin embargo, dentro de cada uno de nosotros existe un biógrafo de su propia vida. ¿Qué son sino todos esos álbumes de las vacaciones, de los nacimientos y bodas, de los cumpleaños, todas esas fotos que proclaman que estuvimos allí, que nos conocimos y nos amamos, que tuvimos hijos, que fuimos felices? También hubo muertes, y dolor y separaciones y finales que cerraban el ciclo de aquellos principios, y a veces la felicidad permanecía en nuestras casas hasta la vejez, y cada uno de nosotros seguimos contándolo en imágenes para siempre jamás.

Esa idea de álbum, de autobiografía en progreso es lo que también alientan las redes sociales, animándonos a contar qué sentimos, cómo estamos, qué pensamos, y nosotros, todos, mostramos una vez más a nuestros hijos, nuestras casas, nuestros amigos, nuestros perros, en unas instantáneas que viajan y viven con nosotros.

Pero nuestras vidas, aunque más cercanas, tal vez por esa misma proximidad, nos parecen menos interesantes, menos atractivas. Es en el arte, en el discurso de un artista, de aquel que sabe decir y ocultar, de esas imágenes que más que contarnos nos susurran, que nos sorprenden con el matiz, con un gesto salvaje, con un silencio terrible, en donde encontramos la vida, la intimidad de lo

ajeno, la curiosidad que nos desvela finalmente la maravilla de lo normal, lo inquietante de lo cotidiano. La vida real en su pura representación, la puesta en escena de lo que aparentemente es el fluir del día a día. En estas historias que vemos hay algo que nos atrapa. Puede ser su formalización visual, el ojo del artista sin duda construye algo más que una biografía parcial, y más allá de la anécdota de sus vidas hay algo que trasciende. Nan Goldin se ha construido un lugar en la historia de la fotografía actual haciendo algo que muchos otros artistas más desconocidos llevan haciendo desde siempre: contándonos su vida. Es cierto que Nan Goldin lo haría con claro desprecio de la calidad fotográfica, arrastrada por el desastre continuo de una vida a golpe de muerte, desapariciones y dolor. Pero su Ballad of Sexual Dependency nos ha marcado a todos ante la dureza y claridad de una historia que sentimos cercana, que creemos que podemos vivir. Sally Mann haría lo mismo pero desde el polo opuesto: la belleza, el respeto a una fotografía preciosista en blanco y negro, la libertad y felicidad de sus bellísimos hijos nos han impactado definitivamente.

Pero sus hijos crecieron y sus series posteriores nunca han alcanzado la fuerza de sus trabajos de familia, igual que los paisajes de Goldin o la vida de sus sobrinos nunca nos han interesado en absoluto.

Siempre hablamos de nosotros mismos, nuestra huella marca todo lo que hacemos, todo lo que tocamos, nuestro olor queda no solo en la piel de nuestros amantes sino en los lugares que habitamos. Nosotros, yo, siempre yo, siempre nosotros. Los artistas trazan fragmentos de su biografía en todo lo que hacen, en cada obra, en cada texto queda algo de quien la pensó, de quien la hizo. Es inevitable, pero convertir esta huella en la obra es ir mucho más lejos. El trabajo de Alberto García-Alix nos va mostrando fragmentos más o menos hilados de su vida. Su autorretrato permanece en el aire, tanto si sale él, como si solo es su mano con un condón, o su mano con unos zapatos, o su sombra, o alguna de las habitaciones por las que ha pasado, alguna de las mujeres que ha amado incluso en los paisajes su presencia es absoluta. Su trabajo solo habla de él mismo, de sus sentimientos, de sus amigos, de todo lo que a él le afecta, le toca. Igual que Nan Goldin, igual que la mayoría de los artistas que ocupan estas páginas. Su mirada y su percepción de un mundo que gira a su alrededor, que termina y empieza en el círculo que puede trazar con su brazo extendido, centra sus fotografías. Entre el diario, la autobiografía y un documentalismo personal que le hace fotografiarse las heridas antes de ir al hospital. Que hace que cada imagen sea una marca de su vida.

Esta creación de una historia y de un personaje lleva a la ficción a la misma velocidad que hacia la verdad. Porque el artista, como cada uno de nosotros, recrea a un personaje que no es realmente el propio artista. Igual que nuestra voz nos parece otra cuando la oímos grabada, igual que no nos reconocemos en las fotografías, tampoco estas historias son las verdaderas historias, son las versiones del biógrafo, cuentos sobre nosotros mismos, a veces pedazos sangrientos de nosotros mismos, otras felices fotos de un álbum intranscendente. Como narradores de nuestra propia historia nunca somos objetivos. ¿Cómo ser objetivo para hablar de nuestros sentimientos?

La historia de amor y de abandono de Sabine, contada por Jacob Aue Sobol seguramente sería diferente contada por la otra parte, Sabine. Pero solo tenemos una versión, solo existe una historia. Y la belleza y la fuerza de las fotografías, de las imágenes de una historia imposible pero real, es suficiente para que la ficción sea la única realidad. La fuerza de la imagen, la fuerza de una narración, la fuerza de un creador. Esta fuerza está presente en cada una de las historias que recogemos en este número que es especial porque especiales son las imágenes, las historias y los artistas que se han incluido. Solo son dieciséis historias y cinco fragmentos de otras cinco historias. Nuestro objetivo es comprobar cómo la idea de nosotros mismos está en la raíz de la fotografía actual. La necesidad de contarnos, de explicarnos, de vernos reflejados sigue alimentando la creación, sigue haciendo girar el mundo.

Aunque el amor siempre es el mismo, las formas de expresarlo, las formas de vivirlo son siempre diversas. De igual modo cada fotógrafo genera un vocabulario formal diferente para hablar de los mismos temas. Por esto la autobiografía es un subgénero inagotable que se renueva y enriquece con cada artista que nos habla de él mismo, con cada serie sobre las madres, las familias, las crisis de la cotidianeidad. Porque la vida finalmente se construye cada día, en cada momento y en cada imagen. Hay historias de amor, por supuesto, pero también otras diferentes como la de Corey Arnold y su personal relación con la pesca y el mar. Porque cada historia es diferente, unas más tiernas, otras más divertidas, otras de una belleza espectacular, pero todas tienen algo que las hacen diferentes. No hay nada nuevo, todas las historias son una sola historia y la diferencia es cómo se cuenta y cómo la recibimos cada uno de nosotros, protagonistas de nuestras propias vidas, de historias que tal vez nunca contemos y hasta lleguemos a olvidar, mientras todas estas historias ajenas, falsas y reales permanecerán en nuestra retina para siempre, formando parte de nuestra propia vida nunca contada.

The importance of our lives, our stories, our pains and joys, our travels, our families, our relationships; the happiness and the pain, the falling in and out of love, the transcendental and the everyday. All this is in essence the theme of more than 80% of the photography made these days. If we leave aside documentary photography (which is actually the same but about others rather than about the gigantic self of the artist), professional photography—advertising, photojournalism, and little else—and that strange branch of formal investigation that also exists in contemporary photography, everything else is redirected around the photographer’s self.

Concerning themselves, photographers introduce us to their family, their children, and the process of growth and maturing of children we end up getting to know as if they were our family. We have seen them bathing nude, crying with snot and tears, playing, sleeping; we have seen their adolescent flings and their awakening to full adulthood. Others bring us their travels through detailed travel journals that not only show us what the travelling photographers discover, but also, and above all, they tell us about them, about their comings and goings, what they look at, what attracts their attention, what matters…The bulk of it is about the love life, the friends, the girl-friends, the falling in love and, especially, the falling out of love, the starting over. As a backdrop for all of this, there is the nude, the nude bodies of the photographers and their mates, friends, children and family members. From among all this immodesty one must know how to separate what becomes universal and what is merely exhibitionism, because we do not

know exactly what leads photographers to believe we are interested in their families, their journeys, their loves, why we should be interested in seeing them bathe, take a walk, smoke naked around the house. The reality is that, in fact, we are not interested at all. We do not find their lives any more interesting than our own, though we strive to live ours more discreetly. We all have children and we all travel and we have all fallen in love and eventually become disenchanted. That is life in its most absolute vulgarity.

Nevertheless, within every one of us there is a biographer of our own lives. If not, what are all those photo albums from our holidays, births, birthdays and weddings, all those photos that declare we were there, that we met and we loved each other, that we had children, that we were happy. There were also deaths, and pain and separations and endings that closed the cycles of those beginnings, and sometimes happiness remained in our houses until old age, and each one of us continued telling about it in pictures forevermore. Social networks further encourage that idea of album, of autobiography in progress, inciting us to express what we feel, how we are, what we think, and we, all of us, once again show our children, our houses, our friends, our dogs, in snapshots we keep and live with. But our lives, although closer, perhaps precisely due to that proximity, seem to us less interesting, less attractive. It is in art, in the discourse of an artist, of someone who knows what to say and what to conceal, in those images that whisper rather than tell, which surprise us with a nuance, a wild gesture, or a terrible silence, where we find life, the intimacy of the re-

mote, the curiosity that ultimately reveals to us the wonder in the ordinary, the uncanny in the everyday. In art we find real life in its purest representation, the staging of what appears to be the day-to-day ebb and flow. In these stories we see something that traps us. It may be their visual formalization. The artist’s eye undoubtedly constructs something more than a partial biography, and beyond the anecdote of her life there is something that transcends. Nan Goldin has constructed a place in the history of contemporary photography by doing something that many other lesser known artists have always done: telling us about their lives. It is true that Nan Goldin would do this with outright disregard for the photographic quality, compelled by the continual disaster of a life plagued by death, disappearance and pain. But her Ballad of Sexual Dependency influenced us all by the harshness and clarity of a story we feel close to, one we believe we may live. Sally Mann would do the same thing, yet from the opposite end of the spectrum: beauty, respect for black and white préciosité photography. The freedom and happiness of her beautiful children impacted us definitively.

But her children grew up and her subsequent series have never been as forceful as her family portraits, much as Goldin’s landscapes and the lives of her nieces have never interested us in the least.

We always talk about ourselves, our trace is in everything we do, everything we touch; our smell does not only linger on our lover’s skin, but also in the places in which we live. We, I, always I, always we. Artists sketch fragments of their biography in everything they do. It is inevitable, yet converting that trace into a work of art is going much farther. Alberto GarcíaAlix’ work shows us more or less stitched-together fragments of his life. His self-portrait stays in the air, whether he is in it or not, or whether it is only his hand holding a condom, or his hand holding some shoes, or his shadow, or one of the rooms he has been in, or one of the women he has loved…even in the landscapes, his presence is absolute. His work only speaks of his self, of his feelings, his friends, everything that affects him, touches him. Just like Nan Goldin, just like most artists whose work is featured on these pages. Their gazes and their perceptions of a world that revolves around them, that ends and begins in the circle they can trace with outstretched arms; that is the focus of their photography. Their work is part diary, part autobiography and part personal documentary, which leads them to photograph their wounds before going to hospital, making every image a hallmark of their lives.

This creation of a story and a character leads to fiction as fast as it does to truth, because the artist, like every one of us, recreates a character who is not really the artist himself. Just as our voice seems like someone else’s when we hear it recorded, just as we do not recognize ourselves in photographs, these are not the true stories. They are the versions of the biographer, formal, aesthetic, literary compositions, tales about ourselves, sometimes bloody pieces of ourselves, other times happy photos from an insignificant album. As narrators of our own story we are never objective—indeed, it may be that no one can ever be objective. How can we be objective when dealing with our feelings? The love and abandonment story Sabine, told by Jacob Aue Sobol, would certainly be different if it were told by the other party, Sabine. But we only have one version; there is only one story. And the beauty and power of the photographs, of the pictures of an impossible yet real story, is enough for the fiction to be the only reality. This power is present in every one of the stories we have gathered in this issue, which is special because the pictures, stories and artists that have been included are special. There are only sixteen stories and five fragments of another five stories.

We don’t aim to exhaust the theme, but to convey how the idea of ourselves is at the root of contemporary photography. The need to tell people about us, to explain ourselves, to see ourselves reflected, continues to inform creation, and to make the world go round.

Although love is always the same, the ways of expressing it, the ways of experiencing it, are always diverse. Likewise, every photographer generates a different formal vocabulary to address the same themes. This is why the autobiography is an inexhaustible subgenre that is renewed and enriched by every artist who speaks to us about herself, with each series about mothers, families, and the crises of domesticity, because life is ultimately constructed every day, at every moment and in every image. There are love stories, of course, but there are also different stories, such as Corey Arnold’s personal relationship with fishing, the sea and fish. Because every story is different. Some are tenderer, others are funnier, others are of spectacular beauty, but they all have something that makes them different. There is nothing new. All stories are one story. The difference is how it is told and how each of us receives it, as protagonists of our own lives, of stories that we may never tell and we may even forget.

Meanwhile, all these true and false stories remain in our retina forever, forming part of our own untold life.

El Autor ha muerto En 1967, y no en 1968 como se empeñan algunos para que coincida con las revueltas estudiantiles de París, Roland Barthes publicó en una revista americana uno de los artículos más conocidos de la contemporaneidad, o, al menos, uno de los más citados por lo que de eslogan paródico de otra muerte divina, algo más antigua, tiene su título: “La muerte del Autor”. Fue en el número de Aspen, así se llamaba la revista, que estaba dedicado a uno de los poetas con los que se inició lo contemporáneo: Stéphane Mallarmé, el poeta del puro lenguaje.

Era un número doble, 5 y 6, al que pronto se le añadió un calificativo, el de minimalista. The Minismalist issue es como se conoce ahora, seguramente porque el anterior fue adjetivado como pop, siguiendo así esa lógica progresiva tan habitual, pero también por su insistencia en el lenguaje, aunque esta sería quizás más apropiada para un especial sobre el conceptualismo, y por los nombres de algunos de los artistas que colaboraban en él como Sol Lewitt, al que nunca le gustó esa etiqueta de mínimos, Robert Morris, que acabaría abandonando las grandes estructuras geométricas en gris neutro para trabajar con fieltro produciendo formas que resultarían demasiado orgánicas para un fundamentalista de esa corriente, y Dan Graham, que no siempre encaja en lo que la historia del arte ha dado en llamar minimalismo para fabricar, otra vez fabricar, un movimiento que unificase distintas tendencias de la escultura de los sesenta. En esos ejemplares minimalistas de Aspen podían leerse, en algunos casos, sería mejor decir, verse y escucharse, incluso construirse, textos y obras

de Samuel Beckett, Mel Bochner, William Burroughs, John Cage y Morton Feldman, Merce Cunningham, Marcel Duchamp, George Kubler, Max Neuhaus, Robert Rauschenberg, Hans Richter, Alain Robbe-Grillet, Tony Smith, o Susan Sontag. Muchos nombres propios, demasiados, para el índice de un número en el que se proclamaba que el autor estaba muerto. Un índice que ahora se ha convertido en una especie de canon, que es canónico, en el que todos han sido canonizados, puede que porque había que sacrificarse, ser un mártir, dejarse matar como el Autor del artículo de Barthes, para formar parte de él. Un mal que en aquella década parecía hacerse necesario: fallecer como autor para renacer como autoridad. Antes no resultaba del todo imprescindible asesinarse –aunque pueda pensarse que la ola de suicidios románticos, las enfermedades infecciosas finiseculares, las desapariciones vanguardistas y los accidentes de tráfico de postguerra, lo desmientan– para llegar a serlo. Esta podría ser la diferencia última entre Baudelaire y Mallarmé, la fractura que marca el paso de un lugar a otro, de la modernidad a la contemporaneidad: de la lectura del individuo en el texto a su anulación en la escritura.

Sin embargo, el texto barthesiano, que fue primero conferencia, tenía otra intención, muy distinta, y no era hablar de ese Autor que estaba muerto y que se había transformado en un fantasma porque muchos seguían invocándolo, sino plantear cómo ese hecho provocaba la aparición en escena de otro personaje, en su caso el lector, en el nuestro, el espectador, completando un Nan Goldin.

ciclo de muerte y nacimiento que resulta bastante tradicional, tanto como que este esquema biologicista de fin y principio o de principio y fin, porque el orden no altera el resultado con la repetición, ha sido el habitual del mayor de todos los relatos, la Historia, y con ella, la del Arte, que parece haber pasado por todas las edades una y otra vez: infancia, adolescencia, madurez, y vejez, como lo hacían los artistas en su vida y, también, en su obra. En algún momento, uno muy concreto, el de otro parto, la llegada del individuo y, como si fuesen hermanos siameses, la del genio, hacer historia del arte pasó de consistir en redactar una crónica a escribir una vida, una biografía, que como se sabe, siempre tiene el mismo desenlace fatal. El autor muerto no sólo suponía un nacimiento, sino también muchos otros finales y desprenderse de todo lo aprendido, de lo que ha sido enseñado, supone mucho esfuerzo, y algunos prefirieron permanecer en lugar seguro, a resguardo, y continuar explicándolo todo a partir del que lo había hecho, al escritor desde sus libros, al pintor desde sus cuadros, al fotógrafo desde sus imágenes,… porque si no se hacía así, cómo contar entonces y, aún más difícil, qué contar.

El Autor por sí mismo Este esfuerzo lo tuvo que realizar el propio Barthes cuando desde la editorial parisina Seuil le encargaron escribir su autobiografía unos años más tarde, en 1975, para la colección Escritores de siempre, esa en la que todos los títulos, casi, acababan en un “por él mismo”, aunque no hubiese sido ese “él mismo” el autor: Horacio, por él mismo; Shakespeare, por él mismo; Baudelaire, por él mismo; Apollinarie, por él mismo,... Una forma de titular que, en el caso especial de Barthes y ya en ediciones posteriores, abandonaría el “él mismo” para repetir su nombre, Roland Barthes por Roland Barthes, como si la proposición “por” que les separaba actuara igual que el cristal de un espejo sobre el que reflejarse, haciendo difícil distinguir entre el que es escrito y el que escribe. Un libro en el que Barthes toma varias decisiones importantes. La primera, romper con el esquema cronológico que determinaba el género desde el que se escribía, esa sucesión de décadas, lustros, años, meses, semanas y días que marcaba el modo de enfrentarse a la escritura de un diario, unas memorias o una autobiografía, y utilizar otro código para organizar los fragmentos, el orden alfabético, que recusaba, como él afirmaba, todo sentido por su arbitrariedad. La

segunda, al yo se le añadían el tú y el él: los pronombres de la primera, segunda y tercera persona del singular se intercambian a lo largo de todo el texto haciendo del sujeto algo incierto: ¿soy yo?, ¿eres tú?, ¿es él?

La tercera, incluir su propia escritura manuscrita antes incluso del sumario y a lo largo de todo el libro. Letras que actúan como una firma que certifica que lo dicho allí es verdad, que hacen pensar en el famoso contrato del autor con el lector en la autobiografía sobre el que Philippe Lejeune teorizó en El pacto autobiográfico, publicado –por una de esas casualidades que hacen historia– el mismo año y en la misma editorial, y que podrían leerse de otro modo si el que abriera el libro fuera un grafólogo especializado en el misterio del idioma de los trazos. Frases garabateadas y fragmentos de fichas de su archivo con sus anotaciones que evidencian que lo que se está leyendo ha sido escrito por un cuerpo, algo que resulta mucho más barthesiano. El mismo cuerpo, o el cuerpo que iba a llegar a ser, sus abuelos y sus padres están presentes en las primeras páginas, que aparece en las fotografías que decidió incluir y que también comenta, construyendo un relato que puede repasarse casi de forma paralela. Un cuerpo actuante, la mano que escribe como el instrumento desde y en el que actuarse, representarse sobre un nuevo escenario esta vez en blanco, el blanco de la página vacía, transformarse en personaje –si no se es siempre uno– de una obra de teatro, de un película de cine, o de una novela. Contradiciendo lo que de firma de un certificado notarial podría significar la escritura manual y rompiendo el pacto tácito que hace del género autobiográfico algo cierto, advierte al comienzo que Roland Barthes por sí mismo o Roland Barthes por Roland Barthes debe “considerarse como dicho por un personaje de novela”.

Viva el Actor En 1968, poco después de que el Autor muriera, Nan Goldin comenzó a tomar fotografías. Apenas tenía quince años. Lo hizo animada por uno de sus profesores en la escuela alternativa en la que se matriculó para escapar de casa. Un suceso se había convertido en su instante decisivo, el que influyó en su determinación de buscar refugio en otro lugar: el suicidio tres años antes de su hermana mayor Barbara Holly. Allí, en ese colegio especial, no sólo empezó a coger la cámara sino que conoció al que sería uno de sus amigos más importantes –o eso se cuenta–, otro fotógrafo con una historia de vida también compleja, David Armstrong, Nan Goldin.

aunque su instante decisivo no parezca ser tan concreto o no se haya concretado tanto como el de Goldin. Dos amigos que fueron primero compañeros de clase y de piso y que decidieron matricularse juntos en la Escuela del Museo de Bellas Artes de Boston, ella para estudiar fotografía y él, pintura, aunque pronto la abandonaría para concentrarse también en la fotografía.

Allí coincidieron con Philip-Lorca diCorcia y, más tarde, con otro artista que había entrado después y que era una de las figuras del underground punk de la capital de Nueva Inglaterra, Mark Morrisroe. A éste se había unido Jonathan Pierson, que luego se llamaría Jack, y que estudiaba en otra escuela de arte, el Massachussetts College of Art. Encuentros casuales y amigos comunes –también habría que contar con Gail Thacker y Tabboo!–, que se convertirían en historia por una broma. Un chiste sobre un círculo de pintores locales de comienzos del siglo pasado que se convirtió en el título de la exposición en el ICA de Boston en 1996 que les consagró como grupo, a pesar de que en los momentos determinantes, en esos otros instantes decisivos, algunos ni siquiera habían llegado a conocerse. Una burla que fue mal entendida y se convirtió en una nueva categoría en la historia de la fotografía y del arte, la de la Escuela de Boston, tan construida como el minimalismo del comienzo. Una escuela de la que se dice que es heredera de los trabajos de Diane Arbus y Larry Clark, de la que se afirma que se interesa en exhibir la intimidad haciendo público lo privado, de la que se ha escrito que se caracteriza por su interés en el sujeto fotografiado y en el registro de sus sentimientos y emociones, que ha sido vinculada al género autobiográfico, al relato en primera persona de unos lugares y unos tiempos concretos, el Boston de los setenta y el Nueva York de los ochenta; fotografías que se han incluido en lo documental o que hoy se han transformado en documentos de una época, imágenes que han sido calificadas en algún momento como verdaderas por su sinceridad…

Sin embargo, siempre se olvida que eran sujetos inciertos, como lo era Barthes cuando se escribía en primera, segunda y tercera persona del singular en su autobiografía, aunque quizás con los bostonianos habría que añadir las del plural: nosotros, vosotros y ellos. Unas

imágenes, las de Goldin y Armstrong, las de Morrisroe y Pierson que, al igual que las letras manuscritas de Barthes, desafiaban finalmente la convención del realismo del aquí y ahora que se había asociado a la fotografía desde su invención, ni siquiera los snapshots de Goldin –editados, elegidos, seleccionados para sus presentaciones públicas en forma de diaporamas acompañados de esa música que mueve y remueve– eran tan directos, todo está aprendido o se puede aprender, como afirma Barthes sobre el modo en el que cada uno narra (y se narra), ya que no sólo están los diccionarios que el escritor maneja sino que existen los museos que el artista visita –y casi todos ellos estudiaron en la escuela de uno de ellos– o los catálogos que consulta. Fotos que, como la escritura, tenían mucho de performativo, de mascarada, de disfraz; estaban buscándose a sí mismos, construyéndose como los mitos que hoy son; se inventaban un pasado, como Morrisroe al afirmar que era hijo del estrangulador de Boston; se cambiaban de nombre, como Pierson que abandonó el Jonathan de su juventud para adoptar el Jack en su madurez y que se autorretrataría en otros rostros, otros cuerpos, otros hombres décadas después, o imitaban las poses y las actitudes de otros anteriores, como sucede en algunos de los retratos en blanco y negro que Armstrong hace a sus amigos, y también a sus amigas, y que recuerdan a aquellos tan glamourosos de las estrellas de los cincuenta o de los aristócratas del Fin de siècle. Como evocaba Luc Santé en el catálogo de la retrospectiva de Goldin en el Whitney Museum en ese 1996 que supuso la consagración, en su doble sentido de reconocimiento y canonización, del grupo: buscaban un estilo que suponía unas “posibilidades completamente nuevas para la autoinvención” en “esos confusos días” en los que “la gente estaba intentando decidir sus nombres, el color de su pelo, su orientación sexual, su propósito en la tierra” y “se mostraba vestida para el drama”. “Te reto a que seas tú mismo”, era una de las frases favoritas de Goldin cuando alguien se ponía delante de su objetivo, y muchos aceptaron el desafío y fueron ellos mismos: actores, como todos.

If the author has died —Sergio Rubira

The Author is dead In 1967, rather than in 1968 as some insist so that it may coincide with the student protests in Paris, Roland Barthes published in an American magazine one of the most well-known articles in the contemporary age, or at least one of the most oft-quoted ones, for its title refers to a paradoxical catchphrase of another divine and somewhat older death, “The Death of the Author”. It was in the issue of Aspen—that was the name of the magazine—devoted to one of the poets with whom the contemporary era began: Stéphane Mallarmé, the poet of pure language. It was a double issue, no. 5 and no. 6, which was soon dubbed the minimalist issue. This name has stuck to this day, most likely because the previous issue was called the pop issue, following that so customary progressive reasoning, but also because of its insistence on language— although this may be more appropriate for a special issue on conceptualism—and because of the names of some of the contributing artists, such as Sol Lewitt, who never liked the minimal label, Robert Morris, who would eventually abandon the large geometric structures in neutral grey to work with felt, producing forms that turned out to be too organic for a fundamentalist of that trend, and Dan Graham, who does not always fit into what the history of art has come to call minimalism in order to fabricate, once again to fabricate, a movement that may unify different tendencies of the sculpture of the sixties. In those minimalist issues of Aspen one could read—in some cases it would be better to say write, see, listen to, or

even construct—essays and works by Samuel Beckett, Mel Bochner, William Burroughs, John Cage, Morton Feldman, Merce Cunningham, Marcel Duchamp, George Kubler, Max Neuhaus, Robert Rauschenberg, Hans Richter, Alain Robbe-Grillet, Tony Smith and Susan Sontag. Many proper names, too many for the table of contents of an issue announcing the death of the author. This table of contents is now a sort of canon. Everyone in it has been canonized; perhaps because one had to sacrifice oneself, to be a martyr, let oneself be killed, like the author of Barthes’ article, in order to be a part of it. It seems this became a necessary evil during that decade: to die as author in order to be reborn as authority. Previously, it had not been entirely essential to murder oneself in order to achieve this —although one might believe that the wave of romantic suicides, the turn-of-the-century infectious diseases, the avant-garde disappearances and the post-war traffic accidents, would contradict this. Maybe this is the ultimate difference between Baudelaire and Mallarmé, the fracture that marks the passage from one place to another, from modernity to the contemporary age: from the reading of the individual in the text to his elimination in the writing.

However, Barthes’ text, which was originally a conference, had another very different intention, and it was not so much to talk about that author who was dead and who had been transformed into a ghost because many people continued to invoke him, but to

consider how that fact was bringing onstage another character, in his case the reader, in ours the spectator, thus completing a cycle of death and birth that is rather traditional, so much so that this biological approach of end and beginning or beginning and end— because the order does not alter the result with the repetition— has been the habitual one in the greatest of all tales, History, and with it, Art, which seems to have passed through all the ages over and over again; childhood, adolescence, maturity, and old age, as did the artist in his life, and in his work. At some time, a very specific one, that of another birth, the arrival of the individual and, as if they were Siamese twins, that of the genius, the making of art history ceased to consist in writing a chronicle and began to consist in writing a life, a biography, which, as we know, always has the same fatal outcome. The dead author not only entailed a birth, but also many other ends. Getting rid of everything learned, what has been taught, requires a lot of effort, and some prefer to remain in a safe place, sheltered, and to continue explaining everything through the maker, the writer through his books, the painter through his paintings, the photographer through his pictures…because how else could things be discussed? And what is even more difficult, what else could be discussed?

The Author by the author Barthes had to make this effort himself when the Parisian publishing house Seuil commissioned him to write his autobiography a few years later, in 1975, for the collection Écrivains de toujours (classic writers), all of whose, or almost all of whose titles ended in “par lui-même” ([written] by himself), although that “himself” was not necessarily the actual author: Horace par lui-même; Shakespeare par lui-même; Baudelaire par lui-même; Apollinaire par lui-même …a form of titling for which, in the special case of Barthes and in subsequent editions, the “himself” was replaced by the repetition of the author’s name (Roland Barthes by Roland Barthes) as if the preposition “by” that separated author and subject operated like a mirror upon which to reflect himself, making it difficult to distinguish between what is written and the person writing. In this book Barthes made several important decisions. The first of these was to break with the chronological approach that had been defining the genre in which he was writing, that succes-

sion of decades, lustrums, years, months, weeks and days that had hitherto shaped the way to approach writing a diary, some memoires or an autobiography.

Instead he chose to use another code to organize the fragments, the alphabetical order, which, he claimed, eluded any order owing to its arbitrariness. Secondly, he added “you” to “I”: the first, second and third person singular pronouns were interchanged throughout the entire text, rendering the subject somewhat uncertain: Is it me? Is it you? Is it him? Thirdly, he included his own handwriting even before the table of contents and throughout the whole book. This writing functioned as a signature certifying that what is said there is true—which reminds us of the famous contract between the author and the reader in autobiography, about which Philippe Lejeune theorized in The Autobiographical Pact that was published that same year by the same publishing house, in one of those coincidences that makes history—and could be read differently if the person opening the book were a graphologist specialized in the mystery of the language of handwriting. Scribbled phrases and annotated fragments of files from his archive bear witness to the fact that what one is reading has been written by a body. The result is much more Barthesian. The same body—or the body that was going to become, for his grandparents and parents are present on the first pages—appears in the photographs that he decided to include and that also serve as commentary, constructing a tale that can essentially be surveyed in parallel. An acting body, the hand that writes like the instrument from and in which to play oneself, to represent oneself on a new stage, this time in white, the white of the empty page, to transform the self into the character—if the two are not always one and the same—of a theatre play, a film, or a novel. Contradicting what handwriting might entail as a notarized certificate and breaking the tacit pact that creates certainty with the autobiographical genre, it points out at the beginning that Roland Barthes by Himself or Roland Barthes by Roland Barthes must be “considered as told by a character from a novel”.

Long live the Actor In 1968, soon after the author died, Nan Goldin began to take photographs. She was barely fifteen years old. She was encouraged to do so by one of her teachers at the alternative school where she enrolled in order to escape from home. An event had became

a decisive instant, the one which influenced her determination to seek refuge elsewhere: her elder sister Barbara Holly’s suicide three years earlier. There, at that special school, not only did she take up photography, she met someone who would become one of her most important friends—or that is how she tells it—another photographer with a complicated life history, David Armstrong, although it seems that neither is his decisive instant as specific nor has it been specified as much as Goldin’s. First, these two friends were classmates and roommates who decided to enrol together in the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Goldin to study photography and David painting, although he would soon abandon painting in order to focus on photography, too. They coincided there with Philip-Lorca diCorcia and then with Mark Morrisroe, another artist who had started studying there later and who was one of the figures of New England ‘s capital of the underground punk movement. He got together with Jonathan Pierson, who would later call himself Jack, and who studied at another art school, the Massachusetts College of Art. Chance encounters and common friends—there was also Gail Thacker and Tabboo! —who would go down in history by virtue of a jest. A joke about a circle of local painters from the early 20th century after which the title of the 1996 exhibition at the ICA of Boston that established them as a group was named, despite the fact that at the determining moments, at those other decisive instants, some of them had not even met each other. This mockery was misunderstood and converted into another category in the history of photography and art, that of the Boston School, which was as constructed as the beginning of minimalism. This new school was said to be the heir of the works of Diane Arbus and Larry Clark, to be interested in exhibiting intimacy by placing the private realm in public view. People have written that this school is characteristically interested in photographed subjects and the records of their feelings and emotions, and it has been linked to the autobiographical genre, to the first person narrative about some specific places and times, Boston in the seventies and New York in the eighties. These photographs have been considered documentary in nature, and they have become documents of an era, images that have been regarded as truthful owing to their sincerity…

However, it is always overlooked that they were uncertain subjects, like Barthes when he was writ-

ing in first, second and third person singular in his autobiography, although perhaps with the Bostonians one would have to add the plurals: we, you and they.

These images, Goldin’s and Armstrong’s, Morrisroe’s and Pierson’s, like Barthes’ handwriting, ultimately challenged the convention of the realism of the here and now that had been associated with photography since its invention. Goldin’s snapshots—edited, chosen, selected for her public presentations as slide shows accompanied by that music that moves and stirs—were not even that direct, that straight. Everything is learned or can be learned, as Barthes says of the way in which every one of us narrates (and is narrated), since not only are there dictionaries for the writer to use, there are also museums for the artist to visit—and almost all of these artists studied at a museum school—or a catalogue for the artist to consult. These photos, like writing, had a considerable element of performance, of masquerade, of disguise; the artists were looking for themselves, constructing themselves as the myths they are today.

They were inventing a past, like Morrisroe when he declared he was the Boston strangler’s son. They were changing their names, like Pierson, who abandoned the Jonathan of his youth to adopt the Jack of his maturity and, decades later, portrayed himself in other faces, other bodies, and other men. Or they were imitating the poses and attitudes of their predecessors, as happens in some of the portraits in black and white that Armstrong made of his male friends, and also his female friends, and that are reminiscent of those glamorous images of the 1950s stars or the fin de siècle aristocrats. As Luc Santé evoked in the catalogue of Goldin’s retrospective at the Whitney Museum in that 1996 which entailed the consecration (in its double meaning as recognition and canonization) of the group: they were searching for a style that embodied some “completely new possibilities for self-intervention” in “those confusing days” in which “people were trying to decide on their names, their hair-colour, their sexual orientation, their purpose on earth” and “they showed up dressed for drama”. “I challenge you to be yourself”, was one of the Goldin’s favourite phrases when someone got in front of her lens. Many people met the challenge and were themselves: actors, like everyone.

En un encuentro inesperado. Es un nudo en el estómago por cada pequeña cosa. Es una canción que bailas a oscuras en tu cuarto. La felicidad o la desgracia de las primeras veces. La deliciosa inexperiencia que sólo puede estar abocada al más terrible de los dramas o al más encantador de los desenlaces. La verborrea delirante de la vida a tus pies. Las imágenes sencillas y desbordantes de Olivia Bee plasman la belleza singular de lo desconocido. Contienen esos primeros pasos, tanteos, fracasos y grandes victorias. Momentos perfectos captados en el instante justo. El esmalte craquelado en unos dedos que ejecutan una caricia, un corazón pintado para alguien en la pared, una despedida, un arco iris que se desvanece o unas luciérnagas atrapadas en el bosque. There is nothing more exciting than being fifteen years old. Trifles are electrifying. Every experience is a precipice into which you voluntarily fall headfirst. It is not a matter of having your whole life before you as is often said. It is everything that can happen to you. On a single summer afternoon. At a party for whose arrival you counted the days. During an unexpected encounter. It is a knot in your stomach for every little thing. It is a song you dance to in the dark in your room. The happiness or dejection about the first times. The delicious inexperience that can only lead to the most terrible dramas or the most wonderful outcomes. The delirious chatter of life at your feet. Olivia Bee’s simple and overwhelming images capture the singular beauty of the unknown. They contain those first steps, trials, failures and great victories. Perfect moments captured at the precise instant. The cracked polish on some fingers as they caress, a heart painted for someone on the wall, a farewell, a disappearing rainbow or some fireflies trapped in the forest. These are the little things that, portrayed from the overstated and impassioned viewpoint of adolescence, become visual poems. Colorful outof-focus tales told firsthand. Unlike the customary clichés, they afford new constructions of that emotional essence that, as they say, is lost over time, but that Olivia Bee traps in her images: unalterable memories of the everyday emotion involved in passing into adulthood.

¿Con quién se ha comido? ¿Quién lo ha cocinado? ¿Había invitados? ¿Se celebraba algo? ¿Se trataba del almuerzo o la cena de todos los días? ¿Quién se ha encargado de poner la mesa y de recogerla? ¿Quién ha comido qué? ¿De qué se habló? ¿Hubo sobremesa o todos se levantaron nada más acabar? ¿Quién ha fregado? Preguntas que podría parecer que son fútiles, que no tienen importancia, tan poca como tienen las fotografías de esos fregaderos en distintas cocinas –aunque una, la propia, aparece más que otras– en los que se acumulan en el escurridor, secándose, las ollas, las cacerolas, los utensilios, los platos, los vasos y los cubiertos que se han usado ese día. Un día concreto del año 2000 y un menú también, como nos indica el título de la imagen; o, como marca la serie completa, más de 170 días del año 2000 y unos cuantos menos primeros, segundos y postres porque se repiten –un nuevo interrogante: ¿se repiten por ser cómodos de preparar o porque son los favoritos?, y otro más, ¿por qué hay ausencias?, ¿son olvidos o las comidas se hicieron en un restaurante? Un año en la vida de Nigel Shafran a través de aquello a lo que nadie habría prestado atención, lo que de tan ordinario habría pasado desapercibido, lo que de tan cotidiano, demasiado quizás, se pasaría por alto. Bodegones contemporáneos que siguen una estrategia entre minimal y conceptualizante –la de la acumulación, la repetición, el listado y la catalogación– y que, como otros anteriores, cuentan mucho más de lo que en un primer vistazo se creería. Escenas de género que, aunque nieguen la posibilidad de la respuesta, provocan el relato, el de uno –auto– pero también el de todos –biografía–.

With whom was he eating? Who did the cooking? Were there any guests? Was he celebrating something? Was it the everyday lunch or dinner? Who set the table and who cleared it? Who ate what? What was talked about? Was there an after-dinner conversation or did everybody leave as soon as they finished? Who washed up? These questions may seem trifling, as unimportant as the photographs of sinks in different kitchens—although one, his own, appears more often than others—in which the pots, pans, utensils, plates, glasses and silverware used that day are piled up, drying in the dish rack. A particular day in the year 2000, and a particular meal as well, as the picture’s title indicates; or, as the complete series denotes, more than 170 days in the year 2000 and a lot fewer first and second courses and desserts, for they are repeated. A new question: Are they repeated because they are easy to prepare or because they are favourites? And another: why are there skipped meals? Were they forgotten or were the meals eaten at restaurants? This is a year in the life of Nigel Shafran through something to which no one would otherwise have paid any attention. Since it was so ordinary it would have gone unnoticed. Since it was such an everyday subject, perhaps too much so, it would have been overlooked. These contemporary still-lifes arise from a strategy that is both minimal and conceptualizing—that of accumulation, repetition, enumeration and cataloguing—and like others before them, they are much more telling than one might think at first glance. Although they bar the possibility of any answer, these genre scenes provoke the tale: one’s own—auto—but also everyone else’s—biography.

III VIDA EN EL CAMINO LIFE ON THE ROAD Alberto García-Alix www.albertogarciaalix.com Podría haber sido la literatura o el cine, tal vez la poesía, pero sin duda la fotografía reunía muchos de los elementos de todas ellas: la autonomía de la literatura, el uso de la imagen del cine, la intimidad de la poesía… la narratividad de todas ellas. Y en el centro, siempre, la vida, las experiencias de una vida en el camino. Toda la fotografía de García-Alix habla de él mismo. Finalmente sabiendo lo que se hace. Ese hombre que se retrata, herido después de una pelea y antes de ir al hospital, no está creando un documento, está escribiendo una página de su autobiografía. Pero todos hacemos eso de alguna manera. Es la ventaja de la autonomía, de la capacidad de hacer. Inevitablemente lo más importante para cada uno de nosotros somos nosotros mismos. El fotógrafo lo cuenta en imágenes, el escritor con palabras, todos hacemos lo que podemos… pero a algunos esto se les transforma en una temática permanente. En la obra de García-Alix vemos la evolución de sus amistades, de su vida, desfilan sus mujeres, asistimos a sus momentos bajos, sus decepciones, sus separaciones… y su figura, desnuda, vestida, presente o ausente, su voz en off en cada uno de los títulos de sus obras, sus manos, su sombra. Él, siempre y solamente él, está presente con su cuerpo y con sus obsesiones. Y nos muestra sus habitaciones: la primera de 1978, Mi habitación en Barcelona, iniciaría una serie de habitaciones vacías o con mujeres, ilustrando sus viajes a Italia, su camino a Estambul… y tantas otras cosas. El uso del blanco y negro dota a esta autobiografía interminable de un toque distante, que le aleja de la realidad y le adentra en la poesía, terreno tan querido como imposible para García-Alix, que solamente a través de sus fotografías, sin más palabras que unos títulos simbólicos o descriptivos, consigue interesarnos, no tanto por su biografía real como por la historia fragmentariamente contada, en blanco y negro, por la representación de su personaje en un héroe romántico y, finalmente, solitario como todo héroe que se precie.

It could have been literature or film, perhaps poetry, but undoubtedly photography integrated many elements of them all: the autonomy of literature, the use of the film image, the intimacy of poetry…the narrative quality of all. Always at the centre is life, the experiences of a life on the road. All García-Alix’ photography reflects him as a person. Ultimately, he knows what he is doing. That man, who is portrayed, wounded after a fight and before going to hospital, is not creating a document. He is writing a page of his own autobiography. In truth, we all do that to some extent. That is the advantage of autonomy, the capacity to act. Inevitably, we ourselves are what matter most to every one of us. The photographer tells this in pictures, the writer with words, every one of us does what we can…but for some they themselves become their own on-going subject. In García-Alix’ work we see the evolution of his friendships, his life, the succession of his women. We witness his lows, his disappointments, his break-ups…and his figure, naked, dressed, present or absent, his voice off-camera in every one of the titles of his works, his hands, his shadow. He and he alone is ever-present with his body and his obsessions. He shows us his rooms: the first in 1978, Mi habitación en Barcelona was the beginning of a series of rooms that were empty or with women, illustrating his journeys to Italy, his trip to Istanbul…and so many other things. The use of black and white lends this perpetual autobiography a touch of distance, which removes it from reality and brings it into poetry, a realm that is as loved as it is impossible for García-Alix, who only succeeds in interesting us through his photographs, without any words other than some symbolic or descriptive titles. And we are not as interested in his real biography as we are in the story told fragmentarily in black and white, the representation of a character, a romantic and ultimately solitary hero, like any hero worth his salt.

A pesar de su juventud la obra de Sobol pertenece a una ya larga tradición de fotógrafos que entienden la fotografía como el instrumento con el que construir su propia autobiografía. Todas sus series están vinculadas a su experiencia personal pero como causa y efecto, con él como protagonista central, todo contado en primera persona. De hecho, decide abandonar la fotografía para vivir como un pescador más de la aldea de Groelandia de su amiga, pero por ella, por su vínculo con ella, le surge de nuevo la necesidad de fotografiar, esta vez su entorno, sus relaciones, su propia vida; el extranjero en un territorio difícil, cegado por la nieve y el hielo, asombrado ante la locura del amor. Entre los años 1999 y 2002, Sobol realiza este trabajo que publicará como libro, Sabine, en 2004, capturando su experiencia, sus sentimientos y todo lo que sus ojos pudieron ver durante este tiempo. Su estilo también es un clásico en la tradición documental, siempre fotografía en blanco y negro, con un contraste violento y con pocas concesiones a los grises. Está contándonos sus experiencias más íntimas y para ello es suficientemente fuerte la imagen, no hace falta vocear ni gritar, simplemente nos habla de cerca, como en una conversación privada e íntima.

Sus fotografías, en las que nos muestra sin pudor el sexo, la enfermedad, la vejez o la muerte, son directas y sin concesiones, duras y frontales, novedosas en los enfoques y en su fragmentación.

Sobol muestra la dureza de los sentimientos a través de la dureza de la fotografía en blanco y negro. La impúdica mirada sobre uno mismo hecho espectáculo para todos, Sobol retoma la autobiografía como tema fotográfico y artístico, llevándola hasta sus límites.

Despite his youth Sobol’s work belongs to a long tradition of photographers who see photography as the instrument with which to construct their own autobiography. All his series are related to his personal experience as cause and effect, with him as the main character, and always told in first person. In fact, he decided to give up photography to live as just another fisherman in his girlfriend’s Greenlandic village, but because of her, because of his attachment to her, he eventually felt the need to take it up again. This time he photographed his environment, his relationships, his own life: the foreigner in a difficult territory, blinded by snow and ice, amazed by the foolishness of love. From 1999 to 2002 Sobol produced this work, which he was to publish in book form in 2004, with the title Sabine. It captures his experience, his feelings, and everything his eyes could see during that time. His style is also classical in the documentary tradition. He always shoots in black and white, with high contrast and making few concessions to the greys. He is telling us about his most intimate experiences and these images are forceful enough for that. It is not necessary to shout or scream. He simply speaks to us up close, as if in an intimate private conversation. His photographs, in which he unabashedly shows us sex, illness, old age and death, are direct and brazen. They are tough and head on, original in their focus and in their fragmentation. Sobol shows the harshness of feelings through the harshness of black and white photography. Through this shameless gaze upon himself turned spectacle for all, Sobol reconsiders the autobiography as photographic and artistic theme, taking it to the limit.

Un rastro fugaz de unas lágrimas en un pañuelo de papel arrugado y un cuerpo sin rostro que sostiene un mando a distancia, revelan un llanto repentino que, como toda acción, tiene una reacción: un abrazo improvisado. Dos estancias y una cortina. Dos cuerpos separados más que físicamente revelan una tempestad para la que pronto, o tarde, en el amor los segundos cuentan a un ritmo diferente, llegará una calma esperanzadora: una caricia en la bañera, un bol de cerezas compartido o, incluso, una mirada enrojecida. Un mal momento entre dos personas que comparten su vida, la fotógrafa Elinor Carucci y su esposo Eran, provocaron las instantáneas que componen la serie Crisis. Unas fotografías que se convirtieron en el catalizador que llevó a esta pareja a salir adelante: los gestos escenificados le permitían a él hablarle a ella con las palabras que fuera de estas imágenes no encontraba. Su generosidad, permitiendo ser fotografiado, le sirvió, a ella, para volver a conectar con él. La belleza del dolor, la tristeza compartida, la contemplación del esfuerzo diario y de la lucha interna, plasmada en la interacción externa, motivó una reconciliación que quizás, sin la fotografía, no hubiese tenido lugar.

Sentimientos y comportamientos, orquestados o no, que Carucci maneja con maestría en todos sus trabajos. Vivencias íntimas, perversamente subjetivas, que unen a sus protagonistas tanto como conectan con esos espectadores empáticos que, como Elinor y Eran, son los protagonistas de sus propias biografías.

The fleeting trace of some tears in a crumpled tissue and a faceless body holding a remote control device reveal a sudden cry that, like every action, has a reaction: an improvised hug. Two spaces and a curtain. Two bodies that are separated, and not just physically, reveal a storm after which, sooner or later­­—in love the seconds pass at a different rate­—a hopeful calm will come: a caress in the bathtub, a shared bowl of cherries, or even a flushed look. A bad time between two people who share their lives, the photographer Elinor Carucci and her husband Eran, evoked the pictures included in the series Crisis. The photographs became the catalyser that helped the couple get through it: the staged gestures enabled him to talk to her with the words he could not find outside of the pictures. His generosity, his letting her photograph him, helped her connect with him again.

The beauty of pain, the shared sadness, and the contemplation of daily effort and inner struggle portrayed in external interaction motivated a reconciliation that may not have taken place were it not for photography. Carucci handles these feelings and behaviours masterfully in all her works, whether they are orchestrated or not. These intimate and perversely subjective experiences unite the subjects while also touching empathetic viewers who, like Elinor and Eran, are the protagonists of their own biographies.

I. Se llamaba Christine y de soltera se apellidaba Göbler. Hoy está muerta. Decidió suicidarse después de pasar algunos años enferma.

Una depresión grave le llevó a quitarse la vida un mediodía del 7 de octubre de 1985 en el número 13 de la carretera de Falkenberg en Berlín Oriental. Todavía no había caído el Muro. II. Dicen que con el tiempo los rostros de los que han fallecido van borrándose, se desdibujan, sus contornos se confunden, dejan de tener nitidez, hasta que se olvidan. No hay nada más frustrante como querer recordar a alguien que se ha perdido, querer revivirle de algún modo por un momento, y no poder hacerlo. Un momento, uno solo, tan decisivo como fue ese mediodía del 7 de octubre de 1985 en la vida de Seiichi Furuya y también en sus fotos, tan decisivo como algunos afirman es el instante de la fotografía, pero ¿qué instante? El del fotógrafo cuando dispara la cámara o el del que mira la fotografía, el que nota la punzada, el punctum, el alfiler que se clava entre los ojos. III. Las fotografías son un aparato de la nostalgia, una máquina de fabricar recuerdos. No es ella, o no solo, porque las imágenes que vemos se hicieron en un tiempo concreto y ahora, por ese instante que fue tan decisivo, han adquirido otro significado muy diferente al de cuando se tomaron. Pretendían ser un retrato y son un autorretrato. Autorretratarse a partir del otro, utilizándolo como un espejo, porque el relato no es el suyo, el de Christine, sino el propio, el que Furuya muestra de su vida con ella y sin ella, ocultándose y desvelándose, y también es el relato que imaginan –y, al mismo tiempo, el que él piensa que imaginan– los que reciben la punzada y desean completar esos fragmentos que son los recuerdos y construir otros, queriendo sentir lo que creen que sintieron y sienten ellos. No es sólo ella.

I. Her name was Christine, and her maiden name was Göbler. She is dead now. She decided to commit suicide after years of illness. A deep depression led her to take her life at noon on October 7, 1985, at No. 13 Falkenberg road in East Berlin. The Wall had not fallen yet. II. They say that over time the faces of those who have died are erased, that they fade away, that their features blend together, becoming increasingly unclear, until they are entirely forgotten. There is nothing more frustrating than wanting to remember someone whom we have lost, to revive them somehow for a moment, and not being able to. One moment, just one, as decisive as that noon on October 7, 1985 in SeIIchi Furuya’s life, and in his photos, as decisive as some say the photographic instant is. But what instant? That of the photographer when he shoots the camera or that of the person looking at the photograph, who notices the puncture, the punctum, the pin poked between the eyes? III. Photographs are nostalgia devices, machines for manufacturing remembrances. It is not her in these photos, or not only her, because the pictures we see were made at a specific time and now, because of that instant that was so decisive, they have taken on another very different meaning from the one they had when they were taken. They were intended as a portrait, or a self-portrait, a portrayal of one’s self through the other, using her as a mirror. The story is not hers, Christine’s, but Furuya’s, the one he shows of his life with her and without her, concealing and revealing himself. It is also the story imagined–and, at the same time, that which he thinks is imagined–by those who receive the puncture and wish to complete those fragments that are the remembrances, and construct others, in an effort to feel what they believe they felt and feel. It is not only her.

Todo empieza hace dos años, en 2011, cuando Ignacio Navas descubre en una fotografía de su propio bautizo la existencia de una joven desconocida que le sostiene en sus brazos. ¿De quién se trata, cómo se llama? La búsqueda por saber quién es ella y la reconstrucción de su vida se convierten en una obsesión que se materializa en Yolanda. Una serie de fotografías domésticas extraídas de álbumes familiares se entremezclan con las imágenes producidas actualmente por el joven fotógrafo en aquellos lugares que se convirtieron en el escenario donde se desarrolló la vida de esta joven.

Una historia cargada de guiños generacionales, retazos de una vida truncada. Un relato cargado de una gran contención emocional, que no deja de ser, un paseo por una historia de amor. En realidad, un homenaje al tío del propio fotógrafo, Gabriel, pareja hasta la muerte de la joven Yolanda, y quien se convierte en el narrador de una historia esbozada a través del relato autobiográfico que nos aproxima a una época –aquellos finales de los ochenta y primeros noventas– y a una España en la que desaparecieron muchas yolandas. El modo de representar esta historia es de una sensibilidad fulminante que el propio fotógrafo explica así: “Cuando yo tenía seis años murió de SIDA mi tía Yolanda. No recuerdo nada de ella. A través de viejos álbumes familiares y conversaciones con mi tío intento conocerla dieciséis años después. Quiero contar su historia, la de su generación y su viaje a través de la vida y la enfermedad”. Un proyecto concebido como una labor de investigación en proceso donde el espectador irremediablemente acorta distancias con sus protagonistas y se infiltra en el entorno de esta joven, en este relato íntimo y biográfico de Ignacio Navas.

It all begins two years ago, in 2011, when Ignacio Navas discovers in a photograph of his own baptism the existence of an unknown young woman holding him in her arms. Who is it? What is her name? Seeking to find out who she is and reconstruct his life becomes an obsession that materializes as Yolanda. A series of snapshots taken from family albums are intermingled with recent pictures taken by the young photographer in the settings in which the life of this young woman unfolded. It is a story loaded with generational references, remnants of a life cut short, a tale imbued with considerable emotional restraint, which is also a perusal of a love story. Indeed, it is a tribute to the photographer’s own uncle, Gabriel, the partner of the young Yolanda up until her death. Gabriel becomes the narrator of a story articulated through the autobiographical tale that takes us back to an era—the late eighties and early nineties—and a Spain in which many Yolandas disappeared.

This story is represented with tremendous sensitivity, which the photographer explains like this: “When I was six years old my aunt Yolanda died of AIDS. I don’t remember anything about her. Through old family albums and conversations with my uncle I try to get to know her sixteen years later. I want to tell her story, that of her generation and her journey through life and disease.” This project was conceived as an investigative endeavour in progress wherein the viewer irremediably gets close to its protagonists, infiltrating the environment of this young woman, entering into this intimate story and biography of Ignacio Navas.

Mi tía Yolanda murió cuando yo era pequeño, no recuerdo nada de ella. A través de fotografías de álbumes de mi familia y conversaciones con mi tío he intentado conocerla 16 años después.

My aunt Yolanda died when I was little. I don’t remember anything about her. Through photographs from family albums and conversations with my uncle I’ve tried to get to know her sixteen years later.

“Su padre es de Málaga, su madre de Alfaro. Estudiaba para ser esteticién, su padre tiene una empresa de construcción. Le gustaban mucho los muñecos, era muy infantil, y la ropa de marca. No me acuerdo muy bien de sus inquietudes o lo que le gustaba, se apuntó a un curso de dibujo, hizo unos cuadros y eso, eso le gustaba. Hasta hace poco tenía yo un saco de esos muñecos, los guardaba, y al final los tiré que estaban ya descompuestos y hechos mierda”.

“Her father is from Malaga, her mother from Alfaro. She was studying to be a beautician. Her father has a construction company.

She liked dolls a lot, and designer clothing. She was very childlike.

I don’t really remember her interests or what she liked. She signed up for a drawing class; she made some paintings and she liked that.

Up until recently I had a bag of those dolls, I was keeping them, and I ended up throwing them away. They were falling apart and they were in really bad shape.”

“Empezó con las drogas con la mala gente de Tudela, luego sus padres la separaron de esa gente, la llevaron a Zaragoza a estudiar. Estuvo dos daños, lo dejó, se vino a Tudela y ya empezó a salir conmigo. Tendría 17 ó 18 años yo. Y ya pues nos enganchamos a la heroína. En aquellos años todos estaban enganchados. No había información, yo no sabía que enganchaba. No era una droga nueva, pero sí para nosotros”.

“She started taking drugs with a bad crowd from Tudela. Afterwards her parents separated her from those people. They took her to Saragossa to study. She was there for two years, she quit, she came back to Tudela and started going out with me. I was seventeen or eighteen years old. And then we got hooked on heroine.Back then everyone was hooked. There was no information. I didn’t know it was addicting. It wasn’t a new drug, but it was for us.”

“Se la llevaron sus padres a un centro y ahí descubrieron que tenía SIDA. Cuando vino del centro me lo dijo. Sus padres no la querían en casa, al principio se enfadaron mucho con ella y estuvo unos meses viviendo en casa de tu abuela, conmigo. Se escapó del centro, el psicólogo le decía a los padres que cuando se viera tirada volvería, sin saber que podía vivir conmigo. Pero luego ya con el tiempo estuvieron bien. Entonces nos desenganchamos, comenzó a haber metadona. Sus padres me quieren a mi tanto porque sabiendo que ella tenía SIDA y yo no, no la abandoné”.

“Her parents took her to a clinic and there they discovered she had AIDS. When she came back from the clinic she told me. Her parents didn’t want her at home. At first they were really mad at her and for a few months she lived at your grandmother’s house, with me. She escaped from the clinic. The psychologist told her parents that when she was down and out she would return, not knowing she could live with me. But then after a while they were okay. Then we kicked the habit. There started to be methadone. Her parents love me so much because I knew she had AIDS and I didn’t abandon her.”

“Ella volvió a engancharse. No quiso dejar la droga porque se sentía impotente”.

“She got hooked again. She didn’t want to give up drugs because she felt helpless.”

“Estar tanto juntos, depender tanto de una persona. Yo la llevaba a todos los lados, la llevaba con mis amigos, la llevaba a trapichear, todo. Y no llegas a odiarla ni mucho menos, pasa eso, que la convivencia era muy dura. Éramos unos críos. Luego ya compré yo el piso y lo arreglamos. Pero en el piso la putada que vivió poco, estuvo sólo meses en el piso nuevo. Y ya cayó mala".

“Being together so much, depending so much on one person. I took her everywhere. I took her with my friends, I took her to deal, everything. And you don’t ever hate her in the least, but the truth is living together was really hard. We were just kids. Then I bought the flat and we fixed it up. But in the flat the bummer is that she didn’t live in it long. She only lived in the flat for a few months. And then she got sick.”

Son los grandes actos los que normalmente se consideran trascendentes, pero en el recuerdo que mantiene el amor que se ha perdido, son los pequeños detalles los que perduran para siempre.

A veces son las cosas más insignificantes las que provocan mayor nostalgia. Las que evocan recuerdos profundamente anclados en el fondo de la memoria con mayor nitidez. Las trazas de un olor en un pañuelo, el tono irisado de un carmín sobre el dorso de la mano, una cuenta de cristal, una media desparejada, el tacto de las páginas amarillentas de un libro o la atmósfera viciada de un cajón cerrado durante demasiado tiempo. Restos, retazos, residuos, huellas.

Recorrer una vida a base de algunos de sus fragmentos más vulgares. Acotar, con las posesiones del pasado que una vez definieron, que definen en nuestros recuerdos, a quienes ya no están. Pruebas materiales, objetos que testimonian con el desgaste provocado por su uso, la existencia que no volverá. En el año 2000 la madre de Miyako Ishiuchi fallece repentinamente. The great acts are the ones that are normally considered transcendental, but in the memories we hold of our lost loved ones, it is the small details that last forever. Sometimes it is the most insignificant things that provoke the most nostalgia, vividly evoking remembrances rooted in the depths of memory. The traces of a smell in a handkerchief, the iridescent tone of lipstick on the back of one’s hand, a glass bead, an unpaired sock, the feel of the yellowing pages of a book or the stuffiness of a drawer that has been closed for too long. Remains, remnants, residues, and traces. A life can be surveyed through some of its most vulgar fragments. Those who are no longer with us can be contained in the possessions from the past that once defined them, and continue to define them in our memories. These fragments are material proof, objects whose wear and tear bears witness to an existence that will never return. In the year 2000 Miyako Ishiuchi’s mother died suddenly. For some time the photographer had been portraying details of her body. After her death she began to photograph her personal objects: her dentures, an old photograph, the hair left in her brush, and the heat of her body caught in the lace of her lingerie. She captured her loved-one’s soul in plastic, cloth and metal, freezing it forever in a photograph. Cataloguing outer items with images in order to cope with her inner pain, relating the infinity of an extinct life, seizing the last remnants of its existence.

El deseo de tener un hijo, un embarazo. Habitar un cuerpo ajeno, perfecto. Parir, los pechos llenos de leche, el delirio de los primeros meses, un espacio atemporal, sin forma, día y noche se suceden sin divisiones. El placer de ese pequeño cuerpo pegado al mío, a mi pecho, amamantar cada tres horas, dormitar, delirar, el agotamiento.

Un cuerpo que se alimenta de mí. Tantas emociones intensas, contradictorias, sorprendentes. Y en algún momento, un deslizamiento a otra escena, un movimiento imperceptible, radical. Insomnio, pensamientos circulares. De pronto me encuentro en un paraje que me aterra. Un tránsito lento y tortuoso por un túnel oscuro. Mi cuerpo me urge a entrar, a escuchar. Los recuerdos que se agolpan en el cuerpo. Me quedo quieta, escuchando la voz que habla en mi cabeza. Alerta. Replegada hacia adentro, ensimismada, suspendida entre dos tiempos. Miedo a moverme, cualquier movimiento puede provocar un derrumbe, dejar salir monstruos insospechados, aterradores. Mi miedo de niña. El miedo a lo de adentro. Los juegos, el cariño, el contacto, las fotos me devuelven al presente por un rato.

Sensaciones intensas, placenteras que lo dominan todo. Y a la vez, son mis niños los que me convocan a esa otra escena. Borré casi todos los recuerdos de mi infancia. Los que quedan están anclados a las fotos de mi abuela. Kinderwunsch, niños y deseo. El deseo de tener hijos. Recuperar el deseo de la niña de las fotos. La intensidad del afecto, la pasión, la depresión. El deseo como recorrido hacia adentro y hacia fuera a la vez. Un proceso vital.

The desire to become pregnant, with child. To be inhabited by an alien, perfect body. To give birth, breasts filled with milk. The delirium of those first few months, a timeless, formless space, day and night overlapping seamlessly. The pleasure of that small body stuck to mine, to my breast, nursing every three hours. Dozing off, delirium (already used how about - rapture, a hypnotic state? ), exhaustion. A body sustained by my own. So many intense, contradictory, startling emotions. And at some point, sliding into another scene, an imperceptible, radical transition. Insomnia, circular thinking.

Suddenly, I find myself in a place that terrifies me. A slow and tortuous passage through a dark tunnel. My body urges me to enter, to listen. Memories crowding into my body. Motionless, I listen to that voice inside my head. Alert. Withdrawn, pensive, suspended between two times. Paralyzed with fear: one false move might trigger collapse. Horrifying, unsuspected monsters could be released. My childhood fear. Fear of what lies within. Games, affection, contact, photographs return me to the present for a while. Intense, pleasant sensations that govern all. And yet, my children are the ones who summon me back to that other scene. I have erased nearly all my childhood memories. Those that remain are anchored in my grandmother’s photos. Kinderwunsch, children and desire. The desire to have children. Recovering that desire from the girl in those snapshots. The intensity of affection, passion, depression. Desire as an inward and outward journey. A vital process.

A finales de los años noventa, Gillian Laub finaliza sus estudios de Literatura Comparada. Algo la impulsa entonces a matricularse en el ICP de Nueva York para aprender fotografía. Quizá, varios años estudiando en la universidad los relatos escritos sobre otros, despertaron su inquietud por contar sus propias historias. Primero, las vivencias cercanas. Más tarde, historias ajenas filtradas en imágenes que las convierten en relatos personales. ¿Por qué no empezar con la familia? ¿Por qué no con la suya propia? Al fin y al cabo la familia es para muchos el origen de todo. No es sólo un grupo de personas con las que se pasa tiempo. La familia es un modelo y un referente, el territorio en el que todo sucede en los primeros años de vida y al que se acude en los últimos. Family es la historia visual de cuatro generaciones de una familia de clase media-alta norteamericana.

Un recorrido en el que inevitablemente aparecen y desaparecen los personajes, en el que los rostros y los cuerpos cambian inexorablemente ante el tiempo pero en el que se mantienen las costumbres, los encuentros que perpetúan el cariño y las pequeñas cosas que configuran la rutina. Un día en la playa, las disputas infantiles entre primos y hermanos, las cenas de acción de gracias, las bromas del abuelo a la abuela, la hora de la siesta o un espectáculo de ballet improvisado en el salón. In the late nineties, Gillian Laub graduated with a degree in Comparative Literature. She was compelled to enrol at the ICP in New York to learn photography. It may be that several years at the university studying stories written by others awoke in her a yearning to tell her own stories. At first she drew on personal experience. Later, she employed the stories of others and filtered them through images to make them her own. Why not start with the family? Why not with her own? After all, for many people the family is the origin of everything, not merely a group of people with whom to spend one’s time. The family is a model and a reference point, the place where everything happens in the first years of life, and to which one turns in the last ones. Family is a visual story about four generations of an upper-middle class family in the United States. It is a journey in which the characters inevitably appear and disappear, in which the faces and bodies inexorably change over time, but in which customs, the meetings that keep alive affections and the small things that shape routine are all perpetuated. A day at the beach, childish disputes among cousins and siblings, Thanksgiving dinners, grandpa’s jokes to grandma, an improvised ballet in the living room at naptime.The ordinary activities of a group that time turns into custom, memories and anecdotes that enliven a meal or precede a toast that is repeated year after year at Christmastime. A personal story, a universal common background.

Es sobre todo ligereza lo que se desprende de estas fotografías en blanco y negro. También es arrollador el placer de ser un niño en los indisciplinados años setenta y ochenta, como un sentimiento de seguridad, de calidez en la relación entre padres e hijos. ¿Podría conseguir esto mismo un fotógrafo en el 2013? ¿Podría fotografiar a sus hijos con sus trajes de cumpleaños, descalzos y despreocupados, en un paraje idílico, actuando como chicos duros –con cigarrillos falsos y botellas de cerveza? ¿O acaso esta espontaneidad, esta inocencia se ha perdido definitivamente ante una serie de actitudes rancias y un moralismo estrecho? Fue el hijo de Bertien van Manen quien, hace poco le recordó a la fotógrafa la existencia de estas imágenes. No puedo imaginar un reconocimiento ni un honor más hermoso. Es sorprendente ver cómo todas las cualidades de su obra de madurez ya están presentes de alguna manera en estas instantáneas familiares. Se reconoce el lirismo de la laxitud, la sensualidad y la melancolía, pero también el interés por el balance y la composición. It is mainly lightness that we see in these black and white photographs. Overwhelmingly dominant is the pleasure of being a child in the undisciplined seventies and eighties as is a feeling of security, the warmth of the relationship between parent and child. Could a photographer still do this in 2013? Could she photograph her children in their birthdays suits, footloose and carefree, in idyllic surroundings, acting the tough guy – and girl- with fake cigarettes and beer bottles? Or are this spontaneity, this innocence, definitely lost thanks to rancid affairs and small-minded moralism? It was her own son, who recently reminded Bertien van Manen of these images. A more beautiful acknowledgment and mark of honor is hardly imaginable. It is surprising to see how all the qualities of her riper work are already somehow present in these family-snapshots. One recognizes the lyrical looseness, the sensuality and the melancholy but also a striving for balance and composition.

Her photographs look like free, insouciant improvisations on themes, that later, in A Hundred Summers a Hundred Winters or in East Wind West Wind have taken shape in a more outspoken way. Thanks to their graphic imperfections especially the contact prints have the seductive aura of authenticity but much more interesting are Van Manen’s efforts to create convincing pictures, however spontaneous and intimate the scenes may be. This is most clearly visible in her attention for the pose. In one or two cases the pose is purposefully staged but more often it is very acutely observed and captured in all its artless liveliness and almost painful beauty.

Mi nombre es Chris Shaw y trabajé durante diez años en hoteles de Londres por las noches. Me llamaban Elvis en el pasado pero no soy Elvis. La verdad es que me parezco más a Charlie Sheen. En el verano de 1993 salí un día a comprar un cartón de leche pero al final me fui al pub Coach and Horses en el Soho de Londres. Esa noche conocí a una mujer –que no era la mujer con la que vivía– y cuando volví a mi “casa” dos semanas más tarde había cambiado la cerradura. Las cosas pintaban mal. My name is Chris Shaw and I worked for ten years in London hotels at night. It´s true I have been called Elvis in my past but I am not Elvis. The truth is I look a lot like Charlie Sheen. In the summer of 1993 I went out to buy a pint of milk but instead went to the coach and horses pub in Soho London. That night I met a woman. She was not the woman I lived withwhen I returned to my “home” two weeks later the locks had been changed. Things looked bleak I was unemployed and homeless in London went to a Job centre and saw a job adveritised for a night porter, I was hoping they might have staff accomodation. I applied for the job. To my surprize I was successful.

This was my first hotel the Bonnington in Bloomsbury.

After a year working nights and staying in a staff Room I managed to move into a squalid, damp ex squat housing Association apartment. I freelanced as a photographer and pretended the night job was just a temporary measure a means to an end. Slowly it took over my life the inverse clock and the abnormal lifestyle started to seem normal. I lost my middle class art school friends and any career as a photographer I began to inhabit a nocturnal world. There are armys of drunken naked men who lock themselves naked outside of their hotel rooms-they make their way to a hotel lobby were someone like me wearing a uniform and standing in front of a rack of keys. Has to take a master key and let them into their rooms again and again–did I say I hate this?

One night I spent two hours going through a long list on a spreadsheet as a drunken naked man stood in front of me wrapped in a plastic shower curtain he had stolen. It took two hours because he had checked in under a false name and forgotten it… who are you really?

After three years at the Bonnington I was fired for refusing to work my third Xmas in a row. I was sacked twice in the next six months first a hotel in Leicester Square for fighting in the hotel lobby with an off duty chef, and next from the milestone in south Kensington when a duty manager discovered me asleep-night porters are supposed to be awake!

It was about this time that I seriously started taking photos with the instamatic camera I carried in my uniform pocket. I lost the art school artifice of taking photos and just photographed anything in front of me the idea being stay awake and avoid being sacked! The photographs became art- a wonderful record of the social fantastic at 3am. It was all there-piss, vomit, excre-

fantástica vida social a las 3 de la mañana. Todo consistía en pis, vómito, excrementos, sangre, tapones de oído, goma espuma y almohadas de plumas. Unos policías que investigaban el apuñalamiento de un vagabundo borracho por unos adolescentes fuera del Howard me interrogaron –no estaban interesados en el asesinato– lo que querían saber era… ¿Vienen muchas prostitutas a este hotel? ¿Llamaba yo a prostitutas? Mi amigo Paul llevaba un sex shop en el Soho, solíamos tomarnos unas Guiness y jugar al billar toda la noche en un club y él se parecía a Telly Savalas –Kojac y Charlie Sheen– siempre preguntaba si Charlotte Rampling había venido la noche pasada. Yo siempre respondía cuántas veces tenía que decirle que ni niños ni animales hoy. Si lo decía cinco veces me hacía sentir que no tenía el peor trabajo del mundo. Me centré en 2000 cuando empecé a trabajar en el Langham Hilton, era el hotel más grande en el que había trabajado y era muy estricto con la seguridad. ment, blood, humour, ear plugs and foam and feather pillows I was questioned by detectives investigating the stabbing of a homeless drunk outside the Howard by teenagers -they were not interested in the murder-what they wanted to know was... Do you get a lot of whores in this hotel? Did I call whores to the hotel? My friend porno Paul was manager of a sex shop in Soho we used to drink pints of Guinness and play snooker all night in a club under centre point on Tottenhan Court road he looked like Telly Savalas -it was Kojak and Charlie Sheenhe would always ask did Charlotte Rampling come in last night? I would always ask how many times had he had to say no children no animals today? If he said five times it made me feel that I didn´t have the worst job in the world. I sobered up in the year 2000 when I started working at the Langham Hilton near the BBC that was the biggest hotel I worked in and it was seriously busy and strict with security if I wanted to sit down I had to go to the canteen I was on a bleeper attached to a very temperamental fire alarm system which used to go off and went into full evacuation mode with fire engines and firemen soon appearing.

I found to my astonishment I had accumulated a bin bag of undeveloped films I started developing these films and making a portfolio. My printing and developing techniques were influenced by being tired I made mistakes. In the darkroom I overdeveloped I scratched negatives a style started by accident I turning into an aesthetique underneath the image I would write in black marker pen acerbic, sardonic, poetic, comments.

I went to a portfolio review at Arles festival. They gave me a small grant to further my project. It was at that point in 2003 I left the Langham to do photography full time, some night porter photographs which I had entered into a fashion photography competition for a newspaper won first prize and ten thousand pounds.

The money helped I had exhibitions. I travelled to the United States and found a publisher called Jack Woody (Twin Palms) who in 2006 produced a photo book called Life as a Night Porter.

Now I live in Paris and its been a few years since I worked as a night porter. Life as a night porter is really a hotel constructed in my imagination. It depends on how you look at things, in my experience heaven and hell are places here on earth and just like two hotels facing each other you have a choice–you can stay in either one. C.S.

Las habitaciones de hotel siempre me han fascinado. No importa si son de un motel sórdido junto a la carretera o de un palacio de cinco estrellas en una playa idílica. Siempre noto un sentido de anticipación y escapada cuando estoy a punto de abrir una nueva puerta. ¿Qué sorpresas aguardan? ¿Cómo será la habitación? Y ¿las vistas? Cada habitación se fotografió siguiendo el mismo procedimiento dentro de las posibilidades, manteniendo la misma luz y el mismo encuadre para que las características propias de cada espacio quedaran presentadas por igual. Idílicamente trato de fotografiar cada cuarto según entro, captando la distribución, los muebles y efectos según los veo por primera vez. Las fotografías de las vistas se hicieron con las mismas lentes, situándolas directamente en la superficie del cristal en mitad de la ventana. Dado que mis estancias eran a menudo muy limitadas, en lo que a duración se refiere, no podía permitirme el lujo de esperar a la hora óptima del día o a tener la mejor luz. Esto implicaba que no podía controlar la mirada de esas fotografías del mismo modo en que podía hacerlo con el interior, lo que le dio cierta aleatoriedad al díptico resultante. Elegí mostrar las habitaciones no por orden cronológico ni de fecha, sino según el orden de los números de la habitación. El resultado es una interesante interacción entre aleatoriedad y orden; la aleatoriedad de cada localización, la repetición desordenada y el modo en que los interiores se relacionan con sus correspondientes vistas. Tengo recuerdos de cada estancia, no importa cómo de tenues o transitorios sean, hay una historia detrás de cada habitación y cada vista: ¿Por qué estaba allí? ¿Regresaré alguna vez? ¿Querría hacerlo?

Hotel rooms have always fascinated me. It doesn't matter whether its a seedy motel by the side of a highway or a 5-star palace on an idyllic beach. I always feel a sense of anticipation and escapism every time I am about to unlock a new door. What surprises await? What will the room be like? And what of the view...? Each room was photographed using the same process in as much as was allowed, keeping the lighting and framing consistent in order to allow the individual personalities of the spaces to present themselves equally. Ideally I try to photograph each room immediately upon entry, capturing the layout, furniture and effects as I first see them. The view shots are taken with the same lens, which I place directly on the surface of the glass in the middle of the window. Because my stays were often very limited in their duration I did not have the luxury for waiting for the optimum time of day or light. This meant I could not control the look of these photographs the way I could the interiors and introduced a randomness to the resulting dyptich. I chose to show the rooms not in chronological order of date but in order of room number. The result is an interesting interaction between randomness and order; the randomness of each location, the orderliness of repetition and how each interior relates to its corresponding view. There are memories of each stay, no matter how faint or transitory, a story behind each room and view. Why was I there? Would I ever return? Would I want to?

La fotografía es una herramienta de construcción de la identidad, individual y colectiva, una forma de recuperar no sólo nuestra propia memoria, sino la memoria de los otros. John Berger dice que la fotografía nos hace recordar todo aquello que hemos olvidado.

El trabajo de Daniel Blaufuks parece intentar esa recuperación, siempre parcial, de una memoria inabarcable. Tanto es así que toda su obra, iniciada en la década de los noventa, se elabora aparentemente sin una forma concreta: muchas de sus series duran años, y otras, apenas unos meses. En ocasiones consisten en una ardua investigación a través de documentos encontrados y fotografiados, cuyo final resulta ser un vídeo o un film; en otras, no se puede hablar estrictamente de fotografía porque se trata de una recopilación de objetos, de imágenes, de postales, de restos de una vida…; mientras que otras veces nos situamos ante unas bellísimas imágenes que nos evocan historias imaginadas.

Photography is a tool for constructing individual and collective identity, a way of recovering not only our own memory, but the memory of others. John Berger says that photography reminds us of everything we have forgotten. Daniel Blaufuks’ work seems to be an attempt at that ever-partial recovery of an unfathomable memory. This is so much the case that his body of work, begun in the 1990s, is apparently produced without adhering to any specific form: many of his series last for years, and others barely a few months. They sometimes consist in arduous investigations through found and photographed documents, eventually ending in videos or films; in other cases, his work cannot strictly speaking be considered photography because it involves a compilation of objects, images, postcards, the remains of a life; whereas in other cases we find ourselves before beautiful pictures that evoke imagined stories.

Fish-Work es el título de un proyecto en curso que documenta mis viajes como pescador comercial en Alaska y al extranjero para explorar las culturas pesqueras de todo el mundo. Desde 1995 he trabajado, según la estación, como pescador de cangrejo, salmón, bacalao y mero en Alaska. Pero no fue hasta 2002 que me decidí a coger una cámara y a dedicarme seriamente a captar la historia de este mundo único con el que me había topado. Tengo una relación de amor-odio con la pesca comercial. El trabajo a menudo es agotador y mundano, a veces peligroso y terriblemente repetitivo.

Pero, por contra, hay belleza y libertad en el trabajo manual, rodeado de un vasto y remoto mar desierto. Para un pescador la recompensa a menudo se halla en las historias increíbles de triunfo, fracaso y orgullo que se llevan a casa, al mundo civilizado. He elegido contar mi historia con la fotografía. Esta selección la he realizado a partir de mi viaje más reciente, tres meses viviendo entre pescadores europeos en España, Francia, los Países Bajos, Escocia, Grecia, Alemania, Polonia, Noruega e Irlanda. Las he acompañado de mis imágenes resultado de siete años trabajando en el mar de Berin a bordo de un barco cangrejero llamado Rollo, y de mi serie posterior Graveyard Point, el nombre de la comunidad estacional pesquera de salmón de la que soy parte en Bristol Bay, Alaska.

Fish-Work is the title of an ongoing life project documenting my journey as a commercial fisherman in Alaska and my travels abroad exploring fishing cultures around the world. Since 1995, I’ve worked seasonally as a crab, salmon, cod, and halibut fisherman in Alaska. But it wasn’t until 2002 that I picked up a camera and got serious about telling the story of this unique little world I’d stumbled upon. I have a love-hate relationship with commercial fishing. The work is often grueling and mundane, sometimes dangerous and soul crushingly repetitive. But inversely, there is beauty and freedom in the act of manual labor, surrounded by a vast and remote sea wilderness. For a fisherman, the reward is often found in the amazing stories of triumph, disaster, and pride that are brought home to the civilized world. I’ve chosen to tell my story in photographs. This selection has been culled from my most recent three month journey living amongst European fisherman in Spain, France, the Netherlands, Scotland, Greece, Germany, Poland, Norway and Ireland. They are accompanied by my images from seven years of work aboard the Bering Sea crab boat Rollo and my upcoming series Graveyard Point, the name of the seasonal salmon fishing community I’m a part of in Bristol Bay, Alaska.
