Exeter School Academic Achievements 2019
Head Boy Ben Harvey joined Exeter School aged 10 from North Tawton Community Primary School. A talented sportsman, he represented the school in the 1st XI cricket and football teams. Ben completed the 35-mile Ten Tors challenge in the Middle Fifth. As part of his Gold Duke of Edinburgh award, he took part in a kayaking trip around the Hebrides in the summer of his Lower Sixth year. In the Upper Sixth, Ben enjoyed singing in the annual Choral Society concert and gained a Silver Award in the British Physics Olympiad. He achieved four A*s, securing his offer to read Natural Sciences at Durham University in September 2020.
Maddy King from Exeter joined Exeter School aged 16 from St Peter’s High School. She immediately threw herself into Sixth Form life, in particular starring in two Senior School productions – Julius Caesar and Tristan and Yseult. She also achieved distinction in her Gold LAMDA exam and continues to pursue her interest in acting. Whilst being part of The Exonian team, Maddy enjoyed her time writing for the school publication. A keen hockey player, Maddy also represented the school in the 1st XI team. Maddy attained three A*s and goes on to study English at UCL.
House Captain Bethan Reynolds from Exeter joined Exeter School aged 12 from Teign School. She enjoyed taking part in the Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award during the Sixth Form, kayaking around the Isle of Skye as part of her qualifying expedition. She also took part in the 35-mile Ten Tors competition and has loved working her way up the ranks in the Navy section in CCF to become a Petty Officer. During the Lower Sixth, Bethan was a member of the Young Enterprise group MiniM, whose handmade coasters saw regional success in the competition. After qualifying as a lifesaver in Upper Fifth, Bethan went on to become a lifeguard, working in the school pool. As a charity ambassador, Bethan has enjoyed two summers of voluntary work in hospitals in Malawi, and in her Upper Sixth year, she helped the school to raise £1,262.31 for CURE hospital. A keen science ambassador and member of the school’s Medical Society, Bethan’s A* and two A grades have secured her place to read Medicine at Cardiff University in 2020.
House Captain Demelza May from Brampford Speke joined Exeter School aged 13 from Exeter Cathedral School. Sporty Demelza achieved senior hockey colours and represented the school in the 1st XI hockey team, played county and regional level as well as for Isca Hockey Club, taking the club team to the national finals three times. Demelza was also a Sports Leader, where she loved coaching and extending her knowledge in a range of sports. Demelza enjoyed drama at Exeter School taking leading roles in Senior School productions including Julius Caesar and Tristan and Yseult. Demelza also volunteered as a Wellbeing Ambassador and trained to be a mentor for younger pupils. She was runner up in the Copper Association national competition and also took part in Young Enterprise. She scored two As and one B and is now on a gap year completing her BASI ski instructor qualification after which she intends to study Psychology at university.
Sam Corney from Exmouth joined Exeter School aged 16 from St Peter’s High School. Captain of the first XI cricket team, Sam also represented the school in both the hockey and football 1st XIs and contributed to Exeter School winning the Devon Schools Golf Championship in 2018. As a Sports Leader, Sam taught the younger years rugby and cricket throughout his time at the school. A keen clarinettist, Sam achieved grade 7 and regularly performed in school concerts as part of the jazz band. Sam achieved two As and a B, enabling him to study Mechanical Engineering at Nottingham University.
André Orchard from Huxham joined Exeter School aged 13 from St Peter’s Preparatory School, Lympstone. Swimming captain André managed to lead Exeter School to one of their best swimming seasons yet, whilst still achieving regional finals with Exeter City Swimming Club. He achieved grade six in piano and continues to play. André enjoyed the Sciences at Exeter School and scored a Bronze Award in the British Physics Olympiad. André achieved two A*s and one A grade and goes on to study Physics with Theoretical Physics at Manchester University.

Jamie Stephenson from Colebrooke near Crediton joined Exeter School aged 11 from Copplestone Primary School. Musical Jamie played trumpet with Swunk and Jazz Band 1 in school concerts. Whilst at school he enjoyed completing his Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award, kayaking and camping around the Scottish highlands as part of his final expedition. He also played hockey for the 1st XI. His four A* grades guarantee his place to read Maths, at Jesus College, Cambridge.
GCSE
Head Girl Beth Pittman from Morchard Bishop joined Exeter School aged 10 from Sandford School. A keen singer, Beth was a soloist in the school’s Choral Society concert, held at Exeter Cathedral, and achieved a distinction in her grade 8 exam. Beth has enjoyed performing in drama productions throughout her time at school, in particular the musical Guys and Dolls. She captained the 1st XI girls’ hockey team, enjoying the sports tour to Argentina in 2018. Beth scored two A* and one A grades and plans on having a gap year before studying Economics at Durham University.
