Welcome 2014 is going to be quite a year for us at the Exeter Northcott Theatre. As well as the wide range of top notch performances you have come to expect this season is really about getting involved yourself as we challenge you to ENGAGE – Take Centre Stage! Shake a leg and get moving this spring! Whatever your age, if you enjoy dancing then there are lots of ways to strut your stuff with us. You can join the Sugar Dandies for a tea dance or bust some moves along with b.Supreme, there’s even a chance to sing and dance along with Grease as well as Who’s Dancing? an innovative project for creative young people in the Easter holidays (see page 49). Fancy treading the boards or getting involved behind the scenes? In May and June we will be working with Common Players to create and tour Jez Butterworth’s West End smash-hit Jerusalem. This 21st century morality tale is set on the edge of a west country village on Midsummers’ Eve – find out how you can join in our very own midsummer madness on page 34. As you can tell we’ve well and truly got football fever and, in the year of the World Cup, we will be celebrating Exeter City Football Club’s claim to world football fame. We are thrilled to be staging a large-scale community musical to mark the occasion; find out about our partners and how you can get involved on page 42. And if you’re looking for a stocking filler... Sound&Fury use their innovative theatre vocabulary of immersive surround sound design, total darkness and imaginative lighting in Going Dark to reawaken our wonder at the cosmos and reveals how one man’s vision becomes illuminated by darkness. Iolanthe focuses on Strephon, a half mortal and half immortal shepherd. Strephon hides this mysterious secret from his love, Phyllis, who is adored not only by Strephon but by the entirety of the House of Lords including the Lord Chancellor himself. When Phyllis catches Strephon with his mother, Iolanthe, who on account of being immortal looks the same age as Strephon, chaos and confusion ensues. For three weeks Invisible Flock will occupy a disused shop in Exeter and transform it into a giant 3D map of the city. From 10am to 6pm every day you are invited to explore the map, discover what makes others happy and where, and in turn submit your own happy memory or moment to add to the ever-growing database of the country’s happiness. The Day we Played Brazil will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the football match between Exeter City and the Brazil national team - the first-ever game played by Brazil. Based on the extraordinary true story of Exeter City FC’s tour to South America in 1914 this musical play will be performed by 120 local people telling the stories of the players and their wives, sweethearts and families back home. There will be plenty of music, tears and laughter along the way as well as some great footballing moments. It’s a story of adventure and excitement both on and off the pitch that will take the audience through the highs and lows of the hundred years in Exeter since the outbreak of the Great War. GET INVOLVED! We will be looking for 120 performers to make this spectacular show in February 2014, to register your interest please e-mail brazil@exeternorthcott.co.uk. 6 January – 22 February
Exeter Northcott Theatre’s annual New Year group show, featuring painting, photography and printmaking from invited local artists. Julie Ruth Bramley is returning this year to the Fourth Wall exhibition with some new additions to her Nebula Collection. She continues to use crystal mineral powder paint, which she mixes with linseed oil to produce the vibrant colours in her work. Laurence Cisneros Foster’s photography focuses on surfaces, textures and colours, responding to the beauty he sees around the world. Hazel Johnson works with handmade paint and fabric, creating work which is primarily concerned with people and the figurative form. Ali Pawson’s work is inspired by narratives and feminine mythology and she enjoys exploring connections between landscape, history and folklore. She is currently using monoprint, screenprint and photo-etching techniques. Vicky Thrower is a local artist whose inspirations come from the smallest fold of fabric to the rich history of feudal Japan.

Brian Denington is a figurative painter recently returned to England after 20 years living in Ireland and France. He has exhibited in Dublin, Belfast, Paris, Honfleur and London. A favourite theme of artists and musicians either in performance or at rest is much in evidence here, as are new larger paintings on a theatrical theme. This is his first exhibition in Devon.

Northtots A FREE storytelling extravaganza read by local and visiting artists. Northtots is a perfect way for parents to enjoy a coffee whilst their under 5s are swept away in literacy play. This group will meet once a week in Spires Cafe. Thursdays 11am11.30am commencing Thursday 23 January, and ending Thursday 3 April. Northtots is FREE, no need to book, just turn up on the day.

Who is Dancing?
WHO IS DANCING? At the end of a hard day in May I found myself in my front room dancing to my favourite song and it made me wonder if, at that very moment was anyone else dancing too? Had anyone else done it before? And what would my grandparents think if they could see me? Who is dancing? is a moving collage of intimate moments coupled with live audio that tells a story of the future. Thursdays 5 - 7pm, commencing 23 January £7 per workshop or £70 for the 11 week course. BURSARIES available. Ages 14-18. Exeter Northcott Theatre and Kaleider (www.kaleider.com) are collaborating to bring young people together to make a brand new multimedia performance in Exeter. A series of weekly evening workshops (Thursdays 5-7pm) will run from January through to April 2014. They will be facilitated by Polly Agg-Manning and Chloe Whipple, with visiting practitioners. The Workshops will culminate in 2 performances at Exeter Northcott Theatre on 16 and 17 April. We will be holding an Open Workshop on Thurs 16 January (4.30pm-6.30pm) where you can find out more. VOICES: WOMEN, WRITING, THEATRE Mondays 7 - 9pm, commencing 20 January £7 per workshop or £65 for the ten week course Exeter Northcott Theatre in association with Dreadnought South West are offering an exciting platform for women writers at any stage in their writing career to explore how, why, where and what women write and have written for our contemporary stages. Led by Exeter based playwright Natalie McGrath (Oxygen, Rift, Coasting), this will also be a fantastic opportunity to write something in response to a provocation. To have this new piece of writing workshopped, developed, offered dramaturgical support and group feed back. There will be the opportunity to discuss your work at a session with director Josie Sutcliffe, (director of Oxygen, Dartington College of Arts), and to present your work on Exeter Northcott’s stage on Wed 9 April 2014. Situated at the heart of the University of Exeter’s Streatham Campus, the Exeter Northcott Theatre is easier to get to than you might think, with good public transport links and plenty of FREE parking a short distance from the theatre. N
The D bus leaves the bus stop opposite the front entrance of the theatre on North Park Road at 21mins and 51mins past the hour after 6pm and continues until 11.51pm (Mon - Sat) and 11.10pm (Sundays) to the city centre, ready for you to connect to other city centre late night services. We’d like to encourage those who are able to walk or cycle to the Theatre to do so whenever they can. There are several cycle paths and lanes in and around the Theatre and university campus to ensure the safety of cyclists and there is a cycle shelter to the left of the theatre’s front entrance.
Getting here by car
All car parking is free on campus after 6pm Mon - Fri, and all day on Saturdays and Sundays. All restrictions on parking are lifted for visitors during these times, but please be aware that car parks are pay and display at all other times.
Vehicle Routes and Parking Getting here by bus
The D and H buses run from Exeter City Centre direct to our theatre 7 days a week including Bank Holidays. However we recommend you catch the D bus if you are travelling from the city centre as the route is more direct. The last D services from the city centre to Exeter Northcott for evening shows Monday to Saturday are at 6.30pm (for 7pm shows), 7pm (for 7.30pm shows) and 7.30pm (for 8pm shows). Sunday D services start at 9am, then 9.30am and then at 55 and 25mins past the hour until 11.10pm.

The nearest car parks to the theatre are Car Parks C & D, located only a few minutes walk away, and Theatre patrons may park from 5pm if displaying a voucher which the Box Office will issue with your tickets on request. Please note the shuttle bus service no longer operates for theatre performances as there is now ample parking within a short distance.
Car Park C, is located next to the INTO Academic Centre at the top of Stocker Road. Entrance to the car park is on North Park Road, opposite the bus stop. Car Park D is located at the end of North Park Road and is just a five minute walk from the theatre. This is a permit holder only car park Mon – Fri until 6pm, but please check with the box office if attending a weekday daytime performance.
Stocker Road is open to pedestrians and cyclists only. Vehicles should enter the campus from Prince of Wales Road via Streatham Drive and then The Queen’s Drive, before joining North Park Road and then Rennes Drive (please see map below). The biggest demand for parking at Streatham Campus is expected to be between 9am and 6pm from Monday to Friday during the University term. For this reason we now only
schedule schools matinee performances during term time and advise customers to travel to the theatre by coach for these performances. This map will help you find the car parks. We’d like your visit to the Exeter Northcott Theatre to be as comfortable and enjoyable as possible. If you require any assistance please inform the Box Office on 01392 493493 in advance of your visit. Though not essential, you are advised to book in advance so that we can readily provide any assistance. There is level access to the theatre via our front entrance on Stocker Road and via our rear entrance on The Queen’s Drive. The upper levels of the theatre and the auditorium are accessed by a lift. Disabled patrons may also bring a companion FREE of charge. Wheelchair Spaces: the main auditorium has 6 wheelchair spaces on Row G, indicated with a circle symbol on the seating plan above. Toilets: there is level access from Row G to an accessible toilet. Parking: There are 4 parking spaces for blue badge holders on The Queens Drive, to the rear of the theatre, 10 spaces in Car Park C and 5 spaces at Northcote House (see Parking Map on page 53]. Assisted Hearing Facilities: we have an enhanced hearing system that improves the experience for hearing-impaired theatregoers by transmitting enhanced audio to visitors’ hearing aids, or specially provided headphones. Equipment for both must be collected from the stewards’ counter prior to the show. Guide / Hearing Dogs are always welcome: if you wish to take your dog into the performance, please let us know when booking so that we can arrange an adjacent seat. Alternatively, dogs can be cared for by a member of staff. How to Pay For Your Tickets You can pay for your tickets using Credit cards, Debit Cards, Cash or Cheque. Paying by Card: we accept most major cards (excluding American Express and Electron). Paying by Cheque: please make cheques payable to Exeter Northcott Theatre and post to the FREEPOST address above. Booking Fee: all transactions are subject to a £2 booking fee. However, we no longer charge for posting tickets or credit card processing. The booking fee does not apply to cash purchases or in person purchases under £10. All ticket prices shown include a £1 ENCORE FUND Fee which goes towards the cost of operating and maintaining the Exeter Northcott Theatre. Reservations: you can reserve your tickets for up to 5 days or until midday on the day of the performance, whichever is the sooner. Exchanges & Returns: we will be pleased to exchange your tickets for an alternative performance of the same production (subject to availability) up to 24 hours before the performance starts or credit your theatre account in full. Our popular Spires Café Bar welcomes customers with a range of well loved quality meals. Menus offer light lunches, show menus and chef’s specials. Our foods are locally sourced or homemade and made fresh to order (gluten free on request).
Dining before the show?
The new Spires table service and bookings policy has been warmly received by cast and customers alike, improving the ambience and service. We now invite you to book a table for your pre-show meal; theatre-goers can park on campus from 5pm and your dining experience can begin as early as 5.30pm, with the table yours for the evening. With limited availability of tables, walk in service is suspended on busy nights. To avoid disappointment we strongly advise that you book. Spires now accept card payments for all orders over £5.

Open Mon – Fri: 12pm – 2pm On performance nights: 2 ¼ hrs before the show starts Weekends: 2 ¼ hrs before the show starts (1hr for family shows) Exeter Northcott Theatre runs a fully licensed bar to compliment Spires cafe that supports local suppliers, with a dozen wines from Regency Wines of Exeter, bottled beers from Otter and Exeter breweries, and a stunning range of juices by Frobishers of Exeter and Luscombes of Buckfastleigh. Avoid queues and enhance your visit by ordering your interval drinks in advance, and remember that you can take cold drinks into the auditorium – just ask the bar staff for a plastic glass.
