WELCOME We set out two years ago to show that a new model for a regional theatre was possible at the Northcott.

Create and Curate. Bringing the best out there in here. Taking the best in here out there.

Well, we have been bold. The return to production. Prioritising education and outreach. An associates programme that delivers real opportunities for local companies to move into the midscale. When we took over people talked about the Northcott for all the wrong reasons. Now we are increasingly regarded within the profession and beyond as innovative, inventive – a model for the future. It sounds like blowing your own trumpet but it isn’t just my trumpet – a lot of people have come together to make it happen.

Also, we’ve done it just in time. The Northcott is fifty in 2017. Fifty years young. We’ll be celebrating with you.

In the next six months there are three additions to our offer.

In the early summer we are starting the National Tour of The Railway Children – our first commercial coproduction. Our show will go out on the number one circuit with the producer Nick Brooke.

In January we will be producing our first Impact project in partnership with the University of Exeter.

This is where we develop leading edge performance on subjects where UoE academic research is world leading. The first is about Epilepsy. Watch out for more information on our website.

In the summer we produce Shakespeare’s The Comedy of Errors with our first Graduate Company. This will be performed in Exeter’s Rougemont Gardens and on tour. Our work is supported by John Nettles – who has Northcott in his bones and has been here for us in every way. We will also be working on The Comedy of Errors with our Associate Company, Le Navet Bete.

And what of the work we curate? To follow Complicite’s first visit to Exeter we have a first visit from Matthew Bourne. Other Spring/Summer highlights include the new production of Death of a Salesman with Tim Pigott-Smith, our associate company Le Navet Bete’s premier of Dracula – The Bloody Truth, Sasha Regan’s new all male Mikado, Sally Cookson’s new stage version of La Strada and Curve’s new version of Roald Dahls’ The Twits.

People talk about partnership a lot in the arts, but the most important partnership is the one between us and you. I’m pleased to say there are more and more of you coming to see the work and use the building.

Young Men is a feature length dance film without dialogue shot on location in Northern France featuring dancers from BalletBoyz dance company. Based on the hugely successful stage production that premiered at Sadler’s Wells Theatre, London in 2015, it is choreographed

by Iván Pérez with a commissioned score by composer Keaton Henson.

The production is realised by Artistic Directors Michael Nunn and William Trevitt who were formerly leading dancers with The Royal Ballet.

Animal Farm - the history of a revolution that went wrong - is George Orwell’s brilliant satire on the corrupting influence of power. A GCSE student reads the classic novel and immediately becomes absorbed by the action of the animal rebellion. As the story ignites around him, he finds the ideals of the uprising are being corrupted and forgotten.

This visually engaging adaptation, underscored by live original music and incorporating physical theatre and puppetry, will explore how idealistic political views can easily be exploited and hijacked by propaganda.

It also contains cornflakes, sardines and even some stilton.

Mrs Twit is equally as foul and she hates Mr Twit just as much as Mr Twit hates her.

The Twits really are the most spiteful and revolting couple you could ever hope to meet. They spend their days playing wicked tricks on each other and mistreating Muggle-Wump monkeys.

They also have a particularly sticky trick to catch Roly-Poly birds for their bird pies. But not for much longer because the monkeys have a cunning plan to teach those terrible twits a lesson.

Directed by Max Webster (The Lorax at The Old Vic), this mischievous new show promises to be just as disgusting and repulsive as earth worms disguised as spaghetti – the perfect treat for all the family.

Surviving Madagascar Sun 12 March 7.30pm In Surviving Madagascar, National Adventurer of the Year two years running, Ash Dykes tells the story of how he came to take on his daring expeditions, before recounting his latest adventure; how he contracted the deadliest strain of Malaria, was held up by the military, dodged bandits, received nasty spider bites, built a raft for a dangerous river crossing, was almost washed away - at night - by another ferocious, Crocodile-infested, river and had to hack his way through near-impenetrable jungle as he became the first person ever to traverse the length of Madagascar’s interior.

Fascinating Aïda’s Dillie Keane Sun 26 March 7.30pm Dillie Keane takes a short break from her Fascinating Aïda gal pals to present her first solo show in 558 years.

With some brand new songs, some grand old favourites, gorgeous songs of love and songs of disgraceful filth, Dillie will break your heart, mend it again and have it sent to the cleaners for pressing. And she’ll give you her recipe for chutney while she’s at it.

Dillie will be accompanied on the piano by the very young but very talented Michael Roulston.

Speakers from the Edge presents

Richard Alston Dance Company Tue 14 & Wed 15 March 7.30pm The ever musical Richard Alston Dance Company returns with a programme including two dances to piano pieces that originate from completely different worlds. Both new, these works by Richard Alston and Martin Lawrance are accompanied live onstage by the extraordinary pianist Jason Ridgway.

Alston’s An Italian in Madrid is inspired by the sonatas of Domenico Scarlatti, a composer hugely influenced by Spanish music. This continues Alston’s fascination with the fusion of different cultures and styles and to explore this, Alston has invited BBC Young Dancer grand finalist Vidya Patel to join his company.

In Tangent, Martin Lawrance explores the vivid accents and attack of Tango. Four couples, intertwined but shifting and subtly syncopating, glide through the Four Seasons of Buenos Aires by Tango master Piazzolla, played live by Jason Ridgway on piano.

Alongside these new works are three razor sharp short pieces by Richard Alston: the micro-masterpiece Dutiful Ducks, the precise and succinct Isthmus Remix to music by Japanese composer Jo Kondo and Holderlin Fragments to the lyrical and intimate songcycle by Benjamin Britten. www.richardalstondance.com

Neon Dance Empathy Mon 27 March 7.30pm Movement, sound and innovative laser light show combine in this gripping and powerful dance performance.

What makes our behaviour uniquely human? Touching and emotionally charged, Empathy reflects on what influences us to empathise with others. Five dancers jostle for position - folding, lifting and balancing against one another as they navigate through a beguiling laser light design.

Taking inspiration from the work of psychologist Professor Simon Baron-Cohen (Zero Degrees of Empathy), Empathy is a truly theatrical experience where movement, sound and lighting combine and contribute in equal part.

Northanger Abbey A delightful stage version of Jane Austen’s earliest novel

At 17, she’s taken by her aunt to Bath where she encounters the social whirl denied her at home and befriends Isabella Thorpe and her boorish brother, John. She also meets the charming but eccentric Henry Tilney with his sister Eleanor and works hard to get to know them better. However, John Thorpe has other plans and is determined to have Catherine for himself. Following a string of deceptions, Catherine finally sees through his tricks and lies.

When she is invited by her beloved Henry to his home, Northanger Abbey, fact and fiction collide fuelled by the horror of the Gothic fantasy The Mysteries of Udolpho and her wild imagination gets the better of her judgement.

We’re delighted to welcome Ballet Central to Exeter for its debut visit, under the auspices of its new artistic director Christopher Marney. Comprised of final year students from the Central School of Ballet, the annual graduate tours have been a professional springboard for hundreds of dancers for over 30 years.

As we enter the second year of our newly created education and outreach programme, we are expanding our work beyond schools and colleges, and are thrilled to be making links with diverse areas of our community.

YOUNG COMPANY We have come a long way strengthening our links with schools and colleges in our first year, and now we want to grow a youth theatre company at the Exeter Northcott. We are inviting applications from Year 10 students to join a Summer School placement at the end of July.

STUDENT STANDBYS: Standbys must be bought in person and are available to students in full time education, are subject to availability, and must be purchased on the day of the performance up to one hour before the advertised performance start time.

Exeter Northcott Theatre has 6 wheelchair spaces on Row G. Accessible toilets: Exeter Northcott Theatre has level access from Row G. There are 3 parking spaces for blue badge holders on The Queen’s Drive, 10 spaces in Car Park C and 5 spaces at Northcote House (see Parking Map overleaf).

Exeter Northcott Theatre has an enhanced hearing system that improves the experience for hearing-impaired theatregoers by transmitting enhanced audio to visitor’s hearing aids, or specially provided headphones. Equipment for both must be collected from the lower bar prior to the show, and patrons are advised to book central auditorium seats for the best reception.

Accessible Performances: wherever possible we endeavour to provide BSL interpreted, audio described, captioned or relaxed performances – look out for these symbols on the event pages.

GETTING HERE IS EASY Situated at the heart of the University of Exeter’s Streatham Campus, the Exeter Northcott Theatre is easier to get to than you might think, with good public transport links and plenty of FREE parking a short distance from the theatre.

Getting home by bus The D bus leaves the bus stop opposite the front entrance of the theatre on North Park Road at 21mins and 51mins past the hour after 6pm and continues until 11.51pm (Mon - Sat) and 11.10pm (Sundays) to the city centre, ready for you to connect to other city centre late night services. Getting here by train From Exeter St Davids Station, take the 1km walk up the hill to the University Campus.

Getting here by bus The D and H buses run from Exeter City Centre direct to our theatre 7 days a week including Bank Holidays. However we recommend you catch the D bus if you are travelling from the city centre as the route is more direct.

The last D services from the city centre to Exeter Northcott for evening shows Monday to Saturday are at 6.30pm (for 7pm shows), 7pm (for 7.30pm shows) and 7.30pm (for 8pm shows). Sunday D services start at 9am, then 9.30am and then at 55 and 25mins past the hour until 11.10pm.

Getting here on foot or by bike We’d like to encourage those who are able to walk or cycle to the Theatre to do so whenever they can. There are several cycle paths and lanes in and around the Theatre and university campus to ensure the safety of cyclists and there is a cycle shelter to the left of the theatre’s front entrance.

Getting here by car All car parking is FREE on campus after 6pm Mon - Fri, and all day on Saturdays and Sundays, regardless of permit restrictions on signage. All restrictions on parking are lifted for visitors during these times, but please be aware that car parks are pay and display at all other times.

Vehicle Routes and Parking The nearest car parks to the theatre are Car Parks C & D, located only a few minutes walk away, and Theatre patrons may park from 5pm if displaying a voucher which the Box Office will issue with your tickets on request.

Car Park C, is located next to the INTO Academic Centre at the top of Stocker Road.

Entrance to the car park is on North Park Road, opposite the bus stop.

Car Park D is located at the end of North Park Road and is just a five minute walk from the theatre. This is a permit holder only car park Mon – Fri until 6pm, please check with the box office if attending a weekday daytime performance. /ExeterNorthcottTheatre

Stocker Road is open to pedestrians and cyclists only. Vehicles should enter the campus from Prince of Wales Road via Streatham Drive and then The Queen’s Drive, before joining North Park Road and then Rennes Drive (please see map below).

The biggest demand for parking at Streatham Campus is expected to be between 9am and 6pm from Monday to Friday during the University term. For this reason we now only schedule the following daytime shows: Green Matinees – please show your support for the environment and use Public Transport to

attend these discounted midweek matinee shows; School Matinees – we advise groups to travel to the theatre by coach for these performances.

We have experienced staff at your disposal to offer you all the advice and guidance you may need. Our kitchen is run by our head chef, Paul George Bending who can tailor a menu to suit your own requirements.

Our main auditorium seats up to 460 people, whilst our bar and restaurant area is a flexible space that can be laid out in a style to suit your needs.
