OLLOWING the discovery and controlled detonation of a World War Two bomb last weekend, students have criticised the handling of evacuations after improper housing, miscommunication and damage to property. The University has announced that residents of Birks Grange Village and Clydesdale Rise will not be allowed back to their accommodation for the rest of this term, despite campus security initially telling students “overnight was the worst case scenario”. Exeposé has obtained photographs of the now-closed halls showing shattered windscreens, smashed windows and broken roofing. With most of the evacuees currently living in hotels - some as far as the 34 miles away Taunton Holiday Inn - we spoke to students about their experiences. One student from Birks Block F has been living in the Mercure Southgate Hotel for over a week, where rooms usually cost £46 a night. Given half-hour windows to pick up belongings left behind, the student describes it as “very stressful” because “we don’t know when our next opportunity will be”. There is confusion as to what will happen after this, too: “We’re essentially bringing all our belongings back to the hotel just to remain in the dark again for a few days about where we’ll be moving
