LOW CARBON SUPPLIER

Climate change – are we doing enough?

Kim Caron – Business Economist Firms in Canada are being urged by their customers, employees and shareholders to do more when it comes to Climate Change. To be labeled disingenuous with respect to climate change brings real risk of reputational damage and loss of value One Canadian company is listening. Executive Mat Service is making it easier for firms to make sustainable procurement decisions by posting the Company’s climate impact rating directly on its service invoices. “Many building services, such as matting, come with a large carbon footprint, however, if the rest of the industry adopted the same practices as Executive Mat the world would be a better place” said Jeff Grabinsky Vice President. Executive Mat has developed patented technology that reduces over 90% the environmental impact associated with floor matting services. Floor matting is an essential PPE for every business, adopting more sustainable practices is good for the environment and climate.

Most truck mounted carpet cleaning systems use propane to heat water to 200’ Fahrenheit. CARBON INTENSITY OF STEAM CLEANING FLOOR MATTING Typical mobile carpet cleaning systems consume 4.8 us gallons of water per minute (gpm). The average length of time to properly wash a 5’x10’ mat is 5 minutes. Therefore to clean 1,000 ft2 of heavily soiled matting takes 1.7 hours or 490 us gallons of water. Wash water is typically heated to 200F. Energy required to heat wash water from 40F = (200-40) x 8.34 lbs./gal. x 490 us gals. = 654,000 btu/1,000 ft2 (or 654,000 / 3,412 (btu/kw) 192 kw).

Competitor Mat Washing

TRADITIONAL MAT WASHING

Washing Water Use Industrial floor mat wash programs typically consume 1 us gallon per pound of floor matting being washed5. With an average weight of 1lb per square foot (ft2)6 of matting the required to wash 1,000 ft2 = 1,000 us gallons. Wash water is typical tempered at 100F. Energy required to heat the wash water from 40F = (100-40)7 x 8.34 lbs./gal. x 1,000 us gals = 500,400 btu/1,000 ft2 washed. Electrical Use Average 20 min load @ 25 kw (full load amps) = 25 x 1/3 hr. = 8.3 kw/275 lbs. for 1,000 lbs. = 3.6 loads x 8.3 = 30 kw per 1,000 ft2 processed.

Competitor Mat Drying

Mat Drying – Natural Gas Electrical Average 30 min load @ 2.24 kw + 5.59 kw = 7.83 kw x .5 (30 min) = 3.92 kw per 200 lbs. (dry only) = ~ 19 kw/1,000 lbs. Natural Gas Average dryer = 1,000,000 btu (293 kw) @ 300 lb. load size. Average cycle time = 20 minutes. Gas used for drying = approx. 3 loads equal = 1,000 ft2 = 293 kw/h

Executive Mat - CDF

Running amps = 138 amps @ 480 volts 138 x 480 = 66.2 kw/h Average run speed = 20’ per minute = 1,200 feet/hour. Average width = 4.5 ft = 5,400 ft/hour 66.2 kw/h / 5.4 = 12.3 kw/1,000 ft Natural Gas = 0 Water use: 1.5 – 2.0 gpm.
