President’s letter

On behalf of the New Orleans Hispanic Heritage Foundation’s Board of Directors, I’d like to extend my sincere congratulations to the New Orleans Hispanic Heritage Foundation Scholars Class of 2025. We are honoring 122 outstanding Scholars; 76 with scholarships and 46 with academic recognitions from 22 participating high schools throughout the Greater New Orleans area. We are extremely proud to celebrate these deserving scholars alongside their families, their educators, and their community.

To the scholars, your dedication to academic excellence is inspiring to us all. Education and character are amongst the most important foundational elements to success, and you proudly demonstrate both. We encourage you to continue on your developmental journeys and always strive for greatness. To our graduating seniors, embrace this new chapter in your lives, and pursue your dreams with passion. We look forward to learning about all of the exceptional things you will accomplish in the future.

Congratulations to the families of our scholars. It is your support, encouragement, and commitment to education that has enabled them to excel. You should be very proud of all that they have achieved and will achieve for the betterment of our community.

Our deepest appreciation goes out to those who have supported our scholars. To the dedicated teachers, administrators, and mentors who work tirelessly for the benefit of their students, your guidance, encouragement, and commitment to these inspiring scholars have undoubtedly been instrumental to their success.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude and appreciation to our Partners for Education sponsors, Pan-American Life Insurance Group, Entergy Corporation, Gulf Coast Bank, and Regions Bank for their commitment to supporting our mission. Through these wonderful partnerships, we can sustain our Scholarship Program, fuel the future of the Foundation, and make a difference in the lives of our students. We want to thank the Saints organization for allowing us to be part of the 2024-25 season New Orleans Saints 50/50 Raffle. We also are proud to be one of 65 nonprofits awarded a grant through the Super Bowl LIX Legacy Program, Impact 59 Powered by @entergy in the category of Equity and Inclusion.

And, last, but certainly not least, the New Orleans Hispanic Heritage Foundation and its Scholarship Program would not be possible without the incredible support of our generous Azúcar Ball sponsors, grant donors, supporters, and dedicated volunteers.

We are excited to announce that this year’s Azúcar Ball, presented by Pan-American Life Insurance Group, will take place on the evening of Saturday, December 6, 2025. The event will celebrate the Hispanic culture.

To date, the New Orleans Hispanic Heritage Foundation has awarded 1311 high school and freshman-year college scholarships to high-achieving and hard-working Hispanic students through the generosity of our many sponsors and donors. We are extremely grateful for the generosity of our community and truly appreciate the contributions of all of our loyal sponsors and donors.

Again, congratulations to the New Orleans Hispanic Heritage Foundation Scholars Class of 2025. We hope that all of our scholars, their families, educators, administrators, and supporters stay in touch.

Special Scholarships

The NOHHF and the Fowler Family have created a special scholarship in memory of our beloved co-founder and Board member Cristina J. Fowler. The Cristina J. Fowler Memorial Scholarship was made possible through the generous donations of her family and friends. This year five scholarships have been awarded to students from Jesuit High School: Giovanni Matranga, Bryan LeivaOrellana, Gael Garza-Morales, Sebastian Fernandez, and Ethan Burgos.

Cristina was a unique and amazing community activist who made innumerable contributions to the Hispanic community in the New Orleans area. In 1990, she was the chairwoman of the first Azúcar Ball, an event that has generated funds for over 1311 scholarships to students who identify with Hispanic heritage and who have outstanding academic records and involvement in their community. She was selfless and dedicated and always concerned about the less fortunate and all of those who needed help.

The New Orleans Hispanic Heritage Foundation and Consulate of Mexico in New Orleans with the support of Mexico’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Institute for Mexicans Abroad (IME for its acronym in Spanish) have come together to create a collaboration to grant IME-Becas (IMEScholarships) to students of Mexican heritage through the NOHHF University Scholarship Program. The scope of the IME-Becas program is to offer economic resources to students with Mexican heritage enrolled in Higher Education Institutions in the United States.

This year seven students from Bonnabel Magnet Academy High School, East Jefferson High School, New Orleans Center for Creative Arts, Patrick F. Taylor Academy, and Riverdale High School, will receive IME-Becas. The students awarded are Luciano Martinez, Mayraly Apolinar Contreras, Esther Judith Flores, Shecid Flores-Mendoza, Renata Orihuela, Nyla Selene Gonzalez, and Andre Alarcon.

Congratulations to our outstanding Scholars!

Dear NOHHF Friend,

The New Orleans Hispanic Heritage Foundation aims to cultivate and promote the Hispanic heritage of New Orleans and the greater region. Besides supporting activities that promote and share the Hispanic heritage and culture through art, food, and music, the Foundation uses its Scholarship Program to invest in outstanding high school and college-bound students by awarding merit-based academic scholarships to assist with the cost of their education and to encourage academic achievement. We believe that educating the youth of New Orleans will provide them with better life choices and the tools to shape their future as responsible and educated citizens who can lead New Orleans and Louisiana to a better tomorrow.

Since 1993 the Foundation has awarded over 1311 High School and Freshman year College Scholarships. Contributions from Give NOLA Day will allow the Foundation to expand its Scholarship program and cultural programming. Your GiveNOLA Day gift to the NOHHF represents hope and much-needed financial aid for the hardworking students who identify with Hispanic heritage

Any donation towards our GiveNOLA Day goal will be greatly appreciated. Early giving is underway right now, and the annual giving day is May 6th. Donate here: https://www.givenola.org/organization/new-orleans-hispanicheritage-foundation or Scan the QR Code below
