“PERFUME, LIKE SILK, WINE AND FLOWERS, IS ONE OF LIFE’S NECESSARY LUXURIES; ITS AROMA IS LIKE A GOOD WINE, WHICH NEEDS TO BE OXYGENATED BEFORE IT REACHES THE POINT OF PERFECTION” Sophia Loren

here are those who have a vision but take it no further. On the other hand, there are those who take the plunge to bring a visionary idea to life and achieve success. In order to be successful, a process must be followed. Be perceptive, daring, and determined! And be patient, because success also needs to be oxygenated! To give one example, in order to create a masterpiece like the one Viruca Yebra has, with her new book “LA ÚLTIMA CONDESA NAZI”, an intricate compound of carefully studied ideas and experiences would be needed to be able to describe them in a book like this, which I highly recommend!

At Exclusive Life Magazine, the fragrance of success of the companies that have backed our publication can be perceived from afar: Engel & Voelkers Marbella closed the year announcing record sales in the luxury real estate sector, with a total volume of 561.600.000€. The real estate company launches ‘All About Home’, a sister company offering comprehensive services exclusively to E&V clients. On the cover, Janus R. Nielsen, the successful entrepreneur behind the biggest Tech Company in Andalusia. Nicola Morrissey opens up her home to tell us about the great success of Nero Premium Vodka. The strong bet for outstanding projects such as Benalús and Karl Lagerfeld Villas Marbella are proof that the Golden Mile is in fashion. The variety of restaurants and nightlife in our city is incredible, with great shows to liven up the evenings, and I encourage you to discover the selection we highlight in our magazine. Let’s celebrate this season and fill it with joy and colour. Choose the shades of Love; passion red or sweet and shy pink. Dress for success, and make this your big bet for 2022! We have a few suggestions for you in our fashion section… All this and much more! I hope you enjoy reading this issue, Best wishes,

t is almost 20 years ago Janus R. Nielsen, a highly successful Danish Tech entrepreneur, arrived to Costa del Sol. Apart from one prior visit his knowledge about Marbella was very limited. But he liked the sun and golf, so he thought it would be the perfect place to retire. Only in his early thirties he already made big success with his first IT security company and thought it was time to do something else. Although the original plan moving to Marbella was to enjoy life, play golf and spend time with his family, it was not exactly how it all turned out. After a few years with a relaxing life in the sun and on the golf course Janus decided to set up a new business, MYMobileSecurity. It was around the same time the first smartphones from Apple and Samsung was hitting the market and in no time his company and product MYAndroidSecurity became one of the most downloaded Antivirus program in the world with more than 160.000 new users every single week! But only after a few years he decided to sell the company to some American investors. Yet again it was back in the sun and on the golf course, but obviously it didn’t last for long this time either. In 2014 he founded AnyTech365 and now seven years later and with lots of problems and great sacrifices on the way, all his hard work has been paying off. The innovative entrepreneur has now and very impressively managed to create a company that by Financial Times ranks 27th in Europe out of the top 1000 fastest growing companies, not to mention “The Fastest Growing Technology Company in Spain 2019”. This achievement seams even more impressive when thinking about the fact that Marbella and Costa del Sol not by any means are known for having the infrastructure favouring IT and Tech companies. AnyTech365 is an IT Security, Help and Support company whose mission is to ensure private consumers and small business daily “peace of mind” when using their Internet connected devices like Smartphones, computers, laptops and tablets. With more than 400 employees, most of them based in offices in Marbella and Torremolinos, the company is helping and protecting tens of thousands of people every day. It is busy and exiting times for the company Janus R Nielsen only 7 years ago started from scratch in Marbella. Already today it is one of the biggest and most respected in the industry and cover customers and users in more than 20 countries all with native speaking and highly skilled Apple iOS, Windows and Android experts. The company is

so well respected as it recently managed to sign their biggest contract to date, an agreement with MediaMarkt, the biggest consumer electronics chain in Europe with more than 1000 outlets. AnyTech365 shall over the next couple of years deploy 2 Help and Support agents in every single shop throughout Europe, which potentially means more than 2000 new AnyTech365 employees. This partnership will eventually transform the company into one of the absolute biggest in the world in their industry! The whole adventure began in Gothenburg, Sweden, when Janus started out as a Shop Manager Trainee in the popular Danish retail chain, Jysk, having completed his studies in International Business Economics. A quick learner, he gained invaluable knowledge and experience in sales and business management while in charge of various stores before moving back to Denmark as he landed the position of Nordic Regional Manager for the Canadian software company Corel Corporation. In less than 4 years, he had positioned the Nordic market as the best performing region in the world for the company, and in 1995, he was awarded “Sales Executive of the Year” among more than 1,500 candidates worldwide. After 6 successful years at Corel Corporation he was headhunted by one of the biggest software companies in the world, American giant

Computer Associates to head up their European security software division as a Regional Vice President. It was here the foundation and idea for his first company evolved. By early 2000 there was no stopping the progressive and innovative Dane, who set up his first independent business, MYSecurityCenter, with a childhood friend. Their aim was to deliver top-quality, user-friendly, economical antivirus software to private consumers. A few years later, MYSecurityCenter was awarded “Emea Partner of the Year” by an American Fortune 500 company. It since grew from being a small, one-product company to an international company with broad recognition and a wide product portfolio. From then on, everything business-wise soared and Janus took the decision to move to Marbella and in a very short time everything reached new heights. Suddenly, Janus had not only one, but several businesses, including MYSecurityCenter, AnyTech365, CharityAntivirus and MYMobileSecurity. While AnyTech365 does business on an international level, they also think locally. Janus has always been enthusiastic about supporting and forming part of worthy projects. AnyTech365 has among many local activities become the main sponsor and one of the driving parts of the biggest sport events in Andalucía, the international ATP 250 tennis tournament “AnyTech365 Andalucía

Open”. In 2020 they hosted 2 weeks of professional tennis at the Puente Romano Tennis Club in the months of March and April. And the goal is clear. Janus and his partners want to bring the tournament forward and make it one of the biggest sports event in Spain at the same level as the tournaments in Madrid and Barcelona and make it as famous as the fashionable tournament in Monaco. “If they can do it in Monaco why should we not be able to do the same in Marbella? Marbella have it all; fashionable, great weather, fame, glory and a great history”; Janus R Nielsen boldly claim! One of the reasons Janus wanted to make this event possible was not only to see the tournament grow. He loves living in Marbella and all Marbella has to offer. “I want to see Marbella great again, and if we can contribute just a little I would be very proud and happy to do so….I JUST WANT TO SEE MARBELLA GREAT AGAIN!”; he has often been quoted. “Bringing an international top sports event to Marbella will for sure help putting this city with so much to offer back on the map!”. The 2020 event was live broadcasted in more than 40 countries with more than 700 hours of live top tennis from Marbella and the famous Hotel Puente Romano Tennis Club. So it is obviously clear that the entrepreneur knows what he wants and how to get there. But EXCLUSIVE LIFE MAGAZINE |

as we all know; beside every successful business man stands a smart and clever woman. And in Janus case this is indeed also the case. Janus wife, Carla Morales is involved in all aspects of his business decisions and endeavours. Carla is half Spanish half Cuban. “Carla being Spanish and with a degree in corporate law it is obvious I turn to her a lot. All ideas and decisions I discuss with her first”; Janus R Nielsen explains. Carla also manage all events and VIP arrangements for both the companies as well as the tennis tournament. “Obviously this is a very time consuming responsibility, but this is not Janus strongest side and I can see he appreciate my involvement and it eases his stress level and gives him more time to focus on what he does best; business!”; Carla say. Carla has an enormous reach and lots of great friends and contract in Marbella and that has indeed been a very “My family is important part of their success in everything, Marbella, Janus bethey are the lieve. “I really think fuel in my life, that a strong and supportive spouse they are what can provide great keeps me going diversification and every single a different but very important view on day. And believe it or not, all Janus and Carla’s impressive activities and achievements in Marbella is actually only secondary for them! Their family is everything and always above anything else. They have 4 kids, 2 sons and 2 daughters. William 14, Alex 10, Carla 9 and little Joanna 5. “My family is everything, they are the fuel in my life, they are what keeps me going every single day. Carla is simply the best and most impressing mother in the world”; Janus proudly say! So watch out, let’s see what is coming next for one of Marbella’s new power couples. “At least we are trying and want to contribute and make a difference. I don’t believe we are done yet”; Janus ends. ■

From a business point of view, it has been very challenging for lots of businesses especially those in and connected to the hospitality industry. Venues have been opening and closing, facing restrictions and then the lower tourist numbers. However, I try to stay optimistic and we have thrown ourselves into fully working with local venues, retailers and charities and it is paying off. It has brought us real opportunities. Our approach has been to offer venues a brand experience, obviously with Nero Vodka being the central show piece supported by our own mixologists, spectacular music and entertainment. I’m extremely proud of how hard the Nero team worked this summer and the brand recognition this gained. We love working with the great and diverse hospitality sector here in Marbella and are stocked in some of the leading venues along the coast including Ocean Club, La Sala Group, Breathe and The Metro Group to name just as few. Also, this year we were delighted to secure a listing in the newly refurbished, flagship, Gourmet Club in El Corte Ingles, Puerto Banus. This is just the start for Nero Drinks Company and we have even bigger plans for 2022! You talk of bigger plans, what does 2022 hold for Nero Drinks Company and the Morrissey family? A busy year for sure! Nero Drinks Company will continue to support and work with local venues, adding more to our client list as well as launching in Mallorca, Tenerife, the UK and we are finalising plans to launch in America!

We are also opening an exclusive, 5 star wellness retreat overlooking the sea in La Cala. We have been busy overseeing the luxury building project, gathering an expert team to deliver the latest therapies and treatments. We will have a full time nutritionist, inhouse yoga and meditation specialist, colonic hydrotherapy, cryotherapy and lots more. We are due to open in April 2022 and booking are already rolling in. Wow, you certainly have been busy! How do you strike a work life balance? The family always comes first and that is my driving force. Everything John and I do is to provide a happy and secure life for Sean and our family. I love our business but my favourite job is being a mum to Sean. Having said that when you are passionate about your business succeeding it’s difficult not to bring work into home life! Like many couples with businesses, John and I sometimes disagree but we respect each others opinion understand that we are both working towards the same goal of success! John and I try to arrange trips away with Sean where we switch off and enjoy family time. This year we’ve made the most of the beautiful places on our doorstep with trips to Malaga, Sancti Petri, Tarifa and Seville. It also allows us to check out other venues we can work with along the coast! And now a question for Sean, can you think of four words to describe your mum? Strict! Kind, hardworking and beautiful.

auricio Giovanini specialises in extracting the most authentic flavours from the products he uses. The result is exquisite dishes for demanding palates, which have become a consolidated gastronomic proposal since the Argentinian chef relocated to Spain, inspired by chefs such as Adrià, Arzak, Subijana or Berasategui. The ambience at Bar de Fuegos is relaxed and it is uninfluenced by fads and fashions, boasting its own unique style, and never compromising quality. It has an open kitchen with a charcoal oven and grill, where the dishes are prepared in full view of the diners, who can observe the dexterity of the chefs in vertiginous activity. Situated in the neighbourhood of Chueca, what this restaurant offers is a modern, innovative experience, not only through its exquisite gastronomic proposals, but also from an aesthetic viewpoint. A modern grill restaurant, hallmarked by the essence of someone whose love of cooking is in his blood. The concept created by Giovanini is a mixture of sensations for the senses, with an inviting atmosphere and an impressive display of large format art. TO THE AROMA OF A GOOD WINE Giovanini, an expert in the use of essential vegetable juices, heads a team who offer exquisite rustic food. A classic, simple concept, yet original and sophisticated at the same time. The interior design and decoration is by Pato Duhalde, and in the kitchen, the chef ’s masterful touch can be seen, with products from land and sea. The aromas of the wood fire and the fresh ingredients of the dishes, accompanied by a good national or Argentinian wine, or an exquisitely prepared gin and tonic, complete the experience. Bar de Fuegos is not a typical Argentinian steakhouse, but a cutting-edge grill restaurant, different from all the others in Madrid’s multicultural environment. Its menu includes starters such as grilled nems with shrimps and hot chilli sauce, or roasted cauliflower with spices, kimchee sauce and sour cream. There are also salads with ingredients that have been cooked over the embers. And of course, meats, such as rump steak, Argentinian fore rib or Iberian pork loin and shoulder loin; as well as fish, such as sea bass and tuna. FUEGO CRUZADO Giovanini has successfully created a lively space with elegance, soul and charm, which makes the diner feel taken care of. But far from being content with offering quality, the Argentinian chef has decided to take his gastronomic skills a step further, sharing his time in the kitchen at Bar de Fuegos with fellow professionals, so that his clients can also participate, interact, and enjoy other complementary features. Over the next few months, the Argentinian chef will be sharing the kitchen with his fellow professionals. He has already visited Diego Gallegos, with a Michelin Star at Sollo Restaurante, in Fuengirola, with whom he prepared an incredible eight-course menu. Each chef prepared two starters, a main course and a dessert. Also participating in Fuego Cruzado was José Carlos García, with a Michelin Star at Restaurante José Carlos García, in Málaga. Along with Giovanini, they created a spectacular menu that proved to be an overwhelming success with the diners. ■

MAURICIO GIOVANINI CH E F D E B AR D E F UEG OS T E X T: E VA D E L A M O

-cero Joaquín Torres & Rafael Llamazares Architects is a company that was set up in 1996, whose activity is focused on the integrated development of architectural projects. The team, lead by Joaquín Torres and assisted by his partner, Rafael Llamazares, has been growing ever since, and is now made up of more than 100 professionals, distributed between two offices in Spain (Madrid and A Coruña), and Arab Emirates, Dubai; working in recent years and to date on various projects in other countries, such as Brazil, Vietnam, Lebanon, Russia and Austria, among others. In recent times, the demand of our clients has led us to expand our field of action to project management, carrying out turnkey projects that were previously designed by our team. Residential building in Aguilas Murcia A-cero

Our working method is based on an in-depth study of the client’s program of needs. Any problems that might arise are taken into account, the possible solutions are studied, as well as the material possibilities of building the project with these in mind: we imagine, we design and we convince. The key factor in our work is to maintain the common thread of the idea throughout the whole process, from the outset to the project management, becoming a more formal concept with sculptural value that is transformed into architecture. In this sense, “what” is just as important as “how”. The project must be developed from the most general concept until the last detail is defined, making it a reality. We conceive architecture as a complete concept, which not only comprises the walls, but also interior design, extending to include landscape gardening. Over the years, we have collaborated with construction companies and developers, participating in public tenders, or providing consultancy services, jointly developing projects with other architectural and engineering firms, and collaborating in management and urban planning matters with law firms. Given our expertise in residential projects, and on many occasions encouraged by our clients, we launched into interior design, and even furniture design, with the aim of finding customised solutions that were coherent with the architecture itself. Thus, in 2011, A-cero opened its showroom in Madrid, a large space displaying the furniture collections designed by the studio, as well as containing the interior design department.

Olivia Wilde The world of cinema has made this colour historic with the iconic dresses that have been featured on the silver screen. From Marilyn Monroe in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes to Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman, red is one of Hollywood’s strongest bets. Actresses dare to wear this vivid colour knowing that it suits all skin types, as it brightens paler complexions as well as enhancing a tan. Those who wear red convey self-confidence, sensuality and a unique vitality. It is a colour that instantly empowers women and gives them positive energy, which is something actresses use to their advantage.

HOLLYWOOD’S EMBLEMATIC COLOUR

Red is a bold, powerful colour. It is proven to have an influence on the person who wears it, even helping to increase their pulse rate and blood pressure; physical effects that are undoubtedly reflected in their attitude. That is why it has been Hollywood’s emblematic colour since time immemorial, and is one of the reasons why many actresses choose red gowns, tailored by the best brands and the most prestigious designers, for the big galas. Angelina Jolie, Cameron Diaz, Charlize Theron, Emma Stone, Jennifer Lawrence or Sandra Bullock have all chosen this colour at some point in order to look their best on the red carpet. And the fact is that it suits the younger generations, like Zendaya, as much as the veteran actresses, like Sophia Loren or Jane Fonda, who look spectacular in their red gowns. What distinguishes the different models is the style of the designer who creates them. One of the most memorable dresses is the one Charlize Theron wore at the 2016 Oscar gala. A glam-inspired Dior design with a train and plunging neckline, which the actress paired with a Harry Winston necklace. There are those who prefer classic strapless cuts, like Natalie Portman, who wore a 1954 Christian Dior haute couture evening dress at the 84th Annual Academy Awards, leaving the audience awestruck by its simplicity and its eye-catching style. In 2019, Zendaya wore an original dress with a red top for the Spider-Man film premiere. Designed by Armani, and sculpting her exquisite figure, it certainly made heads turn. Adriana Lima, Olivia Wilde, Brie Larson, Freida Pinto and the models Heidi Klum or Naomi Campbell, among others, have also worn vibrant gowns to walk the red carpet, demonstrating that red is the go-to colour of Hollywood. If you choose a red dress and dare to emulate the most famous actresses on an evening as special as that of Valentine’s Day, you will be opting for a timeless, flattering colour that never goes out of fashion. Your face will instantly light up and you will feel powerful and attractive at the same time. Elegance, sensuality and glamour. All in red. A real show-stopper. EXCLUSIVE LIFE MAGAZINE |

Rabat JEWELLERY TO SHINE AT ANY OCCASION The eternal sparkle of diamonds and precious stones is the theme of Rabat’s latest trend. The “Shine of Colors” campaign, inspired by the power of color, is composed of the brand’s most iconic and characteristic pieces, which highlight the personality of the woman wearing them, and illuminate those special moments. Valentine’s Day is approaching, with a wealth of unique jewellery, in which diamonds and colored sapphires compose iconic pieces that transmit joy, life and hope. Rabat’s Diamond and Rainbow Collections are the protagonists of Shine of Colors; jewellery to shine at any occasion. FINE CRAFTSMANSHIP A symbol of purity and perfection, the Diamond Collection reflects the fine craftsmanship of Rabat jewellery and their commitment to preserving the natural beauty and eternal sparkle of diamonds. The pieces in this collection, in white gold and diamonds of different cuts (oval, princess and brilliant), add elegance and radiance, reflecting the essence of this precious stone. Fancy diamonds, which form part of some of the Diamond Collection pieces, envelop the jewellery in a yellow hue, and are glittering and alluring both in daylight and at night. INSPIRED BY NATURE For its part, the Rainbow Collection, inspired by nature, is made up of jewels that symbolise the sky, with the colours of the rainbow; the air, with diamonds; water, with blue sapphires, and the earth, with rose gold. Rainbow is a collection that brings a sense of fun and light with the most striking and colourful jewellery, for the woman who does not want to go unnoticed. The diamonds, which sparkle more than ever before in Shine of Colors, are a testament to Rabat’s long-standing expertise in the sourcing and processing of this precious stone. In fact, all Rabat diamonds have the GIA quality certificate and are procured using the Kimberley Process (KPCS), an international certification that guarantees the marketing of diamonds of legal and ethical origin. ■

B

itcoin, Ethereum and other cryptocurrencies have grown exponentially and have attracted a lot of attention. A growing and easily accessible alternative financial market has been created around cryptocurrencies, and their use as a means of payment in countless transactions has been developed in parallel. If it is a means of payment, it is obvious that it could be a means of payment in the real estate market and, if it were, it would be easy to foresee its exponential projection. Indeed, there is no shortage of analysts who claim that cryptocurrencies will play an important role in the future real estate market, with their use becoming widespread due to the agility and security of these transactions if they are carried out entirely through a Blockchain network or through the tokenisation of real estate.

However, this would not be the only difficulty. Given that it is an exchange and not a sale, both parties to the transaction would be subject to transfer tax (assuming that the property is second-hand and not a new build), meaning that both the exchanger acquiring the property and the person acquiring the bitcoins would have to pay transfer tax. Moreover, both parties would also have to declare their capital gains if any were generated as a result of the said exchange. This would be another obstacle, since the transferor of the property in a normal sale is not subject to transfer tax and the buyer of a property is not subject to capital gains tax.

It is not difficult to make sense of these projections, but the truth is that bitcoins, Ethereum and other cryptocurrencies are currently not money in Spain. They are an intangible asset whose value is governed by the law of supply and demand.

However, even if you manage to overcome this difficulty and are still interested in the exchange transaction, you, as the seller of the property or buyer of bitcoins, or vice versa, will face the problem of the continually fluctuating value of bitcoin, which means that you will have to set a specific day to fix the exchange rate between bitcoin and the euro.

Back in June 2019, the Supreme Court stated that “bitcoin is nothing more than an intangible capital asset, in the form of a unit of account defined by means of computer and cryptographic technology called bitcoin, the value of which is that which each unit of account or portion thereof achieves through the concert of supply and demand in the sale of these units through Bitcoin trading platforms”, adding that “although the price of each bitcoin is fixed at the cost of the exchange made, and there is therefore no world or single price for bitcoin, the amount of each unit in the different purchase transactions (due to the same rules of supply and demand) tends to equalise at any given moment.”

If you are also able to articulate this agreement, you would have to formalise the corresponding private contract and then formalise the sale by means of a notarial deed. At this point, in the private contractual formalisation of the exchange and subsequently in its public formalisation before a notary, you would have to manage the necessary checks on the prevention of money laundering and the financing of terrorism and verify the origin and traceability of the funds with special attention to the acquisition and payment operations of the cryptocurrencies, whereby the exchanger who delivers bitcoins would have to show and guarantee the origin and legality of the cryptocurrencies used.

Therefore, if bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies are not money, if they are not currencies, can you purchase a property in bitcoins? The answer in principle would be simple. You can acquire a property by paying for it in bitcoins, but you could not enter into a sales contract, you would have to enter into an exchange contract in which each of the contracting parties would be obliged to give one thing in order to receive another, meaning that one would give the property and receive bitcoins and the other would give bitcoins and receive the property. Simplifying as much as possible, it could be said that the main difference between an exchange and a sale is that a sale involves a price (which is fixed in legal tender) and an exchange does not. In other words, the exchange is an exchange of things without a price.

Finally, if all the previous stages have been completed, the only thing left to do is to seek an agreement, possibly with an exchange platform (OTC) to act as a depository for the funds and enable the signing of the deed of exchange and the receipt of the bitcoins by the property seller to go hand in hand with the codes that allow the notary to document the transaction.

This means that in order to formalise this type of transaction

86

you have to find a seller, a property owner, who is willing to accept bitcoins or other cryptocurrencies.

| EXCLUSIVE LIFE MAGAZINE

I think it is suffice to conclude that although you can purchase a property with bitcoins - as the most widespread cryptocurrency - the way to do so is not without difficulties and in fact, although it can be done, this market is currently insignificant in Spain. There is still a long way to go, not only legislatively or operationally, but also in terms of the socio-economic rooting of these assets, because the transaction between assets with a reasonably stable value and others with a rapidly fluctuating value at the moment is risky. ■

With her striking hand-made portraits and her unique technique, she has managed to break the boundaries of one of the most unique and challenging mediums an artist can work with: glass. Exclusive Life Magazine sat down with Isabelle for an interview meant to explore her technique, inspirations, and one-of-a-kind creations. What sparked the artistic flame in you? I was a creative person even as a child and I have always been very interested in art, proportions, aesthetics and beauty. My parents encouraged me to keep this spark alive by pursuing an artistic education, so I studied at SISA, the Antwerp City Institute for Decorative Arts and Crafts. How did you develop your unique technique? What was the road, the process that led to you being dubbed “the queen of dots” in the artistic world? My first encountered with glass as an artistic medium took place in the studio of my husband Dirk Neefs, who is a glass artisan that handcrafts magnificent stained-glass windows for various purposes such as churches, monuments, as well as for interior design. I was inspired, particularly by the colours, and started playing with the glass and exploring. After creating my first work (a portrait of my youngest daughter) I realized that glass was – though difficult – a rewarding and a special material to work with. The result was amazing and intriguing – for myself and others. I had intuitively developed a unique style. However, the artistic maturity I currently have wasn’t something that happened over night. It took years of intense practice and juxtaposing countless of pieces of coloured glass to refine my method and truly master the colour theory. In time, I developed a unique glass-fusing technique, whereby pieces of glass in different colours, sizes and textures are melted together at approximately 800°C to form a completely new colour from a distance. With this technique, I have been able to achieve striking optical effects, capturing the dance of light and colour in a way that plays on the

perceptive ability of the eye and mind of the viewer. What made you think about starting to cut glass into small pieces to create portraits? I was inspired by the classical technique of pointillism. Pointillists used small, distinct dots of pure colour on their canvases, placed in close proximity to one another. And the brain of the viewer blured them into new colours. I use a similar technique, using layers of coloured glass. I have adapted, reinvented and re-contextualized pointillism to create my contemporary style portraits. Thousands of pieces of glass are arranged in specific patterns to form the optical impression of a new image featuring intricate detail, lighting, and shadows. The seemingly random forms and colours on the surface of the canvas come together to form a distinct, expressive, tactile image. What are the properties of glass that make it such an inspiring and effective medium of artistic expression for you? Oh, people rarely think of glass or give it the respect it deserves. Glass is a versatile artistic medium, uniting several contrasting properties which make it a delight to work with. Resilient yet fragile. Modest yet expressive. Delicate yet powerful. Light yet heavy. Glass is perfect for expressing the ambiguous relationship between distance and proximity, between appearance and reality. These are themes I explore intensely in my work. Where can people find your works? My artworks can be purchased in galleries across the world. Dubai, Saint-Tropez, Paris, Copenhagen, Monaco, New York , London – to name but a few. I have taken part in countless exhibitions in all parts of the globe. Although I have been in the artistic world for almost a decade now, it was only in June of 2021 that I decided to open my own personal gallery in Puerto Banus (Marbella-Spain). It’s called BLIZZ ART GALLERY. I am both proud and excited about this project and I am certain that many more will follow. I invite all people who want to breathe in a moment of beauty and calm to visit BLIZZ!

¿Cómo has desarrollado tu técnica única?

102

| EXCLUSIVE LIFE MAGAZINE

A

few months ago, it was announced that KARL LAGERFELD’s legacy would be embodied in yet another creative domain, that of architecture and transforming spaces. The Karl Lagerfeld brand has teamed up with Sierra Blanca Estates, the Marbella developer, to make its first luxury residential project a reality. The unique aesthetic vision of the designer thus transcends the world of fashion to the creation of 5 luxury villas, in which every detail will reflect the holistic approach of the Kaiser of Fashion when interpreting the world around him. The location chosen for what will be KL’s first residential project is Marbella. Our city, specifically the Golden Mile, will gain an additional touch of glamour, thanks to these five exclusive villas that will be situated in an area of more than 9,000 m2 of land. Each of the properties will boast a plot of between 1,400 and 2,500 m2, and a living space ranging between 500 and 900 m2. One of the most experienced developers in Marbella’s property market, Sierra Blanca Estates, will be the firm in charge of posthumously concretising the designer’s dream of creating homes, while the creative direction will be carried out by the KARL LAGERFELD brand. The architectural design will be directed by the prestigious Italian architect, Andrea Boschetti, from The One Atelier, an international firm specialised in the real estate sector who collaborate with the most exclusive luxury brands. The knowledge Carlos Rodríguez (CEO of Sierra Blanca Estates) has of luxury residential matters is innate, thanks to the trajectory of the family company which he now directs, along with his father and its founder, Pedro Rodríguez, and his brother, Luis. This background is what has led a firm like KL to choose his company to execute a project which has such worldwide relevance that it has enabled the Marbella firm to further promote the image of our city as a favourite destination for high end residential tourism on an international level. Today we are talking to the entrepreneur in order to learn firsthand about this new project in Marbella: Why do you think the KL brand has chosen Marbella to develop its first residential project of this magnitude? For two fundamental reasons: the first, KARL LAGERFELD has found the perfect partner in Sierra Blanca Estates; a partner not only with experience in this type of branded luxury projects, but also with expertise in the Costa del Sol; a developer who knows their clients demands, basically because they are ours too, and who is absolutely determined to invest in real luxury at the highest international level. Secondly, everyone wants to be present and form part of what Marbella means today. Never has there been such a demand for homes, and this positive rate of sales greatly reinforces our destination as the epicentre of luxury residential tourism on an international scale. There has been a paradigm shift, and working remotely is now an option, so why not do it from a setting that offers such a wide variety of options as this? Marbella is no longer a seasonal destination; people want to live here all year round. And in my humble opinion, Marbella is the best residential destination in the world at the present time.

exclusivelife. | INTERVIEW

Sierra Blanca Estates has previous experience in residences designed by luxury brands after the agreement with Fendi Casa. Now comes KL Villas. What is it about Marbella that attracts such high quality residential developments? Are there plans to continue growing in this residential concept? The reality is quite different, given that the brands are coming to Marbella due to the unwavering commitment of our company, of our family having absolute faith that these collaborations with top-level brands would be a guaranteed success, but above all, it was my personal quest. It was a challenge that I set myself several years ago, observing how other cities were developing in the world, and I feel it is an enormous achievement to have managed to make it a reality, and that today there are already several highly prestigious international brands interested in carrying out projects with our company. In short, the reason why there are collaborations with fashion brands coming to Marbella is that we have brought them here. That said, it is obvious that Marbella’s numerous assets appeal to people who want to live in places that are favourable in different ways. Marbella has a recognised international reputation as a destination with an extraordinary climate all year round, and an unsurpassed quality of life within our country. We have practically everything, and it has already been demonstrated that we can improve and achieve what we do not have. This results in a unique lifestyle that many want to embrace: working from the garden of their homes; having a coastline to enjoy and go sailing; a medical and educational infrastructure for their families, adapted to the highest international standards; a close network of international connections, and the presence of the best brands in the world of luxury, all concentrated in a relatively small area. Marbella is no longer simply a place to visit; people want to relocate here, and that is an opportunity for this type of branded real estate and residential developments. We most certainly have plans, and we hope to announce a signed agreement with a third designer brand at the beginning of next month.

The only five villas in the world signed by KL is already a remarkable claim for this project, but what is it that really makes KARL LAGERFELD Villas Marbella special? ierra Blanca Tower I like to refer to them as five jewels, because of how exclusive this project is. A home of these characteristics in the heart of Marbella’s Golden Mile is something that is unlikely to be found again, it is quite unique. It must be understood that this project stems from the creative genius of an artist as versatile as Karl, who was the designer of such emblematic brands as Fendi or Chanel. He wanted to carry out a project like this, and the fact that it can now become a reality at the hands of Sierra Blanca implies a transfer of his talent to a concept of sustainable luxury housing. The attention to detail, the diligence in the development of the project and the meticulous execution of each house (as if it were a unique work of art) are what make this project totally unique. Tell us a little more about these houses. How many bedrooms and bathrooms will each of them have? Will the design depend on what the buyer wants? Each villa can be adapted according to the criteria and tastes of each buyer, always respecting the design and imprint of the designer’s legacy for this type of product. This is standard practice for our firm; we have high level clients, and our mission is to create the

106

exclusivelife. | INTERVIEW

house of their dreams. They will receive completely personalised attention, not only from the Sierra Blanca team, but also from the teams of Karl Lagerfeld and The One Atelier. Each of the five villas will be different, not only because of the architectural project itself, but also because of the extent to which the interior design allows each one to be adapted. The smallest villa will have 5-6 bedrooms and 5-7 bathrooms and toilets, and the largest, 8 bedrooms and 8-9 bathrooms and toilets. In each of the villas, there will be a multitude of details reflecting the essence of Karl Lagerfeld’s life, such as the famous bookcases or shelves where he would place his books horizontally. Regarding deadlines: when will the villas be available for sale, when will construction begin, and what is the predicted delivery date? The project has already generated a lot of interest among real estate agents, serious clients and some former buyers of Epic or other Sierra Blanca projects, therefore we could say that there is a waiting list. However, the villas will be officially put up for sale after the project presentation event in Marbella, in February / March 2022. This will mark the commencement of the construction work, which will last until 2023. The most important thing now is to promote the project and the product category it represents. This is something that we have been doing since last November, when it was presented at Maison KARL LAGERFELD along with the brand in Paris. Now, first of all, I want our potential buyers, and there are many interested parties, to understand why we have created something like this and what it implies. Only in this way can we later explain the economic rationale of the project.

The price of these villas has not yet been set. Will it depend on how much the buyer is willing to pay? What expectations do you have in terms of sales figures? These five jewels are the first residential project of this kind designed by the Karl Lagerfeld brand in the world. We would not like the price to be a signifier of what this project is, in the same way that the price does not set the value of a piece of jewellery or a work of art. The price of a Picasso could not be known before it was painted, and even afterwards, its price is not something that depends on one single factor. In this case, with such special homes, we want the value to be determined by the finishing touches of each villa, which, as I have mentioned previously, will be customised. How will you choose who will live in KL Villas and what target buyer do you expect? At Sierra Blanca Estates, we have always placed great emphasis on creating exceptional residential communities, which is a very attractive added purchase value for our buyers; knowing that their neighbours will be people they may admire, or with whom they can develop high level networking opportunities. This also forms part of the experience. If we refer specifically to the KARL LAGERFELD Villas Marbella project, we already have a list of clients who are very enthusiastic about it, world-leader entrepreneurs from different industries. We have even had one investor interested in buying the five villas, but we have not accepted the offer, because our aim is to create residential communities that are unique in the world. We will therefore try to select the best buyers, with the objective of them forming a group that will be as exclusive and unique as the five villas themselves. EXCLUSIVE LIFE MAGAZINE |

Peter Lindbergh (1944-2019) is considered one of the most influential photographers of the contemporary scene. His exhibition, Untold Stories, which can be visited in A Coruña, brings together more than 160 photographs, offering a new and surprising perspective on his work.

Born in 1944 in Lissa, German-occupied Poland, Peter Lindbergh worked as a window dresser for a department store until he moved to Berlin in the early 1960s and enrolled in the Academy of Fine Arts. However, he never quite fit into this environment. The artist himself recalled those years: “I preferred to devote myself to seeking out the sources of inspiration of Van Gogh, my idol, instead of painting the mandatory portraits and landscapes that were taught in art schools...”. Inspired by Van Gogh’s work, he spent almost a year in Arles before embarking on a hitch-hiking trip through Spain and North Africa. After moving to Düsseldorf in 1971, he began to turn his attention to photography, and worked for two years as an assistant to the photographer Hans Lux, before going on to open his own studio in 1973.

THE SUPPORT OF MARTA ORTEGA The exhibition is presented in collaboration with the Lindbergh Foundation, directed by Benjamin Lindbergh, the photographer’s son. The event has also been organised with the personal support of businesswoman Marta Ortega, friend of the photographer and a loyal admirer of his work. Ortega remarked that “Peter and Galicia share a lot of similarities... wild nature, natural beauty and that human warmth that makes you feel alive. It’s my great privilege to be able to bring them both together, and I do it with the sole purpose that Coruñenses, Galicians, Spaniards, and travellers from all over the world who visit this wonderful land will be able to freely enjoy this exquisite exhibition that Peter prepared down to the last detail before his untimely death. I hope, and firmly believe, that this will be the starting point for many people who, once they discover Peter’s world, will fall in love with his images and take an interest in learning more about him.”

REDEFINING THE STANDARDS OF BEAUTY Considered a pioneer of photography, he introduced a form of new realism by redefining the standards of beauty with timeless images. His humanist approach and his idealisation of women set him apart from the other photographers, as he always privileged the soul and the personality of the subject portrayed in his work. Lindbergh believed that there was something in each person that makes them interesting, regardless of their age, and thus he revolutionised the standards of fashion photography at a time of excessive retouching. “This should be the responsibility of photographers today: to free women, and finally everyone, from the terror of youth and perfection,” he said. He was the first photographer to include a narrative in his fashion series, which in turn opened the door to a new vision of art and fashion photography. Over the years, Lindbergh created images characterised by a minimalist approach to post-modernist photography that have marked the history of fashion photography. Models Linda Evangelista, Naomi Campbell and Cindy Crawford, young promises at the time, posed for him for what would become the legendary British Vogue January 1990 cover. Increasingly in demand, Lindbergh’s photographs for Vogue were the inspiration for pop star George Michael, the origin of the “supermodel” movement later continued by

Gianni Versace, to create the iconic music video for his song “Freedom 90”, which marked the beginning of an era of celebrity models that redefined the image of the modern woman. UNTOLD STORIES Peter Lindbergh: Untold Stories is the title of the iconic retrospective that Lindbergh himself curated shortly before his untimely death in 2019, and which can be visited for the first time in A Coruña, until 28 February 2022, with free admission. Lindbergh devoted two years to selecting the 161 images that make up a journey through the four decades of his prolific career, during which he immortalised some of the most famous women in the world of fashion and cinema; from Nicole Kidman to Uma Thurman, including many of the supermodels that marked the 1990s, such as Kate Moss. Peter Lindbergh is undoubtedly an artist who has left an indelible mark on both fashion and photography. With these images, taken between the early 80s and 2019, the exhibition allows us to get to know the work of the legendary photographer from new and unusual perspectives. An immersive and suggestive experience with some of his most iconic series, closing with the film installation, Testament, which opens a discussion about introspection, empathy and freedom. ■ EXCLUSIVE LIFE MAGAZINE |

Cupid, the god of love in Roman mythology, is the son of Venus, the goddess of beauty, and Mars, the god of war. Known as Eros in Greek mythology, he is depicted in art as a winged boy, armed with a bow and two arrows, a golden one with dove feathers, and the other of lead with owl feathers. The former grants love, and the latter, hate and indifference. The legend of Cupid is also the story of Psyche, a young princess. Venus, jealous of her beauty, sent her son to shoot her with his arrows and make her fall in love with the ugliest man in the world. But when Cupid went on his mission, he fell deeply in love with her and suddenly transformed into a handsome young man. Cupid married Psyche. As the couple were forbidden to see each other, they would meet at night, in total darkness, and take their leave when the sun rose. Hence Cupid is sometimes depicted with a blindfold over his eyes, as a symbol that love springs from the soul and has no regard for physical appearance. One night, Psyche was curious to know what Cupid looked like, and lit a candle. A drop of wax fell on Cupid’s face, who, disappointed, abandoned the princess. Psyche asked Venus for help, and the goddess gave her four tasks to prove herself worthy of his love. In the last one, Cupid saved Psyche from the danger of eternal sleep and the gods finally accepted their marriage. Valentine’s Day is celebrated on February 14th in most parts of the world. If you are planning to propose, there are some particularly beautiful cities where lovers flock every year to relive the story of Cupid and Psyche, and they are the best places to vow eternal love.

M

ariano Fuster i Fuster wanted to give his wife a house as a gift with the aim of pleasing her and adding beauty to the city of Barcelona. Hence he decided to buy the building located at number 132, Paseo de Gracia. In 1905, he obtained the necessary permits to demolish it and build a spectacular house. He entrusted the ambitious project to the Catalan architect, Lluís Domènech i Montaner. Mariano Fuster named the house after his wife and dedicated a rose window to her with the initials CF, which can still be seen on the façade on Calle Jesús. Once finished, it was considered the most expensive house in the city, due to the materials used in its construction, including marble of the highest quality. For all these reasons, it is said that Hotel Casa Fuster, defined as the designer hotel par excellence, is so much more than five-star accommodation. The Hoteles Center chain acquired the house in 2000 and refurbished it with the utmost respect for the building’s originality while, at the same time, enhancing the spectacular nature and singularity of such a fantastic piece of architecture. The hotel opened its doors in 2004. Casa Fuster is not only the masterpiece of Domènech i Montaner, but it is also the building that is the crowning closure to the Eixample district, symbolising Barcelona’s greatest period of prosperity and splendour during the past 100 years. EXCLUSIVITY AND LUXURY Lluís Domènech i Montaner, the internationally renowned modernist architect and author, among other works, of the famous “Palau de la Música Catalana” which was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, built Casa Fuster with three façades of great impact, due to their details and expressiveness. The works began in 1908 and three years later the Fuster-Fabra family moved in and inhabited the main floor. The façade of the house was the first to be made of white marble in Barcelona. Due to the elevated cost of its construction, the family left the house at the beginning of the 1920s. In 1962, the company ENHER bought the house with the intention of demolishing it and building a skyscraper. The people of Barcelona opposed it, and thanks to their protests the house was saved. They managed to get ENHER not only to not demolish the house, but to commit to the restoration of the building, which was carried out between 1962 and 1974. The last renovation took place in 1995. In 1999, Casa Fuster was put up for sale and a year later, it was bought by Hoteles Center, transforming it into the current Hotel Casa Fuster. ■ EXCLUSIVE LIFE MAGAZINE |

DEL PASADO AL PRESENTE

M

EICHHOLTZ MARBELLA IS SE E ING F ORTHC OMING!

Much like the evolution of fashion in recent years, interiors are increasingly becoming less about what’s trendy and more about personal expression. “Naturalness” will be the leading scheme. From using rich textures, natural colors and organic shapes from arches to curved furniture. Research shows that natural color schemes and organic forms like those found in nature reduce stress, lower blood pressure and heart rate, increase productivity and creativity, and make us happier.

Using neutral and subtle colors like beige, white, ivory, taupe, and grey opens up an array of possibilities for your home as you can also use other tones for accents. Bring on the textured fabrics! Velvets, sherpa, and boucles are the ‘it’ fabrics for 2022, cozy fabrics not only feel amazing but look chic and luxurious. We’ll also see fringe taking a front seat next year on furniture, especially sofas and ottomans. If the pandemic has taught us anything it’s this: We need a little more softness in our lives. This may explain the highly reported interior design trend of curvy furniture. The curved furniture trend took off this past year, reviving a timeless mid-century trend that dates back to the ‘60s and ‘70s, and we don’t see it going away anytime soon! Maybe we’re all just feeling a little fragile, but many of us are still not ready for sharp edges in our interiors. Femininity will have an impact on form in 2022, conveyed through rounded details ranging from circular structural elements to gentle curves. Living room bars and drink trolleys will be huge in 2022, to bring Your home enjoyment even more closer. This trend has got a clever use of space and real purpose to adults-only entertaining space. ■ Eichholtz Collection www.idhouseonline.com

■ Eichholtz Collection www.idhouseonline.com

arbella Design 2022 already has confirmed dates for its next edition: the event will reopen its doors at the Adolfo Suárez Palace of Fairs, Exhibitions and Congresses in Marbella, from November 3 to 13. As a novelty, it should be noted that the Marbella Design 2022 edition will feature an important curatorial exhibition of international contemporary art. Resounding success in the 2021 edition This announcement of the dates of the new edition of the exhibition comes shortly after the 2021 edition closes, which has had more than 16,000 visitors who have been able to enjoy, for the fourth consecutive year, 46 spaces designed by dozens of interior designers and more than 150 exclusive signatures. The jury, made up of Ana Barreales, Enric Pastor, Erico Navazo, Paloma Gómez Marín and Pepe Leal, has delivered five awards that have gone to the following professionals and categories:  Award for the best use and treatment of color, for the harmony of combining a risky color in an exercise of chromatic balance, has been for the Ferromagno space designed by José Lara. OUR FAVOURITE BOOK FOR THIS SEASON Don’t miss it! THE JOURNALIST VIRUCA YEBRA, BORN IN SARRIA, LUGO, DEVELOPED HER PROFESSIONAL CAREER AT THE ABC NEWSPAPER. IN 1986, SHE RELOCATED TO MARBELLA, WHERE SHE FOUNDED THE MARBELLA INTERNATIONAL CLUB, THE EUROPE HOUSE OF MALAGA, THE ASSOCIATION OF WOMEN ENTREPRENEURS AND THE CARITAS CHARITY CHRISTMAS BAZAAR. PHOTO: MARCO REYES

Between 2014 and 2016, she wrote her first novel “The Flamboyant Fire” published by Editorial Almuzara, a story of emigration from Galicia to Cuba. This year, Viruca Yebra, who continues living in Marbella, has once again surprised us with her second novel, La última condesa nazi (The Last Nazi Countess), published by Espasa. A long narrative of almost six hundred pages, set at the beginning of 1945, which relates the personal journey of Clotilde von Havel, a German aristocrat married to a commander of the Wehrmacht, who, unfortunately, is inexorably forced to abandon her castle due to the pressure of the Soviet troops, and condemned to poverty, exile and separation from her children. Such misfortune makes Clotilde become a survivor, determined to fight for her life, shed light on the past, and take advantage of strokes of luck. The novel follows her adventures from the devastated post-war Berlin to the glamorous New York and the transitioning London of the 1950s.

In the 1960s, with the help of her nephew Ralf, a former SS officer, the Countess settles in the Marbella of the golden age, and becomes involved in the daily life of those who, on the sidelines of Franco’s regime, found refuge on the Costa del Sol: artists, aristocrats, homosexuals... and camouflaged Nazis. A story of survival, great strength and magnetism that will captivate you from the first page of the book to the last. Viruca Yebra has captured the true essence of those years in the novel, when being bohemian and transgressive was not incompatible with acting with decorum. In her second novel, Viruca Yebra delves into the golden age of the city of Marbella, through the story of a German aristocrat. Without doubt, a fascinating read for lovers of historical novels, and for those nostalgic for the golden years... From Exclusive Life Magazine, we wish this worthy woman, Viruca Yebra, the greatest success. Unquestionably A WOMAN WITH CAPITAL LETTERS and with an impressive professional career under her belt, whom I greatly admire. Congratulations, Ana Pavón. ■

NUESTRO LIBRO FAVORITO PARA ESTA TEMPORADA ¡No te lo pierdas! LA PERIODISTA VIRUCA YEBRA (SARRIA, LUGO) DESARROLLÓ SU CARRERA PROFESIONAL EN EL DIARIO ABC. EN EL AÑO OCHENTA Y SEIS LLEGÓ A MARBELLA DONDE FUE FUNDADORA DEL CLUB INTERNACIONAL DE MARBELLA DE LA CASA DE EUROPA DE MÁLAGA DE LA ASOCIACIÓN DE MUJERES EMPRESARIAS Y DEL BAZAR DE NAVIDAD DE CÁRITAS. PHOTO: MARCO REYES

HOUSE OF GUCCI A FILM ABOUT AMBITION, GLAMOUR AND POWER THE AMERICAN FILM HOUSE OF GUCCI, DIRECTED BY RIDLEY SCOTT, HAS FILLED CINEMAS WITH GLAMOUR, AMBITION AND POWER. H

ouse of Gucci tells the story of the murder of Maurizio Gucci by hitmen hired by his ex-wife, Patrizia Reggiani; a key moment in the life of one of the most famous families in the fashion world. In 2006, Ridley Scott announced that he was going to make a film about the Gucci family. Initially, Angelina Jolie and Leonardo DiCaprio were to star as Patrizia Reggiani and Maurizio Gucci. The film was shelved and, after a series of vicissitudes, in November 2019, it was announced that Scott had taken up the project again, also becoming the film’s producer. With the announcement, it was also revealed that Lady Gaga would play the leading role in the film.

A MAGNIFICENT LADY GAGA In order to prepare for her role, Gaga studied Reggiani’s accent, mannerisms and personality by watching documentaries and interviews, as the production company had forbidden her to contact Patrizia, which greatly annoyed the Italian, who was expecting a call from the actress. The film cost 75 million dollars. One of the most highly-valued aspects of the film was the wardrobe, created by the British costume designer, Janty Yates. Yates spent six weeks, in the midst of the Covid-19 lockdown, delving into Gucci archives and preparing a wardrobe from the period between 1975 and 1995, when fashion was undergoing dramatic changes. Lady Gaga was closely involved in the characterisation process of her role, taking into account aspects such as accessories, make-up and hairstyling. Yates designed several outfits for each scene and the actress chose the one she wanted to wear. In all, Gaga wore more than 50 different looks out of the 300 outfits that were created for the film, without repeating a single accessory. The costume design began six months before the making of the film. AN IMPRESSIVE PREMIERE On February 24th 2021, Lady Gaga travelled to Rome to start filming. The outdoor scenes were shot in Florence, Lake Como and Milan, as well as in the Italian Alps in the Aosta Valley, which were used to recreate the resort of St. Moritz (Switzerland). The film premiered at the Odeon Luxe Leicester Square in London on November 9th 2021. It was then screened in Milan, New York and Los Angeles, and subsequently in cinemas around the world, grossing more than $110 million at the box office. Some 31% of those who went to see the film were over the age of 45, and 40% of the audience admitted that they went to the cinema to see Lady Gaga’s performance. Her performance was unanimously praised. USA Today wrote “The power of Gaga is undeniable as she rules House of Gucci with powerful panache and addictive swagger”, while The Guardian called the performance “glorious, elegant, impish, and of a very high standard”. REACTIONS OF THE FAMILY As for Reggiani’s response, she acknowledged in an interview that she was “disappointed” that Gaga had not consulted her in preparation for the role. For her part, Patrizia Gucci, Maurizio’s second cousin, explained that the family was upset about the making of the film, which was, in their opinion, “A theft of our identity and privacy. There are boundaries that simply cannot be crossed”. Following the film’s release, the Gucci family, who have not been related to the firm since Investcorp bought it, argued that “the narrative of the film is anything but accurate”, while criticising the portrayal of a chauvinistic family. The film’s release boosted the sales of Gucci merchandise by 270%, and Google searches for the brand increased dramatically in countries such as the UK, Denmark and Singapore.

L

My ideal romantic getaway would begin by waking up in one of the spectacular suites of the Hotel Cheval Blanc. Located in the heart of the City of Light, facing the River Seine and just a few steps away from the Louvre, Notre-Dame, Beaubourg, the Marais, Place Dauphine and Saint-Germain-des-Prés, it opened its doors in 2021. Designed by Edouard François and Peter Marino, a historic building with a contemporary spirit. We love it!

Start the morning with a leisurely Parisian breakfast on the terrace of your suite overlooking the Pont Neuf, and continue with a visit to the Dior Spa Cheval Blanc, which offers a selection of exclusive rituals specially developed by Dior for the Cheval Blanc Paris. Priceless! Just go for a wander around - there’s so much to see and admire... I love going to Place des Vosges, one of the most beautiful squares in the Marais. Immerse yourself in the Musée D’Orsay, guided by the best art historians; a private tour that you’ll take great delight in! There are so many famous works: The Card Players by Paul Cézanne, Bal du Moulin de la Galette by Renoir, The Luncheon on the Grass by Manet... Going shopping is a must when you visit Paris. I love going to the boutiques of Inès de la Fressange, or Martin Grant. If you’re looking for something extra special, go and take a look at Lorenz Bäumer’s creations. Nobody works with precious stones like he does, and remember to make a private appointment before your visit. In the evening, if you like opera, the Palais Garnier is the place to go. On February 12th, there’s a beautiful performance of Le Nozze di Figaro. In gastronomic terms, Paris is a paradise for food lovers; you can have a great meal wherever you go. From the classic bistros, such as Allard, Chez L’A mi Louis, Au Bistro, to more sophisticated restaurants that we like and recommend: Apicius, Monsieur Bleu, Loulou, Les Ombres, Le Grand Véfour... If you want to surprise someone during the Valentine weekend, Paris is the perfect getaway - romantic, fun and interesting. Flights are operating as normal, and you can enter with a COVID Pass, or PCR carried out no more than 24 hours before departure. You will be asked for the “pass sanitaire” in order to access restaurants, bars, monuments or concerts. ■

orn in Rome in 1934, Sofia had a very difficult childhood. Her father, the architect Riccardo Scicolone, never wanted to marry her mother, Romilda Villani, the concert pianist and actress. When the couple’s second daughter, Anna Maria, was born, Riccardo left them for another woman, forcing Romilda to return to Pozzuoli, in the Bay of Naples, with her family. The actress recalls that the early years of her life, coinciding with the Second World War, were spent in a room shared with eight other people. Her classmates called Sofia “Toothpick” because of her sickly appearance. But by the age of 14 she had begun to grow into a beautiful woman. At the same age, she won second prize in a beauty contest, and a year later she was a candidate for Miss Rome. Carlo Ponti, a 37-year-old film producer, was one of the judges and was smitten by her beauty. A SUCCESSFUL CAREER Sophia Loren’s acting career began playing an extra in the film Quo Vadis, while at the same time she was modelling for Italian publications. Her first Hollywood role would come in 1957, in The Pride and the Passion, co-starring Frank Sinatra and Cari Grant. After shooting the film, Sophia Loren found herself in a love triangle, as both Cari Grant and Carlo Ponti were deeply in love with her. In the end, the actress chose Ponti, who, as the media of the time joked, “was twice her age and half her height”. Carlo Ponti and Sophia Loren married in 1957, but the marriage was declared null and void due to complications related to the annulment of Ponti’s first marriage. Ten years later, they married a second time and remained together until the producer’s death in 2007. They were the protagonists of one of Hollywood’s most stable and enduring love stories.

In 1960, Loren starred in the autobiographical Italian film Two Women, for which she won an Oscar and became one of the most acclaimed actresses of the time. During this period, Loren appeared in American, French and Italian films, such as Vittorio de Sica’s Marriage Italian Style and A Special Day, with Marcello Mastroianni. Historical characters, such as the role she played in El Cid and The Fall of the Roman Empire, won her unanimous acclaim from critics and audiences alike. ON THE SIDELINES OF THE BIG SCREEN Regarding her private life, Sophia Loren had two sons, Carlo and Edoardo, who were the reason she stepped back from the cinema some years later, when they were in their teens. “My children need me at the moment,” she said, when asked by the press. At this time, the actress embarked on other business ventures, such as creating her own perfume and eyewear line, and publishing a book, Women and Beauty, in which she confessed that her looks had almost destroyed her acting career. Having received an honorary Oscar for her career, her later films, such as Prêt-à-Porter, Grumpier Old Men and Nine, continued to be successful. More than 100 films and numerous awards after launching her career in Hollywood, she still graces some red carpets, elegantly dressed and perfectly made-up, in high heels, and as flirtatious as ever. Those who know her best say she is still very humble and has never forgotten her roots or her tough childhood, which is why she cherishes every moment. “I always wake up early and go out for an hour’s walk. And while I’m walking in the park, I think “Maybe around the corner I’ll find something beautiful.” Positive thinking is part of who I am. It’s very rare that you find me sad or melancholic,” said Sophia Loren in a recent interview. ■

Sofía Loren LA ACTRIZ QUE NUNCA OLVIDÓ SUS RAÍCES

S

■ EXCLUSIVE LIFE MAGAZINE |
