I begin this editorial with these famous quotes, because I want to highlight the merit of a self-made woman, Rihanna. An incredible lady, multitalented and chameleon-like, the one and only, Rihanna. A strikingly beautiful woman and successful entrepreneur, who has stood out for her huge potential in the professional field and in all her different projects. The success she has achieved is down to hard work, effort and a great deal of dedication... inger, songwriter, model, actress, dancer, businesswoman, fashion designer and music producer. For an artist like Rihanna, any term is an understatement. Under the titles of “Queen of Fashion” and “Princess of R & B” hides an artist with the superpower of reinventing herself, which has taken her from music to the cosmetic industry, and from there to the business world, turning any product she touches into gold. Robyn Rihanna Fenti was born in Barbados on February 20th, 1988. Daughter of accountant, Monica Braithwaite, and warehouse manager, Ronald Fenty, she grew up in the city of Bridgetown, selling clothes with her father in a street stall. Rihanna did not have a happy childhood. Marked by her father’s alcoholism and crack addiction, she used to mediate in the constant family fights, which caused her severe tension headaches that forced her to undergo countless medical tests. When her parents separated, her personal situation stabilised. In 2004, Rihanna won not only the Miss Combermere high-school beauty pageant, but also the talent show, proving that she was much more than just a pretty face. That same year she managed to get an audition for the group she had formed with two friends with American record producer, Evan Rogers, who was on vacation in Barbados. ONE OF THE MOST INFLUENTIAL ARTISTS Rogers was captivated by her performance, and arranged a second audition with her, this time with her mother present and without her friends. When she finished singing, it was clear to him that he was in the presence of an impressive voice. He invited her to record a demo in New York, which marked the beginning of a budding career which would be full of successes. After the release of eight albums, Rihanna holds the record of more than 50 million musical productions distributed worldwide, 200 million digital downloads and more than 100 million copies sold. Apart from nearly 200 awards received throughout her career, including nine Grammy Awards, Rihanna has become one of the best-selling artists of all time, and probably the most influential and successful of the 21st century. Yet after the release of her latest album in 2016, Rihanna opted to distance herself from the music industry and focus on business. The artist launched Fenty Beauty in 2017, with the French group LVMH. The goal was to manufacture inclusive makeup products, with 40 shades of foundation for all skin tones. Following its success, the range has been extended to skincare, with Fenty Skin, and fragrances, with Fenty Eau de Parfum. Furthermore, in 2019, Rihanna launched Fenty, a ready-to-wear fashion and accessories brand.■

HER VAST FORTUNE All her lines of business have achieved astronomical sales figures, to the point that they have positioned Rihanna in the Forbes billionaires list, with a net worth of 1.7 billion dollars. According to the prestigious magazine, the businesswoman is the wealthiest female musician in the world, and second only to Oprah Winfrey as the richest woman in entertainment, The bulk of her fortune comes from her company Fenty Beauty, which has earned her 1.4 billion dollars. Another 270 million are attributed to her fashion line, and the rest to her music career, which she may soon recover, because Rihanna has recently commented that she is working on what would be her ninth album. But, in addition, Rihanna has celebrated the release of a new lingerie collection in the third Savage X Fenty fashion show (extravagant and inclusive underwear, which exclaims that anyone can be sexy, regardless of their size, skin colour or imperfections), with which she has dealt the last blow to Victoria’s Secret with her sensuous fashion show. The essence of the Savage X Fenty fashion show is the same that has made the brand a success and Rihanna a multimillionaire. As for her love life, the artist has always tried to protect her privacy, although she has not been able to avoid aspects of her private life being published. When asked about it, the artist and businesswoman prefers to comment with a smile that she is focused on her business. On occasion, the singer has stated that she would like to be a mother, with or without a partner, and for some months now she has been in a relationship with rapper ASAP Rocky, a fact which he himself confirmed last May. “She’s the love of my life”, he said at the time.

hinking about a destination wedding? Then consider having your ceremony in Marbella, a meaningful location for the happy couple and that would doubtlessly be special for family and guests. Incredible beaches, a picturesque mountain backdrop, historical architecture and panoramic views provide the perfect setting to say “I do”. Marbella, in southern Spain, boasts stunning scenery. As this destination has become so popular, there is a wide range of venues to choose from; country estates, including luxurious options, such as Anantara Villa Padierna Palace Resort, where you will see your fairy-tale wedding turned into a reality, with a memorable celebration in an elegant, classic setting. “While there were challenges in planning the event, we were excited knowing that we were bringing our dearest friends and family to one of our favourite places, for what we hoped would be an experience none of us would ever forget.” says Nol. “With the help of wedding-planner, Carla, from Tucco Weddings, we created a dreamy, meaningful event which will remain in our memories forever.” The décor for the event was inspired by the wedding venue. “We focused on incorporating natural colours, “Something subtle and unexpected can make a huge impact.” says Halyna. Exquisitely decorated by the team from “Unique by Roberto Silvosa”, the beautiful floral arrangements created a bespoke, romantic atmosphere.

Halyna had her daughter Michelle, who she calls her ‘angel’, as a flower girl, wearing a mini floral crown featuring the colour palette of the day. The bride opted for an ”insanely comfortable” Berta Privée dress, which she spotted at the Bridal Fashion Week. Halyna paired her statement gown with Jimmy Choo crystal pumps. The bride and groom worked closely with Daniela from Papelosophie to design wedding stationary that would reflect and represent their personalities. The reception took place in the Roman amphitheatre area and gardens of Villa Padierna. During the cocktail hour, the guests enjoyed a spectacular performance by a special entertainment company called NuArt: puppeteers on stilt guided live marionettes to serve champagne to the guests; emotional catering during the welcome apéritif, in the form of canapés served in a violin-shaped tray, or in ornate white cages, carried by ladies dressed all in pink. A unique Andalusian masterpiece, which could be seen being created by an artist using a violinist’s long white dress as a canvas, served as a keepsake for the married couple. An amazing itinerant choreography during the meal, performed by ladies from NuArt in extravagant costumes with roses and carrying mirrors, was designed to highlight the importance of the little things in people’s lives. to the cutting of the cake, which was created by Natalia from La Vi a Sucre. Having a kid-friendly wedding was a joint decision of the bride and groom. The little ones were supervised by childcare, with tabletop activities and all kinds of fun entertainment. Following the ceremony, the newlyweds hopped in a special getaway car, a 1954 Austin-Healey, to go for a ride before the banquet. The tables were accented with transparent gold-rimmed charger plates and goblets, accompanied by tall taper candles, along with an elegant combination of high and low flower centerpieces. The couple chose to request “Donations in lieu of wedding gifts.” “Making a difference in the world by giving back to the community. Nothing could bring more joy than seeing children happy.” said the newlyweds. The bride and groom decided to donate to two charities: “Aldeas Infantiles SOS Espana”, and “Prinses Máxima Centrum” in the Netherlands. The guests, who travelled from different countries to Marbella, witnessed the celebration of a bond that will remain in our memory for a long time.” Last but not least: ’’Whether you choose a beach or a mountain-top as your wedding destination, you need the right photographer to capture those dreamy memories. It’s essential first and foremost to have a connection with your photographer, who will be present in such an intimate and unique moment of your life.’’

exclusivelife. | GASTRONOMY El Patio restaurant is the latest addition to the Marbella Club and the final piece of its newly unveiled Clubhouse – a vibrant social hub that pays homage to the resort’s spontaneous beginnings in the Fifties. Set to become the atmospheric beating heart of the resort, El Patio promises guests a much-desired, laidback rendezvous in its verdant courtyard, celebrating that quintessential holiday feeling of taking a culinary journey through the Mediterranean. Hidden amongst blooming agapanthus, fragrant jasmine and draping vines, El Patio embodies the inimitable welcoming spirit from which the Marbella Club was born. Taking up residence in some of the hotel’s very first motel-style guest rooms from the 1950’s, El Patio is a space buzzing with locals and guests alike that embraces traditional Andalusian indoor-outdoor living. Its central courtyard offers a zestful oasis for rich coffees and delicate smoothies, leisurely lunches and lip-smacking Tardeo cocktails, whilst at night it comes alive under hundreds of twinkling lights. A bustling outdoor kitchen and under-the-stars live music performances make it the perfect space for catching up with friends over a sharing dinner or tempting tipple. El Patio is overseen by Calabrian-born head chef Armando Codispoti. Working alongside former Ottolenghi and Soho House Istanbul chef, Esra Muslu, an offering full of vigour and honesty has been born. Borrowing as much inspiration from Codispoti’s Italian mama’s homemade dishes as from Muslu’s Turkish roots, hearty dishes are packed full of herbs, spices and citrus from the Mediterranean Rivieras and Barbary coastal regions. Seasonal Andalusian produce is sourced from trusted local suppliers, supporting small business dedicated to making first-class ingredients. El Patio gives guests a chance to eat in many different ways. A bountiful breakfast affair includes everything from toasted granola with poached peaches to a twist on the smashed avocado with organic poached eggs and Aleppo chilli, whilst lunch brings watermelon with lime and chilli jam, seasonal salads and hand-tossed pizzas with names like ‘El Boss’ or ‘La Simo’, made in the lion-shaped fire oven. Later in the day, guests can indulge in the Tardeo, a chance to stretch out the afternoon with friends over a sage-infused cocktail pitcher; and finally, the action culminates during dinner with inventive dishes chargrilled by the chef in the open outdoor kitchen, decorated with hanging antique copper pots, Andalusian tiles and dried herbs. Dinner staples include wild sea bass carpaccio, wood roasted whole organic chicken with hay-flamed caramelised onions, and – for the cherry on top - Burnt Basque cheesecake. For an added dose of atmosphere, head-bopping tunes curated by Emma Schenkman revive the sounds of Mediterranean funk, boogie and soul in the most welcoming, sophisticated way. Marc Álvarez, fresh from a six-year stint with the Adrià brothers and the El Barri restaurant group, has dreamt up a bespoke drinks menu inspired by the hotel’s history and setting. Creative and stirring concoctions supervised by resort mixologist Nelson Gallo incorporate citrusy herbs, seasonal fruit and home-made cordials: must-haves include ‘Vertical Garden’, with whisky rye, lime and orange curaçao in made-to-measure glassware; and ‘Zoco’ – an attention-grabbing mix of rum, ras el hanout, mango, orange and lime. Whimsical and location-inspired interiors designed by Marie-Caroline Willms and Johanna Haniel of Spain-based design studio, EMCI, play on California’s retro diner vibe – a source of much inspiration for founder, Prince Alfonso. The space encompasses two indoor areas: a circular bar as a nod to Seville’s Plaza de España; and a conservatory-style salon featuring a botanical-infused design, with fabrics in shades of russet, indigo, saffron and sage, alongside raffia-upholstered walls and natural greenery. Unique touches celebrate the Marbella Club’s storied background: a locally handcrafted fireplace by Seville-based artisans, Exvotos, adorned with merman sculptures, mythical creatures and murals of an enigmatic pine forest pay tribute to the original finca on which the hotel stands; Marbella ceramics specialists Edmond and Inés bring the beauty of the gardens indoors with larger-than-life handcut and painted murals; and framed images of the Marbella Club’s beloved personalities takes guests through decades of dress-up parties, Beach Club revelry and late night flamenco feasts. Launched this spring, the Clubhouse epitomises the best things in life – food, drink, fun, friendship and family – and is a fitting tribute to the hotel’s original Clubhouse that acted as a purposefully low-key hangout for Prince Alfonso and his illus-

trious friends over 65 years ago. A series of convivial, free-flowing indoor and outdoor spaces, all flanked around a lush central patio, guests will also uncover The Grill, where ‘Gaucho’ Roque Juarez Junior brings to life time-tested recipes; Rudi’s, a decadent winter den for champagne toasts, tapas and rounds of backgammon; Summer Bar for al fresco cocktails; La Bodega, an expansive wine cellar and scene of wine tastings; and an exquisitely designed private dining space. The Garden Pool will re-open this summer with an entirely new menu envisioned by Marbella Club’s resident wellness chef Andrés Ruiz. With a focus on garden-based fare, seasonal produce and local harvests, the new offering follows in the successful footsteps of Chef Andres’ recently-introduced healthy gastro experience, El Olivar. Sitting close by is a new tomato garden with over 60 different ancestral varieties, surrounded by flowers and herbs to be incorporated into the dishes, with an ongoing calendar of events like gazpacho making or tomato tastings spearheaded by gastronomic designer Véronique Gladstone. A new hair spa, beauty salon and barber ensure guests always feel their best, whilst a unique proposition store and several flexible spaces act as the site of art exhibitions and pop-up collaborations throughout the year. This summer, the Clubhouse will display an exclusive exhibition of photographer Stuart Cantor’s ‘Marbella Club Days’ series – a collection of 18 images that capture the relaxed glamour and magical spirit of the hotel; a showcase of the Marbella Club Days father-and-son swim short in collaboration with swimwear brand Orlebar Brown; and an ephemeral 220 sq. m. boutique from legendary French maison, CHANEL, showcasing the Spring/Summer 2021 Ready-toWear and 2020/21 Métiers d’art “Le Château des Dames” collections, as well as the exclusive CHANEL COCO BEACH 2021 collection. ■

here are people who seem to have been born before their time. Professionals who have a unique vision, decades ahead of what is yet to come. This is the case of architect Frank Lloyd Wright, who, with his philosophy of connecting architecture and nature, created designs for homes and buildings that would set the way forward for later generations. Wright was born in Wisconsin (USA), in 1867, into a family of preachers of British descent. He spent much of his childhood and adolescence on a farm, in close contact with nature, which would later condition his approach to architecture. Although he began a degree in engineering at the University of Wisconsin, after two years, he decided to abandon his studies and move to Chicago to learn from the best architects, such as Louis Sullivan. During these years, he designed the Winslow House in River Forest (Illinois). It would be the first of the so-called “prairie houses’’, single-family homes with a strong connection to the environment. With roofs that created deep overhangs on the facades, and huge horizontal windows, the core of these homes was a huge fireplace, around which the rooms were distributed. Wright was ahead of his time because he rejected the concept of perceiving interior rooms as closed spaces detached from the others. He believed rooms should open up, envisioning an interior space that was large and open-plan, with ceilings of different heights, letting light flood in and creating a sense of spaciousness. INNOVATIVE CONSTRUCTIONS After travelling to Europe and presenting his work in Berlin, he returned to the U.S. and designed Taliesin, his own home. The architect was most prolific when it came to designing summer houses for wealthy families who wanted to see their homes surrounded by nature, at the lakes of Wisconsin and Michigan, and Northwoods, in Chicago. In his most monumental phase, Wright designed the Larkin Building in Buffalo, with a spectacular dark red brick facade, and Unity Temple, in Oak Park, using reinforced concrete for the first time. Foreshadowing the style that would become fashionable years later, the architect left the electrical wiring exposed, as an integral part of his design. Wright was also an innovator in the construction of the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo, Japan. He developed a new method of earthquake-resistant construction that involved placing the foundations on tilting hydraulic supports, which enabled the building to remain intact after the devastating earthquake of 1923. Hollyhock House, in Los Angeles, built using prefabricated cement blocks designed by the architect himself, or Millard House, for which he created an ornamental block with ethnic figures, were some of his strokes of genius. ■

AN INTENSE LIFE With Taliesin West, in Phoenix, he achieved total integration of the building in the landscape, while Fallingwater, in Pennsylvania, was built on a huge rock at the top of a waterfall over a small river, in a perception of organic and truly modern architecture, well ahead of its time. Wright’s life was intense in every way. He married three times, had eight children, and wrote books and countless articles, nowadays considered great architectural classics. He also created modern-looking furniture designs, such as the Coonley chair or the Barrel chair. And, most importantly, he designed almost 700 buildings in his 72 years of professional career; some of them very polemical for their time, such as the Guggenheim Museum in New York, which was inaugurated amid heated controversies due to its futuristic style. The architect died in 1959. Soon after came the shower of acknowledgements, and on July 7, 2019, UNESCO declared eight of his works a World Heritage Site, including the Guggenheim Museum in New York, and Fallingwater, which, due to its conception of architecture, would be considered the “building of the twentieth century” at the annual convention of architects of the AIA in Philadelphia.

DIGITAL WILLS T E X T: S A N T I A G O D E L A C R U Z
T
he LOPD (Act 3/2018 of 5 December on Personal Data Protection and Guarantee of Digital Rights) refers to and regulates the use of personal data and of the digital content of deceased persons. Article 3 of the LOPD says that «individuals related to the deceased by way of a family or de facto relationship and their heirs may address the data controller or data processor to request access to the personal data of the deceased and, where appropriate, to rectify or delete them». However, those persons “may not exercise those rights if the deceased person had expressly prohibited it, or if it is prohibited under any legal provision. Any such prohibition would not, however, prevent the heirs from having access to information on the assets of the deceased” These two quotes are sufficient so that we can, at least, begin to think about the legacy of our digital footprint, our website or our blogs, our social networks (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn or Instagram), our email accounts such as Gmail or Yahoo, our audio or video files stored on cloud hosting services (such as Dropbox), our relationships with providers of online music or audio file services (Spotify or Netflix …) our domains, our devices (PC with hard drives, mobile phones …). But while doing so, if we think a bit further, what about our access codes to our online bank accounts or our cryptocurrency balances? And at this point the LODP and Article 3 might awaken our interest. Suddenly the expression “digital will” starts to make sense to the extent that it could contain the right to access certain digital content of deceased persons managed by information society service providers, and also the right to rectification and deletion and the right that any heir has to be informed about the estate of the deceased and its condition, as well as to carry out any actions necessary in determining and defending it.

| EXCLUSIVE LIFE MAGAZINE
Article 96 of the LOPD regulates the right to a digital will. “1. Access to content managed by information society service providers regarding deceased persons will be governed by the following rules: a) Individuals related to the deceased by way of a family or de facto relationship and their heirs may address the information society service providers in order to have access to that content and give them any instructions they consider appropriate regarding their use, destination and deletion. As an exception, such persons may not have access to the content of the deceased, nor request any modification or elimination, if the deceased person had expressly prohibited it, or if it is prohibited under any legal provision. Any such prohibition would not, however prevent the heirs from having access to data regarding the assets of the deceased. b) The executor of the will and any individual or institution expressly designated by the deceased to act as such may also, following the instructions received, have access to the content in order to fulfil those instructions. c) If the deceased is a minor, those powers may also be exercised by his or her legal representatives or, within the scope of its competences, by the Public Prosecutor’s Office, who may act on its own initiative or at the request of any individual or body corporate with an interest. d) In the case of the death of a disabled person, in addition to the parties indicated in the previous point, those powers may also be exercised by persons who have been designated to perform supporting functions if the powers are understood as being comprised under the support functions provided by the person designated. 2. The persons authorised under the previous sub-section may decide on whether to keep or delete the personal profiles of deceased persons
on social networks or equivalent services, unless the deceased had made any decision on this circumstance, in which case, his or her instructions will apply. The controller of the service who, in accordance with the previous paragraph, is asked to delete the profile must do so without delay. 3. A Royal Decree will establish the requirements and conditions for accrediting the validity and effectiveness of mandates and instructions and, if the case, for having them registered, which could coincide with the provisions of Article 3 of this Act. 4. The provisions set out in this Article in relation to deceased persons in the autonomous regions having their own civil, regional or special legislation will be governed by the rules established by the regions within their scope of application.” The content of Articles 3 and 96 of the LOPD leads us to understand that a digital will is not a digital or online method for a person to dispose of his or her assets once they have died, because in our Civil Code a will has to be executed with certain formalities –normally in the presence of a notary- and for the time being it cannot be carried out digitally or online. We also know that the digital «content» we are referring to does not always consist of «transferrable» assets that can be inherited, and can therefore not be regulated under the scope of Inheritance Law as this only regulates assets and interests that can be inherited. With this, we should be aware that these LOPD regulations not only refer to the instructions that the deceased may have given with regard to the destination of his or her digital content, which would constitute a «digital will» itself (or a digital last will and testament), but they also indicate the list of people with legal standing –and not necessarily the heirs- who, as «interlocutors» could address the information society service

providers to inform them what is to be done with the digital content of the deceased. Having made these clarifications, a digital will could be understood as the document that could contain all the email accounts, websites, blogs, social networks, passwords, etc. In short, it is a document that can inform of, organise and arrange what is to happen with all the digital information of the testator. This digital will has to be formalised in the presence of a notary, the same as for a normal will – except in the special circumstances provided for in the Civil Code – and in it we will have to explain what to do with all that information and also to whom all those transferrable assets and interests
will be passed after our death, indicating the person or persons entrusted with carrying out those measures and the person or persons -heirs- who are the beneficiaries of our transferrable assets and interests. So, as part of the testament in which we express our last will, it would make sense to also draw up or file with the notary the information and the arrangements for our digital footprint and any transferrable assets and interests. Purely by way of illustration, we could organise, instruct and make arrangements for (1) our equipment (computers, telephones, tablets …); (2) our accounts and passwords (we would include those for banks, credits cards, cryptocurrencies, email
accounts, for example; (3) our social networks with personal content (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn or Instagram …), hard drives or storage in regular accounts such as Dropbox or Google Drive, for example, or in our own cloud; and (4) our website, domains, licences and possible subscriptions. With this information and our instructions and last will, our executor or, if the case, our heirs, would have our digital inventory and, depending on the case, can close, erase or conserve all or part of our digital footprint, as well as accept and distribute any “digital” assets and interests classified transferrable assets and interests in accordance with our wishes. In short, there’s nothing wrong in adapting our last will and testament to the times.

VILLA MERCURY A PRIVATE OASIS IN LOS NARANJOS, ONE OF NUEVA ANDALUCÍA’S MOST EXCLUSIVE AREAS
As modern villas have become more compact, they can’t always assure the same levels of space and privacy as before. Villa Mercury is different and certainly one of the most impressive villas on the coast– a luxurious contemporary home whose ample indoor and outdoor living areas set the tone for the quality of life within a personal oasis, all enjoying spectacular sea views. Working with a development team from Barcelona, he created a home that stands out in many ways from its peers in Marbella. This is evidenced by the avoidance of right angled rooflines in favour of a highly creative modern interpretation of vaulted and sloped ceilings, a feature first applied to such amazing effect by early masters of modern architecture such as Le Corbusier and

From the spacious, flowing living areas to the terraces and layout of the garden, to the large multicar garage this is a property built upon the vision and perfectionist drive of its creator. A man of the big picture as well as the detail that it is made up of, he focused upon the villa’s creative design before meticulously planning materials and details, and subsequently demanded the best of engineers and suppliers at each stage of construction and installation. It is for this reason that Villa Mercury ‘works’ so well, ‘fits’ so well and displays a harmony that is the function of careful consideration. There is an easy flow to the home the minute you follow stairs flanked by cascading terraced fountains up to the front door and enter a large central hallway – the main distribution point in the villa. Here the eye begins to take in details in a property that is nonetheless devoid of superfluous ornamentation but also far removed from rectangular interpretations of modern architecture. To the right, a large living room looks out over the back pool and its terrace deck, preceded by an informal lounge and connected to a comfortable dining room. THE ULTIMATE FAMILY HOME Thanks to its space, layout and amenities, Villa Mercury is a stylish and impressive residence that is also the ultimate family home – and a property just made for entertaining. Broad stairs lead down from the living room area to an expansive entertainment area that includes a lounge, dining room, restrooms, a bar and also a private cinema with its own bar, popcorn maker and state-of-the-art equipment. As the owner knows what he’s talking about when it comes to technology, expect acoustics and visuals to impress – accompanied by a side-view of the ‘green pool’. Indeed, the villa has two swimming pools and several water features, and this wing connects with a beautifully styled infinity edge pool whose water colours a mesmerising green thanks to specially sourced tiles. From here, you look out past fruit trees and flowering plants to a large tennis court in the blue of Flushing Meadows, beyond which extend the gardens and suburbs of Nueva Andalucía. Follow the lush greenery of the garden on either side around the house and you come to the opposite wing, which overlooks perfect lawns and a stylised fountain towards the main pool. The large family terrace connects with the modern kitchen, and on to the dining room and living spaces on the ground floor, which include a professional office and three bedroom suites. At the far end, steps lead down to the professionally equipped gym, complete with sauna, Turkish bath and showers/changing rooms. From here, a lift takes you down to the garage or up to the bedrooms on the first floor, crowned by the large, luxurious master suite with modern dressing room and bathroom. The views to the sea are impressive from here, and can also be admired from a large wrap-around terrace. They are even more imposing from the top-floor roof terrace, from where a panoramic 360-degree vista can be had that surveys the entire surroundings, taking in mountains, suburbs, golf courses, the sea and of course the private oasis of greenery below. MARBELLA DESIGN F OCU S O N T H E A RCH I T EC T URE OF T HE ANDALUS I AN VILLAGE
Ten days of Design and Interior Design in Marbella. The largest international exhibition of International Design and Interior Design held in Andalusia. An innovative space, with an exclusive project, in which more than 40 interior designers and design galleries, recognized nationally and internationally, come together to exhibit their latest avant-garde designs, collections and luxury furniture.
The Andalusian Village and its architecture, reconceptualized through the design of Alfonso Castellon, architectural director of MARBELLA DESIGN, will be the visual thread of this edition of the exhibition that, for the second consecutive year, will be held by Art Marbella from November 4 to 14 at the Palacio de Congresos of the city of Malaga. This main axis seeks to evoke an emblematic architecture that has stood the test of time and also links the exhibition with the region. The image of this edition is intended to be a continuity of that of theprevious edition, in which Castellón developed the idea of “The City of Artists” in reference to the Marbella of the “Belle Epoque”.

ARCHITECTURAL INNOVATIONS Although all the 18 villas in this luxury development are different from each other in detailed design, there is a visual unity throughout by the use of certain basic architectural features common to all the buildings. The most outstanding of these, and the most innovative, is the distinctive beams that wrap around the hallway of each villa. (See the image of the façade on the following page) The idea here was to optimize the views and integrate all the living spaces, inside and out. A floor-to-ceiling window, or window wall, in the main living space, sliding back into solid walls and leaving a seamless boundary between inside and out, may have seemed to be the obvious solution, but the same solid walls would have blocked light and views in other areas, thus passing the problem on. The architects solution was to design a glass wall in the hallway, encased in 12x14 centimetre beams, that the windows in the main living area slide behind, ensuring unrestricted views in the lounge while at the same time creating a light-filled hallway with unrestricted views of the sea, and a beautiful vertical design feature on the outside. Another innovative feature is the design of the infinity pools. Looking across these pools from the terrace, one sees the water

surface as being level with the main terrace floor on all sides. Most ordinary pools have the water surface 20 to 30 cms below the level of the terrace. This means that, to enter the water, one is forced to step down, whilst in Vista Lago pools you simply step into them. The pools are true infinity pools with nothing coming between the view of the pool and the deep blue of the sea beyond. Furthermore, the architects designed steps running into the pools for their entire length or width, depending on each individual villa design. DESIGN FORMULA TO MAXIMISE THE VIEWS The architects created a layout for the living area that would maximise the views – “lounge, terrace, pool, sea” – is a simplified version of the formula that was applied to every villa. This design allows one to fully appreciate everything the plot has to offer, whether standing in the kitchen, sitting at the dining table, relaxing on the sofa or sunbathing on the terrace. The view is ever-present. Every area of the lounge and terrace looks straight out to the sea. ENERGY CONSERVATION AND SUSTAINABILITY The other main area of innovation is in energy conservation and sustainability. This is less evident on sight alone, but can, nevertheless, be clearly seen in the use of natural materials throughout each Vista Lago villa. All villas will be BREEAM certified, which guarantees a high level of environmental performance and reduction of the impact of each building both during the construction stage and throughout its life cycle. Specifically, it means improved energy efficiency at all levels, including electricity saving through state-of-the-art heat recovery and intelligent control systems, a comprehensive photovoltaic installation, all LED lighting, increased thermal insulation thickness of the building envelope and an indoor ventilation system with both exhaust and intake heat recovery. Water will be saved by a variety of innovative measures, all aimed to avoid modification of the natural water cycle as much as possible. Treatment systems, including drip irrigation for grey water and rainwater, dual-flush toilets, pressurized tap systems, efficient water storage, soil moisture sensors to regulate irrigation cycles and many more measures are all part and parcel of a Vista Lago villa. As far as efficient lighting is concerned, it would probably be sufficient to know that at least 80 percent of the working area in every Vista Lago kitchen, living room, lounge and study benefits from direct sunlight. Light sensors are used in all outdoor lighting, and all indoor installations comply with the highest of official regulatory requirements. Of special visual interest is the solar lighting used in communal spaces throughout the development, illuminating the plants and stones on roundabouts and other areas to create a soft and intimate ambience, lowering its impact on the natural environment.

All villas will have an intelligent climate control system (and security system) capable of regulation by mobile phone, with water-based underfloor heating in all living spaces except the kitchen, which will have electric underfloor heating. Add to all this the innovations in sustainable materials used in all Vista Lago villas and in land use, protection and creation of natural habitat, strict pollution control with regard to waste and water run-off, and you have a subsequent increase in health and wellbeing in a safe and sustainable environment for now and for the foreseeable future. The villas could be described as “future-proof homes”. For more information on Vista Lago Residences, visit https:// vistalago.es. 5 tips to have a dream bathroom by Susana Urbano

The guest bathrooms or guest toilets are as important as the living room or dining room of your house since most of your guests will use them. Never forget to take maximum care of it. 1.- Study natural light and maximize it. 2.- Complement it with the light you need. In the bathrooms, it is very important to be able to create scenes. Sometimes you will need to have a lot of light for your clean-up or make-up. But other times you will just want to enjoy your Wellness oasis. 3.- Impact on your guest toilet. I believe that there is no better place in the whole house to create a scene than in the guest toilet. They are usually smaller in size than the other bathrooms and can be fulfilled with personality and drama. 4.- Treat your main bathroom as if it were the continuation of your bedroom or even living room, creating a space that you do not want to leave. 5.- Invest in quality. It is essential to surround yourself with good materials and sanitary objects in your bathrooms since they are areas subject to a lot of wear and tear. I hope these tips have been useful to you, if you need a little help, do not hesitate to contact us. In our study, we will be happy to help you. www.susanaurbanointeriors susana@urbanointeriors.com www.susanaurbanointeriors.com/online-shop/

HOLLYWOOD ROMANCES... OF YESTERDAY, TODAY AND FOREVER They are couples that have emerged in the heat of the Hollywood spotlights. Stories of romance and heartbreak, of encounters and separations, and what they all have in common is the intensity with which they are lived. A passion typical of those who have made us feel and moved us with fiction on the silver screen
ANGELINA JOLIE AND BRAD PITT Angelina and Brad met while filming Mr. & Mrs. Smith and the chemistry between them was instantaneous. It was the beginning of the relationship that would be nicknamed “Brangelina”, and which was forged with several biological and adopted children. They married in 2014, but separated two years later, breaking their fans’ hearts. BEN AFFLECK AND JENNIFER LOPEZ Seventeen years after starting a sentimental relationship that did not work out, Ben and Jennifer have reunited. What began as mutual support after their respective separations from Ana de Armas and Alex Rodriguez has become a second chance. The romance between the two, known as “Bennifer”, is back on the front pages of the tabloids.

BLAKE LIVELY AND RYAN REYNOLDS They are one of the most fun and stable couples in Hollywood. They married in 2012, after Blake broke up with Penn Badgley, and Ryan divorced Scarlett Johansson. After a period during which they were just good friends, they got married in secret after less than a year together, and today they have three children. ELIZABETH TAYLOR AND RICHARD BURTON The first time Elizabeth and Richard married, they became the most scandalous couple of the time. With their wedding, they legitimised an adulterous relationship that had been broadcast to the world in the magazines and daily newspapers, almost as it happened. After a tortuous love-hate relationship that lasted ten years, they separated, only to remarry a year later. In this second attempt, the marriage lasted only five months.

ELSA PATAKY AND CHRIS HEMSWORTH The love story between these two actors merits a Hollywood script. It began with a blind date in 2009, thanks to their drama coach, and although in the beginning Elsa had her doubts, Chris finally convinced her that he was the love of her life. They now have three children and live in Australia, and despite recent rumours of separation, they have denied them. FRANK SINATRA AND AVA GARDNER When they fell in love after being introduced at a party at producer Darryl F. Zanuk’s house, Frank was married. Despite this fact, he became totally enamoured of Ava, to the extent of writing her a daily love letter. After two years of courtship, they became husband and wife, but the marriage was a disaster. Both were hot-tempered and jealous, and the rows were never-ending. GRACE KELLY AND RAINIER OF MONACO Grace Kelly traded the world of Hollywood for the principality of Monaco. She was not in love when they got married, but she saw in Rainier an opportunity to start a family. They were united by their strong religious beliefs, but the Grimaldi palace became a golden cage in which Grace felt like an outsider. The marriage came to a tragic end, with the death of the actress in a car accident.
BRAD PITT AND JENNIFER ANISTON Brad and Jennifer began their relationship in 1998, and it became one of the most high-profile romances of the time. Their marriage came to an end in 2000, and both remarried; Jennifer to Justin Theroux, and Brad to Angelina Jolie. Their respective divorces have triggered rumours of them getting back together, but although they are close friends, for now, their reconciliation is more wishful thinking on behalf of their fans than a reality. KATHARINE HEPBURN AND SPENCER TRACY They met on the set of Woman of the Year, when they were both established Hollywood actors. They fell in love at first sight. He never left his wife, but the two began a high-profile love affair that lasted three decades. Despite Katharine Hepburn’s rebellious nature, she was so in love that she accepted he would not leave his wife, so they never lived together.

LAUREN BACALL AND HUMPHREY BOGART At the tender age of 20, Lauren Bacall married Humphrey Bogart, a 45-year-old divorced man she had met backstage two years earlier. Although no one would have bet a cent on their relationship, Lauren remained by his side until the actor’s death from cancer in 1957. RITA HAYWORTH AND ORSON WELLES Rita Hayworth and Orson Welles married in 1943, in an impulsive, almost clandestine fashion, to avoid the wrath of the Hollywood industry, which did not look favourably on their relationship. Reportedly, when Orson Welles saw a photograph of Rita Hayworth, he decided there and then that he would marry her, and he did not rest until he had conquered her. TOM CRUISE AND NICOLE KIDMAN Tom and Nicole became one of the most famous couples in Hollywood, and also one of the most enigmatic. They were married in a small chapel, with Dustin Hoffman as a witness, and during the 11 years of their marriage, they displayed their love on the red carpets around the world. However, Scientology got in their way, and after their divorce, the couple’s two adopted children chose to live with their father.

MANISH JAIN A MAN OF VISION
BORN IN JAIPUR, CITY OF KINGS AND GEMSTONES
FOUNDER OF KIROS JEWELS When it comes to jewellery, Mr. Manish Jain is a man of finesse and sublime vision. The founder of Kiros Jewels, established in 2006, had a dream to make jewellery a style statement for today’s empowered and independent woman. With more than twenty-five years of experience in jewellery, diamonds and gemstones, Manish is a reputable gemologist, consultant, jewellery manufacturer and wholesaler, with a network of numerous brands and hundreds of clients around the world. In 2014, Kiros Jewels, with bases in Spain, Hong Kong, India and France, launched a concept-based brand called Kiros Paris. The name Kiros literally means “The King”, which fittingly describes the brand that endows a sense of royalty, power and eminence to its wearer. “We manufacture jewellery for reputable jewellery brands in accordance with their particular requirements. Understanding the working style of the brands, our adroit jewellery designers start working on the theme of the jewellery. We design fine jewellery that expresses a dynamic feminine style.. We also have an exclusive collection of men’s jewellery.” CHAIRMAN OF JITO SPAIN JITO - Jain International Trade Organisation is a worldwide, yet strongly united, organisation of Jain businessmen, industrialists, knowledge workers and professionals that manifests the merit of ethical business practices. It is a global organisation set to achieve socio-economic empowerment, value-based education, community welfare, the practice of compassion, and the spread of global friendship and spiritual enlightenment.
In the future, GM also plans to set up manufacturing units in Spain in order to meet consumer needs. This locally manufactured configuration will facilitate exports of its quality products to different regions of Europe, North America and Latin America, improving exports based in Spain, as well as helping to create opportunities for employment, training, technological contributions and boosting the economy. In the words of Manish Jain, CEO of GMM Electric Europe SA “GM is placing a bet on Spain. Accredited with the mission of developing high-quality products in the most sustainable way, GM not only uses renewable raw materials to reduce the impact on our environment, but also empowers local communities, promoting initiatives in the form of local supply of materials.” GYROCOPTER SPAIN S.A. As a versatile and ambitious entrepreneur, perhaps his most exciting venture so far is the development of the first luxury three-seater ultralight aircraft, called DF3 “Diamond Fly 3”. On meeting the visionary engineer, Quique Sánchez, aeronautical and space designer, Manish decided to invest in this project along with other investors. A new gyrocopter that, for the first time, will accommodate 3 seats, and whose main market is in Spain, India, the United Arab Emirates, among others. The sale of 200 aircraft per year is expected and the first one is expected to be launched in two or three months. Quique Sánchez assures that the materials have been studied to achieve a competitive result in the market and make it attractive to buyers, in addition to taking into account the climatic component for which future improvements are being studied, although the initial model “could even be refuelled at a petrol station.”
CEO OF GM MODULAR GROUP IN EUROPE GM, a leading benchmark company in India and manufacturer of switches and household appliances, has arrived in Spain, bringing with it some of its revolutionary products, such as new generation switches, home automation, LED lighting, fans, Bluetooth devices, and much more, with the aim of offering the optimal design and comfort.
“We have developed a unique, luxurious and multipurpose Autogyro model, capable of offering emergency services, police surveillance, defence, agricultural maintenance, courier services, tourism and luxury transport. In association with the FIDAMC Foundation for research development and application of composite materials of the AIRBUS Group, we are guaranteeing: high quality manufacturing processes, optimal use of the latest technologies and of the best materials in the industry, and the most qualified human team.” says Manish Jain.
Founded in India in 2002, GM has more than 1,300 employees, and is present in Asia, Africa and the Middle East. It has its own distribution network of over 30,000 distributors, 55 exclusive showrooms, and 14 of its own showrooms in India. Now everything is set for the deployment of “GM Experience Centers” and distribution warehouses throughout Spain.

Nobu Matsuhisa is a great example of passion and perseverance. A story that teaches us the importance of learning from difficulties when it comes to achieving success. This takes me back to the moment we reopened our doors after lockdown (due to COVID19) last year. As mentioned previously, Nobu is all about paying attention to each detail, and this is what we did. We wanted to go the extra mile: we took all possible measures to ensure our guests continued to have fun whilst still staying safe, while collecting memorable moments inside and outside our hotel. We asked our guests to trust us, and so they did. Thanks to this trust from our guests and the commitment of the whole team, the reopening was possible. Expectations were exceeded.

Working for a brand and company that makes you feel welcome, a part of a family and feel at home (Irasshaimase!) is very important to me. It is for this reason why I love working at Nobu Marbella. From the forward thinking, dynamic team who are not only creative, but they do everything with passion. Whether guests are dining or staying with us you can not help but fall in love with the food, service, and energy of the brand.
What is one of your fondest memories working at Nobu Marbella? When the pandemic hit and the usual style of dining changed, we had to adapt. The hospitality industry was the hardest hit and for us not seeing the restaurant buzzing and full was devastating. We achieved success and were able to ensure our loyal customers could still enjoy Nobu cuisine at home, we launched Nobu To Go and also did a cook along series with celebrity Eugenia Osborn, Chef Eleni and the executive corporate chef Herve Courtot. It showed us that we could survive and thrive even in the most difficult of situations. Since then, we have gone on to partner with other likeminded luxury brands from fashion, charities, drinks and even beauty brands. Roku Gin, we created an exclusive pairing menu and every October host a Breast Cancer Awareness fashion show. apland is the home of the most famous Finn, Santa Claus himself; originally from Korvatunturi, a remote village in eastern Lapland, near the Russian border. Since 1985, he has received more than 17 million letters from all over the world. Santa Claus would not be able to do his job without his faithful reindeer. There are as many reindeer as there are people in Lapland, and any car journey can easily be interrupted by a herd of reindeer crossing the road. We propose an unforgettable holiday for this winter; staying in an exclusive, luxurious chalet that provides an incredible backdrop for your stay. This wonderful Finnish wooden chalet located on a hill is built with solid logs, and decorated with Finnish design furniture. Best of all is the chef, who will prepare dishes for you, based on very interesting local Lappish products. Each day will be packed full of fun experiences, such as going on husky safaris, sledding and, why not, making a snowman. A reindeer sleigh ride to see the Northern Lights, with a special Sami dinner, is an exciting evening activity, while snowmobile or reindeer safaris are delightful during the day. The highlight of your holiday will be a private visit with Santa Claus himself in a secret location, a secluded cabin in the forest. If you are looking for an exclusive and fascinating destination for the whole family this Christmas, Lapland is the place to go! ■

| EXCLUSIVE LIFE MAGAZINE
exclusivelife. | INTERVIEW

Además, no tienen límite.
In response to the negative impact that the health crisis has caused in the tourism sector, the Decree-Law 14/2021 of July 6 approved in the BOJA of July 12 pursues the economic revitalization of the sector by facilitating the modernization of establishments, the increase in category and the adaptation of its facilities to the requirements arising from the health crisis. The Decree-Law has 3 objectives: 1º.- To renew and modernize the tourist accommodation plant to improve its competitiveness. 2º.- Facilitate the adaptation to higher categories. 3º.- To support and encourage an essential sector for the economy of the Autonomous Community. As indicated in the explanatory memorandum, the objective scope of application of the measure are the tourist accommodation establishments legally built on urban land and that require extension or reform works for its renovation and modernization. So that in general, the rule allows to increase up to 15 percent of the buildability and occupancy in
the plots where there is a tourist establishment, and can reach 20 percent to encourage actions of requalification that allow establishments to adapt to higher categories. In the event that the increase in buildability implies an increase in the objective use of more than 10%, it will be necessary to modify the applicable urban planning instrument. In short, this new regulation of the Governing Council of the Junta de Andalucía can be an important aid for the improvement of the hotel plant in our Community. It is aimed at facilitating the Government’s objective of providing the hotel business sector with an instrument to help the renovation of the hotel plant and its requalification. It also helps hotels to raise their category in the classification of tourist establishments and their competitiveness by allowing more space for customers to enjoy or to increase the services offered to them. We hope that the local councils responsible for granting planning permission and, where appropriate, planning modifications will follow the same line established by the Junta de Andalucía and that this can be put into practice in an effective way in everyday life. It should also be noted that the projects that take advantage of these measures are subject, in any case, to planning permission and a report from the Ministry of Tourism.

uilt on a 6,000 m2 site, formerly occupied by the Palace of the Duke and Duchess of Medinaceli, it is located within the Art Triangle, home to the great writers of the Golden Age. For many, the most bohemian and chic neighbourhood in Madrid. The Belgian entrepreneur, Georges Marquet, developer and first owner of the hotel, awarded the project to the Monnoyer Studio and the architect Leon Eduard Ferrés i Puig, winner of the tender to adapt the project to the trapezoidal shape of the site. The first stone was laid on March 9, 1911, and construction was completed on September 20, 1912, setting new records for promptness. AN AVANT-GARDE HOTEL The site was acquired for 1.5 million pesetas, and the total investment amounted to 15 million pesetas. It opened with 800 rooms, and was the first hotel in Spain and the second in the world with a bathroom in each of its rooms. Plumbers were brought in from England, marking the birth of this profession in Madrid. Furthermore, it was the first hotel to install telephones in all its rooms, and the first building constructed using reinforced concrete, in the style of the Parisian buildings of the Belle Époque. In 1914, Madrid City Council granted the building an award for the best construction in the city, and in 1998, it was declared a Site of Cultural Interest in the Monument Category by the Community of Madrid.

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT THE WESTIN PALACE HOTEL • The first guest stayed in room 141, on September 21, 1912, and paid 7.5 pesetas, the equivalent of 5 euro cents today. • From the beginning of the century, it began to receive illustrious guests, such as Igor Strawinsky, Pablo Ruiz Picasso, Marie Curie, and the double agent Margaret Gertrude Zelle (Matahari). • After World War I came the Roaring 20’s, and with them, the famous early evening dances under the dome. • During the Spanish Civil War it became a military hospital, where the glass dome played a significant role, as the abundant natural light allowed surgical operations to be performed even when there was a lack of electricity. • In the 1940s, Salvador Dalí painted a sketch on the wall of his suite; it was a real shame that the chambermaid erased it. • The great economic boom of the 50’s brought great Hollywood artists, such as Hemingway, Orson Welles, Lauren Bacall, Rita Hayworth or Ava Gardner to stay at the hotel. • In the 1960s, it began to receive international clients, including the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, and the Italian magnate Giovanni Agnelli. • In 1972, one floor of the hotel became the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China. • In 2001, it hosted a summit with 40 Heads of State, where Bill Clinton and Mikhail Gorbachev met. • In 2004, on the occasion of the wedding of The Prince and Princess of Asturias, it was one of the hotels chosen to host illustrious guests from all over the world.

A MICROCOSM OF SPANISH LIFE From the outset, it was designed to become not only a hotel, but a hub of Madrid’s social life; a meeting place to get together, do business, or have parties and banquets. Josép Pla, renowned writer and journalist of the mid-twentieth century, defined the lobby of the Palace as “the microcosm of Spanish life”. Its most remarkable feature is the spectacular stained glass Art Nouveau dome in the lobby, the focal point of the hotel. Designed by Mauméjean, it is decorated with geometric motifs of floral and arabesque designs. Three Flemish tapestries from the 17th century decorate the so-called noble area, as well as a unique, solid bronze Art Deco lamp in the shape of a palm tree, which hung under the dome until 1997, and now presides over the entrance. ROOMS AND SUITES The hotel is currently fully restored and boasts 470 rooms, 50 of which are suites, all equipped with the signature “Westin Heavenly Bed”. Decorated and furnished in a classic, timeless style, they retain the original mahogany wood doors. The Royal Suite boasts balconies with breathtaking views. The interior design, by the London-based studio, Areen Hospitality, adds a touch of contemporary elegance.

INTERVIEW
JOAQUÍN TORRES A-CE RO ARC H I T E C T B Y A NA PAVÓN
How would you define, in one sentence, the project that is being presented today; The Secret? A “high-end” development, where personalisation, quality and commitment to excellence go hand in hand. How is Estudio A-Cero going to hallmark these 34 villas of 1,000 m2, so that any client can immediately identify your signature? Our architecture is easily distinguished by its formal strength... The sculptural value of our works is in our DNA. What would you highlight about the new development in Marbella, THE SECRET? Without any doubt, the CEO of the company that’s carrying out this project... He’s an intrepid developer, with a desire to do things right and not just to make money, which is fantastic. Tell us how the idea for this project came about, and how the liaison between Otero Group and your studio, A-Cero, was formed. Well, like everything in life, it was a matter of coincidences and non coincidences… Rubén and I have similar backgrounds; we both started out in Madrid, and we’ve both oriented our companies towards the luxury sector. Meeting each other came about due to a series of events that were inevitably drawing us together. In the Marbella area, Otero Group is the best option for acquiring a luxury property, and in this sense, we make the perfect match. What kind of client profile are you targeting? A client with high purchasing power, but also with an elevated level of sophistication; lovers of excellence, art and culture.

T H E SEC RE T - VI L L A SAI L BY JOAQU Í N TOR R E S
It’s my understanding that you’re going to be personally in charge of carrying out the project for the most exclusive villa in this complex. What can you tell us about it? Well, as with every project, my approach is to treat it as if it were for me. The magnificent plot of more than 5,000 m2 serves as a guide, and it’s the plot that determines everything; the views, the orientation, the topography… All these conditioning factors ultimately result in a villa that calls for the possession of its habitat. It’s an insane location, and the architecture must be adapted to integrate into the hillside. What services and communal areas will the complex have, and what will make this project unique in Marbella? It’s unique because of its golf, the sports and leisure club, the location, the security, the accesses, the orientation, the views... All of this and more make this complex a great opportunity to acquire the best homes on the Costa del Sol. What would you highlight about Casa Nido, one of the most im-

pressive villas in Marbella with the unmistakable Joaquin Torres hallmark? How was it conceived? Casa Nido is already over 10 years old, and it was a very interesting project for very special clients... All our houses in The Secret boast the same standards as Casa Nido. It’s common knowledge that it’s for sale for over 20 million euros. What I mean is that “The Secret” is not only a project of great houses, of homes, but also a fantastic investment opportunity. After all the projects you’ve carried out on the Costa del Sol, and now this new project with Otero Group, how would you outline the evolution in terms of architectural design (new demands of the current market in Marbella)? Marbella is undeniably a market with huge potential for luxury residential architecture, true luxury. There’s great demand for designer luxury housing. It’s senseless, from my point of view, to create designs nowadays with architectural styles from centuries ago. The target is the international market, and it’s a question of astuteness to know how to make the most of the enormous potential of the site by framing the business in the high-end luxury market.

Might we soon have an A-CERO architecture studio here in Marbella? Well, we carry out projects all over the world. We travel for the project, for the client, for the project management... But nowadays, our work can be done from anywhere. If it were for projects, we’d have offices in more than 30 countries in the world, and in every province of Spain. Anyway, in the case of the Costa del Sol, I don’t rule it out, because we have several projects apart from The Secret, and other important ones on the horizon, so it could be realistic to open an office, and even a showroom in Marbella, given the upscale profile of clients. Who are your role models in architecture? Right now, my main role model is Rafael Llamazares, my partner, my friend. At the present time, he’s the person who contributes the most to me, but without a doubt, the great masters of the modern movement will always be present in A-cero’s work. You’re often referred to as the architect of the celebrities, because you’ve designed houses for many famous people on the national and international scene. Has it been easy to deal with the celebrities’ egos? Dealing with egos is very difficult, but it’s even more difficult to deal
with one’s own ego. Taking this into account, it’s reasonable to have to deal with the ego, in this case, of a famous, rich and successful client... But this happens to me as a businessman in architecture, and it also happens in other fields of life. Do you consider your architecture functional? Good architecture is neither good nor architecture if it’s not functional. I consider myself to be a good professional and I’m proud of my work, at least of the vast majority of it. So yes, obviously, apart from the recognisable and renowned design of A-cero, our architecture is functional. Which materials do you prefer when it comes to building? Without a doubt, the best course of action is to use materials that age well and that are fitting to their surroundings. I’m a fan of concrete and natural materials, such as stone or wood... What do you consider your star project? Unquestionably, my children. It’s the one I dedicate the most time, effort and love to.

ENTREVISTA A
JOAQUÍN TORRES ARQ U I T E CTO A-C ERO P OR A NA PAVÓN

Robert Redford THE ETERNAL HEART-THROB IN SEARCH OF HIS DESTINY There are people who go out and encounter their destiny, and others whose destiny catches up with them when they least expect it, as in the case of Robert Redford, the eternal Hollywood heart-throb. In order to understand his story, we must go back to his birth in Santa Monica, in 1936. The son of Charles Robert, a milkman of Irish origin who later worked as an accountant in an oil company, and Martha, a housewife, Robert grew up in West Los Angeles, in a neighbourhood that moulded his rebellious character. hanks to his skills as a baseball player, he was able to attend the University of Colorado with a scholarship to study the arts, but after his first year he decided to drop out and travel around Europe. He lived in Florence and Paris before settling in Malaga, in a modest house by the sea. When the bohemian lifestyle lost its appeal, he thought he could make a living as a set designer, and enrolled at the Pratt Institute in New York. One of his professors insisted that he try his luck as an actor, and that is how he ended up enrolling at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. PROTECTIVE OF HIS PRIVATE LIFE After filming All the President’s Men with Dustin Hoffman came one of the greatest successes of his career: Out of Africa, with Meryl Streep. No one seemed to suspect that his relationship with his wife was not at its best. They separated in 1985, after 27 years of marriage, and he began a long-term relationship with the Brazilian actress, Sonia Braga. Redford, despite a long list of romances with beautiful women, such as designer Kathy O’Rear, model Nathalie Naud, or actress Debra Winger, was always very protective of his private life. Rather than going to Hollywood parties, Redford preferred to find peace in contact with nature, which earned him a reputation as an unsociable character. Despite this fact, the contracts kept flooding in, but Redford decided to turn his professional career around, and made his directorial debut with the film Ordinary People, which won him an Oscar. Other successes would follow, such as A River Runs Through It with Brad Pitt, and The Horse Whisperer. Committed to the film world, he created Sundance Institute, which became a production company committed to promoting independent artists. A lifetime dedicated to The Seventh Art earned him the National Medal of Arts, awarded by the president of the United States, in addition to receiving France’s prestigious Knight of the Legion of Honour. RECENT YEARS OF SERENITY After a relationship of almost 13 years, Robert Redford married the German painter, Sibylle Szaggars, who is twenty years his junior. They live in Santa Fe (New Mexico). And although Redford had announced his retirement from the world of cinema, in 2019 he made his last appearance participating in the film Avengers: Endgame. The death of his son James in 2020, after a battle with cancer, has marred the quiet life he leads with his wife. In his latest appearances, he has been looking remarkably older, with tousled hair and deep wrinkles furrowing his face. And yet his eyes are brighter than ever, which would suggest that Redford has finally managed to master the destiny that the cinema, his talent, and his imposing physique have marked throughout his life. ■

UNSTABLE TIMES The early death of his mother had sent him into a deep depression, which he tried to drown with drink. However, the woman who would become his first wife appeared in his life; Lola van Wagenen, who practised the Mormon religion and got him out of the downward spiral of destruction. After their wedding, they moved to a cabin in Utah, where they had four children: Shauna, Amy, James, and Scott, who died two months after his birth, plunging Redford into such profound sadness that it ultimately caused the couple to separate. Just when everything seemed to be falling apart, his professional life began to promise him a bright future. After the debut on Broadway of the comedy Barefoot in the Park, which was later adapted to the big screen with great success, the whole world took notice of the blonde heart-throb and began to idolise him. Then came the classic Hollywood films, such as The Candidate, The Way We Were and The Sting, in which he starred alongside Paul Newman. With this film, Redford received his first Oscar nomination.

But, despite this perilous message, the industry ended strong, with a global apparel market worth of $1.5 trillion (up from around $1.4 billion in 2019). The Fashion industry managed to bounce back with a boom with a shift in consumer interest towards all things Sustainable. All the major Brands pret a porter and Couture started adapting their branding and marketing campaigns to changing their manufacturing process to be more green, reducing their carbon footprint, recycling, upcyclying and repurposing. Most brands displayed grit, innovation, and a will to not only survive, but to adapt to the changes in society and have managed to thrive in doing so! Locally in our Marbella community in March 2021 we had the great pleasure in launching the new retail project at the Puente Romano Resort with the following international brands. PUENTE ROMANO RETAIL PROJECT Temperly: Designed by Alice Temperly from London, the brand encompasses etherial feminine designs, light and flowy with delicate embroidery and sequenced models evocative of the English countryside elegance. “The collection’s concepts are that each piece is imagined and realized as an event in itself, in turn a precious jewel, a glamourous epiphany, a catalyst element.” Alberta Ferreti Venice Biennale: I was delighted to be invited to attend the enchanting Alberta Ferreti Show in Venice during the Venice Biennale. “Italy’s quiet achiever,” as Alberta Ferretti was once called, Who exhibited her first show in 1981 she founded Aeffe, a fashion production and distribution concern, with her brother; its success helped establish the Made in Italy movement. Roaming through the streets of Venice as in a dream. Magic glass, transforming into fantastical shapes under the skillful mastery of glass blowers. The poetry of threads weaving into unique and precious textile stories. The gleaming water swirling into new motifs with every passing gondola. The winged Lion, keeping watch, under the starry night. With the most talented @albertaferretti Alberta Ferretti is the first fashion designer to receive the Women In Cinema Award by the President of @labiennale Alberto Barbera. “ She perfectly embodies the ideals of the Women in Cinema Award, emphasizing the importance of women, their creativity and talent in every collection and gown” For the creation of blown glass jewels, Alberta Ferretti has established a dialogue of craftsmanship and creativity with the artist #MassimilianoSchiavon who shaped iridescent and malleable glass in infinite ways, giving life to precious flames, sinuous tongues, foliages and Venetian beads.

PARIS FASHION WEEK: Prêt-à-porter Sept-Oct 2021 Marcos Villafruela shows his collection at Paris Fashion Week 2021. Last Friday, Maros was the only Spaniard selected along with some thirty young international talents to present his collection in a joint fashion show in the city of lights! Marcos is “in love” with the city, were he fulfilled one of his dreams to present his collection in the legendary Galerie Bourbon, in the Marceau salon, where he showed his new collection, ‘Kokoro’. His name is inspired by a Japanese novel that talks about the union of body, mind and spirit. A proposal in which “300% has been left in each of the pieces”, bathed in only two colors, indigo purple and pink, and made with subtle transparencies in natural silk organza and satin. Marcos Villafruela is a true ambassador of Spanish fashion, dedicated, professional, with an eye for the most refined and with contagious positive energy, he will undoubtedly succeed in his fast growing career, this presentation in Paris was a small step to the great success that he will have!
