UP NORTH Holiday on the Yorkshire Riviera Costa Caravania, Scarbados, BridVegas - call it what you like - a couple of years ago it was reported that more holiday makers visited the Yorkshire coast than any other part of the country outside of London. No flight delays, no costly currency exchange, just quintessentially British good honest fun at the seaside. At the heart of it all lies Scarborough, the UK’s first resort destination sitting at the base of its historical castle, climb the battlements, take in the view’s and enjoy the interactive exhibition before taking a walk down to the bustling seafront for a donkey ride on one of its sandy beaches. Sitting just behind the North Bay is Peasholm Park, an Oriental landscaped garden where you can take a variety of boats out on the lake - voted the 6th best park in the country. Head down the coast where Bridlington has all the fun of the fair, the kiss me quick attitude with the rides and arcades contrasting against a pre-roman harbour and the historic old town. The south beach has over a mile of clean, soft sand and it’s also home to Bridlington Spa, hosting some of the best dance, comedy and musical performances. To the North, Whitby is a jewel in the crown of Yorkshire. We all know about their award winning fish and chips and Dracula connections but crammed with independent, unusual shops the town is also a shoppers delight - particularly for those looking for something out of the ordinary.

From books and art to jewellery and clothing and the famous Whitby Jet favoured by Queen Victoria, these unique cobbled streets will have something to offer every taste. The smaller towns of Hornsea and Filey must not be overlooked if you’re in the area. Relaxing Hornsea is the ideal coastal hideaway, once known for its famous pottery, the Folk museum hosts the largest collection in the world. For active families, Bay water-sports in Filey offers kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding and raft building and the town itself often hosts art and food events as well as the popular Filey Folk Festival. If you’re after a much slower change of pace and a bit of rock pooling then there are picture-perfect fishing communities like Robin Hood’s Bay, Runswick Bay and Staithes where the Oakridge Nature Reserve and bird filled surrounding woodlands provide a relaxing contrast to the busy resort towns.

There’s certainly a lot of choice and if you want to take it all in, there are many coastal walks – the ultimate challenge for clean sea air and Yorkshire moorland is following the 109 mile, 7/10 day Cleveland Way, which follows the coast and heads inland. We are reminded that under the General Product Safety Regulations 2005, we have a duty to sell a “safe” product.

Key Points: If you sell or install blinds You have a responsibility to advise clients about child safety options at the time of survey and ensure the appropriate child safe blind is sold or the appropriate device is installed with the blind and functioning correctly. You should also check all existing blinds and if you consider them to pose a hazard, do something about it. If you do not do this, change your approach now.

If you buy blinds from a third party

They have a responsibility to advise you of the child safety options available for the various blind types they sell. If they do not advise you of the child safety options – change your supplier now.

If you manufacture blinds

You have the responsibility to review the various child safe blinds and child safety devices available. Determine which products you offer with the blinds you offer and, where required, supply the appropriate safety device and instructions. If you don’t do this currently, change this practice now.

If you design, manufacture or distribute systems

You have a responsibility to provide appropriate child safe blind systems and child safety devices in the form of component parts. Identify to your customers how and why each system you supply should be made and sold. If you don’t do this now, change systems or stop suppling now.

We Suggest: Why not join the BBSA or the BBSA 'Make it Safe' campaign and make sure you get the very latest information you need to keep your customers and your business safe? All BBSA members are automatically part of the 'Make it Safe' campaign, but the campaign is open to anyone who manufactures, sells or installs window blinds. Easy & Straightforward Guide: This latest Child Safety legislation may seem daunting, but the BBSA websites are full of easy informative information guides to help you with any uncertainties. We have also created a Trade Order Form which has mandatory fields that must be completed to ensure that we supply you with the correct Child Safe Devices and Information.

CHILD SAFETY Curious, growing minds are a joy to watch develop, exploring, crawling and climbing. Before you know it, they are up on the windowsill looking for the perfect view of the outside world. Most accidental deaths involving blind cords occur in children aged between 16 and 36 months - mobile toddlers who haven’t yet fully developed the muscular control. With underdeveloped windpipes, if the neck is restricted toddlers can be strangled quickly and quietly by looped cords and this has even happened with carers in close proximity, unaware of the entanglement. It’s not a very pleasant thought and it is the reason why its at the forefront of our manufacturing process, so much so that we implemented child safety 3 years before the ruling to make it a legal requirement. Put simply, where there is a loop that is present, or could be created, a safety device must be installed at the point of the manufacture. These safety devices either break under pressure, tension the cord or chain or provide the facility to store cord out of reach. There is also a maximum chain and cord length imposed and we will not manufacture anything that falls outside of these conditions. Thankfully there are also a range of cordless options available starting as simple as

a mono command wand on vertical and panel blinds or a crank handle for rollers. The sophisticated Senses slow rise system for roller blinds is a smooth spring operated touch mechanism that mimics motorisation and anything motorised is of course cord free. With a vast array of fabrics in our sample books, our attention to detail and using the best quality components, we are confident that we offer an exceptionally high standard of finish on all your soft furnishing products .

At Excel our roman blinds are all made to measure and bespoke to you, the customer. As standard, we manufacture using the new method of stab stitching giving a much more smooth/flat finish, however for customers who prefer the traditional full stitch line running through we will always accommodate providing this has been requested when ordering. Pelmets are also left to personal preference so please indicate your desires as you order and we’ll be happy to complete your items to your exact specifications. We also carry a choice of linings sourced from excellent suppliers to give that little extra quality to our blinds and we price linings as a flat rate and not by an added percentage to the blind. With safety being paramount, all our deluxe headrails are fitted with a breakaway control unit, along with click and lock cord drums for easy movability. We use an extra weighted bottom bar of 80grams per metre to keep the blinds taught. The reverse of these blinds are sewn with tapes and an aluminium rod running through to give more stability to the finish, complete with all the safety clips. Offering all styles of curtain finishes including eyelets whether they be metal or plastic, pinch pleat and the standard pencil pleat, we also aim to make life simple by supplying any poles, tracks or tie backs you need for a complete job, we also offer cushions, piped or un-piped at any size.
