PALAZZO SERBELLONI: Un cuore antico si veste di nuovo Palazzo Serbelloni si erge, nobile ed elegante, in Corso Venezia, nel cuore di Milano. Le sue mura, le sale di rappresentanza squisitamente affrescate e il giardino, hanno vissuto parte della storia della città sin dal 1775, anno della sua progettazione ideata e voluta dall’architetto ticinese Simone Cantoni.

PALAZZO SERBELLONI: An ancient spirit with a new look Noble and elegant, Palazzo Serbelloni stands in Corso Venezia, in the heart of Milan. Its walls, its finely frescoed reception halls and its garden have lived through part of the history of this city since 1775, the year in which it was lovingly conceived and designed by Simone Cantoni, a Swiss architect from Canton Ticino.

“Presidente, prima di tutto, da dove inizia la storia dei Serbelloni?”

“La famiglia Serbelloni, già iscritta alla nobiltà lombarda con il titolo di conti e dedita alla carriera avvocatizia e notarile fin da prima del Rinascimento, accrebbe in prestigio e ricchezza con l’avvento di Gabrio (15091580) detto “Gran Gabrio”. Il Gran Gabrio fece una importante carriera militare prima sotto le milizie medicee e poi al servizio del papato tant’è che partecipò in qualità di Generale delle milizie pontificie alla battaglia di Lepanto. L’influenza della famiglia Serbelloni si estese a tutto il suolo nazionale e internazionale, come dimostrano il titolo di Duca di San Gabrio insignito nel 1684 dal napoletano Carlo III° d’Asburgo e successivamente di Grande di Spagna. La discendenza diretta della famiglia Serbelloni si interruppe nel ‘700 con l’unica figlia di Gian Galeazzo, Luisa, che sposò il marchese Ludovico Busca Arconati Visconti di Lomagna”.

“E invece del progetto e della conseguente costruzione del Palazzo di Corso Venezia?”

“Gabrio Serbelloni concepì l’idea di costruire in Milano un palazzo che fosse per bellezza e dimensioni all’altezza del censo della famiglia. Scelse

Since then, Palazzo Serbelloni has been directly involved in numerous events described to us here by Count Emilio Gola, President of the Serbelloni Foundation.

“President, first of all, how far back does the history of the Serbelloni family go?”

“The Serbelloni family, from way back before the Renaissance, were already titled counts belonging to the Lombard nobility, engaged in legal and notary affairs, and their wealth and prestige grew with the arrival of Gabrio (1509-1580) who was known as the “Great Gabrio”. The Great Gabrio had a successful military career, initially under the Medicean military forces and then at the service of the Papacy, to such an extent that he took part in the battle of Lepanto as a General in the papal army. The influence of the Serbelloni family extended throughout the national territory and abroad, as attested by the title of Duke of San Gabrio bestowed by the Neapolitan King Charles III of Habsburg in 1684, followed by that of Grande de España. The direct lineage of the Serbelloni family was interrupted in the 18th century with the only daughter of Gian Galeazzo, Luisa, who married the Marquis Ludovico Busca Arconati Viscount of Lomagna”.

“So, what about the architectural project and subsequent construction of the Palazzo in Corso Venezia?”

In conclusione ritengo che l’idea sia verosimilmente attribuibile al Parini che, conoscendone i modelli culturali e politici, indusse Gian Galeazzo a progettare un palazzo che divenisse una dimora di rappresentanza ma soprattutto che fosse aperta alla cittadinanza (come dimostra tra l’altro la biblioteca e il teatro messi a disposizione della popolazione e purtroppo andati distrutti con i bombardamenti del 1943)”.

“Arriviamo ai giorni nostri ... il Palazzo è ancora di proprietà della famiglia e come si presenta nello stato attuale?”

“Il Palazzo è giunto agli attuali proprietari Lalatta e Gola per via successoria dai Serbelloni attraverso i Busca e quindi i Sola; la dimora è quindi nella stes-

“Gabrio Serbelloni conceived the idea of constructing a palazzo in Milan whose beauty and size was to adequately represent the family status. He therefore chose to build it beyond the ring of canals at the Eastern Gate where it was possible to dispose of a sufficiently large area, and Cantoni, an important architect from Canton Ticino, was then summoned to design it. The progress of the construction work and its completion was overseen by his son, Gian Galeazzo, a pupil of Parini who was highly influential in presenting artists to contribute to the embellishment of the palazzo (the Carabelli brothers and Trabellisi are particularly worthy of mention). Finally, I believe it is quite plausible to attribute to Parini, knowing his political and cultural models, the idea that he led Gian Galeazzo to design a palazzo that was not only to serve as a prestigious dwelling but, above all, one that would open its doors to the city’s inhabitants (as shown for instance by the library and theatre which were placed at the disposal of the population and which, unfortunately, were destroyed by the bombings of 1943)”.

“This brings us down to the present day … the

Gian Ludovico Sola – nostro nonno – ha avuto il coraggio di ristrutturare il Palazzo inevitabilmente senza ripristinare gli spazi esistenti prima della distruzione citata ma attuando una ricostruzione che consentisse un utilizzo immobiliare razionale secondo i tempi. Fortunatamente sono rimasti nello stato originale le sale del piano nobile, l’androne concepito dal Cantoni per dare maggior risalto alla grandiosità del colonnato del cortile e le mura perimetrali, con il lato nord di mattoni a vista che si affaccia sul giardino, compreso tra Corso Venezia, Via Mozart e Via Melegari”.

“Dal dopoguerra in poi, Palazzo Serbelloni ha ospitato il Circolo della Stampa; è sede di altre importanti realtà?”

“Il Circolo della Stampa ha occupato le sale del piano nobile dal dopoguerra fino al dicembre 2010 ed è stata sicuramente una presenza importante che ha portato visibilità al Palazzo. In ogni

“The Palazzo has been passed down to the present owners, Lalatta and Gola, inherited that is from the Serbelloni through the Busca lineage and then the Sola family; the residence has therefore been in the same family for twelve generations with the thirteenth already on the doorstep! During the last world war, it underwent a disastrous fire that spared only the Napoleonic wing and the majestic Courtyard with its respective entrance hall. Gian Ludovico Sola – our grandfather – was brave enough to renovate the Palazzo, without of course restoring the existing areas before the afore-mentioned destruction but he carried out a reconstruction that allowed for a rational use of the estate according to the criteria of his times.

Fortunately the rooms on the main floor, the entrance hall specially designed by Cantoni to give greater emphasis to the magnificent colonnade of the courtyard, and the external walls whose northern facade in brick looks onto the garden confined between Corso Venezia, Via Mozart and Via Melegari, are still in their original state”.

“Certamente si. “From the post-war years onwards, Palazzo Serbelloni has provided accommodation to the Circolo della Stampa (the Press Circle); does it house any other important institutions?”

“The Circolo della Stampa has occupied the rooms on the main floor from the post-war period until December 2010 and this institution of unquestionable prestige has certainly given visibility to the Palazzo. In any case, let’s not forget that Palazzo Serbelloni has for many years been the headquarters of International companies operating in the spheres of finance and industry. Among the various noteworthy tenants of the past, I like to recall Enrico Mattei who had his own office in those of the Snam”.

“In recent years, have the owners been more receptive towards new uses for the Palazzo?”

“Yes, certainly. We have played host to some illustrious names belonging to the world of fashion and design (and not only) in the Courtyard and Garden which, thanks to the size and unique atmosphere of each of these spaces, offer prestigious settings to any event seeking widespread publicity, either in terms of

“La liberalizzazione delle sale del piano nobile da parte del Circolo della Stampa ha messo la Proprietà di fronte al quesito di come utilizzare questi spazi. La scelta è caduta sulla gestione diretta sia delle sale “napoleoniche” (indoor) che del cortile e del giardino (outdoor). A questa decisione si è arrivati nella convinzione che la presenza della famiglia nella conduzione dell’immobile nel suo complesso, desse concrete certezze di mantenimento dei contenuti storici e culturali del Palazzo, conservando il senso “cittadino” e il valore “milanese” dell’immobile, voluto dai tempi dei Serbelloni. Pertanto questa nuova attività è stata affidata alla Fondazione Serbelloni la quale, individuate al proprio interno alcune risorse umane e affiancate da professionisti del settore, ha dato vita a una realtà operativa nel settore della organizzazione e sviluppo degli eventi, garantendo nel contempo una soluzione di continuità generazionale per il prossimo futuro”.

Può raccontarci in dettaglio quali sono i vostri futuri progetti?”

“Come già citato la Fondazione Serbelloni si occupa direttamente della promozione degli spazi esterni ed interni del Palazzo e dei servizi ad essi connessi, dopo aver definito partnership fondamentali nelle competenze specifiche e strategiche in materia di conduzione di una location dedicata agli eventi. Tuttavia questa attività non deve essere limitata all’area promozionale o life-style tipicamente speculativa, ma deve

“Is there any internal organization for the management and marketing of these spaces?”

“When the Press Circle vacated the rooms on the main floor, the owners were faced with the question of how to use this space.

It was decided to directly manage both the “Napoleonic” rooms (indoors) and the courtyard/garden (outdoors).

This decision stemmed from the conviction that the family presence in the management of the entire estate, would materially guarantee a continuity of the building’s historical and cultural content, while also preserving the sense of “citizenship” and Milanese character of the property, an aspect that had been dear to the Serbelloni family. So, this new activity was entrusted to the Serbelloni Foundation which, once it had identified the necessary human resources within its own ranks and supported by experts in the field, gave life to a structure destined to operate in the organisation and

Can you tell us in detail about your future plans?”

“As already mentioned the Serbelloni Foundation is directly engaged in promoting the internal and external areas of the Palazzo and their respective services, after setting up fundamental partnerships in specific and strategic areas of know-how related to the management of a venue dedicated to events.

However, this activity must not be limited to a sphere that is merely promotional or profit-making but must also contemplate events of a cultural, artistic and humanistic nature, so that the complex of Corso Venezia may be identified as a universal city forum.

Certainly, at the moment, it is difficult to foresee in what way this activity will be segmented by interest and/or merchandise category, but it is the firm intention of the Foundation to restore to Palazzo Serbelloni those traditional and Milanese values,

“Proprio per perseguire l’obbiettivo di rendere gli spazi adatti ad ospitare eventi di qualsiasi genere purché di fascia alta e in linea con i desiderata della Fondazione, con particolare riguardo al mantenimento della valenza storico-culturale dell’immobile – come peraltro voluto dalla Sovraintendenza dei Beni Ambientali – abbiamo provveduto alla progettazione e al completamento dei lavori di riqualifica del Giardino mentre sono in corso interventi sia di messa a norma che di restauro delle sale del piano nobile.

Questi cambiamenti ci consentiranno infine di completare il nostro bouquet d’offerta con servizi aggiuntivi di

Ma come espresso in precedenza, rientra nella mission dedicare tempo e spazi al ricevimento di quelle manifestazioni che siano in sintonia con la parte meno commerciale della nostra organizzazione; saranno quindi ben accolti, progetti che abbiano il preciso scopo di “aiutare l’uomo”, in qualsiasi espressione purché adeguati alla situazione e in un contesto di massima trasparenza verso l’opinione pubblica.

Solo nel 2010 ad Hong Kong ci sono stati circa 80 nuovi collocamenti, ma le motivazioni sono molto più numerose di quanto ci si possa aspettare: punto di partenza è che la Cina negli ultimi anni è diventato il mercato di riferimento per il settore lusso ed il trend futuro non accenna ad alcun cambiamento di direzione. Ed è in Cina che Prada registra il maggiore tasso di crescita,così come buona parte delle altre aziende operanti nel lusso: nel 2010 l’area Asia Pacifico ha visto un incremento del giro di affari del 51%, superando così anche il tasso di crescita registrato dal Giappone (11%) degli storici mercati di riferimento di Europa (20%) ed USA (21%). Quotarsi nel mercato cinese significherebbe quindi una valutazione probabilmente più alta rispetto a quella del vecchio continente.

This symbol of Made in Italy which has chosen to be quoted on the Chinese stock exchange: is it a humiliation for piazza Affari? In 2010 alone, about 80 new listings were made in Hong Kong, for many more reasons than one might expect: first of all, in recent years China has become a key market for luxury goods and there are no signs of there being any reversal of this trend in the future. Furthermore, it is in China that Prada has achieved its highest growth rates, similarly to a good many other companies operating on the luxury goods market: in 2010 the Asian Pacific area reported an increase of 51% in its turnover, even exceeding the growth rate recorded in Japan (11%), the European markets that have always been among the most important (20%) and USA (21%). Therefore, going public on the Chinese market would probably bring home a higher quotation than would be possible on the old continent.

The choice of Hong Kong, which some believe might penalize European and American investors, cannot fail to please the President of the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, Ronald Arculli, who does not miss an opportunity to underline the appeal of high Chinese growth rates: “Hong Kong is positioned in the heart of Asia and this is an advantage over Milan, London or New York.”

di solidità e qualità, oltre che avere un’organizzazione interna maggiore legata al massiccio quantitativo di informazioni da immettere sul mercato borsistico.

Dall’altro lato la quotazione in borsa ha tutta una serie di oneri non da poco, motivi per i quali, insieme a motivazioni di matrice culturale, spesso le PMI italiane preferiscono evitare quest’operazione: per questo nei listini di borsa italiani le PMI sono rappresentate “solo” per il 40%, mentre in altri paesi la stessa fetta di rappresentanza sale fino al 60%.

Oltre al costo diretto dell’operazione stessa, come gli oneri previsti per l’entrata in borsa e la consulenza prestata dagli advisor per quotarsi, ci sono anche costi indiretti come conseguente il potenziamento del controllo del sistema aziendale e degli interessi dovuti a lungo termine agli azionisti.

Le motivazioni che spingono una società a quotarsi in borsa non si possono ridurre al tamponamento dei debiti: sarebbe un utilizzo distorto dello strumento che si ritorcerebbe contro chi lo ha utilizzato, oltre a non generare valore per gli azionisti. La Borsa è una scelta di gestione straordinaria volta a generare un flusso positivo sui quotidiani aspetti di gestione ordinaria: sceglierla vuol dire aver fatto un’attenta valutazione non solo della gestione aziendale, ma anche della società e delle sue prospettive di sviluppo, ovviamente non senza aver prima valutato tutti i percorsi alternativi.

Obiettivi per la società quotante saranno per esempio la diversificazione delle fonti finanziarie anche in vista di nuovi investimenti e acquisizioni, l’accrescimento del prestigio dell’azienda a livello internazionale nonché dello standing creditizio verso clienti e fornitori, l’ottenimento di una valutazione di mercato, la trasparenza degli obiettivi e la visibilità dell’operato del management da premiare anche lo stock option.

On the other hand, being quoted on the stock Exchange carries a considerable series of costs which, together with reasons of a cultural nature, often prevents Italian SMEs from deciding to make this operation: this is why “only” 40% of SMEs are listed on the Italian stock exchanges, while in other countries this percentage can be as high as 60%. As well as the direct outlay associated with the operation itself, such as the costs necessary to enter the Stock Exchange and the consultancy services provided by advisors with regards to being quoted, there are also additional indirect costs resulting from a reinforcement of management control and long-term interests due to shareholders. The reasons prompting companies to go public cannot be restricted to debt plugging: it would be a distorted use of this tool that would have a boomerang effect on whoever adopts it, as well as failing to generate value for shareholders. The Stock Exchange is an extraordinary management decision destined to generate a positive effect on the daily aspects of ordinary management: such a decision implies that a careful assessment has already been made, not only of company management, but also with regards to the company itself and its development prospects, obviously without failing to assess all alternative courses of action.

For example, the possible objectives of newly listed companies may comprise the diversification of financial sources, also in anticipation of new investments and acquisitions, the international enhancement of company prestige, as well as its credit standing with customers and suppliers, the attainment of a market evaluation, the transparency of objectives and the visibility of management performance to be awarded by stock options.

All objectives that the Prada Group will certainly pursue, also in view of their renewed confidence in further development.

na volta il lusso era prerogativa dei pochi facoltosi che potevano permetterselo e quindi decisamente fuori dalla portata del resto della società. In tempi recenti si è evoluto nel desiderio di appartenenza, così come teorizzato da Maslow nel 1943, come diretta conseguenza del tentativo di soddisfare il bisogno di affetto.

Nel 21 secolo, il lusso si è sfaccettato in svariate forme o, per così dire, livelli di suntuosità, andando dall’autentico lusso inaccessibile al lusso per le masse, verso il quale la società del consumismo ha deciso di elevare anche il consumatore del più basso livello, innalzandolo fino al podio del lusso, motivo per il quale si parla di lusso massificato.

L’ultima tendenza non è solo quella di apparire o di distinguersi, ma piuttosto di avere una gratificazione psicologica che esuli dal mero valore esperienziale.

Ciò ha implicato dei cambiamenti radicali nelle politiche e pratiche di marketing: un marchio, sia esso di lusso o meno, è la personificazione di un mix di contenuti razionali ed emozionali che un brand di lusso non può scindere, ma deve piuttosto saper fondere per sposare la vera natura del lusso.

Gli strumenti analitici ad oggi disponibili per gli operatori del lusso, presentano alcuni limiti, inclusa la valutazione di un mercato che sta cambiando e si sta espandendo ed all’interno del quale anche il cliente è in continua evoluzione.

uxury was once upon a time only in the hands of the very few and wealthy and therefore truly well out of the reach of the rest of society.

Since then it has evolved into a desire for belonging, as theorised by Maslow in 1943 it is direct consequence of mankind trying to satisfy a need of affection. In the 21st century luxury evolved into several forms or stratum of sumptuousness, going from the original inaccessible luxury to luxury for the masses in which the society of consumerism sets out to elevate the customer to the lowest level of the luxury podium, that of mass luxury.

The latest trend is not just to appear or distinguish oneself but to gratify a psychological needs that stem from a pure experiential value. This has forced radical changes in marketing policy and practice: a brand, be it luxury or otherwise, is personified by a mix of rational and emotional content that a luxury brand cannot separate, while it should rather blend them to match the very essence of the degree of luxury.

The luxury market analytical tools available today, have several limitations including the need to evaluate a luxury market that is changing and expanding and in which the customer is evolving too.

For this purpose three specific models have been created by the author that, together with the final findings, provide further understanding of the mechanisms that bring man to worship luxury, whatever its degree of uniqueness.

glance at Claudia’s biography reveals a vast and diversified experience that has taken shape on the international stage and is distinguished by a constant striving for professional growth.

Claudia was born in Arezzo, one of Italy’s art capitals.

She studied law in Florence, earning top marks. Her professional career began in one of the most important accounting firms in Arezzo and she remains on the board of directors to this day.

Subsequently moving to cosmopolitan London, where she studied towards an MBA obtaining excellent results, she experienced a kind of cultural rebirth, beginning to encounter the innovative, winning concepts that would shape her future professional horizons.

All this contributed to her young but already rich experience.

Milano was the next step in Claudia’s professional growth. With a marked preference for the luxury sector, she took part in entrepreneurial and university projects in which she emphasised careful and studied attention to the twin values of beauty and content.

The numerous seminars, congresses and events in which she participates - which often see her working in an organisational and publishing capacity, both for magazines and web portals – have given her a deep analytical mastery of the various components that make up this sector. “Dottor Luigi Foscale, che cosa la spinse verso l’Est Europa alla fine degli anni Novanta?”

“Dr. Luigi Foscale, what prompted you to turn your sights to Eastern Europe in the late nineties?”

“In effetti, quando parlavo di scelte contro corrente, mi riferivo principalmente alle esperienze vissute nell’Est Europa, area economica in cui ho pioneristicamente creduto. Infatti, sin dal 1997, avendo intravisto un florido mercato emergente in Romania ho iniziato a operare nel settore immobiliare di quel paese. Le mie previsioni si sono avverate e l’aver effettuato, allora, delle scelte coraggiose mi ha premiato. Non solo la Romania oggi è entrata nell’Unione Europea, ma l’economia rumena ha conosciuto momenti d’incredibile floridezza dopo il 2000, che hanno confermato le mie intuizioni di ben quindici anni fa.

Certo, gli ostacoli non sono mancati; nel 1998 ricordo la cosiddetta “crisi del rublo” che ha piegato e spaventato molti imprenditori. Ma credere fermamente nel mio progetto mi ha portato a scegliere di restare sul mercato e, superato il momento difficile, le soddisfazioni non sono tardate ad arrivare. La situazione attuale preoccupa molti imprenditori, ma, dopo l’esperienza difficile vissuta nel 1998, sono fiducioso, e oggi con la mia realtà, la Axet Real Estate Management, continuo a essere presente nella capitale rumena”.

“When I mentioned decisions that go against the mainstream, I was referring in particular to my experience in Eastern Europe, an economic market where I practically blazed a trail. In fact, as early as 1997, having predicted a florid emerging market in Romania, I started to operate in its real estate sector. My forecasts were confirmed and I reaped the rewards of what at the time had been a courageous decision.

Not only has Romania become a member state of the European Union, but the Romanian economy has experienced moments of incredible growth after 2000, which endorsed the intuition I had had fifteen years earlier. Of course, there was no lack of obstacles to surmount; I recall the so-called “rouble crisis” of 1998, that clipped the wings and scared a good many business people. However, my firm belief in this project led me to remain on the market and, once this difficult period had passed, it was not long before satisfactory results started to come in. The present situation is worrying many entrepreneurs, but after the difficult time I had in 1998, I am quite confident and continue to operate in the Romanian capital with my firm, the Axet Real Estate Management”.

Il progetto d’investimento che ho iniziato e sviluppato riguarda l’acquisizione di una struttura ricettiva sulla costa meridionale del Mar Nero, a Tsarevo. Il complesso Bay View, il nome deriva dalla posizione dominante su una baia, sorge su un tratto di costa poco frequentato rispetto ad altre zone dello stesso litorale.

Diciamo che, anche in questo caso, con un po’ di coraggio, intravedo la grande possibilità di sviluppare turisticamente una zona intatta dal punto di vista naturalistico e con un potenziale ricettivo molto rilevante.

I numeri sembrano darmi ragione, perché a pochi mesi dall’investimento l’interesse degli investitori è cresciuto considerevolmente”.

“I am absolutely convinced of it. In fact, my latest business venture in Eastern Europe in 2010, was actually in this country.

The investment project I set up and developed related to the acquisition of a hospitality complex on the South coast of the Black Sea, at Tsarevo. The Bay View complex owes its name to its dominant position overlooking a bay on a stretch of coast that is far less crowded than other areas on the same coastline.

Let’s say that, with a bit of courage, I see a great opportunity, also in this case, for the touristic development of a naturally uncontaminated area endowed with significant hospitality potential.

Silvio Pasotti è un “Magister” dell’arte, che si inserisce a pieno titolo nell’infinita schiera dei “Magistri vagantes” che nei secoli hanno esportato la cultura del Romanico e del Barocco in tutta Europa con un’organizzazione e una competenza che non finiscono di stupire.

Da Bergamo come da Lugano partivano dai villaggi delle valli e delle pianure, dai monti e dai laghi ciascuno con la sua specifica dotazione artigianale-artistica. E le ricerche storiche continuano a svelare pagine di un archivio infinito di nuove famiglie, nuovi nomi, nuove firme, nuove sigle, nuove collaborazioni e vicinanze che a noi oggi, organizzati come siamo, parrebbero impossibili e un tempo, lungo i secoli, procedevano di pari passo sui due versanti della Lombardia, quella milanese e quella elvetica. A native of Bergamo, he has presented his works in various prestigious galleries, comprising Lugano (1959, Gallery of Modern Art) as if to highlight his sense of belonging to a common cultural context which, in spite of today’s frontiers, is reinforced by a century-old common bond.

Silvio Pasotti is a “Magister” of art, with every right to belong to the infinite ranks of the “Magistri vagantes” who, down through the centuries, exported Romanic and Baroque culture throughout the whole of Europe with an organization and expertise that has never failed to amaze. From both Bergamo and Lugano they set off from the villages of valleys and flat lands, from mountains and lakes, each with his own particular endowment of arts and crafts. Al punto che il suo viaggiare ben programmato, ossia il proporsi come artista in modo motivato e consapevole, si è inserito in un’ampia continuità storica in cui si ritrovano due elementi di fondo, tra loro ben collegati: da una parte l’intelligenza del “fare”, sviluppata sull’onda di magistrali competenze maturate lungo il corso delle generazioni, e dall’altra la continuità della ricerca propria di chi, consapevole dei suoi mezzi, cerca sempre ulteriori prospettive.

I mentioned Lugano to give a historical and territorial connotation to this figure, as an individual who has not chosen to inhabit the cocoon of his magnificent town of Bergamo but has cultivated a wider historical and geographical outlook. Right from the start, he sought out new areas of activity in a way that was coherent with the trail being blazed at that time by the various seasons of art history. To such an extent that his wellplanned course, that is to say, his conscious and motivated self-presentation as an artist, fitted into a wider historical continuity comprising two basic and closely associated elements: on one hand, an operative intelligence developed in the surge of masterly skills matured in the course of generations, and on the other hand, an on-going research typical of all those who, aware of their resources, continue to seek out wider perspectives.

La sua arte persiste e resiste ad ogni sorta di contraffazione mediatica del visibile per la necessità di essere linguaggio rispondente agli impulsi primari del colore e della materia. In questo senso la pittura di Silvio Pasotti lavora sulla memoria del suo passato come spazio che si rafforza nel profondo, libero dai vincoli del nuovo a tutti i costi. Fare pittura è vivere nella dimensione del tempo ulteriore, sostenere lo sguardo in attesa di visioni, di apparizioni, filtrare la coscienza collettiva con la forza del proprio mondo interiore, onirico e poetico. Il colore diventa segno.

La faccia invisibile del reale - Le figure e le cose sono rese - e insieme trascese - da una costellazione di note timbriche, che vibrano in armonia o in dissonanza, esprimendo lacerazioni e suture, ansiose interrogazioni, scatti implosivi. E' il demone della metamorfosi e della deformazione che si insinua negli aspetti metamorfici del reale e attenta a tutto quanto vi è di scontato, di deja vu e sul quale la nostra immaginazione si va adagiando. Ma non quella di un artista quale Silvio Pasotti, che va alla ricerca dell’altra faccia della realtà, quella invisibile.

Con l'accelerazione che accompagna la comunicazione degli eventi nella modernità, non ci sono più dimensioni e luoghi distinti, ma la commistione del vicino e del lontano, del presente e del futuro, del reale e dell'irreale: mixaggio della storia, delle storie, del sogno e dell'utopia. Historical reinterpretation – The post-modern cultural vision of Silvio Pasotti is mainly coloured by a disenchanted reinterpretation of history, salvaged once and for all from any finalistic temptation as it views the renunciation of the great projects for mankind, which had been elaborated by the Illuminists and adopted by modernity. This leads to a new interpretation or, if we prefer, a new style, an aesthetic form based on the unconventional and ironic rediscovery and reutilization of a formal repertoire of the past, in which any distinction between Culture with a capital C and that of mass consumption is abolished. Our thoughts go to Charles Baudelaire when he wrote in his prophetic “Painter of modern life” (1863) that "modernity is the transitory, fugitive, fortuitous half of art, while the other half is eternal and unchangeable”. His art endures and resists any form of media falsification of what is visible to the eye, in order to become a language that responds to the primary impulses of colour and texture. In this respect, Silvio Pasotti’s paintings work on his recollections of the past like a space that acquires strength in relation to its profundity, free from the tyranny of having to be innovative at all costs. The art of painting entails living in the dimension of an extended time, being constantly on the lookout for visions and apparitions, filtering the collective consciousness with the force of one’s poetic and dreamlike inner life.

The invisible side of reality – Figures and objects are rendered – and at the same time transcended – by a constellation of timbre notes that may vibrate harmoniously or tunelessly, to express ruptures and sutures, anxious interrogations, implosive outbursts. It is the demon of metamorphosis and defor-

Through the scene of modern art – On contemplating the artist’s most recent works, the observer is immediately impressed by how Silvio Pasotti maintains and even develops an amazing operative freshness, which he has picked up from the most meaningful seasons of modern art, while nonetheless preserving an underlying perspective of the Renaissance style. Starting from Bergamo where he was trained in the glorious Carrara Accademy in the school of Achille Funi, accompanying Silvio Pasotti along the trail that leads from Lugano to Paris, and anywhere else in the world, there is something that belongs to the Italian Renaissance heritage, from Florence to Venice. He has the stylistic and chromatic allure of those extraordinary seasons, the gift of inventiveness and reversal, the confident step of those who make their way through the world of art, knowing they can count on some formidable benchmarks.

Indeed, his work is a process of on-going research: timely, continuous, methodical and devoid of revolutions. Even though, as always happens to those who dare go beyond the brink of stability, it is possible to perceive some sharp peaks which are then smoothed out into the responsible attitude of a newly acquired notion. er qualche tempo ho parlato del fatto che, da quando è esplosa la crisi dei mutui subprime, nulla è stato veramente risolto e l'unica via che è stata intrapresa sta ritardando l’inevitabile giorno dell’accettazione del fatto che si è trasferito il debito del settore privato al settore pubblico.

La crisi del debito sovrano sarà il nuovo subprime.

Dalla fine della WW2 (seconda guerra mondiale), l'Europa e gli Stati Uniti hanno accumulato debito a tutti i livelli ed ora è troppo alto. Il recente rialzo nei mercati a partire dal mese di settembre è stato alimentato dall'euforia del QE2 (Quantitative Easing 2) piuttosto che da dati economici fondati.

Il fattore chiave del QE2 non è stato l'annuncio iniziale, ma il fatto che sarà a tempo indeterminato fino a quando la FED otterrà i risultati desiderati: una maggiore inflazione, il calo della disoccupazione, una crescita più veloce.

L'euro ha recentemente invertito il suo declino, perché l'Irlanda ha patteggiato a malincuore l'accettazione di un pacchetto di salvataggio da parte dell'UE / FMI per stabilizzare il settore bancario e l'economia (grande novità fondamentale ...). Il Portogallo sarà il prossimo o dobbiamo prima rivedere la tragedia greca?

Sarà la Spagna il punto di svolta che farà collassare l'euro nel corso del 2011 prima di rivolgere la nostra attenzione alla dissolutezza degli Stati Uniti?

Lo scenario attuale mi ricorda sempre di più la lunga estate del 2007, con la bolla finanziaria di Wall Street sui mutui, nel caso dei subprime; ora invece la bolla finanziaria dei governi mondiali, per quanto riguarda la Grecia, ha segnato punti di svolta cruciali sia per le percezioni del mercato che per la stabilità di esso.

Io non vedo nulla nello scenario attuale che mi faccia cambiare opinione sul fatto che la crisi greca ha segnato un cambiamento fondamentale nelle percezioni del mercato.

or some time now I have been talking about the fact that since the subprime crisis unfolded, nothing has been solved and the only route that has been taken is delaying the inevitable day of reckoning by transferring the private sector debt burden to the public sector. The Sovereign debt crisis will be the new subprime.

The recent upward move in the markets since September has been fuelled by the euphoria of QE2 rather than sound economic data.

The key driver behind QE2’s effect on the market is not the initial announcement but that it will be openended until the Fed achieves its desired results: higher inflation, lower unemployment, faster growth.

The Euro recently reversed its decline because Ireland has reluctantly accepted a bailout package by the EU/IMF to stabilize its banking sector and economy - news that has, rightly, been welcomed by the markets. Will Portugal be next or do we revisit the Greek tragedy first? Will Spain be the tipping point that will make the Euro break up during 2011 before turning our attention to the US profligacy?

The current environment increasingly reminds me of the long summer of 2007 with the Mortgage/Wall Street Finance Bubble, in the case of subprime, and the Global Government Finance Bubble, with respect to Greece. Both were marked critical inflection points for market perceptions and stability.

I do not see anything in the current scenario that tempts me to back away from my view that the Greek crisis marked a critical change in market perceptions.

Proprio come nel 2007/2008 la fase di crisi iniziale ha scatenato una volatilità disordinata ed un’instabilità in tutti i mercati, così d’ora in avanti la volatilità, l'incertezza e la pressione crescente sui mercati si riveleranno una macchina demolitrice della fiducia, come è accaduto per i subprime. Gli investitori devono allacciare la cintura di sicurezza e prepararsi ad affrontare un periodo di volatilità disumana.

L'attività della FED con le misure di QE2, proprio come è successo in passato con la bolla tecnologica e, successivamente, con la crisi dei subprime, sta manipolando i mercati quando invece l'economia ha bisogno di una spinta di altro tipo, cercando di creare un effetto-ricchezza/benessere con la consapevolezza che tali azioni non avranno alcun effetto diretto sull'economia. Ecco come viene creata una bolla.

La soluzione alla crisi attuale del debito sovrano verrà da una combinazione di misure di austerità, svalutazione monetaria e una gara da parte dei governi per creare inflazione con lo scopo di ridurre l'onere del debito.

L'inflazione dapprima ci farà sentir bene e le autorità saranno applaudite, ma come non si può dire di essere un po' in gravidanza (o lo si è o non lo si è), altrettanto non può esistere un po’ d’inflazione (o c’è o non c’è) una volta entrati nella sua spirale.

Purtroppo gli investitori, dopo essere stati devastati nel

Confidence that fiscal and monetary stimulus will ensure a sustainable global recovery has disappeared. The view is that massive stimulus can’t assure market stability. In fact, profligate fiscal and monetary measures will likely prove destabilizing.

Just like in 2007/2008 the initial crisis phase has unleashed wild volatility and instability throughout different markets. Over time volatility, uncertainty and increasing market stress will prove a subprimelike wrecking ball on investor confidence. Investors have to tighten their seat belt and prepare to face an era of inhuman volatility. Just as those who dismissed how the subprime eruption would fundamentally alter the financial landscape would later come to regret their complacency, the same will happen to those who remain complacent now.

Just as it has done in the past with the technology bubble and subsequently the subprime crisis, the Fed is manipulating the markets with QE2 when the economy is need of a boost, trying to create a wealth feel-good effect but with the knowledge these actions will have no direct effect on the economy. That’s how a bubble is created.

The solution to the current Sovereign debt crisis requires a combination of austerity measures, currency debasement and a race by governments to inflate their way out of the debt burden.

Inflation will feel good at first and authorities will be applauded but as there is no such thing as a little pregnancy, there is no such thing as little inflation once you enter its spiral.

Sadly investors, after being devastated in real estate and equities, have fallen in love with bonds and under such an inflationary scenario the outcome will be wealth destruction on a scale rarely seen before.

In the current environment I worry about several factors:

Nella situazione attuale mi preoccupano diversi fattori: la FED che sta attivamente manipolando i mercati; la prospettiva di una guerra valutaria con la Cina ed i mercati emergenti, poiché la FED sta inondando i mercati di dollari nel tentativo di aumentare l'inflazione; l'Europa di fronte alla prospettiva di collasso dell’Euro nel 2011, nonostante i politici continuino a parlare ai media dicendo che il futuro dell'euro non è in dubbio. Se fossero veramente sicuri perché avrebbero bisogno di dirlo? Non vi ricordano le parole rassicuranti che ci hanno raccontato sulle istituzioni finanziarie nel corso del 2008?

Gli investitori dovrebbero essere molto consapevoli dei rischi che stanno affrontando in questo mercato speculativo. Investiremo selettivamente in società che sono ricche di beni reali, esposte alla continua richiesta di materie prime e prodotti; valuteremo attentamente storie di cambiamenti societari; saremo compratori di opzioni contro un forte aumento dei tassi di interesse; l'oro rimane un buon investimento in questo ambiente di incertezza e manterremo alcune riserve di liquidità elevati per sfruttare la volatilità inevitabile al fine di essere pronti ad acquistare quando tutti saranno spaventati perché per ora siamo noi ad aver paura.

(If they were genuinely confident why would they need to make any announcement?

Doesn’t it remind you of the reassuring announcements we were told about financial institutions during 2008?)

Investors should be very aware of the risks they are facing in this speculative market. To counter these potentially destructive macro forces, we will be selectively investing in: • companies that are rich in real assets, • companies that are exposed to the continuous demand in raw materials and commodities, • turnaround stories, • hedging instruments to protect against a sharp rise in interest rates, • gold, which will remain a good investment in this environment of uncertainty We will also be maintaining high cash reserves in our portfolios to take advantage of the inevitable volatility in order to be greedy when everybody is fearful. For now, though, we are fearful.

“Telecomunicazioni ed energia sono le due macro aree che ho seguito più da vicino negli ultimi anni e, a mio parere, in questo momento, le risorse energetiche alternative rappresentano una sfida avvincente, strategica e anche remunerativa in tutto il mondo. Voglio citare come esempio il settore del fotovoltaico, oggi molto di moda soprattutto in Europa per via degli incentivi legati al protocollo di Kyoto. Inoltre, in questo settore, c’è una sensibilità ancora maggiore dopo i tragici eventi che hanno colpito il Giappone. Ma anche gli Emirati Arabi, sono rientrato da poco da Abu Dhabi, hanno realizzato la prima isola a impatto ambientale zero; infatti, l'80% del fabbisogno energetico di circa 50.000 abitanti è stato assicurato dai pannelli solari. Dunque anche i proprietari dei pozzi petroliferi più produttivi di tutto il pianeta si muovano in questa direzione, e io lo giudico un segnale forte e significativo”.

“E cosa ne pensa invece lei, Sig. Lauro?”

“A mio avviso, per quanto riguarda il settore finanziario, stiamo assistendo a importanti cambiamenti dovuti, da una parte alle normative sempre più severe e dall’altra a una clientela sempre più esigente e sofisticata, alla continua ricerca di un chiaro e preciso valore aggiunto. Questi cambiamenti, che metteranno a dura prova i modelli di business già esistenti, offriran-

“Telecommunications and energy are the two macro areas that I Roberto Nardini have followed most closely in recent years and, in my opinion, alternative energy sources currently represent a fascinating, strategic and remunerative challenge throughout the world. One sector well worth mentioning is that of photovoltaics which are particularly in vogue in Europe thanks to the incentives associated with the Kyoto protocol. Moreover, this sector has become even more sensitive after the tragic events which have hit Japan. But also in the Arab Emirates: I have just returned from Abu Dhabi where they have created the first island having a zero environmental impact; in fact 80% of the energy requirements of about 50,000 inhabitants is provided by solar panels.

So, even the owners of the most productive oil wells on the planet are moving in this direction, and I judge this to be highly indicative and significant”.

“And what about you, Mr. Lauro?”

“As far as the financial sector is concerned, I think we are seeing important changes due to increasingly stricter rules on the one hand and even more demanding and sophisticated clients on the other hand, who are always looking for a clear and specific added value. These changes, which will test the business models that already exist, will also offer interesting opportunities. Therefore, we aim to offer our support

“Ing. Nardini, da quante persone è composta la vostra squadra?”

“Da circa quindici persone, tutte con profili specifici legati a diversi settori industriali. Ognuna di loro possiede una grande esperienza e ha una fitta rete di relazioni in Europa, Africa, Sud America e Arabia”.

“Sig. Lauro, con i suoi collaboratori durante questi primi mesi oltre a occuparvi di progetti finanziari avete spaziato anche in altri settori ...”

ohn Gandolfi, londinese di nascita, ha svolto i suoi primi incarichi professionali nella City e, dal 1970, ha avuto sempre ruoli direttivi in diverse società di brokeraggio nel Regno Unito, in Italia e in Ticino, in Svizzera. Nel 1986 ha fondato la sua Società e, nell’ambito del suo settore, ha partecipato come relatore a numerosi convegni, ha ricoperto il ruolo di presidente dell’Associazione svizzera dei broker Lloyd’s dal 1993 al 2002 ed è autore di numerosi articoli che riguardano la sua professione. Dal 2005, ha al suo fianco suo figlio Pietro, che si occupa principalmente del settore svizzero privato e aziendale, e Ares Pagnamenta, perito federale che, come responsabile, gestisce i portafogli con le compagnie d’assicurazione, le casse malati e le fondazioni di previdenza svizzere.

Pagnamenta, docente AFA (Associazione Formazione Assicuratori), possiede una grande esperienza in vari settori: sinistri, aziendali e degli appalti.

A John Gandolfi abbiamo chiesto di raccontarci cosa contraddistingue la sua Società. “Ritengo che una delle nostre qualità sia la grande attenzione con la quale ci rivolgiamo a ognuno dei nostri clienti. ohn Gandolfi, originally from London, began his career in the City and has held various positions in brokerage firms in the United Kingdom, Italy and the Ticino region of Switzerland since 1970. He founded his own company in 1986.

He held the position of president of the Swiss association of Lloyd’s brokers from 1993 to 2002 and has spoken at numerous conventions and written several articles on his profession.

Since 2005 Gandolfi he has been flanked by his son Pietro, who is primarily concerned with private and corporate insurance in Switzerland, and Ares Pagnamenta, a federal appraiser responsible for managing portfolios with insurance companies, health insurance and pension funds in Switzerland. Pagnamenta, an instructor with AFA (Associazione Formazione Assicuratori – Insurers’ Training Associa-tion), has many years of experience in a variety of sectors: claims, corporate and contracting.

We asked John Gandolfi what makes his company different. “I think one of our John P. Gandolfi qualities is the attention we dedicate to every single one of our clients. “But there are risks, such as the natural disasters of recent years, which no-one can foresee and which have a very high cost in terms of insurance …”

“Certamente, al di là della tragedia umanitaria che è incalcolabile, gli ultimi quindici mesi sono costati ai riassicuratori internazionali più di cinquanta miliardi di dollari USA. Comunque sia, che i costi dello tsunami e del terremoto giapponese per i riassicuratori internazionali siano stati quindici o trenta miliardi, sarà difficile conoscere il dato definitivo perché ci vorranno degli anni prima di recuperare le perdite del 2010 e del 2011. Se prendiamo in considerazione l’ammontare dei premi riassicurativi globali annuali del National Catastrophe Team, che approssimativamente è di 18 miliardi di dollari rispetto alle perdite congiunte del 2010 e del 2011 di cinquanta miliardi di dollari in situazioni di catastrofi, ne emerge un quadro sconvolgente”. “Nei casi di catastrofe naturale a cui abbiamo assistito ultimamente, a quanto ammontano i costi secondo i periti che hanno effettuato le valutazioni?”

“Definitely. Beyond the humanitarian tragedy, which is incalculable, the last fifteen months have cost international reinsurance firms more than fifty billion US dollars. However that may be, whether the cost of the tsunami and the earthquake in Japan for international reinsurers is fifteen or thirty billion, it will be hard to find out what the final figure is because it will take us years to recover the losses of 2010 and 2011.

If we look at the amount of global annual reinsurance premiums of the National Catastrophe Team, which is about 18 billion dollars, in relation to the losses of 2010 and 2011, which total about fifty billion dollars due to natural disasters, the picture is very disconcerting”.

“What is the cost of the most recent natural disasters, according to the assessors?”

“The assessors who have been estimating the losses are still actively working on appraisal of the dama-

On the other hand, the economic consequences of the events in Japan for the reinsurance market should paradoxically be quite low, because Japan has a state-controlled earthquake reinsurance company providing coverage which cannot be bought on the private market. At the moment the total cost estimated by the Japanese government could be 300 billion dollars”.

“Yes, that’s right, the cost of reinsurance of natural disasters has been quite low so far; there have however been signs that this will change, and this will have consequences not only for the insurance market in general, but for insured parties all over the world.

ualcuno ricorda la mitica radio Monteceneri, la libera Radio Monteceneri che portava in Italia un sentore di libertà durante la guerra.

Alla fine degli anni Cinquanta la “Televisione svizzera” con le trasmissioni da Lugano si innestò su questa storia straordinaria proponendosi con la stessa verve, con la voglia di creare programmi e con un Telegiornale che gli stessi italiani giudicavano più credibile di quelli di mamma RAI, troppo ufficiali ed anche ministeriali. Furono anni incredibili di continua espansione. Quella che era diventata la “Radiotelevisione svizzera di lingua italiana” si poteva captare lungo tutta la Penisola, fino a Napoli ed anche oltre.

Con milioni di telespettatori, per tutti gli anni Sessanta e i primi Settanta era di fatto la seconda tivù in Italia.

Al punto che la prima donna a presentare un programma sulla RAI fu la svizzera Mascia Cantoni. Non poteva votare (il diritto di voto per le donne verrà accettato in Svizzera solo nel 1971) ma era una presentatrice bella, brava e competente. Come tanti altri di una squadra che seppe proporre un modo nuovo di fare giornalismo, anche d’inchiesta. Un po’ sullo stile anglosassone.

Oggi la RSI è un’azienda con oltre 1000 dipendenti e la capacità di distinguersi nella sempre più nebulosa e indecifrabile galassia radiotelevisiva. Forse è troppo parlare di modello, ma sicuramente rimane una presenza che continua a raccogliere ammirazione e stima. “Voi sì che siete seri” si sente spesso dire anche a sud di Chiasso, memori di quegli anni formidabili ma anche della persistente capacità di fare una radio e una televisione “diverse”.

Capaci di resistere alla banalizzazione dei messaggi, che oggi pare dominare soprattutto in tivù.

ome may remember the mythical Radio Monteceneri, the free Radio Monteceneri that brought a breath of freedom to Italy during the war. In the late fifties, “Swiss television”, grafted on to this tradition by broadcasting from Lugano with the same verve and desire to create programmes, including a newscast that even Italians considered to be more credible than that of “Mamma RAI” with its excessively official and ministerial tone. Those were extraordinary years of constant expansion. What had become the “Italian-speaking Swiss Radio and Television” could be picked up all the way down the peninsula as far as Naples and beyond. With millions of viewers, throughout the sixties and seventies, it had become to all intents and purposes the second TV channel in Italy. To such an extent that the first female speaker to present a programme on the RAI was Mascia Cantoni, of Swiss nationality. She could not vote (women’s right to vote was only passed in Switzerland in 1971) but she was an expert, competent and attractive presenter. Like the numerous other members of a team that had successfully invented a whole new approach to journalism, including documentary journalism. Somewhat in the Anglo-Saxon style. Today, the RSI is a company with over 1000 employees and a particular talent for making its own distinctive mark on the increasingly nebulous and incomprehensible galaxy of radio and television. The use of the term “model” may appear to be an exaggeration, but it is still an institution that continues to inspire admiration and respect. “Yours is a certainly a network to be taken seriously” is a frequently heard expression even further south of Chiasso, in recollection of those fantastic years but also thanks to an unfailing capacity to produce a “different” model of radio and television. One able to withstand the growing tendency to trivialize information, which seems to dominate television channels in particular.

“Ci si muoveva in un quadro molto più semplice. Noi eravamo e siamo un’ Azienda di servizio pubblico, lo stesso la RAI, non c’erano problemi di diritti e interessi commerciali attorno a radio e televisione, anche i rapporti tra gli Stati su questa materia non erano complicati. La “Televisione Svizzera” arrivava generosamente in Italia senza problemi.

Tutto si è complicato ed è diventato irrisolvibile con l’avvento delle radio e tivù commerciali o private che dir si voglia, soprattutto ma non solo sul versante dei diritti d’antenna”.

In Italia, soprattutto al nord molti rimpiangono quella presenza che era diventata abituale...

“Oggi una legge ci impedisce di investire i proventi del canone per irradiare programmi all’estero.

Inoltre tanto RAI quanto Mediaset difendono puntigliosamente il loro territorio da qualsiasi intromissione. La SSR, ossia la nostra sede centrale, diffonde

“Nowadays a law prevents us from investing the proceeds of the television licence fee to broadcast programmes abroad. Moreover, both the RAI and Mediaset obstinately defend their territory from any

Apart from the free zone represented by Internet, antenna rights now dominate the scene. It is impossible for RSI to cross the border by even a few kilometres.

Eppure quel rimpianto, quella voglia di televisione svizzera ... come lo interpreta?

“Fa piacere naturalmente essere ancora richiesti ma fa ancora più piacere ci sia riconosciuta la qualità dei nostri programmi. Questo è il nostro patrimonio e questo è anche quanto ci distingue dalla situazione radiotelevisiva italiana. Noi non abbiamo una concorrenza interna sfrenata per cui possiamo guardare al contenuto, al valore aggiunto dei nostri programmi al di là dei numeri dell’audience, che per noi non è una sorta di mannaia, ossia l’unico criterio di giudizio. La concorrenza esterna risponde a criteri diversi dai nostri, il che ci sprona a proseguire lungo la strada della qualità”.

Radio e televisione come servizio pubblico. Ma come si coniuga oggi un pubblico servizio all’altezza dei tempi in una situazione di deregulation?

“Siamo una radio e televisione generaliste, che si rivolgono a tutti. Dobbiamo tener conto della declinazione di quello che comunemente si definisce pubblico interesse, ma soprattutto voliamo e riusciamo a distinguerci per la qualità dei programmi. Che significa essere super partes, essere credibili, rispettare il pubblico, anzi i diversi pubblici. Ci rivolgiamo ai cittadini, non alla massa di clienti della pubblicità e tantomeno a chi fa pubblicità, il che ci ridurrebbe ad un’offerta di puro intrattenimento. Vogliamo continuare ad essere credibili con programmi non urlati che diano accesso a tutte le componenti del Paese, spazio a tutte le voci. Dobbiamo fermarci due passi prima di un sistema basato sullo scandalismo, sulla difformità, su tutto quello che non rientra nella norma. Questo ha un prezzo, non è sempre sexy o

And yet that feeling of nostalgia, that desire for Swiss television … how do you interpret it?

“We are pleased of course that there is still a demand for our services, but it makes us even happier that the quality of our programmes is widely acknowledged.

This is our heritage and it is what sets us apart from the Italian radio and television scenario. We do not have to deal with ferocious competition within our Country, so we may focus on content, on the added value of our programmes, regardless of audience share which, in our case, does not represent a sort of sword of Damocles, or the sole yardstick of judgment. Foreign competition responds to criteria that differ from ours, and this encourages us to continue to focus on quality”.

Radio and television as a public service. But what form should a public service take to be abreast of the times in today’s deregulated world?

“We are a radio and television network of a generalist nature, one which targets a wide public. We must bear in mind the various facets of what is generally defined as public interest but our primary objective is to distinguish ourselves for the quality of our programmes, and we do this well. This means being impartial and credible, as well as having a duty to respect our public, or rather our various publics. We address citizens, not mainstream advertising consumers, and even less so advertisers, which would reduce our product offering to one of mere entertainment. We wish to go on being credible with programmes that are never excessively loud, but which are open to all types of people throu-

particolarmente brillante, ma l’impegno, la serietà e il rispetto non hanno bisogno di lustrini o di toni gridati. Siamo una radiotelevisione riflessiva e non d’attacco”.

Per quale territorio e con quali obiettivi?

La Svizzera non è immaginabile senza il plurilinguismo, il multiculturalismo e le differenti declinazioni che compongono il federalismo. Non siamo una radio e una televisione per un piccolo territorio ma concorriamo a completare la visione federalista.

Esistiamo anche per chi risiede a Basilea, Zurigo o Ginevra. Nel rispetto delle altre regioni abbiamo il compito di tenere agganciata la Svizzera Italiana al resto della Svizzera trovando ogni giorno l’equilibrio tra una realtà ristretta ma inserita in un territorio più ampio”.

La Svizzera è un piccolo paese composto di realtà diverse, dai cantoni alle varie etnie. La comunicazione si frammenta sempre più con i nuovi supporti multimediali, cellulari, iPhone, iPad ecc. Cosa può fare una piccola radio-tivù dalla grande tradizione?

For what territory and for which objectives?

“The RSI is part of the Swiss agreement. It is not possible to imagine a Switzerland without plurilingualism, multiculturalism and the various components of federalism. We are a radio and television network that serves a small geographical area but we help to complete the federalist vision. We also exist for those living in Basel, Zurich or Geneva. In respectful consideration of the other regions, we have the task of keeping Italian Switzerland in touch with the rest of Switzerland by establishing a correct balance each day between a small region and the wider territorial area in which it is located”.

“Come servizio pubblico abbiamo diverse funzioni.

Intanto un’informazione variegata e super partes. Poi di accrescere la consapevolezza di essere qui, oggi, in questo territorio. Da questa postazione rilevare e approfondire anche quanto succede attorno e nel resto del mondo. Non dimenticando però che radio e tivù sono anche un piacere. Viviamo in una società complessa e difficile, fatta di solitudini e conflitti.

Radio e tivù danno emozioni, rassicurano per cui dobbiamo interpretare il senso di smarrimento della gente con trasmissioni anche di fiction, intrattenimento e svago che, nel rispetto del pubblico e dei nostri valori e principi, contribuiscano alla pulizia dell’immaginario. Oggi radio e tivù sono come aria e acqua, una sorta di bene primario perché sopperiscono a molte carenze”.

Tivù uguale a audience. È una gara a inseguire il pubblico, costi quel che costi...

“Siamo consapevoli che non possiamo cadere nella pura colonizzazione del pubblico. In certi frangenti non faremo audience più di tanto perché non è compito nostro alimentare certe attese da parte del pubblico. Con i suoi programmi a volte disinvolti la concorrenza italiana ha più forza attrattiva di noi sul pubblico, ma non possiamo tradire la nostra origine e la nostra missione per inseguire l’audience.

Sappiamo che dobbiamo saperci fermare un passo prima di cadere nella pura colonizzazione del pubblico. Ci sono limiti imposti dal servizio pubblico e dalla qualità, che la gente capisce e apprezza”.

Allora radio e televisione hanno ancora un ruolo da giocare sul piano sociale.

“Eccome, più che mai. I punti di forza sono il rapporto con il territorio, la credibilità, una formazione giornalistica solida, l’attenzione alle vere attese del pubblico e soprattutto riuscire ad essere un attendibile punto di riferimento per la lettura di quanto ci circonda. Dal mondo e talvolta anche dalla realtà locale giungono messaggi difficili da capire come la velocità dei cambiamenti, un senso di sfaldamento

Switzerland is a small nation composed of many diverse realities, from its different cantons to various ethnic groups. Communication tends to be increasingly fragmented with the new multimedia supports such as cell phones, iPhones, iPads etc. What role can a small radio-TV network with a glorious tradition have?

“We have various functions as a public service. Firstly, that of supplying impartial information of all types. Then our task is to grow awareness with regards to our presence here, on this territory, at this moment in time. From this standpoint, we must report and investigate what is happening around us and in the rest of the world.

Without forgetting, however, that radio and television also represent one of life’s pleasures. We live in a complex and difficult society characterized by solitude and conflicts. Radio and television are able to offer emotion-packed experiences that reassure people, so we need to interpret the sense of bewilderment that people feel, by also offering programmes of fiction, entertainment and evasion which, with respect towards our public and in accordance with our own values and principles, contribute to forming a healthy public mentality. Any radio or television is like air and water, a sort of essential that compensates for a good many shortages”.

Television = audience. There is fierce competition to win over the public, at any cost …

“We are aware that we cannot fall into the trap of merely colonizing the public. In some areas of entertainment, we will never be able to achieve audience shares that exceed a given ceiling because it is not our job to encourage a certain type of expectation in the public. With programmes that are often rather uninhibited, our Italian competitors exert a greater attraction on our public, but we cannot betray our origins and our mission by pursuing audience figures.

We know that we must not exceed a certain limit that prevents us from giving way to the sheer colonization of our public. These limits are imposed by the public

Questi sono argomenti prettamente culturali. Ma la cultura non è al primo posto delle preoccupazioni televisive ...

So radio and television still have a role to play from a social viewpoint.

“Of course, more than ever before. Our strengths consist in our close contact with territorial realities, our credibility, a sound professional formation as journalists, our focus on the true expectations of the public and, above all, that of successfully providing a reliable source of information with regards to all that is happening around us. At times, messages of difficult comprehension arrive from the world or even from our local realities, such as the speed of change, a sense of social disruption, conflicts that end in violence and the rest, before which our mass media must work towards the promotion of connective social tissue. We must convince our public that what is different has to be understood, and that discord must be addressed without taking refuge in imaginary fears or prejudice”.

Puntare sulla cultura è una scelta decisamente controcorrente in un periodo in cui i network di tutta Europa tendono a rinunciare o a relegarla in seconda o terza serata per privilegiare programmi di più facile consumo. La cultura e l’approfondimento sono nella nostra missione, spesso coniugati con la socialità”.

Avesse la bacchetta magica, potesse cambiare da subito qualcosa?

“Viviamo in un’epoca e in un territorio conflittuali, la Svizzera Italiana da sempre è percorsa da contrasti, mentalità, personalità che si scontrano. In questo contesto vorrei riuscire a far capire meglio la necessità del servizio pubblico radiotelevisivo come luogo dove le parti, le culture, le etnie, le diversità possano incontrarsi, dialogare e capirsi. La gente è abituata a frammentarsi tra mille offerte radiofoniche e televisive, a non fermarsi da nessuna parte, a scegliere più di pancia che di testa ed ha difficoltà ad accettare proposte non fine a se stesse ma che rientrino in una logica. La nostra è la logica federalista, della convivenza condivisa, anche grazie alla RSI”.

Quindi nessuna invidia per i toni urlati, le invettive in diretta, gli scandalismi, i pettegolezzi ...

“Non solo nessuna invidia ma il piacere di continuare a proporre un modello alternativo. E di sentire che anche a sud in molti condividono questo modo con il quale la Svizzera dà il proprio contributo alla lingua e alla cultura italiana”.

These are topics of a purely cultural nature. But culture does not head the list of television priorities….

“The RSI continues to rest on the supporting column of information, with Entertainment making an effective counterpoint throughout the day, as well as Cultural topics. In spite of the risks inherent in a fragmentation of public and consumer patterns.

To concentrate on culture is a choice that certainly goes against the grain at a time when networks throughout Europe tend to eliminate or confine it to late night viewing times in order to push more commercial programmes.

Culture and in-depth reporting are part of our mission and they are often closely related to social issues”.

If you had a magic wand, what would you change now?

“We live in a conflictual age and territory. Italian Switzerland has always been riddled by contrasts, mentalities and personalities that clash. Within this context, I would like to be able to offer a better explanation of the need for a public radio and television service, as a place where all parties, cultures, ethnic groups and diversities may meet, dialogue and understand each other. People are used to zapping among thousands of possible radio and television products, without concentrating on any one particular programme, choosing instinctively rather than rationally, and they now find it difficult to accept any proposal that is not an end in itself but part of a wider philosophy.

Ours is a federalist philosophy, that of shared cohabitation, also thanks to the RSI”.

So, no envy on your part, for raised voices and onthe-air abuse, mud-throwing and gossip…

Un punto di riferimento autorevole per la formazione dell’opinione pubblica; un attore di primo piano nella vita culturale; una fonte importante di reddito e di indotto per l’economia. Si potrebbe sintetizzare così il ruolo – e il senso – dell’azienda radiotelevisiva svizzera di servizio pubblico. Un ruolo che assume ancor più rilevanza se si pensa alle dimensioni della Svizzera italiana: il mandato che la RSI (Radiotelevisione svizzera di lingua italiana) riceve dal Consiglio federale attraverso la SSR (Società svizzera di radiotelevisione) – il quale stabilisce che le minoranze dispongano di programmi equivalenti a quelli delle regioni linguistiche maggioritarie – garantisce al nostro pubblico un’offerta che per qualità e quantità ha pochi confronti in altre realtà. Basti pensare all’enorme visibilità che l’informazione e l’approfondimento RSI, in radio e in tv, offrono alla vita pubblica del nostro Paese, alle rassegne musicali, teatrali, cinematografiche, letterarie. Per tradizione e vocazione, la RSI si fa “voce e specchio” – per citare una recente pubblicazione ad essa dedicata – del territorio, della popolazione, degli attori politici, sociali e culturali nei cantoni di lingua italiana e – di riflesso – nella Svizzera tutta.

An authoritative benchmark for the formation of public opinion; a protagonist of cultural affairs; an important source of income and induced economic activities.

This could be a possible synthesis of the role – and significance – of the Swiss public radio and television service. A role that assumes even greater importance if we consider the actual size of Italian Switzerland: the mandate the RSI (Italian Swiss Radio and Television) receives from the Swiss Federal Council through the SSR (Swiss Radio and Television Company) – which stipulates that minorities must be offered programmes equivalent to those of majority linguistic regions – guarantees a product offering to our public in terms of quality and quantity which has few equals elsewhere.

Just consider the enormous visibility that RSI information and reporting, on radio and TV, offer to the public life of our Country, to musical, theatrical, cinema and literary reviews. By tradition and vocation, the RSI is the “voice and reflection” – to quote a recent publication in which it figured – of the territory, the population, political, social and cultural protagonists of the Italianspeaking Cantons and – as a consequence – of Switzerland as a whole.

egato alla musica, il primo degli Splendide Music Events si è tenuto lo scorso 3 marzo, introdotto dal Maestro Marcello Abbado, pianista e compositore di fama internazionale, che ha presentato la violinista giapponese Eriko Sumi, solista nelle più prestigiose sale da concerto internazionali, con al suo attivo diverse registrazioni radiotelevisive e la partecipazione a concerti con le più grandi orchestre in Giappone, in Europa e negli Stati Uniti.

Sarà invece la giovane pianista italiana, Gloria Campaner, la protagonista del secondo Splendide Music Events che si terrà il prossimo 18 ottobre. Gloria Campaner, diplomata al conservatorio di Udine, è stata la trionfante vincitricedell’International Ibla Grand Prize 2009 che le ha permesso di debuttare alla Carnagie Hall di New York. Diverse e internazionali le esibizioni della Campaner i cui concerti sono stati trasmessi dalle maggiori emittenti mondiali.

Sempre allo Splendide Royal si è svolto lo scorso 11 giugno un evento a scopo benefico organizzato dal Lions Club Campione d’Italia, il “Galà del cuore”. Nel corso della manifestazione, che ha visto la partecipazione straordinaria di Manuela Arcuri, madrina della serata, sono stati raccolti fondi per il progetto “We serve” the heart. Il progetto ha l’ambizione di creare un ambulatorio di cardiologia all’Ospedale Consolata di Nkubu, in Kenya, e di dotarlo, col tempo, delle necessarie sale operatorie, della Terapia intensiva e degli strumenti adeguati.

ith specific regards to music, the first of the Splendide Music Events was held on the 3rd March 2011, introduced by Maestro Marcello Abbado, a pianist and composer of international fame, who presented the Japanese violinist Eriko Sumi, a soloist of the most prestigious concert halls worldwide, with a curriculum comprising various radio and television recordings and concert appearances with some of the greatest orchestras in Japan, Europe and the United States. The young and famous Italian pianist, Gloria Campaner, will perform in the second Splendide Music Event to be held on the 18th October 2011. Gloria Campaner, a graduate from the Music Academy of Udine, triumphantly won the International Ibla Grand Prize 2009, which enabled her to make her debut at the Carnagie Hall in New York.

Gloria Campaner has given various performances throughout the world, which have been broadcast by the most important international networks.

The Splendide Royal also hosted a charity event on the 11th June 2011, which was organized by the Lions Club of Campione d’Italia, the “Gala of the Heart”.

This evening event, crowned by the extraordinary participation of Manuela Arcuri in the role of patroness, raised funds for “We serve” the heart.

The objective of this project is to set up a cardiology department at the Consolata Hospital of Nkubu in Kenya and to equip it with the necessary operating room, intensive care units and surgical instruments.

Dopo le rassegne gastronomiche riservate alla cucina mediorientale e thailandese, lo Splendide Royal ha organizzato la “Rassegna Gastronomica Indiana” svoltasi nella prima metà di luglio.

Con l’Executive Chef Alessio e la sua brigata ha collaborato il Master Chef Indiano Manoj Goel del Varq, rinomato ristorante indiano dell’albergo a cinque stelle “The Taj Mahal Hotel” di New Delhi, insieme al suo team, Chef Bharat Singh Thakur e la signora Sonam Bhola.

Nel corso della rassegna, ai gentili ospiti dell’hotel sono state proposte diverse specialità della cucina indiana sempre affiancate da un raffinato menu di degustazione.

Si svolgerà invece al principio dell’autunno, il 14 ottobre prossimo, la “Serata Toscana” che vedrà come ospite la signora Donatella Cinelli Colombini dell’esclusiva Azienda Agricola di Montalcino.

Following the food festival dedicated to Middle Eastern and Thai cuisine, the Splendide Royal organized an “Indian Food Festival”, which took place in the first half of July.

Working side by side with the Executive Chef Alessio and his team, was the Indian Master Chef Manoj Goel from Varq, the renowned Indian restaurant of the five-star “Taj Mahal Hotel” of New Delhi, together with his team the Chef Bharat Singh Thakur and Mrs. Sonam Bhola.

In the course of this event, various Indian specialities were offered to the esteemed guests of the hotel, together with a refined degustation menu.

A “Tuscan Evening” has been scheduled for early autumn, on the 14th October 2011, which will welcome Donatella Cinelli Colombini from the exclusive “Azienda Agricola” of Montalcino.

a avuto un grande successo la presentazione del pilota Roberto Sorti impegnato quest’anno nel campionato automobilistico “Superstars GT Sprint” a bordo della Ferrari 430 GTS Cup del blasonato team “Kessel Racing” di Lugano.

L’evento, che si è tenuto lo scorso 13 maggio presso le eleganti Sale del Doge del rinomato Caffè Bergamo, noto locale della bella città lombarda, ha avuto quale sponsor il rinomato pastificio campano “Gragnano in Corsa”.

Durante la serata di gala, condotta impeccabilmente da Pasquale Piccinocchi e dall’attrice Tatyana Lorenzini, già finalista di Miss Italia nel 1999 e con diverse partecipazioni televisive in Rai e Mediaset, un pubblico selezionato ha ammirato l’auto da corsa di Roberto Sorti, l’esposizione di alcune fotografie legate alla sua carriera sportiva e degustato le prelibatezze cucinate per l’occasione dallo chef di “Gragnano in Corsa”, produttore di fama internazionale di ben oltre 140 formati di pasta preparati con ingredienti di prim’ordine e secondo gli antichi saperi tramandati da generazioni.

During the gala evening, impeccably presented by Pasquale Piccinocchi and actress Tatyana Lorenzini, a 1999 Miss Italia finalist who has appeared on several television programmes on both Rai and Mediaset channels, an exclusive audience admired Roberto Sorti’s race car and an exhibition of photographs of his racing career and sampled the delicacies created for the occasion by the chef of “Gragnano in Corsa”, an internationally known producer of more than 140 pasta shapes made with firstquality ingredients and according to the ancient knowledge passed down from generation to generation.
