Excela Health Goes Red “Never in a million years” would Martin “Marty” Myers have thought it could happen to him. On Saturday, February 16, Excela Health hosted its sixth annual “Red Out”, an event to raise heart health awareness. Myers was one of the community members in attendance. Last fall Myers had experienced a heart attack shortly after coming home from the gym. It was Officer Elliott Fejes who was first on the scene and used CPR and an automated external defibrillator (AED) to keep Myers alive. Shawn Penzera, Mutual Aid EMT, and Dr. Juan Chahin, Excela Health cardiologist were also present for the event and spoke on the importance of access to the AED for first-responders. “You just got to take care of yourself,” Myers said. “And pray that it doesn’t happen.” To read the full story visit: https://bit.ly/2SG2Z4Z

Through the Employee Assistance Program (EAP), Excela Health employees have access to online seminars! The theme for February is “Recognizing a Need for Support” and the online seminar “Mental Health First Aid” is available now. This seminar covers how to recognize the signs of someone who might be facing emotional concerns and will teach the best practices for offering support. Excela Square Frick Family Medicine/ Primary Care: Now Open Norvelt Family Medicine and Main Street Medical are now located at Excela Square at Frick and renamed Excela Square Frick Family Medicine. These physicians can still be contacted at the same phone numbers; the former Norvelt Family Medicine practice, 724-423-4041, the former Main Street Medical, 724-547-4536.

Why I love My Job!

Although Excela Health is made up of more than 5,000 people, it's easier than you might think for Cheryl Rager to have met many of them. As an Environmental Services supervisor who also helps orchestrate department relocations, she has helped to guide packing, moving, hauling and cleanups across the health system.

Along the way she has made many new friendships that in turn have made the past several months bearable as her husband reached the end of a nearly 20-year battle with leukemia.

Spring into BINGO, 4/28, doors open at noon, lunch served noon to 1:30 p.m. and bingo at 1:30 p.m., Youngwood Fire Hall, 104 South Second Street, Youngwood.

The medical oncology staff at the Arnold Palmer Pavilion site inside Excela Square at Norwin were like family to Cheryl and her husband Richard, who was seen there weekly for years. The staff in Latrobe Hospital's Short Procedure Unit were kind and compassionate, delivering expert care throughout his twice-aweek visits there over a six-month period. And the Interventional Radiology team was equally caring during his time in their care.

And when a transfer from Excela Health was necessary, the Westmoreland Emergency Room staff went above and beyond to make him comfortable in those waning moments.

Volunteer Opportunities

But countless others who weren't part of the care team were there with words of encouragement, a warm hug, a sympathetic ear. “These actions reinforce why I love my job and love working here at Excela Health. I am deeply grateful and appreciative to my Excela family. In my family's darkest hours, my Excela family was a shining ray of hope and support.”
